00:01:36.680 Hello and welcome to Vulgar History, a feminist women's history comedy podcast. 0.99
00:01:41.400 my name is ann foster and this is season five our topic is vulgar history internationale 0.51
00:01:48.460 scandalousness without borders tits out sans frontière and this is another episode inspired
00:01:57.140 by a suggestion from a tits out brigade member uh alicia or maybe alicia i want to thank her 0.66
00:02:05.660 for bringing this story to my attention and i have to say um in a very attention-grabbing way
00:02:10.240 and this is why i suggest if you're gonna be offering names of people you think would be
00:02:15.460 good subjects you really want to just succinctly explain to me why they're cool and alicia just
00:02:20.240 basically said i think you should do inez de castro the zombie queen of portugal and i was
00:02:26.240 like i'm sorry the zombie queen of portugal and i was in and that's that's what we're doing spoiler
00:02:32.540 zombie queen of portugal so we're looking at inez de castro after alicia brought her to my attention
00:02:38.880 And also thank you to Alicia for answering some questions about Portuguese culture and helping me with figuring out things like the significance of Inez.
00:02:47.920 So my other sources include an episode of the Stuff You Missed in History class podcast, Wikipedia, theroyalarticles.com, and also dailyartmagazine.com.
00:03:01.420 So as part of our international season, this story takes us to some places we've been before, but not in a time period that we talked about before in this podcast.
00:03:10.580 So this is Portugal and also some parts take place in the kingdom of Castile, both of which are in the north slash middle of what is modern day Spain.
00:03:20.760 Sorry, Portugal is not in Spain.
00:03:23.140 Portugal, the kingdom of Portugal is basically where Portugal is now.
00:03:27.280 It was just a bit bigger then.
00:03:28.360 um castile is in the north middle of modern day spain and this is in the 14th century so which is
00:03:35.200 like 100 years before isabel of portugal was trapped in her ghost castle from that previous
00:03:40.740 episode so these are all new royal people to learn about in this era so the iberian peninsula
00:03:48.880 which is what we would now see on a map as spain and portugal just kind of like that big
00:03:55.960 square shape sticking off of western europe was divided into several kingdoms from west to east
00:04:02.780 these kingdoms were portugal which is where modern day portugal is but i think bigger than
00:04:08.880 galicia leon castile which you've heard of before and aragon which you've also heard of before
00:04:14.840 as per usual they each had their own king always a king i think never queen and so these little
00:04:21.880 kingdoms had various alliances and feuds everyone was related to everyone through marriage um for
00:04:29.640 alliance reasons and stuff but anyway little kingdoms always at war with each other this is
00:04:35.360 way before um Isabella and Ferdinand came along and consolidated it all this week's heroine is
00:04:43.900 Inez de Castro Perez de Castro who I'm going to call Inez de Castro because that is how she is
00:04:50.860 best known she was born in galicia i assume i mean probably because her father was a galician
00:04:57.920 nobleman and his name was and i mean my portuguese accent is non-existent but your girl's giving it
00:05:06.340 her best here her father was pedro fernandez de castro one of three people i think potentially
00:05:13.360 four people in the story named pedro but he's not in it after this paragraph so don't worry about it
00:05:18.500 papa pedro papa pedro was descended in an illegitimate way from the kings of castile
00:05:24.680 leon and galicia and this is a situation where even if you're the illegitimate son of a king
00:05:31.640 you still get um lots of power and prestige um but he was not himself a king or a prince
00:05:38.800 he had a wife named isabel pense de leon was she related to the explorer i mean everyone's
00:05:45.680 related to everyone so probably that is not who inez's mother was inez's mother was papa pedro's
00:05:51.520 mistress who was a portuguese noblewoman named el donza lorenzo de valadares so she had several
00:06:00.440 siblings some full siblings some half siblings who included a sister juana de castro and two
00:06:06.320 brothers alvaro and fernando who are going to become important later on so just pin that for
00:06:12.780 later on so Ines was born in 1320 again about 100 years before Isabel of Portugal and the ghost
00:06:19.900 castle in terms of other people who've talked about on this podcast 1320 was very close to
00:06:25.720 the same time that Joanna of Naples was born as per ever who knows what her childhood was like
00:06:33.280 because I can never find out that information about anyone for this podcast but we do know
00:06:38.540 that when she was about 20 years old or so she was sent from galicia to portugal to serve as a
00:06:44.660 lady-in-waiting to her cousin i'm not exactly sure how they're cousins but all the nobles in the
00:06:50.260 whole iberian peninsula were all related somehow and her cousin was constanza manuel of vilena
00:06:56.320 vienna a note on constanza who's kind of like an important secondary character in the story
00:07:03.360 so constanza was basically the same age as inez um as a child she'd been married to
00:07:10.780 her cousin not inez another cousin again just everyone's related anyway constanza had been put
00:07:17.820 in a child marriage to a person who would later become king alfonso the 11th of castile but he
00:07:24.900 was not yet the king he was i guess the prince or the infante but so they were married for just two
00:07:33.800 years and then alfonso had the marriage dissolved so he could marry maria of portugal who gave him
00:07:40.740 a son pedro of castile this is the second pedro in the story p2 and it wasn't very straightforward
00:07:49.200 forward to just like get rid of constanza like divorce not an option i think they must have had
00:07:56.320 the marriage annulled anyway or he tried to constanza was trapped in a tower mark that off
00:08:04.280 in your bingo card um in toro so he just kind of was like i don't want to be rid of constanza
