00:00:00.000 You aren't doing a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:07.540 You must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:12.460 O Yuletide, O Solstice, O Longest Night of the Year 0.91
00:00:31.680 We gather together to share our hope and our fear
00:00:40.940 Cause we are witches in the night
00:00:49.760 We are witches
00:00:54.060 We bring our own light to the solstice
00:01:00.780 Merry Yule, witches!
00:01:04.280 Oh, blessed Yule, sisters!
00:01:06.440 Happy winter solstice!
00:01:08.540 we hope you're all warm enjoying the dark do you remember the song you wrote last year of course
00:01:15.480 we're gonna put it in this episode okay yeah and we talked about this last year but um that that's
00:01:25.300 what we feel about this time is that um you know we might not necessarily need each other in the
00:01:30.940 way that we used to in the pioneer times where we'll literally starve to death if we don't have
00:01:37.080 community support i mean some of us are i mean it's more uh it's easier for us to feel like we
00:01:43.900 aren't relying on other people because we can go to the grocery store but like we rely on the
00:01:48.120 farmers and the grocery store clerks of course yeah we definitely have a lot of more stretched
00:01:53.020 out web that makes us feel more lonely i think yeah so at this time like we used to gather for
00:01:59.760 like survival and now we still do that but it's a different kind of survival it's like a spiritual
00:02:04.840 survival a connection you know I'm I'm mostly a solitary witch I joke that I'm a hermit I live
00:02:11.100 in the woods you know I'm very I very rarely experience that feeling of loneliness because
00:02:17.240 there's like just like a constant universe happening around me and inside of me so I don't
00:02:22.880 really get that feeling of loneliness but I also recognize how important other people are in my
00:02:29.800 life again like you said not just the people that are in my family or my close friends that I rely
00:02:34.740 on in this way but also the my grocery store clerk or the farmer who grows my cabbage and the
00:02:40.260 migrant workers who picked the cabbage for the farmer i love them i'm sending you you will love
00:02:45.920 workers and so that's kind of the theme of this episode we want to talk about um family but more
00:02:51.960 so about chosen family about the people who are not necessarily biologically attached to us because
00:02:58.280 honestly this can be a very difficult time of year for people not just because of the darkness
00:03:04.720 and you know the sun rises at like 9 a.m and sets at 3 p.m you know um but um because some people
00:03:13.900 just like feel very uh what are the words hurt by their family or neglected or alienated or
00:03:22.560 misunderstood or you know family dinner is just a fight and um that can be very very difficult
00:03:31.400 navigating and negotiating especially now when we have so much um so much polarization politically
00:03:37.920 people are going to their christmas dinners and not knowing you know necessarily what kind of like
00:03:43.240 oppressive talk they're walking into so we want to give a shout out to the people that we choose
00:03:50.660 to have in our lives and if you don't have a family a biological family that you can trust
00:03:57.900 then your friends are your family you know um i always think about the golden girls how are you
00:04:05.060 gonna deny that rose and blanche and dorothy were a family they had each other's backs they were
00:04:10.800 there for each other they supported each other and just because they didn't have a biological
00:04:15.140 connection. Mine is Dorothy and Sophia, of course. Um, doesn't change anything about the fact that
00:04:20.720 this is a family. Yeah. So Risa, like when you go out friend seeking, what are you looking for
00:04:27.840 in a chosen family member? Hmm. That's a good question. Um, I, uh, I spend a lot of time doing
00:04:36.040 community building for my work and as my chosen passion and profession in life. So I meet a ton
00:04:42.400 of people um i find it pretty easy to get to say like uh if we're talking about like a scale of
00:04:50.480 one to ten in terms of intimacy i find it really easy to get to like a seven like that i will let
00:04:56.200 a lot of people into a seven and i can um i can elicit that from people you know like i can
00:05:02.440 i can make people feel safe and i by making myself a little vulnerable with things that
00:05:07.440 i've already processed you know like um but to go from a seven to an eight or a nine is very rare
00:05:16.840 and those people there's a it's a combination of a real honesty and a real gentleness so i'm
00:05:29.140 looking for someone who is what i aspire to be a little bit when i'm trying to be brave i want to
00:05:37.000 I want to offer that next level of intimacy and, like, show my hurt places and show up for somebody who is going to reciprocate.
00:05:54.100 And, yeah, yeah, I think I'm looking for that combination of a lack of bullshit and a real gentleness.
00:06:00.820 you know i have a like a you know you christmas for me was very painful for a really long time
00:06:09.260 i um i'm from like what do you politely call like a blended family right and um my stepdad's family
00:06:19.220 there was some drinking and really noisy irish catholic a lot of joy there but a lot of stuff
00:06:26.940 that was terrifying to me from like, uh, you know, my mom's family were like farm people in
00:06:33.500 Ontario. I'd never heard anybody talk really above a whisper, like, you know, and my, you know,
00:06:39.500 my dad, great person and great family, but they just weren't in my life when I was a kid. So I,
00:06:44.640 I didn't know about the rambunctiousness of the Danes at that time. Um, and I went as a kid and,
00:06:52.600 had like a scary falling out with my stepdad's dad um and uh i thought i mean i know i saw him
00:07:03.840 shake my little sister when i'd been babysitting her because he was mad that i let them fall
00:07:07.620 asleep in front of the tv and uh he was you know we picked them up to be like wake up go upstairs
00:07:13.860 what are you doing down here um let's just preface for those people who are listening who don't know
00:07:18.980 you personally you have two half sisters who are younger than you and they are the product 10 and
00:07:23.500 12 yeah your mother and your stepfather yeah and they're wonderful right and i'm like jumping into 0.92
00:07:29.120 like some of the most intimate shit in my life because i feel like my these listeners are like
00:07:32.620 friends of ours and i know you are so i'm like here's a story but also it does go back to kind
00:07:37.860 of that that brene brown thing about like share stuff you've already dealt with you know like
00:07:41.980 you can be intimate about stuff that you don't have to put your wounds on other people and ask
00:07:45.880 them to heal them for you when you're in the process of working on that maybe that's for a
00:07:49.180 therapist or a best friend but this is stuff that I came to a beautiful conclusion with so
00:07:55.000 I feel like sharing it it's a your story if you'll allow me so it was it was I was I was maybe 12
00:08:02.280 they came home loud scary yelled at me I went upstairs I told my parents that he had shaken
00:08:11.220 and the girls and you know looking back like I was a pretty dramatic person and it probably
00:08:18.360 sounded like I was saying he violently shook her and he you know he was like waking her up but
00:08:23.620 nobody was at their best that evening to be fair and you were scared I was terrified yeah and my
00:08:30.640 mom in the heat of the moment said you never have to come back here and we drove away the next day
00:08:39.180 And for over 10 years after that, I never went back.
00:08:43.680 Can I just shout out your mom real quickly?
00:08:45.720 Because most of us, our experience would have been be quiet, go downstairs, go give
00:08:51.200 him a kiss, go give him a hug.
00:08:53.240 Right.
00:08:53.760 You know?
00:08:54.360 So brave and so strong of her.
00:08:56.220 But what that meant in practice was that they went back without me.
00:09:00.680 And I spent Christmases alone.
00:09:02.920 At what age?
00:09:04.200 Starting like early teens.
00:09:06.440 And you probably as an early teenager were like, I don't care. 1.00
00:09:09.900 Fuck everybody. 1.00
00:09:11.100 I don't care. 1.00
00:09:12.940 I like TV.
00:09:15.140 My mom used that all the time.
00:09:17.020 She'd be like, well, you said you didn't want to go.
00:09:19.120 And I was like, well, I was 13 and my ego had been bruised.
00:09:23.800 So, of course, I'm going to pretend that I don't want any part of this thing that I've been excluded from.
00:09:28.680 Yeah.
00:09:29.000 But your sisters would go.
00:09:30.480 The whole family would go.
00:09:31.380 The whole family would go.
00:09:32.080 Yeah.
00:09:32.660 Yeah.
00:09:32.820 and you know i don't know how many years there were like that and you know in my head it really
00:09:38.100 became a painful thing and i you know you you have new young kids and you sort of fill in the
00:09:43.900 outs anyway and you're teenagers you fill in the outs of everything anyway and you live in the 0.95
00:09:47.860 suburbs and you fucking hate everything and you're nobody understands an anarchist and nobody gets 0.96
00:09:52.760 you so it all built up into this real bubble of pain that i associated with christmas you know 0.99
00:09:59.200 um I love Christmas I like holidays you know really I like when any you've got 20 people in
00:10:05.500 a room I'm like halfway to tears just because people are together you know uh I like Christmas
00:10:10.800 and you and I have gone to every you know Christmas parades for 10 years in a row together
00:10:15.240 just screaming and clapping screaming and clapping and crying you love Christmas parades more than
00:10:20.760 anyone I've ever met uh-huh and you're you're a total like anarchist you know anti-faith in a way
00:10:26.740 witch you're not anti-faith that's not right no no no i don't know i think faith is often misplaced
00:10:32.180 but um yeah for me i mean aside from yule which i kind of think of as separate from christmas yeah
00:10:39.160 so we're talking about this like coca-cola christmas you know um to me it's the absurdity
00:10:45.280 right if i could live in the theater of the absurd which i most times feel like i do
00:10:51.060 but these are times um halloween is another one you know where you're on the subway with lady gaga
00:10:57.840 and a dinosaur and it's totally normal and everyone just expects it and that's fine
00:11:03.660 and christmas to me is the same thing it's got its own soundtrack it's got its own color story
00:11:09.560 we do the most random things i mean now that we are informed pagan witches we understand why a
00:11:16.100 tree would have been brought into the house or and these kinds of things but um as like a modern
00:11:20.840 person who doesn't have that like yule association it just seems bananas yeah but it's like joyful
00:11:28.000 bananas and those are my favorite favorite kind of crazy like you've seen me go like absolutely 0.92
00:11:34.940 lose my shit santa is coming yeah and he's coming up the road and i can see his chair 0.95
00:11:40.420 And I can see how I'm screaming because at some point in my life, I decided that if you're at a Christmas parade and you can get Santa to, like, make eye contact with you direct, or if you can get Santa to wave back, you're golden. 0.99
00:11:53.340 Yeah, you're set for the year.
