00:00:00.000 Hello and welcome to Vulgar History, a feminist women's history comedy podcast. My name is 0.73
00:00:16.620 Anne Foster. I'm a historian and an author, and I've been curious about the Tudors since
00:00:22.120 I was a little kid. This season on the podcast, we will be talking about the Tudors, the notorious
00:00:28.080 dynasty of English monarchs. We're going to be talking about who they were, what the times were
00:00:33.640 like that they lived in, and what was happening elsewhere in the world at the same time. Some of
00:00:39.060 you know about them, and some of you don't know much about them, and some of you know like a
00:00:42.920 middle amount about them. So I hope that this podcast series is going to have something for
00:00:50.000 everyone, no matter what your knowledge base is of the tutors themselves and the times in which
00:00:54.220 they lived. And so to kick it all off this week, we're going to talk about where the Tudors came
00:00:59.700 from, why this dynasty exists, how they ended up being in charge of England and like everything
00:01:06.080 else to do with them. It's kind of convoluted. It's complicated. And at the heart of it are
00:01:12.380 some very strong women. So it all begins. You might think this is going to begin in England,
00:01:20.600 But in fact, part of what's complicated about this whole dynasty is that it doesn't.
00:01:25.400 So we're starting with Catherine de Valois.
00:01:29.080 So Catherine de Valois was the youngest daughter of Charles VI of France and his wife, Isabeau
00:01:35.940 of Bavaria.
00:01:37.120 So she was born in Paris.
00:01:39.600 So she's the youngest of these siblings.
00:01:41.280 And her father, Charles VI of France, was known as Charles the Mad. 0.58
00:01:45.820 So he had some mental illness going on.
00:01:50.600 So which involved, maybe I'll do an episode about him later on, but part of this mental illness was he thought he was made of glass, is the particular manifestation of his mental illness.
00:02:02.500 So this led to her mother kind of helping out a lot with the father, obviously, thinking he was made of glass, going through all this stuff.
00:02:11.360 He couldn't really be there as a king, so her mother sort of took over, and Catherine of Valois saw that, sort of a role model of just like what a wife can do.
00:02:20.600 But also I want to mention, like Catherine of Valois, we're talking about her because she is an ancestor of the Tudor dynasty.
00:02:27.040 And there is some mental illness that manifests throughout the Tudor dynasty.
00:02:30.620 So perhaps this is where that gene comes from.
00:02:34.940 Anyway, Catherine was only three years old when her father's illness made it so he had to whisk her off on public life.
00:02:42.220 He just couldn't be around.
00:02:44.900 He had to kind of be protected and kept away.
00:02:47.900 so her mother Isabeau tried to wrest control of the government this didn't go well people 0.92
00:02:54.620 in France at this time were not into the idea of a woman being in charge and so there's always
00:02:59.800 we're going to see this again when we get over to England there's always ambitious people ambitious 0.83
00:03:04.380 family members when they see that there's kind of a power vacuum and maybe they could have more
00:03:08.020 power so anyway this all led to a civil war in 1407 in this part of France and which weakened
00:03:16.780 France to the point that England was able to come in and conquest and take over. So as part of this
00:03:24.500 conquest of England, Catherine's older sister, Isabella, was married to King Richard II.
00:03:31.200 And she was briefly Queen of England, her sister, Isabella. But then it's just, there's so much
00:03:37.580 like seizing of thrones going on here. Like when people talk about who the monarch is of a country,
00:03:43.600 it's like oh it's divinely ordained it's like was it or was it just like a power struggle and like
00:03:48.220 somebody won in an arm wrestling match basically so eventually henry the fourth who you might know
00:03:54.020 from the shakespeare plays um sees the english throne at which point isabella catherine's sister
00:04:00.040 came back to france and it's just like a lot of england france stuff going on and they're like
00:04:05.580 and we'll see there's a lot in this story and throughout the tudor dynasty it's kind of like
00:04:09.280 two places are at war and it's like how will we how will we solve this war i don't know what if
00:04:13.500 we marry the daughter of one team to the son of the other team and this is why our plans are hatched
00:04:21.420 to marry so king henry the fourth has a son called king henry the fifth who is very famous from the
00:04:27.100 shakespeare play and so the plan is like let's marry henry the fifth son to wait no henry the
00:04:34.760 IV's son to Catherine. Basically, it's like, let's marry Catherine to the prince in England.
00:04:40.680 Too many Henrys, honestly. So Henry IV is the king. They want to marry Catherine to his son,
00:04:46.700 Henry V. And then another thing that happens a lot in the story is that people just suddenly die
00:04:53.020 in the middle of various negotiations. And this happens again. So Henry IV dies
00:04:57.320 before the marriage negotiations had been completed. His son, Henry V, becomes king
00:05:03.800 of England. He's 26. Catherine is 11. And I mean, they're going to get married, but she's not 11
00:05:12.880 when they get married. Things basically happen. So Henry V is like, okay, if you want me to
00:05:18.500 marry your daughter, here's what I also want. So Charles VI, who's technically still the king
00:05:23.720 of France, and I'm not sure you tell me, there's a Netflix film version of the Shakespeare play,
00:05:29.460 henry v with timothy chalamet and lily rosedep plays catherine de valois and i believe robert
00:05:37.740 pattinson with a preposterous and really enjoyable french accent might be playing charles i'm not
00:05:42.160 sure anyway so charles who thinks he's made of glass is still technically the king of france
00:05:48.660 and so henry v sends him this list of demands and he's like i want you like they're at this point
00:05:53.980 like France and England are kind of like constantly fighting over those like bits of what we now
00:06:00.560 consider France that are like on the coastline like towards England so Henry wants Aquitaine
00:06:05.000 and Normandy returned he also wants Catherine's hand in marriage and he also wants an enormous
00:06:09.560 dowry because England's been at war for so long they need some money anyway so he goes to France
00:06:15.280 this is like there's so many battles in this episode y'all I can't this is not a battle
00:06:20.840 discussion podcast so I will say the names of them and if you or somebody you know is a fan
00:06:25.580 you can be like hell yeah I know that but I'm not going to get into it. A thing happens the Battle
00:06:31.080 of Agincourt Henry V wins. So it's like five years worth of battles but eventually
00:06:38.400 Henry V defeats the French, conquers Normandy, names himself the heir to the French throne
00:06:46.260 and he finally marries Catherine de Valois
00:06:51.060 because the battles have been going on for so long.