00:08:09.720 anymore i'm just going to lock her in a tower and marry maria i guess um but she had a good dad there
00:08:15.860 are one of at least two good dads in this story constanza's father waged war against alfonso
00:08:22.540 for years um for doing this for ending the marriage and for trapping her in a tower
00:08:29.640 eventually alfonso and constanza's dad reached a peaceful understanding after mediation and
00:08:35.960 constanza was released from prison i don't i don't have the year written down but she's probably like
00:08:41.100 you know 17 at this point um but remember alfonso dirtbag um he married maria of portugal
00:08:50.000 anyway so maria of portugal's dad another good dad learned that alfonso is treating maria badly
00:08:56.480 um and because maria was from portugal uh this meant that the government of portugal was now mad
00:09:06.820 at the government of castile because alfonso was just fucking everything up ultimately this led to
00:09:15.840 portugal making a deal like the country the government of portugal making a deal with
00:09:22.100 constanza's father all of this led to constanza's second marriage again she is a teenager and her
00:09:28.620 marriage is to pedro the heir to the throne of portugal and this is the main pedro we're just
00:09:33.980 going to call him pedro the other pedros there's papa pedro there's p2 this is the main pedro and
00:09:41.160 this is the wedding that kicks everything off so constanza aged about 20 is being married to pedro
00:09:48.040 similar age and constanza's cousin inez was sent to be one of constanza's ladies-in-waiting
00:09:55.300 so the chessboard is all set up because apparently from the first time their eyes met inez and pedro
00:10:03.160 of Portugal fell instantly and passionately in love um apparently he was drawn to her heron-like
00:10:10.660 neck which is a very poetic thing who knows what she was drawn to you know maybe he had nice
00:10:17.740 eyebrows I don't know but bear in mind she came to town to be a lady-in-waiting to Constanza
00:10:24.200 her cousin who is marrying Pedro but Pedro was drawn immediately to Inez um she was his one true
00:10:31.540 love but for political reasons he knew he had to marry constanza so i really feel badly for
00:10:36.220 constanza in terms of like just bad luck two husbands in a row um and even after they were
00:10:42.260 married pedro apparently neglected her in order to focus all of his attention on inez so there
00:10:48.320 is a legend claiming that pedro used to send love letters to inez through a pipe that carried water
00:10:53.920 from like one building to another building so like romantically i don't know letter in a bottle
00:10:59.480 type situation that would kind of go along the like the plumbing from one building to another
00:11:06.040 but um that is probably not true because the building they say he was sending it to like
00:11:11.800 these are two buildings connected by plumbing but it is wasn't staying in that place but here's the
00:11:17.600 thing so this story is wildly popular and has been for centuries um amongst portuguese literature
00:11:28.780 so some of the most beautiful pages of portuguese literature have turned this um love letter in a
00:11:34.040 bottle going through let's see so allegedly the two buildings are connected are the quinta de
00:11:38.700 pombal and the monastery of santa clara of velha and so this the monastery of santa clara of velha
00:11:44.760 has become the backdrop of a lot of the stories the retellings of the saga of pedra and inez
00:11:51.060 because that property used to supply water through an aqueduct that connected the royal palace and
00:11:55.960 the monastery so like if you're going to send love letters and bottles that this building would have 1.00
00:12:00.320 to be involved later on this building comes up as well because spoiler eventually inez is going to
00:12:06.300 die and allegedly the water in the aqueduct turned red after her death but she's not dead for a long
00:12:12.780 time now and so it's just kind of this awkward love triangle between cousins so Constanza gave
00:12:21.540 birth to a daughter named Maria and then she gave birth to the first son who she named Luis
00:12:28.120 and then in a cunning maneuver which I respect aimed at trying to end her husband's love affair
00:12:35.300 Constanza invited Inez to be the godmother of the newborn son what's cunning about that is that
00:12:42.480 in the eyes of the catholic church which is the church they were part of um a godmother is
00:12:48.200 considered a member of the family so if inez is considered a member of the family then that would
00:12:52.660 render her affair with pablo incestuous and then they would have to stop constanza thought but this
00:12:57.980 whole scheme which i respect um did not come to much because baby louise died after a few weeks
00:13:06.360 and that's super sad for everybody obviously meanwhile so this has been going on for I think
00:13:14.340 four years Pedro and Inez wildly in love potentially sending letters through aqueducts
00:13:19.940 this was not good for business like the family business of Pedro which was trying to avoid
00:13:25.620 war between Portugal and all the nearby kingdoms so Pedro's father tried to separate them
00:13:31.580 which he did his attempt was he banished Inez from court to go off and live in Castile but
00:13:39.540 guess what distance could not stop their passion and Pedro just peaced out of Portugal to go visit
00:13:44.300 her as often as he could meanwhile Constanza who I really truly feel bad for in this situation
00:13:51.040 because she never asked for this situation to be in she was in failing health she gave birth to
00:13:58.120 another son named fernando and then died two months later so i don't think it was like a death
00:14:04.280 and childbirth scenario as much as it was like giving birth put a strain on her body and she
00:14:10.140 was already ill anyway constanza r.i.p you deserve better out of literally everyone in your life
00:14:15.060 except maybe her dad who seemed like an okay person but with her dead now we can all just
00:14:20.100 like ship inez and pedro without feeling bad about it because he's not married anymore so
00:14:25.720 pedro and inez also pretty psyched about this development because he was no longer married so
