00:00:00.000 about a month ago my son was in the hospital for a concussion
00:00:10.000 everything's fine now don't worry thank god glennis actually came down she took the train
00:00:17.760 from new york and she hung out with me in the hospital and as anyone who spent any time in
00:00:22.400 hospitals knows. It's a lot of just sitting around. And after about a day, Glynis and I started to
00:00:30.620 notice something. We have to do an episode on nurse influencers. Oh my god, yeah. It's a thing.
00:00:38.160 Every time I walk by a nurse's station, they're looking at Instagram or TikTok,
00:00:42.820 and they're all following nurse influencers. Yeah. Nurse Blake. No. 1.4 million
00:00:52.340 followers. Nurse Sarah, 1.2 million followers. I mean, and read this article. Now there's so
00:01:03.980 many alternative resources out there. And by resources, I mean nurse influencers and bloggers.
00:01:08.440 You can find education, lifestyle and wellness and beauty tips. There's an influencer for fucking 0.99
00:01:13.100 everything. Rule 35. It's just, it's not going to leave us alone. Everywhere we go, 1.00
00:01:22.900 There's an influencer for that.
00:01:29.460 Remember back in the day when this was a podcast about mom influencers? 0.99
00:01:33.280 Well, frankly, nurses face a lot of the same issues moms do.
00:01:36.740 The reason I got into this was that I could make a side hustle without having to go anywhere 1.00
00:01:41.100 and spend more hours and shifts away from my family. 1.00
00:01:45.240 That's Jennifer Rodriguez. 1.00
00:01:46.860 She's a nurse influencer who I called up to give me an overview on all of this.
00:01:51.840 I started a TikTok in October to help nurses learn how to honestly stay sane while being in this role through this pandemic.
00:02:03.840 We have more patients than we thought we would.
00:02:05.860 They're sicker than we're used to.
00:02:08.320 And therefore, people who are coming in, especially new grads coming into this at this time, oof, I can't even wrap my head around how difficult that must be. 1.00
00:02:17.480 We know that nurses are burnt the fuck out.
00:02:20.520 They are overworked by a terrible profit-driven system, and almost everyone that I talked to said that nurse influencing brightens some really hard days. 0.96
00:02:30.460 And most importantly, reminds them why they actually love their jobs. 1.00
00:02:36.120 But who are these nurses? Let's get the lay of the land here. 1.00
00:02:40.740 Glynnis and I obviously started polling all of the ICU nurses.
00:02:44.580 When I told people I did this, they were like, yeah, of course you used your time in the pediatric ICU to do an episode. 1.00
00:02:51.660 And I was like, yes, because women fucking multitask, my friends. 1.00
00:02:55.460 We multitask. 1.00
00:02:57.100 Anyway, we started asking the ICU nurses about who they were following on Instagram and TikTok.
00:03:02.300 And then I started asking you guys, our audience, about who you follow on the socials.
00:03:07.160 I have been following Nurse Blake for quite some time.
00:03:09.960 I follow Wulanon Warrior and that Sassy MP.
00:03:12.660 I like Mom Millennial, and really the reason I started following them was because of the pandemic.
00:03:18.660 I never followed anybody, you know, quote-unquote nurse influencers prior to the pandemic.
00:03:24.540 The most popular nurse influencer by far is someone called Nurse Blake.
00:03:30.640 He, yes, he, was actually just named the most influential nurse of the year by Nurse.org.
00:03:37.860 Here he is doing a little bit of stand-up.
00:03:39.200 Yeah, Nurse Blake now goes on tour.
00:03:42.260 Sells out theaters. 0.97
00:03:44.200 Joint Commission is this huge organization paid for and by the hospitals,
00:03:48.980 and it's their job to come to look at our hospitals and see if everything's safe.
00:03:55.420 Okay?
00:03:56.320 Increase, decrease injuries, decrease deaths.
00:04:00.680 Really make sure hospitals are a safe space.
