00:01:34.900 so I'll let you two introduce yourselves
00:01:37.700 Hi Risa, Risa can you say hi to the Coven?

00:02:17.460 excited to join us and feel yourselves in your body shake your shoulders shake your asses a 0.79
00:02:22.260 little bit because we get into this for Lisa so let's start with uh Tanya Tanya can you start by 0.92
00:02:28.380 introducing yourself and maybe a little bit about the project and then Skye can fill in the gaps for
00:02:33.140 us sure I just got like a surge of like emotions of about like just like from like joy like for
00:02:39.780 what you were just saying um to be living in this moment now especially in this project is is really
00:02:45.840 beautiful to be experiencing so thank you for having us uh on this podcast so my name is Tanya
00:02:53.760 my pronouns are she are and her uh or they now I am the president of Earthbound Futures now that it
00:03:03.540 is a non-profit organization and what I bring to the project is mainly it started as being the
00:03:13.440 driving force the motor and bringing in the platform of wrestling and storytelling and
00:03:22.840 performance bringing community together it will trying to understanding learning about it and
00:03:28.780 implementing it as much as i could through the medium of uh wrestling and storytelling yeah
00:03:35.160 tanya i also felt this surge of my heart is beating with excitement and like feeling very
00:03:41.740 honored by that introduction thank you um i'm really happy to be here my name is sky uh these 0.78
00:03:50.420 days pronouns i'm feeling they them but just kind of feel like fuck gender in general you know it
00:03:57.920 can switch around but these days it's the they them that I'm going with. I am tuning in from 0.91
00:04:03.940 the west coast of so-called Canada on a small island in unceded coast Salish territory and
00:04:12.440 I have been collaborating and working with Tanya for I was talking about it just before how many 0.63
00:04:20.140 years we've sort of been creating art and doing weird wild queer stuff together for probably seven
00:04:27.580 eight years and earthbound started i guess about six years ago yeah it began as a a collective of
00:04:35.640 of artists who we were all sort of queer performance artists that wanted to explore
00:04:41.740 how wrestling could be a medium for storytelling right and we really wanted to bring in theater
00:04:48.860 queer sort of identity and politics into the ring right and we all felt that there was this really 0.75
00:04:56.100 powerful thing about seeing like non you know heteronormative storylines being played out in 0.80
00:05:05.700 the ring different kinds of bodies fems you know queers taking up space in the ring especially I 1.00
00:05:14.080 mean Tanya comes from you know the wrestling world a lot more than I do so maybe she can speak more 0.99
00:05:19.240 to this but you know really reclaiming that space because so much of mainstream wrestling
00:05:23.520 is about sort of yeah heteronormative storytelling really macho sort of simplistic storylines you
00:05:32.700 know there's a lot of homophobia you know any sort of representation of femmes and women is
00:05:39.020 sort of in a very specific male gazy kind of way and we really wanted to reclaim that and just
00:05:46.500 explore what it means to tell stories in the ring and and I think something that's really 0.75
00:05:52.980 powerful too that we brought in that's unique is the sci-fi aspect so taking sort of a queer 0.68
00:05:59.220 futures imagination taking it to the max of like where can we go with storytelling we we've been 0.65
00:06:07.340 using wrestling more as like a metaphor you know like a powerful tool to be able to explore what
00:06:14.480 it means to get angry what it means what to to to cope with conflict or be or be confronted with
00:06:22.520 conflicts how do you deal with that i feel like there's missing outlets and explorations and like
00:06:28.860 more therapeutic way i feel like well you know in ways competitive sports helps with that right
00:06:35.120 because it's it is an outlet to like blow out steam but the only thing for me what the that i
00:06:39.660 that i found problematic in all this is is the competition aspect right if we so with earthbound
00:06:48.600 what we try to do in the stories we try to reconstruct the art of fighting uh bring in
00:06:54.720 conflict resolution trying to eliminate competition in the wrestling is a really tricky thing in the
00:06:59.840 first place because it's all the foundations of wrestling is about competition something that i've
00:07:05.520 made peace with over the years is like as a wrestler because i started i'm the one who brought
00:07:10.680 wrestling as like i knew that wrestling was such a powerful platform that we can explore
00:07:15.660 as like a tool of storytelling um but and it never fit in in the normal wrestling world it just it
00:07:23.480 didn't work out like people from the scene would just literally tell me i'm not a wrestler even
00:07:29.000 though you know uh we earthbound has a ring i lived in in a wrestling venue where we were able
00:07:35.480 to like produce shows and all these things so one thing that i like that i decided to let go
00:07:42.280 is like saying that earthbound is wrestling and it's it's it's it's actually kind of like a hybrid
00:07:51.180 form um of physical theater yeah it's kind of like you know a little bit mirroring on like
00:07:59.520 how you try to get your peers's approval you know of like trying to fit in like either like family
00:08:05.300 or school systems or anything whenever something's so different um and then I realized that like I
00:08:11.580 I was just kind of hitting a wall over and over again,
00:08:16.400 trying to fit in and something that just wasn't welcoming me.
00:08:19.940 And now I'm at peace to just, sure, we're not wrestling.
00:08:26.480 We're not part of those old foundations
00:08:27.960 because we literally shattered those old foundations
00:08:30.820 with our values that we carry forth.
