00:01:40.520 There Are No Girls on the Internet
00:01:41.860 is a production of iHeartRadio and Unbossed Creative.
00:01:48.640 I'm Bridget Todd, and this is There Are No Girls on the Internet.
00:01:54.160 Hello. So if I sound a little bit out of it, it's because it's been a very long week.
00:02:01.460 I suspect that is probably true for you wherever you're listening.
00:02:05.700 I think we could all use a week where things just feel a little bit normal.
00:02:10.540 I'm not even asking for good. Frankly, I'm just asking for normal.
00:02:14.820 But that week is not this week.
00:02:17.340 So I wanted to talk a little bit about what is going on with Charlie Kirk.
00:02:22.440 So I'll tell you the broad strokes of what's happening, and then I want to get into my main point,
00:02:26.960 which is what the reaction has been like and what I think it says about where we're at as a culture.
00:02:33.020 So in case you have not heard, this week, 31-year-old conservative right-wing activist Charlie Kirk,
00:02:40.320 huge Trump ally, was shot and killed during a campus debate at Utah Valley University in Utah.
00:02:46.800 Law enforcement initially released some pretty, like, unhelpful videos and images of a suspect.
00:02:53.340 But because, notably, everybody who might have known what they're doing at the FBI was systematically pushed out of the FBI.
00:03:00.800 People like Matab Syed, who was pushed out of the Utah FBI in July because she was not a good fit, along with a bunch of other FBI officials as part of a purge.
00:03:09.160 Because of all that, the FBI and law enforcement in Utah were basically like, yeah, we have no leads whatsoever.
00:03:16.220 We have no helpful information. We're just looking for a white guy in Utah, which, yeah, if you've been to Utah, not the most helpful.
00:03:23.520 Just this morning, as I was sitting down to record, I saw news that they do have the suspect in custody.
00:03:29.920 Our FBI director, Kash Patel, attended a press conference but did not speak.
00:03:34.440 Frankly, he just looked very much in over his head.
00:03:38.200 There is this video I saw of him kind of silently skulking around the sidelines of the press conference.
00:03:43.700 And I almost thought, you know, even if you don't really know what you're doing or you're overwhelmed, you could always just thank people for their hard work, call out some names.
00:03:51.280 That's always a good thing to do at a press conference if you don't know what else to say.
00:03:54.620 I'll put the video of him in the show notes, but I know that look.
00:03:58.740 It is the look of somebody who was in way over their head.
00:04:01.620 Honestly, it is the look of a podcaster who was just put in charge of a very high profile murder investigation.
00:04:07.020 Honestly, I would probably have the same look.
00:04:08.980 None of the officials took questions.
00:04:10.580 The whole thing just did not inspire confidence.
00:04:13.580 Patel also was posting updates on social media that that ended up being wrong.
00:04:17.740 At first, they said that he had apprehended a suspect, but then that was a mistake and that man had been released.
00:04:22.840 And then Patel said the investigation was ongoing. 0.61
00:04:25.040 So if you listen to the episode that we did with our producer, Joey Pat, about how trans folks are baselessly blamed for instances of violence, that is absolutely what happened in this situation.
00:04:36.460 I just took a search on Twitter, and it is filled with verified blue check accounts sharing images of people that they, one, say are trans, and two, have been named as the suspect, just like clockwork.
00:04:48.960 It should go without saying that none of that is true.
00:04:51.420 Early reports from The Wall Street Journal indicated that ammunition was found inscribed with, quote, transgender and anti-fascist ideology.
00:04:59.480 And I was thinking, what the hell does transgender and anti-fascist ideology mean?
00:05:03.880 The Trans Journalist Association helpfully cautioned against media outlets repeating this without actually knowing more and just generally reminded that, quote,
00:05:13.080 Transgender ideology is a term coined for and used in anti-trans political messaging to falsely equate identity with politics, which is a way to frame trans identity as a political choice rather than an innate identity.
00:05:25.820 as it is often unclear what actions or political positions the phrases actually refer to,
00:05:31.700 not unlike how the homosexual agenda is an amorphous term that has no real definition.
00:05:37.600 Reporters, they said, should be careful about using this term.
00:05:40.680 It is exclusively used to attack a minority group for political gain.
00:05:44.840 So the Wall Street Journal said that this ammunition had transgender and anti-fascist ideology written on it.
00:05:49.400 But soon thereafter, the New York Times reported that a senior law enforcement official
00:05:52.640 with direct knowledge of the investigation cautioned that those reports had not been
00:05:56.420 verified by ATF analysis and did not match other summaries of the evidence and might
00:06:01.280 turn out to have been misread or misinterpreted.
00:06:04.140 And then just a few hours later, The Wall Street Journal walked back that story, stopping
00:06:08.380 just short of a retraction.