00:14:32.020 he got inez brought her back to portugal and they moved in together in coimbra which is a riverfront
00:14:37.600 city in central portugal where they lived in the palace santa clara of velha the one from before
00:14:43.360 where people with the aqueduct so like inez didn't live in there before but now they live there
00:14:49.740 together as a little happy family they didn't get married or did they we'll return to that point
00:14:56.840 later they were just kind of living together seemingly Pedro's father kept trying to arrange
00:15:01.820 a new marriage for Pedro to a noble woman or princess from another kingdom because that was
00:15:05.540 like the job of their to the throne is to like make alliances through marriage but Pedro refused
00:15:10.640 to take a wife who wasn't Inez and he was not given permission to marry Inez because
00:15:15.240 as a non-royal she was not deemed eligible to be queen so married or not these two settled into a
00:15:22.580 domestic situation in which Inez had four children Afonso who died in infancy Beatriz
00:15:29.080 Joao and Diniz when they were hanging out together Pedro became close to Inez's brothers
00:15:35.060 the De Castro brothers remember Alvaro and Fernando and the brothers uh just seems like
00:15:42.220 you know it's like pedro is getting like an outside opinion after having lived at court for
00:15:46.420 a while and in his brothers potentially in his herself was involved as well um they tried to
00:15:52.760 convince him to try and claim the throne of castile which pedro technically could do because
00:15:57.360 he was the grandson of sancho the fourth of castile um who i believe inez was also descended
00:16:04.180 from in some way but everyone is related like don't worry about it pedro was like you know what
00:16:10.880 great idea i think i will try and usurp the throne of castile but the thing is of course if he tried
00:16:16.620 to do this that would damage the already fragile relations between portugal and literally everywhere
00:16:21.600 else but pedro was like you know what i'm gonna do it and he declared his intentions to take over
00:16:26.940 castile and leon which were like a combined kingdom the king of castile and leon at this point
00:16:32.980 is of course someone else called pedro um and in fact it is p2 so it's pedro of castile
00:16:42.460 um who is the son of constanza's first husband remember he was terrible with maria of portugal
00:16:51.080 the woman he left castanza for so p2 is the king of castile and leon so pedro's dad was not into
00:16:58.180 the whole taking over castile scenario and in fact he thought that this was yet more evidence
00:17:03.820 that inez and her brothers had too much influence on pedro he also worried that inez and her
00:17:08.800 brothers might try and insert her children into the line of succession for the throne of portugal
00:17:13.300 replacing constanza's legitimate children so remember constanza had two surviving children
00:17:20.660 one of whom was fernando the boy who'd been born two months before she died but um both of her
00:17:30.100 children had health issues and were apparently sickly remember constanza had been sickly as well
00:17:35.120 so maybe they like inherited something from her or maybe the fact that she'd been sick when she
00:17:39.240 was pregnant anyway fernando was heir to the throne but he was sickly but in nasa and pager's
00:17:45.420 children were all apparently uh healthier so that might be used peter's dad thought as an excuse to
00:17:53.660 try and get inez and peter's children to become the heirs to the throne instead of fernando 0.76
00:17:57.820 but also peter's dad was like it wouldn't be hard to kill little fernando because he's so sick
00:18:03.860 already and he was worried that inez's brothers might like literally try to kill fernando which
00:18:08.600 after after the ditta of it all from last week it's like you know what little baby princess and
00:18:15.500 kings like get murdered in these stories so it's a clear risk so pedro's dad was worried that
00:18:23.760 fernando is little baby fernando is going to be killed by the de castros basically all the
00:18:29.020 portuguese nobles were worried about the consequences of inez's brothers and inez
00:18:34.740 like what was their influence over pedro because everything seemed kind of headed towards civil war
00:18:39.360 and pedro refused to marry someone other than inez which was not helping matters out because like if
00:18:44.800 he had married someone from another kingdom then that would have maybe made people less likely to
00:18:51.140 go to civil war but so what happened is that pedro's dad and his advisors were becoming desperate
00:18:57.960 to find a way to quote liberate pedro from inez and her brother's influence and not a very creative
00:19:05.400 group what they thought of was let's just murder inez so initially pedro's dad was reluctant to
00:19:12.740 agree to such an extreme action against the mother of his grandchildren like thank you but
00:19:18.420 january 7th 1355 pedro was away on a business trip his dad called the counselors into a meeting
00:19:26.520 and at the end he finally agreed to send three of his courtiers so people named pero cuelho
00:19:33.940 alvaro gonzalves and diogo lopez pacheco to coimbra to the castle with aqueducts in order
00:19:41.580 to kill inez and i think king dad came along too i think he was there i think they all went together 0.95
00:19:49.220 so anyway so they arrived and inez appeared surrounded by her four children and she appealed
00:19:54.780 to the king who was there yeah so the king was there she appealed to the king um and he was just
00:20:00.720 like oh do i want to kill like my son's beloved and the mother of my four grandchildren who were
00:20:07.100 so cute and right there finally the king left the room saying to the others do whatever you want 0.91
00:20:11.960 and as soon as he had turned his back the sentence was carried out inez de castro was executed
00:20:18.240 and so this took place in the estate of santa clara of velja where they had been living together
00:20:27.780 since the death and the place from the story of the aqueducts but a myth would develop that
00:20:34.440 associates inez's death with another place called the quinta das lagrimas the estate of tears