00:08:34.980 No, you changed the name, which I think is so powerful, right? 0.99
00:08:37.940 You kept doing exactly what the fuck you wanted to do. 0.97
00:08:40.020 you just were like okay you don't want me to call it that I gotta call it this new magical thing 0.99
00:08:44.200 and I think something too that's that's unique about our approach is is the way that we
00:08:51.280 um develop our characters and the storylines you know they really come from a deep place of
00:09:00.500 of sort of experimentation self-exploration and and and looking within to to develop these
00:09:06.820 characters that are like I mentioned before sort of extreme sci-fi futurist characters right that
00:09:15.300 sort of defy normative boundaries and narratives right and and through this process something
00:09:21.280 that's really important about the earthbound approach is that we have the power to control
00:09:27.240 the narrative right about what stories we want to tell which is I think a bit different from
00:09:32.440 sort of mainstream wrestling is as I understand it right oh definitely because it's like mainstream
00:09:38.040 wrestling you know you you have your gimmick and you're either a face or a heel you know a baby
00:09:43.600 face or a heel it's like good or evil and with earthbound what actually what it streams from is
00:09:49.440 actually inner mythologies so it's either playing with your higher self or your shadow self or like
00:09:57.120 your alter egos and and it brings a complexity and a whole cosmology to your character so it's
00:10:04.960 it's really there is no limit as far as how as far as you can go and how far you want to develop
00:10:11.480 your character we're not boxed in whatsoever can I ask about that like um I love I love reading
00:10:17.880 about the workshops that you do helping people and helping yourselves find this sort of personal
00:10:24.480 mythology that you could build and maybe you take it into the ring or maybe you take it into your
00:10:29.080 life and it's a way of like radically reimagining the future and imagining our lives I want to come
00:10:35.680 back to an idea of the body like we have these variously you know in pain leaky chronic pain
00:10:44.540 you know broken powerful bodies can you talk about and wrestling is so embodied that's what's
00:10:52.260 so cool that you've embraced this as your art form can you talk about connecting the body to
00:10:57.840 to a hero journey or or to an epic sense of self or to a mythic self sure I could I could start but
00:11:05.180 we definitely have we both have things to say about this I'm sure yeah so wow what a heartbreaking
00:11:13.720 journey really because my body is not the same as it was as my the beginning of my of my wrestling
00:11:21.540 career right now i'm still healing like from chronic things of like you know sciatica and
00:11:28.420 plantar fasciitis which is like a foot condition like foot condition of like muscle tension uh
00:11:35.120 which affects like uh my efficiency and like my physicality right and um i literally have to take
00:11:42.100 breaks from wrestling and go into deep resting states which like really plays with like my value
00:11:49.380 as a person who identifies as a wrestler.
00:11:53.700 But I feel within cycles,
00:11:56.080 if you don't actually take the time
00:11:58.460 and literally take the sacrifice of rest,
00:12:00.720 because I feel like a lot of us
00:12:02.000 feel like resting is a sacrifice
00:12:03.800 because we have to stop everything, right?
00:12:05.800 But it's actually, I feel, is so powerful
00:12:09.320 and there's something really radical about rest
00:12:12.860 that needs to be integrated in every process.
00:12:16.040 And especially, you know, even with wrestling and right now you kind of have no choice but to to to stop sometimes and not push yourself too much, because if you do, then your body is so pushed to its limit that you can't actually wrestle again, depending on what level you want to you want to go, how far you want to push your body.
00:12:41.700 So but I feel with Earthbound, though, like we want to adapt to practice and we really want to have the safe container that wherever you are at physically is OK.
00:12:54.820 And we can explore physicality and a form of physical theater that will engage with whatever state you are physically.
00:13:03.020 and that's the beauty of like having more of like a storytelling aspect to the wrestling
00:13:09.340 because then it's like it can be anything no matter how you're feeling um and it could welcome
00:13:16.000 that it's definitely I do feel torn sometimes and confused uh because I of of trying to match my
00:13:24.160 energetic vitality that like kind of is like stored within me and then not matching up my
00:13:31.120 physical body so it's a lot of learning a lot of accepting a lot of patience and and just
00:13:40.540 accepting the form or how my body is is is is acting in at every present moment i think it's
00:13:49.880 like is the biggest lesson in all this i feel like you're also living out a kind of radical
00:13:59.300 form of body acceptance right now yes uh definitely right now with like you know the
00:14:08.820 earthbound projects it's been a couple of years now that we've been kind of underground and
00:14:14.340 growing roots and that and that's been in more in a resting state but in ways also it's been
00:14:19.220 able to uh hold and encompass this this new decision that i've been taking it's like
00:14:26.480 um letting my facial hair grow which takes an immense an immense energy out of me more
00:14:34.880 I underestimate it sometimes because I'm like why am I so tired why am I like what what like
00:14:42.080 what is going on like I wish I had more drive I wish I had but then I'm like wait wait wait
00:14:47.260 whoa whoa slow down slow down first of all it's okay to slow down
00:14:53.020 and and kind of just view what's going on like energetically what i'm putting out there and like
00:15:00.600 what other muscles am i am i am i working and that is definitely the self-love and
00:15:05.940 self-acceptance muscle which takes takes a lot of energy uh just as much as like physical like
00:15:12.520 extreme workout you know uh energy um kind of breaking society's beauty standards and also
00:15:21.840 building that courage to just even step outside is a lot. It's been almost two years now that I
00:15:30.280 decided to let my beard grow as a cisgendered woman. I'm finally starting to feel like I have
00:15:39.760 more of an energetic reserve to put it back to my wrestling body, but I'm just starting.
00:15:49.120 And then I feel like life is like opening up these opportunities now that I can actually be more physical and push myself in other areas that I haven't in a while.
00:16:00.760 But still, I still need to harness that lesson of not pushing my limits and also like feeling balanced in everything I do, like especially like nutrition, hydration, rest, all of that.
00:16:16.680 i have to now really kind of weave that through my new physical physical body um direction or i
00:16:28.000 will not be able to sustain myself um coming forth uh in this new evolved earthbound direction
00:16:35.420 um it's intimidating but it's necessary and it's super exciting
00:16:41.560 it's it's interesting to me because i feel like within wrestling and without and outside of
00:16:50.120 wrestling tanya that so much of your work um however it's manifesting whether it's um tattooing
00:16:56.840 which you do or those like um sculptures that you were making of like proud round bellies
00:17:03.840 so i can can you maybe get into like why you have such like a corporeal
00:17:11.620 focus um my moon is in taurus
00:17:15.760 okay yeah um i mean uh why do i have i mean it's just kind of how i express myself is very in the
00:17:31.960 physical realm um and it's how it's it's the i mean i'm also also very i have a lot of planets
00:17:42.680 in the third like third house as well like communication is really important to me too so
00:17:46.880 i feel like i have lots of tentacles in many areas um but definitely main main areas are
00:17:56.260 like body work or uh pottery and tattooing um it's it's quite the question why i'm like oh why
00:18:05.840 um i feel like i have to sit that one out well okay so maybe maybe we can ask maybe we can ask
00:18:15.580 sky sky yeah yeah let's let's let's let's go and visit sky yeah speaking yeah i want to come back
00:18:22.240 to Sky and the question that I was asking I mean I want to I want to take up that question Amy's
00:18:27.620 question is so good about like why the body work but also if you can connect that to to the question
00:18:32.940 we were starting with you know how do you connect your body to to an epic sense of self or a mythic
00:18:39.360 sense of self like how does that happen for you and your body yeah I mean that's a huge question
00:18:45.540 I love it there's so much to unpack and explore there similar but also different to Tanya about
00:18:54.100 three years ago I became very very ill I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and later
00:19:03.300 was diagnosed with Lyme disease and within sort of like day or night I was one day able to walk
00:19:13.020 around and do stuff and hold a job. And then the next day I was in bed in chronic pain, unable to
00:19:19.820 cook, unable to take a shower, unable to do anything. I mean, except lie in bed and cry.
