00:00:11.460 Welcome back to another episode of Witches Found.
00:00:14.980 On this episode, Risa, you spoke to one of our favorite humans on this planet, Edgar Fabian Frias.
00:00:21.520 I'm going to say that again. Edgar Fabian Frias.
00:00:24.100 I was so thrilled and emotional to meet this person, this powerful mutant that we'd been following and receiving these electrical downloads from.
00:00:34.040 And our conversation made me laugh, brought me to tears and taught me things that I'm drawing on every day as I write and work.
00:00:41.620 So I'm so thankful and I'm so excited for you guys to listen to this beautiful interview and get this loving, sweet, vulnerable electrical power from Edgar Fabian Friest. 1.00
00:00:52.140 You aren't being a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:58.740 You must be a witch. 1.00
00:01:00.680 I just wanted to tell you and tell our listeners that we're in love. 0.97
00:01:06.620 We're just in love with you.
00:01:08.020 We're in internet.
00:01:09.440 We're just in deep, deep internet love with you.
00:01:13.080 And now I get to talk to you and I feel like I'm meeting an old friend
00:01:17.600 and also like a digital angel that came into our lives.
00:01:22.140 and it's just it's so exciting not to sort of freak you out with my intensity right off the
00:01:28.560 bat but we did we fell in love with you over the internet we stumbled on your instagram and it was 0.98
00:01:33.260 like this is a witch we've been missing this is why we're doing the whole fucking thing 0.98
00:01:38.060 so i wondered if you could start maybe by telling our our cozy listening coven 0.97
00:01:50.800 a little bit about the kinds of magic you make maybe just introduce us to your practice to your
00:01:58.200 praxis yeah definitely so um I have a pretty diverse practice um I am someone who's like
00:02:08.360 allowed myself in many ways to just kind of explore things that are interesting to me and
00:02:13.060 also to not be an expert at a lot of things and um to try things out uh so i definitely would say
00:02:21.040 like a big part of my practice is like kind of woven into what you know people call like
00:02:27.700 the metaphysical realm spirituality um and also cultural the cultural realms and also what people
00:02:36.140 call it the healing realms or like healing practices so I you know as an artist I definitely
00:02:43.100 make a lot of visual work I create a lot of spells that are sonically based or visually based
00:02:50.460 and I also do a lot of work within community I work with different like groups like the Golden
00:02:57.360 Dome or the Mystic Bazaar and connect with a lot of witches and definitely feel like the internet
00:03:04.320 has been such a powerful portal to you know as you're saying kind of find these witches that
00:03:10.860 have been missing and you know we're finding each other again through these webs and so I
00:03:17.040 definitely feel like a big part of my practice has been like kind of seeking out folks and like
00:03:21.400 working with media and with community organizing and with my practice to really kind of find those
00:03:29.740 connections forge community um in and forge community in a way that maybe um
00:03:36.440 it's kind of challenging the system of dislocation of capitalism you know like that
00:03:42.300 we're kind of moved around so much and a lot of us because of this system of oppression are forced
00:03:49.100 to move um and so like finding like how do we stay connected even if we have to be physically
00:03:55.240 in different spaces even temporally but then also in terms of my practice I also am a psychotherapist
00:04:03.500 too I'm not practicing right now because I'm fully focused on my art practice at this moment but
00:04:07.820 I definitely have a large part of my life that's been within the psychotherapy realm
00:04:12.200 practicing as a somatic psychotherapist and kind of doing different jobs around that
00:04:19.880 And I also have a tarot practice and an energy-based or spiritual practice
00:04:25.840 where I'm inefficient, I've helped create ceremonies with people,
00:04:32.160 I'm an intuitive, and I'm also a guide, and I work with tarot a lot.
00:04:37.120 And that practice is called Our Sacred Web.
00:04:39.500 So it's kind of like another part of my work where I offer services
00:04:42.960 that can kind of show up in different ways.
00:04:45.500 um there's so many things I want to ask you about all of that I mean I guess the one thing that I
00:04:51.140 just sort of stuck on is this feeling of like you know it can be so lonely um doing this work and
00:04:58.420 then finding each other over the internet and finding people like yourself that are that are
00:05:03.440 like that your work that your that your whole work your life work is is finding community and
00:05:09.200 making making the sacred in in those joints of community is so empowering can you tell us a
00:05:14.940 little bit more about Golden Dome School? Yeah, so the Golden Dome School was started by Eliza Swan
00:05:24.400 in 2014. Eliza Swan went to art school and definitely was challenged by being in the art
00:05:33.640 institution and kind of having lots of times her work being looked at through the white cis male
00:05:39.780 gaze and having a lot of the kind of ideas and the intuitions she was having around her work
00:05:46.560 be questioned. And I definitely resonate with that. I feel like for a long time, I felt very
00:05:53.680 marginalized, very alone within my practice as an artist, wanting to merge together spirituality
00:06:00.360 and creative practice. I got a lot of pushback. I remember I used to live in Portland, Oregon,
00:06:07.180 And I met Erin Aquarian, who is a powerful witch.
00:06:12.880 She goes by full-time witch.
00:06:14.540 And her and I kind of started kind of talking about how do we merge together spiritual practices with creative practices?
00:06:21.300 How do we bring them into community?
00:06:23.500 And that was one of the first times I felt like I met someone who was like, oh, my gosh, I get this.
00:06:27.940 I'm not, like, weirded out by you asking this question.
00:06:30.440 So, you know, inspired by that, Eliza started the Golden Dome as like an autonomous platform
00:06:37.920 where folks are able to organize like workshops, artist intensives, ceremonies.
00:06:46.700 And so at this point, there are artist intensives that happen both in New York and Los Angeles.
00:06:53.180 and I'm currently organizing a Golden Dome series here in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
00:07:01.440 And the series is connected to the rhizome
00:07:04.700 and so working with rhizomatic energy in different ways
00:07:07.900 and I've invited three Tulsa-based artists to be a part of this
00:07:12.040 and three Los Angeles-based artists.
