00:02:17.680I'm happy today, too. I feel good today. I feel better about the world than I have in a while.
00:02:23.600And I'm also very excited that your book, A Well-Trained Wife, is going to be in the world
00:02:29.900very, very soon. You know, the word timely is always attached to memoirs. Like,
00:02:36.100is it a timely memoir? And this book just gets more timely as we go. It was already
00:02:43.040it's like on fire two years ago um it's just i can't believe like it's i mean we get to come
00:02:48.720out before the election it's amazing important it's important this book is important and you
00:02:55.080are so right it is more timely than ever it was timely two years ago yeah and then and then it
00:03:00.960just went like timely times a thousand which is amazing for this book amazing for you and amazing
00:03:07.740for women because we need this book. We all need to be reading this book. Men, too. Men, too. It's
00:03:13.660just that most of my listeners are women, except for Brett. So yeah, that's it. Yeah. God bless0.98
00:03:19.180Brett. God bless Brett. God bless Brett. Super under the influence, Stan. So for people who
00:03:25.100haven't heard us talk to each other before on this podcast, I want you to tell them what a1.00
00:03:30.460well-trained wife is about. What can they expect from this book? Yeah, well, on the highest level,1.00
00:03:36.900it's the story of my entrance into and escape from the highest control Christian patriarchy0.88
00:03:41.760that there is. It's the same patriarchy that's coming for our country, which is why I decided1.00
00:03:47.660I really do need to tell this book with the widest distribution possible. I need to tell
00:03:52.100this story. I have a very mainstream evangelical background and got into this very innocently and
00:03:58.700slowly in a way that many, many, many readers will relate to. The reviews come back overwhelmingly
00:04:06.600that people see themselves in the pages. And even though parts of my story are very extreme,
00:04:12.120most of it is not. Most of it is very mainstream and everyday and relatable. So I think that
00:04:19.080because the Christian patriarchy is part of our government at this moment, and they are rolling0.97
00:04:23.780back rights to make us into their model, the only people who can really tell Americans what it's
00:04:30.260like to live that way are people who've been through it. And there's just not a long list
00:04:34.100of people who have gotten themselves out and are able to tell the story well enough to convey that
00:04:39.660message without re-traumatizing themselves. So what's an important part of my story is that
00:04:44.340I escaped and then I did 10 years of trauma therapy so that I can tell you this story
00:04:49.360without harm to myself or to the reader. It's so important. It's so important
00:04:56.580now because we are, you know, on the cusp of this election and make no mistake that the0.99
00:05:03.260Christian patriarchy, is really looking to reshape America in its image, with its values.0.99
00:05:11.000It felt like that was coming for some time, but some time is now here. This is the reality1.00
00:05:18.100that we're living with right now. And I have to say, I am glued, glued to your substack,
00:05:27.920The Anti-Fundamentalist. I was revisiting it, actually, while I was also glued to the
00:05:35.000Republican convention. I found the convention, I found it very watchable. It was. It was
00:05:43.440excellently done television. And we shouldn't be surprised because Trump is a television star,
00:05:50.400is what he is. But talk to me a little bit about this American horror story that we're going
00:05:56.500through of Project 2025, of what you believe we could expect from a Trump presidency when it comes
00:06:05.180to the patriarchy and taking control of women's lives. Yeah, I think that the RNC is a great
00:06:11.720example of the different channels of marketing that they use. So Trump has decided to distance