00:11:54.720 You're set for the year.
00:11:55.560 And so I make sure, even though, you know, it's a woman in my party. 1.00
00:11:59.820 Santa! Santa! 0.98
00:12:00.780 and um yeah i mean it's just you know i i i feel like it's a really good excuse to be a kid again
00:12:10.480 for those of us who don't necessarily have like a daily practice if you can find like a weird
00:12:18.200 neighborhood parade i highly recommend like actually today we're recording and and it's
00:12:23.780 the santa claus parade in montreal we we saw it go by the window earlier um but that's not the one
00:12:28.840 we go to we would go to the one in on senior bear under the promenade this this you know these weird
00:12:35.420 tiny stores there's really no floats except for santa pickup trucks there's a couple of people
00:12:43.080 like drumming and majoretting and some of them look super stoked to be there and some of them
00:12:47.340 look like they might be doing some community service hours it's just the best it really is
00:12:52.580 the past find a weird parade like i want to tell a story that you made me think of because i mean
00:12:59.380 this is like a five-part story i guess because um one of my first memories and also one of my first
00:13:06.660 christmas memories recently you know this story so we had gone to visit my aunt grace in the
00:13:12.380 nursing home and i was maybe three years old this is like legitimately one of my first
00:13:17.640 memories that but i remember like it was yesterday so we my family my sister my mom and i we go to
00:13:24.480 visit aunt grace and we're all christmassy and we're singing bumpity bump bump bumpity
00:13:30.540 look at frosty go i remember like it was yeah i remember what line of frosty we were on
00:13:35.500 and aunt grace's roommate who up until this point had just been sitting maybe you can hear my chair
00:13:41.460 quietly rocking silently you know with that thousand yard stare you know this is probably
00:13:46.940 a woman who was 105 years old and we're bumpity bump bumpity bump bump look at frosty go and this
00:13:54.260 woman's head snaps up and she screamed shut up shut up that awful singing and this has been
00:14:03.280 this has been like a christmas tradition that my family has been here ever since every year 0.99
00:14:10.040 we're singing christmas carols and one of us will scream shut up shut up that awful 0.99
00:14:14.160 singing. Oh my goodness. Yep. Now fast 1.00
00:14:16.120 forward. Risa and I are friends.
00:14:18.380 We're having this
00:14:19.180 we used to call it a holler because it's
00:14:22.080 not about singing. Christmas carols are not for singing.
00:14:24.300 No. They're just for being a lot
00:14:26.320 harder than you can. Bumpity bump
00:14:28.020 bump. And so
00:14:30.100 before this parade that we were talking about
00:14:31.980 We do punk versions of all our Christmas carols. Yeah.
00:14:33.980 You should try it. If you haven't
00:14:35.320 like fucking punk screamed 1.00
00:14:38.100 holy night. 1.00
00:14:39.480 Went to the class look down on the feast of
00:14:41.560 Stephen. Yeah. Get into the lyrics of
00:14:43.620 Good King Wensley.
00:14:44.460 Play it fast.
00:14:45.020 It's very bizarre, those lyrics.
00:14:47.920 So anyway, fast forward.
00:14:49.420 My father is now living with my partner and I.
00:14:52.460 And we've got some people and we're getting ready.
00:14:54.700 And I could see him.
00:14:55.780 I could see him sitting in his chair.
00:14:57.640 The rage was building.
00:14:58.260 The rage building and building and building.
00:15:00.960 And I was just waiting.
00:15:02.680 I mean, it never happened.
00:15:04.100 He never officially shut up, shut up, that awful scene.
00:15:08.280 His move was more like just sort of mutter swearing as he walked out of the room.
00:15:12.380 When is this going to end?
00:15:14.860 But I'm a believer in the Will Ferrell elf philosophy of the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.
00:15:25.320 That's it.
00:15:25.920 The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.
00:15:28.940 So this is something that we did as a tradition.
00:15:31.420 Yeah.
00:15:32.040 And then before I moved out to the country, the last one we did, if you remember this, Risa, I had recently watched like a short form doc about homelessness and menstruation.
00:15:42.180 yes and what a difficult fucking process that is to deal with and so i knew that there were
00:15:49.360 already going to be five or six people coming over so i asked everybody to bring a couple boxes of 0.96
00:15:53.580 tampons yeah and i did what we called a tampon drive yeah and we filled like two big grocery
00:15:59.680 box bags and then my favorite part of the story is my husband who looks like a lumberjack very
00:16:10.140 scary. He's like lumberjack
00:16:11.860 Zach Galifianakis. Yeah, yeah, you know
00:16:13.860 he's bearded, he's big, he looks like an
00:16:15.920 enforcer, and he's
00:16:18.000 a contractor so he's often covered in
00:16:19.940 splashes of
00:16:22.100 this and that, but he happened to be
00:16:24.060 working right near
00:16:25.640 Don La Rue, which is
00:16:27.060 a service for young homeless people in Montreal
00:16:29.940 so I asked him if he would drop
00:16:32.180 off my giant bags of
00:16:33.900 tampons for me
00:16:35.620 and of course he walks up to the counter
00:16:38.000 and the woman at the counter 1.00
00:16:39.920 just like she probably assumed he was a homeless person who would come for some aid and she's a
00:16:46.240 and he just kind of throws these two giant bags of tampons at her and she looked inside them and
00:16:54.080 just kind of shrugged and said merci and that was the end of it but i guess all this to say um
00:17:00.300 you can switch up your secret santa maybe we all have too much stuff those of us who
00:17:10.960 like live in this very privileged you know world that we are very lucky to inhabit um but i felt
00:17:18.780 much better about my two grocery bags full of tampons than i would have with whatever else
00:17:25.580 i don't know if i told you but i played the passover holiday show that year and i wrote to
00:17:32.900 noah who's a wonderful local organizer here in montreal because he takes donations at the door
00:17:38.340 and he was asking for canned goods and i told him i sent him links and told him um you know that we
00:17:43.940 had sort of recently become aware of this need especially for women who are homeless and so he
00:17:49.660 added it to all the promotional materials for passover for like the three years after that so
00:17:53.380 people were coming see yeah the smallest things you can do can have a rippling effect yeah and
00:17:59.560 you never know where things end you'll hear sometimes you'll hear 10 years later that you
00:18:04.040 had an impact on somebody and sometimes you'll never hear oh yeah oh yeah hearing about it is
00:18:08.480 not the thing we've encountered this so many times with so many of our witches who were vindicated
00:18:13.020 like decades after they died even yeah i mean this is like a a main thrust that i come back to
00:18:20.060 in most of my writing is that um you just have to do the thing and not be so because you really
00:18:26.540 can't know you genuinely cannot know how your actions are going to affect people for better
00:18:31.640 and for worse people i'm not just talking about community care i'm also talking about being a 1.00
00:18:35.160 fucking asshole you don't know how you're going to affect people so you have to be conscious of 1.00
00:18:41.500 that but at the same time you just have to let it go yeah and trust your vision your best thing 1.00
00:18:45.580 So that feels like a good segue to tell you the end or at least the next piece of my Christmas story.
00:18:53.960 Oh, yes.
00:18:55.080 Oh, wait.
00:18:55.840 We never resolved it.
00:18:57.200 And I was leaving it hanging to the perfect entry point.
00:18:59.840 You just delivered it to me on the plate.
00:19:03.220 So years go by.
00:19:05.480 Angsty teenage Christmases alone.
00:19:07.980 Pretty sad about it, actually. 0.99
00:19:09.500 That's pretty fucking sad, bro. 0.97
00:19:10.740 Like, over time. 0.97
00:19:11.400 I'm surprised that I've never heard about this before.
00:19:13.260 You know, all your Christmas joy that we shared.
00:19:16.300 And I've had beautiful Christmases also, but I just never went to that part of the family for many years.
00:19:23.320 And it was hard.
00:19:25.100 My sisters would go and they had these bonds with people that I felt like there was this secret that no one knew that I had had this painful encounter and I wasn't.
00:19:33.920 And somehow it was never resolved.
00:19:36.020 And I really thought of my stepdad's father as like a very violent person.
00:19:40.680 Like, I thought I had been, like, expelled from the family because I had called out some violence.
00:19:46.680 And that's something that happens.
00:19:48.460 And that happens a lot.
00:19:49.160 For real.
00:19:49.900 Yeah.