00:06:10.120 And what is so annoying about that is that it was already posted everywhere, headline
00:06:14.300 after headline, that trans ideology was found written on the ammunition.
00:06:18.560 But I have seen a lot less reporting of the fact that Wall Street Journal has now clarified
00:06:22.620 that these are just preliminary reports, and cautioned folks against taking them at face value.
00:06:27.760 And that makes sense because we now know there was no trans ideology written on that ammunition.
00:06:34.240 People spent however long demonizing trans folks for no reason and lying about trans folks for no
00:06:39.940 reason and did not even follow back up with the correct information. So let's talk about how
00:06:47.040 people are responding to this murder. I obviously am not supportive of violence. Frankly, I think
00:06:54.100 this is a really dangerous development, which could likely lead to more violence and further
00:06:58.540 increase the fear that so many trans and queer and marginalized people are already living with 0.99
00:07:03.180 every goddamn day. So that is where I stand. But I also need to make clear that there is a world 0.99
00:07:08.820 of difference between cheering violence against somebody and completely lying about and whitewashing
00:07:14.880 somebody's entire career, what they did, what they said, and what they actually stood for. 0.98
00:07:20.020 And I feel like I am losing my goddamn mind watching people do that this week. We do not 0.96
00:07:25.380 have to make Charlie Kirk into a hero or a martyr to wish his family well or to express condolences
00:07:31.880 to his wife and kids. We do not have to divorce Charlie Kirk from what it was he was doing and
00:07:37.600 literally, quite literally, the things that he was saying when he was killed. We can actually
00:07:42.940 tell the truth about those things. I almost think that we have gotten to a point where that if you
00:07:47.380 just read Charlie Kirk's actual recent words in public that he said, you would be told that you
00:07:54.140 were being disrespectful to the dead. Because you'll notice that nobody is actually pointing
00:07:59.220 to any words or quotes or videos of him saying things that they found profound or whatever
00:08:05.260 after his death. Friggin' Kristen Chenoweth from Wicked posted, quote,
00:08:09.880 I'm so upset. I didn't always agree, but I appreciated some perspectives, and I would absolutely love to know which perspectives specifically she appreciated from Charlie Kirk.
00:08:21.000 Online, they are comparing Charlie Kirk to Martin Luther King. I'm not kidding.
00:08:26.420 Representative Anna Paulina Luna circulated a draft letter asking for a statue of Kirk to be placed in the U.S. Capitol.
00:08:32.660 Representative Andrew Clyde supported that, saying, quote, we have a statue of MLK in the Capitol, don't we?
00:08:38.300 basically saying that Kirk and MLK should be similarly honored.
00:08:42.580 Mind you, this is how I know these people don't even know what they're talking about
00:08:45.940 and they don't even know what Kirk actually did or stood for or said or felt
00:08:49.900 because Charlie Kirk did not even like Martin Luther King.
00:08:53.780 This time last year, what was Charlie Kirk doing?
00:08:56.760 He said that he was going to start dedicating his podcast to discrediting Martin Luther King's legacy.
00:09:01.960 So this just lets me understand that these people have no idea about the actual attitudes
00:09:06.100 and positions of the person that they are lionizing in death.
00:09:09.440 The Trump administration ordered flags at half-mast around the country
00:09:12.560 at the Yankees game and did a tribute to Kirk.
00:09:14.900 There was a moment of silence at the NFL game.
00:09:17.260 This, after all that hand-winging about not bringing politics into sports
00:09:21.200 when people were kneeling for the anthem, remember that?
00:09:23.600 So Charlie Kirk was a private citizen, a podcaster,
00:09:27.160 who did not have any role within the administration or in government,
00:09:30.300 and yet his body was transported on Air Force Two
00:09:33.780 with the vice president at taxpayer expense.
00:09:36.560 And I think that there is something
00:09:38.280 about the way the internet is reacting to this,
00:09:41.280 the speed and the scale of the reaction,
00:09:43.520 the lionization, the spectacle,
00:09:45.180 that has truly broken my brain
00:09:47.460 and revealed to me that we genuinely are
00:09:50.240 just living in a fractured reality.
00:09:52.360 Because we have people lionizing Charlie Kirk
00:09:55.100 in this way that I simply do not understand.
00:09:58.100 Like genuinely, if you knew about Charlie Kirk
00:10:00.960 just at face value, stuff that he did,
00:10:03.100 stuff that he said, what his work actually looked like. I don't think people are actually grappling
00:10:08.020 with Charlie Kirk, who he was, what he did, what he said, what his work actually looked like. To
00:10:14.180 the point where, listen, I don't like Charlie Kirk, but it almost feels disrespectful to the
00:10:18.960 man's work and life and legacy to completely ignore the work that I suspect he was quite proud
00:10:24.200 of. In a weird kind of roundabout way, I feel like people who are telling the truth about the
00:10:29.080 work that he did are being more respectful of him because they're actually telling the truth about
00:10:33.600 the stuff that he spent his life doing. And I think that's why you might see like your normie
00:10:37.980 aunt or something on Facebook being like, oh, what a nice young man. It's so sad that he was killed.
