00:00:15.400 You aren't being a purple woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:20.760 You must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:24.400 Welcome listeners. 0.98
00:00:25.680 Welcome witches.
00:00:27.060 Welcome punk rock cats.
00:00:29.080 welcome coven mates welcome all the colors all the feelings all the places you might be at in
00:00:38.200 the spectrum of rage to delight all of that is welcome at the missing witches podcast and we're
00:00:46.060 really glad you're here with us and i am really glad to be here today i already feel sort of
00:00:51.860 buoyed by color and joy and friendliness with the guests that we have today sarah potter
00:00:58.820 welcome to the missing witches podcast do you feel like um introducing yourself introducing
00:01:05.500 yourself in the way that like you feel you are today you can give us your cocktail line or 0.99
00:01:09.800 you can fuck a cocktail line you can fuck the whole cocktail line if you want i have no judgment 0.99
00:01:14.040 about that but you could like dismiss any prepared statements and just tell us how you're feeling 1.00
00:01:19.840 today oh well my name is sarah potter and i am a witch i am feeling effervescent today and i'm
00:01:33.460 feeling quite well hydrated really lovely and like a hydrated bubble how nice good job with
00:01:42.360 your self-care today sarah potter you know thank you that's really nice to hear
00:01:48.300 you're doing things right there's so many fun ways that you approach witchcraft it makes me
00:01:56.420 smile to get to talk to you which is a pleasure because not all conversations these days can sort
00:02:01.520 of fill us with hope and optimism and joy but you do seem to have that power can you talk about how
00:02:07.580 you find if you feel like you do find a rootedness in that does it have to do with color i want to
00:02:12.740 hear all the things you think about color and magic two of my favorite topics to chat about
00:02:18.340 you know to be honest i think the way you really live a technicolor dream filled with joy and
00:02:28.000 optimism and inspiration is when you've known the deepest darkest depths of the shadows of despair
00:02:36.620 and you're able to come out of it on the other side more than once you know we only have the
00:02:44.380 light when we experience the dark so that's to me why i feel like i truly feel like living a rainbow
00:02:53.180 and finding the joy is not to dismiss the sadness and pain it's to support those feelings and
00:03:03.660 those dark spaces of the shadow with a reminder that rainbows are there too even if you can't
00:03:11.600 necessarily see them or feel them because I have certainly had times in my life where
00:03:17.120 it was very difficult to find or see or notice any of those notions of light.
00:03:25.860 I'm sorry you've been dragged through the underworld but I'm glad you came back with that
00:03:31.120 awareness of the contrast me too I think it gives me a good perspective a well-rounded perspective
00:03:42.160 and it's definitely helped me embrace that compassion for myself which is certainly not
00:03:48.340 easy which I like to bring forth in my work and with clients and I think that self-compassion
00:03:56.420 self-love and self-acceptance and we all had a little bit more of that it's so much easier to
00:04:02.360 rating it outwards to other people I mean we would live in such a different world I want you to help
00:04:08.820 me and us imagine that world like what is the what is the utopian world what is the what is the post
00:04:16.340 do we have to do post-apocalypse what's the pre-utopia world you know well you know what's
00:04:22.700 funny is i feel like my earliest imagery of magic was through the wizard of oz and i just told this
00:04:31.700 visual of when glinda comes in as the pink bubble and kind of arrives as this effervescent
00:04:41.120 pink shimmering bubble and you know she doesn't ride around on a broomstick she's in this bubble
00:04:48.580 And I was like, that's how I want to enter a room too. And then I feel like it's Lisa Frank isn't inherently magical and witchcraft, but I feel like she is this otherworldly, trippy, psychedelic magic that really informed a lot of my visual languages.
00:05:12.400 a few years before i found tarot and witchcraft and had a little bit more of that spark of the
00:05:18.660 understanding of magic and so i feel like that pre-utopia everyone's arriving in their pink
00:05:29.100 shimmering bubbles like we don't have cars anymore and it looks very much like a lisa frank
00:05:37.020 acid trip I don't know I'm feeling like the beach but it's also the forest and it's also
00:05:44.920 the desert and it's a land that maybe we've never seen or experienced before but it is radiating
00:05:53.400 with psychedelic vibrant color and why color what did you know about color and how it was magical
00:06:02.780 How is color like a path for you into understanding witchcraft?
00:06:06.460 Why is there more color in the utopian world?
00:06:09.220 You know, I just always loved color.
00:06:12.360 I feel like I've always loved to draw and create as a kid.
00:06:16.960 I grew up before screams.
00:06:18.360 We're all creative beings.
00:06:20.500 I just think that children accept it far more easily without the weight of adulthood or the weight of criticism.