00:19:25.280 And it was, it was an incredibly quick and painful transition because, and I'm still,
00:19:33.600 so I'm right now lying in bed. This is where I still spend most of my days. Um, right now it's
00:19:40.980 been three years. So my symptoms are starting to get a little more manageable. I'm a little
00:19:45.500 bit more able to, to, to start thinking about, okay, how can I live with a chronic illness? How
00:19:52.840 can I, you know, uh, live well and, and, and express myself and engage in the world while 0.93
00:20:00.660 still feeling like crap every day? Like, you know, the symptoms that I have are pretty intense brain 0.56
00:20:07.560 fog some days, you know, where like cognitively I can't even put sentences together. You know,
00:20:14.460 I'll lose my train of thought. Oftentimes the pain is so intense that, you know, I can't get
00:20:21.920 out of bed. I lose my balance. I mean, for quite a while I had to use a wheelchair and a cane. I
00:20:30.120 still use a cane to this day. And so this is a very drastic change from like, I mean, if you go
00:20:36.000 to our website or anybody who knows earthbound I mean you know three years ago I was you know 0.99
00:20:41.900 doing you know major wrestling moves with the cisgender guys and giving them the smackdown you 0.97
00:20:47.640 know what I mean and and and dancing on poles I was a stripper for a long time doing aerial silks 0.95
00:20:53.760 like I was super active and my body was the main way that I expressed myself right in this world
00:20:59.100 this was the way creatively I expressed myself sexually I expressed myself it was my way of
00:21:04.660 moving and living and breathing in this world was through my body. And the way, all the ways that I
00:21:10.180 knew to be in this world were basically taken away from me, like in a day, you know? And so I'm at a
00:21:18.560 point right now where I'm also starting to reimagine, like, how can I be, you know, I've
00:21:23.600 been doing a lot of behind the scenes work in Earthbound, getting the non-profit up, getting
00:21:29.360 this grant together, you know, but I mean, I'm, I'm also thinking about ways that I can get back
00:21:35.020 up on stage. What does that look like? Like, how does someone wrestle with a cane? You know what
00:21:40.940 I mean? When I can't be going and doing back bumps anymore, like that's just physically not
00:21:45.340 a possibility for me. And so this is something that's really interesting because Earthbound
00:21:49.400 has kind of always had this like, Ooh, you know, like, let's think about ableism and how it exists
00:21:55.200 in in in the wrestling world and how it exists in our creative projects and how we can kind of
00:22:00.020 start opening up spaces where ableism you know to to counter the ableism but but but it's a
00:22:06.520 challenge you know and and so that's something that i'm really curious and keen to explore
00:22:11.800 but again i think resonating a lot with what tanya said it's you know i earthbound started
00:22:19.540 out with like very Aries energy, like, boom, go, nothing will stop us. We will ram through any
00:22:25.100 obstacle. You know, there's, there's nothing that can stop us. We've got fire, fire, fire, fire.
00:22:31.220 And then I can't like sustainably do that anymore. My, my body and my mind will not let me.
00:22:39.420 Right. So what are kind of other ways of engaging in the world while still feeling like I have
00:22:45.580 value you know in our world everything you know all the messages that we get from capitalism from
00:22:51.780 our society and i mean this is in our mindset um is that we gotta grind we gotta go we gotta you
00:22:57.700 know push ourselves to the limit and go beyond our limits like this is the ethos right go beyond
00:23:03.980 our limits push push push and that is the key to success like if you push hard enough one day
00:23:09.780 you'll get to this mythical place of success and wow it'll feel so good i hope one day and meanwhile
00:23:15.200 you're grinding down your body you're grinding down your mental state you're eroding your you
00:23:20.140 know corroding and eroding your social relationships because you're you're working so hard you know and
00:23:26.060 I think that this was something that really happened at the beginning of Earthbound and then
00:23:31.560 like when I got sick and also when Tanya started you know dealing with some chronic issues as well
00:23:37.360 it was sort of like, whoa, we need to radically reimagine how we're engaging with our art as a
00:23:46.340 process, but also like, you know, and the production of it, but what we're producing as well,
00:23:52.300 you know? And I think, I think that, yeah, slowing down has been a huge thing. Like there's a pace,
00:24:00.480 there is a pace that, that, that, that our bodies ask us to go at that projects like Earthbound has
00:24:06.940 a spirit and that spirit has asked us to slow down too you know things things just sort of
00:24:13.780 seem to kind of want to go at a certain pace or rhythm or cadence you know and and and if you want
00:24:20.780 to push through that you know and kind of grind up against it there's a lot of friction you know
00:24:26.320 but if you tune in and you listen and you go slower you know sometimes you can't do everything
00:24:32.040 that you might want to do but sometimes you can do one or two things a lot better and a lot deeper
00:24:37.760 with a lot more authenticity at least that's what I'm feeling you know there's there's sort of like
00:24:42.640 when when when there's no more choice you've only got one choice of a way to engage in the world
00:24:49.440 and and and as much pain as I carry every single day I am also so grateful for the lessons and
00:24:57.320 the medicine and the gift that this illness has brought me. And I mean, and this is by no way to
00:25:03.020 gloss over like the deep grief and sorrow that I feel every day, every day, you know, but,
00:25:11.840 but I'm grateful for going slower. And if, and, and, and, and, and also learning to tune into my
00:25:17.660 body. I mean, I didn't know how to listen to my body. I mean, I know now that I look back that
00:25:24.120 my body was screaming at me for years. You're getting sick. You're getting sick. Here's the
00:25:29.160 sign. Here's the sign. Here's the sign. And I did not listen. Like I would just, you know,
00:25:34.600 I have ADHD. So I would just like take more Adderall, drink more coffee. I would, you know,
00:25:39.200 whatever, you know, I would just push through, I would push through. And I, and it's like,
00:25:45.380 I regret that going back, looking back, I regret so much that I wasn't able to listen. And I think
00:25:50.080 that there's like a body literacy you know a way of tuning in and listening to the subtle cues of
00:25:55.360 our bodies that like I personally was not taught in my family I mean forget about schools we're
