00:00:00.000 Welcome to Bitchy History, an irreverent history podcast which is run by the woke history professor that Moms for Liberty has nightmares about. 0.70
00:00:12.180 Here we are at episode 20 of the podcast, and today I've decided to tackle a topic for which the research drove me nearly to alcoholism on a number of occasions. 0.57
00:00:20.420 I'm drinking right now, in fact.
00:00:22.280 Don't blame me, I'm a historian.
00:00:24.180 As a field, we have plenty of reasons to drink. 0.67
00:00:26.280 I deserve hazard pay for knowing the history of this shitshow of a country, but sadly hazard pay
00:00:31.000 has yet to be given. You can, however, buy I'm a historian, that's why I drink merch on the show
00:00:36.520 store though if you want to help me out there. Today we'll be focusing on the rhetoric of one
00:00:41.060 particular organization that's been making the headlines a lot these days. Clanned Karenhood,
00:00:46.020 Mary KKK, Hoes for Hitler, otherwise known as Moms for Liberty. To start this off, I want to read 0.93
00:00:52.340 you an excerpt from a recent speech given at a Moms for Liberty rally. Ladies and gentlemen,
00:00:56.660 fellow Americans, American patriots, we with American ideals demand that our government
00:01:01.200 shall be returned to the American people who founded it. We American citizens with American
00:01:05.320 ideals are determined to protect ourselves, our homes, and our children against the slimy 0.65
00:01:09.560 conspirators who had changed this glorious republic into an inferno of a Bolshevik paradise. 0.65
00:01:14.560 We will not fail you when called upon to give every support in our power in the fight to break
00:01:18.680 the grip of communism in our schools, our universities, our very homes. No one has a
00:01:23.300 greater veneration than I for the fathers of the republic and the great structure they founded,
00:01:27.420 and with that feeling, we gather here tonight to honor the memory of the immortal Washington.
00:01:32.500 Oh wait, no, sorry, that was a speech given at Madison Square Garden in 1939 by Fritz Julius
00:01:37.320 Kuhn in front of thousands of goose-stepping American Nazis. You can see how I'd be confused
00:01:42.200 though, right? Moms for Liberty, like dozens or hundreds of right-wing extremist groups before 0.99
00:01:47.340 them, use a rallying cry of the hallowed past, traditional values, protect the children, as a
00:01:53.200 rallying cry for their causes. They twist and misrepresent history, trying to deify the founders,
00:01:58.600 whitewash the bad bits of American history, and pretend that everyone who tells them that they're
00:02:02.620 wrong to do so is a Marxist commie trying to groom their children. Honestly, the most disappointing
00:02:07.700 thing about Moms for Liberty isn't that they exist. That's not a surprise. Groups like this
00:02:12.040 have always existed, in every generation, in probably every country and civilization.
00:02:17.040 The most disappointing thing is how utterly unoriginal they are, which is exactly what
00:02:21.480 today's episode is going to highlight. While the similarities between Moms for Liberty and
00:02:26.200 the Nazism of the German-American Bund, or the actual Third Reich, are more than obvious,
00:02:31.660 I mean, Moms for Liberty literally quoted Hitler in one of their newsletters, and other members
00:02:35.820 cheered when one of the leaders in the group said that she stood by that mom. Truly, Hose for 0.81
00:02:41.220 Hitler works as a nickname for a multitude of reasons. But while I could go into those similarities
00:02:46.200 in depth, I kind of feel like everyone does the whole the GOP is basically the SS thing, and
00:02:51.840 honestly, I think we miss a lot of historical context when we jump right to Hitler. For one
00:02:56.920 thing, Hitler's ideas and those of the Nazi party did not develop in a vacuum. Eugenics didn't leap
00:03:01.700 fully formed from the pages of Mein Kampf. It didn't even originate in Germany, and the most 0.93
00:03:06.420 quote-unquote successful eugenics program prior to the Second World War definitely didn't take
00:03:11.580 place in Europe. No, that was in California. But the podcast will get to an episode on the history
00:03:16.920 of eugenics in America eventually. For now, I want to focus on the long history in America of those 0.97
00:03:22.520 groups that fought against woke curriculum in schools, and maybe together we can see if all
00:03:27.820 of those organizations seem to have something in common. The history of viewing wokeness as an
00:03:32.820 existential threat to American ideals dates back all the way to the earliest days of the United
00:03:37.660 States and Thomas Jefferson's fears about Northern universities. He saw the North and
00:03:42.360 its universities as hotbeds of Federalist influence. After all, the North was where
00:03:46.800 the majority of his Federalist opponents hailed from. To this end, he wanted more institutions
00:03:51.620 of higher education in Southern states. Jefferson saw that many young Virginians went North to study
00:03:57.080 at Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. Jefferson wrote that,
00:03:59.760 we see our youth flying to foreign countries to obtain that of which they are deprived at home,
00:04:05.060 a liberal education. And no, he didn't mean France or England when he said foreign countries.