00:06:29.040 just like I think we see that acceptance of magic and intuition is so much easier when we're younger
00:06:35.820 but to me like color is just so exciting like that's the language that I speak in and that
00:06:43.060 I understand I live in New York City the land of wearing all black and and I used to wear all black
00:06:49.860 but really tapping into that language of color it just feels like the right way to express myself I
00:06:58.040 was never much of a numbers person I always liked the visuals and color and pictures are what struck
00:07:07.760 my imagination but I feel like gosh imagine a world without color I don't even want to actually
00:07:15.120 let's not imagine that but no let's imagine a world with more color yes more color and shades
00:07:21.640 and tones we can't even fathom because we haven't encountered them yet it's just so exciting
00:07:29.420 yes i was thinking about new york and san francisco places i've been where
00:07:35.640 sometimes it does feel like you're in like a a gray palette you know there or there's like
00:07:42.800 10 trench coats and like the occasional neon on sportswear or whatever someone goes jogging by
00:07:49.300 Maybe a San Francisco thing, but but like places where it feels like, I don't know, the Western desire to sort of keep things normal and the same has somehow gotten stronger than in other places where it's a little bit easier to be weird.
00:08:04.860 It's easy to be weird in San Francisco and New York in the right neighborhoods.
00:08:07.980 But, you know, yes, I was thinking about that feeling.
00:08:11.480 I guess every downtown has that. Are there times when you're in those places where you have a
00:08:18.360 feeling like you could call forth more color? Are there ways that people in those places could call
00:08:23.200 forth more color? I don't know. Oh, absolutely. I also feel like the first thing to do is really
00:08:30.320 tap into the moments of small joy and pleasure. And one way I do that is I do get to travel a lot
00:08:39.520 for work and I always do something I call like getting to know the plants and I like to look for
00:08:47.120 the trees and the flowers because even in urban environments there's there's life growing
00:08:52.880 everywhere and I like to take pictures of them and I'm I'm laughing because I was just in LA
00:08:59.500 with two of my dear friends and I was like you know what I like to do on our walks I have to
00:09:05.160 find the flowers and document them. And so there actually is lots of color everywhere. You just
00:09:11.160 have to look for it. The other thing is, is even if you can't see it visually, you can feel it
00:09:18.160 energetically. And one of the best ways to tap into the power of color is simply by closing your
00:09:24.200 eyes and visualizing those colors. And I really like to do a visualization where you picture
00:09:31.600 yourself surrounded in a colorful mist and then breathe that mist in through your nose and send
00:09:39.020 it circulating through your body hitting every point that needs that that little extra boost
00:09:45.160 of color and then exhaling the color and i've done that many times on the subway which is truly a
00:09:53.480 portal to another realm and you really can feel that impact of whatever energy you're looking for
00:10:01.580 and color's always there for you.
00:10:05.360 I'm so happy to hear you say that.
00:10:07.120 Do you feel like colors sort of have a universal meaning or association
00:10:13.540 or is it sort of nature nurture?
00:10:16.940 Like if I have a relationship with the color red that is personal,
00:10:20.540 does that override a larger cultural or inherent sort of vibe in the color?
00:10:26.440 Is there a tension between those two things?
00:10:28.720 Absolutely.
00:10:29.240 I do believe in that universal language of color that's hitting us on a subconscious
00:10:33.920 level and definitely that nature nurture way that you were describing, different cultural
00:10:39.900 references, different ways that we've grown up absolutely affect our relationships with
00:10:45.680 color.
00:10:46.520 I've been teaching a color magic workshop and before the pandemic, I was traveling a
00:10:51.760 lot to teach that and I get to learn so much from the people who take these classes and
00:10:59.240 And being able to see what colors people really connect with based on where they live and how memory ties in to that effect of the color.
00:11:10.380 Because I do feel like something I would hear over and over again is that someone had to maybe wear a uniform at school in a particular color.
00:11:19.680 Or usually it was something with like kind of almost like had to have a relationship with that color they didn't want to have.
00:11:25.660 It brought in that negative connotation.
00:11:27.580 Or on the flip side, something really positive or a happy memory or a good memory or how someone grows up with a color like baby was their favorite color in childhood and it continues to be their favorite color absolutely enhances that meaning.
00:11:41.620 The magic of color, the magic of that energy is a magical practice with witchcraft.
00:11:47.360 You are the beacon of energy.
00:11:50.740 You are the creator of that magic.
00:11:52.640 So if something is meant to have a desired effect, but you don't feel that way and you're not connecting with it, then look at how many colors there are.
00:12:01.680 There's absolutely a color for you and your intention.
00:12:04.820 You should do what feels right to you.
00:12:07.460 Can you talk more about color magic, what it is, how people might start to use it, what they might look for in a workshop with you?
00:12:15.680 So I could basically guarantee you're already working with the magic of color if you're listening to this show.