00:07:15.600 Actually, Seyuan Oh and Kuan Yin, two powerful witches from Los Angeles,
00:07:20.320 are coming into Tulsa today, and we're going to be facilitating this weekend a Golden Dome
00:07:25.140 experience here in Tulsa. Oh, so cool. Okay, so tell us about Tulsa. Tell us where you are right
00:07:31.200 now. Let us picture your studio, if you can, and then maybe you could tell us, like, in a big sense
00:07:38.500 or, like, a really practical sense how you got there. Yeah, well, so it's, like, a long journey
00:07:46.920 in terms of how I got here. So I'll start off by describing, so by saying, so I'm in Tulsa,
00:07:53.360 Oklahoma. I never thought I would ever be in Oklahoma, but Goddess works in many different
00:07:58.780 ways, as we know. Sometimes she takes you to the heartland. Yeah, exactly. Sometimes
00:08:05.180 she brings you to the middle of the country. Yeah, and so I got here through the Tulsa
00:08:11.440 artist fellowship so um what's interesting is that two years ago i was on the oracle of los
00:08:18.280 angeles show and i was about to get my license my license in marriage and family therapy in
00:08:23.520 california and amanda was like what are you going to do once you get your license and the first
00:08:28.980 thing i could think of was i want to become a full-time artist like that's my goal i don't
00:08:33.960 know how i'm going to do that but i really want to just put therapy aside even for like six months
00:08:38.500 and I'm so grateful that I was able to become a finalist
00:08:43.280 and I found out like two weeks after I received my license
00:08:46.160 and that's I feel like kind of there's been a theme in my life
00:08:51.920 where when I was a young person I was 14
00:08:55.820 I was like in middle school
00:09:01.600 and I was brought to this art museum
00:09:03.780 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art
00:09:06.560 and um and i saw contemporary art for the first time in my life because i grew up in a pretty
00:09:12.160 um predominantly like immigrant community and we never went to museums so for me to see
00:09:16.960 contemporary art for the first time i was like my mind was blown open and i felt like i had my first
00:09:23.760 like mystical experience but i didn't understand it that way at the time and i just knew since that
00:09:30.320 moment that I wanted a life in the art realm um but then you know growing up in a small town
00:09:39.120 in rural California my family was very against that um and so when and they were even against
00:09:45.120 me going to college in general because they wanted me to get a job and I belonged to I was
00:09:50.080 Jehovah's Witness growing up so they were very against college as well so I had to like fight
00:09:55.760 just to go to college and once I got into college I took on a psychology degree one because I really
00:10:01.580 like psychology but two as a way to also appease my parents and while I was doing that program I
00:10:09.140 secretly started getting an art studio degree as well and like didn't tell my parents so
00:10:15.520 so for a while like I I kind of straddled that line between the two worlds and I feel like as I
00:10:22.960 developed I started to really be like I need to have art in my life so I've found different ways
00:10:29.280 to continue to have art in my life even if I've had to have like full-time jobs or like focus on
00:10:34.580 my therapy practice for a while I've always found a way to have art stay in my life and art really
00:10:40.600 has completely transformed my life in so many ways so I'm so grateful that my mind was blown
00:10:47.000 open at a young age because it really gave me that like drive and knowing that I needed to move
00:10:53.740 in this direction there was something really important about it and that's what kept me going
00:10:57.620 because you know with art lots of times it can be really uncertain and have years where nothing's
00:11:02.580 happening and I needed something to just kind of keep pushing me and saying like no there's
00:11:07.580 something here there's something here and keep moving in this direction and then you ended up
00:11:13.440 in Tulsa yeah yeah and here from Los Angeles yeah well I um we're talking to another witch 0.77
00:11:24.060 this season during witches found who um came from a Mormon background and kind of had to break her 0.69
00:11:32.380 life wide open to be a witch to to be that person that she was does that do you feel like that was 0.50
00:11:40.800 something that you had to do to leave the faith that you were grown up in?
00:11:46.300 Yeah.
00:11:47.060 I specifically remember as a memory when I was 15 and I was a part of a youth
00:11:53.320 like Bible study group and we were like at the park together.
00:11:57.460 And I remember looking around at the people I was sitting with and just kind
00:12:01.560 of having this moment of knowing that I was going to lose my entire community
00:12:07.080 because I knew I was queer.
00:12:08.700 and just kind of you know sitting with the terror that that brings of like everything I've known is
00:12:16.520 going to change everything I everyone I've connected with everyone I've made a relationship
00:12:21.480 with is going to be gone in my life and like what does that mean for me and you know kind of even
00:12:27.560 made me think like I might even lose my family you know and so it really kind of put me into
00:12:34.600 this place of like okay well if that's what's going to happen like I'm gonna have to find a
00:12:40.120 way to survive I'm gonna have to find a way to make community find people like me and and you
00:12:49.360 know and this was even before I like started to practice magic and be identifying as a witch
00:12:55.180 because that's I think also kind of brought another level where you know I think being a
00:13:03.440 which also kind of puts you in this very marginal place.
00:13:06.340 And so, you know, being queer also does that.
00:13:09.000 And, like, I think in a sense I feel very blessed to have had that, like,
00:13:14.040 at a very young age.
00:13:15.380 Like, I have a few queer friends that we talk about, like, queer privilege
00:13:19.680 and queer privilege being that when you go through something like that,
00:13:23.780 yes, it's horrible and it's challenging,
00:13:25.820 and unfortunately some people don't survive that.