00:04:10.700 He meant the northern states. A bit odd for a man who put his life, liberty, and property on the
00:04:15.640 line to form a new country, but he always was a bit more Virginian than American in many ways,
00:04:21.100 I suppose. Jefferson warned that northern universities worked to instill into students'
00:04:26.720 young, open, and unsuspecting minds, opinions, and sentiments inimical to the interest and
00:04:31.400 happiness of their parent country, for we see that they have too frequently returned back into the
00:04:36.680 bosom of that country with a respect and affection for everything abroad, the effect of which is the
00:04:41.740 contempt and disrespect for everything at home. Now, except for being full of words that my redneck 0.87
00:04:47.060 extended family would never understand, this sounds exactly like every screed on Fox News
00:04:52.480 about how universities are Marxist hellscapes of liberal indoctrination.
00:04:56.840 And of course, it wasn't just the federalism of the North
00:04:59.180 that worried Jefferson and the other Southerners.
00:05:01.500 The real concern came from the growing anti-slavery and abolition movements in the North.
00:05:06.320 Western expansion, largely Jefferson's responsibility through the Louisiana Purchase,
00:05:10.680 had poured fuel on the sectional divides related to the issue of slavery throughout the country.
00:05:15.580 Many Northerners thought that any new states entering the Union should be free states,
00:05:19.660 while Southerners wanted to be able to move west
00:05:21.740 with their system of plantation-based slavery fully intact.
00:05:25.280 While Jefferson professed to be against slavery,
00:05:28.060 despite being a slave owner himself,
00:05:30.220 and let's not even start with the Sally Hemings situation,
00:05:33.380 for now, we'll save that for my roast of Jefferson down the road,
00:05:37.060 he was intensely angered by the North
00:05:39.080 seeking to push the issue on ending slavery.
00:05:41.640 He believed the North wanted to push the issue
00:05:43.800 faster and further than white people in the South did, 1.00
00:05:46.660 which was clearly correct. 1.00
00:05:48.280 That said, any speed of abolition from the North would have been moving uncomfortably fast for the South
00:05:53.000 since they were about as still and immovable on the issue as Stonehenge.
00:05:57.340 But that is also a topic for another episode.
00:06:00.080 Jefferson's hatred of Northern universities seems incredibly backwards in this case.
00:06:04.020 If he truly wished for slavery to end in the South,
00:06:06.940 would he not have wanted the next generation to be taught by abolitionists and opponents of slavery in the North?
00:06:12.600 His main concern, he claimed, was that the North was pushing for too much too fast.
00:06:16.660 but if the next generation of Southern leadership was opposed to slavery because of a Northern
00:06:20.980 education, wouldn't that have sped up change in the South? I don't know. It just seems hypocritical
00:06:26.260 to me to want to prevent the next generation from learning anything negative about slavery
00:06:30.200 if you want slavery to end, but that's just my two cents on the issue. Regardless, we know what
00:06:35.900 happened with students who attended the University of Virginia that Jefferson founded to keep students 0.91
00:06:40.260 away from the brainwashing of Yankee schools, and it was the opposite of everything Jefferson
00:06:45.300 claimed he wanted. They became more religious, more pro-slavery, and the young men in attendance 0.57
00:06:50.440 were violently racist towards African Americans. It's amazing how keeping a group secluded from
00:06:55.600 all outside thought, only learning from those who agree with their parents, and feeding off
00:06:59.660 the toxicity of their fellow students will create a poor soil for growth. You'd think a farmer like
00:07:04.660 Jefferson would have known something about crop rotation, but I guess he was just a gentleman
00:07:09.040 farmer, not a real one. Jefferson died in 1826, but his sentiments about the evil brainwashing
00:07:15.000 schools of the North lived on. The Richmond Enquirer in 1856 published an article about
00:07:20.420 the University of Virginia in which they had this to say about Northern universities.
