00:00:00.840Hey everyone, it's Anne. As you know, we fund the show almost entirely with listener subscriptions.
00:00:06.720But I know not everyone has the room for that in their budget. Or maybe you're feeling some
00:00:10.880subscription fatigue. But if you love the show, there are a couple things you can do to support
00:00:15.380us without spending anymore. First, you can share it with a friend. You can post it on your Instagram
00:00:20.260story. You can email it to your mom. The other thing you can do is rate and review us in your
00:00:25.400podcast app. I don't think people really realize this, but those reviews go straight to Melody's
00:00:30.160inbox. And we'd love to see some reviews that don't say I'm a miserable professor or a pretentious
00:00:35.400asshole who is just using this podcast to talk to all of my friends. Basically, if you love this0.73
00:00:40.700show, say so. Word of mouth helps us so much. Okay, thanks for listening and on with the show.
00:00:46.940tiktok is in such a weird flux moment right now that i feel like my for you page when i opened
00:00:56.240tiktok feels a lot different than it did just a few months ago first of all i feel like everyone's
00:01:02.460kind of noticed this that it's just the first six things you see feel like they're all ads or like
00:01:10.040tiktok shop that's not the kind of content where i'm like wow this is exactly what i want to see
00:01:15.780in the way that TikTok used to feel where it was like, wow, I can't believe my For You page is so
00:01:20.340tailored to me. Mine really changes because like I have managed to create this interesting
00:01:25.840relationship with TikTok, I think because it's on the third page of my phone screen where I only
00:01:30.140really look at it like once a week. And oftentimes it's because I fall down a rabbit hole for a piece
00:01:35.760that I'm working on or for like a podcast or something like that. And so my page like will
00:01:42.080dramatically changed so obviously when it was bammer rush time like it was just like
00:01:47.680all sorority content like so deep and then i was like doing all the um crown of thorn and roses i
00:01:57.080always say it wrong some court rise court court court of thorns and roses content and then there
00:02:03.120were so many like fantasy memes and like i also i like weird stuff too like i i really love
00:02:10.840huff carving videos herding videos the herding dogs where they're like they're sheep herding
00:02:17.700and the owner says like one word and then the the dog goes and like herds an entire mountain
00:02:23.100of sheep that sort of thing yeah this is the culture study podcast and i'm ann helen peterson
00:02:32.100i'm katie natopoulos i'm a senior correspondent at business insider covering tech and culture
00:02:38.460i am so happy that you are here with us today because like seriously when i melody was like
00:02:44.620oh we're getting all these questions about like weird things on tiktok like who should we talk
00:02:48.300about i was like i know exactly who should talk about it with uh i'm honored i am trust me i am
00:02:54.840so thrilled to be here uh when i saw your email i was like there is nothing on planet earth that
00:03:01.800would make me more pleased than to do this your beat even like your beat has always been to some0.60
00:03:09.520extent weird shit on the internet yeah i mean i think so and like very often weird things on the0.72
00:03:17.040internet are sort of tech stories because they involve you know platforms and the ways that0.96
00:03:22.900those platforms are shaping how weird things grow um sometimes they're culture choice because they're
00:03:30.580you know about the way that people exist what can it show us about us yeah so you and i are the same
00:03:38.160age i imagine in your peer group you outside of media world that you also have friends who are
00:03:43.880like i only watch tiktok when it comes over into my reels right like they feel like they're too old
00:03:50.400for it or like that they're never going to get into it in some way i do feel a little like that
00:03:55.880has changed at least for the some of my friends that like something finally happened where you
00:04:03.400know now everyone kind of is on to it um yeah i mean there there are some weird user statistics
00:04:08.880that came out maybe i feel like it was like a pew study from earlier this spring where it was
00:04:13.960actually like the majority of tiktok users are now like over 30 like something like sort of or
00:04:19.860maybe not even the majority but it was like people think of it as a gen z thing but it really is like
00:04:25.000more millennials and even gen xers are posting than uh yes it is it's skewing much older than
00:04:32.700it used to it is no longer a teen app it's an everyone app is there a way that you can describe
00:04:39.360the difference in like vibe between stuff that shows up on tiktok and stuff that people make
00:04:45.840specifically for reels so i'm not talking about reposting stuff it's more like stuff that people
00:04:50.340make for reels like how would you differentiate those two now that is a question that i think
00:04:54.660about a lot because yeah i personally have found myself reaching for reels more than i have tiktok
00:05:02.520i used to just love love love tiktok watch it as much as humanly possible or as much as a lot
00:05:09.200yeah until you get to the point where it's like it gets like bottom of the barrel and they're
00:05:14.020serving you at things that like only 14 people have seen yeah it was like my go-to time killer
00:05:19.660app and i mean i would spend a fair amount of time watching it during my work day because it you know