00:19:50.680 Yeah.
00:19:51.520 And finally, I was in my mid-20s and I was seeing a life coach, which is, like, a therapist.
00:20:00.800 But they talk to you a lot about what you want for future outcomes and less, like, about what you went through in the past. 0.98
00:20:06.620 And some of them are, like, cheesy and shitty and some of them are fucking incredible. 0.98
00:20:09.780 Mm-hmm. 0.99
00:20:10.480 And some of them are witches, you know, because they're really just going to talk to you about how you're going to change the world that you're in.
00:20:17.840 And that's what we do as witches.
00:20:20.000 And this woman asked me, and I was talking to her about this and kind of realizing that this was a way that my life was frozen.
00:20:29.260 But I didn't have a resolution to this.
00:20:31.540 And it just sat in my heart and came up every year.
00:20:35.300 And it was a wall between me and my family.
00:20:37.840 and and she asked me well what's your ideal like what do you want coming up like what what's what's
00:20:45.700 the dream vision how does the universe change what does it look like and there was a um a wedding
00:20:52.140 anniversary coming up for my stepdad's sister and her partner so that side of the family you know
00:20:58.860 and I was like I want to go I want to stop not going I want to go I want to dance at the party
00:21:05.280 i want to leave it all behind like i actually don't want like a big fight and a tearful resolution
00:21:10.820 and calling it out and stuff like i also just know that's not really possible and like i don't
00:21:15.920 that's not what i need when i look in my heart what i need i need to dance at this celebration 0.98
00:21:20.440 and just like have my hair flying and be with my sisters and not give a fuck like i want to dance 0.95
00:21:25.700 at their party and be unwounded or like or or carry my wound like a part of the joyful bouquet 0.96
00:21:31.860 that is myself and just be there you know like I want to go basically and she was like well think
00:21:37.600 about that and then um think about what you're gonna wear you know it was amazing and I wore
00:21:43.720 a green wool dress and I went with my family and I danced at the party and that was I didn't really
00:21:49.580 talk to um the grandparents that much was polite and but I danced with my family and I was there
00:21:56.360 and I went to one or two things after that and and then um my grandfather got very sick
00:22:02.040 and he was in the hospital and I went um with my sisters and my stepdad and he was in hospice care
00:22:09.980 and on my way there with my mom separate in a car we were taking two cars for some reason
00:22:17.140 I talked to her for the first time about this memory of mine you know and her telling me
00:22:23.440 and crying upstairs and the shaking and the violence
00:22:28.260 and never going back.
00:22:29.760 And she said, yeah, it was horrible when we drove away that day.
00:22:33.940 The last time you were there, I don't know if you remember,
00:22:38.020 but your grandfather drove in the car next to us
00:22:40.860 for 20 minutes crying.
00:22:45.460 I didn't see him.
00:22:47.560 I didn't know.
00:22:48.400 I was crying, you know?
00:22:49.620 if i had known it was a wound for him too you know i stayed away for a long time
00:22:57.640 and he didn't want me to stay away and he didn't want me to be hurt or scared he didn't want any
00:23:01.960 of that to happen he was a flawed big lumberjack flawed person you know anyway i heard that story
00:23:10.120 and i went in and he was in hospice care and he was in his chair and he was like so happy that i
00:23:16.300 was there yeah he took my hand and like i realized in that moment like i'm not gonna get a big
00:23:24.200 conversation about this that's not something that's emotionally available to either of us
00:23:28.760 but that's also fine like maybe that's something that happens in a different sphere 0.87
00:23:33.540 maybe that's something that happens in my ritual or in my fucking journal or something but in this 0.91
00:23:39.620 moment what i get is he's holding my hand i'm happy he has tears in his eyes i mean what words 0.97
00:23:45.480 are there that could you came you came and so in a way this family that was never mine is like
00:23:53.620 very much in my heart and it i think that it does go back to children family in a circuitous way
00:24:00.740 because i think if there are people in your life that you want or if there are places you want to
00:24:07.260 be and feel like you're allowed to take up space you want to dance at those parties like i want
00:24:12.640 that to be available to you and no one gives you that permission but you really you know to feel
00:24:17.680 loved and whole and welcome in a space people might be assholes but like you are whole and you
00:24:23.360 are welcome in this world yeah and chances are the people that are going to have a problem with you 0.56
00:24:30.020 especially as a child um are bringing their own baggage i mean i have a stepfather and he said
00:24:38.320 to me once as an adult, you know, he, he and my mother got together when I was 11. And
00:24:43.060 one time when I was in my twenties, he said to me, you know, we were fighting. I had come
00:24:47.480 home for a visit, which inevitably turned into a fight. He said to me, you know, you
00:24:53.120 know, Amy, I knew we weren't going to get along before I even met you. And yeah, you're
00:24:59.140 kind of like, Ooh, but for me, that was a fucking gift that he gave me because in that 0.96
00:25:06.180 moment I knew it wasn't anything I had done it had nothing to do with me he literally told me 0.95
00:25:12.520 before I met you yeah this and that and this and that and I felt this like weight lift from my
00:25:19.360 shoulders because for you know 15 years uh I had assumed it was me that I was the problem you know
00:25:27.600 and there were so many things that we thought about um that are really really personal for him
00:25:33.040 If it were just personal for me, I would tell you, but, um, that if I had had certain pieces
00:25:38.060 of information that were kept from me, those fights would never have happened, you know?
00:25:43.700 So again, uh, we were talking about vulnerability and honesty and, um, my, my entire life would
00:25:51.620 have been different if, if my parents, my stepfather and my mother had been honest with
00:25:56.040 me, you know, about many things, not just this like thing that I'm thinking of in particular,
00:26:00.360 but um there were just no conversations it was like this is where you live now this is what you
00:26:06.440 this is who lives in your house now you know i i was raised by television and and a lot of what i
00:26:12.080 learned about life came from television and on television they would have these things called
00:26:17.440 family meetings where everyone would sit down and talk about what was happening and i'd be like
00:26:22.560 this was not something that occurred in my house it was like there's a new sheriff in town 0.97
00:26:26.940 and he doesn't fucking like you right he decided he decided before he met you that he didn't like 0.96
00:26:34.780 you and it didn't matter how much you tried to connect with him it really didn't matter and 0.98
00:26:38.660 so again that was like this theme of chosen family this was someone that my mother
00:26:43.920 chose to be in my family um that i had that i had no say about but i also didn't have this
00:26:51.140 biological thread yeah um you know he and i have gotten to a better place it's certainly not
00:26:56.920 a perfect relationship and i definitely still i try not to envy it's not a good look for me but
00:27:03.620 i see people who have these like very very very familial relationships with their step families
00:27:09.740 where it's not even a question that it's just like we're all the same and we're you know
00:27:14.120 um so yeah i envy that in my darker moments for sure but i also again like i don't have a big
00:27:21.400 extended family my father's side of the family all lived in hungary and i never met most of them
00:27:26.820 um so a lot of um people that i choose to spend my time with are the people that i'm choosing to
00:27:35.800 spend my time with especially now um recently as you all know we both live in the woods and so it's
00:27:43.020 not like the drop by culture that we were used to before um so it has to be very intentional for me
00:27:50.240 to spend time with people which is really works well for me in my sort of half hermit half love
00:27:55.800 bug and um like i feel like my partner has my back so fundamentally um and that to me is like
00:28:07.020 the measure yeah like do i feel like this person um would stand up for me if i weren't in the room
00:28:14.700 right um do i feel like this person you know when people are talking shitty about somebody else i
00:28:20.860 always have to think to myself is this how they talk about me when i'm not in the room
00:28:24.680 you know um and uh some of us are lucky that we get to choose who we spend time with
00:28:31.200 some of us do not get to choose some of us have to choose either or um some people have to make
00:28:38.700 an either or decision about who they're going to spend their time with for example queer people
00:28:44.280 whose parents or extended family are homophobes and so you can't bring benjamin with you because
00:28:52.240 you know uh it's gonna make problems you know um and if that's the case i really would suggest
00:29:00.880 that you choose the people who make you feel good about yourself if you have to choose between
00:29:05.740 your family obligation or your best friend and a hot cocoa and a blanket like y'all yeah do what's
00:29:13.760 right for you find that friend yeah and keep keep working and moving in circles and volunteering
00:29:20.960 and finding activist circles and art circles
00:29:22.880 and going to queer shelters and stuff
00:29:25.520 until you find your safe place, you know? 0.85
00:29:27.980 Like, you'll find them.
00:29:29.720 And speaking of this,
00:29:31.080 we're going to throw now to an interview 1.00
00:29:32.660 with some amazing witches slash community builders 1.00
00:29:37.460 slash a couple of gents 0.97
00:29:39.700 who have been a couple since high school 1.00
00:29:41.760 and have taken that love for each other
00:29:45.000 and just put it into our community. 1.00
00:29:47.480 Coven mothers. 0.99
00:29:48.300 You might know them as Ryan and Mathieu.
00:29:50.960 but you more likely know them if you know them as Selma God and Uma God.
00:29:56.060 So take a listen now to a conversation real quick that I had with them
00:29:59.560 and their thoughts on the idea of Chosen Family.
00:30:02.600 I'm so excited to be sitting with two of my favorite queens in all the land,
00:30:09.800 Selma and Uma God.
