00:00:00.000 class is in session ho ho ho and welcome to unlearn 16 the christmas edition classes in
00:00:09.500 session podcast what am i going to teach you guys today well i'm going to teach you what any good
00:00:13.880 teacher should always teach all of their students at christmas time which are the 10 top christmas
00:00:21.800 movies everybody should have on their roster if you're not celebrating christmas all the happy
00:00:27.160 two weeks off to you if you're celebrating Hanukkah. Happy Hanukkah. I hope it is filled
00:00:31.180 with joy and magic and all of the things you possibly can want. But for those who love
00:00:36.480 Christmas and for those who love Christmas movies, let's go through this list. Before
00:00:41.500 I go through this list, for those of you who are watching, I'm going to show you something
00:00:45.580 really important. For those of you who are listening, I'm going to try my best to describe
00:00:48.440 it. Check out this new t-shirt I just got, guys. It's Wham! The Christmas Edition. Look
00:00:54.540 at that at your local H&M, I think right now. Go get yours. Nothing's better than a Wham Christmas
00:01:03.620 Carol, just so everybody's on that same page as well. All right, guys, I'm going to go through
00:01:07.760 my top 10. I am going to go 10 and I'm going to count down and give you my reasoning behind each.
00:01:14.160 And if you haven't seen all 10, for the love of all that is joyful at Christmas, please run out,
00:01:20.640 buy it, stream it, borrow it, call your mom up and get it. I don't know, but I'm going to start
00:01:25.720 with number. Actually, I'm going to start with an honorable mention. And the honorable mention
00:01:30.040 is Die Hard. Is Die Hard a Christmas movie? Absolutely it is. I do not have it at home with
00:01:35.180 me because I keep it at school because every single year the kids beg me, beg me to put Die
00:01:44.300 Hard Christmas on in the background because we're usually doing a whole bunch of things that day at
00:01:48.100 school, so I have to put it on, and I have to give it an honorable mention, because it happens at
00:01:51.980 Christmas, and yippee-ki-yay. All right, you ready for my number 10? So I'm going to go 10 down.
00:01:58.620 So 10. It is The Santa Claus with Tim Allen. Listen, Tim might have had some problems in his
00:02:07.100 past. I don't necessarily love his tweets nowadays, but The Santa Claus is pure awesome fun,
00:02:15.260 And is one of the very few movies, if not one of the two in my list, really, that are sort of newer movies, that are newer movies that have breached my childhood core in order to, you know, sneak its way into the top 10.
00:02:31.940 And the scene, well, there's a whole bunch of scenes in this movie I love, but probably my most, the best scene is when he takes the, he burns the turkey dinner and he has to go to Denny's and get dinner there. And all the single dads who have burnt themselves on the stove are all sitting there. And I mean, my parents were divorced growing up.
00:02:49.460 And so this idea of that kind of dynamic or that kind of hilarity already has in some built-in, I guess, humor for me anyways. And then to watch that transformation. To watch the transformation, and this is where I get obviously metaphoric because heaven forbid I take anything literally.
00:03:11.420 This is the transformation of an adult who has lost that, who has lost that childlike, that's what it's about, right? That childlike sense of wonder. We're not just talking about Santa here. We're talking about a belief in something more amazing than making money, more powerful than operating a business and knowing what you're going to do.
00:03:33.320 it's this childlike wonder that I think when we really think about Christmas or when I think
00:03:40.640 about Christmas, that's the beauty of it, isn't it? Like that's what we're all trying to grab a
00:03:47.320 hold of. That's not the lesson we're trying to find. That's that feeling we're trying to find.