00:13:28.300 But those who do, we have that blessing that we're kind of like,
00:13:31.780 we can let it all go in one second we don't care we'll start all over again you know and that is a
00:13:37.380 very powerful like gift to have that you kind of know that you can build up from the ground up
00:13:43.000 again you could find community wherever you are you can create community and yeah and so kind of
00:13:49.680 I think that's been a big kind of gift that I've had that has really allowed me to step into the
00:13:54.120 world of being a witch and working with other witches because it's still to this day like my
00:13:58.980 family very much accepts me for being queer now but i think the witch part of my life now
00:14:03.300 is a little marginalizing for them and especially for i have a brother who like
00:14:07.660 is completely against it and he's very christian and thinks that i'm going you know i'm gonna get
00:14:13.360 get like demons coming to visit me or whatever like so that yeah it can be really scary for
00:14:20.120 people like us and then because of that fear it's pretty hard to sit down and wrap your head around
00:14:25.760 some pretty complex concepts that might make it less scary um yeah it's funny that's such an
00:14:33.520 interesting idea about queer privilege i i relate to it in this one like very particular not the
00:14:40.700 same sense but i i was in chronic pain for 10 years and um like one day i wasn't and i've always
00:14:49.820 thought that like that that period gave me so much power um because because I had to learn how to
00:14:58.520 function in in pain and like still have a life and get work done and also I I can always compare
00:15:07.900 like I always have this reference point for like functioning in pain and functioning not in pain
00:15:14.040 and knowing no i don't know somehow having that boundary having that that dark and light inside
00:15:20.760 of me that i i think that fuels me in a in a lot of different ways and i think that's something
00:15:27.260 that's really powerful about which is is understanding the power of the light and the
00:15:32.380 dark not being afraid of the dark not seeing the dark as a negative thing but as part of the system
00:15:38.200 right like part of life part of the light and kind of connecting with both of them i think
00:15:43.740 i think that's been a big kind of thing that's come up in kind of my relationship with my younger
00:15:48.780 brother like i think he sees the dark as really bad negative and you shouldn't connect with it
00:15:54.820 and i think that obviously as we know that's rooted in like colonization and misogyny
00:15:59.560 and anti-indigeneity there's so much that's connected to why we you know see the darkness
00:16:05.880 as bad obviously like anti-blackness there's so much there then i think witches are really kind
00:16:11.500 of destabilizing the narratives of the paradigms that really get constructed around this like
00:16:18.240 false dichotomy yeah completely um can you talk about more about how you build community what
00:16:28.920 and maybe like how how that's different in Tulsa compared to LA or Portland
00:16:33.800 yeah um yeah so I think you know building community is definitely like an ongoing
00:16:40.400 project um and it's it's been you know it's definitely been different here than it has been
00:16:50.100 in other cities um in Tulsa I would say there are lots of folks who are interested in mysticism
00:16:56.820 and magic and in art and kind of creating change through cultural or social practice
00:17:02.680 and that's been really exciting and then at the same time I've also gotten a lot of pushback and
00:17:09.140 there's even been like an artist here who like has said that i've been i'm being persecuted for
00:17:14.200 my religion which i find really interesting um like an interesting way of thinking about it
00:17:18.480 and one of the reasons they brought that up is because i you know in organizing this golden dome
00:17:22.860 series i was supposed to work with an organization here and they were like you know totally gung-ho
00:17:28.620 and we're working for months on it but then you know once some like white cis men looked at what
00:17:34.100 we were doing they like immediately were like no this is not appropriate and you know and it's
00:17:40.700 and in a way like I had worked really hard to try to not make my language sound witchy to kind of
00:17:45.720 put it within like institutional context you know right um and also you know and also in other ways
00:17:52.360 too I've had people come to my studio both be like super excited and really love what I'm doing and
00:17:58.660 I've met a lot of people that like were excited about my practice.
00:18:02.560 And then I've also had folks come who see my work and they literally like
00:18:06.580 won't let their children come into my studio or they've asked me if I'm a
00:18:11.180 witch or they've asked me if I'm a cross dresser or like, you know,
00:18:14.260 different like ways that I'm seeing my work as being perceived.
00:18:18.440 And that's like, you know,
00:18:19.140 it's definitely made me realize like the power of my presence here,
00:18:22.560 the power of my presence in this state and in this town,
00:18:25.800 Just knowing that, you know, they might, you know, some folks might see me as, like, a marginal person or someone that, like, is a threat, but then I always, like, really love the fact that, like, the Tulsa Artists Fellowship is, like, kind of saying that my work is important.
00:18:41.840 Right.
00:18:41.980 They're kind of showing that it's valuable, and that, I think, is kind of shifting people's concepts of what art is or what's valuable.
00:18:51.160 but I think you know I've definitely since I like left the church at a young age I've like
00:18:58.080 kind of constantly been seeking and co-creating community and I've worked in many different ways
00:19:05.140 and I think a big thing that I've kind of really worked with is like finding things to organize
00:19:11.460 around for people has been really powerful and and many times leads to more long-term communities
00:19:18.060 so a lot of my practice has been project-based um for example when i lived in portland oregon
00:19:24.520 i worked on a queer music and arts festival and that brought me so much community and that
00:19:30.680 actually came from feeling really isolated and really alone and so that you know that experience
00:19:37.280 really allowed me to see like art can be a powerful thing for people to organize around
00:19:42.660 in the same way that magic is a powerful thing for people to organize around and also the idea
00:19:50.860 of bringing your gifts as an organizer is sort of an offering to a community that doesn't exist yet
00:19:57.940 yeah it's a way of imagining a community into being i find yes yeah because you have that
00:20:07.720 vision and you have that ability to be like a bridge right to be that elemental person that
00:20:13.280 can kind of work between networks and communities and have that space i think a lot of a lot of
00:20:19.860 event organizing or arts organizing is having faith yes people lose faith and you you hold it
00:20:27.760 and then you make the spreadsheets
00:20:30.600 send those emails yeah um oh i wanted to loop back um because you talked about um people not
00:20:40.260 letting their children come into your studio and then also just i mean i it feels so heightened
00:20:45.420 and so powerful to be and this is maybe just my imagination but to be practicing invited to
00:20:51.980 practice in Tulsa versus in LA where it's so mysticism rich and so so weird rich and and all
00:21:00.580 of that um can you go back and just describe what the studio looks like yeah um so it's a white cube
00:21:11.000 oh perfect that's not weird yeah but you know but within my white cube I've like kind of surrounded
00:21:18.780 it now with like images I've started to print out some of the images that I work on like on
00:21:25.360 Instagram or digitally I also have like images of my like cast shows up because I do get like
00:21:33.620 studio visitors like curators or artists who are interested to come see my work and so I've kind
00:21:40.220 of created like a tapestry of like projects up online and I also have a little area that's kind
00:21:45.700 of my production studio space it's very like diy and kind of um yeah it's it's basically like like
00:21:54.480 a green screen area where i like work on projects um yeah and and i have like a table you know where
00:22:01.740 i think a lot of my practice and a lot of what's helped me become an artist and you kind of brought
00:22:05.920 this up earlier around being an organizer is accepting that like there are times as an artist
00:22:11.220 that I get to like play and like spin around with fabric and like color my face and do all
00:22:17.060 these things that are really enjoyable. But then a large part of my practice is like sending emails
00:22:21.860 and organizing and like, like, you know, kind of making sure that I'm creating that structure to
00:22:27.140 play in. Totally. Um, okay. So I have to ask Amy's question. She, she's so excited to talk to you
00:22:35.900 And she'd be freaking out right now telling you about her green screen bodysuit and how one time for a music video, I think I was dressed up in it and we were shooting, crawling around so she could project on it.
