00:00:00.000 i don't know why i'm doing our theme music here we go it's rowan and pine
00:00:11.420 aren't aren't you guys so grateful that we just got some royalty free music online and
00:00:17.840 didn't sing our own theme song it would have been so bad if we were singing the song
00:00:25.380 my name is neve and that's emily and welcome to rowan and pine
00:00:30.260 beautiful it's just bad harmonies and everything yeah with some random guitar in the background
00:00:38.140 that i can't play it would just be off it would not match the like singing at all definitely not
00:00:44.060 it would be so wonderful yeah you're welcome you are welcome and you're actually welcome
00:00:50.980 to Ronan Pine. Yeah, welcome to Ronan Pine. My name is Emily. And my name is Niamh. And
00:00:55.780 it's December. And it's December and we're making a podcast. When did we first start
00:01:00.340 recording this? Was it in like May? I think so. Or June? I think we started recording
00:01:05.000 in May and I think we didn't release anything until June. Look at us go. Yeah, look at us.
00:01:09.920 Hey. We've actually, let's see if we can make it a year. It'll be pretty impressive. That'd
00:01:14.360 be great. Yeah, I'm making my audacity small so I don't just have to look at the sound
00:01:19.560 bar and i can actually just look at you because this is an emily episode neve doesn't have to
00:01:24.380 read fuck all yay i have to read all i don't know who would have thought like back in school when 0.91
00:01:32.680 they were going around the room making you read out like random lines that this is what we were 0.98
00:01:36.200 training for emily yeah for real reading aloud yeah and like researching and stuff although to
00:01:41.160 be honest my favorite part of school projects was always researching yeah same here and then like 0.62
00:01:46.780 telling people who don't really give a fuck all the stuff that you found yeah and you're like no
00:01:50.020 this is cool you're like yeah being like did you know everybody's like I don't care I was just 0.90
00:01:56.580 gonna say is there anything worse than telling somebody a fact that you just found out and they
00:02:00.900 either don't care or they already knew just do the polite thing and pretend and you're very excited
00:02:05.720 about it just be like oh my god that's amazing yeah pretend you're talking to a three-year-old
00:02:10.520 and just say wow that's so cool was there like a meme a while ago it's like no matter who you are
00:02:16.280 what station of life that you're at if a toddler hands you a toy phone you have to pretend you're
00:02:22.260 having a conversation with somebody and it's so true yeah but if they hand you food with their
00:02:28.480 sticky poop fingers you can reject it or something they've already chewed we're not baby birds okay
00:02:33.840 it's very sweet but i i feel so bad when kids are like here you want some i'm like no i'm very full
00:02:40.800 I cannot eat anything else.
00:02:42.880 I had some like air pie earlier.
00:02:45.120 It was amazing.
00:02:45.780 And especially like all the years of being a nanny.
00:02:48.020 I'm like, I see where you put your hands.
00:02:50.120 You will not be touching my food.
00:02:54.420 I was just going to say some people never grow out of that because you see people at
00:02:57.760 like the supermarket with just their hands doing their trousers and just like, you're
00:03:01.120 in public. 0.99
00:03:01.700 Disgusting. 0.99
00:03:02.560 And bad children don't get presents from Santa. 1.00
00:03:06.920 Oh, shit. 1.00
00:03:07.980 Oh, snap. 1.00
00:03:08.660 I'm so good at these segues, transitions.
00:03:13.460 Yeah, so tell us about the children and about Santa and about presents.
00:03:17.760 We like presents.
00:03:18.520 We do like presents.
00:03:20.040 The characters that I'm going to be talking about today are...
00:03:23.340 I wrote them as Santa Claus-like characters because it's like they're similarities, but they're not the same.
00:03:30.240 Santa adjacent.
00:03:31.160 Santa adjacent.
00:03:32.000 So I have in Russia, there's the...
00:03:35.140 Forgive me.
00:03:35.800 just yeah up at the top of this episode i really want to i want to say and really stress that
00:03:42.460 there's a lot of languages in here that i don't speak and try to get the pronunciation as accurate
00:03:48.200 as possible but i don't speak these languages so it might not come out that well but i'm gonna try
00:03:53.780 and if you have a correction just send it to us on instagram in a voice clip just shouting
00:03:58.100 whatever it's supposed to be with no context whatsoever and we'll try and figure out what
00:04:01.620 the hell you're talking about that'd be fun that would be really fun i'd be like wait i think i
00:04:06.620 talked about this at one point so yeah these are santa claus like characters i have the in russia
00:04:12.300 the zed moros see if that's russian yeah in iceland there are the yola svenar they're also
00:04:19.780 known as the yule lads yes lad in italy we have la befana and then everybody's favorite krampus
00:04:29.060 yes so these are the characters that i'm going to be talking about today have you heard of any
00:04:33.860 of these other than krampus i only heard of labafana because you texted to me and said that
00:04:39.180 you were thinking about doing an episode of labafana i was like i don't know what that is
00:04:43.220 but yes please but no the yule lads never heard of and that other one the russian thing that i
00:04:49.520 don't know how to say never heard of that either tell me more demon coming in hot this throat
00:04:55.680 demon has arrived so our first guy is actually the most like santa claus zed moros in russia
00:05:03.600 it translates to grandfather frost oh that's cool i like that the roots are in slavic mythology
