00:00:00.000 hello and welcome to vulgar history of feminist women's history comedy podcast
00:00:18.780 my name is ann foster and this is season four and our theme is women trapped in towers and 0.93
00:00:25.000 assholes who put them there and this is episode six this is episode six and this is another non
00:00:34.500 margaret episode and in fact it is an episode about a person with a very unusual name for then 0.97
00:00:41.580 or for now we are talking about lady arbella stewart and so let's get into it there are some
00:00:51.420 connections in this episode to previous a couple of people we talked about in previous episodes
00:00:55.820 so i hope the family tree stuff isn't as convoluted and confusing as it sometimes is
00:01:03.500 so lady r bella stewart was born in 1575 guess what no date known can't do her astrological
00:01:13.720 chart she was the only child of two people whose names were elizabeth cavendish and charles stewart
00:01:21.980 who were these people well charles stewart was the son of margaret douglas the younger brother of
00:01:29.320 darnley and elizabeth cavendish was the daughter of a very wealthy and influential woman named
00:01:35.360 Bess of Hardwick so because of the Margaret Douglas connection Arbella was the niece of
00:01:45.000 Mary Queen of Scots she was the first cousin to King James the first slash sixth her great
00:01:52.600 grandmother was Margaret Tudor making Henry VIII her great-grand uncle so what all this means is
00:02:01.640 she was tangentially in line to the throne of being the monarch of all of England. And as you
00:02:09.640 know, it was just constant succession crises there. So this, as we've learned through the
00:02:16.180 Grey Sisters, for instance, was very important and affected her life profoundly. And I think we
00:02:24.480 all know that England has only had a handful of reigning queens. And I think no matter your
00:02:31.260 knowledge of the names of English monarchs I think we all know there was never a queen
00:02:36.200 Arbella it was like in that other episode we were where we were talking about Ferdinando
00:02:41.920 it's like pretty sure there was never a English king named King Ferdinando like anyone with a
00:02:48.320 cool name who seems like they may be going to become king just like does not happen anyway
00:02:53.800 and speaking of the name Arbella so why I asked on Twitter a few weeks ago in a country filled
00:03:03.640 with Mary's and Elizabeth's and Catherine's did was she given the name Arbella and it's not
00:03:09.040 Arabella like it's just Arbella A-R-B-E-L-L-A so I asked on Twitter I was just because I was
00:03:17.020 researching and trying to figure it out and I couldn't figure it out and I was just like maybe
00:03:20.780 one of my friends on twitter knows the answer and in fact a woman responded who is sarah gristwood
00:03:26.380 who is the author of arbella england's lost queen which is a biography of arbella that is one of my
00:03:33.200 major references for this oh i forgot to see my other references so for sure the book arbella
00:03:38.480 england's lost queen by sarah gristwood now my twitter friend an article on the freelance history
00:03:44.620 writer called the daring escape of Arbella Stewart that was written by Susan Abernathy
00:03:49.900 I also read up about Arbella on englishmonarchs.co.uk and the National Trust recently-ish
00:04:00.060 potentially still not sure with COVID what's going on they did an exhibition in the UK called
00:04:05.720 We Are Bess which is all about Bess of Hardwick which is one of Arbella's grandmothers and they
00:04:11.420 had a page there talking about Arbella Stewart as well and then there's a website called all
00:04:16.820 things Robert Dudley where Christine Hardweg wrote an article and you'll see what Robert
00:04:24.540 Dudley has to do with stuff in a little bit so okay so Sarah Gristwood explained that
00:04:32.860 Arbella was named Arbella likely as a reference to her Scottish slash Stewart heritage from her
00:04:38.760 father's side so that's the Margaret Douglas side as that name had featured among queens in Scottish
00:04:44.160 history and like has it I don't know a lot about Scottish history but I truly don't recall seeing
00:04:50.060 anyone named Arbella before but it's that sort of old-timey thing in the English language where
00:04:55.280 people whose name was Anne was sometimes called Agnes and vowels were like suggestions like
00:05:04.260 you just kind of people have a name and just kind of every time you write it you just sort of guess
00:05:08.460 how it's spelled like how there's all the spellings of Catherine for instance like of the
00:05:12.740 same person so Arbella is perhaps a derivation of Annabella or Amabel which were also royal
00:05:22.180 Scottish baby names so the name means prayerful like full of prayer and is a Greek name so maybe