00:22:50.460 I think also her 80-year-old father wore it for a period because he was full of magic and down for creativity.
00:23:02.260 But I have to.
00:23:02.760 Such a blessing.
00:23:03.360 Oh, my God.
00:23:04.520 Yeah.
00:23:04.720 I have to ask you, GIF or JIF?
00:23:12.200 You know, that is like, I think, the modern day, I don't know.
00:23:18.480 I've heard it in different ways, and I've even quote unquote heard that the originator
00:23:22.780 of it calls it a JIF, but I also, most people I know say GIF.
00:23:29.320 Yeah, what do you do?
00:23:30.500 We're going to go with whatever you do, we decided.
00:23:32.440 you know i usually say gif just because i go with what most folks say um even if it is gif but i
00:23:42.760 also you know i try not to be too like i guess tied to to you know being someone who's bilingual
00:23:49.640 and has kind of had challenges around like syntax and definitions of words like i try
00:23:58.500 to to leave it open and be like you know what yes it is a gif today you know right i love that
00:24:05.660 i i i'm also someone who's much more comfortable in the like hazy middle of things you know it's
00:24:12.160 fine it's fine it's both guys it's okay and i have been saying cultures right where like those
00:24:18.000 speak more than one language like have that like intermingling languages like i think
00:24:22.720 it makes me think of that like quote-unquote debate that there is around like does like an
00:24:28.440 evolution of language like let's say like people who are bilingual and start to speak in both
00:24:34.460 languages and kind of like quote-unquote butcher both languages is that like some people see that
00:24:40.140 as a beautiful evolution that's happening right and others are like no there's like the original
00:24:45.220 thing and we have to stick to it and you know I guess you can kind of think about that with magic
00:24:50.180 and like the way that magic and spirituality is evolving so much and that to me is so exciting
00:24:56.560 that people are really yeah like really taking on magic and allowing their intuition to really
00:25:03.140 guide them that to me is something that's really exciting about what i see happening in the world
00:25:07.160 of witchcraft and magic oh me too i'm happy to hear you say that because that's always our
00:25:12.380 when since we started practicing and we really were practicing together we were just like i 0.97
00:25:18.400 don't know man i'm just gonna make this shit up like it just has to be something we make up we 0.95
00:25:23.420 we were, we were, we were playing music together. 0.95
00:25:25.700 We were making art together and we needed ritual, you know, um,
00:25:29.740 and, and we really believe in, I mean,
00:25:33.280 it's given us incredible gifts and the most incredible of the world is this
00:25:37.700 podcast, but I really believe in that. Like,
00:25:41.300 and I guess maybe it does have something to do with,
00:25:43.600 with both living in a bilingual place where it feels like, you know,
00:25:48.040 language and, and the possibilities of culture being made up all the time.
00:25:53.420 yeah yeah definitely hadn't thought of it that way yeah can you talk about um you mentioned um
00:26:02.600 a rhizomatic thematic or approach to the work that you're working on and I definitely feel
00:26:10.180 so connected to these internet empowered spells that you craft does the do those can you talk
00:26:18.500 about rhizome and roots and how you use the internet to make magic yeah um yeah so i would
00:26:27.500 say the rhizome like i'm really interested in the rhizome as a structure you know um and i don't
00:26:32.860 know much about rhizomes biologically and that's a big part of why i did this project is you know
00:26:38.220 part of what i'm interested in with the rhizome is like the destabilization of hierarchical
00:26:42.420 structures and part of me wanting to work on this project was me being like honest of like i don't
00:26:48.100 know much about the rhizome but i want to learn more and i maybe don't want to learn more in a
00:26:52.900 pedagogical or like kind of top-down way i want to learn more through experience and by collaborating
00:26:58.340 with people so much more appropriate to the theme too yes yeah and so like even like our first event
00:27:06.420 that we had someone asked me like a very specific question about rhizomes and i had to be like i
00:27:10.940 don't know like i actually like i'm not an expert whatsoever um but i'm interested in like networks
00:27:17.240 and alternative systems and and and I think you know that's kind of connected a lot to
00:27:24.820 my work on the web is you know as you talked about I definitely feel like for a long time
00:27:31.160 I did feel super isolated and I felt like I had no community but then I started to find these
00:27:36.280 you know divine gems of people like these angels that came to me at the right time and that is what
00:27:43.100 really started to give me more confidence in my voice and in my perception and my visions and my
00:27:48.100 downloads. And then, you know, through the beauty of the web, I've been able to really craft like a
00:27:56.600 global network of people and feel like I'm connected beyond time and space. And, you know,
00:28:03.500 this kind of also makes me think a lot about a big part of my practice recently has been connecting
00:28:09.340 with ancestors especially ancestors that have been marginalized or excluded because of colonialist
00:28:16.960 and capitalist system so that to me is also another way of like kind of destabilizing
00:28:22.580 time destabilizing these like limited linear concepts that were told you know from a very
00:28:30.740 young age and and i really see a lot of people doing that with their practice and also with the
00:28:36.080 web of kind of saying like okay maybe I live in a part of the country that is isolated but
00:28:42.960 through this beautiful portal I'm able to feel super connected and build an entire life out of
00:28:49.760 it you know build an entire like network of people and I've seen so many folks like so many people
00:28:56.040 within my communities who have gone from like I have a job that I really hate but I'm also like
00:29:01.940 a mistake where I'm an artist from this like visionary who has a dream of creating this
00:29:06.500 project and all of a sudden they're like moving more and more towards that and will be building
00:29:11.780 that where it becomes their life practice and I think that's also a gift that the web is giving
00:29:18.640 us is that it's destabilizing labor and destabilizing what we see as our roles within a consumer
00:29:27.860 system that we can really diversify ourselves and also allow ourselves to explore things that
00:29:35.280 we're maybe passionate about and maybe things that won't be financially successful but socially
00:29:41.200 or spiritually can be really successful and then sometimes that even leads to financial success
00:29:46.000 you know so I think it's really and I think my work definitely has evolved in communication
00:29:53.060 with this whole system and in communication with the you know the communities and the people
00:29:58.360 involved because I'm inspired daily by people online that I see and I think that you know
00:30:05.480 we're kind of starting as a as a community we're starting to have more global pan-psychic
00:30:11.680 conversations that start to happen and you know a lot of us many times are receiving similar
00:30:17.400 downloads at the same time or like having you know that happens so much where you know I see
00:30:22.660 almost like it's like that collective consciousness being brought forth and represented you know on