00:07:24.800 Young men at college in the North are constantly exposed to the danger of imbibing doctrines
00:07:29.380 subversive of all old institutions and of all the established tenets respecting religion, law,
00:07:35.140 morality, property, and government. Every village has its press and its lecture room, and each
00:07:40.120 lecturer and editor unchecked by a healthy public opinion opens up for discussion all the received
00:07:45.560 dogmas of faith nothing is considered as settled nothing too venerable or sacred to be controverted
00:07:51.040 the intellectual rashness of youth and their love of novelty predisposes them to reject old opinions
00:07:56.820 and to accept without sufficient investigations what is novel and startling it is not safe or
00:08:02.580 prudent to expose young minds to the contagion of the conventions the lectures and the press of the
00:08:07.540 northern isms under these circumstances it surprises us that moral conservative and religious
00:08:12.860 men at the north who can afford it do not send their sons to southern schools their training
00:08:17.860 would be moral religious and conservative and they would never learn or read a word in school
00:08:22.300 or out of school inconsistent with orthodox christianity pure morality and the right of
00:08:27.200 property the sacredness of marriage the obligations of law and the duty of obedience to the government
00:08:32.640 it will forever make me scream laugh and do a shot of whatever hard liquor is available that
00:08:37.880 individuals like this could say that northern schools or wokeism today is about brainwashing
00:08:43.600 students while also saying things like southern schools are better because students who learn
00:08:48.740 there would never learn or read a word in school or out of school inconsistent with orthodox
00:08:54.200 christianity pure morality and the right of property like do they seriously not see the
00:09:00.360 irony there at all? Basically, this entire complaint is Northern schools make our kids 0.50
00:09:06.140 question our shitty traditions, and we don't like when our kids do that, so we want to make sure 0.86
00:09:11.100 they only learn what we want them to learn. Sounds a lot like Moms for Liberty, doesn't it? 0.94
00:09:17.620 And other articles from the pre-Civil War period are a lot less vague on what content they 0.99
00:09:22.220 specifically don't like that's being taught to their kids by those damn Yankees. Abolition. 0.99
00:09:27.920 In 1845, the Richmond Enquirer published this about the benefits of Southern education.
00:09:32.760 Threatening signs indicate that a storm is coming upon us.
00:09:35.460 It may be distant, it may be almost here, but that it is coming can we doubt
00:09:39.440 when we consider in how short a time abolitionism has grown from insignificance into consideration
00:09:44.780 and with what rapid swells it continues to advance.
00:09:48.440 The author then says that when this storm comes from the South,
00:09:51.540 they will need all the Henrys and Rutledges and Randolphs and Sumters and Lees,
00:09:55.680 the pen of Jefferson and the sword of Washington to save the Republic and preserve the Union.
00:10:00.860 But, they ask, where will all these young men have been educated? Amid a strange people differing 0.89
00:10:05.940 from the Southerns in temperament and sympathies, or with their kindred in blood and in feeling,
00:10:10.940 on the rock-bound coasts of the chilly north where they must hear daily condemnations of
00:10:15.080 their domestic institutions, and even from their instructors in science, opinions unfavorable to
00:10:20.720 the system of society in the land of their fathers, or among the blue mountains of their
00:10:24.960 own sunny climb, where no malign influence can weaken the ties which bind them to the soil of
00:10:29.900 their nativity. Right, right, makes sense. That's totally not brainwashing. Here's another part from
00:10:36.120 this frankly, alarmingly long article, which always tickles me when I read it. The author
00:10:41.000 goes on at length about the heightened dangers Southern students face of expulsion at Northern
00:10:45.840 universities. For what, you might ask? Not for questioning the Yankee brainwashing, no. The
00:10:51.220 author tells us exactly why more southern men get expelled from northern universities on average.
00:10:56.740 They can't stop getting into fights over, well, the author says sectional prejudices, but he means
00:11:02.560 slavery. But knowing most men in the south when I was growing up there, it was probably because
00:11:07.440 someone thought someone else looked at him funny and he couldn't let that slide. Basically, it's
00:11:12.400 19th century toxic masculinity on display. Good old southern boys channeling try that in a small
00:11:18.160 town centuries before that shitty song was ever written. Imagine that. Throughout the 1840s and 0.99
00:11:23.480 1850s, we see a number of articles in southern newspapers cautioning parents against sending
00:11:28.140 their sons to northern universities. From an 1841 letter to the editor, we get this,
00:11:33.340 I have rarely seen a young man return from a northern school who was not completely disgusted
00:11:37.840 by his experiences, or whose mind was not so filled with dangerous political heresies
00:11:42.980 or sickly fanatical fancies as to render him either dangerous or contemptible as a southern
00:11:48.400 citizen. Every man, I think, should be educated with a view to his becoming a valuable citizen
00:11:53.480 of that country in which his life is to be spent. Now, if my idea be correct, it is certainly most
00:11:59.180 desirable that in youth, when lasting impressions are so easily made upon the mind, he should be
00:12:04.060 kept aloof from all influences, the tendencies of which would be to make him dissatisfied with
00:12:09.340 the institutions and habits of his own people. And it wasn't just in educational institutions
00:12:14.080 that southerners saw wokeism. In DeBow's review in May of 1856, they recommended that all homes
00:12:20.180 should throw out any northern publications, books, newspapers, magazines, etc., which were inimical
00:12:26.400 to southern interests and feelings, and only read publications published on southern soil.
