00:00:41.380 Hello and welcome to another episode of the Missing Witches podcast. 0.82
00:00:45.740 It's your friend Amy.
00:00:49.000 I'm so happy that you're with us in the coven we create between our ears for the halfway
00:00:55.320 point between summer solstice and fall equinox, sometimes known as llamas, or in some cases,
00:01:01.360 lunasha, which is so fun to say. You can say it with me, lunasha. We're talking about rituals,
00:01:08.020 inventing and creating them, and or studying and learning from books and traditions. So
00:01:14.940 how can we use both modes to cultivate a ritual practice in our lives? Because we at Missing
00:01:21.440 witches are big believers in creativity, invention, improvisation, and imagination. But we also
00:01:28.780 believe in a long and tried history of practices that have been passed on from generation to
00:01:35.980 generation. And we're always looking to create a balance between education and invention. So I have
00:01:43.380 invited two wonderful witches today to help us talk that out. A new friend, author of Muses No
00:01:50.440 Moore, Portraits of Occult Women, Una Maria Blythe, and a dear friend, instructor at Ritual
00:01:58.500 Craft, Loretta Ledesma, aka the Death Witch, founder of the Mile High Conjure Gala and a Santa
00:02:05.740 Muerte devotee. So, Una, let's start with you. You've never been on the podcast before, so
00:02:13.900 again, you're under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago. Who are you today? How
00:02:20.240 are you today? How am I today? I've been very, very sleepy and lazy. I'm sitting here in my bed
00:02:30.580 right now. I live with chronic fatigue and it's kind of, I always like doing podcasts and talks
00:02:38.280 from bed because this is where I wrote my book. This is where I wrote Muses No More. I wrote it
00:02:43.580 from bed and I'm sure yeah I'm sure many listeners can relate to that experience um so yeah it's it's
00:02:53.500 the evening here in the Shetland Islands and the sky is bright because we don't really get much
00:03:00.660 darkness in summer we're not quite the land of the midnight sun but it's it's light out there
00:03:07.500 still and it's going to be light for hours and hours and hours um so I've closed the curtains
00:03:12.560 to make myself feel less solar i suppose yeah coming into coming into my little cave
00:03:21.200 so i can chat to you about all things ritual which i'm yeah really excited to get into
00:03:27.780 one of my favorite topics northern scotland is like practically norway right well we uh
00:03:36.140 Shetland Islands are equidistant about almost exactly halfway between Scotland and Norway.
00:03:43.180 So, yeah, we have a huge melting pot culture.
00:03:48.540 The islands belong to Norway up until, I want to say, the 15th century.
00:03:56.520 My brain goes blank on dates sometimes, so don't quote me on that. 0.99
00:04:01.980 But 15th century, that sounds right.
00:04:03.960 and um so yeah we have we have a real mixture of celtic culture and scandinavian culture
00:04:11.640 do you get aurora borealis oh yes we do that's a wintertime thing because the sky has to be
00:04:19.860 really dark but yes we do and it's really incredible we call it the miri dancers here
00:04:26.400 which means the shimmering dancers
00:04:31.480 Miri means shimmering
00:04:33.200 and we have a story that the Trows 0.94
00:04:36.340 which are kind of like Scottish fairies
00:04:39.800 and a bit like Scandinavian trolls
00:04:41.560 we have the story that the Trows
00:04:45.220 are having a big party underground
00:04:47.440 because that's where they live
00:04:48.740 and they're dancing so fast
00:04:51.960 and spinning around so much
00:04:53.580 that they take off into the sky
00:04:56.140 they zoom up through the earth and into the sky and then as they as they sail back down to earth
00:05:01.920 they shimmer and that is the aurora borealis. Loretta you seem to have a visceral reaction
00:05:08.920 to the mention of aurora borealis so first off how are you who are you today and also
00:05:15.740 why did you have such a visceral reaction to that? I'm doing well um I'm mid unpacking
00:05:26.000 my family and I just moved um so there's a little bit of chaos behind me still um but I'm I'm pretty
00:05:35.740 all things considered in the in the land that I live in I'm pretty good um
00:05:46.020 it's always been a a dream of mine to see
00:05:50.800 the aurora i it's it feels anytime i get to see a video or photo or um you know look into
00:05:59.880 a piece of labradorite and imagine that that might be what it looks like um it just i just
00:06:08.700 it's got it's something i've got to try to do before i die same and you know it's not like
00:06:14.620 the eiffel tower or something where you can just like book a plane ticket and go in there there
00:06:19.960 like you have to have luck and also a plane ticket in many cases let me let me start with
00:06:30.500 that Loretta do you think that there's a ritual or rituals that can bring you luck what do you
00:06:34.780 think about the concept of luck oh absolutely in fact in um the traditions that I work in
00:06:41.040 capturing luck is a really big thing um in fact
00:06:46.360 I've I find that in this like you know modern place of sharing information especially when it
00:06:56.300 comes to abundance or um prosperity work which are two different things um luck historically was
00:07:06.600 the first step that was supposed to be taken and it's kind of been lost um there's
00:07:14.360 several different things working with the bones of a black cat um the ethics around that have