00:03:53.760 And that's why a lot of us go back to our childhood. And a lot of us, when we do Christmas,
00:03:59.520 we make it about the kids and we make it about their creativity and sense of wonder and sense
00:04:06.980 of magic. It makes all of us feel good. That's the bottom line. That's what it does. And this
00:04:12.420 movie does it better than most. And I've been watching recently, and when I go back to this,
00:04:16.960 I've been watching recently the TV series that just came out. Highly recommended. Very enjoyable
00:04:22.600 to watch. All right, number nine. I hope you guys are trying to guess with me at home as I go through
00:04:26.460 all these. Are you ready? Are you ready? Love Actually. Listen, for those who say holding up
00:04:33.660 those cue cards was horrible and stupid and ridiculous, I don't know who you people are. 1.00
00:04:39.720 I don't know who you are that doesn't see the perfectness in that moment. I don't know who I 1.00
00:04:46.920 want to hold cards. Like, I mean, I think maybe I'll just hold cards up for Anna at some point
00:04:51.760 Because I just, it was just this perfect moment of caring more about the other person than
00:04:58.160 you cared about yourself and caring more about being able to, I'm going to get really soppy
00:05:04.960 in this episode, being able to care about somebody so much that you're able to put away
00:05:12.780 what you need, what you want, what you think love is supposed to look like because what
00:05:19.040 they want and how they love and what they need is more important. And to understand that you can
00:05:24.900 love somebody, but not have it look exactly how you want it to look. I think that's probably
00:05:30.980 all of our problems, right? I think a lot of our unhappiness doesn't come from not, you know,
00:05:39.160 it doesn't come from what we don't have. It comes from the ideal of what we think we're supposed to
00:05:46.120 have, what it's supposed to look like, what it's supposed to resemble. And when it doesn't measure
00:05:51.240 up to that, somehow we lose sight of how amazing and sort of perfect something can be if we could
00:06:02.980 just for a minute stop comparing it to what we wanted it to be or what we thought it should have
00:06:07.820 been in the first place. And I think about the way this movie's done and all the interconnectivity
00:06:13.740 and how you find out that they're all connected to the end.
00:06:16.820 I'm not sure, but I feel like this was one of the first movies that did this.
00:06:21.120 When did this movie come out?
00:06:22.740 I can't even read.
00:06:24.320 I almost said 2450.
00:06:26.220 I don't think it came out in 2450, guys.
00:06:29.760 I should have checked this prior to it because I don't have glasses on
00:06:33.340 and I can't read when this came out.
00:06:35.280 I want to say 2001, maybe.
00:06:37.880 But it's just a great movie for all of those things.
00:06:41.500 I mean, that drummer kid was pretty awesome too. He learned how to, can you imagine learning how
00:06:45.880 to drum just because you want to be close to the singer? I mean, really, can you imagine if I just
00:06:51.060 like, I want to be on stage with Anna so badly that I just learned how to do an instrument?
00:06:55.940 Maybe I'll pick up the triangle or something and I'll surprise her with that. Just so I can back
00:07:00.280 her up just the one time, but nonetheless, number, what are we on? Eight. Are you ready? Now guys,
00:07:06.240 from here on in, we go old school. If you're thinking I'm a new Christmas kind of person,
00:07:11.160 A, you forget I'm 47. B, you forget the authenticity of childhood and the memories that the interconnectivity that that formulates in my head. I can't break that. So the rest of these are pure childhood memories. Are you ready?
00:07:29.940 Miracle on 34th Street.
00:07:31.640 And yes, the black and white version for those who are just watching.
00:07:34.400 I know they did a really good reboot.
00:07:36.480 It was all right.
00:07:37.680 But there is something about watching this in black and white that I think this guy actually was Santa.
00:07:44.120 It was amazing.
00:07:46.580 And again, it goes to the same thing the Santa Claus goes to, right?
00:07:50.000 it goes to that beautiful idea, the center of the world and the beauty of a kid's perception
00:07:59.360 of the world around them. And if more adults would just put down their cynicism and just put
00:08:06.380 down their skepticism, I mean, wouldn't they be happier? Wouldn't we all be happier? Does everybody
00:08:13.160 know this was a remake of Holiday Inn? I never knew that. I had no idea that it was a remake of
00:08:18.160 that. Was it a remake? Was that a remake? No, I got that mixed up. I would edit that out. But
00:08:24.600 you know what? I don't mind sounding like an idiot on my podcast. This was not a remake of 1.00
00:08:29.300 Holiday Inn. I'll get to that in a second. But you watch it in black and white. You guys ever
00:08:33.680 watch a black and white movie and think that it really happened? Is that just me? When I watch
00:08:38.800 black and white movies, they seem more real. I don't know if it's the type of acting or the fact
00:08:44.540 it's in black and white that strikes me as a documentary. I don't understand what happens to
00:08:48.260 me, but I watch it and I'm just like, yeah, no, this really happened. 1947. I think this is the
00:08:56.080 year my mom was born. Don't tell her I told you that. All right. It's number seven. Are you ready
00:09:01.720 for number six? Number six is a tearjerker. And I don't necessarily watch it every year 1.00
00:09:07.300 because it makes me cry every year, but it's got to be. Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life.
