00:00:00.000 Welcome to Bitchy History, where we cut through the myths and nostalgia to get to the raw, 1.00
00:00:17.300 unvarnished truth about the past. With sharp analysis, a feminist lens, and just the right 0.99
00:00:22.580 amount of bitchiness, we're here to show you that history isn't just something to study, 0.97
00:00:26.240 it's something to question. Let's get started. 1.00
00:00:30.000 Welcome back to Bitchy History, where we find that even science can fall prey to the patriarchy. 1.00
00:00:37.060 Last time, we saw how theology and philosophy built the blueprint for patriarchy, 0.85
00:00:41.740 but by the 19th century, the pulpit was getting kind of crowded, and the Enlightenment was
00:00:46.600 promising reason, logic, objectivity, which sounded great in theory, until you realized
00:00:51.960 who was doing the reasoning. The priests might have lost their time in the spotlight, somewhat,
00:00:56.400 but the professors got laboratories, and suddenly the power to define woman was not divine,
00:01:02.080 it was data-driven. In this new world, the tools of salvation changed. Out went the Bible and holy
00:01:07.800 water, in came calipers, microscopes, and skull-measuring tools. And make no mistake, 0.95
00:01:13.200 the same anxiety that once burned witches at the stake was now burning through academic journals.
00:01:18.360 The Victorian age was obsessed with hierarchy. It was an empire of classification. Every rock,
00:01:23.620 birds, skulls sorted neatly into ranks that always somehow ended with white European men 0.96
00:01:29.120 at the top. Plants were catalogued, animals were dissected, races were ranked, and the sexes were 0.62
00:01:34.700 conveniently arranged in a binary with absolutely no wiggle room. When Charles Darwin published
00:01:40.080 On the Origin of Species in 1859, he rocked the foundations of how humans understood creation.
00:01:45.960 But when he turned his evolutionary gaze towards humans in The Descent of Man in 1871,
00:01:51.060 his radical edge softened into domestic. He imagined evolution as a battlefield where men's
00:01:57.360 courage, intellect, and competitiveness drove civilization forward, while women's patience
00:02:01.980 and beauty kept the species looking good in portraits. It was Survival of the Fittest, 0.96
00:02:06.620 rewritten as a Victorian marriage manual. The unspoken assumption was clear. Men built
00:02:12.080 civilization. Women decorated it. Darwin's peers happily followed his lead. Herbert Spencer, 1.00
00:02:17.920 philosopher, and pioneer of social Darwinism, warned that women possessed only a limited 0.99
00:02:23.060 reserve of biological energy. If too much of this went into thinking, not enough would remain for 1.00
00:02:28.320 their natural reproductive duties. Education, he believed, would lead to infertility and national 0.88
00:02:34.400 collapse. Imagine standing before a room of young women and explaining with a straight face 1.00
00:02:39.320 that them doing algebra homework might doom the British Empire. By the 1870s, Spencer's theory 0.99
00:02:45.800 had a medical ally in Dr. Edward Clark, a Harvard physician who published Sex and Education, or
00:02:51.900 A Fair Chance for the Girls, a title that promised equality but delivered social panic. Clark claimed
00:02:58.800 that women's reproductive organs were too delicate to withstand higher learning. Studying, he said, 0.93
00:03:03.920 would divert vital energy from the uterus to the brain, producing monstrous brains and puny
00:03:09.700 uteruses, unquoting. It was the 19th century equivalent of saying, don't worry your pretty 0.99
00:03:15.060 little head about it. Clark's book was a bestseller and quickly became ammunition for
00:03:19.680 university boards that were determined to keep women out. But not everyone accepted this as
00:03:25.020 gospel. In 1875, Antoinette Brown Blackwell, the first woman ordained as a Protestant minister and
00:03:31.240 one of the earliest feminist scientists, decided that she'd had enough of men using nature as an 0.99
00:03:36.560 excuse for patriarchy. Her book, The Sexes Throughout Nature, took direct aim at Darwin 1.00
00:03:41.620 and Spencer, whom she called the two most influential living men. She knew it would
00:03:46.300 be seen as audacious for a woman to critique the high priests of evolution, but as she put it,
00:03:50.740 the disadvantages under which women are placed are never lessened by waiting.