00:12:21.840 but sometimes we need to have it kind of turned on or clued in for us because each color inherently
00:12:29.320 holds the vibration and energy of a particular emotion a particular response that we're looking
00:12:36.200 for and my goal with these workshops is to help you understand that i do find that our favorite
00:12:44.500 colors and our least favorite color say a lot about what we're currently going through the
00:12:50.940 kind of energy we're inviting in or maybe repelling and often I find that the least favorite color
00:12:57.400 says a lot about the energy that we're pushing away but often need to invite in and we can work
00:13:05.340 with the magic of color in so many different ways it can be how you adorn yourself how you adorn
00:13:11.120 your home the foods we eat and even in our spell crafting how we adorn our altars how we
00:13:19.980 work with candles I think candles are such a lovely way to really tap into the magic of color
00:13:26.180 and then you can start layering with it and play with it to me it sparks a lot of creativity
00:13:31.780 the way you bring in all of these elements and then I find that truly when you tap into it
00:13:40.380 if there's a particular intention you're working on a particular color you start to see it
00:13:46.380 everywhere and that always feels like a lovely link from the universe to keep you going and
00:13:51.540 inspired to follow it through I love thinking about color because it's one of these things 0.99
00:13:57.040 that's like well one it's kind of anti-capitalist in a way like you don't really have to buy shit
00:14:02.640 you can start to notice it you can start to pull it through you can surround yourself with it
00:14:07.680 but it also seems like deceptively simple right like I'm like I want to feel more brave so I wear
00:14:15.000 read like is that really witchcraft you know what I mean can you talk more about how you in your
00:14:20.320 experience now of doing this work for a long time how do you feel like that magic works like what's
00:14:25.220 really happening there well so I really love how you pointed out that the magic of color is really
00:14:30.740 anti-capitalist because that's what I love about it too I feel like now more than ever with the 0.91
00:14:36.360 popularity of witchcraft we have more and more access to tools and and it can be like fun to
00:14:45.700 buy stuff i mean looking at all those like glittering crystals but we don't need any stuff
00:14:52.920 like we don't need anything you are the magical tool and i've definitely had times in my life where
00:15:00.400 I could not afford a crystal I could not afford anything extra and I don't want anyone to forget
00:15:08.140 their own inherent power because I think that when we lose sight of that that's when things can feel
00:15:15.040 really dark and really hopeless and as far as working with color and like oh isn't it really
00:15:23.040 simple aren't most things really simple like I think as humans we complicate a lot and some
00:15:29.520 things are complicated but I think there is something really powerful in a belief system
00:15:35.820 and how you enhance those beliefs and those intentions and truly like that's what all the
00:15:42.720 tools are for are to enhance our own power and intention our own magic so yeah I think we could
00:15:52.960 kind of write things off and be like oh it's really simple but like it's what do you do with
00:15:58.460 this intention i mean it would be really nice to say oh paint your nails purple and now your
00:16:05.680 intuition is going to be on fire but even if you turn up the volume on your intuition are you
00:16:12.300 listening to it what do you do and that's what i think is so important about magic and spell work
00:16:18.580 is you can set the intention but then you have to show up and follow through and i think having
00:16:26.440 something that enhances and supports the follow-through like color makes it a little easier
00:16:32.920 to do and I do think that a spiritual practice is serious I think that magic is serious I think
00:16:40.000 our impact is serious but it's not black and white it doesn't have to be all serious it can
00:16:47.780 be enjoyable and fun while it's serious and I don't think there's anything wrong with
00:16:53.240 finding the joy in your spiritual practice I mean we witches have important work to do here
00:17:00.880 so we can't be burning ourselves out I think it's important to enjoy too and to really see
00:17:09.120 how multifaceted our work is so color helps me be reminded of that and I've learned that I am
00:17:17.540 far more creative and inspired when i'm taking good care of myself when i'm enjoying what i do
00:17:24.700 and flip the perspective so i can find that that joy and what i get to do instead of what i have to
00:17:34.440 do so it's so funny sometimes it's like oh like it's just color it's so silly it's so simple but
00:17:41.120 it's really not it's so powerful i love the way you said that but also it can sustain our
00:17:47.520 joy and can sustain our, our work. We have important work to do. And I also loved your
00:17:52.400 point about, you know, you can set the intention, but you got to show up and how do we support
00:17:57.200 ourselves? Like you do a spell, but you got to keep being there in that intention sometimes for
00:18:02.200 years. Yes. Ah, my most effective spells are gamers. I don't know how I waited so long,
00:18:12.500 you know, but I do think like having small touchstones that kept me anchored in that
00:18:17.620 vision and that hope and that aspiration was all made all the difference. And so learning to work
00:18:23.580 with color is something that like I just play with, but I love the way you think about it.
00:18:27.540 Can you give us something, some, you said earlier, you do believe in a universal set of
00:18:34.660 associations around color, not to paraphrase you badly, but something like that. Totally.
00:18:39.580 Can you talk more about like, how can we sustain ourselves with color in this moment? You know, this moment sometimes feels terrifying and heavy and also sometimes feels really exciting. You know, our climate is terrifying. The world can be really terrifying. Fascism is terrifying. Can we talk about color in the face of that world? Like, how can we arm ourselves with color?