00:05:25.400in my line of work it was like relevant right like that's probably not true for everyone i mean
00:05:31.380for a lot of people there are like a lot of people who work in social media or advertising
00:05:36.000or marketing and you kind of need to be up on these trends yeah but i think it was a mix of like
00:05:41.440so much of the shop stuff all of a sudden it just felt really ad heavy like also had almost like
00:05:48.560fine-tuned itself with such granularity to be like this is exactly what you're gonna like katie
00:05:55.680and i was like yes it is and then i would go over to instagram reels which is like
00:06:00.880complete chaos because instagram's algorithm is just not as good as the tiktok for you page in
00:06:09.460terms of and i think there's probably a supply and demand you know supply issue too like yeah
00:06:14.560there's just better content going on on tiktok um but i i used to sort of ignore reels on instagram
00:06:20.840just because it was mostly reposts of tiktok or whatever um and then something happened somewhat
00:06:26.980recently where like i just got into like a cringe loop like where it was serving me like almost all
00:06:36.200like cringe content and there are a bunch of these like what give an example well a lot a lot of like
00:06:41.720super like christian content like really intense like catholic content a lot of like trad wife
00:06:50.060stuff a lot of like hustle bro workout motivation like um i get a lot a lot a lot of i'm pretty sure
00:06:59.880that official andrew tate is not allowed on instagram anymore but there are so many like
00:07:06.160offshoots of his like they're basically these like fan tribute accounts that um post his content
00:07:14.120even though he doesn't have an account there is like an army of his fans that post his videos
00:07:20.900and like oh my god like what is this like it's it's so far out there in terms of like
00:07:26.940it's you know it's pulling up the rock and looking at the bugs scurry around i don't mean
00:07:33.820to call entertain fans bugs i apologize to the industry i mean like i apologize to the vulnerable
00:07:38.560young men who listen to you i don't think i don't think that's i don't think there's many
00:07:43.360ann helen peterson fans who are like i'm also really into entertain for the record i'm not
00:07:47.960really into entertain um but i get like a lot of his content no and this like i find it fascinating
00:07:53.160just like you can look at the bugs and be like what is going on here and but not be like oh
00:07:58.580and i freaking love the bugs yeah like yeah yeah right like i'm not like i want to be one of the
00:08:03.200bugs i'm but like but yeah but i mean you know it's just all of a sudden a lot of content that
00:08:09.040is not made by people who are like me either age-wise demographically different value systems
00:08:17.520um and i find that fascinating like i enjoy seeing that kind of content that is from made by people
00:08:24.120who have very different perspectives and come from different walks of life than i do
00:08:28.080that's like a so terrible saying i love to look at the weirdos well and if you follow katie on
00:08:34.380instagram she will repost some of these without comment just like and i like if when i watch him
00:08:39.840i'm like oh like i'm shielding myself uh but i get the most basic shit on instagram so i get the
00:08:49.120people who uh they've realized that the instagram algorithm has turned against them in the way that0.54
00:08:56.480they just post normal images and so they make reels by using like whatever music is the top
00:09:01.940thing and then like maybe just like a you know three seconds of video and some words written
00:09:09.180on the video and then everything that they want to say for the reel they actually just put in the
00:09:14.300caption so it's like they're trying to get instagram to pay attention to them again which
00:09:19.720works right but it doesn't feel like its own thing do you know what i mean yeah no i i feel
00:09:28.100like i i do see a lot of that kind of content i find it's a very annoying format of like yes it
00:09:33.620it's literally clickbait where it's like yes you know someone standing in front of a river saying
00:09:39.860this one thing changed my entire life and then like arrows arrows down click here to find out
00:09:45.860more and i'm like no tell me what the thing is i want to know and like you're and i've been getting
00:09:50.220like so much gardening content because i follow a lot of gardening accounts and it's like this is
00:09:55.220the secret to amazing hanging baskets and then it has an arrow yeah no and it's like water them
00:10:04.060you know like like it's never like a revelation in any way so yeah i find that i'm frustrated
00:10:09.780to that okay so we'll talk well we i think we'll keep coming back to the differentiation between
00:10:15.700what's going on as we proceed through the conversation but for today's episode we ask
00:10:21.100listeners to submit tiktok trends they're seeing and they want an explainer on so some of these i
00:10:27.440know you have like expertise in and some of them we can speculate on so the first one is a good way
00:10:32.800for us to talk about the tiktok algorithm just generally and this comes from susanna not a
00:10:37.220question but a comment about a weird FYP on TikTok. I started getting videos on knife talk
00:10:42.980which involves these bizarre blade sport competitions where people have this machete
00:10:47.640like knife that is apparently super sharp and they run around cutting things like ropes, tennis
00:10:52.760balls, a series of water bottles all lined up where they blast off the lids in one swoop.