00:06:17.700himself from Project 2025 as best he can. And the people who are used to listening to his surface
00:06:22.640proclamations might buy into that. A closer look immediately reveals that, you know, 80% of his
00:06:29.440administration was involved in the organization and architecture of Project 2025. The organizations,
00:06:36.140110 conservative organizations behind it, have been working on this for 50 years. So when we
00:06:41.580look at a story like mine that also matches that trajectory of a country that is becoming more,
00:06:46.520an evangelical country, that is becoming more politicized and nationalist as we go,
00:06:51.160in a lot of ways like he's the end all he's the end game of that but they try different ways to
00:06:56.600sell it to us so we've talked about the trad wife movement that's a an attraction like that gets
00:07:02.360women to buy in themselves and go into those rooms willingly because they're they're attracted to the
00:07:07.400appeal but the rnc shows a different brand where he's more bombastic and he and it's like it's
00:07:13.420there's caricatures everywhere and everything's highly entertaining and you feel like you're
00:07:17.180watching worldwide wrestling because there's so much weird performance happening that just
00:07:23.000you can't look away because we actually were we were watching hulk hogan yes yes that's not serious
00:07:30.520government that's not world leadership no it's not nor was my other favorite convention moment
00:07:35.780that i haven't talked about enough yet was when i believe it was the governor of west virginia
00:07:40.440brought his bulldog on stage. And the bulldog sat on the chair next to him while he gave his speech
00:07:48.880sitting down. And I think the bulldog's name was something like Baby Dog. And I mean, it was just
00:07:54.680all in on on Baby Dog. And what it made me think about is that this administration, this group of
00:08:02.920men will treat dogs better than women, frankly. Yes. Oh, my goodness. Anytime I talk about the
00:08:09.040discipline practices in the patriarchy. I hear from dog trainers because the word training is
00:08:14.360involved. I hear from dog trainers who say, oh, no, we treat our dogs way better than the
00:08:19.020evangelicals treat their children. Yeah. What are some of those practices?0.52
00:08:24.480Well, we can go to the like, I'll just go in for it. Blanket training starts. Yeah. Yeah. Blanket
00:08:29.560training starts switching babies in infancy as soon as they can crawl. It is the most extreme
00:08:34.880form of infant spanking but you know everybody's familiar with james dobson and his universe of
00:08:40.720adventures and odyssey and family radio and all of that other stuff from the 80s and the 90s that
00:08:46.540was so much part of evangelical culture that's espousing like the the uh what they call the
00:08:51.500strong-willed child and and extreme discipline um wife spanking is on the other end of that1.00
00:08:57.820women are spanked into adulthood their daughters are spanked by their fathers until that they are0.92
00:09:02.760passed over to their husbands um and then there are husbands that discipline their wives as
00:09:07.340children so i mean there is a wide spectrum with the same the same degrading control at the heart
00:09:16.340of it yeah yeah it is it is and it's true dog trainers do treat their dogs better than oh and
00:09:24.360so does the bdsm community i hear from them too they're like hey in our world we have consent
00:09:28.860and safe words. Exactly. True. In this Christian kink. No, no, no. Christian kink got no safe
00:09:37.020words. No safe words, no consent. I want to talk a little bit about the umbrella of authority,1.00
00:09:45.620the authoritarian power structure that's in alignment with the biblical worldview that is
00:09:52.520currently, you know, taking over the Republican Party. Can you talk to me a little bit about that?