00:05:10.880 during the soviet era communist authorities banned zed moros but he later became an important
00:05:17.620 part of soviet culture which is pretty interesting instead of giving gifts on christmas eve he gives
00:05:24.260 gifts on new year's eve so you have a little extended fun if you also believe in santa claus
00:05:29.440 cool so if you're like you grew up with like say one russian parent you might like that would be
00:05:34.740 cool if you got like two sets of presents right like if you live in the u.s and your parents
00:05:39.980 russian and they're like no we have this guy you guys have santa although i feel like with it's
00:05:46.700 been memed to absolute death but with how harsh russian values are always portrayed to be i feel
00:05:53.100 like the presents from Zed Moros would be whole practical stuff like a hammer boots for the snow
00:06:00.340 a scraper for your car very practical you can't even imagine you're not allowed a toy
00:06:07.440 you get coal but it is a good thing yeah this will warm your house
00:06:11.440 you get coal so grandma does not die I'm sorry Russia we love you we don't love your leader as
00:06:19.120 much oh sorry this is only from a tiktok source so like probably not true me and my tiktok sources
00:06:26.320 uh somebody made a video earlier to say that uh there's a video of putting put putting
00:06:30.640 a body like pudding
00:06:34.120 there's a video of putin falling downstairs and shitting himself yeah apparently this is recent 0.92
00:06:41.680 and now they're calling him putin oh my goodness that is pretty funny i'm not going to verify
00:06:49.060 this because i want to live in the reality where this is real yeah so if it's fake don't tell
00:06:54.020 yeah don't tell us don't ruin the whole mythology of it that's so funny putin have you seen the
00:07:00.420 where he's on a ritz cracker and it's putin on the ritz no somebody made it it's like a gif and
00:07:09.180 it's like the ritz cracker is like a wheel and he's like on it and it's like rolling 0.81
00:07:14.760 said putin on the rip oh my god i love it if he wasn't such like a war criminal um it's really 0.99
00:07:22.060 funny to make fun of him he weren't a terrible person so back to the zed moroz kind of looks
00:07:28.220 like santa he wears a red or blue fur coat that is nearly floor length he has a semi-round fur hat
00:07:34.460 and wears felt boots so like the the semi-round hat i was like semi-round hat it's basically just
00:07:41.660 like a little hat like on top of his head so it like covers the top of his head so it doesn't
00:07:46.060 have like the tail like santa has no okay you all missed it but neve was just like shaking her head
00:07:52.540 around as if i had a santa hat sweeping it flipping that little pom-pom around he is often
00:07:59.600 riding a troika uh basically a sled but it's led by three horses and the horses are like shoulder
00:08:06.380 to shoulder in a line so they're just like straight across and the horses are always all
00:08:11.320 snow white a man of style yeah he's real fancy i like the idea of felt boots and like a long fur 0.58
00:08:18.460 coat he's got the felt boots the fur coat like if he went to a gay club over christmas he would
00:08:24.240 just be absolutely slaying it with his white horses slaying it slightly related and a slight 0.89
00:08:31.740 segue do you know what the irish for santa is i don't daddy nanolog which means daddy christmas 0.93
00:08:38.780 which is also perfect for a gay club yeah there's probably like a drag queen not a drag queen but a 0.87
00:08:46.320 king being daddy christmas somewhere in this country that's amazing but yeah just slay slaying
00:08:52.180 all day yeah the overlap of christmas and queerness is pretty cool in east slavic cultures he's
00:08:59.020 accompanied by snigurashka which translates to snow maiden the snow maiden is his granddaughter
00:09:05.440 and his helper so it's kind of like his little sidekick oh sweet she wears long silver blue
00:09:10.440 robes and a fur cap or a snowflake like crown she has rosy cheeks and a long blonde braid
00:09:16.260 oh she sounds like elsa yeah pretty much maybe elsa was based off this character 0.95
00:09:21.780 yeah like her looks because i think she's based she's based off a that swedish thing is it the
00:09:27.700 Ice? The Ice Queen? 1.00
00:09:29.140 I don't know. 0.85
00:09:29.320 She's based off that Swedish fairy tale.
00:09:30.940 I don't know.
00:09:32.060 I don't know anything about Disney.
00:09:33.460 Let's not attract any Disney adults here.
00:09:35.300 They scare me.
00:09:36.880 Yeah, I'm not.
00:09:37.920 I've heard theories about Disney adults, which is pretty interesting.
00:09:41.800 Oh, really?
00:09:42.360 Yeah, like a lot of childhood trauma, and they probably turned to Disney for comfort,
00:09:46.220 and now it's like into adulthood.
00:09:48.420 I can see that.
00:09:49.340 I've heard that being said about Harry Potter.
00:09:51.000 Yeah, I was like, oh, wow, that actually makes a lot of sense.
00:09:54.200 Yeah.
00:09:55.080 But then some of them are just have no imagination.
00:09:57.700 Like, there's some of them on YouTube, and you're like, you're a Disney adult, but, like, I just feel like you don't know that there are other things to like.
00:10:03.420 You're like, what else would I like?
00:10:05.780 Anything.
00:10:06.860 Anything.
00:10:07.480 Rowan and Pine, maybe.
00:10:08.720 Yeah.
00:10:09.380 Anyway.
00:10:10.440 We're just offending everybody now.
00:10:15.560 We're, like, 10 to 15 minutes into this podcast, and nobody's listening anymore. 1.00
00:10:21.540 We've got the Russians. 0.70
00:10:21.620 We've got a Disney adult. 0.99
00:10:22.940 Who wouldn't just turn this off?
00:10:25.400 Oh, no.
00:10:26.840 We did.