00:07:23.140 have changed um you know now as we have access to natural death specimens um but that's working
00:07:34.460 with the bones of a black cat or something that was it was commonly worked in conjure um
00:07:42.920 even I mean there's certain plants that we know um those spirits bring us luck um there's
00:07:51.640 creating mojo hands around carrying those spirits with us you you conjure several different spirits
00:08:00.880 and then you put it all together and then that creates its own spirit and then that's a spirit
00:08:07.480 that you enter into a contract with and feed and that brings you luck there is the the working of
00:08:19.220 dressing your shoes and dressing your feet so that you're always walking in luck so it's it's
00:08:25.680 definitely that luck work is a big part of my practice and it's, it's historically
00:08:30.800 relevant. Um, it's actually something that I really wish more people would, uh, do because
00:08:41.580 we, there's this, this awareness also that we spend a certain amount of luck. Like for example,
00:08:48.300 um you're driving down the road you miss getting struck by another car well that's luck spent
00:08:57.060 so then you've got to go and gather some more of that luck there's something that goes around in
00:09:04.280 my head a lot and i haven't really come to any conclusions so i'm i'm looking to the two of you
00:09:09.800 for your perspective on this and i guess i guess we'll start with una do you differentiate between
00:09:16.140 rituals spells practices ceremonies and if so how and and what's the difference
00:09:23.820 that's a really great question um i do differentiate between rituals and spells
00:09:32.400 for certain um i guess it's good to have a kind of working definition of what a ritual is um so
00:09:41.340 for me rituals are like containers they're containers of liminal space space which is a
00:09:52.900 threshold which is a it's kind of like a transformative tunnel and it's a space in
00:10:01.620 which we can escape from quotidian life the socio-economic structures we live in
00:10:08.260 and we can make way for something to happen and we don't necessarily know how or in what way we're
00:10:18.960 going to come out the other side of a ritual when we go into it but it's really a jumping off point
00:10:25.220 it kind of reminds me of the the fool tarot card you know it's both the beginning and the end
00:10:30.540 so I think it's really good to have this yeah kind of tunnel tunnel vision of a ritual
00:10:37.380 um and it's also kind of like the athenor in alchemy so it's this furnace like an egg it's
00:10:46.680 an egg in which we keep things brings things up to a certain temperature keep them simmering
00:10:52.720 simmering away and we let something grow within it we go into this ritual and we yeah we don't
00:11:00.700 know what we're going to be like when we come out of it we can set up the conditions for change
00:11:05.300 happening perhaps in a direction you know in usually in a direction which we want to go um
00:11:11.700 but we can't guarantee what on earth the outcome will be and that's kind of the really special
00:11:17.520 thing about rituals for me it's a it's yeah constructing a bridge very architectural
00:11:24.500 whereas for me a spell is something we do to have uh that has a desired outcome for us so we set our
00:11:38.820 sights on an outcome and we do something often that contains a ritual in order for this thing
00:11:45.780 to happen but so the spell can might contain a ritual but a ritual doesn't necessarily contain
00:11:51.460 a spell. Loretta, do you want to jump in on that? And I'll just restate rituals, spells, practices,
00:12:02.240 ceremonies. So for me, for the lens that I approach the work through, ritual is more
00:12:12.760 of something that is done repetitively um so for like for us um you know in in root work conjure
00:12:25.080 very traditional brujería there is um you know laying down work um which i think a lot of people
00:12:34.120 you know where we say work a lot of people's here or to other people that means like spell work we
00:12:42.100 don't really use spell work, that word very often, that term very often. So for me, it's like the
00:12:50.360 ritual of spiritual bathing, which is something that I do every day. The ritual of dressing my
00:13:00.740 feet, my shoes, my hat, which is something that I do every day. So it becomes a ritual because
00:13:09.940 it's incorporated in my moving in everyday life where laying down work is something that I and
00:13:17.040 you know we don't we don't really work with um within the calendar in the same way you know it's
00:13:25.900 there are certain days of the week that are good for certain types of workings um you know if I
00:13:32.740 wanted to do some road opening I would do it on a Monday or a Wednesday depending on which spirits
00:13:37.640 I'm working in with but where you know laying down work is something that if we need to do it
00:13:45.120 we do it then and there um I think you know conjure brujeria root work those things fall
00:13:53.500 under more of like a folk magic lens um and because these are living practices like these
00:14:00.280 aren't practices that have died and then been resurrected these are practices that are they're
00:14:07.580 living traditions so they they change as time changes right but the the root is always um
00:14:17.460 it comes from our elders it comes from our teachers it's word of mouth and
00:14:23.020 it's passed down in even in daily conversation so when we lay down work
00:14:30.560 we just do it and you know one of my teacher professor porterfield one of my favorite things