00:20:40.160 where people believe her blood still stains the red stone bed of the spring on this estate where
00:20:45.260 she's said to have cried out for the last time while being pierced by the daggers of her killers
00:20:49.320 um and then the whole thing about the water ran red etc like you might be like and this is
00:20:59.740 like 20 minutes into an episode and the main character is already dead but here's
00:21:04.660 you forgot zombie queen of portugal the story continues so inez may be technically dead but
00:21:12.060 story is far from over so one account suggests that pedro remember he was on a business trip
00:21:17.540 when this all happened had gotten a heads up about the murder but he thought it was a lie
00:21:22.660 and didn't believe it so did he get a heads up before i don't know but regardless when he learned
00:21:28.320 that inez had been actually been killed the terrible news drove him into a fury obviously
00:21:33.220 so knowing that his father had ordered the killing slash been there pedro staged a revolt against the
00:21:39.100 king slash his dad for several months with the support of inez's brothers troops swept through
00:21:44.960 the country and laid siege to the city of porto finally it all ended when his mom queen beatrice
00:21:50.920 intervened to end the revolt and bring about a reconciliation between father and son
00:21:55.800 and pedro formally promised to forgive the incident i feel like queen beatrice
00:22:00.740 what mediation skills like how on earth would you have gotten this to happen good job
00:22:08.920 so pedro pardoned the men who had killed in a's and everything settled down on the royal family
00:22:15.940 for two years but two years later um king dad died pedro became the king and guess what pedro
00:22:24.260 didn't mean it when he said he forgave them because he was ready for vengeance so as soon
00:22:29.640 as he was crowned and in spite of his promises of forgiveness pedro did a trade um sort of like a
00:22:35.340 prisoner exchange with castile because he found out two of the assassins perro coelho and alvaro
00:22:40.640 gonsalves had been living in castile and so he was like i'll trade some prisoners from portugal
00:22:45.400 if you give me those two guys and castile agreed the third assassin diego lopez pacheco had fled
00:22:52.840 to aragon and pedro was not able to secure his return but he had two of the three killers
00:22:57.560 perro and alvaro were both subjected to torture then were gruesomely executed in a way that
00:23:03.380 paralleled how pedro felt when inez had been killed um which is he had their hearts ripped out
00:23:10.220 so from one the heart was cut out and ripped out of the body through his back and from the other
00:23:16.020 the heart was cut out and pulled through the chest so pedro is just like this is how i felt
00:23:21.820 when inez died like my heart was ripped out of my chest so guess what ripping your heart out of
00:23:26.920 your chest um which honestly is like if you don't have a partner who would do that if you were 0.91
00:23:33.380 murdered then like are you in a good relationship is the question i would pose to all of you so all
00:23:39.320 this happened in front of the royal palace um pedro watched this all while having dinner which
00:23:44.700 is like a pretty distressing yet iconic thing to do so this event is why pedro became known as pedro
00:23:53.640 the cruel but here's the thing so there were three king pedros in this era at this time
00:23:59.700 there's our pedro there's p2 and then also the king of aragon was guess what also called pedro
00:24:04.820 so it's like was our guy pedro the cruel like because each of these three have at some point
00:24:10.360 were written about by somebody as pedro the cruel so we're writers just confusing them all like is
00:24:14.620 this what happens when everyone is cousins and they're all called pedro i don't know does just
00:24:19.300 somehow the name pedro the cruel in portuguese rhyme or something anyway so pedro aka pedro the
00:24:26.580 cruel but other than this one thing this one like pretty brutal thing um it sounds like our pedro's
00:24:34.580 entire reign was evidence of his benevolent character so he's also sometimes called pedro
00:24:39.680 the just so like okay um but story's still not finished so in 1360 pedro publicly announced
00:24:48.620 that actually he and Inez had been secretly sexily married two years after Constanza died
00:24:55.120 and everyone's like wait we thought we were just like living together like that's
00:24:59.460 the whole thing because you couldn't marry her because she couldn't be the queen and
00:25:03.700 Pedro is like haha but we were secret sexy married and I have witnesses so a bishop and
00:25:10.200 one of the bishop's servants were presented as witnesses of the wedding although nobody
00:25:13.860 seemed to remember the date when it had happened um this announcement was backed up by a totally
00:25:19.320 not forged document from the pope showing that pedro had gotten consent from the pope to remarry
00:25:24.900 and everyone was like okay i guess inez retroactively was your wife which makes her
00:25:31.340 a person who has been dead for five years our queen so our queen our queen is now a dead person
00:25:38.480 yes so this is how again five years after her death inez de castro was declared pedro's
00:25:45.580 legitimate wife and therefore the queen of portugal um this was as you might assume the
00:25:52.060 only time a dead person was crowned queen of portugal but also and probably the reason why
00:25:58.740 pedro had one of the reasons pedro had done this was this legitimized their three surviving children
00:26:03.380 because the secret marriage the alleged marriage had happened before the children were born so now
00:26:09.280 they were no longer illegitimate they were legitimate children um but now that inez was
00:26:14.100 the zombie queen she was permitted to have a much grander final resting place than what she'd been 0.71
00:26:19.060 first given and so pedro ordered her body to be exhumed and taken to the monastery of santa clara
00:26:26.140 and coimbra taken from the monastery of santa clara and coimbra to the monastery of alcoba
00:26:32.020 Alcobaza, where Inez was reinterred in an extraordinary ceremony on April 2nd, 1361.