00:10:27.700 putting putin so the origin of zed moraz is from before christianity he was considered a slavic
00:10:37.680 wizard of winter capable of freezing an entire army with a snap of his icy fingers he was denounced
00:10:44.040 as a demon by the church he's said to have icy cold hands so when people dress up as him similar
00:10:49.760 to mall santas they will stick their hands in the snow before meeting children so that it's easy to
00:10:55.160 believe that he is actually just like this icy cold person and that his hands are actually frozen
00:11:00.560 oh my god can you imagine that's a dedication freezing your hands and being like yeah hello
00:11:07.160 children especially in slavic countries because like it's real cold there so i mean but maybe
00:11:12.560 they're used to it i don't know the late 19th century is when he made his way back into christmas 0.81
00:11:17.120 celebrations as the person who brings gifts and goodwill so very similar to santa dead moros and
00:11:25.000 his granddaughter, Snigurashka, are said to live in a small village near Veliki Ustyug
00:11:31.960 in the Vologda region, just a few hours north of Moscow.
00:11:37.640 Yay!
00:11:38.580 Well done for getting through that sentence.
00:11:40.060 Yay!
00:11:40.720 Thank you, everyone.
00:11:42.040 I'll take a bow.
00:11:43.440 Unlike Santa, who lives in an undetermined area of the North Pole, so Santa's secretive, 0.98
00:11:49.300 Zedmaraz is not.
00:11:50.740 He's a good guy.
00:11:51.440 yeah he's just like yeah you should all know that i'm going around giving presents yeah so you can
00:11:56.620 actually visit his house look at my amazing boots that's cool that you can go visit his house
00:12:01.360 yeah i thought that was super cool so you can visit his house and see the toy factory you can
00:12:06.520 see the kitchen where his favorite food is made and his bedroom where he sleeps oh the area so
00:12:11.920 yeah i was like i like saw photos and i was like i want to go yeah i mean there is something a
00:12:18.320 little bit similar like um people take trips to lapland all the time okay um and there's like a
00:12:24.280 little santa's village it's in the arctic circle you can see the northern lights and all that it's
00:12:28.680 like yeah proper arctic circle that would be so much fun yeah that's where i want to take my kids
00:12:33.620 like have to save up our money and then be like we're gonna go see where christmas is made yeah
00:12:39.700 the area surrounding his house is a large enchanted forest with talking magpies siberian reindeer that
00:12:46.900 are actually endangered baba yaga and rides on pechkas or stoves have you heard of stove rides
00:12:53.840 no i don't i was trying to like follow up with this because like i i'm assuming it's like a
00:13:00.180 folktale or something like a horse but it's a stove like as in like a stove that you'd like
00:13:04.920 yes i've never heard of this yeah but i just imagined um do you remember after we're talking
00:13:11.720 about disney adults do you remember in the beauty and the beast when her dad was in this like weird
00:13:17.420 like contraption yeah that he invented yeah and he got like shut in it and then like it like
00:13:22.460 wandered off i kind of imagined something like that it's like oh it's a stove but there's also
00:13:28.720 a large post office next to his house where he receives thousands of letters from children each
00:13:33.220 year oh and apparently russia is still very passionate about zedmaros and think that santa
00:13:38.660 clause is an imposter so so much so that a marketing a marketing specialist in russia
00:13:46.000 tried to sue coca-cola for putting santa in their advertisements in russia oh my god and our boy 0.98
00:13:53.720 putin sided with him too calling it santa propaganda oh for fuck's sake they're like 0.86
00:13:59.760 anti-santa yeah pretty much they don't want santa in in russia apparently that's so funny 0.87
00:14:06.400 i don't think that's everybody but it's um the official stance yeah i think people who are tiny
00:14:12.940 fragile men probably but it's also given me you know that whole phenomenon of like there was like
00:14:17.980 a soviet version of everything and like even now like you and i was talking about a documentary
00:14:23.040 where you know the way parmesan cheese it can only be made in a specific place in italy and it's like
00:14:29.180 it's they're only they're the only place that are allowed to call it parmesan and it's similar to
00:14:34.080 like champagne like you can only make it in the champagne region i did not know this about parmesan
00:14:38.800 cheese but yeah it's called like because i had to do a course on wine um in the place that i used to
00:14:44.460 work and it's called like a a protected domain of origin um it's like an eu thing okay it's also a
00:14:51.520 scotch whiskey you can't make scotch whiskey anywhere but scotland aren't there um aren't
00:14:56.260 there tomatoes grown in italy san marzano ones yes they're grown on the volcano yeah and like
00:15:03.460 nobody else can call their tomatoes that so it's it's that sort of idea so ewan was telling me
00:15:10.360 that because like russia has been such a contentious nation especially over the last
00:15:16.220 like 30 years or so a lot of like european countries were threatening and especially
00:15:20.000 like over the last year were threatening to stop like doing trade with russia so it meant that like
00:15:24.800 they couldn't get parmesan cheese or champagne or anything like that so what the russians started
00:15:29.800 doing was hiring people from all of these regions and paying them an obscene amount of money to
00:15:36.960 make the Russian version of all of these things so they don't need to do trade with these countries
00:15:42.400 is it really worth it so like there's a Russian version of parmesan cheese out there I have 0.64
00:15:48.900 champagne and all that but this is what it's giving me like they made their own Santa but