00:30:12.580 If you could start by introducing yourselves so our listeners know whose voice is who
00:30:17.620 and who they're hearing.
00:30:19.000 So I'm Uma God.
00:30:20.380 I'll be speaking in my regular voice today, just for clarity's sake.
00:30:24.940 Can we hear Uma's voice just for a second so our listeners get there?
00:30:28.300 You might know me a little better on stage with a little bit of an accent and, you know, a slightly different voice.
00:30:33.920 But just to keep people from bleeding out of their ears, I'm going to talk like this.
00:30:38.900 Perfect. And I'm going to try to keep my laughter out of my microphone if that voice does come up again.
00:30:44.600 I love it. And Selma?
00:30:46.700 Yes, and this is Selma God, Mistress of Business, and the Supreme of Montreal Coven.
00:30:54.180 I'm clapping my hands, not too loudly, but yeah, I love that show. 0.56
00:30:58.580 And you two kind of inspired this year's Yule episode theme of Chosen Family because you're witches.
00:31:06.220 But you've also really built a family together, like together and within your community.
00:31:11.380 So we'll get into your shows and everything and all the amazing drag stuff and your beautiful coupleness and love and regard for each other.
00:31:19.020 But I want to start sort of from scratch and ask, what is a witch and how do you fit into that?
00:31:26.800 I mean, I have been practicing some form of witchcraft ever since I was in the sixth grade.
00:31:34.480 And I kind of am one of those people that's like very vague and just kind of like, if you say you're a witch, you're probably a witch.
00:31:40.360 i mean it's it's the you know working magic aspect but then you know we've seen a bajillion
00:31:48.680 and four ways to work magic so like i'm not gonna judge certainly yeah there's we always say it's
00:31:54.620 the least labely label of all labels because it really can mean anything that you decide that it
00:32:00.940 means and and how do you practice if you don't mind getting into that a little bit like what is
00:32:06.380 your personal practice like um uh so this is uma again um we've been told that we sound the same on
00:32:13.040 the phone so i just wanted to clarify thank you so um yeah my my personal practice i mean um
00:32:19.380 it's evolved over the many years that i've been practicing but you know i i tend to do uh i have
00:32:26.100 an overlap between my religion and my witchcraft but there's this side that's very kind of like
00:32:32.980 herbally sachets and and you know a lot of bathtub witchery is what i what i specialize in
00:32:40.440 um so you know candles and herbs and flowers and and that kind of thing um and then in my
00:32:47.440 religious side um i am a hellenic polytheist so i i worship dionysus and the ancient greek gods
00:32:55.560 And I try to do it in a historically informed way.
00:33:01.300 And then in my worship, I tend to use aspects of my witchcraft as well.
00:33:05.640 So they kind of like cross over a lot.
00:33:08.140 And how did you get drawn to these particular deities?
00:33:11.920 Actually, it's kind of funny because like, you know, being the typical weirdo kid that couldn't be conformist in any way whatsoever.
00:33:20.660 Like, when you start researching, you know, like, what ends up being, like, Neo-Wicca, you know, that's the gateway into so much witchcraft for a lot of people, the first thing that comes up is the ancient Greek gods, right?
00:33:33.840 and so i was like oh that's so basic i'm not even and then i went i went the better part of
00:33:42.520 of like 15 years um kind of feeling that way uh and then i went to a a pagan festival and i had
00:33:51.560 been growing out my hair and somebody gave me a flower crown and then somebody looked at me and
00:33:55.480 was like oh my god you look like dionysus which was really rich because i'm straight like i was
00:33:59.560 straight edge at the time and so for those of you that don't know Dionysus is the god of wine and
00:34:05.200 revelry right so like party hardy right and you were not consuming these things exactly I was I
00:34:12.880 was partying and like we used to go to raves and everything but I was not consuming in any way shape
00:34:17.080 or form and so I thought that was really funny but then it kind of like crept up on me that like
00:34:22.040 everywhere I started going there was all of these symbols and these like I was getting vibes and
00:34:27.260 messages kind of feelings from Dionysus and then my whole life went into chaos and then as I was
00:34:31.980 researching him it was like oh p.s. he's a right he's a life ruiner um in the best way possible
00:34:39.740 sort of like the the tear uh the tower in the tarot exactly yes that that's very that vibe
00:34:46.120 and so I was just like okay listen like I've avoided this my whole life let's see what happens
00:34:50.980 if i dive in and you know i've been doing it now for uh six or seven years uh just kind of like
00:34:59.240 worshiping dionysus in that way so yeah and are you still straight edge um i am not although i
00:35:06.920 still i've never done any drugs um i'm kind of waiting for that moment where it's like okay
00:35:11.960 this is it this is the moment when i'm gonna do it 100 years old by the way when we're 200 years
00:35:18.740 old I'm finally going to do it and it's going to be like a big
00:35:20.840 experience I've decided it's going to be like
00:35:22.800 a big devotional act
00:35:24.940 I drink occasionally
00:35:26.860 but like just because
00:35:28.840 like I like the taste
00:35:30.880 of certain like cute
00:35:32.720 drinks and that's about it
00:35:34.000 delicious cocktails
00:35:35.980 exactly yeah and so Selma
00:35:38.780 your show you do a monthly that's
00:35:40.820 called Coven why
00:35:42.780 why this okay
00:35:44.720 so I'll go back
00:35:46.960 to the original question and then meld into this one oh yes please i am not a particularly
00:35:52.180 religious person um but i am a very um how could i put this i strongly believe in the energies we
00:36:01.860 put out and and witchcraft and how to harness that energy so to me being a witch and witchcraft
00:36:08.000 is channeling your energy towards goals if you haven't noticed i am the mistress of business
00:36:13.060 I am a very pragmatic person. And to me, witchcraft is one of the ways to obtain your goals and one of the ways to focus your energies and your life.
00:36:22.580 I love this that you say like a business, but I know it's not like some capitalist greedy. When you do your shows, you do like an even door split, I think, between everyone who performs.
00:36:36.000 So how do you negotiate the business queen with the community building altruistic queen?
00:36:43.820 Well, to me, that's part of business, right? Business doesn't mean capitalism. Business just means any form of exchange of energies, right? So for me, the moniker of mistress of business is just someone who is going to organize things in a way to achieve a goal. That is business, right? Let's be honest here.
00:37:01.160 Getting shit done. 0.99
00:37:01.920 Yeah, exactly. It's getting shit done. And doing business doesn't mean being a capitalist asshole, necessarily. It's what our society has brought it to. But there's so many other ways of doing business. And I think I'm one of the people that proves in our community here that you can do business in a way that's sustainable and can lift everybody up. And that's one of the things I am very vocal about all the time. And it's very important to me. 0.99
00:37:28.560 Yeah, I've been to a few of the Coven shows, and they're always very emotional. And part of that is because of the way that you host. It's like, very welcoming. And very, I mean, it's tongue in cheek. And you know, there are bratty moments too, of course, it's a drag show. But the underlying current is like, you know, you are beautiful talking to the audience, talking to the performers, you bring your audience up on stage to have their own moment.
00:37:57.000 So, again, I'll ask both of you, like, why is that so important to you?
00:38:01.620 Why is this community building and uplifting, I guess maybe is a better word, aspect of what you do so important to you?
00:38:12.280 Okay, so it's a big question.
00:38:15.400 Yeah.
00:38:16.620 And maybe, oh, well, we'll probably have stuff to add in a different direction to go with it.
00:38:20.520 But let's just start with the aspect of drag, first of all.
00:38:23.860 um drag has exploded over the past 10 years a big part of that is thanks to drag race um
00:38:30.160 drag race yeah grace unfortunately the show is not perfect and neither is rupaul um so let's be
00:38:37.840 real here there's some you know very problematic behaviors and things that have been said um
00:38:42.600 and different people have different opinions but you know for the first of all i think drag is for
00:38:46.320 everybody not just for cis white gay men so that's the first thing of wanting to build communities
00:38:51.700 and make a difference um so those of you that are not familiar with drag i mean i'm not going to go
00:38:57.840 and do the whole tirade about the difference between drag race dragula and drag ethics it's
00:39:02.740 something you can look up really easily we've done a bunch of interviews about it if you look
00:39:05.900 up our names you'll find a bunch of stuff i promise i definitely think there's sort of like
00:39:10.880 what what y'all are doing is more like closer to dragula than to uh to drag race and and by that i
00:39:17.900 I mean, not just the dark witchiness, but also the gender inclusivity, the broader range of what is being allowed to be called drag in that moment or to win a crown or whatever.
00:39:29.900 Yeah, so I started basically doing Coven because Moxie Hollow, who used to do drag with Uma under another name, quit drag and was like, oh, I'd like to start doing it again.
00:39:41.380 I was like, oh, yeah, you know, I could do that.
00:39:43.360 We could do a weird show.
00:39:45.180 I've produced a bunch of monthly shows already.
00:39:47.340 Why not do another one?
00:39:48.500 And I just started coming.
00:39:49.880 That's how Selma started.
00:39:50.860 I was just like, yeah, let's do this.
00:39:53.720 And honestly, it just, I've been floored with the amount of support and how much the show means to everybody in the community.
00:40:02.440 Because it does mean a lot to me, but I wasn't expecting to have this big of a reception on the audience end for the show.