00:12:31.960 Another article from the same year presses the need for books that will mold the opinions and
00:12:37.140 instill proper principles into the minds of youth. Sounds precisely like something from the Moms for 0.81
00:12:42.820 Liberty website, doesn't it? And there's another article in DeBowse, this one by the Honorable John
00:12:48.020 Perkins Jr., in which he sounds exactly like a 19th century member of cland Karenhood, saying that
00:12:54.080 in the past year I purchased a full course of northern school and college books, such as are in
00:12:59.180 most general use, and it seems to me impossible for a youth to be pressed through them and retain
00:13:03.780 just feelings toward the South or proper ideas of its rights under the Constitution, from the
00:13:08.820 frightful pictures of slaves at work under the lash which ornament the child book, up to the
00:13:13.380 sickly sentimentalism of their class readers, and on through the higher law reasoning of Hickok's
00:13:18.700 moral science, there is a constant effort to impress the youthful mind with the idea that
00:13:23.160 slavery is a great sin for the existence of which every American citizen is responsible until 0.97
00:13:28.160 congress acts on upon the subject yeah no shit perkins one thing perkins was right about is his 0.98
00:13:35.460 prediction that within five years the issue of slavery would bring the north and south to blows 0.99
00:13:40.000 when that happened he preferred to have young men of the south prepared to speak from conviction of
00:13:45.640 the wisdom and policy of our peculiar institutions i do not desire their judgment won over by the
00:13:51.180 perverted moral sentiment or by fictitious appeals to their passions to confess that slavery is a
00:13:56.900 great social and political evil is to prepare for battle by throwing away our arms. It is worse to
00:14:02.620 plead guilty and ask for mercy. Some articles even offered examples from the horrifying brainwashing
00:14:09.000 material of the North. Here's one particular excerpt from the American first class book that
00:14:13.840 they took exception to. That ocean which seems to wave with gentle magnificence, to waft the
00:14:19.080 burdens of an honest commerce, and to roll its treasures with conscious pride, that ocean which
00:14:23.780 hearty industry regards even when the winds have ruffled its surface as a field of grateful toil
00:14:28.780 what is it to the victim of this oppression when he has brought to its shores and looks forth upon
00:14:33.620 it for the first time beneath chains and bleeding with stripes what is it to him but a widespread
00:14:38.640 prospect of suffering anguish and death nor do the skies smile longer nor is the air fragrant
00:14:44.600 to him the sun is cast down from heaven and inhuman and cursed traffic has cut him off from
00:14:50.440 his manhood or in his youth from every enjoyment belonging to his being and every blessing which
00:14:55.900 his creator intended for him. I mean, clearly the South couldn't have their children reading that
00:15:00.460 kind of trash. It might make them feel guilty about being white or something, might make them 1.00
00:15:04.580 examine their privilege, horrifying, vile, downright un-American. But of course, the war comes, just as
00:15:11.260 Honorable John Perkins predicted. The North won, amendments were passed, and racism ended forever
00:15:16.580 and ever. Amen. That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works. Oh, right. Unfortunately,
00:15:23.140 Reconstruction is a massive failure, and probably a few more racists could have stood to have been
00:15:27.660 in the way of Sherman's march to the sea. Not that Sherman wasn't also a racist, but we'll get to
00:15:32.720 that later. As the years plot on, the anger at woke textbooks continues to flourish in the South,
00:15:38.520 and in 1894, the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the original clanned Karen Hood,
00:15:43.780 is founded with the purpose of commemorating Confederate traders, building roadside monuments
00:15:48.820 to them, and promoting proper historical education for Southern students, i.e. the myth of the lost
00:15:54.760 cause. No one was a greater promoter of this pseudo-history in schools than Mildred Lewis
00:16:00.040 Rutherford, who looks like she was perpetually sucking on a lemon and was built by the Disney 1.00
00:16:04.860 Imagineers that constructed the spooks for the Haunted Mansion. Look, I'm not being misogynistic
00:16:09.620 here. I'd insult Rutherford this way even if she was Michael Rutherford. Evil ages you. Look at
00:16:14.920 Mitch McConnell if you don't believe me. Mildred was the historian general for the United Daughters
00:16:19.660 of the Confederacy. I use the term historian very loosely here as I do not wish to associate my
00:16:25.560 profession with this woman in any way shape or form. She was no more historian than a horse with
00:16:30.880 an ice cream cone glued to its forehead as a unicorn. Mildred's greatest contributions to
00:16:35.640 the Lost Cause pseudo-history of the South was in writing a measuring rod to test textbooks and
00:16:41.100 reference books in schools, colleges, and libraries, in which she says that the textbooks children in
00:16:46.460 the South are learning from are unjust to the South and refuse to give the South credit for
00:16:52.340 what she has accomplished, which has led her to prepare this measuring rod by which committees
00:16:57.380 appointed by boards of education of heads of private institutions and their teachers can apply
00:17:02.920 this test when books are presented for adoption. It's like the Moms for Liberty just copied the 0.95
00:17:08.720 UDC playbook wholesale. And what is this measuring rod? What is just to the South? I'm pretty sure
00:17:15.420 you could guess, but here's a few of the things that Mildred recommends looking for when deciding
00:17:20.140 to accept or reject a book. Reject a book that calls the Confederate soldier a traitor or rebel
00:17:26.280 and the war a rebellion. Reject a book that says the South fought to hold her slaves. Reject a
00:17:32.600 book that speaks of the slaveholder of the South as cruel and unjust to his slaves.