00:09:13.280 Black and white again, obviously. I love Jimmy Stewart. Love him in so many movies. I really do like it when he's in a comedy, but It's a Wonderful Life is this beautiful story. If you haven't seen it, heaven help you.
00:09:30.060 It's this beautiful story of a gentleman who messes up his life.
00:09:36.540 Everything's not going perfectly.
00:09:38.480 He ends up losing this money while it gets stolen.
00:09:40.900 And he thinks that the world would just be better without him.
00:09:45.000 And he thinks if he wasn't born, his family would have had it better.
00:09:48.940 He wouldn't have messed up the family business.
00:09:51.260 He, you know, everything in the world would just get better because he feels as though he's messed everything up along the way.
00:10:00.160 So at some point in this beautiful story, an angel steps in and says, OK, let's see what the world looks with, you know, what the world would have looked like without you.
00:10:10.700 so they take him out and he's able to see the world and see how sad and how desperate and how
00:10:20.860 lonely all of these people would have been without his presence in that time in that space
00:10:27.100 what the heck i'm like tearing up why am i tearing up i think
00:10:32.040 uh maybe it's because we've you know obviously recently we've lost uh a lot of very seemingly
00:10:42.180 amazing and happily you know these these they seem very happy and together people and
00:10:49.060 they've chosen to leave this planet um and i don't nobody will ever know why but they can't
00:10:57.820 feel they have value. They feel like, I can only imagine they feel like they think the world would
00:11:06.400 be better without them. And if we all had a moment to sort of get plucked out of that and to
00:11:11.920 understand that most of us on this planet are able to, without even knowing it, are able to
00:11:22.480 cause a ripple effect that helps and that encourages and that supports and that brings
00:11:29.000 light to somebody's life. And you might not even know, like it might be a cashier at Walmart.
00:11:35.780 It's not necessarily your partner or your siblings or your kids or your mom or like it could be
00:11:42.560 anybody. And you take that one person out and you lose that ripple. And it's amazing how quickly
00:11:49.680 all of the good that a person has done in the world and all of the, you know, the moments,
00:11:56.440 these tiny little moments that you would never, ever think twice about somehow ripple and cause
00:12:03.780 this amazing impact with everybody around you and then everybody that affects them and then them.
00:12:13.000 You know, when I think about It's a Wonderful Life, sometimes I think I would like to see it
00:12:17.820 not redone heaven forbid don't do that but i like the idea of this hear me out similar premise
00:12:25.580 a person thinks their life doesn't matter thinks that what they've done doesn't matter because
00:12:30.940 this very much focuses on his immediate life right but can you imagine this if i take myself
00:12:39.660 let's say myself out of the mix and instead of it just being my inner circle that we focus on
00:12:46.700 You focus on one person that I affected, that's not my inner circle.
00:12:52.260 And then the next part of the story is that person who wasn't affected by me now has changed.
00:12:59.320 What they didn't do as a result, how does that change?