00:19:03.960 oh I love thinking about that because personally something that guides me through the terrors of
00:19:12.780 the reality of being a human especially in today's world is that you can't give up like
00:19:21.720 because I feel like when you look at everything as these huge
00:19:25.020 horrible tragedies it can be hard to find hope in that but I do feel like we can do our best
00:19:35.060 to make the world a little bit better every single day and I don't think anyone should
00:19:43.080 dismiss that I do feel like the way we create long-lasting change is through a series of small
00:19:50.800 changes. And I really do think being the best person you can be, not going out of your way to
00:19:58.200 make someone's life more difficult, truly trying to make it easier. I think about how to put our
00:20:06.520 money towards the causes and people that we believe in. I think it's really important to
00:20:12.200 support the people you care about, especially if they own their own businesses and the way you show
00:20:18.020 up can it doesn't have to be financially I think that has the biggest impact if we're going to be
00:20:23.640 really honest about it but there are so many different ways we can support the people we
00:20:28.160 care about because to me like I want to see small businesses succeed I want to see my friends succeed
00:20:34.840 with their pursuit creatively and professionally and I just think there's so many different ways
00:20:43.540 to approach that every day and if we think of oh what I do doesn't matter if everyone thinks that
00:20:52.460 that's going to be a horrible place to live and it won't matter but I really think it's focusing on
00:20:59.020 how do you maintain honesty integrity self-care so that you can care for other people show up
00:21:07.340 support so something I even think about is pink is the color of love it's the color of self-love
00:21:15.100 partnered love friendship sweetness kindness so I think working with that color in the morning
00:21:21.420 even just doing that visualization I talked about earlier of breathing in a pink mist
00:21:26.940 accepting yourself loving yourself having compassion for yourself and everything you're
00:21:32.680 going through and radiating all of that outward to other people i think that that's a really nice
00:21:39.680 way to ground and start the day and then considering other intentions that you might have for that day
00:21:46.940 and you can bring those in through the colors i truly do believe like i grew up in the punk rock
00:21:52.460 community like diy is the way to go you can absolutely have a big impact and don't wait
00:21:59.240 for anyone else to give you permission to do something to make change to stand up for what
00:22:04.680 you believe in no one's going to give you that permission so I think it's just taking charge
00:22:10.120 and doing it and being with the people in your community creating that community so everyone's
00:22:15.600 on the same page far bigger change happens at that level than I think places that are maybe
00:22:21.500 seeking to have the power see yes we're here for diy community magic always and i do love that
00:22:30.680 idea pink is such a delight right with all my pink flamingos and everything behind me but but i
00:22:37.100 associate it with friendship really like with with friend love like that totally sincere i have
00:22:43.060 fallen in love with this woman i just met because she's everything and i'm obsessed with my new best
00:22:48.640 friend you know yes isn't that the best the best and world changing i don't know i i like i like
00:22:56.300 your idea too of like these small things are important noticing these small changes these
00:23:01.220 small things this can be really healing and really change making oh absolutely and i even think about
00:23:07.580 when i receive some sort of unexpected kindness it changes my whole day and i feel like people
00:23:15.220 don't have to to do that but when they choose to share something sometimes I'll get messages
00:23:22.120 they'll start out like oh I don't even know if you're going to see this but I wanted to tell you
00:23:26.880 that I attended this event and this is how it affected me I mean I do read it and that keeps
00:23:35.780 me inspired sometimes it can feel like am I just like yelling into the void are people just like
00:23:41.200 oh this little nutty witch what is she talking about are people hearing it so when something
00:23:46.800 even like that where maybe for that person it felt like nothing to them to say that but 0.65
00:23:52.780 those kind words meant so much to me and I feel like you never know what kind of day someone's
00:23:59.620 having and I go through moments of not feeling inspired or being exhausted and and just even
00:24:07.940 receiving a nice note like that turns my whole day around. And I feel like that kind of that
00:24:14.160 fills my cup more. And then I can give that to someone else. And that's what I mean. I can think
00:24:20.540 really big. I'm a Virgo. I'm a perfectionist. I want to do everything I can. But I've also seen
00:24:28.300 how when you feel like you're not going to get something totally right, or it's not going to
00:24:33.880 have that big impactful change oh like why would i even do that when we start to think like that
00:24:39.640 that's when everything breaks down so i always feel like what can you do today what are you
00:24:44.860 capable of doing what can you do that's going to leave the world a little bit better than
00:24:49.840 before you got up this morning and you do that every day the world changes 0.70
00:24:57.060 can you talk about being a public witch like first of all coming out of the broom closet is
00:25:06.260 something that so many people of our listeners that are coming in are at various stages of
00:25:10.460 thinking about right for some people that is actually not safe at all so it's a totally