00:15:55.520 according to russia he was around first yeah they made their own santa and then they were like also
00:16:00.960 we hate coca-cola we'll make our own yeah also fun fact fanta was invented because coca-cola
00:16:08.040 stopped doing trade in germany during world war ii so they decided to make their own drink and
00:16:12.940 they made fanta so fanta is a german company well it's like owned by coca-cola now but it was
00:16:18.560 invented in germany that's so weird that doesn't really sound german to me god this took a segue
00:16:23.400 yeah i mean these are all fun facts yeah these are product origins with me that you didn't ask
00:16:29.260 you thought you were tuning in to stuff about different santa clauses yeah i'm so sorry i keep
00:16:34.900 segwaying you it's okay this next one is the yolas fennar or the yule lads this is going to be a
00:16:43.480 difficult one because there are multiple yule lads and whatever language is spoken in iceland
00:16:50.240 is it called icelandic i think so i think it is if it's not i apologize well it's not like they'll
00:16:56.140 come get you there's only like 30 000 people there so they're like whatever it's not like
00:17:02.480 they can form an army oh no what are they gonna do send bjork poor bjork she's great yeah she's
00:17:09.520 great so the yule lads they're all different names they all have their different names and so i'm
00:17:14.700 going to try to pronounce them as best i can they are 13 mischievous elf-like men who come down from
00:17:20.080 the mountains to visit town on the 13 days leading up to yule for the 13 nights children
00:17:25.380 place a shoe on the windowsill of their bedroom so that the yule lads can place gifts inside the
00:17:30.220 shoe so kind of like setting out stockings for santa claus children who are well behaved will
00:17:36.260 get candy or treats and children who are misbehaving will get a rotten potato in their
00:17:41.080 shoe oh my god oh that's awful the smell of a rotten potato jesus i know wasn't i telling you
00:17:49.220 about how we recently had rotten potatoes in our kitchen yeah and they're like off in a corner
00:17:55.360 where we like weren't really paying attention yeah it was not fun or the worst is when you're
00:18:01.760 not expecting one and you reach in somewhere and you can just feel it i just got chills
00:18:07.500 sorry oh no
00:18:09.900 so the yule lads are part of a family that lives in a cave together the parents of the yule lads
00:18:21.100 are i should probably roll my r's there grila she's the mother le palui is the father
00:18:27.760 and then they have a cat it's the yule cat also pronounced yul caturin we'll call it just the yule
00:18:37.040 cat and the yule cat will eat children who have not received any new clothes to wear for christmas 0.54
00:18:43.040 the mom grilla is a scary troll who is able to sniff out bad children so she can take them back 0.95
00:18:49.780 to the cave with her and turn them into stew the dad is said to be a lazy man he just hangs out in 1.00
00:18:56.680 the cave eats his wife's food chills pets the cat whatever so what the fuck yeah so it's like every 0.99
00:19:02.760 husband on tiktok oh no because they're all useless partly yeah pretty much oh i don't know 1.00
00:19:09.380 how to cook hilarious love it good for you you don't know basic life skills and your wife is 0.98
00:19:16.060 not your mother the yule lads they're usually wearing traditional peasants clothing sheepskin
00:19:20.880 and wool sometimes dressing as santa claus imposters they act like trolls and they're named
00:19:26.860 after the actions that they do such as the doorway sniffer oh my god yes imagine coming home and
00:19:33.700 there's somebody sniffing your doorway it gets better it gets so much better i thought you were
00:19:38.580 gonna say like you know the way for some reason the first place my mind went was like the seven
00:19:42.960 dwarves you know they're all named after attributes so i thought you were gonna like there's a sleepy
00:19:47.160 one but not like slight pervert this could maybe be where the seven dwarves came from because that
00:19:54.520 would make sense considering these are like they're named after the actions that they do
00:19:58.700 and then the seven dwarves are named after their emotions yeah probably what they do the most grumpy 0.84
00:20:03.900 and then doc for like what the fuck was doc smart one they just ran out they're like we don't know 0.73
00:20:09.400 what are other emotions i don't remember if i said it but each like one yule lad will come 0.97
00:20:16.440 each night in the 13 nights leading up to um yule so on december 12th the first yule lad will strike
00:20:25.720 and his name
00:20:27.500 i don't know why you just lean back like a cackle an evil cackle
00:20:33.900 his name is steck yester which is sheep coat clod which i don't understand that either even
00:20:41.740 and that's in English. Sheepcoat clog.
00:20:43.880 It's coat, like, C-O-T-E.
00:20:46.100 He was said to harass sheep,
00:20:48.220 suck milk from them,
00:20:49.580 and was known for having 1.00
00:20:51.760 two stiff peg legs.
00:20:55.680 Listen, buddy. Listen.
00:20:57.640 These Yule lads are something else.
00:21:00.280 Okay. I like feta cheese
00:21:01.900 as much as the next person.
00:21:03.860 Sheep's milk is not where it's at.
00:21:05.300 What are you doing? Breastfeeding off 1.00
00:21:07.400 a sheep, you big weirdo. 1.00
00:21:09.080 You sicko. This sounds like a fetish. 1.00
00:21:11.560 December 13th, our second guy shows up, Gil Yagur, which means gully gawk.
00:21:17.280 He was known to hide in barns and steal the froth from milk buckets.
00:21:22.040 Oh my god.
00:21:23.000 That's kind of like a fairy thing, though. 0.99
00:21:24.520 I feel like fairies do that, so I'm getting fae vibes here. 1.00
00:21:28.580 Fae vibes from the gully gawk. 1.00
00:21:30.020 But that's also, like, you have to be very quick, because the froth's not going to stay there.
00:21:33.680 It's like right after you milk a cow, there's froth.
00:21:36.160 Yeah, he's got to be a fast one.