00:14:37.860 that he says is the most effective type of work can be done with a pocket knife and knowing what
00:14:48.240 direction you're facing so for us it's a little bit different um and a lot of our our ritual is
00:14:57.700 cunning you know it's kept hidden it's kept secret because that's the way that we have been
00:15:06.900 able to walk in this world holding on to our traditions um while also for survival um acclimating
00:15:19.780 and you are an instructor at ritual craft which obviously the word instructor makes us think of
00:15:29.480 someone who's been deeply educated and and you mentioned word of mouth but how else do you
00:15:35.880 you get these sort of like otherwise inaccessible pieces of information and how do you see that
00:15:45.960 relationship between education and invention so books are so books through our lens and again
00:15:59.680 this is just you know through the traditions that I work in um books are it's like a recipe book
00:16:06.300 um and there is the suggested formula that goes into the recipe right
00:16:13.100 but because these are living traditions and these are traditions that evolve with us um it's always
00:16:24.360 it's good to know the spirits that are being called on in the recipe and it's good to know
00:16:32.240 what's growing around you and what spirits of the land or plant spirits or non-human spirits
00:16:41.440 spirits that are, as we believe, because we are in an animus tradition, which is a word that's
00:16:48.620 become more popular recently. We believe that everything has a spirit. So it's good to be able
00:16:56.220 to follow a recipe. And, you know, those recipes are often based, have a historical base. But like,
00:17:05.100 let's say I'm trying to do some work for abundance. And I don't necessarily have
00:17:14.980 chamomile. But I recognize that chamomile is used for abundance because it looks like little gold
00:17:25.320 coins. And then I look out onto my lawn, and I see that there's dandelions. And I see that those
00:17:32.300 dandelions also look like little gold coins so I can make that my own I can make that work for me
00:17:40.380 where I stand and in folk magic I think it's important to to be able to you know read the
00:17:49.980 recipe but then work from where you stand I love this metaphor of the recipe that you can
00:17:57.860 that you can sort of change things but from a fundamental foundation of this is what works
00:18:05.060 like I'm thinking about baking and if you don't have some kind of leavening agent it's not going
00:18:09.760 to work if you use salt instead of sugar in your cookies they're going to taste terrible but
00:18:15.280 outside of that if you want to you know substitute this nut for that nut or or whatever that we are
00:18:22.780 we're allowed to do that right yeah and substitutions make it make sense is really all
00:18:31.140 that it you know that's all you really have to do yeah i love this notion make it make sense
00:18:39.020 una i want to turn to you for a second because your book includes a section of ritual practices
00:18:46.160 that you wrote that you wrote were channeled from the spirits of the occult women who inspired them
00:18:54.820 so i want to know about that process and and and what practice brought you to this channeling
00:19:04.520 ability and also if you have anything to say about education and invention and how we can put those
00:19:11.040 things together. I want to hear about that too. But first, how did you channel those rituals that
00:19:17.880 are in your book? Sure. I mean, it's a difficult question to answer, not because I don't know the
00:19:25.340 answer, but because I feel really cagey talking about it. But I guess I come from a Scandinavian
00:19:36.060 folk magic tradition and as well as that I have a background in ritual theatre which is much more
00:19:43.220 akin to ceremonial magic so we were we were a magical group who made theatre that was secretly
00:19:54.180 ritual not so secretly ritual kind of everyone knew what we were up to on the scene in London
00:20:00.180 um but yeah I guess with channeling I learned my channeling abilities through rituals in a
00:20:10.640 ceremonial context so I really honed them well we would we would construct rituals ourselves
00:20:17.720 um this CH group we had a system and we'd construct rituals ourselves which were incredibly
00:20:24.980 physical so you know we were there as so-called actors in the room together and we would use each
00:20:34.160 other's bodies and props to physically lead somebody through a very somatic experience
00:20:41.380 to move them from their their own self their personality etc all the accoutrements of a
00:20:50.700 personality into their character which was usually an archetypal character I call it an archetype
00:20:58.360 more than a character we didn't really use that language of theatre and so I learned my channeling
00:21:05.180 abilities through working on these processes where I was channeling archetypes within the
00:21:13.320 context of a theatrical production that was secretly a magical order conducting rituals
00:21:21.580 for the public to go through um so that was kind of that's kind of my background and then
00:21:28.380 also working um from a scandinavian folk magic practice here in shetland um and the living
00:21:36.980 tradition of specifically Shetland folk magic then channeling usually we're talking about
00:21:45.940 necromancy so talking to the dead talking to the spirits of the dead and so I kind of used
00:21:55.440 used all of my backgrounds to figure out ways to channel the spirits of the women I am writing