00:06:53.400 At this point, he's now 33.
00:06:55.060 She is 18.
00:06:56.000 They get married in the French village of Troy.
00:06:58.540 And then Catherine leaves France to go to England.
00:07:01.380 And then there's a coronation ceremony for her
00:07:03.640 at Westminster Abbey in 1421.
00:07:08.220 But when I tell you that people keep dying
00:07:11.180 at the most inconvenient times,
00:07:12.520 it happens perpetually.
00:07:14.400 so she goes to England she is queen of England but then what happens is Henry's younger brother 0.97
00:07:21.240 Thomas was killed in battle in France and Henry V is like god damn it I'm gonna avenge you my 0.62
00:07:25.660 brother Thomas so he goes back to France in 1421 leaving Catherine she's pregnant and she gives 0.77
00:07:32.220 birth to a baby boy named Henry because god forbid anyone in this lineage be called anything other
00:07:37.940 than Henry so she has a son Henry and then she's like you know what my husband's in France on the
00:07:44.380 vengeance mission i'm gonna go to france to be with to be with him and so she leaves the son
00:07:48.780 in the care of his uncle humphrey the duke of gloucester who is like i did an episode years
00:07:55.860 and years and years ago it was a patreon special episode but humphrey duke of gloucester marries
00:08:00.420 this woman eleanor cobham who ends up being tried as a witch and it's an interesting story and i
00:08:06.080 believe philip and gregory has a new book coming out called the royal witch that's about all of
00:08:09.680 that so maybe we'll wrap it around and include that back here on the main feed anyway what happens
00:08:15.100 is henry the fifth contacts dysentery which if you don't know that's a disease that you get from
00:08:19.960 when you're sleeping too close or you're living too close to where people are peeing and pooing
00:08:24.220 and then you all get sick it happens a lot in wartime situations so he gets dysentery he dies
00:08:31.500 um catherine is now a widow and her son is less than nine months old and he becomes the new king
00:08:39.060 So he's baby King Henry VI of England. 0.86
00:08:41.780 So she's like the mother of the king.
00:08:43.280 She's like at this point in her early twenties, if even that.
00:08:47.660 And then her father, who thinks he's made of glass back in France, dies, which according
00:08:52.800 to the various treaties that happens means Henry VI is now also the king of France.
00:08:57.980 So this little baby has all these little baby crowns on his head.
00:09:02.340 I don't know, literally, I don't know if, you know, you tell me, were there baby crowns
00:09:06.100 for baby kings?
00:09:06.820 I'm not sure.
00:09:07.360 but now we've got a baby king scenario which is kind of like the worst
00:09:11.900 thing because of the power vacuum and all the people scheming and stuff
00:09:15.680 but where this leaves Catherine is that Humphrey who's like the babysitter of the baby king
00:09:23.820 he's like okay well if Catherine remarries then whoever her husband is might get too much
00:09:29.700 control and power because he'd be the stepfather of the king and so it was just he felt Humphrey
00:09:35.000 because Humphrey wanted to be in charge, frankly, but guess what? There never was King Humphrey of
00:09:39.580 England. So anyway, so he is kind of like in charge though. And he passed a law that says
00:09:46.700 that Catherine is not allowed to marry without the consent of the King and his council, AKA him.
00:09:51.960 So Catherine is just like young, hot, early twenties, um, and forbidden from marrying,
00:09:57.840 which, you know, would be the really great beginning of a really sexy romance novel. 0.93
00:10:02.120 and guess what? It is. So she's just like, she's living, you know, on her own. She's being like
00:10:09.920 the mother of the king, but like in this era, she's not like politically allowed to be involved 0.93
00:10:14.520 in that. So she's just like this French person living in England, just being like, what am I
00:10:17.580 going to do? And then she meets a young Welshman of quote, obscure birth named Owen Tudor, who
00:10:26.080 becomes her head of household rumors begin to circulate that he was her lover and in fact they
00:10:33.780 do have children together so her and owen tudor i want to pause there's not a lot known about owen
00:10:39.000 tudor but i am obsessed with the fact that the tudor dynasty this like ultra english you know
00:10:46.640 dynasty comes from a french woman and her welsh lover like that's that's where it begins from
00:10:54.180 like the name Tudor comes from Wales. So Owen Tudor, not a lot known about him. But I will say
00:11:02.120 that as we will see throughout this series, there are two flavors of Tudor men. You've got your
00:11:08.540 Edward IV. You've got your Henry VIII. These are like tall, athletic, like handsome, charismatic,
00:11:16.780 like capable people who like can lead armies and are like, you know, like the quarterback of the
00:11:24.120 football team like these these hot guys and then you've got you're like prince arthur you've got
00:11:29.540 your edward king henry the eighth son like you've got these little sickly guys like don't live to
00:11:36.640 adulthood um and are sort of more fragile you've got two flavors of tudor man no one's in the
00:11:43.240 middle you're these guys are the one or the other and so i have to presume that owen tudor was hot
00:11:51.000 because that's just makes the story more fun for me.
00:11:56.680 Anyway, so she, Catherine de Velwa,
00:11:58.460 she's forbidden from marrying anybody.
00:11:59.960 So she meets Owen Tudor.
00:12:01.500 And apparently, well, clearly, factually,
00:12:06.340 they have three children together.
00:12:08.060 So they have three sons, Edmund, Jasper,
00:12:11.260 and Owen Tudor Jr.
00:12:12.460 They also have two daughters, Jacinda and Margaret.
00:12:17.300 So, but the thing is, 0.99
00:12:18.500 there's this law that says she can't get married.