00:10:58.120I like to cook but I have no idea why TikTok thinks I want to see this. That said I kind of
00:11:04.680can't look away which reiterates to me that tiktok somehow knows us better than we know ourselves
00:11:09.340i mean clearly she's watching right she's seeing a lot of these videos so like tiktok's like yeah
00:11:15.660we got you but what do you think how does it work if you can explain to people who don't really get
00:11:21.280it like if she was watching cooking stuff that somehow it would serve her this i have two ideas
00:11:28.480i guess so one is that i do think there's a lot of what makes tiktok fun is there is a lot of this
00:11:35.260really weird niche hobby content that bubbles up yeah and i think that like generally speaking
00:11:43.060people like that stuff when they see it because for exactly the same reason she likes it she's
00:11:47.140like i don't know this is weird i've never seen this before it like it's kind of fun to watch
00:11:51.320like someone cutting open a tennis ball like um and i think there's tons of weird niche things
00:11:58.000that are like that um like i well i mean to be fair i actually was searching for this the other
00:12:02.920day but i was like watching a girl who just like does like chainsaw testing but i was like this is
00:12:09.560great content um my guess is that if i was you know mr tiktok which is you know obviously it's
00:12:21.800not how it works or whatever but i think the tiktok hour and they're like they probably like
00:12:25.500part of it is that if you can imagine like you're making a potpourri for you page and some of it's
00:12:31.000going to be like this is tailored to exactly the kind of content that we already know you like
00:12:35.980like very similar in terms of what kind of content it is and then we'll sprinkle in weird little bits
00:12:43.440of like tester content to see yeah do you like this too and i imagine that a lot of that weird
00:12:49.080niche hobby stuff kind of filters in as this tester content right so it's like you know it's
00:12:54.440Maybe not that you watch cooking stuff and use knives for cooking, but like, have you
00:12:58.960also watched something about somebody who knits, like, or not even hobby stuff, but
00:13:04.960just like, I think they probably floated into everybody's page a little bit.
00:13:08.780And I bet that a lot of it performs well overall.
00:13:12.680Like, I think one thing that works well is probably it's very visually pleasing, right?
00:13:16.140Like, it's immediately interesting to watch like a knife doing actions.