00:10:43.200 And I think the reason is, is that he was young. He had a wife and kids. And I think that it's
00:10:49.180 easy for people to say, oh, he just was someone who cared about scripture and the Bible and
00:10:53.800 Christianity. Like I've seen people talk about Charlie Kirk like he was more or less a neutral
00:10:58.680 figure who just traveled around to colleges to teach young students about the power and importance
00:11:04.320 of civil debate and discourse, which is so far removed from reality that I simply cannot let it
00:11:10.500 stand. I saw somebody say, oh, he would go into these hotbeds of liberal campuses only armed with
00:11:17.120 a Bible and a microphone. And I think if that's genuinely all you know about this person, I could
00:11:22.460 maybe see why you would get into a situation where you're lionizing them because you really
00:11:27.380 don't know what it was that person actually did or actually stood for.

00:14:35.140 At our back.
00:14:36.120 the first thing people really need to understand about charlie kirk is that he wasn't just a
00:14:43.620 podcaster who said mean things into a microphone for lots and lots of money although he did a lot
00:14:48.660 of that he wasn't just some shock jock radio dj his work caused actual harm to people just take
00:14:55.920 a look at his work with turning points usa so in november 2016 charlie kirk's organization
00:15:01.200 Turning Points USA launched what they called the Professor Watchlist. The initiative aimed to,
00:15:06.380 quote, expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students
00:15:10.440 and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom. The Watchlist functioned as an online database
00:15:15.760 featuring names, pictures, and accusations against professors that Kirk and his followers do not like.
00:15:21.980 The list is still up. These allegations often stem from student complaints, media reports,
00:15:27.060 or cherry-picked selective quotes.
00:15:29.740 Once listed, professors face harassment campaigns
00:15:32.440 including hate mail, doxing, and threats.
00:15:35.260 Y'all, I know real people in my life,
00:15:38.080 academics, speakers, and writers,
00:15:39.620 who were threatened, silenced, and harassed
00:15:42.200 because of this list.
00:15:44.120 Here's just a sampling.
00:15:46.020 George Sicarelli O'Meara,
00:15:47.640 a political science professor
00:15:48.680 formerly at Drexel University,
00:15:50.680 was added to the watch list
00:15:51.820 after satirical tweets critical of white supremacy,
00:15:54.860 including a viral post that read, 0.97
00:15:56.280 all I want for Christmas is white genocide. Now, he told the Washington Post that the tweet was 0.62
00:16:01.080 meant to be satirical, poking fun at this idea of white genocide as, quote, an imaginary concept
00:16:06.580 used by the far right to scare people. But that got him added to this list. And after he was
00:16:11.500 included on it, he reported an avalanche of violent threats leading to his eventual resignation in
00:16:16.580 2017. After a year of harassment by right-wing white supremacist media outlets and internet
00:16:21.520 mobs, after death threats and threats of violence directed at me and my family,
00:16:24.880 My situation has become unsustainable, he wrote in a statement on Facebook.
00:16:29.420 There's also Tommy Curry, a Black velocity professor formerly at Texas A&M University who specialized in race theory.
00:16:35.520 In an episode of a radio show, Curry, who is supportive of gun ownership, was talking about the Quentin Tarantino movie Django Unchained.
00:16:42.800 If you haven't seen that movie, it's a formerly enslaved person gets revenge on his enslaver.
00:16:46.840 The Guardian reports that he talked about how uneasy white people are with the idea of Black people talking about gun ownership and using them to combat racist forces. 0.98
00:16:55.920 But when a recording of the talk resurfaced, people thought that he was telling Black people to kill white people.
00:17:01.660 This idea, the Guardian reports, swept through conservative media and into the fever swamps of Reddit forums and racist message boards, and the threats followed. 0.87
00:17:09.580 So that particular instance did not start on the professor watchlist, but the watchlist amplified it, and Curry faced sustained harassment and death threats.
00:17:18.380 Robin D'Angelo, best known for her book White Fragility, was included on the watchlist for promoting, quote, anti-white bias in her scholarship and teachings on systemic racism.
00:17:27.140 And I think that her case really illustrates what the watchlist is really about, which is punishing and silencing scholarship that names and calls out and critiques inequality.
00:17:38.060 Same thing with Kiyanga Yamada-Taylor at Princeton University,
00:17:41.860 a leading Black feminist scholar who writes about race and housing inequality.