00:25:15.040 private practice for other people they're starting to figure out maybe this is something i could
00:25:19.840 claim and maybe i want to but i actually don't know how like what would it be like if i say to
00:25:24.960 my family or my friends I'm a witch and then so I would love to hear what that was like for you
00:25:29.980 and then I have follow-up questions because you have taken that bravery to another place where
00:25:34.080 then you're sharing your work in the public in a way that people are invited to participate people
00:25:38.940 come in person to participate in rituals with you that's a further sort of bravery and inclusiveness
00:25:45.280 I think so I'd love to hear more about what all that is like so what I do remember I mean for a
00:25:51.940 long time I kept being a witch very secretive I feel like I would kind of dip a toe out
00:26:00.260 get ruthlessly made fun of and then scurry back in like yeah too much and
00:26:06.960 and it was always there even when I even tried to shut it out or act like I didn't know about
00:26:16.980 these things or just kind of live what I guess was a double life in a way I used to scurry to
00:26:25.940 the beach after my job at a bar and like talk to the moon and talk to the ocean and cry and set my
00:26:34.520 intentions and do things and then like like I feel like I was like I was so brave back then going to
00:26:41.320 the ocean at like three o'clock in the morning being so wrapped up in this my magical practice
00:26:47.520 but also not wanting anyone to know what I was doing I feel like like I hate to admit it but
00:26:54.700 it's just like anything that made me feel even more different than I already felt like I just
00:26:59.560 wanted to keep that away I just want to look as normal as possible which just makes me laugh now
00:27:04.580 because like what even does that mean but I was letting magic become more and more part of my
00:27:12.460 work I worked in the art world and I feel like it was always there if you were paying attention
00:27:18.540 really closely you could see it but I just was going through a series of hardships where I feel
00:27:26.040 like I wasn't able to really be I wasn't feeling really accepted by like my friends or my partner
00:27:34.280 and when a lot of those friendships ended when that partnership ended I just felt this like
00:27:42.260 so much of me had been stifled and it was in such a way that I couldn't live like that anymore and I
00:27:50.280 I can be a little extreme where it's like okay I'm so hidden and shut off from that like now
00:27:56.380 I don't ever want to hide anything ever again people need to know I'm a witch like I'm not
00:28:00.740 hiding it and you know I feel like time and age tarot witchcraft has helped me understand it
00:28:08.620 doesn't have to be this or that but I understand where I was coming from at the time and I was
00:28:16.720 doing an interview about an event that I had coming up and I was going to share in that
00:28:21.780 interview that the reason why I did this work was because I was a witch and taking my spiritual
00:28:28.160 practice so seriously and the way it informed my professional work I just didn't really want to
00:28:34.980 hide it anymore I felt like I had just hidden so much of myself that I was actually very proud of
00:28:41.380 being a witch even though I'd been made fun of forever and and hid it I didn't want to hide it
00:28:46.620 anymore and I remember one of my friends who was also a witch was like you're gonna kill your
00:28:50.240 career like that's it and once you come out of the broom closet you can't go back in and you're
00:28:56.080 doing this in a pretty public way and i was like well i was given this opportunity and i want people
00:29:04.720 to see like you can be like a sparkly rainbow and a witch because i had also i don't know i'd also
00:29:13.020 been told stuff i feel like for witches i thought i was friends with were like well you don't fit
00:29:19.500 the mold of what a witch is like right right right talk more about that because I think we do
00:29:26.120 especially when we're in that part where we've been like just trying to be the same and like
00:29:31.880 we've probably been buffeted and battered by all the ways we're not the same and that was probably
00:29:38.760 really hard and then to have this one idea of what a witch is and know that like the word and
00:29:44.320 the magic and everything I'm drawn to is in there but I don't look like that I I don't the the like
00:29:51.920 anyway I'm talking I want you to talk more about it you're so much more eloquent about it than I am
00:29:56.260 no no well and you know what I think is really cool is I think that look we have a long way to
00:30:03.700 go with so many things right now but we have I just see so many beautiful examples of of a witch
00:30:12.620 now and this is because of social media like when i was growing up and finding witchcraft
00:30:17.480 do you know where i went to barnes and noble and i went to an aol chat room which met at like 2 p.m
00:30:24.520 on sundays i was talking to who knows who in there even the media that showed witches when i was
00:30:31.240 growing up it was the craft which was very cool and sabrina the teenage witch and you know i
00:30:37.540 mentioned glinda and there are so many movies of practical magic but you know it's still very
00:30:43.440 limited the view of what what a witch could be and i think that people make assumptions about
00:30:50.260 things people come in with their own kind of biases and perspectives and what i really love
00:30:56.460 about social media is that it's like anyone can be a witch everyone is a witch a witch is someone
00:31:03.180 who celebrates their own inherent power and their connection to the greater universe that's how I
00:31:09.440 define a witch for myself but what I think is really lovely is the witch is its own living