00:40:08.920 And I think for me, what makes it super important, I think what works for the audience is that it's not just a show of like, look how fabulous I am on stage.
00:40:17.340 it's a show of yeah look how fabulous i am on stage and look how amazing we can all be together
00:40:22.240 and let's voice these opinions and these thoughts and let's be there for each other
00:40:27.220 i think that's the that to me is what coven is right it is a coven we're there to to lift each 0.98
00:40:32.340 other's energies up and you know what fuck shit up because um being kind and docile isn't always 0.96
00:40:40.360 the answer sometimes being angry is the right way to do things and there's needs to be space for 0.98
00:40:46.540 that even when you look at more liberal left spaces i think we forget that we can also be
00:40:52.060 angry and that's okay and that's how we get shit done oftentimes if if you're not angry then what 0.81
00:40:58.160 are you going to change it's fine all this is fine this oppression is fine yeah there's a place 0.79
00:41:04.280 for everybody and everybody's needed but yeah i think uma has something to add there um i mean
00:41:09.280 just for me in terms of of why the the community aspect is so important to the drag that we make
00:41:15.180 honestly it all comes back to my first experiences with real live drag performers
00:41:21.040 um unfortunately my first experiences were not positive with them a lot of drag at the time
00:41:27.780 where i'm from was um was kids who were bullied for being femme for being queer they were bullied
00:41:35.260 and then now that they had started doing drag they were the queens of the community so they
00:41:39.540 became the bullies and drag was just kind of their opportunity to be mean to people with like a free
00:41:47.740 license to do whatever they wanted to touch people how they wanted to comment on people's bodies and
00:41:52.200 how they do things and how they talk and how they dance and i hated it it actually made me not want
00:41:57.920 to do drag yeah and so when i started doing drag i said you know like i'm going to be an auntie i'm
00:42:05.760 going to be the nice one that makes people want to come in to see the show i want people to leave
00:42:10.700 my show feeling like they've been seen like they've been uplifted i mean of course you know
00:42:15.620 like i've got snarky comments for everything i'm a very sarcastic person but i never i never want
00:42:22.360 to turn it on the audience you know uh punching up is fine sort of deal but that's part of the
00:42:28.040 reason why community was so important but also when i started drag we started outside of the
00:42:33.900 village we weren't relying on the system that was already in place to get our names and our shows
00:42:40.720 out there and so the only way that we were going to be able to have an audience was for us to
00:42:47.520 reach out to them and to make them feel like they wanted to be there we were we were starting a new
00:42:53.300 thing at the time there was nobody else out of the village that was really doing exactly what
00:42:57.500 we were doing and so a big part of it was like we have to create the community that we want and that
00:43:03.880 community is not going to stick around if we don't make them feel good about being there so you kind
00:43:08.100 of you you get into it on like a practical level and then the more community that you build up the
00:43:12.620 more you support the more you reach out the more you like the more they support the more people you
00:43:18.580 meet and it just gets bigger and bigger and it sort of has become this beacon of light like selma
00:43:24.160 can you tell the story of i believe it was demon who showed up looking for yeah you tell the story
00:43:31.220 So Demand Laslave
00:43:33.580 Who's a super super talented 1.00
00:43:35.140 Drag performer in the city here 0.54
00:43:37.060 Did a few drag competitions
00:43:39.180 In the village and auditions
00:43:40.500 And they were like you know what
00:43:41.600 You should really go check House of Lorraine out
00:43:43.800 Because I think you would fit in
00:43:46.000 You're weird you would fit in there
00:43:47.480 So we're just getting ready at Clio's
00:43:49.360 For when we had our monthly show there
00:43:50.620 And this young guy walks in
00:43:53.860 And walks straight to the bar
00:43:55.860 To see the bartender who's Alain there
00:43:57.480 And he says oh people told me to come here to get booked
00:44:00.140 And Alain just says
00:44:01.220 oh no no don't talk to me about that you have to talk to to selma so demon comes up and walks up
00:44:07.680 to me and says hey people told me i was too weird for the village and come to come see you about
00:44:11.860 doing shows i was like oh okay obviously being who i am i always try to make it out to all the
00:44:18.220 events that have newbies for drag so i had seen demon perform a few times i was like yeah absolutely
00:44:23.520 you're young you have a lot of stuff to learn but i can see the the energy there and the talent is
00:44:27.720 there, so absolutely, and we've been
00:44:29.600 working with Dimun ever since, so she's been a staple
00:44:31.660 in most of our shows
00:44:33.780 honestly. Yeah, and an incredible
00:44:35.820 performer who came
00:44:37.420 to you because they
00:44:39.740 were too weird for this
00:44:41.720 and I love that, too weird, it's like
00:44:43.540 come to me, someone told you you're too
00:44:45.760 weird, come unto me, be with
00:44:47.820 me
00:44:48.200 Yeah, you mean, I wish
00:44:51.300 you know, we have Coven now that's every month
00:44:53.760 and Uma does a church, and like, I wish we could
00:44:55.640 book 20 more performers performers a month you know but like at the end of the day I only have
00:45:00.840 so much energy and I need to make sure that there's gonna be an audience for all the shows
00:45:03.760 so I can pay everybody because that that is a part of business that in our capital society you
00:45:07.880 know I'm yeah I'm putting out shows and I want everybody to have a good time but I I can't do
00:45:12.140 this for free I need to pay my rent and so do my artists you know so there has to be that balance
00:45:16.600 of we give the audience what they want and we do what we want as art right you have to find that
00:45:21.220 fine line which i think coven has done a really good job of doing like coven we have some really
00:45:26.500 freaking weird art but we've found an audience that's there for that art and willing to partake
00:45:32.340 in it and make it a community you know so let's get back to a more um normalized version of family
00:45:41.680 yeah you two are a couple and you have been for a long time can you tell me your cute meat meat
00:45:48.600 cute what do they call it meet cute how did you meet how did you know that each other was the one
00:45:54.360 give some advice to our listeners who are looking to find their soulmate that's not too big of a
00:46:00.840 question is it out of all the ones so far yeah um it's actually okay so this seems to be like a
00:46:09.180 running uh theme throughout my life where like something happens and i'm like hell no and then
00:46:15.300 and then it ends up becoming my life so um selma and i actually met online um on a website for
00:46:22.860 ravers in ottawa and when we started talking both of us thought that the other one was just like
00:46:31.720 hell no i i thought selma was crazy i am yeah and then uh selma thought that i was annoying
00:46:41.560 but like we had no interest in the other one beyond like you know being casually community
00:46:51.180 member friends right like it's we were both candy ravers and so like that there was shared
00:46:56.200 interest but like neither of us was chasing the other down and then we you know we spoke for for
00:47:02.360 for months and then finally met in person and then that just cemented the hell knownness of it all
00:47:06.980 and then randomly at the next rave that we went to together like i was tired at one point and i
00:47:13.760 like took like a 10 minute nap with my head in selma's lap and then on the bus ride back
00:47:20.360 from the party uh selma slept on my shoulder and then we were dating
00:47:24.580 that's the very eighth grade you sat together on the bus and held hands and that was it
00:47:31.380 it was almost it was almost eighth grade yeah it was it was 10th grade actually
00:47:35.720 in high school that's right you met in high school yeah graduation and so okay now i have
00:47:46.220 to ask that i mean our listeners don't know specifically how old you are and i won't ask
00:47:51.200 but we'll assume that 10th grade was a little while ago how do you how do you uh keep love
00:47:58.860 alive in the dark times i mean this is a yule episode it's it's going to be dark from 9 a.m
00:48:04.580 to, I mean,
00:48:06.460 you know what I mean.
00:48:08.000 Basically, the darkness does start at 9 a.m., let's be real.
00:48:10.480 Yeah, when I open
00:48:12.420 my eyes. Hello, darkness,
00:48:14.920 my old friend.
00:48:16.280 So, yeah, how have you managed to navigate
00:48:18.480 this complicated world as a team?
00:48:21.460 Okay, well, first of all,
00:48:22.560 every relationship is different, right?
00:48:24.320 Because what works for us might not work
00:48:26.360 for somebody else, and that's just no...
00:48:28.620 Wait, what? There's no
00:48:30.100 one solution for love?
00:48:32.340 What?
00:48:32.740 it sounds silly to say this way but i always have to say because people look at us like oh how do
00:48:38.140 you do it and then they listen to our story like i would never do that i'm like i know but it works
00:48:41.700 for me and it could work for somebody else but um people often you know love is romanticized i know
00:48:48.320 it sounds silly but love is romanticized you look at books you look at movies we're taught that love
00:48:52.880 works a certain way and there's a formula to it but like you just said in fact there's many
00:48:56.780 formulas and they all work differently for different people um i think the most important
00:49:02.360 thing is to be able to truthfully communicate with each other but also with yourself and what
00:49:11.840 works for us uh and has worked over the years i think is that we're both very very very passionate
00:49:17.540 people and we're very willing to be there for each other for our passions and we want to live life to
00:49:25.860 the fullest and that's what we do and makes us happy so you know being two passionate people
00:49:30.380 yeah we do fight we fight every day you know we'll get mad at each other every freaking day
00:49:34.600 and that's fine because we know that in the end we're gonna move beyond it and get to the next
00:49:40.240 thing and be there for each other and listen and grow from that experience right some people might
00:49:45.080 say oh fighting every day would be exhausting for me i can never do that and that's probably
00:49:49.380 true for them you know yeah well we were talking about earlier like this sort of justified anger
00:49:55.220 and people who are in their relationships and just keep shoving it down
00:49:59.020 and, oh, I'm not going to say anything, oh, I don't want to make him mad,
00:50:01.960 I don't want to this and that,
00:50:03.460 and then it comes out in other more nefarious ways, I think.