00:12:21.000 So, but it's like unlikely that a French princess and the Dowager queen of England would just like 0.97
00:12:27.700 have illegitimate children. So it's widely assumed that she and Owen had what we call
00:12:33.600 in this podcast, a secret sexy marriage. There's no documentation of this ceremony because it's
00:12:39.540 secret and it's sexy and it's olden times. And this is a time where you could just like say
00:12:43.460 to somebody like, I marry you. And they're like, for sure, bet. And it's true. Like there maybe
00:12:49.460 and paperwork so she's just like living this beautiful life with her hot welsh lover slash 0.93
00:12:56.080 secret husband but eventually the rumors um and of her like secret family which is like pretty
00:13:02.460 hard to hide the fact you have like five children um so this reaches like the court or humphrey
00:13:07.740 is still in charge and he has owen imprisoned for you know secretly marrying the queen maybe 0.98
00:13:12.600 catherine herself she is just like well fuck this she goes to a place called bermunzy abbey 0.99
00:13:18.600 and she has some sort of illness we don't know what because people didn't give a fuck about 0.99
00:13:23.020 women in the past but also everyone's dying all the time so you don't really write stuff down
00:13:26.500 you know anyway she dies she's buried at Westminster Abbey and so a couple things I
00:13:34.180 want to say about her corpse because if you're new to this podcast welcome um there is a long 0.55
00:13:39.880 history of stories on this podcast involving fucked up things happening to dead bodies and
00:13:44.020 this is one of those things so she has what's called a funeral effigy so this is in this era 0.70
00:13:51.140 and for like the next couple hundred years when a notable person died they would make sort of like
00:13:56.840 a wooden mannequin that looked like them and then put that person's clothes on so you have like a
00:14:02.160 parade or you like lay it in the state and people can like so you're not seeing the person's body
00:14:07.720 but you're seeing sort of like a statue that looks like the body so her wooden funeral effigy
00:14:11.480 is currently it's still around it's on display in the queen's diamond jubilee gallery at
00:14:16.660 westminster abbey which is like if you go to westminster abbey it's like upstairs and kind
00:14:21.020 of the attic there's a there's this gallery and one of the things that's there is catherine de
00:14:25.260 valois wooden funeral effigy so her tomb is like she's there's a scandal about like did she 0.94
00:14:33.480 marry owen tudor did she just fuck owen tudor but like good for her and like again if there's 0.99
00:14:38.460 a romance and all about this. Tell me the title. This is a great saga, but she's still the mother 0.99
00:14:43.520 of King Henry VI. So she's like an important figure. Anyway, so she had a tomb. It was this
00:14:50.200 beautiful alabaster memorial and it was apparently deliberately destroyed when the Abbey was getting
00:14:56.060 some renovations done during the reign of her grandson, Henry VII. And it seems like he might
00:15:02.760 have deliberately destroyed this because he wanted to sort of like distance himself from
00:15:07.260 his illegitimate ancestry and just be kind of like uh let's just forget that the Tudor dynasty
00:15:12.600 started from like this French woman having this affair with this Welsh guy like don't think about
00:15:18.320 that too much so at the time that these like renovations happened her coffin lid was quote
00:15:25.200 accidentally lifted which revealed her corpse and then for generations like literally hundreds of 0.93
00:15:31.920 years her actual corpse not her wooden effigy but her actual like skeleton um became a tourist
00:15:38.020 attraction in 1669 which is like more than 200 years later the diarist slash pervert samuel peeps
00:15:45.860 um went to visit and he kissed her corpse on his birthday um which feels to me like a cursed thing
00:15:53.640 to do that would maybe kill you but it didn't anyway her remains were not properly reinterred
00:15:59.400 until the reign of Queen Victoria.
00:16:00.960 So this is like the 18th.
00:16:02.300 So this is like 400 years of her body
00:16:03.980 just being like there.
00:16:05.240 And if it's like, hey, look who it is. 1.00
00:16:06.400 It's the body of this like famous whore, 1.00
00:16:09.160 which is how some people saw her 0.99
00:16:11.000 if they believed that she and Owen Tudor
00:16:13.200 weren't actually married. 1.00
00:16:14.460 Anyway, it's fucked up. 0.99
00:16:15.680 But like, guess what? 0.99
00:16:16.540 This is English history. 0.81
00:16:18.460 So once she died,
00:16:21.740 Owen Tudor kind of didn't have this protection.
00:16:25.700 So he was arrested for violating the law
00:16:28.080 of the remarriage of the queen dowager. So their sons, so they had three sons, Edmund, Jasper,
00:16:35.040 and Owen Jr. Owen Jr. seems to have died in childhood because you only ever hear about Edmund
00:16:40.340 and Jasper. So Edmund and Jasper Tudor were raised by relatives, but bear in mind, like their half
00:16:46.420 brother is King Henry VI, who became king at nine months old, like they're half siblings.
00:16:51.120 and so he the king boy took a role in like their upbringing so like they all knew each other and
00:16:58.400 eventually owen tudor was eventually pardoned and released and he became a member of the household
00:17:03.900 of his stepson king henry the sixth edmund and jasper tudor were given earldoms like they became
00:17:10.320 earls by king henry the sixth their half brother so the tudor boys edmund and jasper like things
00:17:18.200 are maybe kind of looking up for them. But to explain what happens next, we need to get into
00:17:23.000 the Wars of the Roses, which is like, again, this is not a talking about battles podcast,
00:17:30.120 but we need to get into this. So it's a civil war. It's an English civil war about who's going
00:17:37.300 to be king next. So Henry VI, Catherine de Valois' son with Henry V, had been king since he was
00:17:46.120 almost nine months old and when you have a baby king there had been instability there had been
00:17:51.580 like advisors and regents who were just like battling against each other for power because
00:17:56.220 the king himself was a little baby and then a little boy and he was really raised
00:17:59.640 he was raised in a way to not really um be a strong king because it was to the advantage of
00:18:07.760 all the adult men around him that he would be kind of weak and indecisive and that they could
00:18:12.080 do everything for him so that was kind of how he was groomed that's how he was raised in addition
00:18:17.560 to that his personality was just like not not the sort of decisive ruler who you might need
00:18:25.800 during times of civil war so there just had been instability and when he came of age like when he
00:18:32.800 became an adult man it was clear that like this guy did not have the personality or the skills
00:18:38.360 of a temperament to be the king during this really dangerous time, which was kind of like
00:18:42.860 when England took over France during that civil war. It's just like lots of ambitious people saw
00:18:47.620 that Henry VI, the son of Catherine de Belois was just like, oh, this, like we could maybe take over
00:18:52.320 from this guy. A lot of people were kind of thinking that. And the major issue during his reign
00:18:57.420 was France, which, so there had been a thing like when Catherine married Henry V, like that was like,
00:19:06.020 okay this is like peace between France and England everything's cool but then remember
00:19:09.940 Henry V went over and there was more wars and more battles and so even though Henry VI was 0.98
00:19:14.780 technically the heir or the king of France like it was just kind of like France was like fuck that 0.66
00:19:20.720 no so there's just like England is at war with France again slash constantly and at this point 0.94
00:19:26.820 England had three options they could take a more aggressive approach like go and just like attack
00:19:31.500 France, or they couldn't negotiate some sort of deal, or they could just like peace out and
00:19:36.500 abandon mainland Europe altogether. And so Henry, with his advisor's advice, he decided to,
00:19:45.300 let's try to have peace. And like, how do you have peace by marrying somebody from that country?