00:03:56.000 Blackwell didn't reject evolution, but she reclaimed it for women. She accused Darwin 0.98
00:04:00.280 and Spencer of dressing up old social prejudices as biological law, what she called defrauded
00:04:05.900 womanhood. Their theories, she argued, condemned humanity to forever retarding its own advancement 0.99
00:04:11.860 because a society that refused to promote a genuine, broad, and healthful equilibrium of
00:04:16.560 the sexes was sabotaging its own evolution. In other words, if half your species is stuck in
00:04:22.500 the nursery, don't act surprised when civilization doesn't grow up. Blackwell's critique marked one
00:04:28.280 of the first feminist confrontations with the so-called neutrality of science. She saw what
00:04:33.380 her male contemporaries couldn't or wouldn't, that the real flaw in evolution wasn't biology,
00:04:38.620 it was bias. Her warning went unheeded, of course. Instead of correcting their methods,
00:04:43.640 her male peers doubled down. Darwin's shaky gender logic became the cornerstone of an entire
00:04:48.960 intellectual movement dedicated to proving that women were biologically unfit for public life. 0.66
00:04:54.360 This was the golden age of what historians now call scientific anti-feminism, a polite term for
00:05:00.080 men discovering new ways to explain why women shouldn't exist outside the home. The French 0.93
00:05:04.660 physician Paul Broca weighed brains, literally, believing that the smaller female skull proved
00:05:10.040 smaller intellect. The fact that women's bodies are smaller overall didn't seem to complicate his
00:05:14.780 data set for some reason. For Broca, the numbers confirmed what society already knew. It was a
00:05:20.180 perfect feedback loop. Measure, misinterpret, publish, repeat. Across Europe, phrenologists
00:05:26.000 were reading skulls the way astrologers read star charts. Each bump and hollow supposedly
00:05:31.300 revealed character. Courage, intellect, and ambition clustered conveniently around the
00:05:36.060 male brow, while devotion and tenderness nestled in the female temple. The entire exercise was a
00:05:42.140 Worshark test for cultural bias. Phirology was just astrology for men with calipers. 0.83
00:05:47.740 Victorian science wasn't content to confine its fantasies to humans, either. As the Smithsonian
00:05:53.100 as noted, even biologists projected gender roles onto the animal kingdom. Male birds were described 0.65
00:05:58.920 as bold and adventurous. Females as coy and nurturing. Bees became paragons of self-sacrificing
00:06:05.580 motherhood. Lions were symbols of masculine dominance. Nature, viewed through a patriarchal 0.56
00:06:10.580 lens, conveniently reflected the same story that society told about itself. But this objective
00:06:16.120 science of difference had one more trick. It turned cultural norms into biological destiny.
00:06:21.540 The entire Victorian worldview depended on the idea that hierarchy was natural. 1.00
00:06:26.580 If women seemed less rational, it was because evolution designed them that way. 0.65
00:06:30.760 If men dominated public life, it was because nature rewarded strength and intellect in men. 0.88
00:06:35.980 The logic was circular but seductive.
00:06:38.360 Men ruled because they were fit to rule, and their rule proved their fitness.
00:06:42.920 The irony is that many of these ideas were born in an age of supposed progress.
00:06:46.900 The 19th century loved to congratulate itself on replacing superstition with evidence,
00:06:52.180 but it simply traded one kind of faith for another.
00:06:54.980 Where earlier centuries feared witches and temptresses,
00:06:57.760 Victorians feared educated women and social change.
00:07:00.900 The instruments changed.
00:07:02.280 The panic stayed the same.
00:07:04.080 Of course, women weren't passive in this story. 1.00
00:07:06.540 Across Europe, they pushed back against the notion that intellect was an evolutionary liability. 0.99
00:07:12.200 Cambridge's Girton College opened its doors to women, 0.95
00:07:14.520 sparking outrage and endless debates about female ability. In Zurich, women from across Europe,
00:07:19.780 nicknamed Zurich girls, pursued medical degrees and often outperformed their male peers. 0.96
00:07:24.920 Shocker. Russian students in particular became famous for their skill and defiance, 0.98
00:07:30.380 scandalizing polite society simply by existing as competent doctors. Every lecture they attended 1.00
00:07:35.600 was an act of rebellion against the myth of feminine frailty. Still, the machinery of 1.00
00:07:40.440 science kept on grinding. In laboratories and lecture halls, men continued to weigh, measure,
00:07:45.320 and dissect, seeking proof that the social order was inevitable. Phrenologists mapped virtue onto
00:07:50.780 skulls. Anatomists measured pelvises to prove that childbirth defined a woman's destiny.