00:22:03.900 about who have some of whom have been dead for hundreds of years, some of whom have been dead
00:22:09.500 for not quite so long. And I just spent a lot of time with each woman. I did, you know, a heck of
00:22:18.880 a lot of research when I was writing the book about all aspects of these women's lives, what
00:22:23.920 people had written about them, what they had written about themselves, interviews in some of
00:22:31.560 the more more recent um women i was writing about then you know had television interviews
00:22:39.300 sybil leak for example was often on bbc tv uh a great british broadcasting corporation
00:22:47.280 um and so there's a lot of material to work with just to to get a flavor of these women because 1.00
00:22:54.800 for me don't want to approach somebody without knowing a bit a fair bit about them and about 1.00
00:23:00.120 whether you even want to get in touch with them which was a big part of my kind of sifting process
00:23:06.700 when it came to writing the book who do I want to write about who am I going to get along with
00:23:11.020 who am I maybe not going to get along with and am I willing to try that anyway um so I'd work for
00:23:18.940 a few months at a time on um working with each woman and I just spend that couple of months um
00:23:27.740 specifically chatting to yeah that one woman who I was building a relationship with 0.91
00:23:34.980 and I'm not going to go into the specific methods I would use when I sit down and talk to them
00:23:43.120 because that feels very private and very sacred to me and not something I can talk about but
00:23:49.980 My background in creating rituals definitely informs what I did.
00:23:56.700 So there's the channeling aspect and then there's the putting the gleanings from this channeling into a ritual format that will work for people who are practicing magic today.
00:24:13.920 And so, yeah, there's a lot of stuff going on there, mechanically speaking.
00:24:19.980 um and i think what came out of it is quite an accessible set of rituals really uh accessible
00:24:27.600 set of spells and practices and i think that comes from just being able to over time develop
00:24:35.280 a way of channeling where you can you can really um hone your communication abilities it's like
00:24:44.380 honing your communication abilities with living human beings you know you just got to be nice
00:24:49.800 you've got to be polite and I think the basics of channeling come down to the basics of communication
00:24:54.520 in particular you know active listening um so I also have some training in counseling and that
00:25:01.800 really helped me you know just the real you know daily life stuff of being a counselor
00:25:07.260 and talking therapy and yeah for me channeling it's it's not hugely different from just having
00:25:17.360 a conversation with somebody who is you know physically manifest in this room right now
00:25:25.920 um like chatting to you um so that's that in terms of sort of working from traditional texts
00:25:37.020 you know grimoires and so on I would also use the recipe book analogy I think that's a really good
00:25:42.520 one in terms of you have i know i'm talking a lot about structure here but i think that is so
00:25:47.960 important you know that container that tunnel that structure um you thinking about yeah using the
00:25:55.480 the structure of a recipe and then dabbling a bit in the creation of of um a recipe that suits you
00:26:06.660 so you're using this you know grimoire whatever as as the basis of whatever you're doing and then
00:26:13.340 you're just playing mix and match in a way sometimes I think it can start off like that
00:26:18.220 you just feel like you're yeah you're playing some mix and match kind of game and seeing what
00:26:25.460 works it's such an experimental thing and I think over time you you gather your own set of
00:26:30.860 correspondences and you learn narratives of plant beings animal beings you know so much of it is
00:26:39.020 about um Rachel is about constructing a good story a story that you can tell yourself a story that you
00:26:45.700 can tell the spirits that you're working with um and when it comes to creating stories then you
00:26:53.340 just have to spend a lot of time chatting to those plants yeah Loretta what can you add as
00:27:00.660 the death witch 1.00
00:27:02.600 about this sort of like
00:27:04.500 cultural fear
00:27:06.500 that we have around you know the dead
00:27:08.580 or talking to the spirits
00:27:10.660 of the dead what can you add to that
00:27:12.520 for us
00:27:13.100 it's
00:27:16.780 I think
00:27:22.540 it's really interesting
00:27:24.440 for me
00:27:25.380 you know having
00:27:27.600 grown up truly
00:27:30.200 with death um you know my sister was killed when I was 12 my father passed when I was 18
00:27:39.240 and it's she's always been there you know um so it death is something that I've always
00:27:48.920 I was really forced to get really comfortable with um
00:27:52.920 death in my home um you know my father chose to die at home um and it's so it's it's always
00:28:04.340 really interesting to me and you know it's not like to shame anyone or to but to enter into
00:28:13.000 these traditions and you know all of these traditions are spirit-based you know it's
00:28:19.340 there's all of this work requires us to commune and communicate with spirits to conjure spirits
00:28:29.060 otherwise um we're missing a huge opportunity to make our work that much more effective um you know
00:28:37.740 the spirit of of corn the spirit of the grass like it's its own being