00:04:03.460 And they don't come during pandemics because that would be unsafe for them.
00:04:09.200 You want to follow Nurse Blake right now, because in addition to performing stand-up comedy, writing a best-selling children's book, and being named the most influential nurse of the year, he's doing some really, really good work in the world.
00:04:26.140 He's a good person.
00:04:27.600 He recently voiced this commercial about how better nursing staff ratios actually save lives.
00:04:33.080 When you're in the hospital, it's people that save you.
00:04:36.740 Nurses, doctors, staff.
00:04:39.520 But what happens when hospitals are short-staffed?
00:04:42.740 When nurses have 8, 10, 12 patients at once.
00:04:46.360 This is an issue that matters so much.
00:04:49.440 And it forces healthcare institutions to think about how they should prioritize people over profits.
00:04:56.880 But, but, but, but, there's always a but on this show.
00:05:01.600 We've got big buts. We cannot lie.
00:05:04.420 Not all nurse influencers are as beloved as Nurse Blake.
00:05:07.900 In fact, there's been some pretty heavy controversy brewing lately in the nurse influencing industry.
00:05:14.160 Some vaccine-related drama.
00:05:16.700 I think we need to have a conversation on why there are so many anti-vax nurses.
00:05:20.020 Like, it's becoming the elephant in the room. We have to talk about it.
00:05:23.160 The issue is that he issued a new order saying that all health care workers are required to get the COVID vaccination by September 30th or we will lose our jobs.
00:05:31.240 It's not even the fact that you won't listen to doctors and scientists and medical professionals.
00:05:36.980 And it's not even your...
00:05:37.940 I am being escorted out of Kaiser Permanente Hospital for my religious beliefs because I don't want to get a jab.
00:05:46.660 So this is my beautiful wife. This is what she looks like at work. 0.53
00:05:50.100 Protecting those who bash her for not being vaccinated.
00:05:53.520 People that bash me for not being vaccinated.
00:05:56.560 In the midst of the past two years, vaccine culture wars, nurse influencing has become ground zero.
00:06:06.640 I'm Jo Piazza, and you're Under the Influence.
00:06:17.260 Episode 7, Save Me.
00:06:20.180 When COVID-19 vaccines were approved from Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson
00:06:30.400 and first made available to the public,
00:06:33.320 nurses and other health care professionals were among the first to get the jab.
00:06:37.940 Which makes sense.
00:06:39.040 They're frontline workers who are obviously very, very vulnerable.
00:06:43.360 This was a win after a lot of losses.
00:06:46.720 Huge step in beating the pandemic.
00:06:49.260 Right?
00:06:50.180 Not all nurses viewed it that way.
00:06:53.560 Since the vaccines were released, there has been a rise of anti-vax sentiment,
00:06:57.440 not just from civilians, but also from medical professionals.
00:07:02.120 A lot of that anti-vax sentiment was coming through on social media.
00:07:06.060 Some nurses were particularly vocal on TikTok, but it bled over to Instagram too.
00:07:11.440 I'm not a vaccine hoochie. I'm not a vaccine slut. You're not going to put in my butt.
00:07:16.720 Can you believe that this hospital almost tried to take this nurse's freedom away? 0.99
00:07:21.180 Well, fortunately, we live in a country that we have freedom of choice, right?
00:07:25.660 We live in this country, this is freedom of choice.
00:07:27.040 So when I started nursing 23 years ago, it's not what it used to be.
00:07:31.860 It used to be about patients.
00:07:33.760 But then the government decides to jump in and start mandating what we can and can't do.
00:07:41.380 Yeah. Everything that you just heard can be found on the TikTok.
00:07:47.920 In most of these videos, anti-vax nurses are spreading misinformation about the vaccine
00:07:52.520 and telling stories about how they've been let go from their workplace
00:07:56.680 because they refuse to be vaccinated.
00:07:59.900 And you might be like, oh, there's just a few of them.
00:08:02.580 I'm here to tell you it's more than a fringe group.