00:21:38.120 december 14th the stuir which translates to stubby he was known for being unusually short
00:21:45.960 and stealing pans to eat the crust that was left on them or like the crumbs okay
00:21:52.200 okay depending on what it is right if it's like if you're making like a skillet cookie
00:21:59.020 absolutely i'm here for that eat the crust all you want if it's like two-day-old bolognese sauce
00:22:05.340 go home okay like when bacon grease like coagulates
00:22:08.800 oh and it goes like white yes yes that's exactly what i was thinking i'm like that's nasty
00:22:17.900 oh no december 15th lord help me is which translates to spoon liquor oh my god you know
00:22:28.280 what he does he's known for being tall thin and for stealing long wooded spoons to lick them
00:22:34.880 why is it weird that he's tall and thin
00:22:37.040 why is that worse
00:22:37.900 I don't know why that's worse
00:22:39.020 because he's like slender man licking spoons
00:22:41.340 oh my god
00:22:42.380 is this supposed to be a fun tradition
00:22:44.460 Iceland
00:22:44.920 Iceland no
00:22:46.080 Iceland we need to have a little chat
00:22:47.940 Iceland I know you have a weird version of tinder
00:22:50.100 to make sure you're not all related
00:22:51.280 but I feel like there are bigger problems here
00:22:53.140 bigger than cousins procreating
00:22:56.380 on December 16th
00:22:58.340 the potaskevil
00:23:00.580 I'm sorry
00:23:02.140 but when you say that it just sounds like
00:23:04.480 is it nandor who says basquete oh no it's somebody from the original movie he says it
00:23:11.140 basquete that's so funny there's like a word in spanish that like medardo kept saying
00:23:18.680 and it sounds like uh the country that nandor is from oh
00:23:23.060 like medardo like kept saying it i was like all i could think about is nandor
00:23:29.640 But yes, so let me try to like, so the Potaskeviel, he's the pot scraper.
00:23:35.960 He's known to steal leftovers from pots, which sounds very similar to the guy who's eating the crusty stuff off the pots. 0.85
00:23:43.520 Yeah, and also, well, I suppose there's a couple of days in between.
00:23:46.720 So like, the first guy gets there, he gets his little harvest of pots.
00:23:50.940 Yeah.
00:23:51.320 And this guy comes a couple of days later when people have cooked another meal.
00:23:54.340 December 17th is the Ashkaslejkir, is the bowl liquor.
00:23:58.820 he was known to hide under beds and when people would place their askur which is a plate used for
00:24:05.340 all meals he would then steal it and eat from it sounds creepy why are you hiding under my bed
00:24:12.220 waiting for my yeah bowls they're yeah they're weird the next one is like kind of creeps me out
00:24:18.120 so on december 18th the hurla skedlier is the door slammer he's the loudest one he was known
00:24:26.420 to slam doors, especially during
00:24:28.260 night time. Oh, no.
00:24:30.360 I don't like that. I wouldn't like waking up
00:24:32.260 to my doors being slammed. I don't
00:24:34.300 like that. Although, I am thankful that
00:24:36.340 none of these, they all show up one by one.
00:24:38.600 They're not all there. Like, you don't
00:24:40.300 hear a door slam and then there's somebody under your bed
00:24:42.300 like in a plate. That sounds like too much.
00:24:44.360 Somebody in your kitchen scraping pots.
00:24:47.740 That would
00:24:48.340 not be fun. December 19th
00:24:50.200 is the Shkir Gawmer,
00:24:52.220 which is the Shkir Gobbler.
00:24:54.120 Have you ever had Shkir? Oh, like yogurt?
00:24:56.220 yeah it's Icelandic yogurt I love that yogurt I just turned Medardo on to it I was like I've
00:25:01.360 heard this is really good and now it's like the only kind he'll buy oh my god it's amazing so
00:25:05.860 the skier gobbler was known for being obsessed with the Icelandic yogurt okay one last random 0.84
00:25:11.760 like side story um have you seen that there was a famous am I the asshole from reddit of like 0.98
00:25:17.120 this woman that was like am I the asshole my boyfriend's really upset that I got rid of his 0.90
00:25:22.180 property and you're like okay that sounds a bit unreasonable and then she tells the story that 0.99
00:25:26.040 her boyfriend is a collector and he recently reintroduced dairy to his diet and he decided
00:25:31.380 he really likes yogurt so he started collecting yogurt not eating it no just collecting it and
00:25:37.180 keeping it in their apartment and she was like it didn't really bother me and then he bought a
00:25:41.600 second fridge and then he bought a mini fridge to keep in our bedroom so he could keep his yogurt
00:25:45.900 there what and she said the final straw was she went grocery shopping and she came back and there
00:25:52.060 was no room in the fridge for her for their food because he had it full of yogurt and then
00:25:56.340 and then so she like got really mad and she like threw out like a bunch of his yogurt so she could
00:26:01.980 put their food away and he came home and he like went crazy at her he was like you got rid of my
00:26:05.720 property like you had no right to do that and all that and she's like um like i'm starting to feel 0.94
00:26:10.680 really bad that i like got rid of his property like am i the asshole and everyone's like it was 0.99
00:26:15.340 fucking yogurt like it was gonna go off yeah apparently he was it's called the iranian yogurt 0.99
00:26:20.820 am i the asshole so if you look it up and um like part of it was like what some of the yogurt was 0.99
00:26:25.740 like really rare yogurt that he got from iran and she was like how did you get yogurt from iran and 0.97
00:26:30.500 he was like don't ask questions oh my goodness okay so um maybe he's a skir gobbler there's a
00:26:37.520 lot to unpack here it was bad because like she obviously she was feeling bad enough like he'd
00:26:43.520 made her feel so bad about this that she was like maybe i shouldn't have done that he probably is a
00:26:48.200 skier gobbler i would probably have to break up with somebody if they were like that and be like
00:26:53.520 i you know you collect all the yogurt that you want but i won't be part of it yeah and she was
