00:00:00.000You aren't being a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch.
00:00:03.140Be a witch. Be a witch. Be a witch. Be a witch. Be a witch. Be a witch. You must be a witch.
00:00:10.540Hi, it's Risa. I wanted to offer a bit of an introduction to this episode because it starts
00:00:17.620even more in the middle of everything than we usually do. This episode was recorded live
00:00:25.180in North Bay in a little studio of the artist Kim Kitchen. I was introduced to Kim the way you get
00:00:34.540handed by person to person when you're looking for friends or witches when you travel and I didn't
00:00:43.340know Kim's work but I fell so in love with her in that house in that moment. Kim is disabled as a
00:00:51.240result of a debilitating and transformative illness. She explores collective cultural
00:00:56.880understandings of the female body, its intersections with and presence within the
00:01:01.080natural world. Her community activism is inclusive, celebratory, exuberant, and has a massive
00:01:08.580visionary spirit. I wish I had audio of this part, but she told me when she was up north,
00:01:16.820She talks about her travels and her work in the North in the episode, but she was working on an art project. She wanted to make molds of people's bodies who had experienced mastectomy.
00:01:33.820and the curator of the gallery space told her I'll circulate the call but I don't think you'll
00:01:45.060find anybody up here they circulated the call and you know something like within 12 hours all
00:01:51.220of the possible spots to make these busts these molds were filled and Kim met woman after woman
00:02:01.340who came forward to share, because at that time when they went looking, there were no
00:02:07.820images available of what your body would look like after a mastectomy.
00:02:13.260And as she told me this, I was sitting there, you know, recovering from the worst of the
00:02:23.560infections that had wracked my body following mastectomy. My breasts sort of weirdly disfigured
00:02:33.600one dark burnt by radiation the other light both crumpled in different ways. Anyway I'm wearing
00:02:41.900this weird body under my clothes against my skin all the time on this trip that's how it felt
00:02:49.580And suddenly Kim, out of the blue, was telling me about all of these women coming to her and letting her make casts to show their versions of these scars to their community.
00:03:04.780And then Kim made, like, lovingly made sculptures of all of their breasts, all the removed breasts, until they filled the floors of the gallery.
00:03:19.080She is truly a witch, and she shares stories in this episode about going on travels to meet the sacred feminine.
00:03:28.080And she invites us to remember ourselves, to claim our space, to feel our rage, to reduce our distractions, and to listen for each other, and to remember there's no such thing as far away.
00:06:53.160I worked at the shelter there, and it was the first time that I worked with men.
00:07:01.500I had no interest to serve men in that capacity.
00:07:05.780However, there wasn't a lot of men offering those services, and the warden had come from the federal prison to our shelter and asked if anybody was willing to provide service to the men in the federal prison.
00:07:22.500So workshops and individual counseling.
00:07:27.480And while I was, you know, in Hay River doing this work, I was meeting women from all over the high Arctic because Hay River was the safe place for them to be, you know, leave their community, taken out of their community when they disclosed and were needing safety, right? And they would come down to Hay River.
00:07:47.900I was already really deep into my pagan practices, the sense of the skill of the art of an empath and not understanding culturally what, you know, what are the tools?
00:08:05.400What does that look like when you step into a completely other culture?
00:08:09.160But listening and having those, they're always visuals for me.
00:18:51.980These vans pick you up at 3 in the morning to go to the temple sites with sunrise.
00:18:57.320Like all these amazing women, Marlene, who is in one of my films recently, a poet, teaches English at the multi-university, has advocated for the temple sites her entire life, supper at their homes and going to the sites with them.
00:19:16.900We were in the hypogeum. We were laying our bodies down in the hypogeum and chanting.
00:19:23.560And there's all these oracles that travel one kind of floor to the other, right?
00:19:28.900So your voices are just channeling through the hypogeum.
00:19:33.560That's where Jennifer came to the decision to apply to record in the hypogeum.