00:50:08.040 I mean, my partner and I, I always say, we've been together for a long time too,
00:50:12.320 and I say, you know, we fight more than I've ever fought
00:50:15.560 in any other relationship up to this point,
00:50:17.960 but we also resolve more issues than I've ever resolved
00:50:22.400 with any other partner up to this point.
00:50:25.220 And I mean, I think it's something that's worth mentioning outside of a romantic relationship, especially since you're talking about like, it's that it's that holiday time of year right now. Like, even when you're dealing with your family, the fights sometimes can be healthy, right? Like you have something to say, and you have something to learn. And that's the big thing with Selma and I is that when we fight, every fight is for a reason.
00:50:50.220 it's often because of the same reason over and over and over again but there's always a reason
00:50:55.600 and we both recognize that so like it's not don't fight and it's not wrap up every fight with a cute
00:51:02.260 little bow it's make every fight worthwhile every time you fight make sure that you've
00:51:08.740 expressed something that you needed to express but also maybe that you've you've heard something
00:51:14.460 that your partner whether like the fight partner so whether it's someone in your family a friend
00:51:18.900 your boss your your lover who cares but maybe you've you've heard something that they needed
00:51:24.460 to express because if you're just fighting to get your point out then like it's not going to go
00:51:28.980 anywhere but make every fight count honestly is one of the biggest things that has helped
00:51:33.980 our relationship and it's something that people don't talk about because it makes it sound like
00:51:38.400 we're in a weird unhealthy relationship but i think it's so normal and i love that you brought
00:51:46.980 up the extending this into everyone in your life too like you said it's the holiday season so uh
00:51:54.300 when you're dealing with your family i think choosing your battles but making every fight
00:51:58.980 count is is very very very good advice because we've seen maybe your experience has been different
00:52:05.200 but to me i've seen a lot of intersection between queer people and witches um have you found that
00:52:12.920 oh absolutely and so i actually work at the the store here in montreal melange magic oh really
00:52:20.580 it used to be the president of the montreal pagan resource center and i worked at melange magic and
00:52:27.300 so like this conversation would come up a lot where it was um does witchcraft break people
00:52:33.060 or do broken people come to witchcraft and i think that it's i think it's both um
00:52:40.300 you break in the tower way yeah yeah definitely it's why we have so much crossover with like
00:52:47.160 the the queer community it's these people that are searching for their power because they feel 0.93
00:52:52.040 less than or broken or helpless and then that's where we all find it right but uh sorry continue
00:52:58.840 you were saying something no that that was my question like can you talk about this intersection
00:53:03.240 between queerness and witchness and and as and then part b of my question i guess is um
00:53:10.840 dealing with your family or people's families as a queer person or as a witch or whatever
00:53:17.340 i'm using air quotes your difference you might bring in you might be bringing to your family
00:53:22.560 um and just how to navigate all of that yeah i that's that's not even a question that was like
00:53:29.160 Write us a manifesto in the next seven minutes.
00:53:36.040 You know, put something to light here that was really interesting is that often people that are broken or seeking some power are attracted to witchcraft.
00:53:46.240 And I think the big part for me in that is when you're a victim to a situation or something happens, it's the sensation of being powerless, right?
00:53:55.540 and that's the sensation that nobody wants to be stuck with because who wants to be powerless
00:54:00.580 um and witchcraft is one of the ways that you can gain control and power over your life and i think
00:54:07.440 that's one of the biggest draws to it and once you realize that that you can apply that type of
00:54:12.400 potential to everything in your life that you yes things can happen that are outside of your control
00:54:17.420 but there's always something you can do you know like when people think of witchcraft whether
00:54:23.480 you're thinking religious witchcraft or secular witchcraft everyone always thinks of like a
00:54:27.560 cauldron and a candle and herbs and uh you know pricking your finger and the whole thing right
00:54:32.000 but let's be real here after a certain point all witches eventually just start banging pots 0.98
00:54:38.180 like get the fuck out negativity you know when you're in your car and you're like gee i really 1.00
00:54:45.960 hope i get a parking space like all you do is wiggle your fingers and you're like witchcraft 0.97
00:54:49.740 I'm good at that one
00:54:51.100 I think we all start with a lot of
00:54:55.800 accoutrements and then we just come down to
00:54:57.860 the ten magic wands
00:54:59.780 that we have attached to our hands
00:55:01.620 exactly
00:55:02.400 that's one of those things where it's like
00:55:05.600 that's the power that you're finding inside of
00:55:07.800 yourself and like
00:55:08.660 the more
00:55:10.940 like you said the accoutrements are very
00:55:13.600 important and then but eventually
00:55:15.860 we start finding that power within
00:55:17.740 ourselves and we can handle
00:55:19.380 the bare bones of you know a last second spell and i think that that's that's a really beautiful
00:55:26.780 part of of that progression in our lives is that eventually we do find that power that we're
00:55:31.440 looking for hopefully yeah um when it comes to family and stuff like that i mean um when i came
00:55:37.940 out i was i was a neo-wiccan at first that's basically i went to catholic school until the
00:55:42.840 sixth grade um i did my confirmation and then uh my godmother who for those that don't understand
00:55:51.560 what a godmother is uh your godmother is basically if your parents die your godparents are the people
00:55:57.400 that are in charge of your spiritual well-being within the church uh so for my confirmation my
00:56:04.040 godmother gave me a book on greek mythology so the day i stood in front of the church and said
00:56:13.760 i believe in the lord god our savior the the catholic the holy catholic church the spirit of
00:56:19.960 all of this she gave me a book on greek mythology so obviously she was off to a good start
00:56:25.580 um and then when i and then i immediately converted to neo wicca that summer um a little
00:56:34.260 while later i i came out to her and basically she looked at me and she was like i'm worried
00:56:39.640 that you're joining a cult and i told her i was like it's like the least culty thing that i could
00:56:46.780 be doing because there's no central power i can't give money to anybody i don't know i don't know
00:56:51.160 anyone so we're safe and that's bang on yeah right um and that's basically all i like ever
00:57:00.220 since then i've just decided like i don't have to tell anybody um none of my family is involved in
00:57:06.040 my spiritual life they never were uh even when i was you know uh catholic they they weren't really
00:57:13.540 involved in my inside spiritual life and so they don't necessarily know what i get up to
00:57:20.280 so I'm blessed that I have a family that like knows about my otherness and anytime I tell them
00:57:25.680 anything they're kind of like oh well yeah I tell them that I'm moving to Montreal I tell them that
00:57:33.000 you know I'm I'm gonna get married to a guy I tell them that I who like I can say that I'm I'm
00:57:39.020 a Dionysian I can say I'm a witch I can say I do this that and the other thing I'm doing drag and
00:57:43.900 basically everyone just kind of goes like stop trying to one-up yourself
00:57:46.840 yeah i think both of us are very blessed that we have very um accepting families that are very
00:57:56.020 open and and very close to us right like we were both very lucky to have that type of family
00:58:00.980 dynamic um that being said we touched really briefly on the aspect of chosen family and i
00:58:06.320 think that's a very important part of our lives too as queer people and often even as witches
00:58:10.200 it's surrounding yourself with people that you connect with and and making bonds that are
00:58:15.360 important right and that's what family is about it's being there for each other through the good
00:58:19.540 times and the bad times and i think having that network can really be a lifesaver and i know that
00:58:26.260 that's also again part of why community is so important to us is that selma and i we do recognize
00:58:31.680 that we have a lot of privileges in our lives and whether it's it's you know uh financial or
00:58:37.640 familial or you know any kind of privilege we have a lot of them yeah and so that means that
00:58:43.440 we've got a lot of spoons, we've got a lot of spoons to spare. And so that's why we've always
00:58:49.780 tried to make a space for people that need family. We know that ours will support us. And so we're
00:58:55.500 out here trying to support people that need it. That's one of the big reasons why we've had such
00:59:00.580 a commitment to this aspect of building community and recognizing our community. But not just saying
00:59:05.780 like our community in the broad sense, but like really stopping and getting to know some of these
00:59:09.420 people like i know when a particular member of our community has had a concussion and because
00:59:16.060 she gets a lot of them and i know the story behind all of them and like i know when someone's having
00:59:21.280 a hard time with their family and so we're there for them and that's part of the reason is because
00:59:25.020 we have such a great family background that we want to we want to share that with people and i
00:59:29.980 mean people people feel i think i think that connection that we want to have is real because
00:59:34.780 we have people constantly messaging us talking to us and we have that relationship with yes their
00:59:39.000 audience members but they are our extended family you know if someone writes me say hey the thing
00:59:43.780 that happened in your show made me really uncomfortable i'll take the time to listen
00:59:46.940 to them and understand and have a conversation with them about it because i'm not just putting
00:59:51.120 on a show for my own pleasure i'm there it's supposed to be there for everybody and you know
00:59:55.820 talking about uh witchcraft and everything i mean i think everybody that knows me and especially
01:00:00.760 uma can attest to this i'm very much your guardian archetype i'm the protector the guardian the
01:00:07.600 justice seeker the aquarium yeah i think that's something i try to really project in in coven
01:00:15.580 that's like you know i'm the main host and that's something i want to project to people is that
01:00:18.680 you're safe here you know and you always make sure to bring up that message at the start of
01:00:26.400 i mean all the covens that i've been to it's like a call to arms you know yeah not hugging arms but
01:00:32.780 A call to arms, nonetheless, against capitalism, against the patriarchy specifically.