00:17:37.880 There's a few other suggestions in there, but these are the ones that really still pop up in
00:17:42.340 most modern Lost Cause mythology, at least in my experience. Check out the comments on some of my
00:17:47.320 Civil War videos on TikTok sometime. National UDC President Mrs. James A. Roundsville put it this
00:17:53.200 way at one of the group's annual conventions. It has ever been the cherished purpose of the
00:17:58.000 daughters of the confederacy to secure greater educational opportunities for confederate children
00:18:02.740 and by thorough training of their powers of mind heart and hand render it possible for these 0.78
00:18:08.240 representatives of our southern race to retain for that race its supremacy in its own land
00:18:14.500 by southern race just to be clear she means white people the udc's primary focus like those of the
00:18:21.420 pre-civil war south that i shared earlier was on ensuring that southern schools used only history
00:18:27.060 books that were loyal to the South. In 1915, Mildred Rutherford spoke about a particular book
00:18:32.460 that had been found unjust and which the committee had tried to have removed from schools. When that
00:18:37.320 didn't work, the group, in a quiet, dignified manner with no spirit of insubordination, kindled
00:18:43.620 a bonfire on the campus and into it every copy of that history was thrown. The authorities were
00:18:49.080 taught a lesson. Not one member of that class was expelled. She expressed another story too in this
00:18:54.760 speech, which sounds all too much like the overwrought stories that Moms for Liberty share
00:18:59.300 of little girls and boys crying about how a lesson made them hate being white. In it, she says that
00:19:05.020 a veteran came to me with tears streaming from his eyes saying, what can we do? My granddaughter came
00:19:10.820 home from school and said, grandpa, our teacher said today that slaveholders beat their slaves
00:19:15.860 until the blood fairly gushed out of their backs. And I was ashamed to tell them my grandfather
00:19:20.560 ever owned slaves. Oh, boo-hoo. Tough shit, you racist old shitbird. You should feel ashamed of
00:19:27.140 owning slaves, fighting to keep them, and your granddaughter is better off knowing what you were 1.00
00:19:31.840 up to. But really, this is the same motivation of the Moms for Liberty types these days. They don't 1.00
00:19:37.300 want their kids and grandkids asking awkward questions about what Mommy and Daddy or their 1.00
00:19:41.660 Gigi and Gaga were doing when Ruby Bridges was walking to school with U.S. Marshals, or the 0.96
00:19:46.560 Little Rock Nine was being escorted by the 101st Airborne, or when the Clinton 12 were having their
00:19:51.600 homes shot at by white supremacists. That would be an awkward conversation. And of course, Mildred
00:19:57.060 Rutherford had this to say in a 1914 speech in Savannah, Georgia. The black race, she did not 0.55
00:20:03.220 say black, should give thanks daily that they and their children are not today where their ancestors 0.99
00:20:09.260 were before they came into bondage. Does that remind you of anything? I thank God for slavery. 0.98
00:20:16.560 Look, I don't care how much Kimberly Daniels insists that what she's saying here was taken 0.97
00:20:36.940 out of context. I can't think of any context that would improve that. Of course, the UDC
00:20:42.620 died down a bit after a while, but their ideas on controlling woke textbooks in school never did.
00:20:48.900 The most marked resurgence came in the 1950s when the civil rights movement was gaining steam.
00:20:54.040 Here's some excerpts from approved textbooks in southern schools at the time. A fourth grade
00:20:59.060 history book called Virginia History had this to say about slavery. Life among the black people,
00:21:05.200 they didn't say black, of Virginia in slavery times was generally happy. They went about in
00:21:11.000 a cheerful manner, making a living for themselves and for those for whom they worked. The high
00:21:15.600 school history textbook Cavalier Commonwealth also said this about slaves. They did not work
00:21:21.840 so hard as the average free laborer since he did not have to worry about losing his job.