00:26:03.320 never taught that in our schools and in our culture we're also not taught to tune in and
00:26:06.780 listen to those like our bodies speak to us every day you know but but but it's subtle and if we
00:26:13.460 don't have that literacy or that language to decode it it's really easy to ignore it you know
00:26:19.660 can you can you tell our listeners like what because you you have learned yourself to listen
00:26:27.280 and most of us don't hear it at all can you tell our listeners like how I mean yours was like I'm
00:26:34.460 gonna scream so loud that you can't not hear me anymore yeah but maybe in in pursuit of harm
00:26:40.260 reduction for ourselves for the future like what what what do you wish you had heard like what
00:26:45.880 what kind of literacy can you body literacy can you give us I mean a big big thing is I mean
00:26:55.080 one of the biggest things when I first got sick was noticing how my thoughts were affecting my
00:27:02.780 pain levels so literally very very acutely and obviously when I would go into sort of
00:27:10.080 anxiety mode or, you know, ruminative thoughts, you know, panicking about things, you know,
00:27:20.660 it was as if there was some sort of switch that would go into my body and I could feel pain just
00:27:26.460 like igniting, you know? So this way of, it became very clear of the ways that I was thinking
00:27:33.880 about my experience in the world was physically affecting my body. And it became, I mean, it was
00:27:40.700 so loud. I mean, you know, if I would panic like, oh my God, how am I going to, you know, go get my
00:27:45.280 groceries? I haven't been able to move for a week. Who am I going to call? Oh my gosh, I don't know
00:27:49.300 how to ask for help, you know? And then I'd be in a huge pain flare, you know? So, I mean, that was
00:27:56.440 a big lesson for me to sort of sit and just see how many of the thoughts that were in the back
00:28:02.260 of my head were actually draining so much energy out of me and also quite literally causing pain.
00:28:11.040 So I'm thinking a lot about becoming aware. I mean, to answer your question, one of the big
00:28:16.000 tools that I have is becoming aware of my thoughts and just listening to my thoughts,
00:28:21.520 watching my thoughts and seeing how my body responds to it. Another thing too is it blows
00:28:27.260 my mind to think about how I never knew what the signs of hunger were. Okay. Like I, I never knew
00:28:34.460 what my, how my body was telling me I'm hungry because my, most of my life I've engaged with
00:28:39.860 eating through emotional eating. So like stress eating or, Oh my God, I haven't eaten in like
00:28:44.860 10 hours. I got to stuff something in my face, you know, or, Oh, I'm so stressed. I'm going to eat
00:28:49.400 like, you know, a big tub of ice cream. But this was like my emotions dictating my hunger. It wasn't
00:28:56.320 my body being like, Hey, I need some energy. Can you please feed me some protein? And it was really
00:29:01.200 interesting to sort of make that switch where, okay, now that I'm aware of my thoughts and how
00:29:06.480 my emotions are dictating my movements, my engagement in the world, when I kind of can
00:29:11.360 look beyond that, I could listen deeper. And my body was like, Hey Sky, I'm hungry. You know,
00:29:17.320 and now I know what it's like to feel hungry. I know that maybe that sounds very bizarre. I don't
00:29:22.620 know, or maybe you're resonating with it. But for me, it was like, I mean, I thought I knew what it
00:29:27.140 was like to be hungry. But in fact, it was my emotions being like, eat, you know, and it wasn't
00:29:32.120 my body, I wasn't tuning into what my body was saying. So yeah, I think those are some some
00:29:36.180 things. And I mean, I really, yeah, just taking on sort of a critical awareness of my body and
00:29:44.800 trying to just tune tune into what my thoughts are saying and what my body is saying. Yeah,
00:29:50.080 I don't know if that those examples kind of resonate or make sense.
00:29:54.340 Yeah. I think we're, we're all just full body nodding.
00:29:58.100 Yeah. We can keep riffing on this,
00:30:00.660 but I do have stuff to say about the hero's journey.
00:30:02.720 So one of the things like the, you know,
00:30:05.660 the earthbound works with is this idea of queering the hero's journey.
00:30:10.320 Right. So there's this famous book by Joseph Campbell,
00:30:13.940 a cis white guy from like, I don't know,
00:30:15.540 the sixties or seventies who sort of studied mythology and came up with this
00:30:19.960 idea of like the epic hero's journey, right? And so there's like the young warrior sets out on a
00:30:25.520 journey, goes beyond the realms of the norm, meets like an enemy, must defeat it, comes back to the
00:30:32.000 village and is like the hero, you know, kind of basically. That's very much like a patriarchal
00:30:38.340 way of envisioning like the hero's journey, right? That there's kind of this eternal struggle,
00:30:44.520 right and this is very much present in like you know I am thinking about like a lot of people who
00:30:50.520 have Lyme call themselves Lyme warriors or cancer warriors or like we're gonna defeat this and I'm
00:30:55.280 gonna get back to where I was before and I'm gonna be stronger and better and like I don't know I'm
00:31:02.840 kind of like fuck that you know what I mean like I I I I want to see and listen to what the lessons 0.96
00:31:10.780 are, you know, and go slowly and, and, and understand the process. And, and like, quite 0.99
00:31:16.440 frankly, like I'm sick and I am working hard to, you know, manage my symptoms, but I don't want to
00:31:25.420 go back and get better. Like it drives me like, it's like a huge pet peeve of mine when people
00:31:31.640 are like, Oh, I hope you get better. And I'm like, no, I don't want to get better. Better
00:31:35.160 is implying that I'm going to go back to some state that I was before. And this resonates so
00:31:39.780 much for me around COVID. You know, you kind of got the camps of people who are like, yeah,
00:31:44.020 back to normal. And then other people who are like, no, there's no normal. There's no going
00:31:50.200 back to that, to what it was before. And I feel very similarly like that, that I'm much more at
00:31:58.740 ease with slowly going through this process of illness and learning to live well in a sick body
00:32:06.320 and gathering bits of knowledge and bits of experience that I wisdom that I can share that
00:32:11.960 I can hold with me you know it doesn't have to be this great battle and I mean something that I
00:32:16.380 really am learning a lot from like disability justice activists that I'm following you know
00:32:21.780 on social media and stuff is that there's no healing for me if there's not healing for the
00:32:26.940 larger systems in the world I don't want to get better you know if there's not sort of accessible