00:19:50.520 So Henry VI marries Margaret of Anjou, who is a French princess. And a few, several years ago,
00:20:00.260 this podcast has been on for a very long time i did do an episode about margaret of anjou a while
00:20:05.580 ago and i recommend you listen to that if you want to hear more about her story in her historical
00:20:11.940 story anyway people by people i mean like his advisors etc they didn't like this decision
00:20:20.240 they thought that he was giving in to france they wanted to take this more aggressive stance
00:20:24.280 so he thought that henry the six and his advisor hoped they led by marrying margaret of anjou this
00:20:29.620 would be like, no, there's peace between France and England. There was not. The war recommenced.
00:20:34.860 Eventually, all English territory in France was lost other than the small town of Calais.
00:20:41.620 And meanwhile, Henry VI, he was just not a strong ruler. He was not a strong leader. He was cool
00:20:50.200 at lots of other stuff, I'm sure, but not at being the king. And so the nobles were lobbying for
00:20:56.620 power, things are just getting more and more sort of precarious there. So his wife, like, thank
00:21:01.100 goodness, like somebody in here, like, is like a strong, capable leader. Margaret of Anjou was
00:21:05.580 strong-willed. She was smart. She knew what was up. And so she took on more power and influence,
00:21:10.700 kind of like Catherine de Valle's mother did when her father was in his, like, I'm made of glass
00:21:14.860 phase. So Margaret of Anjou was kind of taking over and trying to help out, but people were
00:21:20.200 distrustful for her because she was French and they were at war with the French. And starting
00:21:25.940 in 1453 Henry VI has a series of mental breakdowns I would call it it was a situation where he just
00:21:32.780 like became unresponsive he would just like lie in bed and just like not engage with people like
00:21:39.120 he was awake he was not in a coma but he was just like peaced out like he was not so before like
00:21:45.800 it was sort of like his personality made him sort of like not super capable of being a king but now
00:21:50.200 he just like physically was like not capable of anything. Tensions mounted between Margaret of
00:21:56.300 Anjou, who's this like strong-willed woman who's just like, well, fuck this, I'll take over. And 1.00
00:22:01.220 everyone's like, A, you're a woman, B, you're French, like C, we hate you, like we're not going 1.00
00:22:05.400 to. And her main hater was Richard, the Duke of York. And so they were just like, who's going to 0.92
00:22:11.920 be in charge of the government, et cetera. And so part of the issue is just like, who's going to be
00:22:17.460 the heir to the throne? Because at this point, Margaret of Anjou and Henry VI did not have any
00:22:21.920 children. So it's like, who's going to be the heir to the throne? Is it going to be maybe the
00:22:25.600 half-brothers, these Tudor guys? Maybe that's going to happen. That's part of why they were 0.61
00:22:30.480 named Earls. Retro Duke of York is just kind of like, but what if I'm the next king? So he's
00:22:36.200 named Lord Protector, which is sort of like he's acting as the king when the king's not able to be
00:22:41.500 the king 14 months later henry the sixth recovers he's like back on he's back he's he's talking he's
00:22:50.320 walking he's like you know back in society but during those 14 months that he was sort of like
00:22:56.440 not able to do anything the two sides really coalesced of like people who supported him
00:23:03.040 and people who supported richard duke of york and so the people who supported richard duke of york
00:23:07.400 That's the Yorkists.
00:23:09.440 And the people who supported him are the Lancaster side.
00:23:13.380 And those two names are similar.
00:23:14.900 If you watched Game of Thrones, there's the Starks and there's the Lannisters.
00:23:18.980 And that is exactly what this is.

00:26:15.680 learned getting there, it's yours for the taking.
00:26:19.660 Reppin, find us wherever you listen.
00:26:22.300 Go get it now.
00:26:26.300 And we're back.
00:26:28.040 So these are enemies.
00:26:29.900 These are two teams of people.
00:26:33.280 And if you're like, why would Richard Duke of York think he could be king?
00:26:35.720 He's just like the Duke of York.
00:26:36.800 He's not only the king.
00:26:37.580 But the thing is, like, there's past kings who had numerous sons.
00:26:42.840 And so the way that the succession worked in England was it always went to kind of the oldest son, unless one of the other sons, like, gets an army and starts a war and then he takes over.
00:26:53.220 So Richard Duke of York was descended from the same, like, king from a while ago.
00:26:59.000 so it's he feels like I should be king anyway so we've got the Lancasters like their king option
00:27:06.500 is Henry VI who was the king and then the York side Richard Duke of York is like who they think
00:27:12.860 should be the king so ultimately wars break out this is the wars of the roses so and it's called
00:27:21.060 the wars of the roses because one side has a white rose and one side has a red rose they didn't call
00:27:26.740 of this at the time, but later on it became known as this, partially because Shakespeare calls it
00:27:30.360 this. So there's the Battle of St. Albans, famous battle. During this battle, Henry VI, the king,
00:27:38.140 was captured by Richard, Duke of York. And then Richard, Duke of York, named himself Protector
00:27:42.740 of England. But he kept Henry alive because at this point, if Henry VI died, so Henry had a son.
00:27:51.860 He and Margaret of Andrew eventually did have a son. I believe the son is called Edward because
00:27:55.540 everybody is anyway henry has a two-year-old son and they're like okay if we kill henry then
00:28:00.880 like this two-year-old son is going to be king and like no one wants a baby king
00:28:04.360 that's not what you want during a time of crisis so but then henry there's a lot of back and forth
00:28:12.880 here like again i'm not here to be like a military history podcast what is going on is just who's
00:28:20.160 going to be the king. Henry is just like, I'm going to be the king. There's a great council
00:28:25.760 was announced, but the Yorks weren't invited, which is like sort of like Maleficent vibes.