00:17:45.900 She was added to the professor watch list after criticizing Trump in a commencement speech
00:17:49.960 and basically had to pull out of her public appearances afterward because of public threats.
00:17:55.280 In the wake of Charlie Kirk's death, Professor Stacey Patton,
00:17:58.740 another Black woman professor targeted by Kirk for harassment, had this to say on Facebook.
00:18:03.640 It is a little long, but I do think people should hear what she had to say.
00:18:06.540 And just a heads up that her post includes some slurs, and you will hear those in this segment.
00:18:12.440 She says, 1.00
00:18:36.540 bit venom at me through the phone. Bitch, cunt, nigger. They threatened all manner of violence. 1.00
00:18:42.400 They overwhelmed the university's PR lines and the president's office with calls demanding that I be
00:18:47.320 fired. The flood was so relentless that the head of campus security reached out to offer me an
00:18:52.140 escort because they feared one of these keyboard soldiers might step out of his basement and do me
00:18:57.240 harm. And I am not unique. Kirk's watch list has terrorized lesions of professors across this
00:19:03.180 country. Women, Black faculty, queer scholars, basically anyone who challenged white supremacy, 1.00
00:19:08.580 gun culture, or Christian nationalism, suddenly found themselves the target of coordinated abuse.
00:19:14.040 Some received threats. Some had their jobs threatened. Some left academia entirely.
00:19:19.160 Kirk sent the loud message to us, speak the truth and we will unleash the mob.
00:19:24.160 That is the culture of violence that Charlie Kirk built. He normalized violence, he curated it,
00:19:28.880 monetized it, and sicked it on anyone who dared puncture his movement's lies.
00:19:32.440 And now, in the wake of his shooting, there is all this national outpouring of mourning, moments of silence, yellow prayer hands, and tributes painting him as a civil debater.
00:19:41.640 But the truth is, Kirk and his foot soldiers spent years terrorizing educators trying to silence us with harassment and fear.
00:19:48.260 And now, the same violence he unleashed on others has come full circle.
00:19:51.680 But what I find especially jarring is the dissonance in public mourning for a smug white man whose life work was actively hostile to certain groups.
00:19:59.860 Kirk spent years demonizing LGBTQ people, 0.95
00:20:02.800 mocking gun survivors, spewing racism about Black folks, 0.70
00:20:05.480 and pushing policies that literally shorten lives. 0.95
00:20:08.140 It is so revolting to watch a bipartisan wave of grief 0.98
00:20:10.820 sweep over this hateful racist 0.97
00:20:12.360 as if he was a neutral community servant.
00:20:15.080 So I wanted to share what Professor Patton is saying here
00:20:17.660 because I think that we are seeing this culture
00:20:20.600 that is demanding people who were personally targeted
00:20:23.920 by this person and personally targeted
00:20:26.300 by the culture this person designed and built up,
00:20:30.040 we are seeing systems demand
00:20:33.280 that those same people who were targeted
00:20:35.400 now mourn for this person,
00:20:37.920 now hold space for this person,
00:20:39.880 now not speak up about what they experienced
00:20:42.400 about this person
00:20:43.080 and what they experienced at this person's hands.
00:20:46.220 And Professor Patton is not alone.
00:20:48.780 404 reports that the American Association
00:20:50.720 of University Professors
00:20:51.840 wrote in an open letter in 2017
00:20:53.620 that the professor watch list
00:20:55.340 lists names of professors with their institutional affiliations, photographs,
00:20:59.280 thereby making it easy for would-be stalkers and cyberbullies to target them.
00:21:04.020 Individual faculty members who have been included on such lists, singled out elsewhere,
00:21:08.640 have been subject to threats of violence, including sexual assault,
00:21:11.780 through hundreds of emails, calls, and social media postings.
00:21:15.140 Such threatening messages are likely to stifle the free expression of the targeted faculty member.
00:21:19.500 Further, the publicity that such cases attract can cause others to self-censor
00:21:23.380 so as to avoid being subject to similar treatment.
00:21:26.460 Campus free speech rights group FIRE found that censorship and punishment of professors
00:21:31.080 skyrocketed between 2020 and 2023 in part because of efforts of the Professor Watchlist.