00:32:32.580 housing affordable housing health care and home care that's actually based in care you know and
00:32:39.880 and and and humanity and patient-centered and honoring and validating the experiences in our
00:32:46.140 bodies not gaslighting us there's no healing until there's like nutritious healthy food for
00:32:51.660 everybody accessible for everybody you know it's like for me that's the queering of the hero's
00:32:57.240 journey. It's, I don't want to fight something. I want to get together with other people and
00:33:02.520 creatively destroy the systems and the structures that are keeping the world inaccessible and
00:33:08.700 keeping us sick and making us sick. That is healing. Of course, I resonate fully a hundred
00:33:14.620 percent on what Sky is saying. I, and I've, I've been with Sky since the beginning of everything
00:33:24.520 that's been shifting and and also learning so much and about compassion and empathy and
00:33:32.080 and and listening right and and what it is to actually be there for someone you know I've been
00:33:39.680 also witnessing a lot of the injustices that surround illnesses and how people are really
00:33:44.900 kind of like caught up in their own lives and they don't just there's lacking a general sense
00:33:52.260 of compassion in our foundations in our society um and that's i think that's one of the biggest
00:33:59.320 flaws that we hold in these structures that we are living in so if i look back now now i'm like
00:34:06.800 kind of going back to like when you asked me why am i so physical in the work that i do
00:34:10.740 i think it all comes down to um ancestral reverence um i feel like through the body
00:34:20.220 through the expression of the body listening to the body uh and and also deciphering and
00:34:26.000 understanding all the lessons that come with carrying pain and struggle i feel it's all kind
00:34:31.780 of it's all connecting to uh ancestral lineage the guilt that we carry the the being lineage
00:34:39.240 from colonizers to like the confusion of like of having no culture and and and trying to figure
00:34:46.200 out like what is our spiritual sense and then and then through all these mediums it just kind of
00:34:52.600 goes back into this primal state okay I'm I'm wrestling it's primal it's real it's visceral
00:34:59.360 it's going back to the root yeah that primal core being in my body is very revolutionary for me
00:35:06.040 because growing up I've always was considered a bigger girl or whatever you know and and I've
00:35:14.540 been bullied my whole life and and and and being told that I wasn't physically able to be sporty
00:35:23.380 or whatever always been put down and to realize that no actually my body is made to be really
00:35:29.920 physical I have lots of energy and it was a lot of like society's projections that were like kind of
00:35:35.140 like kind of pushing me away from from my essence you know and then so then you know exploring other
00:35:43.160 mediums as well uh with tattooing and pottery especially pottery I mean it's I feel like it's
00:35:52.300 it's a way that I can communicate kind of in the subconscious so like a lot of my work is a lot
00:35:59.160 about self-love and self-acceptance um and I was able to kind of transfer that uh through a physical
00:36:07.140 medium by creating these objects either being belly planters and to really accept parts of my
00:36:16.220 body that I've been secretly rejecting or hating or just kind of holding a lot of society's
00:36:25.240 projections and then through self-love then you heal so much through the different layers and
00:36:32.440 and generationally too so I feel like that's why I'm my art resonates and or like streams through
00:36:41.440 like physical avenues is because I'm trying to get in touch and be connected with a body that
00:36:52.660 that society has tried to make me dissociate from so much in so many ways growing a beard at 11
00:37:03.480 was so confusing it was such a big secret secret that I've been holding on to for a really long
00:37:10.500 time and it was and it was only what I have three 32 I'm 34 now yes that I decided to grow my beard
00:37:18.440 And when I did that, I feel like I unlocked all my queer ancestors in my lineage, like just like be who you are, smash that binary and just like embody who you feel like being, which is I'm a bearded woman that like embodies both energies, male and female.
00:37:39.420 And it's never the same. It's always shifting in and out of motion. 0.69
00:37:45.040 for a really long time I lived in with so much anger so much anger of you know rejection and
00:37:54.760 not fitting in and defensiveness and and also carrying this uh the men's strength and an inner
00:38:02.340 knowing and connection to something that was bigger than me how I knew that I just was blessed
00:38:09.220 that I was born that way you're so good and you're actually connecting to the exact thing
00:38:14.600 I want to talk about, which is your body as a site of magic. What are times that you've known
00:38:22.560 that? What are times that you've felt that? Is there a relationship with your body that's magical?
00:38:27.960 Do you use your body as a tool of magic? And I feel like you're already talking about that. But
00:38:32.640 if I can help you connect with that part of the story, that's what I would love to hear you both
00:38:38.120 talk about next if that's okay definitely I mean from a very young age I mean from like the age of
00:38:44.880 five between five and seven I was convinced I was a witch I just knew it I just knew it and like
00:38:51.980 I had weird epiphanies of like you know hiding like hiding in the closet and like talking and
00:38:59.820 to myself and be like I'm gonna be a public figure I'm gonna be but how look at my body
00:39:07.140 i'm so ugly but then i would like break free and it's like no i have something to say and like
00:39:12.420 and and being confused about that and it would come out in all kinds of messy ways um but i always
00:39:20.180 held on to this core this core i i was always connected somehow and i i'm i'm so immensely
00:39:26.360 grateful for that because that was like that source connection helped me go through so many
00:39:32.840 series of of obstacles especially when it came to body image just because i always found this
00:39:39.580 injustice of like why is this person allowed to be allowed to wear what they want like you know
00:39:46.620 whatever short skirts crock tops whatever all the things that i wanted to wear but like people are
00:39:53.220 like no no don't wear this you're too big you're too this you do that no no no i shattered that 0.82
00:39:58.220 like in my teens i was like fuck it i i was very very very super rebellious and angry and like 0.98
00:40:06.120 unapologetic like to the extreme i had a like a big huge mohawk i was wearing like stripper boots 0.97
00:40:13.060 like at like 14 you know like really to the extreme but this is i needed to break free and i