00:13:20.200the other thing that i was thinking is that in this weird way i do think there's an element
00:13:25.640where a lot of stuff on tiktok that seems new because we are seeing it on tiktok
00:13:30.740it's secretly like kind of been bumbling around the internet in other forms for a long time like
00:13:35.920weird knife and sword stuff has been around youtube since like the dawn of youtube like
00:13:41.820like there were like it was sort of very early viral videos were like guys taking their samurai
00:13:48.300swords and like being like i'm gonna use this katana to chop a pumpkin or whatever like i feel
00:13:54.400like there's a lot of that kind of stuff there's just something about that that's like i don't know
00:13:58.200it's funny right so just like taking a katana and going to town on a watermelon is fun um
00:14:04.520and it's like visually pleasing of like a variety show right yeah or like the way that like vaudeville
00:14:11.360worked or um america's funniest home videos like all of these historical forms where people either
00:14:19.260told weird stories or did weird things or captured weird moments and then people really loved watching
00:14:26.820them yeah not new right yeah i will say that i think that a format that does feel like a pioneered
00:14:35.860format completely new to tiktok in a weird way let me know if you think this is the like people
00:14:42.340telling a story or something while they're putting on makeup or getting dressed or like
00:14:47.740and i feel like there's this it's not because they're just multitasking it's meant to be like
00:14:53.860i know it would be boring if you were just sitting here looking at my face
00:14:57.540so i'm going to visually interest you with also watching a makeup application video which might
00:15:03.000be boring if I wasn't also telling you a story about this wild thing that happened in my childhood
00:15:08.840you know so I feel like it's like it's almost there's another version of that that's like a
00:15:13.620split screen that might be like a clip from you know young Sheldon over like a subway surfer video
00:15:22.040game or whatever like yeah that they multi-screen kind of stuff because weirdly we're so our brains
00:15:29.240are so craving input at all times that we need like ultimate visual stimulation i also think
00:15:36.220that part of the reason people do that is because it makes them less self-conscious while they are
00:15:41.340making the video yeah right so and then you can tell the story with more ease because you're not
00:15:46.960just staring at yourself or you're not thinking about like what do i do with my face while i tell
00:15:51.180this story and that ease also makes it easier for the viewer to watch it without feeling
00:15:57.320uncomfortable themselves whereas because most people aren't like you they're not like oh i
00:16:02.800really want to feel uncomfortable while i watch i think the creators too i mean one of the earliest
00:16:10.520things i noticed about tiktok being different than instagram i feel like this is a very like
00:16:14.740i don't know when did sort of like 2019 was when tiktok was maybe first taking off right sort of
00:16:19.820i mean obviously the pandemic was when it really exploded um you know the big difference being on
00:16:24.580Instagram it's like everyone like looks nice they have their hair done like you wouldn't post a
00:16:29.660makeup free picture on Instagram but on TikTok people were so willing to like look bad in a way
00:16:39.540that was in teenagers and in a way that was like I think really refreshing and really nice that like
00:16:45.680people post videos where they look like crap and like great because that's how everyone looks when
00:16:52.360they wake up in the morning right and there is something sort of fun about like you see people0.96
00:16:57.000do the full process of like here's what i look like before i do my makeup with you know my skin
00:17:02.600looks all blotchy and i have pimples and you know and then you get to see the end and you're like
00:17:07.800wow now you look like you have a beautiful face you know i i love makeup videos like they're fun
00:17:13.020transformation like i love it always makes me feel like i'm using way fewer products than anyone
00:17:18.600else in the world I don't know if you I mean as as a person of some of the age I don't know if
00:17:23.780you feel like I do where I feel like I've just completely lost the thread on how to do makeup
00:17:27.580now and I'm like I don't want to be an old person who's like I don't understand the new ways but
00:17:34.560like and like I'm trying like I'll go to like Sephora and buy new stuff but like sometimes I
00:17:40.880watch these I'm like wait we're not using the sponges anymore we're back to the brushes like
00:17:44.840what's going on? This is a really good segue into our next question,
00:17:49.600which is about the way that younger generations use TikTok. This is from Kristen and Melody's
00:17:54.940going to read it. I've heard, and to be honest, I don't know if it's true,
00:17:59.140that the number one search tool used by Gen Z is TikTok. Example, instead of Googling how to boil0.90
00:18:06.080an egg, a Gen Z-er will watch a TikTok video that shows how to do it. This has deeply unsettled me.0.99
00:18:12.600am I just following in the tradition of generations before me and not understanding
00:18:17.520something fundamental about the changing way of the world? Or is there something worse or lost or
00:18:24.000ominous about this cultural shift? Well, here's where I think we should talk about how bad search0.95
00:18:30.040has become. Like how bad like Google search has become with so much junk on the internet. So yeah.
00:18:35.480So I love this question because this is so right now of the moment where all of a sudden Google just announced this huge way that it is changing search, that it's going to be using AI answers for a lot of those questions like how to change a filter, an air filter in my car or whatever.