00:09:57.080yeah it's based on the the preposition that uh all power flows through the man that the man is the
00:10:03.880head of the house and the best you can hope for is to be the neck that turns him as a as a woman
00:10:08.300and you've heard us you've heard people like that was in my big fat greek wedding people joke about
00:10:12.060that all the time the man is the head of the household that the woman is the neck which is
00:10:15.500quite frankly a manipulative coercive way to find your autonomy but that's the only thing available1.00
00:10:21.520to women in that model so the umbrella of authority is a top-down power structure where1.00
00:10:25.740god is at the top and then man and then woman and then the children more accurate portrayal is to1.00
00:10:30.940flip it upside down and make it a pyramid scheme um well that would put the children on top that's
00:10:35.580not really what i mean but i mean that the children are the the labor force and the base
00:10:39.200and the and it widens as you get to the bottom because the population widens where the man is
00:10:44.440always on top and all power flows through that man down like it doesn't um it flows to other men
00:10:51.960right right from from from one powerful man to another powerful man and it never touches women
00:10:58.900right right right we're completely outsiders in our own community even though we're half the sky0.97
00:11:04.380half of the population is female and in the umbrella of authority that's not how power
00:11:10.240disbursement works right and i that i think that's what turned my stomach so much uh at0.55
00:11:15.980watching the Republican convention in addition to Hulk Hogan and Baby Dog. And it was seeing the
00:11:24.280camera pan to so many women in the crowd who were willingly giving away their rights, who were
00:11:30.860cheering this on, who I do feel like are being marketed to and branded to and hoodwinked about0.96
00:11:39.980what is actually going to happen if they win. Yeah, that's actually the reason I couldn't watch
00:11:45.340The women that are associated with men in power are all of a kind. They're all the skinny white side piece. Their job is to smile, adore, you know, your job. You have to have this adoration for your patriarch.1.00
00:11:59.500and the the one speech i saw with his granddaughter still displayed this man who breaks every rule
00:12:05.900like he she basically said in an endearing way that he he breaks every rule her parents might
00:12:11.220have for her um it the subjugation the willing the willing subjugation and the and the internalized
00:12:19.740mis misogyny is hard to stomach because the those when you're a child in that environment
00:12:25.920and the woman your mother is the only other adult in the room if she's not willing to advocate for
00:12:32.140anyone and she's just you know bought in for because of her own benefit because it benefits her
00:12:36.540to to keep things keep the peace um that's where the real abuse and neglect really sets in so
00:12:43.760there's nobody there's nobody there left to advocate for the innocent nobody yeah there's
00:12:48.780nobody there to advocate for you we are going to take a quick break and when we get back i want i
00:12:53.980want to talk a little bit more about policy-wise and rights-wise what the world would look like
00:13:02.060under Project 2025. Okay, and we're back with Tia Levins and her new book, her new book,
00:13:17.320A Well-Trained Wife, available in all of the places where you get the books. You were a well1.00
00:13:23.860trained wife until you were not. Before we dive into policy, I want to hear a little bit,
00:13:35.020just a taste for readers and listeners about your moment of conversion from being a well-trained
00:13:41.620wife. When did you make that switch? What was the pivot point for you? Yeah, I think this is so0.98
00:13:49.380important i think it it's interesting that you identify a single pivot and there is a moment
00:13:54.560where i absolutely snapped and took action that was seven years in the making so my mental snap
00:14:00.780happened at one time in 1999 when i could not i was permanently altered through a tragedy in my
00:14:07.880life where i could not go back and become the person that i had been because i was kind of the
00:14:12.000spell was kind of broken um and then seven years passed and a lot of a lot of effort to try and
00:14:17.460conform and fit in and fix what was broken without blowing it up, gets me to this place where I
00:14:23.820realized I was raising the next generation of patriarchs and women who would stay with men who
00:14:30.180hit them. And that I had been spending all this time, my entire abusive marriage, waiting for
00:14:36.820somebody to see me or hear me or rescue me, because that's what we're taught in Christianity
00:14:41.480is that you're waiting on a savior constantly. And that nobody else knew I was going through
00:14:45.960anything. If I was going to change anything, I was going to have to get up off the floor and save us
00:14:50.680myself. And that was really the moment that set everything into motion. Yeah. Yeah. But it wasn't
00:14:57.300an overnight conversion. I mean, I think the important thing is that this takes time, that
00:15:04.000this process of discovery takes time. And right now, one thing that we do not have on our side
00:15:09.640as women in this country is time, to be honest. We do not have time to think, to reflect, to
00:15:17.620plan and escape because the moment is now. And I want to talk a little bit. You have a great list
00:15:25.400on your sub stack. Again, that is the anti-fundamentalist, which is great. It's an
00:15:30.600excellent newsletter. I get very excited every time it is in my inbox. And there's a section of
00:15:38.480of a post that you said, uh, believe survivors, um, believe survivors when they explain, um,
00:15:46.740what evangelical leaders, what kinds of rights they want to take away, what policy will look
00:15:54.780like. Um, and, and, and there's a, there's a whole list and the list is terrifying. It is things like
00:16:00.820women, women do not vote. Women do not have careers or work outside the home. Women do not1.00
00:16:08.360accuse men, women do not say no. What are some of the other policy things that we could see put
00:16:15.420into place? It's the stripping away of any agency. So if you imagine that you wake up in the morning
00:16:22.320and you decide what you're going to do for the day, that's gone. On a policy level, you're not
00:16:27.500traveling from state to state. You're not taking charge of your own health care. If you have an
00:16:31.940emergency, there are other considerations ahead of your own survival that will have to be made.