00:31:14.480 breathing entity that comes in so many different forms and will never stop shape-shifting so
00:31:23.420 you know I think we all want to see ourselves in something and if you're not able to see yourself
00:31:29.680 in something tangible can be really hard to find your space and I think that's something a lot of
00:31:35.880 us witches can relate to is like where do I fit in we don't fit in and that's okay like we see the
00:31:44.140 world in a different way and we're able to work in a different way that doesn't come without its
00:31:48.420 challenges and something that I hope is that I can remind people like you can be the full rainbow
00:31:57.720 and I need the reminder like you don't have to be just one way to be a witch like that's so
00:32:03.880 gross and old and like we should be welcoming I think anyone and everyone into this practice
00:32:13.740 into this craft and we need different perspectives we need different ways of seeing and viewing the
00:32:20.340 world and I think all of that magic is welcome and valid and important I think that's something
00:32:27.160 we can all really share is having that hard time finding our space and it breaks my heart when i
00:32:34.800 hear that if other witches are doing that to witches like we need each other and we should
00:32:41.700 be celebrating each other i think but you know we're only human okay can you talk more about
00:32:49.340 taking that next step okay now i'm a professional witch like come to me talk about that
00:32:57.300 yes you know and this is what's so sweet it's like i do feel like there is all of this interest
00:33:03.620 in magic manifestation intention setting witchcraft there's still a lot of fear of that so
00:33:11.780 I still get people finding my address and sending me some not so nice communications or
00:33:20.080 thinking I need my soul to be saved. It doesn't. It's good. But I feel like I relate really well
00:33:30.180 to my friends who share their creative output, whether it's through having an exhibition of
00:33:38.620 their artwork or playing a concert it's really hard to share who you are and to share that really
00:33:46.120 deep inner realm with people and I have my ways that I psych myself up and that I get ready to
00:33:57.780 to go out there and share with people and there's something that I really want people to feel
00:34:05.200 welcome in magic and I want people to feel welcome in a ritual I mean I always think about
00:34:11.980 how if you've celebrated your birthday by lighting candles on a cake and singing and
00:34:18.960 making a wish and blowing out the candles you have done or fell so whether you knew it or not
00:34:25.420 you are very magical and you know I think that not everything has to be for everyone
00:34:34.800 but I do feel that we all feel the effects of the moon and I would like everyone to feel welcome at
00:34:41.020 a full moon ceremony with me and things don't have to be like freaky and scary or prohibitive
00:34:49.840 I think that having a moment to be able to sit and be reflective to consider the collective energy
00:34:57.580 why you're maybe feeling the way you're feeling and how to work with that instead of against it
00:35:03.400 to think about what's going well what's not working what you want to call in what you want
00:35:08.880 to get rid of and release just taking that time and being present breathing I think it can have
00:35:17.980 profound effects so I didn't really have spaces like that and I think it can feel a little
00:35:27.200 vulnerable or require a little bravery to go to something where you don't know what it's going to
00:35:33.840 be and I like being able to gather and be magical and hear music and I just think a lot of what
00:35:43.220 inspires me is creating the events that I want to attend and inviting people to join me I mean
00:35:52.020 sometimes I step back and I'm like, whoa, that is like such a trip to do that. I led a full moon
00:36:00.780 ceremony last week for about 350 people. And I mean, the fact that there's even interest in
00:36:09.520 something like that blows my mind. And I feel like what a special time to be alive. It was on
00:36:18.680 a billboard talk about like not having to keep witchcraft a secret i feel like the luckiest
00:36:25.080 wisp in the world honestly it's just like and i i always i kind of in some of my meditations go and
00:36:34.840 tell my younger self like it's okay to be a weirdo like keep doing what you're doing
00:36:41.140 your mind is gonna be blown when you see where you're headed i get to meet young witches who
00:36:48.300 are like just starting out I get to meet people in many phases of their lives who are just checking
00:36:53.860 in with magic and connecting with it and feeling magical and that's so exciting sometimes I get a
00:37:00.920 little overwhelmed it's not easy getting up there in front of hundreds of people and I've really
00:37:07.240 been working on focusing on all of the good that's happening and just to be really specific
00:37:14.680 it can be hard to get up there and find the one person who's making fun of you for being up there
00:37:21.220 and I'm like do you want to switch places share part of the depths of your soul but you know
00:37:28.580 that's okay not everyone's gonna enjoy themselves we all have our stuff and that's something of
00:37:34.300 mine that I'm working on but man I don't know how some people get up there and perform for
00:37:41.620 thousands of people it's not easy but I've learned how to take better care of myself like you know
00:37:48.660 staying hydrated getting some sleep but like hanging out with my friends listening to good
00:37:55.360 music and having fun that makes it all so much easier to do but I just kind of try to approach
00:38:04.060 it it's like well this is my job and this is what I'm doing today so get up there and do it
00:38:11.620 ah i i feel like in every interview i get to a point where i want to ask some version of the