00:07:55.960 Physicians wrote textbooks warning that education or ambition would warp the female body.
00:08:00.700 Each new discovery only reinforced the same conclusion. The world, they insisted, was exactly 0.89
00:08:05.700 as it should be. Behind the polished brass of the microscope and the gleaming glass of the
00:08:11.040 specimen jar, the old fears still pulsed, the fear of women who knew too much. As Barbara 0.97
00:08:16.600 Ehrenrich and Deirdre English remind us, the professionalization of medicine didn't just 0.97
00:08:20.980 exclude women, it erased their history. The midwives and healers of earlier centuries,
00:08:26.020 once branded witches, were now dismissed as superstitious relics. Their knowledge,
00:08:30.740 repackaged in Latin, became the foundation of modern obstetrics and gynecology, 1.00
00:08:34.760 minus the women who created it. The witch's herbs became the doctor's prescriptions and the healer 1.00
00:08:40.140 became the hysteric. But we'll be talking more about the history of women, witchcraft, and medicine 0.85
00:08:44.760 in a future episode. By the end of the 19th century, the scientific establishment had 0.96
00:08:49.520 accomplished something extraordinary. It transformed prejudice into principle and social anxiety into
00:08:54.760 natural law. Gender wasn't just enforced by religion or etiquette, it was encoded in the body, 0.98
00:08:59.880 written into bone and muscle, and declared eternal by men in white coats. And that brings 0.79
00:09:04.560 us to the next phase of the scam. Once women had been measured and classified, the next logical 0.99
00:09:09.240 step was to diagnose them. If the Victorians had proven, at least to themselves, that women were 0.71
00:09:14.400 physically and intellectually inferior, the 20th century would take the project further. It would 0.94
00:09:19.400 pathologize them. Because when science finishes defining what a woman is, the next question it 1.00
00:09:24.560 can't resist asking is, what's wrong with her? Once science had decided what a woman was supposed 1.00
00:09:30.160 to be delicate, emotional, ruled by her reproductive organs, and naturally followed that any deviation 0.98
00:09:35.780 from that script must be illness. What began as a classification system turned into a diagnostic
00:09:41.320 manual. Women weren't just different from men, they were defective versions of them. The late 1.00
00:09:47.080 19th century gave birth to modern psychiatry, and with it a new way to name and manage female
00:09:52.900 rebellion. The most famous diagnosis of all, hysteria, had ancient roots. The word came from
00:09:58.640 the word in Greek hysteria, meaning uterus, because doctors literally believed the womb
00:10:03.700 could wonder about the body causing chaos. A headache? The uterus had floated upward.
00:10:08.760 Melancholy? It was pressing on the heart. Disobedience? Anger? Ennui? All from a uterus
00:10:14.340 getting uppity and not knowing its place. Victorian medicine gave this ancient superstition 0.99
00:10:19.080 a facelift. Instead of blaming wandering body parts, doctors now blamed the nerves. Hysteria
00:10:24.880 became the catch-all explanation for any woman who was inconvenient. Too sad, too loud, too sexual, 1.00
00:10:30.840 too ambitious. The male imagination of the era could envision the expansion of empire,
00:10:35.420 railways, and electricity, but not the idea of a woman having an independent emotional life.
00:10:40.580 In Paris, the neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot turned hysteria into high art. At a hospital in
00:10:46.300 Paris, which has a very, very French name and I will not embarrass myself attempting to pronounce
00:10:50.920 it. He staged weekly clinical demonstrations where women were hypnotized, prodded, and photographed
00:10:56.360 in the throes of so-called hysteric fits. These performances were invitation-only,
00:11:01.620 attended by doctors, artists, and even writers like a young Sigmund Freud. The women, often 0.99
00:11:06.500 poor or institutionalized, became a medical spectacle, their suffering repackaged as 0.79
00:11:11.540 scientific discovery. It was less medicine than theater, the doctor as director, the patient as
00:11:17.420 performer, and the audience applauding their own superiority. Freud, in particular, really took
00:11:22.640 these lessons to heart and turned hysteria into theory. He agreed that women's symptoms—paralysis, 0.82
00:11:28.040 anxiety, fainting—were real, but he reinterpreted them as manifestations of repressed desire.