00:21:37.160 So we need to really keep it real that the Professor Watchlist is not just a catalog of
00:21:42.140 liberal professors. It is a tool designed to intimidate and silence people who challenged
00:21:48.040 entrenched power structures by disproportionately targeting marginalized scholars, trans and queer
00:21:54.000 scholars, Black women, and anybody who did work around inequality and critical voices, it really
00:21:59.780 underscores the stakes of this never-ending harassment campaign that people like Kirk
00:22:05.420 disingenuously call the free speech debate. It is not about protecting open inquiry, but about
00:22:11.640 suppressing dissent pretty clearly. And it's all about silencing critics of the right. And Charlie
00:22:17.400 kirk got to do this work of silencing people and bullying people into silence and making people
00:22:23.040 fear for their lives for what they said while simultaneously branding himself a warrior and
00:22:28.900 protector of free speech on college campuses while he himself was going to college campuses 0.96
00:22:34.200 to get paid big money for talking about how black women like me lacked the brain processing power to
00:22:39.960 be taken seriously but now they're coming out and they're saying it for us they're coming out and
00:22:44.980 they're saying, I'm only here because of affirmative action. Yeah, we know. You do not
00:22:50.800 have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously. You had to go steal a 0.71
00:22:56.760 white person's slot to go be taken somewhat seriously. Charlie Kirk's whole thing was about
00:23:02.260 setting a double standard where he got to say whatever he wanted and his opponents were forced
00:23:07.960 into silence. Like, I get to say whatever I want and it's free speech, but if you have anything
00:23:12.540 to say about it, you'll wind up on my watch list for it and get fired. And it's the exact same
00:23:17.420 culture that we're contending with right now, where Charlie Kirk openly talked about how he
00:23:21.900 hated empathy, and yet anybody who was deemed not being empathetic enough about Kirk's death
00:23:27.260 winds up on a list, literally. Wired has a great piece called Right-Wing Activists Are Targeting
00:23:33.560 People for Allegedly Celebrating Charlie Kirk's Death, all about how far-right influencers and
00:23:38.160 violent extremists are posting identifying details about people that they view as celebrating or
00:23:44.140 glorifying Charlie Kirk's death. The campaign has been swift and widespread. It has already led to
00:23:49.960 at least one person losing their job and others receiving death threats. There is already a
00:23:54.560 website, CharlieMurderers.com, that Wired reports is a, quote, central hub of this activity, which
00:24:00.740 was registered in the early evening on the day Kirk was shot and is revealing certain personal
00:24:05.200 information such as social media usernames and email addresses of individuals the operators
00:24:09.640 believe were celebrating his horrific murder. One of the first names on the list is journalist
00:24:15.240 Rachel Gilmore. She posted that she was terrified to think of how far-right fans of Kirk aching for
00:24:21.240 more violence could very well turn this into an even more radicalizing moment. Will they now
00:24:25.860 believe their fears have been proven right and feel they have to retaliate regardless of who
00:24:30.640 actually was behind the initial shooting. So after she was put on this list, she told Wired that the
00:24:36.400 website has made her genuinely afraid for her safety. I feel awful for anyone whose name was on
00:24:41.080 it. It's clear that purpose of the website is to do exactly what the post that landed me on there
00:24:45.320 warned Kirk supporters might want to do. Retaliate. And obviously she is not wrong. Rachel got death
00:24:52.200 threats and rape threats and DMs from people promising to find out where she lives. And
00:24:56.980 importantly, Wired reports that, just like Rachel, a lot of the people who got on that list did not
00:25:04.080 glorify violence or really even celebrate Kirk's death. Some of the posts are just apathetic tweets,
00:25:09.720 things like posting the news of Kirk's death and writing, and the world keeps spitting. But that
00:25:15.720 apathy, not even outright celebrating or condoning or glorifying his death, was enough for them to be
00:25:21.840 included on this list. Libs of TikTok's Chaya Raychik highlighted that the assistant dean at
00:25:27.220 the Office of Student Care and Conduct at Middle Tennessee State University wrote on her Facebook
00:25:31.960 page that she had zero sympathy for Charlie Kirk, and she was fired within hours. The university
00:25:37.780 put up a statement saying, an MTSU employee today offered inappropriate and callous comments on
00:25:43.060 social media concerning the horrific and tragic murder of Charlie Kirk. The comments by this
00:25:47.400 employee who worked in a position of trust directly with students were inconsistent with
00:25:51.340 our values and have undermined the university's credibility and reputation with our students,
00:25:55.380 faculty, staff, and community at large. This employee has been fired effective immediately.
00:26:00.160 Variety even reported that Comcast, the parent company of NBC, MSNBC, Bravo, etc.,
00:26:06.380 sent out an all-staff memo warning staffers not to say the wrong thing about Charlie Kirk.
00:26:12.900 So this was after MSNBC swiftly fired Matthew Dowd, who had been working as an MSNBC contributor,
00:26:18.200 after he said on air that Kirk was a divisive figure who pushed hate speech.
00:26:22.980 The Comcast memo said that that coverage was at odds with fostering civil dialogue
00:26:27.260 and being willing to listen to the points of view of those who have differing opinions.
00:26:31.140 We should be able to disagree robustly and passionately, but ultimately with respect.
00:26:35.060 We need to do better.