00:13:02.760 And following that ripple all the way to a final culmination of an end in which it shows you that the minor sort of butterfly effect
00:13:15.320 of what I've done in my day and how that spawns somebody else to do something different and then
00:13:22.880 somebody else to do something different as a result of them. To me, that's a new Christmas
00:13:28.920 movie. I think I just gave the plot away. If anybody understands what the heck I'm talking
00:13:32.520 about, I think I just gave the plot away of a great Christmas movie idea. But I think that's
00:13:37.420 important. And I think at Christmas time or any time of the year, I think one of the most important
00:13:42.420 things we can do and we can hopefully try to ground people and hopefully try to
00:13:47.480 be more loving and more considerate and more caretaking is to make people understand that
00:13:54.420 their existence on this planet, no matter what hard time they're going through or their people
00:14:00.440 are going through, it matters. It has weight, it has purpose, and it has joy. Because I think
00:14:07.440 that's all anybody wants to know. You know, a lot of people ask me, um, deep questions all the time
00:14:13.500 on the podcast, on this podcast, or maybe in my lives. And they'll say, Joanna, do you believe
00:14:19.300 in God? And I'll say, no, I don't think about it really. And they say, well, how do you have
00:14:23.940 purpose? And I legitimately believe that the purpose I feel is that ripple effect. The purpose
00:14:32.300 I feel is, and I'm not unselfish, I'm not perfect by any stretch, but the purpose I feel is,
00:14:40.980 can I make that person feel better? Can I make a connection with that person? Can I make that
00:14:48.840 world better? Can I make that student's life better? My mom's life, my partner, and then the
00:14:55.700 ripple effect of that, that's how you change the world. That's purpose to me. I don't, purpose to
00:15:03.880 me isn't after I'm not here. Purpose to me is what do I do here and how do I impact as many people as
00:15:11.480 I possibly can? There's purpose. I don't need anything grander than that. Do I know about
00:15:16.380 the afterlife and all of those things? Nope, I don't. But it doesn't, it doesn't matter. I don't
00:15:22.540 mean that in a dismissive way. I mean that as in a practical, my purpose is right here, right now,
00:15:29.320 every single day with every single interaction that I have. So if I make those count,
00:15:35.920 well, what else, what else could I possibly need to do? Right. All right. What is that?
00:15:43.360 Number six. We on number six, six. All right. Number six. You ready? This is an important one.
00:15:51.360 And I don't even know if Anne has seen this, but one of my favorites, White Christmas.
00:15:58.740 Why do I love White Christmas so much?
00:16:00.800 For every single reason you can possibly imagine.
00:16:03.360 But number one, my number one reason for loving White Christmas is very simple.
00:16:07.840 We play it every year on Christmas Eve.
00:16:10.060 Every year on Christmas Eve, my whole family comes to my house.
00:16:13.720 We all spend Christmas Eve together.
00:16:15.800 We put on White Christmas.
00:16:17.240 my mom and her sister sing Sisters, which if you've seen the movie, you know the scene I'm
00:16:23.420 talking about, out loud, horribly. It is awful. They can't sing. We all laugh at them. But it's
00:16:32.540 that kind of tradition that you're just tied to forever, right? And it's also a beautiful movie.
00:16:42.240 it's a beautiful movie about, again, it's a ripple effect, right? If anybody hasn't seen it,
00:16:47.880 I don't know where you've been for the last 50 years, but it's a beautiful memory or, sorry,
00:16:52.800 a movie about this general. So World War II general gets out of the war and goes and opens
00:16:59.800 this inn, but there's no snow in Vermont and he's losing his inn and he doesn't know what to do.
00:17:05.220 And all of his plans are going because, you know, it didn't snow. So no snow in Vermont,
00:17:10.440 nobody comes to his inn. So two of his infantry soldiers, I don't know what they're called guys,
00:17:16.920 the guys under the captain guy, they're Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. And they're big
00:17:23.320 stars, right? They're variety show stars. And they find out that he's in trouble and they pull
00:17:31.520 together a million dollar show at the drop of a dime because they can, and they move it all up
00:17:38.160 to Vermont, so they could save his in. Why am I crying? What is with the tears? If you're watching
00:17:45.520 and I'm sorry, I don't, listen, I'm emotional today. I don't know what's going on, but I'll
00:17:52.680 tell you, everybody says, what's my favorite song in the show? And everybody's favorite song is
00:17:56.820 White Christmas. Mine's, we'll follow the old man wherever he wants to go. Because that's, to me,
00:18:03.000 that's the point of the world we live in. People who you love and who you will move mountains for
00:18:11.980 when they need it. That's it. That's the only movie that ever needs to be made. I'm, maybe I
00:18:18.160 need a, you know, a session where I can like cry it out or something. All right. I'm not going to
00:18:23.320 cry at this next one. Maybe, maybe. I don't know what's going on today, guys. All right, here we go.