00:30:29.240 on the internet like in that and i think that the internet is also allowing us to communicate
00:30:34.320 way more telepathically than ever before as well
00:30:37.920 yeah i think you're right it's so strange sometimes i think i i well i remember first
00:30:47.040 learning how to use um softwares to make art to make video art or visual art or whatever
00:30:52.580 or to work on a website and I had this theory and it's always played out okay for me that like
00:30:58.680 if I can't get a software to do something um it's because I should be doing something else
00:31:04.020 and it always has led to like very strange and interesting you know choices and I um I feel like
00:31:14.300 we get these incredible emails from people like not tons like not like what you're probably getting
00:31:20.580 but we get these messages from the podcast and it just feels like um this thing that we thought
00:31:26.200 we were kind of alone in wondering about or or this this sort of work that we wanted to do this
00:31:34.180 like really nerdy feminist occult history thing that we wanted to do that there's like these waves 0.97
00:31:38.800 of people who who want that exact thing you know who wanted to have this exact same conversation
00:31:44.280 and that's so exciting yeah it definitely and you know what you just said reminds me of when i was
00:31:52.700 younger and really kind of getting into contemporary art and into like philosophy or psychology i
00:31:59.540 remember reading about you know some of the like let's say seminal figures within those worlds and
00:32:05.580 and just thinking about like the legacy and what happens after we die and like also i guess this
00:32:12.380 connects to the imperceptible like webs that tie us together and how you know let's just say like
00:32:23.220 for example we were just talking about like looking into a certain history like the energy
00:32:28.560 of these people that were maybe like not allowed to share their story or you know there's there's
00:32:34.520 ways that that energy is felt and that we like pick it up and and that we become in many ways
00:32:40.580 like the inheritors of certain energies and that we kind of keep that fire going and i definitely
00:32:46.680 see witchcraft as being that like it's definitely a lineage um and that you know this lineage has
00:32:53.220 been tried to be stamped out many times but i think it's something that exists beyond time
00:32:59.360 and space and it also exists beyond lifetimes too and i feel like even us at this point like
00:33:05.120 we are leaving remnants behind for the future as well right like we're kind of we're crafting
00:33:11.560 something that's going to impact you know whatever civilizations are able to like access this in the
00:33:17.320 future it's it's definitely a part of this like this lineage that is moving through us so i'm not
00:33:23.640 surprised that when you're working on a project that you feel is like a cult or like kind of
00:33:28.320 specific that there are people beyond time and space and even present to this day that are really
00:33:33.740 excited about that and that you know whenever whenever you cast a spell that spell brings
00:33:40.380 something back to you you know it's always like an echo and a response you know yeah are there
00:33:46.280 things you do or rituals you do or spells you cast to help yourself receive those downloads
00:33:55.500 or hear those ancestors yes um i definitely i have a divination practice
00:34:04.420 that i work with a lot i do a lot of scrying work i scry with water and with obsidian
00:34:12.900 and i and i also i would say kind of do a lot of what you would call spontaneous divination where
00:34:19.340 you know there's so many moments i feel like you know we're living in a society where your
00:34:24.720 attention gets drawn out of your body so much right and there's moments where you get that
00:34:30.360 little tingling of like there's something here right now and if I'm able to I'll take a moment
00:34:36.720 to just turn inside and really connect and I feel like that practice has been so powerful in helping
00:34:43.840 me you know kind of be present and available because there's moments where that information
00:34:49.020 comes through and you know the ancestor or the guide or the spirit that's wanting to speak to
00:34:55.320 you like they don't care about what's happening on the terrestrial realm you know like they have a
00:34:59.360 message for you and and i think you know really crafting space for that is super important but
00:35:05.120 then of course that's also a luxury within you know late stage capitalism it's we're not really
00:35:10.420 kind of told that we're allowed to have that type of space to be like i'm gonna spend some time in
00:35:15.340 altered consciousness right now like it's not really encouraged so kind of crafting that for
00:35:21.600 myself has been so important yeah i remember feeling like there was this vast wall or space
00:35:33.680 between what i thought on the inside and the voices that came up internally and things i
00:35:41.060 wanted to write and the things that like were really there that my inner world and what I could
00:35:47.440 the few things I could kind of push through that to get to the outer world you know and I feel like
00:35:53.880 the years in between have been like uh different ways of you know maybe first I was trying to crack
00:36:02.020 it or beat it down and then sort of dissolving it and then realizing that I could just sort of
00:36:07.460 let things through but but that so much of that i think is conditioning like you know performing
00:36:13.040 trying to perform in a way that will for me it was approval like how can i how can i be acceptable
00:36:18.660 and did you have things that like helped you kind of dissolve that or break down that process
00:36:25.240 yeah ritual helps um allowing allowing um you know i think we're lucky like you said to have
00:36:36.920 been exposed to art um at a young age that and that there's people who made lives out of inventing
00:36:44.460 worlds and of dissolving that that performance or whatever it is um when you're talking about
00:36:53.600 your first spiritual experience in a way of going to that modern art museum made me remember my
00:37:00.060 first one which was going i had grown up in um waterloo ontario so it's kind of like small sort
00:37:06.700 of suburb city. And then we moved to California and my parents took me to the Redwoods. And
00:37:15.060 it was very much my first spiritual experience, even though, you know, I had been in churches
00:37:21.040 a lot, but nothing ever happened there. I mean, it could be nice. It could be very nice,
00:37:28.980 but nothing like this, you know? And I, yeah, the woods, the woods dissolve it in a way
00:37:35.260 where i don't have to beat it down i know and i think what's beautiful about redwoods is that
00:37:40.900 they are very much a mycelial rhizomatic structure you know they grow in community and that and i
00:37:48.660 think that even of itself is such an affront to the you know the mechanistic system that that i
00:37:55.820 definitely have many downloads around redwoods really yes they're such powerful conduits and
00:38:03.200 they're so like i think protective too and that protection really allows one to open up and i
00:38:09.800 think that's also like something that i've noticed is living in cities and being around
00:38:14.440 like industry and different things that like your your psychic abilities really move closer to your
00:38:21.740 body because you have to protect yourself energetically to live in cities many times