00:26:35.960 So you really see how mainstream media is doing the work of whitewashing Kirk's actual words
00:26:41.680 and attitudes, and also setting the agenda that stepping out of the norm of how people are deciding
00:26:46.580 to talk about that in his death will not be tolerated. It doesn't stop there because Louisiana
00:26:51.960 Representative Clay Higgins says that he's going to seek to have social media companies place
00:26:56.440 lifetime bans on users that he deems as having glorified or celebrated the murder of Charlie
00:27:02.860 Kirk. He says, I'm going to use congressional authority and every influence with big tech
00:27:07.480 platforms to mandate immediate ban for life of every post or commenter that belittled the
00:27:12.880 assassination of Charlie Kirk. Mind you, this is the same representative, Clay Higgins, who
00:27:16.980 threatened to put Twitter executives in prison because of what he claimed was unfair censorship
00:27:22.020 of content about Hunter Biden's laptop. So we again see the double standard where censorship
00:27:27.120 of me is bad, but censorship of my opponents is virtuous and patriotic. There is no principle here
00:27:33.760 other than oppression. So Higgins continued, if they ran their mouth with their smart-ass hatred 0.97
00:27:39.220 celebrating the heinous murder of that beautiful young man who dedicated his whole life to
00:27:43.660 delivering respectful, conservative truth into the hearts of liberal enclave universities,
00:27:48.380 armed only with a Bible and a microphone and a constitution, those profiles must come down.
00:27:53.900 He said he plans to lobby big tech to have zero tolerance for violent political hate content.
00:27:58.800 I'm also going after their business licenses and permitting. Their businesses will be
00:28:02.420 blacklisted aggressively. They should be kicked out of every school and their driver's license
00:28:06.220 should be revoked, he added. I am basically going to cancel with extreme prejudice these
00:28:10.520 evil, sick animals who celebrated Charlie Kirk's assassination. I'm starting that today. That is all. 0.98

00:30:11.720 When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months.
00:30:17.480 I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
00:30:24.040 I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files.
00:30:27.660 I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, 0.96
00:30:33.080 shut up, don't say anything.
00:30:35.740 Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. 0.98
00:30:39.940 I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
00:30:44.740 I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
00:30:51.800 They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
00:30:56.260 But these aren't stories about what's taken from them.
00:30:59.680 They're stories about what it takes to make it out alive.
00:31:03.320 Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:31:17.620 Let's get right back into it.
00:31:21.800 The Trump administration warned that they could even look at revoking existing visas or denying them to applicants if they were deemed to have been making light of Charlie Kirk's death.
00:31:32.980 Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landube posted on X saying that he's directed consular officials to undertake appropriate action, saying,
00:31:40.320 I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing or making light of the event and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action.
00:31:48.540 Please feel free to bring such comments by foreigners to my attention so that the State Department can protect the American people.
00:31:54.900 Like, protect the American people from what? Expressing apathy about a podcaster you all liked?
00:32:00.100 Now, keep in mind that as of recording this, on September 12th, we do not yet know much about the suspect's motives.
00:32:06.500 Stuff is starting to trickle in.
00:32:07.660 But that has not stopped right wing figures from essentially using Kirk's death to call for war and retribution, I guess, against leftists or liberals or Democrats or queer folks or trans folks or people of color or anybody they've decided is against them because they are not white, straight men pushing that party line.
00:32:26.920 The Congressional Black Caucus is calling for an investigation after a spate of bomb threats at historically black colleges and universities, which just makes me wonder since the suspect is white and Charlie Kirk is white and it happened in a mostly white state.
00:32:39.620 Like, why are we in it? But you know what? I don't even really have to ask because I know why.
00:32:44.240 This is a war. This is a war, said Alex Jones.
00:32:47.120 Steve Bannon said, we have to have steely resolve. Charlie Kirk is a casualty of war. We are at war in this country. We are.
00:32:53.740 And of course, our old pal Elon Musk had this to say.
00:32:56.920 If they won't leave us in peace, then our choice is to fight or die.
00:33:00.680 You probably saw Trump's weird, probably AI video where he said,
00:33:05.240 For years, those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis
00:33:10.040 and the world's worst mass murderers and criminals.
00:33:13.140 This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism that we're seeing in the country today.
00:33:17.720 What's also so wild to me about this is the fact that the left,
00:33:21.920 save for some, like, random people on social media,
00:33:24.960 have all condemned what happened to Charlie Kirk.
00:33:27.720 They are not celebrating it.
00:33:29.500 But that's the thing.
00:33:30.440 It genuinely does not matter really what is said
00:33:33.700 or what even really happened, actually.
00:33:36.060 What matters is this big narrative that is clearly being weaponized.
