00:00:27.040 Welcome to For the Wild. I'm Ayanna Young. You're listening to Deeply Rooted,
00:00:46.020 grounding practices to weather the winds of uncertainty, a series devoted to inviting
00:00:51.320 stillness, balance, and abundance into our lives during these troubled times. Today, my sister
00:00:59.060 friend Kalea Frederick will take us deep into our own breath and root us. Kalea is a mother and
00:01:06.000 First Nations woman dedicated to supporting individuals of all cultures and remembering
00:01:11.140 their ties to the earth. She was raised off the grid in Maui, Hawaii, which forever imprinted
00:01:17.580 in her the importance of quiet spaces. She feels raised by and intimately tied to Hanua,
00:01:24.760 our island earth. A graduate of the International Youth Initiative Program and a spiritual ecology
00:01:31.280 and boards and commission leadership fellow, she has also served as youth delegate twice to the
00:01:36.460 United Nations Climate Change Conferences. Currently, Kailia is a co-executive director
00:01:42.180 with Black Mountain Circle,
00:01:44.560 the editor for LOM,
00:01:45.940 and a climate commissioner
00:01:47.220 for the city of Petaluma.
00:01:49.320 Last year, in tandem with Kate Weiner,
00:01:52.040 she released her first book,
00:01:53.940 Compassion in Crisis,
00:01:55.540 a primer on learning
00:01:56.880 to live in the Anthropocene.
00:01:58.840 You can contact her
00:01:59.880 through earthisohana.com.
00:02:12.180 my name is kylea and i'm grateful to be sharing a little time with you today
00:02:20.800 i so appreciated receiving this invitation from for the wild and because i'm a mother
00:02:27.180 with a toddler who has big energy i decided i wanted to create something in honor and in
00:02:34.220 solidarity with other parents who have young children that's what really got me feeling
00:02:39.200 inspired to do this little recording. I know for a lot of us the balancing act pre-pandemic was
00:02:46.380 already hard enough and now I'm seeing parents including me and my partner having to hold
00:02:52.960 every facet of our family life together with no outside support. It's overwhelming most days
00:03:00.520 especially for those of you who are doing this in tiny homes and apartments with little or no
00:03:07.140 access to outside spaces the act of staying steady in order to create an atmosphere of love
00:03:14.340 and safety amidst loss of income and any clear way forward can most days feel out of reach
00:03:22.180 yet i know we do it we draw deep into our wells in order to hold and to soothe and to feed and
00:03:31.200 for the single parents who hold it down completely on their own, I just wanted to say that
00:03:38.320 I see you. I am so humbled by you. You can do this. You are doing this. This is for you. Thank you. 0.75
00:03:52.480 I'm going to be reading to you as a simple act of thanksgiving and acknowledgement for what I know
00:03:59.180 was an endless stream of outward energy that you produce every day the poem remember by joy harjo
00:04:07.400 who is the 23rd u.s poet laureate and the first native person to receive this title
00:04:14.320 has really been helping me move with and through all of the anxiety and fear
00:04:29.180 we will begin by lying on our backs
00:04:34.520 as though we are just waking up in the morning
00:04:37.760 the body and breath are soft
00:04:40.440 while the eyes remain closed
00:04:43.260 it's the first moments of waking
00:04:46.300 before the stimulation of light
00:04:48.940 sound
00:04:50.300 and thoughts
00:04:51.720 begin to register
00:04:53.440 bring the palms of your hands together
00:04:57.860 and start by rubbing them back and forth.
00:05:03.720 We're bringing blood flow and warmth
00:05:05.700 all the way into our fingertips.
00:05:10.740 Once you feel heat generated,
00:05:13.540 bring each palm to gently cup and rest over your eyes
00:05:17.020 where they will remain for this first reading of Remember.
00:05:20.480 remember the sky that you were born under know each of the star's stories remember the moon
00:05:33.260 know who she is remember the sun's birth at dawn that is the strongest point of time
00:05:42.260 remember sundown and the giving away tonight
00:05:45.720 remember your birth how your mother struggled to give you form and breath
00:05:52.120 you are evidence of her life and her mother's and hers remember your father he is your life also
00:06:03.140 remember the earth whose skin you are red earth black earth yellow earth white earth brown earth
00:06:11.440 we are earth remember the plants trees animal life who all have their tribes their families

00:06:31.320 remember her voice she knows the origins of this universe remember you are all people
00:06:40.740 and all people are you. Remember you are this universe and this universe is you. Remember
00:06:50.540 all is in motion, is growing, is you. Remember language comes from this. Remember the dance
00:07:00.060 language is, that life is. Remember. Let's take a deep breath together. Inhale.
00:07:10.740 And exhale.
00:07:21.780 Keeping your eyes closed, bring the palms of your hands back together, and we're going to repeat the motion of generating heat.
00:07:29.280 Now bring your left palm to rest over the middle of your chest, and your right to rest 0.59
00:07:43.120 over your lower belly, just below the belly button.
00:07:47.340 We are going to practice deepening our breath through presencing with the placement of each
00:07:52.660 hand.
00:07:52.980 start by inhaling into the base of your belly and feel how it naturally expands
00:08:01.720 into your right palm before letting your breath travel up the middle of your body to meet your
00:08:07.840 left palm pause here at the top of your breath before beginning the descending exhale back into
00:08:16.940 your right palm. Pause here before starting your inhale, feeling how your belly rises to meet your
00:08:26.840 palm before letting the breath up the center of your body to meet your left palm. Pause here
00:08:34.260 and then start your slow exhale down. You are going to keep with this cyclical and soft breathing
00:08:43.740 while I read Remember to You for the second time.
00:08:51.020 Remember the sky that you were born under.
00:08:54.280 Know each of the star's stories.

00:08:59.280 Know who she is.