00:38:17.060 question like who gave you permission like not that i think anybody should but i i am so 0.99
00:38:22.960 enamored with the not ballsiness with the cuntiness that's like i gave myself fucking 0.95
00:38:30.860 permission hi i'm the host 300 people let me take you through you know what i mean like how 0.98
00:38:37.040 how do you how do you do it who gave you permission how did you find that that courage you know oh my
00:38:43.440 gosh you know who I think I think it's 12 year old me like she was really very ballsy and I have so
00:38:52.940 many nieces and nephews and I want them to grow up in a better world that really drives and inspires
00:39:00.000 me a lot to really think about what kind of world I'd like to see for them I wish that when I was
00:39:07.400 12 and I found witchcraft and I was struggling with being a psychic child I wish there was someone
00:39:17.320 who was telling me it was okay I mean my mom was super supportive of me so my mom was always
00:39:26.480 encouraging me and reminding me like this wasn't weird this is totally natural this is totally
00:39:32.060 acceptable and the fact that I had that is I mean I can't even express the gratitude I feel for that
00:39:39.440 but yeah I just I think I do a lot of time traveling back to to heal that part of myself
00:39:49.080 and I just really think like if I was going through it I know so many other people are
00:39:55.420 going through it too I feel like we try to help in the places where we need help too so I always
00:40:03.180 feel like there were times in my life where I needed to strengthen my intuition where I needed
00:40:07.640 to be connected to people who understood magic and that inherent collective connection who wanted to
00:40:15.720 stand up and fight for the things that they believe in and I just feel like yeah I don't
00:40:22.860 want anyone to feel some of the things that I felt in the past so if I can help to facilitate
00:40:28.960 and create that space then that's what it is and I feel like oh I truly do believe the world needs
00:40:37.340 more magic but I can't just hope and wish for that I have to lead by example so I'm gonna enchant
00:40:44.560 people and convince them that we need to have more rituals and you can feel the impact of it
00:40:51.460 immediately like that's what I love about about magic in that sense where it does make people
00:40:58.320 feel better it does make people feel supported and empowered and people keep coming back so
00:41:04.220 nothing shows the proof like that what how do you what kind of ritual do you structure for 300
00:41:14.440 people so much of my work is completely private I can't even imagine the few times I've tried to
00:41:19.480 need something for other people I felt like I slipped into a performer version of myself that
00:41:24.840 lost some of my natural connection to my magic I have a hard time not shifting into
00:41:32.320 yeah like not fake but like a really performative version of it I have to be alone for some of it
00:41:39.500 to feel right I can't imagine how you do it what kind of rituals even make sense to guide that many
00:41:45.540 people through? Well, I think teaching workshops and doing lectures definitely helped me understand
00:41:50.700 timing and capacity and being an aunt because a lot of my nieces and nephews are toddlers.
00:41:57.820 You know what I've learned? Adults aren't that different from toddlers. Like we don't have
00:42:02.500 much of an attention span. And I feel like you don't have to dumb things down. I think of it
00:42:10.120 as welcoming people. I love my three-year-old niece. She likes to meditate with crystals and
00:42:14.760 she gets it like we don't have to dumb it down she understands that you don't have to make these
00:42:20.180 things simplistic for people to connect into it so i make it like a multi-dimensional experience
00:42:26.220 i work with a great team at the asbury hotel where i'm every month doing these ceremonies
00:42:31.620 we have a great lighting great music great drink some beautiful environment there's vendors too
00:42:39.360 who bring their wares so it's a full-on experience i like to be entertained so i need to have
00:42:45.060 activities wherever i am i always like to just talk to people briefly about what's going on
00:42:51.180 energetically that month talk about what sign the sun is in what sign the moon is in we talk about
00:42:58.200 what that means in terms of how we're feeling or what we might be going through and then lead
00:43:04.560 everyone through a guided meditation and then doing some sort of participatory ritual with
00:43:11.000 setting intentions, maybe lighting it on fire. People love a little like fire show, doing a
00:43:16.540 little like chanting and invocation and having something to take home with them too, to remember
00:43:22.960 the evening to check back in on. And now I've been doing this with the hotel about 14, 15 months. So
00:43:29.360 seeing how people's lives have changed and transformed my own life changed and transformed
00:43:34.620 and then being able to connect and on that and the way people have connected and come back to that
00:43:40.980 and even I want to touch upon what you're talking about like feeling like a performer
00:43:45.360 I mean it is essentially a performance and to me I do think I have to step into a role that
00:43:53.700 it's me but it's also not me it's an enhancement of who I am and I think we do that every day
00:44:01.840 you put on you most people put on different clothes to work like I put I don't wear like
00:44:07.360 my regular clothes to leave these rituals they're a version of like what I would wear
00:44:12.680 and I have a way that I do my makeup and I have a way I do my hair and I have the songs I listen
00:44:20.200 too before I go see people and it's a time to open and it's a time to close and I think when