00:33:39.700 His death is being turned into a tool,
00:33:41.500 a way to justify harassment and threats and censorship of anybody who disagrees.
00:33:46.180 The content of our words, what we actually say,
00:33:48.660 the nuance of our positions,
00:33:50.260 none of that seems to matter anymore.
00:33:52.300 What matters is that we are targets for simply existing in a world
00:33:55.880 where we don't really want to make him a martyr
00:33:58.260 or erase the reality of the things that he said and did.
00:34:01.920 It's also just a complete rewriting of history.
00:34:04.660 Currently, we do not know much about the motive,
00:34:07.280 but let's just say it was political violence.
00:34:10.160 How can you live in a country like the United States
00:34:12.600 and act like political violence just started this week with the murder of Charlie Kirk?
00:34:17.180 It's like a far-right extremist never broke into Nancy Pelosi's home and bashed her elderly husband's head in with a hammer.
00:34:23.720 And you know what people on the right did after that happened?
00:34:26.520 Donald Trump Jr. responded with a tweet, mocking the attack, saying the Internet remains undefeated,
00:34:32.540 basically implying the whole thing was a joke rather than a serious assault on an elderly old man.
00:34:37.560 Elon Musk shared a link to a false report claiming that Paul Pelosi was involved in a romantic or sexual dispute with a male sex worker,
00:34:46.280 a claim that has been thoroughly debunked.
00:34:48.640 And Clay Higgins, the representative from Louisiana
00:34:50.980 who said that we should have no tolerance
00:34:53.000 for political violence, amplified the same thing.
00:34:55.800 And you know what Charlie Kirk did after that happened?
00:34:58.440 He encouraged his audience to post bail
00:35:00.760 for Nancy Pelosi's husband's attacker,
00:35:03.000 who he called a patriot. 0.52
00:35:04.900 Or what about Melissa Hortman, 0.98
00:35:06.660 the Democratic lawmaker who was assassinated
00:35:08.660 alongside her husband and dog just a few months ago? 0.99
00:35:11.760 Why didn't Trump order national flags 0.94
00:35:13.780 at half-mast for her?
00:35:14.920 Why no tributes at Yankees games?
00:35:17.580 In a post after Kirk's death, Gavin Newsom said,
00:35:20.760 the best way to honor Charlie's memory is to continue his work,
00:35:23.740 engage with each other across ideology through spirited discourse.
00:35:27.460 In a democracy, ideas are tested through words and good faith debate,
00:35:31.100 never through violence.
00:35:32.340 Honest disagreement makes us stronger.
00:35:34.420 Violence only drives us apart and corrodes the values at the heart of this nation.
00:35:39.080 But that is my thing.
00:35:40.660 Let's not pretend like Kirk's whole thing was honest disagreement.
00:35:44.020 It is just so insulting to call his brand of debate honest disagreement.
00:35:49.340 He didn't think women should work or vote.
00:35:52.240 When asked about whether or not Black women could be pilots or doctors, he said,
00:35:56.040 and I quote, 1.00
00:35:57.120 I don't want LaQuisha James flying the plane or a Black lesbian operating on me at the hospital. 1.00
00:36:02.760 How is that an honest disagreement? 1.00
00:36:04.880 Do we really need to treat this as spirited discourse and not what it is?
00:36:08.640 A refusal to see entire groups of people as fully human or capable.
00:36:13.360 Calling that debate doesn't just sanitize his rhetoric.
00:36:16.400 It erases the real harm that it causes and the dangerous worldview that it promotes.
00:36:20.780 And worse, it sets the people up that he targeted with this kind of rhetoric to just have to swallow it and call it ice cream.
00:36:27.780 I saw this post from a lawyer named Cheryl Weichel last night, and I think it really makes the point well.
00:36:32.960 Open debate is for economic policy and whether we should charge for public transportation.
00:36:36.940 Open debate is not whether some human beings are lesser than others.
00:36:40.160 Like in Gavin Newsom's mind, how would I even debate that?
00:36:43.380 How would I even have a spirited discourse about whether or not I am a less than human being than somebody like Charlie Kirk because I'm a black woman?
00:36:50.940 And furthermore, I just have to push back on the idea that Newsom raises here that I've seen repeated, like it's repeated in the Ezra Klein piece called Charlie Kirk did politics the right way, that basically posits that Kirk was good and virtuous because he was willing to engage in debate.
00:37:06.720 Let's set aside for a moment that always wanting to debate others isn't an inherently moral or virtuous stance.
00:37:12.920 And like the most annoying people, you know, probably are like, oh, I love to debate.
00:37:16.740 But also, Charlie Kirk was a grown man whose bread and butter was going to college campuses and debating students, teenagers.
00:37:26.020 That's what he was doing in Utah.
00:37:27.620 His whole thing was not standing toe to toe with experts or peers or people with the same access and resources he had.