00:18:30.500 Go see White Christmas.
00:18:31.520 If you haven't seen White Christmas, again, I don't know what you've been doing.
00:18:34.800 We're going to do some funny ones.
00:18:36.500 Because heaven forbid, I can't keep this up.
00:18:40.520 Frosty the Snowman.
00:18:43.740 Number five, Frosty the Snowman.
00:18:46.240 Why do I love this so much?
00:18:47.820 Number one, happy birthday is beautiful.
00:18:50.420 It just puts on the hat.
00:18:52.400 I have a tree topper downstairs.
00:18:53.880 I should have wore it for this.
00:18:55.140 He puts on his hat.
00:18:56.280 He comes to life.
00:18:57.460 It's this magician's hat.
00:18:58.960 and every year he comes to life at winter and then he melts away and he goes away, which is depressing.
00:19:04.760 Now, somebody told me, and I looked this up, guys, maybe you can help me with this,
00:19:09.540 because I don't necessarily associate Christmas and Christianity.
00:19:13.300 I understand they go hand in hand. It's just I'm not religious.
00:19:16.200 So for me, I don't really think about a lot of the underpinnings, like anything religious,
00:19:22.080 especially in a snowman movie.
00:19:24.140 But somebody said to me, and then I looked it up, that when he says happy birthday,
00:19:28.960 technically, the inference is supposed to be Jesus's birthday. Did you guys know that?
00:19:36.240 Was I the only person that didn't know that? I don't know. But first of all, I love the cartoon.
00:19:42.240 I love the cartoon footage. This is back in the day. They actually drew the cartoons,
00:19:45.800 which makes me even happier. And it's beautiful. The whole story is beautiful.
00:19:52.560 They say Frosty. I don't want to ruin the end if you haven't seen the end, but I guess I just did.
00:19:58.180 but frosty the snowman is just one of those things and there's no way you listen to that
00:20:02.340 song and you don't feel good there's just no way and every single person makes a snowman this way
00:20:09.640 right that's the only way you could possibly make a snowman forever anyways maybe there's
00:20:15.900 a religious underpinning i wasn't aware of all right number four are you guys ready
00:20:20.240 the best the funniest christmas vacation listen and and i know there's people out there and i
00:20:32.400 don't understand them my wife being one of them that don't get the humor of this that don't get
00:20:37.920 the pure joy of this the the perfect mix and you guys are all about to experience it if you do the
00:20:46.960 Christmas thing of you want the perfect Christmas and your family's insane and you throw them all
00:20:53.480 into the same ball and it always goes to hell. It really does. You always fight. You always
00:21:00.060 bicker. Somebody's not getting a present they want. Somebody's taking advantage. Somebody
00:21:04.480 burns the turkey. When he cuts that turkey open and it just opens and
00:21:09.700 it's the best when the grandma and i'm getting worried this is gonna be my grandma with the
00:21:18.400 grandma the aunt wraps the cat up and gives it to them as a present and he escapes and gets
00:21:24.420 electrocuted and guys look there's funny and then there's just real there's just real guys
00:21:33.560 And Christmas vacation is just real.
00:21:37.820 That's the beauty of it.
00:21:39.020 You even have the boss that doesn't want to give out bonuses.
00:21:41.840 Everybody knows that.
00:21:43.340 Everything about it, fine.
00:21:45.180 It's exaggerated. 0.95
00:21:46.220 It's ridiculous. 0.96
00:21:47.260 It's campy. 0.96
00:21:48.360 But it is a perfect rendition of, I want a perfect Christmas, but I got to have it with my family.
00:21:57.140 And when you put those two together, guys, you'll have funny memories that last forever,
00:22:02.060 but you will never, ever, ever have the perfect Christmas.
00:22:06.700 In fact, I would probably advocate that the perfect Christmas is that, that if you didn't
00:22:13.060 have the fights and the, the, the jello mold with the cat food in it and the ridiculous
00:22:19.680 presents and the, you, and the grandparents sleeping in your bed and you being guys, I
00:22:26.260 just don't think, I don't think that it would ever be a perfect Christmas. The idea of walking out
00:22:32.260 and getting that tree and the kids' faces are frozen and they can't go any further, but he wants
00:22:37.980 it for his family. That's it. That's Christmas right there. And I think the more we try to push
00:22:46.120 for everything to go smooth, you don't remember those Christmases. Those Christmases aren't funny.