00:08:05.440 These videos were going viral.
00:08:11.380 this previous summer i had made a video and it actually it got like 5.3 million views it went
00:08:19.640 crazy what it's all over yes um just basically supporting you know medical freedom that everyone
00:08:26.300 should be able to kind of do their own thing it's america you know and to make your own decision and
00:08:30.940 choice that's megan d'andrea she's a nurse often a traveling nurse and definitely a nurse lifestyle
00:08:39.220 influencer. She's got 56,000 followers on Instagram on the account NurseMeggieDRN,
00:08:45.560 and she's got 21,000 followers on TikTok as Patriot NurseMeggieD. She actually had a lot
00:08:53.680 more followers back in 2021, but TikTok canceled her account after she posted an anti-vax medical
00:08:59.780 freedom video. I basically just said that, you know, we should have our own choice and everything.
00:09:05.060 I talked about just, you know, what I see in the field and I, you know, I've seen some, you know, negative reactions to the vaccine and, you know, it is kind of scary and it's not been tested for a long time.
00:09:16.840 I mean, it's just brand new.
00:09:19.020 As a reporter, you know, that job that I've been doing forever, I usually just like to lay out the facts and let people draw their own conclusions.
00:09:27.680 That's my job.
00:09:29.300 But we are also not going to be a platform for disinformation,
00:09:33.220 so I have to say it here that what Megan is saying has been shown by science to be false.
00:09:40.360 Although this is the first time that mRNA vaccines have been widely distributed,
00:09:44.500 they have been in development for decades, rigorously tested, and proven to be safe.
00:09:50.500 Though there have been some negative reactions to the vaccine,
00:09:53.520 those are extremely rare and should not deter anyone from being vaccinated.
00:09:58.560 The vaccines have drastically improved the state of the pandemic in the United States,
00:10:02.860 and yet these anti-vax sentiments still loom large. And among the many, many pains in the ass 0.98
00:10:09.120 about how social media lets misinformation spread, it's that it puts reporters like me 0.85
00:10:14.140 in the position of policing things when that is not where we want to be. But frankly,
00:10:19.640 it was important to do here, and there we are, and there I did. Boom. To be clear,
00:10:25.120 I'm having Megan on this episode to show just how viral this has gone and also to let her say it in
00:10:31.840 her own words because I don't want to just tell you about the nurses with anti-vax views. I want
00:10:37.800 you to hear it because hearing it feels more real. And frankly, I think it's important for all of us
00:10:45.420 to know that these views and these accounts are out there because it's very easy to live in our
00:10:51.140 own bubbles, and not understand how a lot of people are getting their information. So back to
00:10:56.920 Megan. This is actually the first mRNA vaccine that we've ever had. And I'm just, you know,
00:11:03.740 totally against that and totally against, you know, changing anything in the body. So that was
00:11:08.560 a big, you know, sticking point for me. And then I also, you know, I work out all the time. I take
00:11:13.600 vitamins. I'm very cautious on what I eat. And I just like living the natural, you know, healthy
00:11:20.200 lifestyle and have a strong immune system. And like I said, you know, when I had COVID a couple
00:11:25.220 of times and I was fine, and now I have the antibodies active in my system. So that was
00:11:30.380 another point that I'm just, you know, has held me really strong to what I believe in with this
00:11:35.100 vaccine. You know, from my experiences, I think there are a lot of nurses that do feel very
00:11:40.280 strongly, you know, against it. And, you know, I think it's just more so the freedom aspect. And
00:11:45.160 then I think a lot of the nurses feel betrayed in a way because they worked all throughout the
00:11:50.440 pandemic. And now all of a sudden they're being told, you know, hey, like, if you don't get this,
00:11:55.140 your job's not going to be there. In the TikTok that got Megan's account banned,
00:11:59.260 she said basically everything that she just told me. And of course, that got some very intense
00:12:05.360 reactions. On both sides, people felt very strongly like for me and very strongly against me.