00:37:34.740 He built his brand on picking fights with kids who are still figuring out who they were and parading those interactions online as if he had scored some great intellectual victory to personally enrich himself.
00:37:47.340 Why do we then have to pretend that that is moral and noble?
00:37:50.740 And that's why I think this moment is such a dizzying one for me.
00:37:54.220 I know I've been all over the place in this conversation because genuinely I am I am something is broken inside of me.
00:37:59.240 I think we're seeing all these people and institutions lionizing Kirk, and I'm not even saying that they shouldn't mourn if that's what they feel they have to do, but lionizing him and whitewashing his hateful rhetoric and reckless tactics that hurt people really makes clear how much these mainstream institutions were not really put off by the kind of life that he actually lived and the kinds of things that he actually said and stood for.
00:38:21.520 And it's a reminder that these systems around us will always celebrate power and spectacle and influence over accountability and that they will reward people who harm others if they do it loudly enough or strategically enough or they do it while they're like young and have kids and a family.
00:38:36.440 But for the rest of us, the ones who, I don't know, want to call out harm or inequality, it feels like the rules are entirely different. 0.99
00:38:44.380 You know, these are the same people that have spent the last decade saying fuck your feelings as a rallying cry. 0.98
00:38:49.060 And I saw a great tweet that put it very well that said, no, no, no, no, no, no. You misunderstood. I said, fuck your feelings. My feelings are very important and must be handled gently like a tiny baby hummingbird. And that is exactly what's going on here, I think. It's fuck our feelings, but their feelings have to be treated with respect or else. Our deaths are political. Theirs are national tragedies. 0.99
00:39:12.100 It's their free speech rights to say whatever they want about us.
00:39:15.380 But if we verbalize a problem with it, we end up on a list.
00:39:19.560 Our heroes will be removed from history books and government websites.
00:39:23.340 But we will be forced to mourn their heroes or else.
00:39:27.040 As I'm recording this, the police have just announced that they have an alleged shooter in custody.
00:39:31.200 So far, all I know right now is that he's a young man who lives in Utah, not far from campus.
00:39:36.340 And he was turned in by his father after he confessed.
00:39:39.180 So the FBI, it sounds like, did not really play a huge role here.
00:39:42.780 I'm sure that we will learn more, but as of right now, we don't know a ton.
00:39:46.620 We don't know why he pulled the trigger or even if it was really him.
00:39:49.660 And I just have to say that this is one of those times that I genuinely fear that our country is heading down an increasingly violent path.
00:39:56.680 And this feels like another big step in that violent direction.
00:40:00.160 The way that people so quickly galvanized around lionizing Charlie Kirk, lying about Charlie Kirk, using his death as a way to bash trans people and further target and surveil and harass them, use their death to call for war, all of that.
00:40:16.400 It just really I'm quite unnerved in this moment.
00:40:19.320 And now that we know that the killer is a white guy from a Republican family, we're watching so many people who were talking tough about wanting to start a war with the left and trans people and this and that and Democrats basically walk that back without any kind of public accountability of why they rushed to say stuff like that when we didn't know anything about what happened yet.
00:40:41.880 For all the hand-wringing about trans people, the suspect is a white guy from a Republican family.
00:40:47.280 So we're already seeing how those same voices who were calling for blood
00:40:50.900 when they suspected the suspect could have been a trans person have now totally changed their tune.
00:40:56.040 Here's what Nancy Mace said before we knew any information about the killer whatsoever.
00:41:00.340 Is there a problem with political violence across the spectrum?
00:41:03.860 Yeah, we're talking about Charlie Crook right now.
00:41:06.060 That's the subject of this that we're talking about right now.
00:41:08.620 Democrats own this 100%.
00:41:10.420 And now that it turns out the killer is a white guy from a Republican family, she says, we all know Charlie Kirk would want us to pray for such an evil and lost individual like Tyler Robinson to find Jesus Christ.
00:41:22.340 We will do the same.
00:41:23.680 And I say all of this to say that we can condemn violence.
00:41:27.480 We can condemn what happened to Charlie Kirk without rewriting the record of who Kirk was or what he actually stood for.
00:41:34.420 Because violence does not wash hate clean.
00:41:37.380 It does not make bigotry noble.
00:41:39.360 It does not turn cruelty into courage.
00:41:42.640 We have a public record of the things that Kirk stood for,
00:41:46.080 the things that he said, the things that he did.
00:41:47.940 We don't have to forget all of that
00:41:49.480 because it makes it easier for the powers that be.
00:41:52.140 I want to close with the words of poet Lucille Clifton.
00:41:55.600 They ask me to remember,
00:41:57.140 but they want me to remember their memories,
00:41:59.180 and I keep on remembering mine.