00:11:33.880 It was no longer the womb that wandered, but the libido. Freud's famous case studies made female
00:11:39.020 pain into the backdrop for his philosophy. Women's minds were battlegrounds of sexuality and 0.92
00:11:44.040 submission, their neuroses proof of their fragile nature. The difference between theology and 1.00
00:11:49.220 psychoanalysts, it turned out, was mostly vocabulary. The sinner had become the patient,
00:11:53.940 and the confessional was now a consulting room with a couch. But not all treatments involve 0.98
00:11:58.560 talking. Across the Atlantic, American neurologist Weir Mitchell offered what he called the rest
00:12:04.540 cure. His method was simple. Isolate the patient, forbid her to read or write, feed her a diet of
00:12:10.360 milk and meat, and keep her in bed until she's submitted to domestic tranquility. It was prescribed
00:12:15.240 for depression, anxiety, and basically any case of female dissatisfaction with her lot in life.
00:12:20.940 Charlotte Perkins Gilman's was one of his patients, and her horror story, The Yellow
00:12:24.760 Wallpaper, was barely fiction. In it, the narrator, trapped in her bedroom by her well-meaning doctor
00:12:30.620 slash husband, begins to see a woman crawling behind the wallpaper. By the end, she tears down
00:12:35.900 the paper to free the figure, only to realize the imprisoned woman was herself. Gilman's story was
00:12:41.600 a feminist exorcism disguised as fiction, a mirror held up to medical cruelty that women faced 1.00
00:12:46.640 regularly. As Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English point out in their book, Witches, 0.99
00:12:51.100 Midwives, and Nurses, the rise of male medicine coincided with the systematic sidelighting of
00:12:56.580 women's own healing traditions. The same culture that had once burned midwives as witches now 0.70
00:13:01.580 confined their granddaughters to asylums for talking too much. Knowledge of the body, once 0.78
00:13:06.720 communal, practical, and female, was replaced by a male profession that pathologized its subjects. 0.59
00:13:12.440 Medicine had moved from persecuting women to patronizing them, which was progress only if
00:13:16.860 you ignore the continued power imbalance. By the early 1900s, the language of diagnosis expanded
00:13:22.620 beyond hysteria and to a more ambitious project, defining normality itself. This was the age of
00:13:28.480 eugenics. Psychologists and physicians sought to engineer the perfect population, which required 0.97
00:13:33.560 classifying not just diseases, but entire groups of people. Working class, emigrant, and black women
00:13:39.520 were targeted for sterilization in the name of social hygiene, while middle class white women
00:13:44.280 were told that motherhood was their patriotic duty. Feminine virtue was rebranded as a matter
00:13:49.580 of national survival. Meanwhile, the emerging fields of sexology and psychology took aim at
00:13:55.660 homosexuality itself. Writers like Havelock Ellis and Richard von Kraft Ebbing cataloged sexual
00:14:01.800 behavior with the zeal of butterfly collectors, labeling anything outside of heterosexual
00:14:06.520 reproduction as pathological. Homosexuality became inversion, female pleasure without men 0.83
00:14:12.400 was frigidity, and gender variance was treated as deformity. What had once been called sin and
00:14:17.980 temptation was now neuroses and deviation. Same control, different naming structure.
00:14:22.960 As the 20th century dawned, the pathologizing evolved. Women were blamed for everything from 1.00
00:14:28.320 social unrest to male anxiety. A nervous woman was a familiar trope in both literature and medicine. 0.98
00:14:34.500 Her fragility, a moral lesson. Her breakdown, a cautionary tale. The trend reached its absurd peak 0.78
00:14:40.640 in the 1930s and 40s when American magazines and medical journals began to fret about the 0.99
00:14:45.360 frigidity of women. Women who didn't enjoy sex, or enjoyed it too much, were pathologized as 1.00
00:14:51.600 maladjusted. If Freud's generation had seen the problem as repression, the interwar years saw it
00:14:56.940 as competition. Women who worked, studied, or sought independence were accused of masculinizing 1.00
00:15:02.240 themselves and demasculating men in turn. In one 1940 medical text, a psychiatrist warned that 0.75
00:15:08.220 excessive education and self-assertion led to psychosexual confusion. The evidence? Increasing
00:15:14.760 divorce rates and women who said no to men, basically. Science was no longer pretending to
00:15:20.400 discover truth. It was enforcing conformity. Pseudoscientific gender theory served the same
00:15:25.660 function as religion once had. It gave patriarchy the glow of inevitability. Women's behavior could
00:15:31.620 now be graphed, measured, and corrected. And when medicine wasn't busy diagnosing women 0.99
00:15:36.260 individually, it was diagnosing society through them. The modern woman became a national obsession, 1.00
00:15:42.260 the symbol of everything that could go wrong if boundaries blurred and binaries broke down.