00:12:11.000 i think it ended up getting banned i had like 130 000 followers and what happens when your
00:12:16.440 account gets banned what do they say to you they just say i can't remember like the email i just
00:12:22.040 said like you've had too many violations of content or whatever and then yeah you're not
00:12:27.360 able to really you can't access like you can't log in anymore and like the account it'll still
00:12:31.520 like exist on there but it's like it's all blank uh big tiktok nurses didn't like that
00:12:36.880 And they actually, like, stitched the video and recorded it and were posting me everywhere.
00:12:43.000 And, yeah, it was kind of crazy.
00:12:44.900 But in turn, it kind of worked out for my benefit because it brought a lot more traction to all my pages and my views and everything went up.
00:12:53.220 And it also ended up connecting me with some more companies and stuff, too, in the long run.
00:12:58.140 So, yeah, it's been kind of crazy.
00:13:03.520 Some brands did choose to stop working with Megan.
00:13:06.500 But she's still got plenty of sponsorships.
00:13:08.940 In fact, she recently posted a collaboration with the Westin Hotel in Nashville.
00:13:14.400 I'm just, hold on, I'm looking it up on my Instagram right now.
00:13:18.940 In one picture, she's holding what looks like a delicious plate of scrambled eggs and sausage.
00:13:24.040 In another, she's drinking a beautiful champagne cocktail. 0.87
00:13:27.540 And she also still works with a lot of companies that sponsor a lot of nurses.
00:13:32.520 Vitamin companies, wellness brands, shampoo brands, 0.99
00:13:36.480 one that my friend's husband happens to own, and scrubs companies.
00:13:40.380 By the way, scrubs companies, scrubs sponsorships, huge on Nurse Instagram.
00:13:46.000 It is a huge, huge industry that I never, never once have thought about.
00:13:53.100 And to be clear here, TikTok only banned one account for Megan.
00:13:59.360 She was very easily able to make a new account under the same name, but by adding one word.
00:14:05.860 Patriot.
00:14:07.420 So besides losing that first TikTok account and a few of her sponsors,
00:14:11.860 there weren't very many repercussions for Megan for posting her anti-vax content.
00:14:16.860 She still got her job, her livelihood, her followers.
00:14:24.220 I never had any of my employers ever say anything to me.
00:14:27.440 But I know, like, in the viral video, there were people trying to, like, guess where I work and tagging all these places and these hospitals and everything.
00:14:36.520 They were trying to, like, track down where I was.
00:14:38.880 And that was kind of crazy, too.
00:14:40.420 And actually, my LinkedIn account was, like, on fire that week.
00:14:45.120 I had all these, like, CEOs and, like, health care facilities, like, out of everywhere, surrounding states and stuff, like, searching me and everything.
00:14:52.820 It was kind of funny.
00:14:53.980 As of right now, Megan's still working.
00:14:56.700 No one succeeded in getting her let go from one of her jobs. 0.78
00:15:00.060 But it has happened to other anti-vax nurses. 0.62
00:15:03.340 Because nurses who do believe in the vaccine make just as much noise on social media.
00:15:09.120 I want you to grab your phones, open the TikTok, search Vax Freedom, and you'll see them hashing it out.
00:15:17.120 But look, let's be honest.
00:15:18.560 This is a battle that no one really wins.
00:15:21.480 Because in the minefield of social media, the effect of this content is unpredictable and can so easily spin out of control.
00:15:29.800 The nurses who are trying to do good on social media to correct all the dangerous misinformation out there,
00:15:36.280 even they can get attacked and punished for trying to do what they think is right.
00:15:41.780 Even they can lose their jobs.
00:15:46.060 I am currently not employed.
00:15:50.500 I was let go from my position as a director at a local hospice on February 17th.
00:15:57.700 All I can really say is that they didn't like my mouth on TikTok.
00:16:02.120 After the break, we're going to talk to one nurse who stood up against the anti-vax nurses on TikTok and lost her job because of it.
00:16:16.260 The perverse nature of social media is perhaps never better highlighted.
