00:00:00.000 Hello and welcome. I'm Adrienne Dobb.
00:00:04.320 And I'm Moira Donegan.
00:00:05.440 And whether we like it or not, we're in bed with the ride.
00:00:11.000 This is our podcast about sex and gender in the conservative imagination.
00:00:15.540 In the coming weeks, we'll be looking at various thinkers and various ideas that have
00:00:19.280 informed public discourse around sexuality, gender, and sex to a much greater degree than
00:00:24.100 we might like to think.
00:00:25.240 Arguments, controversies, the most intimate parts of our identities and lives.
00:00:29.820 and also the center of our politics.
00:00:32.380 And we should say,
00:00:33.280 this is going to be kind of an intellectual podcast.
00:00:35.660 There's that really famous line,
00:00:36.960 I'll turn it in line, right?
00:00:38.000 Like about conservatism being basically
00:00:40.160 a bunch of irritable gestures
00:00:41.620 striving to resemble ideas.
00:00:43.400 We're going to kind of grant that these are ideas
00:00:45.520 and that they are traceable
00:00:46.620 and that they're formative to look at,
00:00:48.460 even if we don't really agree with them.
00:00:50.620 And, you know, I think it's so important
00:00:52.020 to do this right now
00:00:52.880 because conservative ideas about sex and gender
00:00:54.960 have really moved to the forefront
00:00:56.520 of the American national conversation.
00:00:58.220 You know, we came to this in the wake of the Dobbs decision, rolling back the national right to an abortion.
00:01:05.400 We come as there's a huge wave of anti-trans legislation and sentiment attacking everybody, especially the very young.
00:01:14.640 And we're coming as there's like renewed attacks on birth control, divorce rights, and a huge backlash to Me Too.
00:01:22.560 What we've been finding as we've been reading for and then recording these episodes is that
00:01:27.180 time is a flat circle. You know, the Supreme Court is basically revisiting gay rights this 0.70
00:01:32.020 week. This is a thing that feels very 2013. It feels like we were done with it, right?
00:01:37.020 That's part of what we want to investigate here. Like, what happens to ideas that the
00:01:41.480 mainstream thinks that they're done with, but really maybe anything but?
00:01:44.880 Yeah, the thing about conservative ideas about sex and gender is that they're always
00:01:47.920 just under the surface of a lot of our debates and they come back zombie-like every couple years
00:01:53.580 and you know learning this history i think will help us sort of understand
00:01:57.260 how and why we are doomed to repeat it i hope you enjoy