01:00:38.960 Why do you feel like that's so important to start your shows with this empowerment, political empowerment?
01:00:46.480 Honestly, because I think that's one of the things that makes us feel the most like victims right now.
01:00:51.880 It sucks all the energy out of all of us.
01:00:54.180 The need to be productive, the need to make money, the need to be part of this capitalist system to survive.
01:01:00.180 and let's be real here the world is on fire right now when you look around us and that sense of
01:01:06.160 helplessness is just exhausting but knowing that we're there for each other and we're fighting
01:01:11.380 alongside each other can be really uplifting and knowing that someone else gets it and you don't
01:01:15.640 have to explain why you're depressed why you don't want to get out of bed like going to your
01:01:19.600 nine-to-five job is a nightmare even if you love it or it pays well you don't need to explain that
01:01:24.800 I get it you're in a system that sucks the life out of you and you know what yeah we have to
01:01:28.960 operate within it now but doesn't mean that we can't be there for each other and keep fighting
01:01:32.860 it beautifully said do you have any special longest night of the year messages for our
01:01:40.960 listeners before i get i let you get back to your busy busy lives um i mean i think it's just kind
01:01:48.960 of like that classic imagery of like there there's light coming you know you might you might be facing
01:01:54.780 the wrong way in the darkness you don't see where the light is coming from you might not see it
01:01:59.560 because it's just starting to grow you might not see it because there's an obstacle in the way but
01:02:04.520 the light is there and you know we're in for the long night but you know we're gonna we're gonna
01:02:11.020 dance we're gonna dance until dawn baby that's what we're here for i love that thank you so much
01:02:19.820 Happy Yule. I'm going to throw now to my conversation with Monifa Walker, who's going to give us some astrological tips going into the new year. But thank you so much to the gods. 01:03:28.140 we'll get into why you named yourselves the gods but we'll save that one for next time thank you
01:03:34.380 so much and Merry Yule to you both. To you as well. Merry Yule Monifa. Thank you. Merry Yule.
01:03:46.440 So some of our listeners might recognize you because you were on our Beltane Music Witches
01:03:51.520 special earlier this year and you're here today to give us some astrology tips and tricks for the
01:03:59.100 new year but before we deep dive into all that can you tell us about the musical composition
01:04:04.420 project that you're working on that's related to all this it's 12 preludes of the zodiac that's
01:04:10.020 not going to be the album title by the way but it is it is essentially uh 12 short preludes for
01:04:15.720 each zodiac sign and then there's going to be some additional tracks at the end from um other
01:04:20.320 classical composers and two will be from more uh modern day artists like 21st century artists so
01:04:27.420 It's like a piano cover of a couple of songs, but yeah.
01:04:30.660 That's going to be awesome.
01:04:31.820 I'm super excited.
01:04:32.640 So we'll put the link to your Kickstarter on our socials and in the show notes for this.
01:04:37.620 I'm super excited.
01:04:38.760 I hope you get tons of money for this.
01:04:40.300 I'm excited to hear.
01:04:41.360 I'll definitely send you, I'll definitely mail you a copy next year when it's finished.
01:04:46.160 Thank you.
01:04:47.360 So your astrology business proper is called Sekhmet's Visions.
01:04:51.500 can you talk a little bit about why you chose that name for people who didn't hear you on our
01:04:56.880 other episode uh but yeah various reasons actually uh the understanding has got deeper
01:05:02.920 since we've last spoken and one is definitely um in Egyptian astrology my birth my birth date
01:05:10.280 actually goes forth under the goddess Sekhmet so she rules my actual um time of birth date of birth
01:05:18.220 and also various dreams that I had.
01:05:22.200 I don't know if anyone, if they have or haven't,
01:05:24.900 more actors, older, more ancient,
01:05:28.080 clone-like deities and gods and spirits and teletarkes,
01:05:32.060 but they tend to visit you more in your dreams
01:05:35.520 and visualisations first as a way of introducing yourself.
01:05:39.700 All beings from other realms do that,
01:05:42.880 but especially the older ones.
01:05:44.160 that's their their way of kind of making a declaration they want to uh cultivate a
01:05:50.700 relationship with you and that's what happened with me last year in January just kept getting
01:05:54.860 these these dreams and I was like okay I'm listening and then it is interesting even after
01:06:01.120 changing my business name there is still a few things I had to integrate about the energy itself
01:06:06.440 so I had some very interesting experiences um but yeah it's helped me to grow really fast a lot
01:06:13.800 much quicker and it's also something that I now integrate in my one-on-one work when I do
01:06:21.320 like spiritual coaching and shadow integration with people so yeah it's definitely expanded in
01:06:27.820 less than a year and the goddess Sekhmet has been a big part of that because she's all about
01:06:33.480 drive and courage and a deep deep healing and it's like I can't there's no point me
01:06:39.860 offering to help others to heal themselves if I'm not doing that work first so it's all falling
01:06:45.780 synchronistically in place anyway yeah yeah and you mentioned a lot of these messages came in
01:06:53.140 dreams and you did you mentioned shadow integration so since we're at Yuletide which is this dark
01:06:59.560 dark time of the year um let's talk a bit about not demonizing the dark um because you said dreams
01:07:07.700 Like dreams are obviously, I'm using air quotes here, but a dark place.
01:07:12.940 But they're also a very creative space, same with, you know, the womb or planting a seed underground.
01:07:18.740 Like a lot of creation takes place in these very dark spaces.
01:07:24.000 So can you get into your perception of shadow work just a little bit?
01:07:30.220 The first thing that I'd say is that creativity is related to divine feminine.
01:07:35.160 so already um there's been like this unconscious conditioning that to be to be fear of darkness to
01:07:42.960 be fear of creativity is to be fear of the um divine feminine within you or also known as the
01:07:49.700 animal as people like Carl Jung used to describe it as and um in my experience the more you're
01:07:59.760 focusing on just being good and just being positive and just being righteous and what I
01:08:07.340 like to claim when somebody doth protest too much about those things what I actually observe happens
01:08:12.900 and even in some experiences in my past is that you start experiencing things in your life that
01:08:20.240 your conscious self really didn't want to experience because you've switched off to
01:08:26.200 your unconscious and what happens is when you're switched off to your unconscious it kind of allows
01:08:32.480 anything to happen now right because you're not governing it you're not checking it out you're
01:08:36.600 not uh checking in to listen to it to integrate it so it starts acting out in more erratic ways
01:08:42.540 to get your attention usually in situations with people or happenings and a lot of the time you'll
01:08:48.640 be like why is this happening i don't get it and it's a way of your unconscious trying to get your
01:08:53.040 your attention another way of trying to explain it um I don't know if anyone saw the film by
01:08:58.960 Jordan Peele us but that's a really good I did yeah that's a great way of explaining um
01:09:05.960 shadow integration because if all the people above ground choose to acknowledge that darker
01:09:12.920 part of them that's still made up a part of who they are not just who they are entirely
01:09:17.520 um would they have acted out in such a horrific and violent way my guess is no and that's what
01:09:25.220 our shadow does a lot of the time um for instance you could be somebody that says continuously
01:09:30.420 i really don't enjoy drama i don't enjoy conflict i don't know why i keep attracting it it's so
01:09:35.680 annoying and then you keep falling into situations where you're continuously having conflict with
01:09:41.300 people and having arguments with people until you really dig into that darker part of yourself that
01:09:47.920 you've ignored that you've denied for so long that you um until you kind of make friends with it and
01:09:54.960 come to an agreement with it and this is something that it again shows up in the dream space as well
01:09:59.620 when this integration occurs you actually have different dreams where you realize that your
01:10:04.960 light and dark can actually agree not having to do the same thing and when this happens
01:10:09.700 it's really interesting you don't you tend to co-create less of those experiences not to say
01:10:16.500 you don't have conflicts and you don't have situations that will still irritate you but
01:10:21.700 you're not repeating the same patterns you're evolving and as you're evolving obviously the
01:10:27.440 tests get harder but um shadow integration is something that's definitely uh it's a very deep
01:10:35.540 and transformative medicine and it goes back to sex met as well if you're going to heal
01:10:39.740 it makes sense to heal from the inside out rather than pointing at things externally
01:10:45.640 to solve all of your problems for you and this is why i call you the astronomical psychologist
01:10:52.740 because you really you take the stars and you take their patterns but you really put them into
01:10:58.860 like our human lives and our psyches absolutely but it's like astronomy is i always say astronomy
01:11:06.660 is just the study of the planets themselves and astrology is the behavior of those planets and
01:11:13.020 how they affect everything including earth beings us and um something that i do actually do now when
01:11:19.960 i work with people one-on-one which many um those two people have done in the past including car
01:11:26.020 young is actually check their birth chart and actually see where they have um the most fears
01:11:31.620 where they have the most blocks the most challenges but also as well where they have um the most uh
01:11:38.660 shadow placements like their black moon lilith like their psyche um even their vertex because
01:11:45.080 their position in the chart actually determine where they can get the biggest breakthrough