00:26:40.280 Chronicler Fernão López described it, and I'm just going to like read what he wrote because
00:26:44.840 it's a beautiful piece of writing. Pedro ordered a tomb of white marble,
00:26:49.460 finally surmounted by her crown statue, as if she was a queen, and then he caused the tomb to be
00:26:53.980 placed in the monastery of Alcobaza and made the corpse come from the monastery of Santa Clara of
00:26:59.200 coimbra escorted by many horses and noblemen and maids and clergymen and all the way through a
00:27:05.520 thousand men were holding candles in such a way that always the body was enlightened and thus it
00:27:10.880 arrived at the monastery which was 17 000 leagues away from coimbra where the body was buried with
00:27:15.940 many religious services and great solemnity and it was the most magnificent translation ever seen in
00:27:22.000 portugal the extraordinary splendor of this ceremony was so impressive that um a person
00:27:30.180 who wrote the a history of portugal in 1893 described the scene with a metaphor inez de
00:27:36.680 castro was led to el cobas between two lines of stars and i mean that's the kind of love
00:27:43.920 we all deserve like somebody's going to rip out the hearts of your killers and get a thousand
00:27:49.120 candle holding guards to escort your grave 17 000 leagues like this is why
00:27:55.300 i'm strongly considering giving pedro the lady jane seymour outstanding supporting performance
00:28:03.700 award because all of all the heroines of every episode deserves this sort of treatment the tomb
00:28:12.760 itself is gorgeous i will 100 post a picture of it on instagram and maybe also on the website
00:28:18.860 just so you can truly or just like google it like in his de castro tomb it is gorgeous so
00:28:25.480 my best attempt to describe it pedro made sure that in his royal title queen was visible on the
00:28:31.940 tomb and then ordered that his tomb be laid next to her so they could be facing each other or sort
00:28:36.960 of across from her so they could be next to each other for all of eternity the the tomb itself it's
00:28:42.760 it's like a lying down statue so it's covered of limestone from coimbra so it's it depicts so it's
00:28:50.560 like a lying down inez is like lying on top of this like big limestone thing um surrounding
00:28:57.280 her statue like the her personage are six little angels who are sort of taking that care of the 1.00
00:29:03.120 creases of the royal clothes and raising her head a little bit as though to make her like 0.87
00:29:08.080 eternal slumber more comfortable her statue has a serene face um let's see the tomb itself is
00:29:17.420 supported by six hybrid beings that have human faces and animal bodies on the like sides of sort 0.98
00:29:24.180 of the um the bottom of it it's like a big box with like her lying on top and so the big box
00:29:31.180 part on the bottom depicts in carving um scenes of the life of jesus christ um so one of the scenes
00:29:40.460 is the final judgment there's a belief that with this last scene pedro wanted to show that he and
00:29:44.920 inez had a place in heaven unlike the people who did them wrong like his father and her killers
00:29:49.800 on the bottom left of the like box part we can see the dead who resurrect and go out of their
00:29:55.040 graves god is at the top center watching over everything it is a really beautiful piece of art
00:30:01.940 and no one knows who carved it but it's um very spectacular so zombie queen there is one
00:30:11.520 long-standing myth slash legend that prior to being reburied pedro had the corpse of inez
00:30:19.400 placed on the throne put the royal crown on her skull because she'd been dead for five years
00:30:23.740 and force the entire court to swear allegiance to the dead queen by kissing the hand of the corpse
00:30:29.040 this is most likely a legend slash myth because the first time it was ever written in
00:30:35.300 was in a play from 200 years after all this happened like nobody contemporaneously talked
00:30:41.240 about it and the whole beauty of the like internment parade the a thousand stars like
00:30:47.080 i don't think they would pause like pop out her body do this and then put it back in but i mean
00:30:51.340 what a story so pedro lived on for another six years after all of this until he was assassinated
00:30:59.960 um he was succeeded by his son fernando which was the little sick boy whose mother was constanza
00:31:08.520 and no the story's still going on don't worry about it um so pedro like he had his tomb already
00:31:16.780 i would imagine under work um so his team is placed opposite of that of inez and the they
00:31:23.460 were not put side by side as you might imagine but they were across from each other so that
00:31:27.680 because their belief in was that um the day of the last judgment all the dead come back to life
00:31:34.740 and he wanted when the dead come back to life that they would both get up and like sit up you
00:31:39.260 know and like they'd be across from each other and they'd be able to see each other right away
00:31:42.040 his tomb is equally stunning as hers again um i'll post the pictures on instagram and or just like
00:31:49.960 literally google it it's so again it's like pedro lying there on top of like a big box
00:31:54.600 little angels helping make him more comfortable this is like this is not just like describing art