00:26:58.160 like really defensive of him she was like you know like he's a collector but he's not really
00:27:01.500 messy like he's usually really neat and like most of his collections are like he has a room
00:27:06.740 dedicated to them at his parents house in another state and everyone's like um that's a horror yeah
00:27:13.820 and taking over somebody else's house for it come on that's rude please if you're going to collect
00:27:19.420 things don't collect things that are perishable and will attract ants because that's how you get
00:27:23.320 you know how else you get ants i actually you probably don't get ants from this but
00:27:28.380 on december 20th the the sausage swiper is known to hide in the rafters and steal sausages that
00:27:37.480 were being smoked apparently smoking sausages is a really big thing in iceland and so this is like
00:27:42.840 it fits that there would be a sausage swiper yeah well i think in a lot of like countries where
00:27:48.660 they're so far north they do a lot of food preservation yeah so that would that would
00:27:53.160 make sense sausage swiper sounds like a fun nickname for somebody in college
00:27:57.120 this is alana she's my roommate the sausage swiper she'll steal your boyfriend real quick
00:28:03.580 on december 21st the luga guy here is the window peeper oh no yeah he would peek inside people's
00:28:12.540 windows to see if there was anything that he could steal so he's just casing the place
00:28:17.160 this douchebag i feel like this is just some guy right he's like no i'm a yule lad he's like i'm 0.62
00:28:24.180 fun i'm cute i'm a yule lad i'm not weird and they're like why do you have pliers uh on december 0.90
00:28:30.400 22nd we have the goth the fade who is the doorway sniffer good old boy doorway sniffer what are
00:28:37.280 you sniffing what what's to be sniffed on a door a lot of people walk through them so maybe he's
00:28:41.800 just taking in all the smells he's known to have an extremely long large nose and an amazing sense
00:28:48.980 of smell he usually uses to seek out yummy some kind of food that i did not look up a pronunciation
00:28:54.760 for like does he i take it he steals probably after sniffing at the door these all kind of
00:29:00.220 seem like they're thieves in some way shape or form yeah they're all they're all food thieves
00:29:05.280 coming out of the hills and then like stealing food whereas like their parents have the audacity
00:29:10.120 to stay in their cave and eat kid stew yeah like this is just a really harrowing tale and the cat
00:29:15.820 cat eats the kids who don't have new clothing for christmas jesus christ what a great family
00:29:20.700 on december 23rd the key yet kroker is the meat hook he has a hook that he uses to swing in and
00:29:28.740 steal your meat oh again thief and snipping your doorways they're swiping your sausages and stealing 0.92
00:29:34.900 On December 24th, we have the Kettasnikir, which is the candle stealer. 0.99
00:29:39.940 He's the one who followed the children around to steal their candles. 1.00
00:29:43.560 Because back when these sort of like myths or folklore came about, candles used to be made from lard.
00:29:49.580 And so another food thief, apparently.
00:29:52.660 Oh, my God.
00:29:53.600 And that was all of the Yule lads.
00:29:55.200 We got through it.
00:29:56.360 Well done.
00:29:57.280 Thank you.
00:29:57.960 That's so creative, you know, Icelandic folklore.
00:30:00.860 like to have all these different yule lads and like that they have a different purpose yeah
00:30:05.620 each one like we're making fun but like it's just that's fascinating it's funny to like read it to
00:30:11.420 you because you're just like coming into this in the dark completely yeah and like because i was
00:30:18.140 listening to a guy on youtube i should probably remember his name we'll put it in the sources
00:30:23.700 yeah he does a lot of um icelandic pronunciation videos and so he was telling the tale about the
00:30:29.820 family with the yule cat and the lazy dad and whatever and i was just like this is just so
00:30:35.360 interesting that they have this folklore about they made up 13 different characters yeah on top
00:30:43.420 of the mom the dad and the yule cat yeah and like can you imagine like being a kid growing up in
00:30:48.820 iceland like once december hits you're just like you know there's something to look forward to
00:30:52.940 every day like this is the day of like the sausage swiper i wonder if this was kind of a way for
00:30:58.580 parents to get their children to help like clean up yeah it's like you better wash all of your 0.56
00:31:03.240 spoons others why is the spoon lickers coming that makes so much sense that would be really funny
00:31:07.980 like that's kind of the fun thing about like so folklore always gives you that sort of glimpse
00:31:12.220 into and fairy tales as well they give you that glimpse into what life was like when they became
00:31:18.180 like well known so like the fact that they're like looking for candles and all that but it's also
00:31:23.860 really like it's really equal like it's this will happen to rich families and poor families like
00:31:30.100 anybody as long as you have like a doorway and a window and pots and pans like they'll come to
00:31:35.780 every house like it's it affects everybody so it's like this real communal thing the yule lads
00:31:40.740 are the great equalizer yeah the great equalizer there's more to dig into if you hear something
00:31:46.920 on the show and you're like wow that's really cool like there's a lot more digging you can do
00:31:52.420 yeah and learn even more about it we're just kind of like we're the sampler yeah and we're we're
00:31:59.680 making fun of these things but it's just like it's like anything when you look back at it as an adult
00:32:03.980 something that's sort of geared towards kids you're just like what what were these people on
00:32:08.080 coming up with this stuff right next up we have la befana the fairy tale version of la befana
00:32:14.500 is that um well this is sort of like uh you know when christianity was like we're gonna change this