00:21:24.020And then these oracle chambers that are like cylinder round, perfectly round, that go up and up into another chamber on another floor, right?
00:21:34.680When you talk or when you chant, it's like you're right next to that person.
00:25:35.000Yeah, it's about stepping out of the game, like completely out of the game, like seeing it as such, seeing how they rely on that vulnerability and that weakness and that shame and that disgustingness that women feel they carry.
00:25:55.220when you let all that go, the potential, the space, like the space.
00:26:04.440We were like, go with Facebook for a year.
00:28:36.560When I was doing the birthing retreats,
00:28:38.520Part of that was engaging women to be intimate and caring with one another again, washing each other's hair in the rites of menstruation.
00:28:50.360The working out, ritualizing and creating ceremony around the shame, the shame of abortions and the loss and the grief, the shame of losing breasts, wombs.
00:29:06.920Like, the shame that has just piled up, right?
00:30:28.620Yes. You have no idea what is on the other side of that door, but it's going to be juicy. It's something you can't know until you've done it a couple of times. Been the one to close the door, been the one to end the thing.
00:30:43.180Women have been crying in their closets for God knows how many generations.
00:30:48.160And not to say that's just fear or conditioning.
00:30:52.720It is the most dangerous moment in an abusive relationship to leave.
00:37:54.240I'm Risa, voices you may have heard on the Missing Witches podcast.
00:37:57.460we've been producing a podcast that was really our project labor of love kind of a love letter
00:38:04.440between us two old hag baby witch friends in Montreal but we went looking for stories we
00:38:12.480really were coming from a place of longing and missing we were looking for a feminist history
00:38:17.240of magic and that became a huge many year life mission and somewhere along the way
00:38:27.300we started our own coven. We're just a couple of besties who 20 years ago started making music
00:38:35.840together and then making magic together and then making a podcast together and then making books
00:38:41.300together and making all of the things and we want to invite you to come into this creative
00:38:47.040cauldron of energy. It's sort of like our own social media for feminist witches. Welcome to
00:38:54.260the coven. I'm Zoe Flowers. It is a place of, I would say, mutual understanding, mutual learning.
00:39:02.100We teach each other. We learn from each other. We do magic for each other.
00:39:09.500Light candles for each other. Encourage each other. Share stories. Create stories.
00:39:17.120Hi, I'm Reed. I am a member of the Missing Witches Coven. I have been since 2023. I'm an ex-evangelical, an ex-fundee, and so after leaving church, I really, really longed for community and ritual, and I have found both of those things here.
00:39:36.660I am a member of the Missing Witches Coven. I joined because the podcast lowers my cortisol
00:39:44.020levels. It's validating, it's affirming, and it's nurturing. Hi, welcome to the Missing Witches
00:39:51.600Coven. What you can expect in joining is one of the most collaborative, creative, and heart-filled
00:39:58.800communities that I've ever seen. I love that my activism is welcome here. We are justice-loving,
00:40:07.640anti-ableist, pro-queer, anti-racist, pro-trans, did I say queer? Queer as hell. Group of people.
00:40:16.220I wanted to join a digital coven so that I could easily come and go as I please
00:40:21.600without feeling like I have to do something regardless of my comfort level. This is not
00:40:28.700the coven that's going to force you to do any of that. This is the longest community I've ever been
00:40:33.840a part of, which says something. I hope that you'll find it as supportive and loving and kind
00:40:41.600as I have. I have learned stuff here. I've been able to share my knowledge with people here.
00:40:49.100Do you like music? Do you like witchy shit? Do you like history? Do you like meditation? Do you
00:40:58.280like art? Do you like queer spaces? Do you like trans spaces? It's a place where we gather around
00:41:06.400music in our meetings. There's usually some sort of song, some sort of instrumentation.
00:41:13.420We also have the Hive where we get online and one Coven member creates a playlist for that month.
00:41:21.360And the conversations that you're going to be able to take part in.