00:22:52.620 Those Christmases aren't memorable.
00:22:55.240 They just, you want everything to be happy at the end, but you want that kind of excitement.
00:23:00.420 And there's no way, I don't know how big your families are, but there's no way you can put
00:23:03.340 20 people in the same room and buy gifts and eat and share memories without it going a little awry.
00:23:11.920 You just can't do it.
00:23:14.220 All right, number three, guys.
00:23:15.880 I kind of want you to guess at my number three before I say my top three.
00:23:20.780 You know the ones I haven't picked yet, but I feel like there's going to be some you're going to get very grumpy that aren't on my top 10 at all.
00:23:27.660 I'm going to go with number three.
00:23:29.360 Are we ready?
00:23:30.460 Have you guessed?
00:23:31.600 Stop the video, go guess.
00:23:32.960 Here we go.
00:23:34.240 Charlie Brown Christmas.
00:23:35.800 Listen, this Christmas tree right here, that Christmas tree, the sad Christmas tree with Linus' blanket wrapped around it, that is Christmas.
00:23:47.320 It just is.
00:23:48.460 Guys, if I could get a real life tree like that, like I mean a ginormous one, that's
00:23:54.200 what I want.
00:23:54.880 You know, when people say, what do you want on your lawn, have a Christmas ornament or
00:24:00.080 like decorations, I want that tree life size and I want to wrap a blanket around it and
00:24:06.420 I want one ball hanging off it and a light shining on it.
00:24:09.720 That's my perfect lawn.
00:24:11.500 If there's anybody that knows how to make that, I would love to purchase one.
00:24:15.140 um but it's funny because i don't know how many people get the point of this like
00:24:22.440 what this how this tree is so so representative of what i think this is supposed to be about
00:24:32.360 whereas most people you know they talk about family they talk about friends they talk about
00:24:37.540 all these things but when you look at this tree and how sad and pathetic it was but this is the 0.97
00:24:43.740 one that he chose. Guys, that just goes to the heart of who I am, I think. That's how I, like, 0.88
00:24:50.880 a lot of the toys I've ever bought were in broken packages. I just feel like if more of us could see
00:24:57.700 the beauty in things that weren't perfect, wrap them in a little bit of a blanket and keep it
00:25:04.560 anyway, wouldn't this world be almost a perfect place? Right? Doesn't everything that's just not
00:25:12.780 perfect and it's not the thing that everybody wanted and if we just gave it a chance it becomes
00:25:18.760 the perfect thing it becomes the perfect thing because because it's not the thing that matters
00:25:23.820 it's the it's the love and the the commitment that we put into the thing am i making any sense
00:25:32.800 i feel like i'm just ready to cry this whole episode what is the matter with me
00:25:36.480 but also i also own lion linus's blanket or a version thereof so i get that even that blanket
00:25:45.360 means something to me but you can put on this this record which i have this record any year
00:25:52.240 and it just makes everybody everybody smile you know and you gotta love snoopy but it just makes
00:26:01.420 everybody smile my second favorite character just so everybody knows no it's not the one it's not
00:26:06.460 Peppermint Patty, even though y'all are thinking that. It's Pigpen. I go Linus, and then I go
00:26:12.580 Pigpen, and then I go Woodstock. All right, number two. Have you guys guessed at number two?
00:26:18.960 All righty. We're down to the top two. At number two, it is the original, because I'm a purist.
00:26:27.240 How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Come on. Guys, his heart grew three sizes that day. Are you joking
00:26:35.460 me with the dog and the and the who's and the meaning of christmas and saving cindy loo who
00:26:43.220 this is it this is the perfect christmas story it is it's also perfect because i do listen to
00:26:51.500 it on record like i'll just put it on audio and it's amazing but this is the perfect christmas
00:26:57.960 story. It is funny. I also, I'm going to give a side nod to Jim Carrey's version, because again,
00:27:06.060 I'm not a big fan of reboots, but the live action with Jim Carrey did an amazing job.