00:32:20.120 to our narrative of course like how they made christmas a christian holiday instead of yule
00:32:25.460 which i think we're going to do an episode about so it is said that when the wise men were going
00:32:31.300 to bring gifts to the baby jesus they invited this witch-like woman who was la bifana when they first
00:32:37.540 asked her she said that she didn't want to go with saying that she was too busy with her housework
00:32:42.440 but she later decided that she would follow them and bring gifts for the baby jesus in the christian
00:32:48.460 version she lost her way and wasn't able to give her gifts to jesus so she gave them to the other
00:32:53.120 children like in the town instead okay la bifana does not come on christmas but instead she comes
00:32:59.900 on epiphany in italy the christmas season lasts through epiphany and epiphany is the religious
00:33:06.220 feast which is mostly celebrated by italians it's meant to celebrate when the three wise men showed
00:33:11.840 up to bring gifts for bb jesus it falls on january 6th many children in italy believe in
00:33:19.520 la bifana as well as santa or babbo natale children hang stockings on the night of january 5th
00:33:25.300 and an expectation of la bifana to visit the stockings hang on windows or over fireplaces
00:33:31.200 usually along with a glass of wine or christmas treats such as panettone or other pastries oh
00:33:37.840 she's fancy she's wine and panettone oh she's my kind of girl my husband also loves wine and
00:33:46.000 panettone every year he's like oh like his parents will like always get one of those cakes
00:33:50.840 like we'll go over there on christmas time he's like you guys got the panettone
00:33:54.320 and i'm like you're obsessed so he's like la bafana he's a classy girl you know he really is
00:34:01.880 so the good kids get sweets and like other little knickknacks and stuff like that and bad kids get
00:34:10.260 coal oh always like santa claus yeah uh useful sort of not anymore though um labifana rides on 0.98
00:34:21.080 a broom and she looks like a witch you know she looks like how you'd imagine a witch like with 0.53
00:34:25.800 the dress and like the head covering and stuff like that she's covered in soot though okay because
00:34:31.540 she's always going up and down people's chimneys her origins trace back as early as the 13th 0.70
00:34:39.500 century carl ginsburg who is an italian historian thinks that there is a possibility that befana
00:34:45.420 is an evolution of percda or percda have you ever heard of this no person okay so i think it's percda
00:34:55.320 percta is an alpine goddess from the pagan age she's depicted either as a beautiful woman as
00:35:01.840 palest snow or as a tattered old hag although this can't be confirmed it's just the the
00:35:07.840 similarities and how they look makes it think makes them think that maybe la befana is sort
00:35:13.460 of like an evolution of percta interesting you know when people complain about like that there
00:35:19.140 are no like original movies or anything anymore it's all reboots and stuff yeah like humans would
00:35:24.900 be doing this forever we reboot our like folklore figures we reboot our old stories
00:35:29.900 if we like something we'll just make it again everything's a reboot yeah it's all the reboot
00:35:36.660 other some other theories are that she is evolved from epana which is apparently the celtic goddess
00:35:43.700 of horses ponies donkeys and mules yes or she could have been diana the greek goddess of the
00:35:50.880 hunt neither of these connections are able to be traced but they're just some more theories
00:35:56.260 yeah next up we have our favorite boy krampus yes do you know much about krampus other than
00:36:04.680 just like he's like a creepy evil looking dude i feel like krampus has had like some sort of
00:36:10.200 resurgence over the past like five years yeah there was a there was the movie i think it was
00:36:16.960 yeah it was a movie was it called krampus yes there was another movie because i remember because
00:36:23.180 i was looking for the movie with um adam scott because i knew he was in it is that the krampus
00:36:27.880 movie yes i know i was looking for like links to watch it very legally online and um there was
00:36:34.880 another krampus movie which was like very much like a b movie like it was really really bad
00:36:39.720 and it came out the same year so i think there was like two krampus movies in the same year
00:36:43.560 but like oh yeah one was like with adam scott and like kind of like hollywood people yeah he
00:36:48.760 kind of did get like a resurgence because of those movies yeah which is pretty it's interesting
00:36:54.700 because um i'll get into it yeah we'll we'll circle back okay in central european tradition
00:37:02.920 saint nicholas is usually accompanied by a mischievous sidekick saint nicholas is the nice
00:37:08.280 guy who brings the gifts and his partner is the one who brings coal or other punishments for bad
00:37:13.540 children for example in germany saint nick has neck ruprecht sounds german yeah southern germany
00:37:21.340 and austria they have mr krampus krampus comes from the german word krampen which means claw
00:37:28.540 oh also what you go through when you're on your period
00:37:31.880 oh yeah i'm just kramping it said that krampus is the son of the norse god hell
00:37:41.420 he is half goat half man in appearance resembling a satyr from greek mythology
00:37:46.180 he has long horns claws and a goat-like beard he has a long pointed tongue and hooves instead of
00:37:53.880 feet he's usually wrapped in like chains and bells and he sort of resembles the way that
00:37:59.100 the devil is depicted in a lot of paintings and illustrations grandpa's is said to beat children
00:38:04.920 with birch branches or put them in his sack and bring them back to his lair oh god which sounds
00:38:11.100 terrifying no yeah who wants to be put in a sack or beaten with anything yeah branches as well like
00:38:20.280 it's not even like a good dry slap you know right he's using a weapon pre-christian era krampus is