00:38:26.600 and so when you're out in nature and surrounded by protective energy and also quiet
00:38:32.240 and systems that are not like industrial like your your energy bodies like just open up in ways that
00:38:40.800 are not really possible when you have to protect yourself constantly yeah that's so true and also
00:38:47.100 so interesting to think about the sort of flip side of that power of being in a city and bringing
00:38:53.640 your energy really close and and does that condense it in a way you know yeah definitely
00:39:00.360 yeah it transforms it yeah yeah um my other one is is is swimming in a lake you know total total
00:39:11.720 deep deep swimming down as deep as i can total immersion um feeling how but also it's dangerous
00:39:18.480 you know you have to come back up yeah yeah yeah and so that and that's like a moment for you where
00:39:26.680 you're also able to really like tap into something yeah yeah water water is definitely
00:39:35.240 a powerful conduit and i think that that's yeah why i i've worked a lot with divination practices
00:39:41.080 with water i think water is like a incredible portal and also the history that is in water is
00:39:48.680 so powerful it's the history of the whole planet of all of space it's been everywhere
00:39:55.260 it's carrying everything yeah another way of thinking about a rhizome i guess right
00:40:01.160 it's sort of on a cellular level it's all moving through yes it's all rhizomes
00:40:06.640 i know i think i think a lot of times like our like scientific systems are nowhere near
00:40:17.600 like advanced enough to really understand the interconnectedness of everything
00:40:22.920 like it's beyond our comprehension at this point but i think mystics you know are really
00:40:29.900 able to kind of understand it or at least like kind of get a sense of it you know yeah
00:40:36.280 can you give us more insight into your your divination practice with water if someone wanted
00:40:43.080 to after this podcast go try something what would that look like yeah um so so what i do you know
00:40:51.980 it's very much, it's ceremonial, and I think there's different steps, but I definitely would
00:40:57.380 say protection is very key in doing divination work, because you are opening up your consciousness
00:41:02.720 to allow, you know, yourself to kind of be open to messages that want to move through water,
00:41:08.040 or move through a medium, and so squaring, you know, mint times, you work with a medium,
00:41:12.800 and when I work with water, it's usually in a bowl, and I usually work with a black bowl, 0.98
00:41:17.600 um or but you don't have to that's I just I prefer sometimes to work with a black boy like
00:41:23.660 helps me facilitate the process or um Eliza Swan actually taught me a really beautiful technique
00:41:29.460 of pouring ink into water as well um and so you sit um so you I would say I always start by
00:41:37.220 invoking protection connecting myself to the earth as a protective ally and then also invoking
00:41:46.620 guides to be present with you and something that i really suggest to people in doing this work is
00:41:53.760 if you're ever visited by a spirit or some entity comes and wants to communicate with you
00:42:00.280 it's always important to ask them if they have your highest purpose in mind
00:42:05.460 because you know sometimes you can be in contact with spirits who don't have your highest purpose
00:42:12.260 in mind and so if they don't respond or if they don't immediately say yes you cast them away you
00:42:18.340 have them leave and but if they do say yes then you're kind of able to move forward and commune
00:42:23.940 with them um and the reason i bring that up is because i have had experiences in doing this type
00:42:30.040 of work where i've had like what i would maybe call like disembodied energies come forward
00:42:35.520 or like energies that are just wanting like your presence or your energy and they're you know and
00:42:42.280 not to say that they're malicious energies but they're more like energies that are needing that
00:42:46.780 from you but that's not necessarily going to support what you're wanting to do and so i um
00:42:53.040 i actually had this happen when i was working with obsidian because obsidian is i would say a little
00:42:57.300 bit more prone because it's very connected to like um death energy ancestral energy and i had
00:43:05.440 this happen and you know being a witch i like kind of knew what to do you know so i cast it out i
00:43:12.380 like protected myself and then i moved forward and i was able to have a really beautiful experience
00:43:16.980 after that um but then interestingly enough like a few days later i ran into an artist who you know
00:43:24.300 as we were talking about earlier like was also happened to be working with obsidian and happened
00:43:30.680 to be also doing divination work and also had a disembodied energy come forward for them
00:43:37.260 and they were so scared that um their roommate actually thought they were having like a psychotic
00:43:44.400 break and they were even like gonna call like a pet team or like you know and thankfully that
00:43:50.160 none of that happened but like that really made me realize like it's super important for people
00:43:54.640 to know that this stuff can happen and to normalize it in a sense to just say like that's
00:43:59.040 like something that's part of the process sometimes and like so that folks don't move
00:44:03.040 into that place of like am I losing my mind like because you know that's a whole other conversation
00:44:08.080 but like our our systems like you know emphasis on logic and linear ways of thinking lots of times
00:44:15.040 doesn't allow people to break out of that and to really understand that there's times where you
00:44:20.580 know we do enter into altered states or into states of consciousness that are not like what
00:44:26.780 we're told is quote-unquote normal and that that's very normal you know to like enter into these
00:44:32.420 altered states and i wish that there was more education and conversation around this and so
00:44:39.040 empowering to know that you can just say you have no power here yes you can you you're okay you're
00:44:48.940 in charge you can just say that that's okay and also that's great life advice for when you're
00:44:53.800 dealing with embodied people also who sometimes you can listen to you know your inner energy and
00:45:01.860 know that maybe they don't have your highest purpose in mind and you can tell them they have
00:45:06.340 no power there and you can do that with your mom if you need to you know that's okay too
00:45:12.060 thank you for making that connection
00:45:15.620 yes and i think that's why like i think a lot of what is scary for this the patriarchal system
00:45:25.540 about witchcraft is that a lot of it is about inner power and inner intuition yes and that is
00:45:32.780 a complete and not incomplete opposition to what the system tells us right that we have to turn to
00:45:38.160 like an authority figure to tell us what's right or wrong yeah yes yes yes yes so much deep yes
00:45:48.760 um can we talk about hope because you know you do so much work um i follow all of your
00:46:02.540 your posts and you do so much work to to creatively dismantle violence and dismantle
00:46:10.060 these systems of capitalism and patriarchy and you know we live in a world with with fascist
00:46:16.880 leadership and it can be so hard i mean i'm looking out at this like beautiful gray rainy day
00:46:24.100 and i'm talking to you and i feel full of hope but that's because i feel like you're like just
00:46:29.180 grooming with it um do you have ways that you that you sustain yourself that you keep your own cup