01:11:50.040 through if they choose to be brave and invest in themselves and dive deep into actually getting to
01:11:57.960 you know know who they are possibly for the first time in their life because we've talked to only
01:12:02.760 acknowledge a half of ourselves or part of ourselves and when we integrate our shadow
01:12:07.460 we're actually getting to know our whole selves and that can be startling at first naturally of
01:12:12.240 course but then you get very very comfortable and then you realize that it wasn't actually you that
01:12:16.920 was fearing that you was acting on the fear of others around you if you were to have complete
01:12:24.760 approval for your whole self. I, and I'm going to guess some of our listeners too, I find,
01:12:31.220 and maybe it's the math, maybe it's the complexity, but I'm super interested in astrology,
01:12:36.280 but I find it very intimidating. So for me and for our listeners who are on the same
01:12:41.560 page as me what's like a good entry point to start learning about astrology in a more
01:12:49.060 defined way i mean i don't know um yeah that's been so complex that there isn't even a simple
01:12:58.360 place to start well i was about to say that i mean i'm personally i'm very um good with maths
01:13:03.920 and maybe i've taken that for granted um so i've always understood it and also there's there's so
01:13:09.940 many connections between astrology and numerology as well but that's for a different conversation
01:13:14.760 a different episode we'll have you back again thank you if anyone is i mean i have done many
01:13:23.940 readings for people where they've had absolutely no previous knowledge to astrology they had no
01:13:29.540 clue about their chart they only knew what their sun sign was and i do do those readings in a
01:13:35.260 different way where I do break it down but essentially you know if even getting to know
01:13:41.660 the personal planets is too much for somebody I'll just say get to know the three basics or
01:13:46.460 the foundations which is your ascendant your sun and your moon if you really want to understand
01:13:51.200 how you behave how you think who you are on a day-to-day basis and you can do that without
01:13:58.200 having to look at all the other houses and all other planets but I will warn you that if you
01:14:03.360 are somebody that gets into astrology or likes astrology which again is shown in your chart
01:14:08.600 you will start to eventually find your own way of digging into that whether it's hiring somebody
01:14:13.820 or investing in courses or investing in books but yeah for people that just look at a chart
01:14:20.640 and just get nothing but confusion I would just recommend just look at the the main the foundation
01:14:27.380 the ascendant the sun and the moon sign because they're the three most important from
01:14:33.020 the moment of birth so ascendant sun moon yes okay i got it so now whether we're on this oh go ahead
01:14:42.580 now i'm just going to say the moon is going to be more connected to your unconscious your
01:14:48.140 subconscious your emotional health the sun is going to be more connected to your ego your
01:14:52.480 confidence and that masculine energy the moon is more feminine energy and your ascending is
01:14:57.980 more about your physical body and the first impression that you give people so if you're
01:15:03.320 one of those people that continuously get told oh when we met you we thought you were like this
01:15:07.680 and now we realize you're like this chances are your ascendant is different from your sun and
01:15:11.960 moon sign that's so useful thank you so much that is an excellent jumping off point for me I feel
01:15:19.360 less intimidated already so um what uh what can you tell us about the stars for 2020 for the new
01:15:27.760 year what should our listeners be prepared for um there's two main uh two main dates i'm going to
01:15:36.120 talk about obviously we all know that jupiter is ingress capricorn which is going to be very
01:15:41.200 interesting because it now joins that capricorn stellium and there's going to be um obviously
01:15:47.520 there's going to be expansion in capricorn things and that one of the main things that capricorn
01:15:51.620 rules is institutions like the government like the police um even institutions that are higher
01:15:59.040 than that so every country on this planet is going to be experiencing a razor focus on this area but
01:16:06.240 also they're going to see there's going to be a lot of judgment and a lot of scrutiny and out of
01:16:10.900 that judgment and scrutiny is going to become a lot of it's going to come a lot of changes
01:16:15.700 and that's with the Pluto and Saturn still playing its part in there now March 21st Saturn
01:16:22.500 officially ingresses Aquarius now for many of us out there in their late 20s um including myself
01:16:30.660 this is the actual activation of the our Saturn return for anyone that has a Saturn in Aquarius
01:16:37.040 and it's very very very interesting Saturn is naturally one of the rulers of Aquarius
01:16:43.100 or the ruler if you're talking about traditional astrology and aquarius is about connection and
01:16:50.460 it's about a long-term vision you know having what you have you know high hopes friends but
01:16:57.720 it's also about freedom and saturn is about longevity it's about long-term you know visible
01:17:03.120 results public image and aquarius is about publicity so what we're all going to be activating
01:17:09.180 in our lives is how can we all seek a healthier way a better way of achieving freedom on an
01:17:20.060 intellectual level on a spiritual level on all levels and how can we maintain that on a long
01:17:26.000 term basis and this is something that's going to continue on for the rest of this century for the
01:17:32.700 next century because uh we are edging that ever so closer to the edge of the age of aquarius sorry
01:17:39.320 i was gonna ask about that there's a theory that um we are entering a new dawn so uh a lot of us
01:17:49.200 feel a bit helpless and a bit like just freaked in the face of what's going on in the world right
01:17:55.420 now but astrologically can you tell us about this new dawn that is approaching it's happening now
01:18:02.180 It's something that I actually wrote about in an article that was shared in Rich magazine.
01:18:07.120 We're still currently in the age of Pisces, so we're still at a point of disillusion,
01:18:11.500 but we are going into the age of Aquarius.
01:18:14.320 And actually the planet that's going to really display a visible shift towards that is Jupiter.
01:18:24.640 And Jupiter is one of the social planets.
01:18:26.400 And Jupiter will go retrograde on May the 14th and will be direct again on September the 12th.
01:18:36.880 And then towards the end of 2020, it's then going to enter Aquarius.
01:18:42.100 And this is going to be a phenomenal moment for us all.
01:18:46.120 You think about the things that Jupiter rules, like education, like justice, the higher self, how we think, our belief systems, even how we travel.
01:18:55.840 this is all going to have a massive shift and we're all going to witness and experience it
01:19:01.600 by 2020 most of us are going to be feeling it by March especially those of us that are going to be
01:19:06.840 activating their Saturn return in Aquarius but for everybody globally they won't be able to ignore it
01:19:12.940 when Jupiter goes into Aquarius because that's going to mark the first shift into how we think
01:19:20.640 And once Uranus goes into Gemini in, you know, five, six years time, Pluto will be in Aquarius by then as well. So we're going to actually see a massive paradigm shift in consciousness within the next 10 years, which is very, very interesting.
01:19:36.720 and you know uh there are a lot of things that we do need to address and we do need to change now
01:19:42.200 but am I one of those people that thinks that we have you know less than 10 years I actually don't
01:19:49.040 but again that's another conversation for another day
01:19:52.360 you're hopeful you are hopeful well you know that is the nature that's one of the uh natures of
01:20:02.700 Aquarius to have high hopes and wishes but yeah I am very hopeful but not only that um my soul is
01:20:10.460 knowledgeable and so is everybody else's and once we tap into that and we align with that
01:20:15.300 a lot of fears that we've been conditioned with that we've had hardwired into our brains for years
01:20:22.340 we will start to release and that's all I'll say about freaking out any of your listeners but yeah
01:20:27.840 let's let's have this as our mantra then you said my soul is knowledgeable yes listeners let's all
01:20:37.260 say that together right now my soul is knowledgeable so return to that if you get freaked out like i do
01:20:44.460 so okay monifa having a human experience um it'd be very weird if we didn't get freaked out now
01:20:52.720 again especially for me freaked out is sort of my baseline the world is an insane place but it's so
01:21:02.000 beautiful and and so hopeful so um monifa can you give us like just a couple things that we
01:21:09.480 should be focused on headed into the new year as we go into 2020 yes um do you protect the moment
01:21:18.540 is now invisible and he becomes visible again at the end of january and i'll just say uh get
01:21:26.380 prepared for the shifts of the nodes as well that will come around about spring summer time they'll
01:21:31.960 shift into germany sagittarius where they're actually exalted so for everybody um whether
01:21:37.860 you study a shoulder or not or you seek out on a shoulder like myself um if you're in your late
01:21:43.860 20s definitely check out your Saturn return and how best to navigate that because Saturn returns
01:21:49.780 can be a really amazing experience to enjoy if you have the knowledge about how it's going to
01:21:55.420 affect you and also everybody check where Jupiter is both natalie and where it's going to be in your
01:22:03.180 chart where Capricorn is as well because it's going to be a shift in expansion and growth that
01:22:10.060 no one is going to be able to ignore so be prepared or get trampled pretty much yeah
01:22:18.580 you know it's that is the nature of aquarius in capricorn you know what are the structures in
01:22:25.800 place how can i be um independent you know and you combine the two it's like well yeah now the
01:22:31.500 time to um not get not make excuses and point fingers and actually like okay now it's my
01:22:37.260 responsibility what can I do to improve things what can I do to be the good that you seek you
01:22:43.520 know and trust that my soul is knowledgeable exactly thank you so much can you tell us your