00:28:31.800 So then Richard, Duke of York leads forces to attack. He lost, he fled, he's declared a traitor,
00:28:38.380 but then he returned stronger than ever with forces wanting to be named the king. But instead
00:28:43.740 what happens is he's named Henry's heir. He's named Lord Protector again. Henry is captive
00:28:49.540 again meanwhile henry's just kind of like he's like truly like a gender reverse like damsel in
00:28:55.860 distress he just is just keeps being kidnapped and held hostage by people the person who's in 0.99
00:29:00.240 charge is goddamn margaret of anjou so she's just like fuck this team lancaster forever like i'm on 0.99
00:29:06.280 i'm gonna ride or die for team lancaster so there's the battle of wakefield during this battle 1.00
00:29:11.760 richard duke of york is killed his forces are decimated like fuck yeah margaret of anjou 0.60
00:29:15.920 and as a result of this so Richard Duke of York is dead but then his son Edward who in past seasons 0.62
00:29:25.180 of this podcast I've talked about Edward and the way that he's portrayed in the White Queen
00:29:30.780 the Stars series based on Philip McGregory's books and also in the Hollow Crown which is a TV
00:29:38.140 adaptation of the Shakespeare plays he's always played by very hot actors so I always think of
00:29:43.040 Edward is hot Edward and that's what I'm going to call him so hot Edward takes over leading the
00:29:48.620 house of York and you know what he's got he's got the looks the charisma he's tall he's like
00:29:54.300 like he is someone's gonna get it done he's gonna get it done so he's he's you know he's like the 0.99
00:30:00.620 he's the mam dummy of the situation it's just like oh fuck this guy knows what he's doing 0.98
00:30:05.020 so he had an ally Richard the Earl of Warwick Richard Earl of Warwick is aka the kingmaker 0.99
00:30:11.840 which is like
00:30:13.640 do you remember
00:30:14.120 in High School Musical
00:30:14.820 did they not call Troy
00:30:16.520 the kingmaker
00:30:17.420 or something like that
00:30:18.260 that's what I first heard
00:30:19.540 at High School Musical
00:30:20.160 but it means the same thing here
00:30:21.280 it just means
00:30:22.000 Richard Earl Warwick
00:30:23.140 is so influential
00:30:24.380 and such a good
00:30:25.160 like politician
00:30:26.040 that he could determine
00:30:27.240 the next king
00:30:28.000 because he is just
00:30:29.560 so influential
00:30:30.060 anyway
00:30:31.440 Hot Edward
00:30:32.000 he is good at war
00:30:34.520 he's good at battles
00:30:35.560 he wins the battle
00:30:36.480 of Mortimer's Cross
00:30:37.720 but then Warwick
00:30:38.940 is defeated
00:30:39.500 at the second battle
00:30:40.360 of St. Albans
00:30:41.840 during which time so henry the sixth still alive remember they're keeping him alive he's just like
00:30:46.600 flopping around from like prison to prison but at the second pound of st albans the lancastrians
00:30:53.020 regain custody of henry the sixth do you know the thing in um in like screenwriting and like movies
00:31:00.540 people talk about a mcguffin it's like if you're doing if you're writing a movie and there's like
00:31:04.680 one thing everybody wants it's like this briefcase or it's like this you know bomb or it's this
00:31:09.960 formula when you watch like james bond movies or anything it's like everyone's always after this
00:31:14.240 thing it's like the word that they use is just the mcguffin like what's the kind of thing the plot
00:31:17.920 arises around and the world of the roses like henry vi himself is the mcguffin he's just like
00:31:23.380 being kidnapped and held hostage and saved again but he's already like not thriving mentally so
00:31:29.940 just like imagine the state he's in right now although i will say if you watch the hollow crown
00:31:35.420 Again, the TV movie version of Shakespeare plays, the guy who plays Henry VI is also really hot.
00:31:43.600 So it's like, I don't know how you choose.
00:31:47.100 If it's a hotness contest.
00:31:48.800 So the two sides meet in London, the Yorks, the Lancasters.
00:31:54.520 Edward York, Howard is crowned king.
00:31:57.840 And then they all head off to fight the Battle of Cowton in the middle of a snowstorm in March.
00:32:04.640 This is the bloodiest battle ever to take place in English soil.
00:32:07.500 People talk about the blood on the snow.
00:32:09.860 This battle ends with finally a decisive victory for team Hot Edward and the Yorks.
00:32:16.400 It's so decisive. 0.92
00:32:17.120 Margaret of Anjou flees to Scotland.
00:32:20.480 Edward goes back to London and he is crowned Edward IV.
00:32:24.120 He becomes the king for real this time.
00:32:27.440 Henry VI remains at large.
00:32:29.500 and he's not like running around
00:32:31.380 hiding in trees
00:32:32.200 like the later King Charles II does.
00:32:35.360 He's just kind of like,
00:32:36.520 again, I don't know,
00:32:38.360 picture people just piggybacking him around.
00:32:40.220 He's just like,
00:32:40.860 he would have had a nice life
00:32:43.160 being like a monk
00:32:44.720 and just like reading books all day.
00:32:46.120 But tragically, that was not his life.
00:32:47.660 Eventually he's caught and imprisoned
00:32:48.980 in the Tower of London.
00:32:50.820 Again, they don't kill him
00:32:52.160 because his son is still alive 0.99
00:32:53.680 and they don't want a baby king.