00:46:35.000 full um yeah there's many ways um and i think about the power of narrative the power of the
00:46:45.460 stories that i tell myself um and i feel like there's a deep connection between hope and
00:46:51.140 hopelessness um where you know my hope comes from my hopelessness like it's deeply interwoven with
00:46:58.960 it um and you know a story i like i like there was a specific moment where i like really like
00:47:06.580 this all came forward to me in the therapy session actually where i you know i was struggling i was
00:47:13.020 working a job i didn't like and i i had this you know wanting to be an artist but like being like
00:47:18.680 but i have to make rent and you know just getting into this spiral and and it was at this time where
00:47:24.560 there was a lot I was living in Oakland and there were a lot of people protesting the like violence
00:47:29.320 from the police and I was just like it was happening in my community and like there's so
00:47:33.860 much going on where I just like I went into my therapy session and I just like all I could think
00:47:39.060 of was like I'm trapped I'm trapped I'm trapped and like that's all I could feel and I just fell
00:47:44.120 home how hopeless how hopeless like and you know it was almost like I felt like an angel came forward
00:47:53.260 and like kind of picked me up from that cage that I saw myself in and really kind of reminded me
00:48:01.280 that I was like a powerful mutant that I was a powerful being and that I was able to craft a
00:48:08.960 reality and that that ability is actually like a narrative that can sustain me it's a narrative
00:48:16.420 that can really be in opposition to this other narrative because it really showed me like
00:48:22.100 there is a tactic behind this narrative being put into you you know there's a reason why
00:48:28.160 the this system wants you to feel hopeless and powerless and so you know kind of it really
00:48:34.820 allowed me to see like okay so this other narrative that i'm crafting that i'm co-creating
00:48:39.920 about myself being a powerful mutant and a powerful witch and that my spells have
00:48:45.320 impact and that I'm co-creating with all these people and I'm not alone and if we are trapped
00:48:52.120 we're all trapped together and we're working on a way to you know forge an exit for ourselves like
00:48:58.140 that to me was so much more of an exciting narrative and so much more of a narrative
00:49:03.580 that I've like kind of decided to really like in some ways dedicate my life to you know like
00:49:08.660 I'm building this narrative with a bunch of other magical mutants and witches around the planet
00:49:14.820 and so I think that's a huge thing that sustains me like I see that narrative as a sanctuary and
00:49:21.600 in many ways like that narrative also produces art practice and produces community engagement
00:49:26.360 and produces conversations with people and so I think that's one way you know like really working
00:49:32.300 with those perceptions and like getting the support and that's why I was in therapy I was
00:49:35.800 like getting the support I needed you know to like to really deal with that hopelessness that's
00:49:40.860 very real um and i think that's also like part of what you know earlier i mentioned like
00:49:46.220 organizing myself like i think i you know now i have the the quote-unquote luxury to like say
00:49:53.900 a lot of my life is built around me co-creating this life of like magic and ceremony and energy
00:50:02.740 work and creative practice and that gives me so much more hope that i've seen myself go from
00:50:08.420 you know wishing I had that wishing I knew how to make that happen to like okay now that's in
00:50:13.700 my life and so I witnessed that like evolution in my own life in just a few years and that also
00:50:20.440 really speaks to me of the power of intention the power of magic and so if I've seen that shift
00:50:26.680 happen in my own life I'm just I know that it's it's happening in so many other people's lives
00:50:32.200 and that the magic that we're all co-creating is going to have even larger effects and and I think
00:50:37.980 is part of like what earlier you brought up around organizing it's like a big part of organizing
00:50:42.420 it's faith right and so there are a lot of things I do for faith you know I you know I definitely
00:50:48.520 have a connection with my ancestors with different guides with different animals so I think those are
00:50:55.000 all the resources I turn to constantly and and I'm not like I would not be here if I wasn't for
00:51:01.300 these guides and these ancestors like they have been with me and I think that's also part of like
00:51:05.960 crafting space of sanctuary in your life to really turn towards these guides turn towards yourself
00:51:12.180 towards your intuition because that is where those gems are too um and those are the ways
00:51:18.840 I feel like you know and this can be done both alone but also with a partner or with friends
00:51:23.760 or in community you know crafting that type of space and so I think yeah like so and you know
00:51:30.040 I think when I was younger like a lot of my life was organized around partying or around
00:51:34.500 sounds like you know maybe wanting to do art but like not knowing having a direction and now
00:51:39.720 I feel like my whole life is organized around like creative practice community building
00:51:45.160 spirituality and healing practices and I think all those things give me so much hope because
00:51:50.660 I've seen already how much they've shifted my life and of those folks around me too
00:51:55.580 but it's definitely a process you know and I'm not going to say that I don't have days where I
00:52:00.600 you know don't feel frustrated or overwhelmed or hopeless and and it's those days that I really
00:52:06.720 like that's sometimes why I post so much or like I'm so prolific online is because
00:52:11.660 those are days where I'm like okay I can't handle this let me work on a photoshop image
00:52:16.260 or like let me make a video about this like how do I reshape this narrative that it's not so
00:52:23.600 painful for me right now you know yeah oh I got chills when you started to talk because I
00:52:30.480 that that is a message that uh a negative message that I come back to over and over and over again
00:52:37.160 in my life and I've talked about it on the podcast that I'm trapped I'm trapped I'm trapped I'm
00:52:41.720 trapped I'm trapped um and it's it's there's different ways that I find to work out of it
00:52:49.000 and so much of it is narrative you know i felt like you were oh sorry you were taking a breath
00:52:55.120 like you were gonna drop no no i was just taking it in what you just said yeah i'm it's it's so
00:53:03.380 painful that like so many of us feel trapped and it's but it also like makes makes so much sense
00:53:10.740 because we are within a system that wants us to that is making us feel that way and that they are
00:53:16.520 trying to make it seem like they're all encompassing you know i love that you said that your your hope
00:53:22.000 in a way comes from your hopelessness that you know if we are all feeling it if we are all feeling
00:53:28.440 that i'm trapped i'm trapped i'm trapped i'm hopeless i'm hopeless i'm hopeless then there's
00:53:31.960 so much more of us than there are of them whoever they are you know there's so much more of us and
00:53:40.300 that has so much power that darkness that hopelessness has so much power yes yes and I
00:53:48.860 think you know making space for that feeling because it is like you know it took me a long