00:18:55.740Yeah, that I think has made a lot of people really sort of radically think about like, what, what even is search? What, what are we looking for here? Like, what was the point of all these websites that existed that would answer this question? Like, what is the web? What is search? What is what is the meaning of all this?
00:19:12.600I do think that already, like, I've definitely found myself searching TikTok for those kind of things, too, because often like a video answer is pretty good.
00:19:25.620And part of that search had been, quote unquote, broken, partly because of all these giant incentives to make a bad web experience, right?
00:19:37.240Like, if you wanted to know how do I change a tire on my car, like, you could find a million websites that would do it that are loaded with ads that are like the SEO challenge to do that to like be the top site for that is like such a nightmare.
00:19:53.200Like, there's so many bad incentives created by Google to Google that it like every hour it was it was like bad.
00:20:00.740And that was all scraped from like lots of other sites anyway. So it was almost like a predecessor to this AI scraping. I know a lot of people who do the Reddit before a question now, like that's the other way. But do you find that search on like the videos on TikTok are better than the ones on YouTube? Because usually like the other day, I was trying to figure out how to change the light bulb in the hood above my range. And I went on YouTube, not on TikTok.
00:20:28.680So I would say it depends a little on the question.
00:20:32.360And I do think that this is a case where like being able to tell, should I use Google, YouTube, or TikTok to search for this is like a decision that you make based on years of experience of using the internet and knowing what forms of content you're most likely to find there, right?
00:41:54.460But our last question, and I know you're going to have some great thoughts on this,
00:41:58.300is another weird corner of the app that I always immediately go past.
00:42:04.220This question comes from Sarah, and Melody's going to read it.
00:42:06.960Can you please explain what on earth is happening on TikTok Live?
00:42:11.600When I accidentally enter that realm, it can be truly bizarre.
00:42:14.920There are people, usually women dressed in costume, that are standing mostly still and seem to be making facial expressions on command, or there's a lady that stares at the camera and pops one kernel of popcorn at a time on a hair straightener.
00:42:29.100I assume these are somehow generating revenue for the content creator. Can you please explain?
00:42:35.680I feel like sometimes it's like, is this a Twin Peaks? Are we in Twin Peaks right now? That's what they make me feel like.
00:42:44.920what what's the incentive here i agree yeah like sometimes when i accidentally hit the live button
00:42:50.380in the corner i feel like i've entered the portal to hell like yeah yeah it's like what um yes there
00:42:58.000is definitely financial incentive people in once you're in the live people can essentially send you
00:43:03.140like tips like micro payments you buy like um you know a flower emoji you buy like a pack of
00:43:09.700you know emoji things this is a behavior that's like kind of popular in streaming stuff like
00:43:15.500twitch which is not like something i use it's also popular in like other countries
00:43:20.220um in china in particular this kind of like live streaming with micropayment tips is is very
00:43:25.780popular which explains why it's in tiktok um but it's a little bit more feels like the live
00:43:30.460streaming from twitch uh if that's familiar the i mean the fact that people do really weird stuff
00:43:36.140in there is like kind of to get your attention right like um yeah there was uh someone went
00:43:42.940really viral recently where it was i can't remember her name it's like pinky something um
00:43:47.720but she would she would do these really weird um she had like sort of a name for it it was like
00:43:53.640npc simulation or whatever she would pretend to sort of be almost like a non-playable character
00:44:00.200in a video game where you kind of do the repeated motions of like hello hello you know but she did
00:44:07.040really she was really good at doing them um and a lot of it was like she i mean she was also like0.99
00:44:13.520a beautiful young woman which helps um and she would be wearing like sexy clothing and then she0.99

00:44:31.540but yeah like she makes money from that like people tip her and send her micropayments um

00:45:20.860does like he's a florist maybe and he's sort of like oh he's always like talking to the camera
00:45:26.280and he's putting together giant flower bouquets but i feel like it's maybe like their paper
00:45:29.500flowers or something i feel like he's always on i would watch that yeah that's it that's the only
00:45:35.200fun um melody says it's good for watching the the heiress tour live because oh that's a good use of
00:45:43.460i think also part of it is that live streaming as a form of engagement is is something that is
00:45:51.380more popular in other countries and other age demographics than probably we are in
00:45:57.240yeah we're like one static photo makes me feel good