00:32:56.180 And they want the Lancastrian 0.71
00:32:58.120 like team captain to be this like frail mentally ill captive instead of like a young free young 0.57
00:33:04.300 man i guess his son is not a baby anymore he's like a teenager now meanwhile hot edward remember
00:33:10.980 his bff warwick the kingmaker fell into trouble so because the kingmaker warwick had been arranging
00:33:18.880 a match for edward to like a foreign princess probably someone french based on history but
00:33:25.020 he's like guess what I found you this like princess you can marry it'll be great for our
00:33:28.880 alliances it'll strengthen your like claim to the throne and Edward's like sorry I can't do that I'm
00:33:33.840 already super secret sexually married to hot English widow Elizabeth Woodville allegedly a
00:33:41.120 witch not really but if you scroll back in your podcast I did an episode about Elizabeth Woodville 0.98
00:33:46.240 a few years ago it's like a Halloween special Elizabeth Woodville allegedly descended from
00:33:50.360 Luxembourg mermaid witches anyway but what's important here is that Edward super secret
00:33:56.620 sexually married this is a thing this is a thing that Tudors do and you're gonna see people do
00:34:01.300 that throughout this series they love their secret marriages so it's a bit love island vibes it's like
00:34:08.920 when everyone's really hot you just can't stop them from hooking up anyway so Edward's like oh
00:34:14.160 I can't do a political marriage because I like married for like lust reasons this hot widow
00:34:18.860 Elizabeth Woodville. Warwick is so mad. Big mad about this because he's like, what? Marriages 1.00
00:34:24.200 aren't about love and lust. Marriages should be about alliances. And he's so mad. He completely 1.00
00:34:29.800 switches teams. He switches from Team York to Team Lancaster. He finds Margaret of Anjou
00:34:34.340 and the Lancastrians and they team up. No one saw this coming. And together they get Henry VI
00:34:41.160 back on the throne. He's still alive. Just prop him up like Weekend at Bernie's. Anyway,
00:34:47.900 this period is known as the redemption but then more battles ensue edward is good at battles
00:34:53.880 he wins the throne back at the battle of tewksbury during which at the battle of tewksbury many many
00:35:01.060 deaths including the teenage son of henry vi so now there's he's not an option margaret of anju's
00:35:06.840 son warwick the kingmaker also killed margaret of anju taken captive put in prison and then henry
00:35:13.960 the sixth is put in prison where he mysteriously dies question mark murdered question mark so
00:35:21.220 this is really clearing off the like chessboard of people there's a lot less options of like who
00:35:26.580 will be team Lancaster is just decimated right Warwick was on the team he's dead Margaret of
00:35:32.360 Anjou is in prison Henry VI is dead his son is dead it's like who's going to be the champion
00:35:37.040 like team Lancaster it's like who's left who's left and so um for 12 years hot Edward um he and
00:35:45.420 Elizabeth they have various children um including their oldest daughter Elizabeth of York and then
00:35:50.420 he dies suddenly and again the worst timing possible um because his heir is his oldest son
00:35:57.100 13 year old also Edward so you know there's kind of basically peace for 12 years because
00:36:04.060 hot edward is like capable and like good at being king his oldest son 13 year old edward is like
00:36:10.840 gonna be the next king but you know who's waiting the wings is goddamn richard ii from shakespeare's
00:36:16.320 place and also from history and also there's a lot of people in modern times who don't think 0.77
00:36:21.940 he was an evil murderer and like shout out to those people you're probably not listening to
00:36:26.000 his podcast. So what happens is hot Edward dies. The heir is his 13 year old son, but Edward's 0.99
00:36:35.360 brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester is like, you know, who should be King? Me. And he's been sort
00:36:41.220 of like in charge. He's like the, I don't know if he's like the Lord Protector or the Regent or
00:36:46.980 whatever, but he's kind of in charge because the, you know, the new King is 13 and has not like had
00:36:52.920 of coordination he is uncrowned and so Richard is like hey Edward like and you your younger brother
00:36:58.020 also called Richard like why don't you just come hang out in the Tower of London and you can be
00:37:02.300 like the princess in the tower do do do that's not ominous so the princess in the tower these two
00:37:08.860 boys they were seen a few times the tower grounds over the summer like playing baseball with each
00:37:13.940 other or whatever and then suddenly they just stopped being seen it was thought at the time
00:37:19.720 that Richard had had them whether he killed them himself or he had someone kill them
00:37:24.680 but seemingly they were dead and then later when William Shakespeare wrote plays about all this
00:37:31.280 notably the play Richard III this became sort of the popular understanding of what had happened
00:37:37.620 and again Richard III has various fans today who were like he didn't do it but like that's not what
00:37:45.500 this podcast is about. What we're going to say happened next is Richard did become king
00:37:50.600 because these two little boys were out of the picture for some reason. This made people angry
00:37:55.980 at the time because they were like, this guy kind of clearly killed these two boys and took over and 0.99
00:38:00.940 we don't want another goddamn civil war. Can people stop usurping the throne? Knock it off. 0.99
00:38:06.360 We just want everything to be calm and like the country's in debt. We've been at war forever.
00:38:10.460 like can we just like grow our crops and whatever anyway richard the third richard yeah richard
00:38:16.400 makes everybody him becoming king is every so mad that the old teams get back together
00:38:21.820 so like his he's york right because he's hot edward's brother but team lancaster
00:38:26.980 reassembles and they have a new leading man they have a new hero leading the team who is henry
00:38:35.460 Tudor. See this all wraps back around. I promise you this is the Tudor origin story. So who was
00:38:43.700 Henry Tudor and what was his claim to the throne? So Henry Tudor is the son of Edmund Tudor. So the
00:38:51.220 grandson of Owen Tudor, the hot Welsh man, grandson of Catherine de Valois, the French princess.
00:38:57.640 us. So that's that side of the family. Henry Tudor's mom is Margaret Beaufort, who we did
00:39:06.340 do a podcast episode about back in the spring with Lauren Johnson on. She's written a really
00:39:10.080 good new biography of Margaret Beaufort. In the context of this, let's explain who she is because
00:39:16.340 Henry Tudor has a claim to the throne on both sides, tangential claim to the throne. So on the
00:39:24.380 one side like so his dad is Edmund Tudor and his his grandmother is Catherine de Valois so like
00:39:32.000 technically remember Henry VI was the king of France so Catherine de Valois was the queen of
00:39:38.900 England she's a princess of France so like the Tudors have this French royal blood so that's
00:39:44.380 kind of their claim on that side Owen Tudor just like a hot Welshman and what he's bringing to the
00:39:48.400 party is just hotness basically and kind of messiness which you can see generation after
00:39:53.500 generation. But Henry Tudor, that side of things, that's not enough to claim the throne and be the
00:39:59.380 Lancastrian heir. He needs more bona fides. He needs more of a claim to the throne, which he
00:40:05.160 gets from his mom, Margaret Beaufort. So Margaret Beaufort was the daughter of John Beaufort,
00:40:13.140 the first Duke of Somerset. His grandfather was John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster and a son
00:40:19.620 of King Edward III. So this is like going back, back, back a ways, but she's like, she is descended 0.85
00:40:25.320 from King Edward III, but not via his actual wife. He was, she's, King Edward III was another
00:40:34.400 messy ass bitch. She had a mistress called Catherine Swinford. And so they had children 1.00
00:40:41.200 together before they were married. They later got married. And then the children they had before
00:40:47.460 they were married were legitimized afterwards so it's like jk those kids are legitimate because
00:40:52.400 you did eventually marry her and that's the beaufort claims to the throne it's these people
00:40:56.820 who were illegitimate turned legitimate so it's sort of like questionable like yes they were made
00:41:03.240 legitimate but like but they weren't in the first place so it's not like a full clear path of like
00:41:09.840 this is the heir this is the heir so because they weren't legitimate all along there's kind of like
00:41:15.100 a little asterisk over this whole claim to the throne. Margaret Beaufort is the daughter and
00:41:20.640 heir of John Beaufort because he dies and that's his only child. So he, like again, the messy
00:41:27.800 bitches in this family tree. So John Beaufort was banished from royal court, pending a charge of 1.00
00:41:33.780 treason against him. And he died, probably took his own life, which was at that time very scandalous
00:41:39.580 as well so this makes margaret his only child heiress to both a fortune and also she inherited
00:41:46.840 his claim to the throne which was like asterisks from this like illegitimate line turned legitimate
00:41:52.460 but also a lot of money so she has two things that make a lot of people see her as a really
00:41:57.600 viable bride the money and also this claim to the throne like whoever married her and had a child 1.00
00:42:03.640 that child would have that claim to the throne especially if it's a son because people take
00:42:08.040 sons more seriously. So at this point, at this point, we're flashing back a little bit before
00:42:12.600 Henry VI was like kidnapped constantly. He's just the king. Wars of the Roses hadn't started out
00:42:18.880 yet. And he was just, he had these half brothers, Edmund and Jasper Tudor, and they were all kind
00:42:24.140 of growing up together and they were pals. And he's like, okay, Henry VI at this point also
00:42:28.260 doesn't have a son. And it's like, who's going to be his heir? That's a big question. And he's like,
00:42:31.920 I don't know if I don't have a son, maybe my heir could be my half brother, my bro Edmund,
00:42:36.240 because we share a mother and that mother is like a French royal. So maybe Edmund will be the heir.