00:16:36.980And one of those is, you know, are you pregnant with a life force?
00:25:28.640I mean, I think that what a lot of people don't realize right now is that this election is going to come down to about 6% of suburban moms in, you know, six different states.
00:25:44.060The hope that I felt today was, and we're recording this on a Monday, on the Monday where right after President Biden said he would not be running, and I am wearing a t-shirt that I got from Emily's List years ago, and it says, elect women.
00:26:04.700and i walked down the street in philly today and i felt like fucking rocky okay i had people
00:26:12.780cheering me on in my elect women shirt and i do totally believe that this energy is what is going0.84
00:26:22.180to carry us forward we needed this energy we were burnt out we were not we were not cohesive
00:26:28.520and now that we finally have a path forward that is not an old white man and i am saying that with
00:26:34.380so much love for Joe Biden. I love Joe Biden. I think he was an excellent president. I think he
00:26:38.360did really tremendous work. But we need a youthful vibe. We need a different energy and we need a
00:26:45.800reason to get women to the polls. And now we have one. And I think it is time for us to capture that1.00
00:26:50.960energy. Yeah. And she's already doing the job and she's already doing a great job. And I just
00:26:56.520have so much confidence in women being able to clean this up. Women are the ones that have1.00
00:27:01.960suffered the most underneath it. And we can fix that. And if that is a Black woman is my favorite,1.00
00:27:07.640they have led the way so many times. And I will back that all day long. I'm here for you.
00:27:13.800In solidarity. In solidarity forever and ever. I'm also very excited about the potential news.
00:27:20.300I mean, this could be out of date by the time we run this, but about the potential news that
00:27:23.860Josh Shapiro could be the VP. He is my governor in the great state of Pennsylvania. I love me some
00:27:29.460some josh uh and i would be very excited about that this is an exciting good to hear yeah that's
00:27:35.200very good here i feel like anybody she chooses as her running mate i will love because i love
00:27:40.100her decisions i love her leadership so and i trust her i trust women i trust yeah i trust women i
00:27:45.760trust women except i don't trust the women that were on the floor of the republican convention0.94
00:27:49.940oh my god i mean i feel for them i would lead them out of the wilderness i wrote this book
00:27:56.540for women who are in the wilderness and i will be there alongside them helping them break free
00:28:01.360because i was there i was i was a young republican and then i was not allowed to vote because the
00:28:06.860patriarchy narrows and tightens its grip so i really take this as i feel this in my body i've
00:28:11.660had this journey in my body and the fact that i can stand in a women's march now and say this is
00:28:16.660what democracy looks like is hard-fought freedom that i want for everyone so yes yes yes yes and0.99
00:28:24.580Yes. I love this book. I love you. I could talk to you all day long, but you've got to go do
00:28:29.000another interview because you're busy right now. So many interviews. And I love them all. And I
00:28:33.180love the opportunity to share this. And thank you for purchasing my book. It's available everywhere.
00:28:37.600Yes, I read the audio myself. Everyone asks that. Did you read it? I did. And I just really look
00:28:44.420forward to hearing how it lands for readers. It's going to land. It's going to land with a
00:28:48.680freaking boom, baby. It really is. I did not come here to be shy. That's the truth.
00:28:53.560No, no. You know what? None of us came here to be shy. We came here to be loud.