00:21:26.560 In fact, the slave enjoyed what we might call comprehensive social security. Generally speaking,
00:21:32.060 his food was plentiful, his clothing adequate, his cabin warm, his health protected, and his leisure
00:21:37.580 carefree. It also said that both slave and master understood that bondage as they knew it was not
00:21:44.140 totally evil. Both realized that enslavement in a civilized world had been better in many respects
00:21:49.520 for them than the barbarities they might have suffered in Africa. It sounds like these textbooks 0.73
00:21:55.140 would fit in very nicely with Florida's new curriculum standards about how slaves develop
00:22:00.520 skills which in some instances could be applied for their own personal benefit. You can't see the
00:22:05.760 way my eyes are rolling right now, but it's suitably dramatic. But of course, all of this
00:22:10.120 was for nothing when the Supreme Court said, hey, that whole school segregation thing you've been
00:22:14.480 doing? Not cool, bro. And with Brown versus Board, segregation was over and racism ended forever and
00:22:20.420 ever. Amen. That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works. Wait, shit. No, the racists
00:22:28.160 just doubled down. Sorry, I got that wrong. We'll show you we'll just take all of our kids out of
00:22:33.580 public school and send them to private schools with names like Stonewall Jackson Academy, 1.00
00:22:37.660 where they conveniently only accept white students, which again, the current Moms for 1.00
00:22:42.560 Liberty types seem to have simply copied from their predecessor's homework again with the push 0.99
00:22:47.160 for voucher systems, which will funnel money from objectionable woke public education into private
00:22:52.740 religious schools, which can conveniently ask for religious exemptions from silly things like
00:22:57.060 Title IX and set vague enrollment standards that they can enforce to keep out bad elements, 0.86
00:23:02.800 which today are queer kids and, well, probably the rest of the minorities that couldn't go to segregation academies as well, let's be fair. 0.82
00:23:10.740 And yes, these schools were definitely created to avoid integration. Let's be clear about this.
00:23:16.160 Here's a quote on the reasons for the opening of one of these private schools in Farmville, Virginia in 1959.
00:23:22.000 Because the people of Prince Edward will not submit to integrated public schools.
00:23:27.260 For how long will the courts and the federal government permit the county to deny educational opportunities to the black children? 0.63
00:23:35.520 Oh yeah, in 1959, Prince Edward County, Virginia famously shut all of their public schools by refusing to appropriate funds for those schools to run after being ordered to desegregate them.
00:23:47.340 They did not reopen those schools for five years.
00:23:50.660 So between 1959 and 1964, there were no public schools.
00:23:55.320 the only way for African American students to be educated was to either create a private school of their own
00:24:00.800 or send their children out of the county. 0.60
00:24:03.400 And they cheekily decided to blame the court for denying those kids education.
00:24:08.040 Right, that makes sense.
00:24:09.560 And these kinds of people are probably the same ones who would have gotten upset in 2020
00:24:13.520 when we had to close schools for a bit because of a pandemic.
00:24:16.740 Nice to see where their priorities are set.
00:24:19.140 And while these segregation academies were sprouting up like cases of leprosy in Florida,
00:24:23.340 the fight against woke teachers and textbooks was still ongoing. 0.62
00:24:27.640 While researching for this episode, I was lucky.
00:24:30.320 No, lucky isn't the right word.
00:24:32.000 It felt like a curse, but still lucky in the context of allowing me to find the information needed to write this episode anyway.
00:24:38.140 I was lucky enough to come across a scanned-in copy of several hundred pages of the Citizens Council newspaper from the 1950s and 1960s.
00:24:46.280 If you haven't heard of the Citizens Council, they were an anti-integration group that was formed in the aftermath of the Brown v. Board Supreme Court decision, which has been not so affectionately dubbed the Uptown Klan for being the kind of group that has all the same ideas as the KKK, but is slightly less likely to make a public scene by lynching someone, blowing up a church, or setting a cross on fire in your front yard. Much more civilized.
00:25:10.240 Wading through the absolutely nauseating ideas in this newspaper,
00:25:13.720 I found many articles that sounded like they could have come directly from Ron DeSantis
00:25:17.820 and Moms for Liberty's telegram channels.
00:25:20.700 Which, by the way, those telegram channels are totally public and anyone can view them.
00:25:25.440 They really are in there just screaming the quiet part out loud,
00:25:29.020 so it's definitely worth checking out. 0.93
00:25:31.180 Or one of Tucker Carlson's whiny white supremacist monologues.
00:25:35.160 One article from 1959 talks about the left-wing influence of the NEA,
00:25:39.760 complaining that textbooks praise things like the United Nations and welfare
00:25:43.500 and call the recent unanimous decision of the Supreme Court
00:25:46.700 against segregation in the public schools
00:25:48.540 a momentous forward step in the onward march of democracy.
00:25:54.500 And why are the textbooks saying this?
00:25:57.360 Socialism, duh.