00:16:20.500 than what I'm about to tell you.
00:16:23.400 And this is a story about the discrepancy
00:16:25.740 between how the people who are pushing misinformation
00:16:28.060 are dealt with,
00:16:29.440 as opposed to those who are just trying
00:16:31.900 to provide the corrective truth.
00:16:34.580 My name is Jen.
00:16:36.280 I go by Nurse Tough Love on TikTok and Instagram,
00:16:40.440 and I am a registered nurse in North Carolina.
00:16:44.520 I am currently not employed.
00:16:48.660 I was let go from my position as a director at a local hospice on February 17th.
00:16:55.060 Oh my gosh, how did that come about? What do you feel comfortable sharing with us?
00:16:59.040 All I can really say is that they didn't like my mouth on TikTok. 0.98
00:17:03.140 In 2021, Jen joined TikTok during the pandemic, like a lot of us, because she was bored.
00:17:09.120 She started posting funny videos, including this one kind of comedy sketch
00:17:13.480 about a patient who gets a vegetable stuck in a very private place.
00:17:17.880 It went viral.
00:17:19.020 It got like 2 million views.
00:17:20.240 And I was like, what in the hell is happening?
00:17:23.480 I gained, you know, maybe 20,000 followers in like a week.
00:17:26.540 And I was like, wow, like I have a platform.
00:17:29.700 Like I can use my voice and my knowledge for something other than funny videos.
00:17:34.300 You know what I mean?
00:17:34.840 I mean, I'll appreciate funny videos, but that's not my style.
00:17:38.080 Suddenly, Jen starts seeing a lot of nurse anti-vax content in her social media feeds.
00:17:43.460 And Jen was not having it.
00:17:45.500 I quickly changed my name to Nurse Tough Love, and I gave these nurses tough love.
00:17:50.160 And I mean, you know, many of them did not keep their employment.
00:17:56.160 And so I'm kind of wondering if this is just kind of karma coming back to me because, you know, I obviously did cause a few non-evidence-based nurses to lose their jobs.
00:18:08.140 So when you took on the anti-vaxxer nurses,
00:18:10.960 what kinds of things did you say on the TikTok?
00:18:13.820 And how do you know that they did end up losing their jobs?
00:18:18.500 To be quite honest, I did not report a lot of them.
00:18:22.560 I just made the videos and my followers reported
00:18:25.260 because they were like,
00:18:26.780 oh, she's wearing her badge and her videos, easy enough.
00:18:29.540 Like let's contact, you know, whatever hospital.
00:18:33.400 But the ones that I did report
00:18:35.300 that were just completely just like,
00:18:37.520 Okay, number one, you're in your, you're at work with your badge on, you are spreading misinformation while on the clock, like, that's a different breach of like, ridiculousness, you know, because I do respect one's quote opinions, but not when you're in the medical community, because you've taken an oath to utilize evidence based practice.
00:19:02.100 and people are very like oh my god i can't believe you're causing people to lose their
00:19:07.700 livelihood and i'm like yeah but they're causing people to lose their lives like you know i i don't
00:19:13.700 know which one is uh worse in your eyes but in my eyes it's death you know it's like a a preacher
00:19:21.500 preaching who doesn't believe in god i mean i'm just in awe of you right now like in awe
00:19:28.920 I'm like, you're essentially a superhero.
00:19:30.840 Oh, I don't feel like it right now.
00:19:33.440 It's very, I mean, I've had death threats.
00:19:36.420 The anti-vax community is one of the most vile communities I have ever come in contact with. 0.98
00:19:44.180 If the threats weren't enough, Jen's crusade against the anti-vax nurses eventually cost her her job.
00:19:51.460 Here's how that went down. 0.91
00:19:53.400 As Jen's social media profile was rising, she was also moving up the ladder at work.
00:19:58.660 She'd been working for this company for about three and a half years, started as a triage nurse, worked her way up.
