00:01:26.700i that's what i think about when i think of hoodoo so when you're getting ready to
00:01:33.680call an energy that's right now then i want you to use hoodoo and when you read my book that
00:01:41.700focuses on the bible um which is that hoodoo guide the bible to magic that root works by an
00:01:47.900actual hoodoo reader i really seriously mean this this is what i do every day and every night
00:01:52.040this is who i breathe and drink and sleep is um making sure that our ancestors and our guides
00:01:58.740are following that hoodoo wisdom um it's very inclusive it's very diverse it's bible-based
00:02:05.040magic but not restricted to a religion so hopefully that's everything you need to know
00:02:10.760about hoodoo and about that hoodoo lady and we'll get into your right well we'll get into
00:02:19.360your specific practice in a little bit but i want to open because i think a lot of my contemporaries
00:02:24.860hear the word bible and immediately you know they think white supremacist tool for colonialism
00:02:31.720and and i mean obviously we can't deny that the bible has been used as oh oh yes oh yes it really
00:02:39.580has it has been used as a tool for the um restriction the degradation they the general
00:02:48.080Everything that you can think of as hatred and fear and stress is part of that lineage of the Bible, from slaves to people that are immigrants to people that are non-English speakers to everything.
00:03:02.900They've used that tool to say, this is why you need to be a slave.0.82
00:03:07.020This is why you need to be in captivity.
00:05:05.080And that made me cry like no other because the author to that,0.65
00:05:10.520Nana Banshee-Darkwa, doctorate who does nothing but religious studies,
00:05:17.260She mentioned that even in Solomon, we talk about how Solomon speaks about he is black as night, and he is pretty much shunned, but still follow his words.
00:05:34.120And when I said, wait, wait, where did I read?
00:05:38.220That isn't something we talked about in any Bible study is that the members of the, the members of the Old Testament were ever of color, of any color. They were never women. They were never of color. Anyone that you had to follow was probably federal male, probably European, probably had money.
00:06:03.960we didn't have that back then none of us came from that there's way too many of us with curly
00:06:11.060hair for for us all to come from straight here i'm sorry that just no the facts are facts
00:06:21.880in in the in the in the book you mentioned um in the bible solomon says i am black
00:10:14.680Okay. So then I'm reading that, and I said, okay, so now we have the Africans. We have the Spanish and Latin. We have this empowered woman that from the age of 14 said, okay, this is what I'm going to do. This is my vessel. I'm using my body as a vessel to save the world. And we're not super women. We're not superheroes.1.00
00:11:58.380Again, I'm going to say the title for our listeners, you've heard it about 40 times, but I really love this book.
00:12:04.200So The Hoodoo Guide to the Bible, there's more to the title, but if you search The Hoodoo Guide to the Bible by Sherry Schoen, you will get this.
00:12:14.900And before I get too personal, I do want to talk a little bit more about the text of the Bible.
00:12:22.480Because, you know, again, my contemporaries and I, we, we tend to concentrate on the nasty bits, the Leviticus bits, the abomination bits. There's so much beautiful stuff in there. I'm thinking of Corinthians, love is patient, love is kind. I mean, that's like the classic Bible or Ecclesiastes to everything. There's a season, which the birds took their lyrics from. Do you have a favorite Bible verse?
00:12:52.480That's one of those nice ones that we don't have to reframe or recontextualize.
00:17:11.160I want us to take away those pronouns for a second and talk about what is the spirit of Timothy 2.12.
00:17:17.700The spirit of 212 is to make sure that we are ensuring that there is silence when there needs to be silence and that you are in complete control to where you can tell someone you need to be quiet.
00:17:34.860And I'm not going to permit you to have anything other than what I need you to say in this matter.