00:40:20.280 created this shield i just became this temple of like undestructible force of of i am who i am and
00:40:30.900 i'll be who the hell i want to be no matter what and you will not change me and you will not influence
00:40:37.820 me to be otherwise and i carried through carried through but then i realized i was like holding on
00:40:42.400 this huge shield for so long that like and and for me that was like kind of um holding this like
00:40:49.740 very uh outward force which i associated more to like male masculine energy it was like kind of a
00:40:57.000 muscle that i would be working all the time by like putting myself in situations or just wearing
00:41:01.860 ridiculous not really good ridiculous things but just like things that would be viewed as like
00:41:07.620 really marginalized or are alternatives i guess or eccentric i mean that that is super super
00:41:18.000 relatable for me because i you know i same kind of thing i was like oh you think i'm weird i'll
00:41:24.220 show you weird you think this is weird i'm gonna be the weirdest you know and it's kind of like
00:41:30.960 it is it is like um a proclamation a proclamation a declaration of war but also like you say very 0.98
00:41:38.920 much a shield at the same time yeah because there was just so much bullshit trying to penetrate it
00:41:44.600 all the time right like i just like learn to like really uh weed out or just like block out all the
00:41:51.320 things people would say and then if i would be uh hanging out with people that that are really
00:41:57.240 sensitive to other people's projections they wouldn't they wouldn't know how to did you see
00:42:02.560 that did you see this i'm like nah don't worry about it and that's a form that's a form of magic
00:42:07.740 you know to be able of to be able to hold this protection shield to the point that you you're
00:42:14.540 not affected by the illusions and the simulation that's outside of you you know it's like really
00:42:22.480 you're you're like kind of i'm like creating my own reality in ways of or how i'm i'm creating
00:42:28.820 this like this navigation system of of choosing how i want to interact with the outer world and
00:42:38.220 then it comes in different cycles in different ways right so for a long a part of my life it's 0.98
00:42:43.660 like that very like wow rebel doing me this is me and like fuck off you know it's like i'm not 0.88
00:42:50.180 in that energy anymore i realized that my field and my being wanted to experience what it is to 0.97
00:42:57.100 receive and to just be and not just be this like driving force all the time and so and that that's
00:43:06.180 when i when i saw the magic of slowing down and listening in and and then realize that like oh
00:43:13.640 oh okay there's this voice here that's telling me my belly is disgusting and that I need to
00:43:20.300 lose weight and I still have body dysmorphia and I'm okay well this has been so quiet for so long
00:43:27.020 because I mean I was in action mode for so long so it was kind of like muffling that voice and
00:43:33.760 now that everything is kind of like I'm not in this outwardly energy anymore I'm more in this
00:43:39.460 like oh i have to sit here and heal what's talking to me and this is where i've i started to refine
00:43:48.660 my physical practices more and bringing into more of a sacred essence to it just like my tattooing
00:43:54.560 wasn't just this like i'm here to make a drawing on you and i'm so detached from it no it's when
00:44:01.320 my practice ritual really started to enrich itself um and and my perspectives started to change so
00:44:07.580 the the initiative uh ancient art of tattooing and what really that means it's like this like
00:44:13.400 energetically it's it's it's it's huge you're like you're you're marking someone you're
00:44:20.200 transforming someone's body for life with a symbol i believe in animism so i feel like anything you
00:44:26.500 know has life to it has has connections to everything and once that perspective is open
00:44:31.260 in the sense of when i you know i feel like that that shift changed when i slowed down and was
00:44:37.080 able to just be like there's no there's no way turning back from it right and then with the
00:44:42.480 pottery well really bringing that extra physical physicality to it making the belly planters and
00:44:49.280 actually okay sitting there and and making something and be like i love my belly really
00:44:54.680 do you love your belly yes i love my belly not not fully but i'm trying i'm trying like i'm
00:45:00.400 making that extra material move which is alchemy it's magic when it's coming out from your head
00:45:09.920 and you're actually exposing those those voices that you've been put casting aside because you're
00:45:17.020 either a shame of them right because you're like no no i've got this yeah and i'm confident yeah
00:45:21.400 a lot of people tell me all the time wow you're so confident how do you get your confidence
00:45:25.960 So then you don't necessarily want to, like, highlight those times that are, like, you know, in secret that, you know, actually there's so many different angles here that you don't see.
00:45:38.660 And sharing, like writing, I started a TikTok about, you know, being more open about my beard and my process and being vulnerable has really unlocked a different layer and a different level of self-acceptance.
00:45:54.660 is when you start sharing your experience sharing your story and being honest you know out there
00:46:03.820 out of your head out of out of your your body as well because we trap emotions in different parts
00:46:12.300 and when we release them and and we share with love and acceptance that's where the real real
00:46:20.700 powerful stuff powerful magic really starts emerging and and and working yeah maybe we can
00:46:28.620 ask sky about this too like the magical body and radical self-acceptance and how these two things
00:46:35.520 intersect yeah they definitely intersect i'd say that you know one thing oh there's so much to say
00:46:47.140 Well, one thing I'll start with, I'll start with this. One thing that for sure has happened to me since I became ill is that I have become much more disciplined in my daily ritual practice. Like it's become an anchor for me, like disciplined as in, as in this is me being dedicated to myself, right? Dedicated to show up as much as I can.
00:47:13.880 I mean, sometimes if I'm lying in bed, and I can't leave, even if it's just taking a moment to be like, I'm connecting in with my guides, I'm connecting in with my ancestors, you know, even if it's 30 seconds, that's my daily practice. And it's been years that I've been saying to myself, okay, you know, I've gotten these messages, sky, sky, you got to have a daily practice, this is, this is going to help you, you know, and I'm like, yeah, okay, okay, yeah, and then I do it for a bit, and then I'd let it go.