00:32:00.620 podcast there's i'll get to it there's like okay so the same thing like the sides of the box part
00:32:09.040 on the bottom show like jesus christ in his life etc um so there are also three concentric wheels
00:32:18.420 carved into it so the bigger one called the wheel of life has 12 petals and shows episodes from
00:32:23.900 pedro and inez's life together the second one the wheel of fortune only has six petals and its
00:32:29.340 images are interpreted to symbolize purity of the purity of love between them and the immortality
00:32:34.960 in a resurrection they will eventually achieve. So the wheel of life shows the following moments
00:32:40.200 like this is what's carved into his tomb. So Inez cuddling their children, the couple with their
00:32:44.920 kids, Inez and Pedro playing chess, the couple spending time together, Inez watching someone on
00:32:50.500 the floor, Pedro seated on a big throne, Inez caught by her killers, Inez unveiling the face
00:32:55.780 of one of her killers, Inez's assassination, Inez lying dead, the punishment of one of Inez's
00:33:01.160 killers king pedro wrapped in a shroud and then the wheel of fortune shows the following moments
00:33:07.020 in a seated on pedro's left side which indicates they were not married in a seated on pedro's
00:33:13.520 right side which shows now they're married the couple side by side looking like they're posing
00:33:17.580 for an official portrait um king dad expelling in is from the kingdom in is repelling king dad
00:33:24.660 king pedro and queen in is lying on the floor so the foot of the tomb is all about death um
00:33:31.140 Well, there's also some carvings on there showing elements of the life of St. Bartholomew, who is known as the patron saint of stutterers.
00:33:39.800 And apparently, Pedro had a stutter.
00:33:43.120 Did not know.
00:33:46.080 And so the words in Portuguese, ate o fim do mundo, are carved onto the tomb, which means until the end of the world.
00:33:55.720 So a tribute to his love for her.
00:33:57.920 but we're still not done with this story so to understand the full effect of this love story and
00:34:04.280 the significance of Pedro and Inez we need to keep going so Pedro and Constanza's son Fernando reigned
00:34:11.320 for 16 years he and his wife Leonor Telles had one surviving child a daughter named Beatriz
00:34:18.460 of Portugal without a son it effectively meant that whoever married Beatriz would kind of be
00:34:24.800 the new king of portugal so like all the princes from all the kingdoms wanted to marry her
00:34:28.960 including um interestingly um princes from england and france eventually they chose to marry beatrice
00:34:36.760 to king juan the first of castile because that would ease tensions between portugal and castile
00:34:41.940 which had been pretty shitty for a while obviously because well i guess not obviously like it had
00:34:48.020 been shitty during pedro's era but then since then fernando had waged three wars against castile so
00:34:52.640 this marriage was intended to put an end to hostilities with a union of the two crowns but
00:34:57.640 um it was not a widely accepted solution because um because Portugal was represented in this
00:35:07.000 marriage by Beatriz um and Castile was represented by Juan a man it and because of the like way that 0.72
00:35:13.660 gender relations worked um and dynasties and things it kind of meant that like Castile would
00:35:20.580 become more important and portugal like portugal would be kind of like subsumed by castile lots of
00:35:26.380 nobles were fiercely opposed to that possibility but they could not decide who they preferred
00:35:31.280 to be the new king instead there were two potential alternate kings of portugal like
00:35:37.040 they wanted to just like get rid of fernando replace him with a new king um the two potential
00:35:41.300 replacement kings were both sons of our pedro one of them was joao castro who is pedro's son
00:35:50.020 with Inez the other was also named Joao so like we've moved from a Pedro era to a Joao era and
00:35:56.640 this was Joao of Avis and he was the son a son that Pedro had had uh two years after Inez's death
00:36:06.220 he had had a son with a Galician peasant woman named Teresa Gile Lorenzo so um in terms of Pedro
00:36:17.860 getting the lady jane memorial outstanding supporting performance award like he did so
00:36:23.740 much to just love and honor in his even long after she was dead and then i'm like oh but he
00:36:28.600 had a child with someone else but i'm like you know what that's fine like inez was dead he took
00:36:33.720 comfort in the arms of someone else that person had a son um i don't think that discounts pedro
00:36:40.680 although i do prefer in handing out this award that the people who get it never waver in their
00:36:48.780 love of the main heroine but we'll we'll talk about this after anyway so there's two potential
00:36:54.920 new kings of portugal both sons of pedro both called joao and this all kind of took off because
00:37:01.820 king fernando who is the brother of both joao's um half-brother died and then let's see so he
00:37:10.660 died and then his wife queen leonore assumed regency in the name of beatrice and juan because
00:37:18.080 they had not had a child yet and as per ever a whole succession crisis happened this is like
00:37:25.400 not dissimilar to what happened with didda and all of the who's going to be king situations and