00:20:05.020 And in December of last year, they asked her to take on a director position.
00:20:08.960 And I was like, I'm a single mom. Like, I just don't know if I can balance that.
00:20:14.920 And they, I mean, they begged me and I said, you know what? All right, I'll do it.
00:20:19.560 Right before she accepted the position, officially accepted it, she met up with a friend, a fellow TikToker.
00:20:25.460 we had a great weekend and we just made funny tiktoks right and one of them was the tiktok 0.99
00:20:31.200 trend and it was like this song and it said suck my d you stupid b you remember the go 1.00
00:20:39.180 little rock star i do okay well it was to that tune but it was suck my d you stupid b 1.00
00:20:45.600 and we mouthed it did you say d and p or did you say the words um no i mouth the words you mouth 1.00
00:20:52.720 the words oh you're only mouthing the words okay yeah i mouth the words you're not saying them okay 0.84
00:20:57.160 okay no i mouth the words to the lyrics suck my days and we said to all the nurses spreading 0.69
00:21:05.440 this information that was a caption and that was what caused me my job
00:21:09.560 my boss actually was like hey can we can we zoom real quick and i was like yeah
00:21:20.440 And she's like, I don't know what's going on.
00:21:22.500 Something about a social media account. 0.88
00:21:24.640 Jen's social media presence had never been an issue before.
00:21:28.640 And her boss had previously been completely cool with it. 0.99
00:21:32.340 She kept her workplace off her account. 1.00
00:21:34.660 She doesn't even have her full name on there.
00:21:36.540 And so everything should have been fine.
00:21:39.620 But then something changed.
00:21:42.940 And then all of a sudden, February 17th, she was like, you need to come to the office.
00:21:46.200 And I was like, what's going on?
00:21:47.580 And she called me and she was just like, like beside herself.
00:21:51.400 And she's like, I don't even know what to say.
00:21:53.660 And I was like, what?
00:21:54.800 Just say it.
00:21:55.900 I was like, do I need to bring my badge and my computer?
00:21:57.980 And she's like, yes.
00:21:58.860 And I just started crying.
00:22:00.780 And I was just like, this is, this cannot be real.
00:22:04.820 It turned out that Jen was getting fired less for attacking an anti-vax nurse 0.97
00:22:08.700 and more for maybe the crude language in the TikTok, the D and the B of it all.
00:22:17.580 I am educating evidence-based. I'm upholding the nursing code of ethics. I'm not doing anything
00:22:25.260 wrong other than having a foul mouth. And is it really foul? I mean, it depends. Do you succumb
00:22:32.740 to the purity culture of this? I don't. You know what I mean? So in a way, it's like pushing your
00:22:39.160 beliefs onto me. But she was like, no. I mean, obviously, she didn't agree with any of it.
00:22:45.520 And I said, listen, if this is a big deal, because I took this leadership position, I'm happy to step back down to the position that I was in. Because I for the first time in my life, I feel like I'm doing something like I feel like I'm doing something good and like using my voice. And people are actually learning and listening. And I don't want to get rid of that. So I will step down.
00:23:06.860 So when they called me in, they were like, well, we're accepting your resignation.
00:23:10.500 I was like, I don't know what you're talking about.
00:23:12.420 And they were like, well, you said that you would step down.
00:23:14.580 I was like, well, to my other role, like, because y'all kept saying, like, you know, in leadership, I shouldn't use this language and whatnot, even though I've never used it in the office.
00:23:24.380 And they were like, no, we're accepting your resignation with the company.
00:23:27.140 And they just kept saying that.
00:23:28.280 And I said, no, you're terminating me.
00:23:30.860 You're like, yes, you're terminating me.