00:17:41.680This is exactly how we're going to do.0.71
00:17:43.640And I don't care where you need to roll your head, bat your eyes, put on your ugly face, whatever you need to do, whatever you need to do, take that energy back.1.00
00:17:55.860And what I do is I look at first the pronouns first, and I say, you know what, I do not permit a woman.1.00
00:18:01.980I'm going to take that woman out because if I'm doing this first to do any1.00
00:18:07.240binding work where I want them to stop gossiping about me,0.72
00:18:11.820where I want them to stop talking about me on my job,0.98
00:18:15.040where I want someone to keep their name out of my partner's mouths in a foul
00:18:22.080way, any of that, any of that, then I'm going to take that out.
00:18:47.460And we'll start with something really cute, like bunny foo-foo.1.00
00:18:50.140I do not permit little bunny foo-foo to teach or to have authority over who?
00:19:00.880To have authority over you, to have authority over your children, to have authority over your family, to have authority over your life, over your home, over those that love you.0.88
00:19:51.700Yeah, when you're in the middle of going through a negotiation and you're dealing with a contract with some attorneys and you have that other attorney that's doing opposing counsel and you say, you know what, I need that attorney blank blank to get off and to be quiet, then I want you to put in that attorney's name.
00:20:12.060And some of the times people will say, well, I don't have a name, Sherry.
00:23:15.480I think that's something that whether you're a beginner practitioner all the way up to whether you have an actual divine name, many of us do the same thing.
00:27:09.560that I think that one thing that I recommend that you do in the book that I recommend because I do
00:27:17.080it myself is I have a list of my go-to verses called who do the go these are the verses the
00:27:24.960tried and true verses that I can use in any situation and be okay with they will work with
00:27:31.600probably many of my clients all of my clients know that I'm bible based they will I have
00:27:38.460I neutralize them to the point where they are strong, where they need to be strong, and I try to make sure that they are not harmful in any way.
00:27:49.200Because it's so accessible, I feel that if you are ever in a situation where you go, you know, I really need to do a nice little spell, because I think many of us have been in that situation.
00:28:02.100If we're in a meeting or we're in a restaurant and something just happened and you don't feel really well with it, it's not fitting well in your presence, and you go, hmm, then you can whip out your phone and you can go to Bible.com and you can look up, hmm, this is something I need for this kind of feeling or emotion, and then you can make it yours and just recite it.
00:28:26.680and to me that's the beautiful freedom because you don't need anything other than that moment
00:28:33.200and that verse and if you have a couple of you all together to say it together that's even more
00:28:41.920power right because any of the work that we do is magnified when we have more of us together
00:28:48.300And that is why, to me, slave work was so important, because when we had these fires at the end of the night, when everyone would leave their cabins, when everyone would leave their huts, when everyone would leave their abodes, their slave dwellings, and they would go in the middle of a fire at the end of the night and all circle each other and keep each other held up in prayer with a verse.
00:32:28.560and then when you allow her to come into you and she starts to slap you around
00:32:35.760because she was not she was like she she would say you know you die or you go on either way
00:32:44.440you'll be free yeah yes she was not a coddler no not a coddler there was no coddling and i believe
00:32:54.300that in our magic world um many of the powerful magic that we do is not about being coddled right
00:33:00.860i think that we have as a as a society of practitioners some of the time we want to do
00:33:08.300light and love a little bit too much when there needs to be that actual opposite and we can't be
00:33:14.400afraid of that opposite it's balance nature is balance we need both yes yeah i i mean i've said
00:33:23.440a hundred times that I prefer a friend who's going to grab me by the scruff of my neck and
00:33:27.120pull me off the cliff than someone who's going to go great job sweetie and watch me walk off a cliff0.98
00:33:32.620no it was for you to grab me and tell me what are you doing woman yes please and if Harriet Tubman
00:33:42.280can do that for us like if I mean if she can't who can't who can right there are so many different
00:33:50.840But there was a – and then there's stories of other ancestors that are of other faiths, other traditions, other gender, other culture, that if Harriet doesn't work for you, then maybe there's Kuan Yin.