00:44:27.080 you're interfacing with people on that level I don't think there's anything wrong with enhancing
00:44:32.180 that but I think that's what we do to face the day too you know you put on your work clothes and you
00:44:38.880 style your hair and maybe put on makeup or do whatever it is that makes you feel ready to face
00:44:46.480 your day and then you come home and you put on your pajamas and you go to bed so I had to come
00:44:54.560 to a place where I understood that kind of persona and have that acceptance of it but
00:44:59.680 it's how we become something that's just an enhancement of who we are which I think is
00:45:06.480 also what magic is it's an enhancement of who we are I think that gives people including myself
00:45:13.920 a lot of confidence to step into that role right whether it's which or just one step more honest
00:45:23.720 one step more free one step more creative seeing it as part of the magic that I'm going to put on
00:45:31.100 clothes that give me strength I'm going to wear colors that play this role I'm going to become
00:45:35.360 an archetype or like I'm going to give myself talismans and it's okay that that is maybe
00:45:40.520 different than the magic I do that is super interior I wear different clothes totally and
00:45:48.120 I think it's okay to have things that are yours like I feel like the rituals I do in my own
00:45:55.560 practice in my own home or with my coven I'm not going to do that with 350 people it's not really
00:46:02.040 appropriate and that's not what they're there for but I do think there's like there is something
00:46:07.560 that works in different situations and finding that I don't think makes it any less serious or
00:46:13.800 purposeful, but it's also working with what you have, figuring out what works with a crowd of
00:46:19.900 that size so everyone feels comfortable and safe and included. How do you make 300 people feel
00:46:24.780 included? You don't have them move around too much. Yeah, I know what you mean. There's a lot
00:46:37.440 of just like event logistics like how do you let them feel it's okay to be here see that other
00:46:43.800 people are engaging in magic too but don't look out too much because you start to sort of doubt
00:46:48.460 yourself or i don't know it's interesting interesting like relational dynamics in a crowd
00:46:53.780 like that and i think a lot of it is if you're a babysitter or you're a children it gives you a lot
00:47:01.800 of understanding like don't give people too much time they'll start chattering their minds start
00:47:06.880 wandering you've got to keep people on task and keep things moving and and have that structure
00:47:11.820 and schedule and again simplicity like it doesn't have to be complicated it shouldn't be complicated
00:47:20.040 sometimes I ask for our listeners is there one practice or ritual or song or color or like is
00:47:31.180 there one thing that they can borrow from you for this season is there one thing you'd share what's
00:47:35.840 working for you oh i love that there's so many things that are coming to mind i think i want to
00:47:43.000 share a few i really feel totally enchanted listening to florence and the machine or fleetwood
00:47:50.380 mac and i feel like songs are spells so i feel like if you really just need to shift the mood
00:47:57.360 and you need to feel magical i'd say like listen to your favorite song but i would love for you to
00:48:03.740 listen to one of my favorite songs so those are two of my current favorites right now I love
00:48:09.800 painting my nails and even if you don't want to maybe you don't want to paint your fingernails
00:48:15.000 but paint your toenails and maybe no one will see them and know about the magic and choosing a color
00:48:21.080 I just think that's so fun and you can really think about whatever intention it is that you're
00:48:26.920 setting and choose a color to enhance that intention and it can be a spell that you share
00:48:33.240 with the world or it could be a spell that you keep just for yourself and who knows what's going
00:48:39.920 on under your socks and shoes but that I feel like is really a lovely little spell to enchant
00:48:48.300 right now I've had the Florence and the Machine most recent album on repeat for like a year
00:48:53.540 it's in my car it's my car power oh I love that that's so good I was so scared of driving so I
00:49:01.500 really needed car power thank you for that how can the people find you support you throw money at you
00:49:08.600 learn from you well i'm on every social media channel but my favorite is instagram my handle
00:49:15.060 is i am sarah potter i'm having a lot of fun on substack i really am enjoying writing a newsletter
00:49:22.240 and i feel like it took me a little while to get into it because i was feeling like
00:49:26.240 oh i need it to be this and this and this and it has to be perfect and then i just took the
00:49:30.600 approach of I just want to have fun with it so once a month I send out a newsletter and I talk
00:49:35.900 about just something that's on my mind and I share my favorite things of the month and which is like
00:49:42.400 usually a song or a snack and some art and then I include a spell that you can do at home and I'm
00:49:51.960 just really really enjoying that so I'd love for you to subscribe to my sub stack I am always taking
00:49:58.400 new clients for one-on-one readings and I've been doing a lot of animal communication lately which
00:50:04.720 is just so fun animals are so fun but I do psychic mediumship and tarot readings and if you find
00:50:12.180 yourself on the Jersey Shore I hope you'll come to the full moon ceremonies at the Asbury
00:50:16.260 and I'm always popping up with rituals different places I love an excuse to travel I'll be back in
00:50:23.200 LA soon I have some things bubbling in Nashville and New Orleans and in my home of Manhattan so