00:23:32.900 me like this is not i am telling you i didn't resign like i'm sitting like you provide proof
00:23:38.640 where i resigned and they put so they gave me a severance and sent me on my way oh good yes yes
00:23:45.980 yes yes yes yes yes they weren't going to uh and i was like no of course they were of course they
00:23:50.180 were this is termination and you're going to give me a severance because i'm a single mother
00:23:54.600 and you know and like i understand that you're just trying to protect yourself but i got to
00:24:00.080 protecting myself too. And so it was just crazy. Jen has been very cheery through this, or at least
00:24:08.260 she was cheery with me. But the position that she's been put in is really difficult. Jen's a
00:24:14.860 single mom who is now out of a job. I went back to Gleness to fill her in on all of our findings 0.99
00:24:20.300 since our grand hospital adventure. And she was in shock that the reporting had gone in this
00:24:26.360 direction that it had gone so far from the hilarious nursing memes that we first saw
00:24:31.660 in the pediatric ICU. So what you're telling me is the nurse who got fired got fired for
00:24:40.020 opposing anti-vax nurse influencers on Instagram, but the anti-vax nurse influencer
00:24:46.500 continues to make money off of her social media. Yeah, in a nutshell, that's what happened.
00:24:53.360 And allegedly, though, this company did fire Jen, the nurse, Tupla, for using language. 0.99
00:25:02.980 She said, you know, D and B to mean, you know, suck my D, you stupid B, which they did not find apparently becoming of a nurse. 1.00
00:25:18.480 To a nurse. And that language was directed at an anti-vaxxer who was spreading misinformation about vaccination on her nurse influencer account. 1.00
00:25:28.080 It was indeed. Yes.
00:25:29.680 This seems to sum up a lot of America in this moment.
00:25:36.460 I mean, my head feels like it wants to explode over this, although I can't say I'm shocked entirely.
00:25:42.320 I will say when I hear the anti-vax argument, which always seems to get tied into the word freedom or patriot or something like that, my first response is, should we all have the freedom to ignore stoplights? Would we like the freedom to ignore the people who are checking the safety on a plane? Would we like the freedom to avoid a security check? Like all of these things are...
00:26:08.520 Would I like the freedom to do whatever I want with my uterus?
00:26:11.760 I mean, exactly. Let's see where these freedoms are being applied. Anyway, all of this drives me crazy. And to see it coming from someone who has chosen a career in a science-based industry is so much more frustrating. 1.00
00:26:30.240 and then with the understanding that there's some aspect of anti-vaxxers who believe they
00:26:36.720 are helping people as as incorrect and anti-science as that viewpoint is so all of these contradictions
00:26:45.880 and bad faith operations as we know from this entire series are just exacerbated and exploded
00:26:56.200 thanks to social media thanks to social media and then the person trying to push back loses their
00:27:01.400 job for using some very mild language very mild language yeah yeah i really hope that jen gets a 0.92
00:27:10.680 job soon i just i want i'll do anything to help jen get a new job she's a single mom i mean you 0.76
00:27:17.300 and i both know and we both know from a recent experience in the hospital that you had far more
00:27:23.740 intensity than I did with Charlie, but also my own experience with having an ill parent in care
00:27:28.800 is that nurses shoulder the brunt of so much of everyone's hospital experience. They shoulder the
00:27:34.040 brunt of care. Medical television dramas do not do justice to who's actually doing the labor.
00:27:40.300 And I feel like all nurses should be able to go home much like teachers and like mothers. And we
00:27:46.420 see this with mothers, but not the other two. And just like absolutely rant on their Instagrams
00:27:51.300 about their shit day without being punished for it 0.99
00:27:53.540 or the people they have to deal with 0.99
00:27:54.880 or the people who are making their lives
00:27:57.260 even more difficult
00:27:58.640 in careers that are not paying what they should.
00:28:04.420 Yeah, no, truth.
00:28:06.340 And the other thing that I think we've realized
00:28:08.720 while we're recording this episode
00:28:10.200 is just how real the culture wars are.
00:28:15.360 We knew that,
00:28:16.260 but how amplified they can get on social media.
00:28:19.640 And now what the consequences are, people are losing their jobs, they're getting death threats.
00:28:27.160 And that is such a modern day phenomenon that exists because of social media.