00:15:47.280 Then came the Second World War, which scrambled gender in ways the Victorians could never have
00:15:51.580 imagined. Women had worked in factories, flown planes, and built weapons while men went away to
00:15:56.600 war. Rosie the Riveter flexed her bicep in posters, a national icon of competence and strength, 1.00
00:16:01.780 and for a few brief years, it looked as if that revolution might last. But when the soldiers came 0.54
00:16:07.440 home, Rosie was told to put down a rivet gun and pick up a spatula. The G.I. Bill sent men to
00:16:12.400 college and into management. Women were politely shown the door. America in particular felt it 1.00
00:16:17.860 needed a reset when it came to gender roles, and the Cold War provided it. Domestic containment 1.00
00:16:22.540 became the national strategy, not just for communism but for gender. A happy housewife 1.00
00:16:27.820 in a suburban kitchen was suddenly the front line of democracy. The enemy was no longer abroad but
00:16:33.140 inside. The unfeminine woman, the career wife, the mother who didn't smile enough. In the new 0.98
00:16:38.440 psychology of the atomic age, every family was a microcosm of the state, and women's compliance
00:16:43.520 was civic duty. Psychiatrists stepped into the role of moral arbiters. They warned that women 0.71
00:16:48.800 who rejected traditional roles were maladjusted, and the men who tolerated them were emasculated.
00:16:54.700 The 1947 bestseller Modern Woman, the Lost Sex, crystallized this panic. Its authors,
00:17:00.480 journalist Ferdinand Lundberg and psychiatrist Mariana Farnham, diagnosed the working woman 0.86
00:17:05.260 as a danger to civilization. They insisted that female independence led to neuroses, 0.99
00:17:09.480 that career ambition produced frigidity, and that the only cure for female anxiety was marriage and
00:17:15.500 motherhood. The book became a post-war bestseller and a psychological blueprint for the 1950s
00:17:20.620 domestic ideal. I own the copy. It's in the top five worst books I've ever read.
00:17:26.000 It was Freud with a patriotic twist, sexual repression framed as national defense. Magazines
00:17:31.440 like Ladies Home Journal and Good Housekeeping spread the gospel of a domestic science. Entire
00:17:36.360 articles instructed readers on scientific homemaking, complete with charts and checklists
00:17:40.880 to optimize kitchen efficiency and marital happiness. Housewives were urged to schedule
00:17:45.300 their chores, track their menstrual cycles, and even monitor their smiles. The language is modern,
00:17:50.140 but the message was medieval. Control your emotions, serve your family, and you'll be healthy.
