00:00:00.000 Today's episode of Diabolical Lies is brought to you by the Mayflower, the Salem Witch Trials,
00:00:05.700 Anne Hutchinson, Cotton Mather, a dirty pair of 17th-century forceps, a pair of unwashed hands,
00:00:12.060 my personal obsession with the days of yesteryear—how's that for smooth product placement—and
00:00:17.020 of course, the listeners. I feel like we haven't shouted them out recently in our intro, and I just
00:00:21.480 wanted to celebrate the people who support this project. As a reminder, we don't take
00:00:25.980 any advertisements or paid sponsorships, and so all of this is thanks to you guys.
00:00:30.000 Tell me why when you said Anne Hutchison, my brain immediately went to Anne Hathaway, and I was like, oh, we're getting two product placements.
00:00:36.720 No, I'm talking about the 17th century woman who was a midwife and also a preacher and was tried for her war crimes.
00:00:43.160 A few friendly reminders today before we begin this conversation.
00:00:46.720 Number one, we are podcasters and not doctors or midwives.
00:00:50.700 Surprising, I know.
00:00:52.180 We are talking today about history.
00:00:54.500 We are talking about the cultural and political implications of that history.
00:00:57.620 and we are not talking about what any person should do when it comes to personal decisions
00:01:02.700 related to pregnancy and childbirth. From epidurals to warm water inflatable tubs in
00:01:08.080 the living room, that is your bag to be discussed with the doctor or midwife or birthing team of
00:01:13.040 your choosing. Number two, any conversation about childbirth on this podcast is going to
00:01:18.540 come with the necessary trigger warning, which is enter this conversation if you want to be
00:01:23.940 having this conversation at this point in your life. We are going to be talking today about
00:01:27.580 how birth works. We're going to discuss medical challenges and realities related to it. And some
00:01:33.180 of that will be graphic. And every person should make their own decision about whether or not they
00:01:37.240 want to participate in that conversation at this point. This podcast never aims to be senselessly
00:01:42.760 graphic, but I do also want to be very clear-eyed about the realities of pregnancy, the roles of
00:01:47.900 midwives and doctors, and the realities of childbirth. And that's what we're going to do
00:01:51.600 today. So for anyone who isn't in the headspace for that conversation for whatever reason,
00:01:56.060 that's totally fine. Come back later when you are, or we'll see you in the next episode.
00:02:01.620 And for anyone who's ready to get into it, let us get into it.
00:02:05.060 And I would like to add my own personal disclaimer that this is a topic that I
00:02:08.860 know nothing about and have no opinions about. So I guess I'm in a perfect position to talk about it
00:02:16.200 for two hours. Well, my goal is to corner you rhetorically into a position where you have to
00:02:21.460 argue an opinion you're not even sure you have, JK. I already feel dumb. And that is my least
00:02:25.920 favorite way to feel. So giddy up, I suppose. So Katie, as you know very well, some of my
00:02:32.920 longstanding interests have to do with sexuality and family and the body. I have mentioned on the
00:02:39.480 podcast before that I'm very interested in childbirth. The more I learn about all these
00:02:44.320 topics from the most personal sense to the most global sense, the more I find them fascinating
00:02:48.520 in the way that they constantly seem to defy ideology to me. And at the same time, these are
00:02:53.600 the topics that are constantly exploited by varying ideologies, often to profoundly contradictory
00:02:59.200 effect. So we talked about this specifically with the Lily Phillips episode. We dipped into
00:03:04.620 sexuality then. We've talked about family in the pro-natalism episode. But we have not yet talked
00:03:09.840 about childbirth, and that changes today. Good. Gonna turn all you boys to men today.
00:03:15.800 This is the beginning of what I hope will be an ongoing conversation about what it means to give birth in America. The title is kind of a gotcha. There's, of course, no correct way to give birth ever. But I do think that there are some really interesting themes that we are going to see brought out today in terms of modern versus historical context for what it means to give birth.
00:03:35.500 This is what I was thinking about, Katie, moving forward as what I'm going to call a guys drink free episode, where it's like technically about women, but there is so much information that I'm like, you're welcome, boys.
00:03:47.680 This is the crash course that you have been looking for in childbirth.
00:03:51.420 Is this where we're going to learn about how many holes there are?
00:03:54.100 You're promised.
00:03:56.040 You're promised dictum on holes.
00:04:00.020 The G spot.
00:04:01.260 Wait, how many?
00:04:02.260 One, two.
00:04:05.500 Eight. There are eight, right? No, yes, I believe there are eight holes. I'm not positive.
00:04:11.480 It depends who's asking.
00:04:15.300 I am not good at math, but I'm 70% certain on eight. So I am always reading about this topic.
00:04:22.420 This is a topic that I began kind of pouring into, not just in research for my novel,
00:04:27.360 but I also just like kind of became obsessed with it. The reason I was spurred into discussing it
00:04:31.640 today, though, had to do with something that happened a few weeks ago. Katie, were you at
00:04:35.580 all aware of the moment when Trump declared that Tylenol was unsafe for pregnant women?
00:04:40.780 Is that when he was like, I see the acetate. Oh, boy.
00:04:44.640 Yeah. Yes, it was.
00:04:46.980 Yes, I did see that, but I was already like stupided out that week. And I reach a threshold
00:04:52.080 around like Thursday morning where everything else just goes in one ear and out the other.
00:04:58.060 I lack processing power beyond that point.
00:05:01.180 So I wasn't really following it.
00:05:03.260 All right.
00:05:03.460 Well, we're revisiting it today.
00:05:04.780 Can you read the title of this White House memo?
00:05:07.900 Oh, good.
00:05:09.100 Good.
00:05:09.500 Oh, God, they use the same body copy font as the Money with Katie website.
00:05:14.020 That's, that's, that, that means something.
00:05:18.800 I'm not sure what it means, but it means something.
00:05:22.480 Fact.
00:05:24.560 Fact.
00:05:25.080 evidence suggests link between acetaminophen autism. I'm sure it does.
00:05:31.900 And can you read the intro quote by Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt?
00:05:35.900 Caroline.
00:05:38.000 Quote,
00:05:38.500 The Trump administration does not believe popping more pills is always the answer for better health.
00:05:46.040 There is mounting evidence finding a connection between acetaminophen use during pregnancy
00:05:50.940 and autism. And that's why the administration is courageously issuing this new health guidance.
00:05:58.360 Additionally, the Trump administration is approving a new treatment option
00:06:02.200 that has been fouled. I guess this is going to be good.