00:42:43.440 Anyway, so he's just like, but how can I solidify Edmund's claim to the throne? It's like, well,
00:42:48.180 if Edmund marries Margaret Beaufort, then he gets this sort of claim to the throne and also a bunch
00:42:53.060 of money. So at age nine, Margaret was required to formally accept this marriage later on. And
00:43:01.240 she was like a really um religious person in a sort of like spiritual like the angels are talking
00:43:07.560 to me sort of way later she claimed that she was divinely guided to do this and so she's nine and
00:43:14.500 she there's this kind of badass moment where she's brought to the king and he's like okay you're
00:43:18.560 gonna marry my half-brother and she's like let me think about it and she's this like nine-year-old
00:43:22.220 and then it's a power move and you see that she's like a powerful little girl who becomes a powerful 0.99
00:43:27.120 woman. But first she goes through this traumatizing, horrible thing. So at age 12, she's married to
00:43:34.600 Edmund Tudor, who is 24. And usually in this scenario, like when a very young girl is married 0.61
00:43:41.660 to an adult man, you wait several years until she's like, has the bodily ability to like have
00:43:48.580 a baby and not die. But because the Wars of the Roses were happening and Edmund Tudor was just
00:43:54.840 like i need to have a child as soon as possible with her for like succession reasons so he they
00:44:02.660 consummate the marriage um she becomes pregnant age 12 and then the wars are happening and because
00:44:11.860 he's the half brother of the king like he's on team lancaster he's taken captive he dies as a
00:44:16.180 plague in captivity so margar beaufort is left 13 years old um pregnant with her first child and
00:44:21.820 some 13 year olds are tall and hearty. She was teeny tiny. Like she looked much younger than
00:44:28.260 12, 13 when she was that age. Physiologically, it was really damaging for her to be pregnant
00:44:35.020 and to give birth. She did give birth to a son, Henry Tudor, but the birth was extremely difficult.
00:44:42.000 She almost died. It's incredible. She didn't die given the fact of like her size and her age and
00:44:47.320 the fact that this is like the 1400s. It does seem likely that the trauma, like the medical
00:44:55.820 and or physiological trauma of her son's birth caused some sort of physical injury to her.
00:45:01.480 Like she married again later, but she never had another child. So this is where Henry Tudor comes
00:45:07.560 from. Margaret Beaufort, as we talked about in the Margaret Beaufort episode a few months back,
00:45:13.880 she needs to be married like this is like in the society for a woman like she just needs
00:45:19.300 protection of a husband um and so she marries sir henry stafford and they stay together for
00:45:25.060 quite a long time the wars of the roses are happening they both survive it but when hot
00:45:31.180 edward takes over as king um margaret knows that her son henry tudor might be a target because of
00:45:37.560 his lancastrian claim to the thrones and he's like a teenager at this time so she gets her
00:45:42.640 brother-in-law Jasper Tudor to take teenage Henry Tudor to France just to keep him safe so that he
00:45:48.060 wouldn't be murdered as a possible Lancastrian threat. So her husband, Lord Stafford, dies
00:45:54.480 in a battle in the Wars of the Roses. So by now she's age 28, a widow yet again, and she
00:46:00.340 remarries quickly again, just for her own safety, this time to Thomas Stanley.
00:46:07.260 And because of his connections to Hot Edward and Elizabeth Woodville, she was able to return to
00:46:11.900 court um she got on the good side of the yorks she was chosen by queen elizabeth woodville to
00:46:17.600 become godmother to one of her daughters but then the whole thing happens hot edward dies
00:46:23.260 the princess in the tower scenario occurs richard the third seizes the throne and yet somehow
00:46:28.660 margaret who's just like and the wheeling dealing that she does i think we see this later on with
00:46:33.600 some other tutor descendants of theirs especially elizabeth the first like she's able to just like
00:46:39.060 state on the good books
00:46:40.280 just with her like 0.91
00:46:41.860 personal skills
00:46:43.160 and suddenly
00:46:43.960 she's back at court
00:46:45.300 and she's serving
00:46:46.060 the new queen
00:46:46.740 Richard III's wife
00:46:47.780 Anne Neville
00:46:48.780 but behind the scenes
00:46:50.680 what Margaret Beaufort
00:46:52.160 is doing
00:46:52.920 what she never lost sight of
00:46:53.980 is the fact that
00:46:54.520 she knew that her son
00:46:55.680 Henry Tudor
00:46:56.580 if you combine
00:46:57.840 her sort of tangential
00:46:59.400 like her sort of like 0.99
00:47:01.060 illegitimate term 0.75
00:47:01.940 legitimate claim
00:47:02.620 to the throne
00:47:03.080 with
00:47:04.420 with the Tudor
00:47:05.740 thing
00:47:06.120 like being the son
00:47:07.280 of Catherine de Valois
00:47:08.360 she knows like
00:47:09.060 put those together. Henry Tudor has like a pretty decent claim to the throne in this messy situation
00:47:13.620 that they're all in. And she's like, and the one thing that could really solidify Henry Tudor's
00:47:19.200 claim to the throne would be if he married Edward and Elizabeth Woodville's daughter,
00:47:24.840 Elizabeth of York, the two of them together, like the two sides, it would join the Plantagenet,
00:47:29.860 or sorry, it would join the Lancasters and the Yorks. Elizabeth of York has, at this point,
00:47:37.140 there's a whole thing where it's like elizabeth woodville like that marriage was declared like
00:47:42.320 illegitimate or something a lot of messy ass stuff is happening but basically if you put all these
00:47:46.280 sort of quasi claims to the throne together and these two people get married if they have a kid 1.00
00:47:50.660 then that kid is like a full okay claim to the throne so marga is scheming with former queen 0.57
00:47:57.880 elizabeth woodville to like kick off kick king richard the third off the throne and with force 1.00
00:48:04.180 with all of their allies together 0.85
00:48:05.700 replace him with Margaret's son, Henry Tudor.