00:38:27.560 said to watch over humans protect them and scare away evil ghosts and help people overcome their
00:38:32.420 fears the catholic church and conservative christian groups tried to banish krampus
00:38:37.160 celebrations due to krampus resembling the devil of course they did at one point during the
00:38:42.320 inquisition it was forbidden to masquerade as the devil and he was even punishable by death 0.86
00:38:47.100 can you imagine you like put on a costume and they're like come to the gallows with us wait
00:38:51.580 what just some poor unfortunate looking guy with a beard and a really long tongue and they're like
00:38:56.400 no wearing like a sheepskin coat he's like no i was just trying something out you think it's cold
00:39:02.340 out but due to the laws about dressing up as the devil the customs and traditions only survived in
00:39:08.020 very rural areas from there it made its way back into popularity once it was safe again the villagers
00:39:14.620 were keeping it alive holding down the fort so there's a centuries old folk custom called the
00:39:20.240 krampus run or the krampus lau it's held in mid-november to early december it is usually on
00:39:26.400 december 5th or 6th because that's saint nicholas's day it's held in the alpine region which is
00:39:32.180 south bavaria south austria and slovania in larger places like munich and salzburg krampus runs take
00:39:39.280 the form of parades and the parades march through the christmas markets that are held
00:39:43.460 the parades are put on by krampus passen which are krampus clubs sponsored by local businesses
00:39:50.540 they dress in krampus costumes carved of wooden masks pelts and loud bells these are interactive
00:39:56.980 parades apparently will like pull spectators like into the parade oh god and they'll like
00:40:03.100 they'll like mess with their hair or they might like hit them with a branch like to like be like
00:40:08.400 krampus and i was like i would not no i would be hiding yeah i would be like in my window like
00:40:14.500 looking out um but it just makes me wonder i'm like how if they're hitting people with branches
00:40:21.260 like how hard are they hitting them yeah it's like is there assault going on here but the parade is
00:40:29.040 usually led by a saint somebody dressed as saint nicholas and followed by tons of people dressed
00:40:34.360 as krampus perctin perctin i think we said before or i said before she's the goddess of alpine
00:40:40.580 paganism perctin is like the the collective word for people dressed like the goddess percta
00:40:46.040 and Hexen, which are witches, as well as other figures from Alpine folklore. So Perkton have
00:40:52.340 four to ten horns, while Krampus only have two. Masks are made with materials such as pinewood,
00:40:58.520 driftwood, horsehair, animal teeth, fur, and horns from Alpine creatures. Some people will argue
00:41:05.060 that Krampus is just the balance to Saint Nicholas or Santa. Saint Nicholas is there to reward
00:41:10.440 children who have done good, and then Krampus is there to carry out justice against those who
00:41:15.780 misbehave he's long gnarled arm of the law a long hairy hoof of the law
00:41:22.860 but it's like what the hell is saint nicholas doing this whole time is he just like turning 0.68
00:41:28.240 a blind eye right and krampus is beating some guy and santa's like anyway uh here's the toy car 0.51
00:41:36.260 he's like he's my sidekick i can't control him he's the rogue one krampus has gone rogue he's
00:41:42.880 holding a switch not the toy the branch so yeah that was my episode uh to touch upon different
00:41:51.080 santa-like characters i really enjoyed it that was cool thank you one of those things that like
00:41:57.260 over the years you slowly you get exposed to like one or two of these things and you kind of hear
00:42:02.600 about them and you mean to go look it up and then you never actually do like the most i know about
00:42:07.340 krampus is from that movie and i'm not going to trust that so that's cool to know that like
00:42:11.440 there's whole festivals and clubs dedicated to doing it like in the same way we would have a
00:42:16.180 santa and one of the articles that i read it was saying that these like krampus parades have gotten
00:42:20.840 so popular and especially now with the invention of the internet there's like krampus festivals in
00:42:26.840 the u.s now too oh and apparently los angeles holds like a really big one which is pretty cool
00:42:33.340 and then i looked up i was like are there any in chicago and i found like they do a krampus market
00:42:38.720 here okay which i think is actually i don't think it's related to like krampus because if i recall
00:42:45.560 correctly i know some of the people who like well i don't know them but i know of the people who
00:42:50.200 hold it and it's like a it's like a play on words it's like a women's charity market and like when
00:42:56.280 you come you're supposed to bring a box of like pads or tampons to donate to like women's shelters
00:43:00.800 that's cute they also do hold krampus parties here apparently yeah that's really cool i just
00:43:06.980 like when traditions can um like escape the boundaries of like where they were formed and
00:43:12.320 especially in the u.s i feel like we don't have i don't know i maybe it's just me but i feel like
00:43:16.760 there's not a lot of like folklore traditions other than like santa claus yeah it's cool to
00:43:22.360 me that now people are like embracing traditions from other places and it's something that like
00:43:27.460 you can like if you have like that kind of heritage you can introduce your kids and be
00:43:31.200 like this is like from like where your grandparents are from or your great great great grandparents
00:43:35.420 are from and this is this is what they would have celebrated when they were kids and now we're
00:43:39.900 celebrating i'll tell my children and this the spoon licker and the door sniffer and the yogurt
00:43:45.800 gobbler or whatever he is pretty sure i have some skitter in my fridge and i'm gonna be like
00:43:52.840 thinking of it now every time perfect okay so i hope you enjoyed our episode on krampus la befana