00:47:41.460 and then I do it for a bit but it especially like being ill has in a way pushed me into having a
00:47:49.180 regular practice because I notice very very clearly the days that I when I do not connect
00:47:56.400 when I do not make and carve out intentional ritual space and time that my symptoms are worse
00:48:02.140 hands down I mean it's as simple as that you know so so again another one of these gifts you know
00:48:08.720 is that there's something that I've wanted to do for a long time, but I have been pushed into doing
00:48:15.000 it. And I think taking, taking that time. And I think the biggest part for me is being really
00:48:19.400 gentle. Like what's the phrase gentle tenacity, you know? So, so some days like I can't, you know,
00:48:27.060 get up and, and, and sit at my altar and, and do a whole elaborate thing. If I can just sit
00:48:33.000 and close my eyes, that's enough. But it's really, I think about making an intentional connection and
00:48:38.260 that intentional space is me connecting to my body, is connecting to my guides, connecting to
00:48:43.280 the earth. And that for me has been incredibly powerful and has been an anchor. The amount of
00:48:49.160 grief that I've lived with in the last few years has been enormous. I'm currently living with my
00:48:55.360 grandmother. I had to leave my job. I had to leave my house. I gave up my beautiful, precious cat
00:49:01.260 babies. I gave away all my plants, which were also my babies, you know, and I had to leave everything
00:49:06.640 so I could move in with my family to be cared for you know um I was lost I and I still feel lost I
00:49:15.420 mean we're all lost in many ways but this was like seriously lost like what is my life going
00:49:20.660 to become who am I going to be who am I and I think that it's in those times of change like
00:49:26.640 all of our bodies all of us go through change right that is that is the only thing that is
00:49:33.860 continuous is change right and and and the way that we engage with change will affect how
00:49:41.000 what medicine we can get from it also what harms it can do to us you know how we resist it or how
00:49:47.160 we lean into it and for me my magical practice has been huge in terms of understanding and seeing
00:49:54.160 and listening to the opportunities that change brings it's opening my eyes it's tuning in and
00:50:00.560 like my ancestors being like hey there's this going on or hey there's this going on you know
00:50:04.980 the earth speaking to me and saying wow I'm so glad that you are taking the time to actually
00:50:10.040 genuinely connect with me I know you've been trying to do it for a long time Sky but you've
00:50:14.800 been mostly doing the gestures you're doing it authentically now or you're deepening that
00:50:18.180 practice let's say I'm not you know there's always deeper to go there's no sort of yes or no you can
00:50:22.880 always deepen that practice and and so yeah I think it's been an anchor for me through change
00:50:28.400 And I mean, this is something that I didn't realize, you know, in my able bodied state is that all of us will get sick. I mean, most of us will get sick or disabled at some point in our lives, right? Aging or otherwise.
00:50:45.920 there's this sense of like what have I lost you know but also what am I gaining what new
00:50:52.760 opportunities or ways of inhabiting my body and engaging with the world are there and my magical
00:50:58.100 practice has helped me find that that's been the biggest thing and it's been the biggest anchor
00:51:03.620 how do you be at peace and calm in a body that is like has a million sirens running off
00:51:12.040 uh, all the time, you know, how do you find a moment of calm there? And I mean, you know,
00:51:19.040 basically you can't, but you can sometimes go into that moment of calm and then you're swept
00:51:22.960 back out. And, and, and, and, and my magical practice has helped me find that pathway back
00:51:27.560 to that sanctuary, right. Back to that place of refuge where even though there's, you know,
00:51:33.600 pain and confusion that I can sit in that sanctuary and I can connect to it, even if
00:51:38.700 it's for a micro moment i would love for us collectively to head towards as like um something
00:51:46.460 we leave our listeners who are here with us and in their bodies and in their ears and so so so
00:51:54.360 many of them experiencing chronic pain the rates of chronic pain are insane if we can as we as we
00:52:00.220 bounce towards the end here think about solstice and if you have a thought on a way that all of us
00:52:09.620 can maybe on that solstice as we listen to this episode or in the days surrounding it
00:52:14.240 maybe have a ritual or a practice maybe it's something from wrestling or something you're
00:52:20.620 doing that brings us back home to our bodies that's a big one for sure i mean i feel like
00:52:32.700 the foundations of all this is really about finding your inner sanctuary like you were saying
00:52:37.960 sky and it's really the foundations and fundamentals of like what we're trying to
00:52:42.780 to to bring with earthbound right is to find your inner ally so you don't feel alone in all this so
00:52:50.600 if you're like going through chronic pain you're going through a transitional state you're you're
00:52:56.040 you're going through there's a huge storm all around you at least you can find your center
00:53:00.760 and go within and feel bewildered by the stories to discover within yourself and I feel like that's
00:53:08.320 what pulled me through in many different ways I had to try to discover to find a nice sweet spot
00:53:14.020 within but i feel like it's where it all comes down to it's like feeling at ease and feeling
00:53:20.400 safe and at home which is our bodies no matter what state it is yeah i just want to like have
00:53:29.180 you repeat for the back row find your inner ally find your inner ally find your inner ally i want
00:53:37.200 to carry that with me like for the rest of my life i do want i do want to tell a quick story though
00:53:43.920 um to our listeners tanya and sky were there so they know this story but uh before the pandemic
00:53:50.660 these two came out to my place for uh uh it must have been it must have been saw win because it
00:53:56.580 was very ancestor focus the two of you yes and tanya and sky if this was so this would have been
00:54:05.100 i guess maybe about five months after my father died and tanya and sky showed up to do some
00:54:11.020 ancestor veneration sky i don't even think i had ever met you before tanya it was no very very like
00:54:16.980 acquaintance mutual friend kind of thing um so these two virtual strangers showed up in my house
00:54:22.800 and what they brought with them was and this is a fact my father's absolute favorite dessert
00:54:30.060 as an offering to the ancestors and that experience again contending with the with the
00:54:39.220 grief and the relief of my father dying and you know the light and the shadow of all of those
00:54:45.540 feelings and to have the two of you show up bearing his favorite dessert and I'm talking
00:54:51.360 favorite I'm talking like he would talk about it we would get it at Christmas because it was a big
00:54:56.200 deal um it was so validating and I just want to sort of I know we're wrapping up we're getting
00:55:03.980 to the end of the line here but I just really couldn't let this opportunity to thank you both
00:55:09.020 pass thank you for that opportunity to meet you and and and and and do that ritual together and
00:55:17.160 and connect about our you know common common ancestry as well right from eastern european
00:55:23.620 descendants yeah marco spagley i can still taste the bagel yeah i mean this is like kind of like
00:55:32.420 the classic tale of how the ancestors work through us right it's like a whole team of them that are
00:55:40.340 that are kind of like conspiring and weaving these connections and these webs of support so
00:55:47.440 thank you for uh sharing that and how much it meant to you and to uh your father that uh we