00:28:47.380 and it's going to do what it's going to do, but it will be so much more effective if you can
00:28:54.220 conjure the spirit and getting to know your ancestors and also getting to know the ancestors
00:29:02.320 of the traditions. So getting really comfortable with looking into death and looking into the
00:29:11.040 information that the dead have to offer us people don't realize you know that when we are
00:29:18.320 we're reading a a text from someone who's no longer with us that's you're you're conjuring
00:29:26.540 that spirit you're seeking information from the dead so the types of and I love that you brought
00:29:37.680 this up you know this learning how to get to know and have conversations with spirits it just
00:29:44.340 you do it all the time even if you don't necessarily realize that's what you're doing
00:29:49.560 but slowly getting comfortable with that and easing into it and you know asking for permission
00:29:57.400 and getting to know what spirits you don't you do and you don't get along with um
00:30:04.520 will be really helpful in your practice. I mean, I, there are spirits that,
00:30:10.720 you know, the, the, the world adores when it comes to these traditions that I just don't get
00:30:18.840 along with, you know, I, and I don't want to, you know, that's, that's another thing is not every
00:30:25.960 spirit is for everyone and that's okay. Like I've gotten to be very okay with the knowing that the
00:30:32.580 spirit of Alistair Crowley is is not for me I feel that speaking of problematics um how and
00:30:45.680 and Una wrote in in her book about um doing a ritual to protect sex workers and I want to turn
00:30:53.140 to you Una but first I want to know Loretta like what role does or can ritual have in our political
00:31:01.020 activism? It has every role. And this is one of the reasons I think it's so important to, 0.80
00:31:13.000 as we're approaching traditions, study the history of tradition. I know I sound like a
00:31:18.000 broken record, but history matters so much. You know, the history of,
00:31:23.140 people will find that the history of most traditions is rooted in seeking justice
00:31:31.660 um and seeking justice and the identity of the witch the hoodoo the worker the magician is
00:31:42.840 highly political and not everybody wants to hear that but it is the undeniable truth
00:31:50.520 and if we if those of us who have because this this work isn't easy right like I'm
00:32:03.180 conjuring the spirit of the crossroad at 3 a.m like that that's not something that
00:32:09.940 my neighbor's probably doing so those of us who do
00:32:14.740 answer that like scream to to engage in this work I personally believe that we all have a an
00:32:29.360 obligation to enter into contracts to make this world a better place for everyone but especially
00:32:39.920 especially for people in our marginalized communities.
00:32:45.780 Una, same question, but I want to add ritual as political activism,
00:32:51.260 as performance art. How do, how do those three things,
00:32:57.220 listeners, I'm just making my open hand into a fist.
00:33:01.300 I don't know what the word is for that. How do we,
00:33:03.400 how do these things intersect for you?
00:33:05.220 hmm sure so yeah when i was when i was working in foolish people the the each company magical order
00:33:15.860 um then those things yeah were just naturally packaged together for us like yeah as letter
00:33:28.440 Loretta says then you can't do this work without it being inherently political you're seeking
00:33:39.660 change you're seeking transformation in so many minute and massive ways and to not extend that
00:33:47.140 outwards into the world that desire for change then that feels so selfish and I think often
00:33:54.180 beyond that even if we are you know think of ourselves as i'm in this for me i'm in this for
00:33:59.260 personal transformation then even unawares that transformation seeps beyond us out into the world
00:34:07.260 um we see this even with you know some healthier forms of wellness culture you know there's a real
00:34:16.120 nasty tinge to a lot of wellness culture as we know but somebody who's just you know going to
00:34:22.180 therapy and you know maybe taking odd yoga class here and there to feel calm or whatever you know
00:34:29.120 they're gonna they're gonna start communicating differently with those around them they're gonna
00:34:33.900 be maybe a bit kinder better listeners and this is always this ripple effect even if we think we're
00:34:40.140 just doing something for ourselves there's always this ripple effect and for me everything is
00:34:45.000 political you know you can't be outside of politics politics encompasses the whole of life
00:34:53.940 and not just human life either and so yeah this I don't know if there's a ritual we can do or a
00:35:03.060 spell we can perform that is not political um whether we whether we choose to recognize that
00:35:12.560 or not and I think every tiny minute decision we make in our lives is political so magic is not
00:35:21.460 separate from that in any way whatsoever so for me the three things really go hand in hand
00:35:29.360 activism you know politics magic all of this and and we're activists you know I think in a sense
00:35:37.420 we're all activists we're all acting in the world the whole time and we're activists for
00:35:44.760 for good we're activists for bad we're just yeah i think there's no escape from the political it's
00:35:50.300 not a separate sphere that sits over there um and the work we did as a as a theater company
00:35:56.980 yeah everything we did was um very very overtly political we would stage um