00:53:52.980 time to get to that place where I could admit to myself that that's how I was feeling and it's like
00:53:57.260 not a lot of people avoid feeling that and but I think you know as witches know there's so much
00:54:05.880 power in the darkness in the pain and we can really work with it because you know um
00:54:14.360 I just reminds me of like a witch saying of where there is fear there is power
00:54:20.520 and and I think that that's something that's also really guided me is knowing like move towards fear
00:54:26.520 move towards those things that feel uncomfortable because there's always something to be alchemized
00:54:32.200 from that yeah always um you mentioned the oracle of la amanda we're actually interviewing her this
00:54:41.600 season as well i know we're going to talk about her beautiful new book i wanted to yeah i wanted
00:54:48.840 to ask you if you had one question i should ask her okay let me see
00:54:57.340 if not it's okay we'll cut this out
00:55:01.760 no I it's like you know I like I've had so many conversations with her so I feel like a lot of
00:55:09.940 the things I've wanted to ask her as like a fan of hers and also as a friend of hers
00:55:15.180 well maybe there's maybe there's something you know that I should learn about her or there's
00:55:21.700 a story i should hear i would say ask her about her um her own rituals and what she does to kind
00:55:33.660 of keep hope alive also that's something i would love to know more about from her um i don't know
00:55:40.660 if she'll be open to talking about this but she was telling me about a project she wants to work
00:55:44.860 on in the future that is like so magical and like earth changing and so I don't know if she'd be
00:55:52.020 open to talking about that um yeah she she is one of those witches that I feel gives me hope
00:56:01.480 you know like when I met her it just was one of those moments of like yes and I met her like right
00:56:07.740 when I moved to LA and it was at a it was at a spell casting that she was organizing where we
00:56:14.120 were casting capitalism out of our systems and it was just one of those moments where and it was at
00:56:20.800 an art space and you know she's an artist and so i i just remember meeting her and being like oh my
00:56:26.500 god this is all coming together like this yeah so she definitely is one of those people that gives
00:56:34.300 me hope and like i would say that also for the the huge community of witches in los angeles like
00:56:40.260 they all give me hope there just because there's so many folks there who are organizing and
00:56:47.200 creating realities and and you know I think that that's something that I really miss and something
00:56:53.740 that I'm really glad you know that I'm going back to LA in a couple in next month and that'll be
00:56:59.180 around witches and be around folks who do this work because you know there definitely are a lot
00:57:03.420 of witches here but LA is like a critical mass right now you know yeah it's so interesting to
00:57:10.320 carry that little seed with you plant it for a little bit and then get to go back and get
00:57:15.340 replenished yeah um yeah Amy and I want to go to LA soon maybe it might be next year though
00:57:25.160 next year I think um amazing well we'll have to like co-create something when you're there
00:57:30.240 Oh, yeah, I can't wait. Oh, shivers. I asked you this over Instagram. I hope it's okay to ask you. I'll cut it out if you don't feel up for it. But I feel like you're already on the verge of casting a spell over our listeners. And I wondered if you would finish this podcast with a meditation or a message or a spell for us that we can carry forward today.
00:58:00.240 Yes, I'll kind of share a spell that I feel like I tap into a lot. And it's been like a very transformative spell that helps me whenever I'm feeling like scared or alone or disconnected.
00:58:17.000 um and so and it's also a spell that you could do you could be really like intentional and spend
00:58:25.280 like 10 minutes doing it or you can do it in like a split second and i think that's something i
00:58:30.720 really appreciate about this spell and so um for the spell if i'm able to i'll close my eyes
00:58:37.140 and then i turn inward and i say divine within me or you could say goddess within me spirit within me
00:58:44.120 and then you imagine your energy moving down into the earth you say earth beneath me then you
00:58:51.120 imagine your energy moving up into the heavens you say sky above me and then you say love surround
00:58:58.260 me and you imagine this like love enveloping you in this gorgeous org of energy and then i love to
00:59:07.140 do this for the planet and even for the solar system or for the universe as a whole you say
00:59:13.640 you know same divine within us and you imagine the divine within yourself and also within all
00:59:18.640 the beings that surround you earth beneath us you imagine the earth beneath everyone sky above us
00:59:25.280 love surround us and then at this point i love to just envision an orb of energy surrounding the
00:59:31.700 entire earth the entire solar system or the universe and so really imbuing a protective
00:59:39.160 loving energy that it just will surround wherever you are and I think this is something as I said
00:59:46.200 you could kind of you know really stretch it out really let yourself kind of move into the
00:59:51.500 visualizations of it that can be really powerful or if you're you know really needing it there's
00:59:57.360 many times I've you know been on public transit or something like that I've just realized like
01:00:02.080 I need a protection spell and I that's when I go to constantly just to kind of surround myself with
01:00:08.100 love that's so beautiful thank you and thank you thank you so much for your time and your
01:00:15.860 generosity today yeah thank you so much for having me I'm so grateful I know I'm also you know in all
01:00:23.500 the work that you and Amy are doing and I just I want to just send my love to both of you and to
01:00:30.040 your communities in Ontario and all over the globe too you know because I know a lot of people listen
01:00:34.700 to your podcast from all over um yeah so much love from oklahoma uh and i'll leave you with
01:00:41.740 this ridiculous and wonderful image i live in the woods in quebec as soon as amy north of
01:00:48.020 north of montreal and i have a 10 month old and she only naps in the stroller or on the boob right
01:00:55.120 now so i was walking her around the lake and she fell asleep and i parked her in front of this
01:01:01.100 old trailer that we have that we're fixing up and then uh I heard in my head your um visualize it
01:01:11.140 raining in the Amazon chant and then I danced around this lot with all of these you know wild
01:01:19.800 blueberries and mosquitoes and just like danced it out chanting it quietly under my breath until
01:01:26.520 the baby woke up and it was really fun and also really emotional and I thought of you
01:01:32.840 oh my gosh thank you so much for sharing that we saw I really appreciate that
01:01:38.600 oh my gosh yeah that's to me like that's rhizomatic magic right there right
01:01:46.580 and if you've ever wanted a visceral experience of how difficult and impossible it actually is
01:01:55.880 to fight a rhizome plant some oregano in your garden three years later try to get it out
01:02:02.320 you're not going to and that is the power of us all 0.73
01:02:06.180 okay i gotta go the baby's here she needs the boob
01:02:13.680 okay have a beautiful day you too so much love i can't wait to hug you in person one day soon