00:48:08.660 And so they agree that they're going to marry 0.55
00:48:10.660 their kids to each other.
00:48:11.760 And then the now grown up,
00:48:14.020 and I would say based on various films I've watched,
00:48:18.120 Hot, Henry Tudor lands in Wales
00:48:21.840 with an army of French people. 0.99
00:48:23.160 I love that he lands in Wales
00:48:24.200 because the Tudor's like,
00:48:25.380 Owen Tudor is from Wales.
00:48:26.600 So they have this like Welsh connection. 0.95
00:48:28.700 So he's got an army of French people
00:48:30.420 because he's got the Tudor like power,
00:48:34.180 charisma. And he's able to get people to follow him. So they go to fight Richard, which they do.
00:48:42.340 The very famous battle, the Battle of Bosworth Field. This is the final battle of the Wars of
00:48:47.300 the Roses. Richard is killed. Henry Tudor takes over as King Henry VII, establishing the Royal
00:48:54.840 House of Tudor. Margaret Beaufort, for all her trouble, she was referred to in court as My Lady,
00:49:00.740 the king's mother the countess of richmond and derby and as the two moms arranged henry the
00:49:06.460 seventh marries elizabeth of york the daughter of elizabeth woodville and hot edward so this
00:49:11.240 she's a york he is a langaster they get married and this unites like we've seen so many times
00:49:17.540 before but this time successfully the two enemies unite king and queen the wars of the roses end
00:49:24.040 and so the king makes a new emblem for this era the tudor rose which is the combination of the
00:49:28.820 white and the red Lancaster and York rose and I will just mention between the two of them Elizabeth
00:49:35.280 of York had the stronger claim to the throne like she was a more legitimate eric like how I've been
00:49:42.060 talking for how long like 47 minutes about the complicated weird way that the tutors have this
00:49:48.320 sort of claim to the throne or if you add up all the weird illegitimate things together it's like
00:49:52.700 okay, sort of, but Elizabeth of York is the daughter of the king and queen. Like, anyway,
00:49:58.120 so marrying her really legitimizes him. This is the weird, complicated, somewhat questionable way
00:50:03.920 that the Tudor dynasty was created. And the fact that it was so complicated and messy and so many
00:50:11.100 people died and so many of the claims are so tangential, like you need to like unfurl all
00:50:16.180 these scrolls just to be like, who is the son of what and what's happening and who's legitimate
00:50:20.160 meant what this is part of why as we're going to see especially henry the eighth why the tudor
00:50:27.400 monarchs are so obsessed with who would be the next heir um because they knew that their claim
00:50:34.040 to the throne was kind of so messy this is why henry the seventh maybe like destroys catherine
00:50:38.740 novella's tomb um this is why henry the eighth is obsessed with having a son because they know that
00:50:44.400 if people don't believe in the tudor claim then there could be another civil war and like the
00:50:48.920 Wars of the Roses went on for ages. So many people died. It devastated the country. They all just
00:50:53.700 wanted things to just like continue on with this strong dynasty. The Tudors themselves,
00:50:59.000 I find interesting. Like there's such a famous dynasty. There's such a famous group of people.
00:51:05.760 And there are other equally messy, interesting dynasties, not just in English history,
00:51:12.240 but in like lots of countries' history. So like, why are these the ones that we always return to
00:51:15.820 again and again. And a large part of that is a certain William Shakespeare. So William Shakespeare
00:51:20.920 lived during the reign of Elizabeth I. And he wrote a lot of plays about the Tudors
00:51:27.260 and how great they were. And this is because those are the sorts of plays Elizabeth wanted to see
00:51:32.780 because she really, by the time she was around and like Henry VIII was king for a really long
00:51:37.360 time, Elizabeth was queen for a really long time. And that helped kind of like solidify the dynasty.
00:51:41.720 but she just wanted her family story propagandized to be like yeah they have these messy roots but
00:51:46.640 in these plays you see the tutors being these heroes sort of divinely ordained so it just makes
00:51:53.260 people just more accept the tutors like yeah she should be the queen this is fine especially when
00:51:58.480 elizabeth was the queen because having a queen without a king was kind of questionable but
00:52:02.560 she's like no look at this is fine and here's why it's fine it should be the queen so shakespeare's
00:52:07.300 plays were glamorizing the Tudors. And then for reasons we're going to get into actually in
00:52:14.720 next week's episode, why Shakespeare's plays became so well known that, and so famous that
00:52:22.380 the things that he was glamorizing became famous everywhere. So yeah, we're going to be looking
00:52:26.560 next week about some of the ways in which Shakespeare wrote about the Wars of the Roses
00:52:31.260 and especially how he made certain characters, certain real life people into heroes and villains
00:52:35.900 in those plays that's next week's episode on vulgar history tutors this new series that i'm
00:52:42.780 really excited about i think we're all gonna have a really fun time there's so much messy drama and
00:52:50.500 if you know me in this podcast or if you don't here's what you need to know i live for it i live

00:54:00.740 It's going to be a biography of another queen that people underestimate and don't realize how
00:54:06.300 cool she was. And her name is Anna of Denmark. So she was the wife of James VI of Scotland,
00:54:13.120 James I of England. She was the queen just as the Tudor era turned into the Stuart era.
00:54:19.420 And I'm so excited to write this book. And if you have questions about that too,
00:54:22.500 I can answer those on the Zoom live. And if you've been meaning to join the Patreon,