00:36:07.120 these huge immersive events in places like for example um conway hall in london for which people
00:36:17.020 did a performance in conway hall which is as long been the center of free thoughts in london and
00:36:22.520 it's now the home of um humanist philosophy although they started holding lots of different
00:36:28.740 kind of occulty events recently i noticed um but i think this is in 2012 when the london olympics
00:36:34.500 was taking place so you know london olympics it's got all sorts of political connotations
00:36:39.840 and the way that london was cleansed of um you know litter even but also what was thought of
00:36:48.460 as human litter you know everything's just pushed out to the edges to make london this shiny
00:36:52.960 sparkling um hyper capitalist place and so you know we'd we'd pick our times and part of
00:37:01.660 ritual and spell work is is picking your moments and as loretta said you know often that means you 0.94
00:37:07.140 know making a regular moment for that to happen so with foolish people that performance at conway
00:37:12.320 hall we you know we were doing it every night for a month and you know that kind of magic 0.56
00:37:19.040 digs deep especially when it's group magic um it yeah um it's it starts up brooding stuff
00:37:28.260 and yeah I think there's also a lot of joy to be had when we take the political seriously
00:37:35.180 and we do the good work um you can find joy in that as well and that's what sustains you
00:37:44.140 hope and joy um it's not all grimy and a lot of it is grimy um but I think a really important
00:37:54.020 thing to mention is that we have to cultivate a joyfulness in our activism um a joyfulness
00:38:01.160 in our hopes for the future and when we perform ritual spells magic in general then a lot of it
00:38:11.180 is about finding the the kind of inner spark that will motivate and move us move spirits um
00:38:19.520 um so yeah i think joy joy deserves a mention there too i do have a question about a kind of
00:38:26.800 a grimy question um for both of you um in terms of our mental health and our spiritual health
00:38:33.240 even our physical health i guess is there a point where rituals can can be unhealthy is there a
00:38:41.380 point that we can get to where we've lost a balance and and doing ritual work can be um
00:38:47.340 detrimental to us loretta you're nodding so oh is nodding too we got two yeses
00:38:56.880 i feel like um one of the the ways that that can happen is through bypassing actually where you
00:39:06.400 know people will perhaps convince themselves that that's all that they have to do um i can light a
00:39:16.280 few candles and then that's where it stops for me um i think that a that has to get like actually
00:39:25.480 physically exhausting because you're refusing to engage in the the physical world so the spirit
00:39:34.440 is just going to be drained right um i think that there is you know your rest is sacred
00:39:42.520 and knowing being self-aware enough in this work to know when you have to step back and
00:39:52.940 when you you have to to rest your physical body but also allow your spirits the spirits that you
00:40:01.460 are in contract with to rest um another piece that i think is really important in that is
00:40:10.720 you know this is where being like being like a two-headed worker um comes in because if you're
00:40:20.240 only exercising the muscle of only justice and while that's righteous and that's it's justified
00:40:30.640 to seek justice you know you then what do you do to exercise this other muscle you know
00:40:40.400 in like you said like seeking joy allowing yourself to feel joy because when this all when
00:40:47.540 this is all when this part of history is done we still have to be able to rebuild
00:40:55.380 so if we forget to work out the muscles of joy of abundance of pleasure of laughter then there's
00:41:07.240 nothing left, you will not have the energy to rebuild. Also, there is a time and a place
00:41:15.940 for your voice and your work. And there's a time and a place to step back and let the work and the
00:41:25.180 voice of other people take the forefront. So I think that there's a few different ways as far as
00:41:33.100 you know mental health and physical health can go that it can become unhealthy when you're when
00:41:40.140 you're running fully on ego and you're not allowing other people to have a space in the conversation
00:41:48.520 um and when you're just like go go go go go and then you forget to exercise or allow the other
00:41:58.340 head to work or when you're just bypassing you know i'm just gonna do i'm just gonna lay down
00:42:06.580 work i'm just gonna do magic i'm not gonna engage in the real world i'm not gonna check on my
00:42:11.500 neighbors um that's not good for anyone either una do you want to expand on that idea do you
00:42:22.520 have anything to add sure so this is a really juicy question I love it um one of my favorite
00:42:30.640 topics is is magic and and mental health or specifically what we what psychiatrists um call
00:42:39.620 and you know capitalism calls mental illness I live with what is termed bipolar disorder I
00:42:47.180 I go through phases with what I prefer to call it at the moment it's just manic depression I think
00:42:52.400 that kind of sums up nicely and it has historical connotations that I find helpful but yeah I love
00:43:00.980 this question but I'm a disaster when it comes to figuring my way around how to engage as a magical
00:43:12.380 practitioner who experiences madness with a capital M and I suppose the writing of Muses