00:27:11.740 What I liked about the live action is it did the backstory of the Grinch. You kind of have to
00:27:17.580 think, right? That backstory of the Grinch, that's what built him. That's what made him
00:27:22.680 so horrible. The guy's so horrible. Here's my question. Number one, he's so horrible. He has 0.99
00:27:28.780 a dog. The dog seems to like him. But number two, if everything the Grinch gets is because it's
00:27:35.460 garbage from the Who's, does that mean they threw away the dog? Did the Who's throw away the dog? 0.85
00:27:41.440 I know that the Who's become very, like, are sort of bad people in the Grinch,
00:27:45.820 Jim Carrey's version. But how did he get the dog? I'm going to need that answer at some point.
00:27:51.400 but the Grinch, great. And there's no, I don't know if there's a better Christmas song than
00:27:56.800 You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch. And number one, number one, period. There is no argument. There
00:28:06.940 is no anything that can be done to debate or contest. The number one Christmas movie of all
00:28:15.520 time is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the claymation version. I don't want any other
00:28:23.260 version than this. Than this. It is brilliant. And there's so many things. Number one, the gay elf.
00:28:35.400 Everybody knows that being a dentist is a euphemism, right? The island of misfit toys. 1.00
00:28:41.360 The elephant with spots? The Charlie in a box? The cowboy that rides an ostrich?
00:28:49.900 Guys, this movie was made, what, 1960 what? How old is this movie? 1964.
00:28:59.880 1964. And we still haven't learned the lesson of the Island of Misfit Toys.
00:29:05.480 as a society we we know to include what elephants with spots but we don't know how to apply this to
00:29:14.180 real life yet why is this it's because everything that makes us great is in this movie rudolph's
00:29:24.560 diversity and his red nose necessary all of these toys on the island of misfit toys even the bumble
00:29:31.500 who puts the thing on top of the tree because he's so tall every single creature and and and 0.77
00:29:38.460 piece of existence in this movie proves what the more diverse and the more freedom we give people
00:29:47.820 to be authentically who they are the stronger the entire group gets and the happier everybody
00:29:53.220 becomes why can't we implore this in life this is it this is the meaning of life right here
00:30:00.180 And I have a second question, and I'm going to put this out to somebody. I think we should make a part two. That's what I think. I think there should be a part two of this, and I know you're going to say, yeah, there was, Joe, there was this, there was that. No, no, no, no, no. First of all, I want it to be claymation.
00:30:14.860 can we all is it a rule that we can't go back to claymation is it a rule that we just can't
00:30:23.120 like go back a little bit and do something tangible and hands-on rather than on the
00:30:28.680 computer or cgi or cartoon whatever i want to go back to claymation and i want i want another story
00:30:37.620 I do. I just want another story. I don't want anything fancy. I don't want anything. I want
00:30:45.160 an authentic part two to this story. He was shunned because they, you know, it's really sad.
00:30:53.820 When I was watching the new Santa Claus, they made reference to this and they said something
00:30:57.940 to the effect of the reindeer were never the same after the 64 Rudolph was released because
00:31:04.520 It makes the reindeer seem really horrible, you know, because they made fun of them.
00:31:09.340 But guys, the musical score is amazing.
00:31:13.120 Everything about this movie is perfect.
00:31:17.740 Everything is perfect.
00:31:19.120 There is not one flaw in this movie.
00:31:21.980 I really don't.
00:31:22.580 Somebody's going to tell me about 18 Flaws, I'm sure.
00:31:24.880 But this is an amazing, and it's not just about Christmas.
00:31:28.220 I think the reason why I love it so much is because it is symbolic and metaphoric for who we should be, you know, how we should include, how we should love.
00:31:45.380 And if you don't want to do it to be a good person, cool.
00:31:47.640 Do it for the good of the reindeer.
00:31:49.960 And I mean that metaphorically.
00:31:52.060 Do it for the good of the team.
00:31:53.660 The team gets better if we stop trying to get in each other's way about wanting to be a dentist when you've always been told you're an elf.