00:25:58.720 The Citizens Council then turns to quote from
00:26:01.100 What Happened to Our Schools by Miss Rosalie Gordon,
00:26:04.300 in which she says that
00:26:05.440 these subversive ideas had to be sneaked over on the teachers
00:26:08.380 and through the teachers to the students.
00:26:10.100 And what better way to sneak them over
00:26:11.660 than through the teacher's own organization
00:26:13.580 and through the textbooks that teachers were given to use in the schools.
00:26:16.540 The largest teacher organization is the National Education Association.
00:26:20.880 It has innumerable committees, subcommittees, state and local branches
00:26:24.600 which reach into every phase of educational activity.
00:26:27.520 It claims a tremendous membership among the nation's teachers
00:26:30.240 and its monthly publication, the NEA Journal,
00:26:33.200 goes out regularly to teach these members.
00:26:35.400 But like all mass organizations in which the majority of the membership has neither the time nor the inclination to watch too closely,
00:26:43.320 the NEA is pretty tightly controlled at the center by a group of officials who, if not outright leftists, could hardly be described as pro-American.
00:26:52.540 And yes, I'm absolutely sure that this is a quote from that 1959 article, not a quote from an episode of The Five on Fox News last week.
00:27:00.620 The Citizens Council complains that students are undereducated
00:27:03.540 because that's the intent of the Marxist socialist commies at the NEA.
00:27:07.940 Oh, and here's a quote from a 1957 article related to Florida,
00:27:11.780 which seems like it could have come from a Moms for Liberty newsletter in 2023,
00:27:16.080 except this one doesn't quote Hitler.
00:27:18.360 Somehow the Uptown Klan comes out slightly ahead of Klan Karenhood on this one.
00:27:22.940 The quote,
00:27:24.180 We are alert to salacious literature being purveyed to our young people in the guise of education.
00:27:30.040 In another entry, which bears remarkable similarity to something Nick Fuentes et al. would be pissed about,
00:27:36.100 in March of 1958, you would find them taking extreme umbrage to a public transit ad in New York City
00:27:41.900 which showed a little white girl playing with dolls of various racial backgrounds,
00:27:46.100 which said,
00:27:47.280 Lord almighty, can you imagine the uproar if we put that ad up today? 1.00
00:27:56.860 Moms for Liberty would be projectile vomiting like a scene from The Exorcist.
00:28:01.020 Here's a tip.
00:28:01.860 If your reaction to something is the same as one the Uptown Klan had in 1958,
00:28:07.580 you need to work on yourself. 0.67
00:28:09.340 But of course, it all comes back around to those commie teachers and woke textbooks. 0.80
00:28:13.380 In the first regular meeting of the Pike County Citizens Council in 1959,
00:28:18.380 Dr. W.M. Caskey spoke, saying,
00:28:21.180 Our biggest problem is to rescue our youth from the would-be integrators.
00:28:25.000 we have too long allowed teachers and text writers to indoctrinate our youth with their sloppy
00:28:29.960 thinking. Unless we find some way to eliminate these teachings in our schools, we may as well
00:28:34.880 disband and go home. We employ too many fuzzy-brained school teachers and church leaders.
00:28:40.640 I'm sure Caskey would be greatly relieved to find out that today, right-wing churchgoers now think
00:28:45.180 Jesus was a woke commie liberal. No more of that Sermon on the Mount for them. In May of 1958,
00:28:51.220 the newspaper declared a need for teen training apparently the chicago tribune had reported that
00:28:57.020 the majority of students favored school integration well that just won't do the citizens council said
00:29:02.060 we clearly haven't been doing a good enough job instilling racism in our youngins and those woke
00:29:06.920 textbooks led them astray we gotta fix that in this the struggle for the minds of our youth we
00:29:12.520 are up against a wily foe who knows well how to plant confusion and doubt how to utilize the
00:29:18.000 idealism and rebellion inherent in the young, and how to mold the whole into a disturbed pattern of
00:29:23.460 doubt and defeatism. Yeah, I know, I honestly sometimes can't believe these quotes aren't
00:29:29.760 from a Ron DeSantis speech or a Moms for Liberty newsletter either. And of course, just like DeSantis
00:29:35.020 and Moms for Liberty, these folks weren't happy to stop with controlling their own children's 1.00
00:29:39.600 education. No, they had to spread the anti-woke to every place, even places like the Red Highlander 0.96
00:29:45.600 Folk School, which was an adult organizer training school in Tennessee, or as the Citizens Council
00:29:51.100 described it, a commie school. In 1959, the district attorney general filed a petition to
00:29:56.540 close the school, charging that it had a reputation of being a place where people drink and engage in
00:30:01.680 immoral, lewd, and unchaste practices. So basically any university during Greek week. Big whoop. But
00:30:07.940 the real problem, of course, was that the school taught workshops on strategizing for school