00:43:20.100 no more was a kind of a kind of uh hugely messy chaotic experience for me in which my mental
00:43:28.220 health became very skewed and bizarre um so I I was you know I was working and not paying attention
00:43:38.960 to self-care and so on I've always been pretty bad at self-care to be honest it's something I've
00:43:44.720 really struggled with and while writing the book then that went out the window my partner she
00:43:52.520 effectively became my carer I'm not gonna and I don't say that lightly um you know I was sitting
00:43:58.280 in bed working all hours and you know doing my magical work in in this bedroom I'm sitting in
00:44:06.740 um and I I really went pretty pretty off kilter and grew increasingly manic and a lot of that
00:44:19.840 was fueled by this magical work I was undertaking and it was certainly going into the magical work
00:44:24.720 I was undertaking which became ever more frenetic and the I think it was the week in which I
00:44:32.580 I'd finished the book and the week I finished writing the introduction I had a full-blown
00:44:40.180 breakdown I was hospitalized twice in a very short period of time I won't go into the details
00:44:47.020 because we'd probably need a content warning on there but it was it was really it was really grim
00:44:52.400 time and then there was this long long period of collapse and recuperation and I needed time away
00:44:58.840 from magical practice because it you know this entanglement had become pretty pretty dangerous
00:45:07.360 actually I think practicing magic can be incredibly dangerous both physically and mentally
00:45:15.120 psychologically and for me that's often been the case the same when I was working with foolish
00:45:21.140 people then i i similarly became very unwell my mental health went really off the cliff and that's
00:45:31.480 why i really eventually left the group after after years of working with them and took a long period
00:45:36.520 away from magic uh and so yeah i have no answers to that one it's something i explore a lot and i
00:45:47.080 love talking to people about and um if any listeners ever want to email me about that
00:45:53.460 it's a topic it's like a research topic of mine um collecting stories about practicing magic as a 0.63
00:46:01.220 capital M mad person um yeah I have no answers I'm a I'm a disaster I've certainly heard teachers
00:46:07.480 certain teachers saying you know you should never practice magic if you're if you're in a in a um
00:46:14.100 mental health episode or whatever
00:46:16.580 mental illness episode and
00:46:18.140 I've completely broken that rule a million
00:46:20.500 times and suffered for it to be honest
00:46:22.400 so yeah I'm a real glutton
00:46:24.520 for punishment I have
00:46:25.880 I have very
00:46:28.660 little reliable advice to offer
00:46:30.760 on that one
00:46:31.420 right there
00:46:33.640 I'm learning too
00:46:36.080 Loretta have you cultivated
00:46:38.620 any like checks and balances
00:46:40.200 for yourself and your work
00:46:42.140 that might help Una
00:46:43.580 in her study um yes please
00:46:47.700 you know because so much of my work is um geared towards creating balance you know where I stand
00:46:59.900 um and also creating balance in in my own legacy um something my my my husband actually
00:47:13.160 said something to me about four years ago that it was like the thing that really clicked for me
00:47:20.540 um my birth mother uh was an activist um was her entire life and she like
00:47:32.780 walked that way every single day and she died that way and
00:47:40.560 you know during the um George Floyd uprising here in the states um because I am a guest in
00:47:51.100 the magical tradition that I work in I'm I'm Iranian um and who do root work and conjure
00:47:58.740 belong to the black folks I'm a guest at that table so I knew that not only was it something 0.98
00:48:09.720 that I owed the spirits but also the ancestors of the tradition but also just like fucking human 0.96
00:48:18.000 beings right was to be there and to be there every day and you know I still have scars on my legs 0.77
00:48:28.180 from the from getting shot with tear gas rounds but something that my husband said to me during
00:48:38.820 that time was it feels like you are intent on living your mother's legacy and it's going to
00:48:52.380 kill you just like it killed her and that when he said that it just it felt like getting like 0.93
00:49:00.880 punched in the throat. And since then, I have created checks and balances for myself in the 1.00
00:49:13.860 sense that if I'm, if I am crying from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed, because I'm
00:49:21.860 on my phone and I'm like seeking out information and I can't turn off the news. Um, and I haven't
00:49:32.160 gone outside, you know, if I haven't tended to my garden, if I have forgotten that there is
00:49:40.720 even more beauty in the world, then I have to step back from that work. I have to give myself
00:49:47.020 three days. Um, and three is, is the number. That's the number that I give myself. Um,
00:49:55.360 and I, I've also learned to, to listen to the spirit of my birth mother and the spirit of my
00:50:03.040 father and to really listen to my ancestors. And, you know, I'm no good if I'm not here
00:50:15.240 for the amount of time that I'm contracted to be here.
00:50:18.940 So really keeping that in mind has,
00:50:22.920 especially in this new wave of things
00:50:26.300 that we're seeing in Iran and just globally in general,
00:50:31.820 that's something that's really helped me
00:50:33.840 to try to be as balanced as possible.