00:55:55.120 magically appeared with this but it was definitely meant to be it it felt and like i say validating
00:56:02.020 is the word that i because it was just like it was it was a message from the universe and from
00:56:07.000 you and sky but also from my father that just like yes just like a yes you know i propose we put that
00:56:15.380 in the uh altar or in the ritual space for your lisa rituals is eat your ancestors favorite
00:56:24.240 desserts please or bring your your ancestors favorite desserts to a friend and see if maybe
00:56:32.140 it was also your favorite dessert the more dessert the better i think
00:56:39.500 you know the sweetness of summer you know is is this good bring loads of fruits right i mean it
00:56:50.820 also it also symbolizes the fruits of our labor right it's it's a perfect time to to bring that
00:56:57.060 symbol on the summer solstice i'll just tell you this quickly and then and then i want to hear sky
00:57:03.380 what you're thinking but we um a year ago we were in the midst of a of a renovation here out at our
00:57:10.860 house on the lake and i went with my like one-year-old daughter and salvaged all the wild
00:57:16.080 strawberry plants that were going to get crushed by this renovation and we made a little strawberry
00:57:20.580 patch and we made her a little sandbox and nothing fruited last year but this year there are so many
00:57:27.700 strawberries in this little patch like more than anywhere else and so I think there's something
00:57:34.860 there as a lesson for me right now that's just tending to them and gathering them in a space
00:57:41.880 so that they didn't feel alone and they didn't get crushed meant that they offered a wild abundance 0.96
00:57:46.420 of fruit and your patience you didn't say those fucking strawberry plants last year and we didn't 0.78
00:57:51.640 fruit you know you you gave them their time the time that they needed that that resonates a lot 0.94
00:57:57.340 for a lot of us i mean i feel over the past year we felt like we were we didn't really fruit
00:58:03.080 and and and there was a lot of there was a big pause in our production right and now
00:58:10.960 i feel like there's just some really juicy sweet lessons about to emerge honoring this
00:58:20.540 you know new cycle in the summer solstice of 2021 slowing down pays off yeah and i i want to sort of
00:58:30.500 conclude with these two words from sky um sky that you said earlier gentle tenacity i'm gonna carry
00:58:37.760 that with me into my summer solstice and beyond right I loved it when you said that
00:58:44.320 be tenacious but be very gentle and caring with ourselves yep stick to it keep going keep trying
00:58:53.340 but yeah forgiveness patience and love to ourselves and others and Tanya find your inner ally
00:59:01.300 i mean that definitely that is something we've worked on worked on together as earthbound this
00:59:09.120 is what we've explored and refined and what we're trying to teach um and so yeah we're we're bringing
00:59:16.800 it into another uh another level this summer we applied for a grant uh what's the exact grant
00:59:23.360 called to the sky so it's with the city of montreal and it's for um les practices artistiques
00:59:29.540 amateur so amateur arts practices cool and it's a it's a community-based yeah it's a community-based
00:59:37.840 grant so it's for doing community arts practices that involve people from different um neighborhoods
00:59:44.100 in the city it's for uh um a youth camp for marginalized lgbt uh to uh 2s lgbtq plus youth
00:59:54.040 um and uh we're doing it's kind of the pilot 2.0 we're going to have around 12 participants and
01:00:01.800 we're gonna it's going to be a series of workshops either clowning drag wrestling wrestling
01:00:08.680 storytelling costume all these just so they can actually really dive deep and uh explore their
01:00:17.340 inner ally which is you know they're the character that they will be creating and become their inner
01:00:23.620 ally they become exactly body they express it in the material world yeah yeah and and ways we're
01:00:29.900 gonna you know share so they can tap into their inner reserves which is their inner ally and
01:00:35.920 unlock that and bring it into the physical realm and and and uh yeah bring that material magic
01:00:43.800 that inner alchemy and bring it forth and share the inner alchemy so if our listeners want to
01:00:51.220 find out more about your project or if they want to support you what's the best way to find y'all
01:00:56.580 um you can go to um www.earthboundfutures.com yeah and we're also on facebook uh i believe
01:01:10.740 it's earthbound futures you could just do a search and we're also on instagram earthbound futures
01:01:16.880 mm-hmm exactly the adding updates about the summer uh summer activities there and
01:01:23.440 we're collaborating with this amazing um not like collective called press start that um
01:01:30.800 that right now they're operating at best monset which is another one of our partners we're going
01:01:35.300 to be doing um the the summer camp at buts monset point saint chal and uh it's yeah it's what an
01:01:43.040 honored is to see the project expanding in different corners with other really radical folks
01:01:49.760 that hold so many talents um and yeah so it's um it's it's it's really inspiring and exciting
01:01:58.040 and also a little scary but like the good stuff you know and and the best part about i think one
01:02:05.340 of our big motivations for this camp is to also create activities and spaces for queer marginalized
01:02:14.000 trans youth it sort of create these spaces that we never had growing up right like spaces to
01:02:20.680 explore and experiment and tap into that magic like their own personal magic and their their
01:02:27.240 inner ally you know how powerful I mean how many times have Tanya and I spoken about how powerful
01:02:33.220 it would have been if I were 16 and I had had these tools like my life would be radically
01:02:38.800 different you know and and and and doing it in a way that's like fun and expressive and joyful
01:02:44.740 and joyful we need space for for joy for for for marginalized youth you know for them to feel
01:02:51.040 like they could have a voice and that they have spaces to to express themselves and and we want
01:02:57.020 to help co-create that with them to cultivate that the playfulness and the innocence right
01:03:02.140 keep that intact alive yeah and and have a safe space to explore that you know it's a safe space
01:03:09.680 to to grow and embody who you really are and your authentic self which i feel generationally
01:03:17.300 there wasn't enough spaces in like the educational systems to to be able to to hold that or or
01:03:24.460 support that and so exactly what was sky was saying i wish i had this is why we're doing this
01:03:29.920 It's like our 16-year-old selves wish that this would happen, you know, that they would have been part of that.
01:03:36.800 If I would have seen someone like me, the beard, you know, a cisgendered person with a beard. 0.83
01:03:42.720 And as an 11-year-old, 12-year-old, it would have totally changed the way that I viewed myself or how I loved myself or accepted myself. 0.96
01:03:52.500 But that's okay.
01:03:53.280 It's just that's what I have to go through.
01:03:55.200 And now I'm at a point, we're at a point that we can share our tools. 0.90
01:03:58.360 as as witchy queer elders you know we want to create these we're learning to be elders you
01:04:04.600 know and I think a lot of that is about enabling and helping empower the future you know you know 0.98
01:04:11.880 it it has been described as a science fiction project and I think like even science fiction
01:04:17.660 couldn't possibly put a limit on what earthbound futures can do I love that you put futures in
01:04:22.860 in the actual title of your project because it really just seems like it could expand into
01:04:28.080 anything and everything yeah well thank you so much for having us again for being here