00:17:54.500 Step out of line, and you're sick. By the middle of the 20th century, something extraordinary had
00:17:59.660 happened. After a century of measuring and diagnosing women, science had finally perfected 0.97
00:18:04.640 its product, the normal woman. She was calm, married, fertile, smiling all the time. She was 0.96
00:18:10.840 not hysterical, not ambitious, and definitely not asking for equal pay. The scientists had done
00:18:15.880 their work. Now the advertisers, politicians, and psychiatrists would have to make sure she stayed 1.00
00:18:20.540 that way. Companies hired psychologists to sell femininity back to women as aspiration. Lipstick 1.00
00:18:26.700 ads promised confidence, vacuum cleaners authored fulfillment. Hormone science soon found its role
00:18:32.400 in the performance. In the post-war years, estrogen became the miracle cure for everything
00:18:36.680 from menopause to nervousness. Don't worry, we'll get to the other miracle cure of meth and
00:18:42.720 tranquilizers in a future episode. Medical journals and women's magazines alike advertised hormone 0.99
00:18:48.300 therapy as the secret to staying young and desirable. The same scientific establishment
00:18:52.460 that had once warned against overusing the female brain now advised women to regulate their moods 0.74
00:18:57.840 chemically for their husband's comfort. Patriarchy, always adaptable, had learned to monetize biology. 1.00
00:19:04.120 Then came the cultural reinforcements. Hollywood picked up where psychiatry left off. 0.71
00:19:09.140 The perfect 1950s woman was either the radiant housewife or the doomed career girl. In films 0.97
00:19:14.400 like Calamity Jane or The Best of Everything, independent, tomboyish women inevitably found 1.00
00:19:19.760 happiness only by choosing femininity and love over work. Marilyn Monroe embodied the era's 0.90
00:19:25.460 paradox, brilliant, self-aware, and trapped in the caricature of the dumb blonde. The more 0.98
00:19:30.380 intelligent she became off-screen, the more Hollywood punished her for it. Television brought 1.00

00:19:39.100 The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Each week, millions of viewers tuned in to watch tidy families
00:19:43.820 with docile mothers who always had fresh-baked cookies and fathers who dispensed sage moral
00:19:48.380 advice while smoking his pipe. Domestic bliss was patriotic, and laughter was ideological
00:19:53.740 lubrication for it. These weren't just comedies, they were cultural training films. A weekly
00:19:59.100 reminder of what happiness was supposed to look like. Psychiatry, marketing, and media all worked
00:20:05.060 from the same manual, femininity as a prescription. Any divergence, too ambitious, too queer, too 0.99
00:20:11.060 discontented, was framed as disorder. Homosexuality remained in the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual 1.00
00:20:16.680 of mental disorders as sexual deviation, and women's dissatisfaction with domestic life was
00:20:22.080 labeled a neuroses. Betty Friedan would later call it the problem that has no name, but in truth it
00:20:27.900 had plenty of names. Hysteria, frigidity, maladjustment, anxiety, loneliness, penis envy. 0.98
00:20:33.800 The labels changed, the logic didn't. By the mid-1950s, the binary had been polished to a very 0.62
00:20:39.400 high gloss. Masculinity was strength and reason, femininity was emotion and beauty, anything in
00:20:45.220 between was pathology. The same culture that sold pink vacuums and hormone pills also waged 1.00
00:20:50.420 moral crusades against sexual deviants. The lavender scare targeted queer Americans as 0.68
00:20:55.200 threats to national security. Newspapers warned of mannish women and soft men corrupting the 0.94
00:21:00.540 moral order. Every era has its witch hunt, and this one just swapped torches for tabloids. 1.00
00:21:05.940 The irony was that all this pseudoscientific posturing, psychological profiles, hormone
00:21:10.120 charts color theory, was supposed to represent progress? Humanity had landed jets, split atoms,
00:21:15.960 and mapped DNA, yet half the population was still being defined by mood swings and kitchen colors. 0.99
00:21:21.160 After centuries of sermons and scalpels, science hadn't liberated women from superstition. It had 1.00
00:21:26.080 just modernized it. But cracks were forming in the pastel perfection. In 1948, Alfred Kenzie
00:21:32.180 published Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, followed by Sexual Behavior in the Human Female
00:21:37.160 in 1953, his data demolished the myth of a chaste binary world. Women, it turned out, were having
00:21:43.700 sex. Lots of it. And not always with men. The public reaction bordered on actual hysteria, 1.00
00:21:49.940 proving that Victorian panic was alive and well in the atomic age. The establishment tried to
00:21:54.540 dismiss Kenzie's work as immoral and dangerous. And the truth was, it was dangerous. It revealed
00:21:59.920 that categories that science had worked so hard to enforce for centuries were leaking at the seams.
00:22:05.560 Within a decade, those leaks would become a flood.
00:22:07.760 The 1960s and 70s would bring feminist revolt, queer activism, and the return of the witch as a symbol of resistance.
00:22:14.160 But that's a story for another episode.
00:22:16.200 Because when patriarchy's old theories start to wear thin, it doesn't admit failure.
00:22:20.760 It rebrands.
00:22:21.700 The scientist becomes a psychologist.
00:22:23.840 The psychologist becomes the advertiser.
00:22:25.880 The advertiser becomes the podcast bro.
00:22:28.180 And the same message keeps getting repackaged.
00:22:30.600 Be smaller, quieter, prettier.
00:22:32.900 Smile.
00:22:33.560 Take your vitamins.
00:22:34.260 by the pink version. The mid-20th century didn't invent gender, it just industrialized it. 1.00