00:50:38.340 I have my moments, but I also, you know,
00:50:42.040 I have my elders who,
00:50:45.240 my teacher my elders the my siblings in our lineage are pretty good at like checking me
00:50:52.840 when i need it and that's an odd thing for me being the the oldest sibling in our in our lineage
00:50:59.960 um but sometimes i just need a good old-fashioned like check you know that sounds like being in
00:51:09.400 community is like an integral aspect of of these you know working with magic but also like being
00:51:17.260 a human being right um loretta in an interview you said hold on let me get it exactly right
00:51:23.740 in a different interview you said the second that you're open to magic magic will find you
00:51:30.300 and i want to hear from you and i want to hear from una too what does that feel like for our
00:51:35.060 listeners who feel disconnected from a magical practice what does it feel like when magic finds
00:51:41.200 you it feels like
00:51:49.220 it feels like you it's like the moment you realize that this life is
00:52:04.760 happening even outside of your awareness um it's a it's a really funny thing because
00:52:13.100 it's like opening your eyes for the first time you know it's
00:52:20.920 you know looking at your house plants and realizing that they come from somewhere
00:52:30.020 that their spirits are wild that they're not actually as tamed as we believe that they are
00:52:36.860 and it's looking into your pet's eyes and knowing that they're communicating with you
00:52:44.760 and being able to understand that communication it's recognizing that that feeling in your gut
00:52:54.080 that tells you to turn around and walk the other way
00:52:58.840 when you're walking alone.
00:53:00.860 And you realize that that comes from somewhere
00:53:03.420 that's beyond physicality.
00:53:07.600 But once you are aware of it,
00:53:09.760 there is absolutely no way to turn it off.
00:53:15.280 It's life-changing.
00:53:18.180 Una, what does it feel like when magic finds you?
00:53:21.520 hmm that's such a beautiful quotation Loretta um I think it feels like a subtle shift in
00:53:35.040 the quality of your presence and perception a widening of your perception so
00:53:43.680 a way I often think about it is you know when we're when we're looking out of our eyes
00:53:50.420 um then we we do have this this way of switching off what's happening in our peripheries
00:53:59.340 um whereas if you widen your gaze it's a very physical you know it's really a mindfulness
00:54:06.420 practice if you widen your gaze and watch out for your peripheries your whole perception of
00:54:11.760 the world changes and so for me yeah there's there's presence in the arrival of magic there's
00:54:19.040 a shift in perception um and also there is an intimacy um between you what is you and what
00:54:29.500 isn't you and an awareness of the fact that you are many many different beings it's kind of like
00:54:41.260 you're saying about you know understanding the the anatomy and workings of a planet it's like
00:54:46.360 you know we're we're colonies of bacteria we spread out into the world our breath moves through
00:54:52.440 the air and other people are swallowing it it's like yeah it's a feeling of intimacy with everything
00:54:58.100 all at once all time spanning back through history spanning out into the future from
00:55:03.380 going right into the core of the earth and out through the other side into space it's like
00:55:08.360 it's intimacy with all of that and that's a really astonishing feeling it's like falling
00:55:16.240 in love um and not the kind of you know short-term lusty fling but like actual you know deep love
00:55:24.200 i want to thank you both for underscoring the idea that ritual work is inherently
00:55:33.740 political and world changing personally and politically that the personal is political
00:55:41.080 but that there are workings outside of candle lighting that also need to be done thank you
00:55:48.200 both very much for that um before we completely wrap um Loretta what's the best way for our
00:55:54.940 listeners to support your magic um i have a little shop uh the death witch dot black um i also
00:56:06.020 offer consultations um through ritual craft um both in person and virtually um and just
00:56:18.100 with the spirit of the algorithm being very shy these days engaging with um Instagram
00:56:25.700 I mostly am on there I don't really post much on TikTok because I'm I don't understand it
00:56:33.220 but I enjoy watching other people's posts um yeah that's where you can find me thanks how about you
00:56:40.600 una um so i have a patreon where i publish new writing and i'm also pretty active on instagram
00:56:49.620 uh so you can find me at una of the peat bog a nice little reference to the shetland islands here
00:56:57.100 um so yeah you know the peat bog on patreon and on instagram you're also always welcome to send
00:57:04.440 me an email um if you'd like to discuss anything magic and madness anything to do with my book
00:57:11.680 muses no more which is available wherever you can buy books generally um i recommend buying it from
00:57:17.760 an indie occult bookshop if you can um getting it from your library um but yeah my email is
00:57:26.000 unamariablythe at gmail.com and you're very welcome to just yeah send fire off fire off
00:57:33.160 little letter to me I love little letters thank you again both so much you know I'm going to keep
00:57:40.280 this like that what Risa and I are working on here is a recipe book and you have helped me to
00:57:47.900 add a few pages to that recipe book today thank you so much Una thank you so much Loretta for 0.61