00:28:34.520 There used to be protections for this.
00:28:37.140 You think if a nurse had an interaction with someone in their hospital, there's a lot of protections that exist within the hospital on behalf of the nurse, along with teachers, along with people and companies, along with us in media.
00:28:47.560 Like there are infrastructure protections. They don't exist in social media. So the punishment, the vulnerability you are operating with is as huge as the potential to reach more people. I mean, both of these things are in part and parcel with each other. Man, you are so vulnerable and the risk is really high.
00:29:13.820 The risk is so high because the rules of social media remain so completely arbitrary.
00:29:20.580 It's pretty much always opposite day over there.
00:29:24.040 Platforms have some messaging around misinformation,
00:29:27.100 but then they also leave it up to users to decide what they'll listen to or not.
00:29:32.360 And that is why anti-vax nurses still exist among other nurse influencers
00:29:35.900 who preach evidence-based science.
00:29:38.580 The ones with the worst misinformation are usually the loudest.
00:29:42.940 They make the most noise, and they get rewarded with views and sponsorships, which on these platforms equals power.
00:29:51.180 And when other nurses take it upon themselves to push against their reach, they do so at the risk of facing very serious consequences. 0.82
00:30:00.400 Should these two groups be treated the same?
00:30:03.300 Should they face the same regulations?
00:30:06.220 Should they be allowed to just battle this out on social media where we all have to watch it?
00:30:11.420 Or does someone need to step in?
00:30:13.760 Does someone need to step in and say, hey, not here.
00:30:17.380 Take it offline.
00:30:18.920 As we wondered about this, Glynis let me know that she thinks, yes.
00:30:25.280 I mean, the legal system is so far behind, but try and understand what needs to be created
00:30:30.380 alongside this, who needs to be held responsible, what role the social media companies have
00:30:34.940 in this.
00:30:35.280 But going back to the first episode of this season and talking about a women's day off
00:30:38.960 of work. I mean, how did unions originate? How did all of these laws around workers' rights
00:30:46.020 originate? It was from people refusing, going on strike. I mean, this is, you know, the long
00:30:50.960 history of labor in this country is people removing their services until protections were
00:30:56.680 provided. So again, if all women just stepped off the internet for 24, 48 hours, the panic, 1.00
00:31:03.720 the panic that would grip the higher ups at Facebook and Instagram and TikTok and Twitter,
00:31:11.200 like it would be so enormous. But we already know how these protections originated in the
00:31:16.540 last hundred years. So like how to replicate them in some way in this new world seems
00:31:20.180 like where the focus maybe should be directed.
00:31:27.500 Every conversation I have these days keeps coming back to one thing.
00:31:31.980 We cannot let these platforms guide our lives, our well-being, our cultural values.
00:31:37.840 We just can't.
00:31:38.760 We cannot do it unless we are demanding our own input and agency.
00:31:43.560 When we just blindly take in what we see on social media, we are choosing to hurt ourselves.
00:31:49.180 And so in the next episode, next week, we are again going to make the case to do less on social media.
00:31:54.960 We're going back to our roots, talking to some early OG influencers,
00:31:58.800 And what we're talking to them about is how they're winding down, how they're moving away from the gram, how they're going back to their roots, blogging.
00:32:09.500 It's really just become this survival in a lot of ways, just this war of attrition to see who can keep getting the eyeballs.
00:32:20.020 When you feel like a social media platform is really controlling the game, it's just hard to want to keep playing.
00:32:28.800 And next week, we're going to a part of the internet that is much less politicized than
00:32:33.780 Nurse Instagram.
00:32:35.360 We're talking to design influencers.
00:32:38.040 Love me some home design.
00:32:39.820 No more vaccines.
00:32:41.020 Just pretty kitchens.
00:32:42.660 White walls.
00:32:44.000 I'm a rock and rugger, too.
00:32:45.600 And we're going to take a breath, a step back, and see where this all is really going.
00:32:50.960 See you next time.