00:37:31.780 that anyway big succession happened and over the next two years it was joao versus joao
00:37:36.580 versus juan um a big turning point one of many was when the bubonic plague struck the castilian
00:37:44.520 forces forcing juan of castile to retreat and so he kind of was out of the running so then it was
00:37:51.480 joao versus joao pedro's son versus pedro's son but then evidence came out maybe forged that
00:37:59.280 quote-unquote proved that the letter that said like pedro and inez were totally married don't
00:38:04.140 worry about it someone was like oh that letter was maybe a forgery um which made which meant that
00:38:10.820 joao castro inez's son was not legitimate like his kind of edge in this battle against the other joao
00:38:16.640 was that he was the legitimate son of pedro but if he's illegitimate then he and joao of avis are
00:38:23.960 more on the same level as each other so that was a blow to him joao of avis avis got some support
00:38:31.300 from england england agreed to help they won a big battle and eventually joao of evas was proclaimed
00:38:38.060 king of portugal so fun fact though so this english slash portuguese alliance
00:38:44.880 would be renewed with the treaty of windsor so this treaty like this is the treaty that they
00:38:52.200 signed and it's still valid today which established a pact of mutual support between
00:38:56.560 portugal and england in fact portugal would use it again in 1640 um they got england's help to
00:39:05.500 expel the spanish habsburg kings from the country again during the peninsular war um this england
00:39:12.480 portuguese alliance would also be used by britain like when england became part of britain in world
00:39:19.600 war ii um which allowed the allied forces to establish basis on the azores and then during
00:39:24.580 the 1982 Falklands War so like that is an old treaty that just kept being used I know you're
00:39:31.480 thinking what about Inez and here's the thing her legacy would go on in a very major way so the
00:39:40.940 thing is Inez and Pedro's son Joao did not become king of Portugal but their lineage did continue on
00:39:46.820 just not as king so their daughter also called Beatriz that's like the third Beatriz in the story
00:39:52.820 married sancho alfonso and their daughter leonore of albuquerque married fernando the first of
00:39:59.740 aragon and their son was juan the second of aragon who married juana enriquez i promise
00:40:05.060 this is going to get a point and their son was fernando ferdinand of aragon aka ferdinand from
00:40:12.620 ferdinand and isabella so inez and pedro's line leads to ferdinand from isabella and ferdinand
00:40:20.260 So that means that Ferdinand and Isabel's children, Juan of Castile, Catherine of Aragon, were descendants of Inez and Pedro, which means that Philip II and his descendants were also Inez's descendants, which means the next several centuries of monarchs in Western Europe were all descendants of Pedro and Inez because everyone kept marrying their cousins, etc.
00:40:43.620 but wait there's more so the national commotion and the aura that was created around these events
00:40:49.720 like the pedro and anez story like even at the time it was a big deal everyone was just like
00:40:55.720 loving this love story um it immediately became you know a story that people told each other
00:41:01.880 like this could not go unnoticed not just by people in portugal but all over the place
00:41:05.240 um the first known literary treatment like uh a chronicle written about this love story dates
00:41:12.980 from the 14th century so just like 100 years later it was written by a jewish writer david
00:41:17.860 ben yom tov even bilia and since then the story has inspired a diversity of approaches comparable
00:41:23.800 only to the story of romeo and juliet inez's memory has been celebrated everywhere in epic
00:41:28.940 and lyric poetry novels dramas paintings and music more than 120 operas were created about
00:41:34.180 this story in italy alone it's been made into a play musical ballet opera so in all different
00:41:42.500 countries but obviously in portugal the story achieved its greatest artistic and literary
00:41:47.900 recognition so medieval royal chroniclers wrote about it there's a long tradition of literary
00:41:53.460 works down the centuries um the story continues to inspire almost all of the most renowned
00:41:57.900 portuguese writers and if you're like this should be a movie oh it's been a movie so the first movie
00:42:04.420 was in 1910 there was a silent movie then there was also a movie in 1944 1997 a 2005 tv miniseries
00:42:11.820 and then most recently there was a 2018 movie um released internationally under the title
00:42:17.600 the dead queen um the portuguese title is dom pedro e inez and that movie is based on the novel
00:42:23.840 by rosa lobado da feria so there is a saying in portuguese i did check with alicia who
00:42:32.760 helped me with some portuguese cultural stuff in this story to ask like have you heard people say
00:42:38.800 this and she hadn't really and she asked her parents and they hadn't really but let's bring
00:42:42.840 the saying back I don't know so there's a saying in Portuguese um it is too late Inez is dead
00:42:50.300 is a saying anyway it's too late Inez is dead so anyway the story this is the thing so like