00:30:12.200 desegregation and civil rights organizing it also according to some busybody neighbor allowed
00:30:18.000 interracial sexual shenanigans apparently i'm not sure how much i trust mrs william lane on that
00:30:24.340 claim in particular to be honest representative henry lee center of bristol said that there was 0.82
00:30:29.580 ample evidence that the school allowed and promoted immoral race mixing sedition subversion
00:30:35.120 and numerous other crimes that violate the american traditions so they kind of sound like 0.57
00:30:40.200 my people, honestly. Eventually, a court ordered that the school's tax-exempt status be revoked,
00:30:45.400 and they were dissolved for violating the terms of its state charter, which can be translated to
00:30:50.660 doing things that might make racist folk nervous, basically. Much like DeSantis and Moms for Liberty,
00:30:56.360 the Citizens Council seemed sure that there was a deeper agenda to all of this diversity, equity,
00:31:01.300 and inclusion nonsense. In 1955, they wrote, integration represents darkness, regimentation,
00:31:07.200 totalitarianism communism and destruction segregation represents the freedom to choose
00:31:12.440 one's associates americanism state sovereignty and the survival of the white race these two
00:31:17.940 ideologies are now engaged in moral conflict and only one can survive they cannot be fused any 0.65
00:31:23.720 more than day can exist in night the twilight of this great nation would certainly follow
00:31:28.580 choose ye this day whom you will serve looking beyond equality non-discrimination and other
00:31:34.700 catchword disguises, the Citizens' Council detects sinister and subversive forces at work
00:31:39.660 behind the attack on Southern customs. I could go on and on. I have nearly 300 pages of this crap
00:31:45.780 from the Citizens' Council and an unhealthy amount of speech transcripts from the UDC and 0.87
00:31:50.200 pre-Civil War newspaper articles, but I think you might have gotten my rather repetitive point here. 0.98
00:31:56.520 The whole anti-woke shit is nothing new in this country, and every single group that's harped on 0.97
00:32:02.000 this has had one thing in common. Hatred. They hate anyone and anything that's not exactly like 0.99
00:32:08.220 them, and not only do they hate it, they fear it. They fear they are losing their status, their
00:32:13.120 privilege, their right to be the most successful just because they're a mediocre white dude whose
00:32:18.020 last name is on a building at Harvard because of generational wealth, and they are fighting back
00:32:22.760 as hard as they can to keep that power and privilege. Also the racism, but I kind of figured
00:32:28.300 that was obvious. I'd like to say they won't win, but this is the same set of arguments we've been
00:32:33.780 having in America on a loop for the last 250 years. And while they haven't made much progress,
00:32:40.120 I'm not sure our side has either. After all, when the words of whiny Southerners in the 1840s sound
00:32:46.100 pretty much the same as the words of whiny Karens in 2023, they've at least managed to maintain the 0.96
00:32:52.320 status quo, which kind of sucks. What's the point of this episode? Hell if I know. But let me try to
00:32:58.760 give you something to take away from this other than a hangover from how much alcohol you needed
00:33:03.120 to get through this episode. In case you ever have any doubts on if Moms for Liberty, DeSantis, 0.99
00:33:08.940 or any of that ilk have any points worth listening to, whenever your Aunt Susan or Uncle Bobby Joe 0.53
00:33:14.740 start complaining about woke teachers grooming kids to make them gay, just remember that they
00:33:19.840 sound identical to a group that we call the Uptown Clan, and know that you are very much 1.00
00:33:25.220 on the right side of history when you tell them to fuck off. And to Moms for Liberty, 1.00
00:33:29.560 I have some advice that I very much doubt you'll listen to. But I'll give it to you anyway.
00:33:38.300 Thank you for tuning in to Listen to Me Bitch About History yet again this week.
00:33:45.720 i hope that you enjoyed this episode as much as i didn't enjoy making it if you are a patreon

00:34:06.400 you what the topic will be first of all because it's a secret from the rest of you non-subscribers
00:34:10.800 but also because it's not planned yet. Additionally I will be taking a couple of weeks off from the
00:34:15.900 podcast so this will be your last episode until I return on September 11th. Consider this my very
00:34:21.420 short summer break before the fall semester of the podcast starts. Not that it's much of a break
00:34:26.260 since I'll be spending the entire time working on rolling out my first full online courses.
00:34:31.280 Links to that will be on the website when they're ready to go. When the show returns we'll be talking
00:34:35.540 about the history of vaccines in America, a very topical discussion considering you know everything.
00:34:40.800 During that episode, you'll also be hearing from a special guest, investigative journalist David Heath.
00:34:45.520 So look forward to that.
00:34:47.020 See you back here in a couple of weeks.