00:32:04.980 I was watching one of my students today do a piece of art for a project that we're working on.
00:32:11.100 I had no idea that she was this good.
00:32:13.120 And I'm watching her draw. 0.97
00:32:15.180 And I said, holy crap, you are amazing. 0.93
00:32:17.960 Is this what you want to do? 0.96
00:32:20.080 And she said, yeah.
00:32:21.600 I said, but?
00:32:23.380 She goes, well, I go, your parents want you to do a business degree?
00:32:27.180 And she looked, she goes, how did you know?
00:32:28.800 And I said, well, because your parents want you to have money.
00:32:31.920 They want you to have security.
00:32:33.340 They want you to be safe.
00:32:34.720 They want all of that.
00:32:36.200 And there's something about this, about being an artist, let's say, that doesn't necessarily
00:32:41.000 facilitate that kind, that drive.
00:32:44.540 And I said, but can I say one thing?
00:32:48.560 Number one, you don't need, if you go off to do business school, you don't need school to be an
00:32:54.140 artist, but you can do both. You can get a business degree. You can learn about that stuff, and you
00:33:01.020 can still hold on to this. You can take electives. You can take summer courses. You can do both.
00:33:08.100 Don't let, sometimes what you feel needs to be done, don't let that get in the way of what your
00:33:16.580 heart knows that you're guys and you'll see it eventually but what you are brilliant at and what
00:33:22.700 you're so clearly passionate about i said one day you could be an artist and and i mean and like you
00:33:31.660 know that's your gig you could run a studio you could have your own gallery and if you get your
00:33:38.780 business stuff cool then you know what you can also do you can also be your own business manager
00:33:44.060 You can also control your own. You can understand the business side of the art world. And that's cool. That's powerful. That means that no other person will be able to control, manipulate, or otherwise usurp the art you can do.
00:34:04.040 and you will just then have more power and more control over your future and your life.
00:34:11.400 I say that to kids all the time who want to be musicians or want to be actors or artists or
00:34:16.100 whatever, all these things that their parents are like, no, no, no, no, no. First of all,
00:34:20.420 you can always find avenues to get more educated that has, let's say, some external practicality
00:34:29.000 to it but all the while be pushing to what your dreams are and what you're passionate about
00:34:36.440 so you can control that avenue more you want to be your own you're gonna be an actor cool
00:34:41.240 know what an agent is you want to be a musician cool know what a business manager does or know
00:34:47.000 what a booking agent does or there's so many different ways and the more you understand it
00:34:51.880 in its totality the more you are the author of everything you want to do in this world
00:34:58.440 And the more you can control, the more power you have in your life and the closer you will ever hit your dreams.
00:35:05.640 And I think Rudolph and Hermie, mostly it's Hermie.
00:35:10.900 Let's be honest.
00:35:11.560 I think Hermie might be the, you know, the clear hero of the piece.
00:35:18.880 The more you can do that, the more you can understand that you'll eventually control your life.
00:35:25.020 and the more that you can control and the more passion you can put into all of those aspects,
00:35:29.880 the better your life will be. So, I mean, I might be getting a call from a parent later saying,
00:35:36.580 what do you mean you told her to still draw? But yeah, still draw, guys. Still draw.
00:35:43.120 Figure out the important, passionate, amazing things that you put into this world that make
00:35:48.880 your heart sing. Figure out how to do them. Figure out how to do more and expand that knowledge and
00:35:54.760 expand that passion and then do it with 100% of your heart. And if you can do that and help people
00:36:03.420 along the way and make sure you're making an impact along the way and causing that lovely
00:36:08.700 ripple effect that I think really all these movies are really about, then that's perfect.
00:36:16.140 And on that note, I hope you guys have an amazing Christmas, an amazing Hanukkah,
00:36:22.240 an amazing vacation, anything else you are celebrating. And I hope you keep your passions
00:36:28.240 and your love and all of that close to your heart. Have a great Christmas, guys, and I will see you
00:36:34.680 next Tuesday. Same Santa time, same Santa number, day. I really messed that up, didn't I? That's
00:36:41.640 okay. I don't edit everything. Have a great holiday, guys. Dismissed.