00:42:58.360 literally like the zombie queen the like crowning a skeleton probably didn't happen but the way that
00:43:04.220 her life so like her life after death has just been in literature and plays and culture and just
00:43:11.160 like this love story and also and a lot of that's because of how pedro commemorated her like these
00:43:15.840 beautiful tombs which you can still see i believe the place where they are is like a unesco world
00:43:20.260 heritage site like pedro made sure nobody forgot about her and and no one has so this is the story
00:43:31.560 of inez de castro we'll look at scoring for her actually first the lady jane semer memorial award
00:43:38.560 for outstanding supporting performance i am going to give this to pedro so because yes although he
00:43:47.660 did have a child with another woman he i think he also like hunted down a rip of the hearts of
00:43:54.620 inez's killers he also like had the most beautiful funeral procession in world history he also made
00:43:59.320 these gorgeous tombs he made sure she was never forgotten um just some of the potential scheminess
00:44:07.480 he did being like oh we were actually secretly married so our children are actually legitimate
00:44:11.460 don't worry about it like pedro i i appreciate how he loved her so clearly but we're scoring just
00:44:20.100 in is herself not the story not her and him and in terms of scandalousness i feel like there's not
00:44:27.120 that much really because i mean okay so she's a lady waiting she went to court she became his
00:44:34.080 mistress which is like oola but like that happened a lot frankly like this just got more interesting
00:44:39.880 because in a sort of anne boleyn like way like pedro loved her more than men were expected to
00:44:47.900 love the mistresses which i guess is scandalousness like his monogamy um but inez herself like she
00:44:54.240 shit up she was amazing he loved her um I'm comfortable giving this um I don't know like 0.98
00:45:04.540 they like they had a little domestic life like she was murdered but she did not murder anybody
00:45:07.980 she herself did not do scandalous just things really other than just like be with Pedro I'm 1.00
00:45:13.960 gonna give her a five for scandalousness um and is a scheminess now I don't know what she did 0.73
00:45:19.280 versus what her brothers did we have to kind of put them together because otherwise I don't know
00:45:22.940 anything about her so it was her and her brothers were encouraging him to like take over castile
00:45:27.880 etc which is pretty schemey but were they sending letters and aqueducts you know but that was pedro
00:45:35.600 like i feel like her scheminess like this is a great saga but i don't have high hopes for inez
00:45:39.860 herself you know getting a iconic score here which is fair um that like she achieved other things 1.00
00:45:47.620 other than getting a high scandalous score in the fredigan memorial scandalousness scale 1.00
00:45:52.420 and as a scheminess i'm gonna give her a six because her maybe she was involved in the stuff
00:46:00.100 her brothers are doing um significance this is where i just like i couldn't figure this out
00:46:06.580 myself so i asked alicia who knows about portugal um is from portugal um and she said probably like
00:46:14.420 a seven or an eight based on it is a sort of cultural importance so i'm gonna trust her on
00:46:20.340 that and just give her a stir of eight for significance because of everything i just said
00:46:24.020 about her importance is like a muse um to literature and stuff and then also because of 0.94
00:46:30.120 her who her descendants became like ferdinand isabella you know that was because of her
00:46:35.300 sexism bonus um so it's kind of like it's a classist thing like the fact that she wasn't
00:46:43.660 allowed to marry pedro more so than a sexism thing but then this where they were like how can
00:46:50.680 we stop these brothers from scheming against pedro i know it's by killing her it's like why
00:46:56.600 would that stop the brothers like so they really blamed her for what pedro is doing which is 0.85
00:47:02.160 inherently a sexist shitty thing to do she was in fact murdered so i think in terms of sexism bonus
00:47:08.720 i'm gonna give her a seven i think um and so what does this all add up to that's a 26 so where does
00:47:19.000 that put her there's a number of very respectable people with a 26 including francis howard ethelflaude
00:47:28.380 lady of the mercians and askew lady anne stanley margaret of anjou so certainly a respectable score
00:47:36.400 here for inez de castro what a saga honestly so yeah all that's left is just to remind you
00:47:45.060 of a couple things so um if you go to vulgarhistory.com there's links to all the stuff
00:47:51.040 there um you can listen to past episodes and instagram or at vulgar history pod and if you
00:47:59.580 go to vulgarhistory.store vulgarhistory.store you can look for our merch um and you can always use
00:48:07.260 code tits out for free us shipping or tits out 10 for 10 off and if you want to get more of my
00:48:14.920 storytelling uh you can support me on patreon so go to patreon.com and foster writer and that's 0.96
00:48:22.380 where i post for patreons um every month so this asshole the episode's about horrible men of history
00:48:28.520 um also that's where you can find the vulgar peace theater um discussions with me lana with