00:05:29.780 her parents were fans of reading the classics but most likely it's that this was a name that
00:05:36.000 kind of this name but spelled differently was a name of some queens in scottish history and
00:05:42.400 her parents and more likely her grandmothers had royal aspirations for this little baby girl
00:05:48.500 and also in one letter her grandmother bess writes her name is arbel a-r-b-e-l-l so i don't
00:05:56.440 know what how you said her name but we're just going to say arbella because that is how
00:06:03.420 it's spelled so childhood one year after she was born Arbella's father Charles Douglas died of
00:06:13.700 I think disease I would have written it down if it was assassination or anything
00:06:19.520 not disease related so his title was the Earl of Lennox and so as his only child Arbella one
00:06:27.320 might think would have inherited the lennox lands in scotland but at this point the scottish king
00:06:33.720 like the king of scots was her cousin king james who is a baby at this point so she and king james
00:06:38.960 so arbella was 12 months old king james was 10 10 years old so they're both little kids
00:06:46.320 and they're cousins and he's the king um and so rather than arbella inheriting the lennox lands
00:06:53.240 james's regency government moved quickly to seize the lands reasoning that since james was
00:06:59.680 10 years old he could not permanently grant the title and anyway arbella was english by birth
00:07:04.560 and therefore her claim on the title was invalid arbella was also i don't even know what
00:07:10.560 second cousins or something to queen elizabeth um queen elizabeth wrote to the scottish region
00:07:18.460 asking on arbella's behalf asking for arbella to be given her inheritance but nothing
00:07:23.020 came of it. I'm guessing she did that because Bess of Hardwick was friends with Elizabeth and maybe 0.72
00:07:29.320 suggested she do that. Over the years, Arbella frequently referred to her lost lands, but she
00:07:36.100 was never formally granted the title Countess of Lennox. Despite this, when Bess of Hardwick had
00:07:42.520 a portrait of Arbella painted as a two-year-old, the title Countess of Lennox is prominent in the
00:07:48.500 picture. This picture is actually really great. I'll put it in when I post this on Instagram.
00:07:56.220 Toddler Arbella looks really shady. Like she's just world weary. And I don't know,
00:08:01.760 it's just like a toddler with a lot of emotion in her face. When Arbella was three years old,
00:08:09.500 her paternal grandmother, Margaret Douglas died. RIP previous episode.
00:08:14.380 arbella should have inherited margaret's jewels including a jewel set with a diamond a ruby and 1.00
00:08:21.760 an emerald with a great pearl however the steward like margaret douglas's servant who should have
00:08:28.940 handed the jewels over to arbella instead fled to scotland with the jewels and gave them to
00:08:34.080 king james so the lack of income for arbella was something that plagued her throughout her life
00:08:40.880 stuff she should have inherited she did not because people were dirt bags
00:08:45.940 let's see uh so then her father was dead so abella lived with her mother until she was six
00:08:55.000 years old at which point her mother then also died tragically of disease so normally rich england
00:09:02.120 orphans were under the control of william cecil elizabeth the queen's spymaster who was the master
00:09:08.820 of wards and i have to say when i first read that and for quite a while i thought it said the master
00:09:14.940 of wands which sounds cooler anyway he was the guy who got to decide who would take on which wards
00:09:21.820 but prior to elizabeth the queen's death best had asked for special permission oh sorry
00:09:28.760 no no but prior to the death of arbella's mom
00:09:34.600 Bess of Hardwick had asked for special permission for her Bess and her husband George to take
00:09:41.540 guardianship of Arbella and that was granted so when Arbella's mom died she went to live with
00:09:47.660 her grandmother and step-grandfather at their home Shrewsbury Hall so Bess of Hardwick
00:09:54.840 again I'm gonna do an episode about her she was just I forget how much I've said about her before
00:10:00.380 but she was a woman who just kept getting married and then each husband was a bit more powerful than 0.94
00:10:05.940 last and eventually she was like i think she was the most wealthy woman in england who was not the
00:10:11.060 queen she did a lot of home renovations best of hardwick made hardwick hall more glass than wall
00:10:17.800 so and best of hardwick just like really was excited for her granddaughter to become the 0.99
00:10:26.480 queen maybe one day. So she gave her granddaughter an education fit for a princess, and Arbella was 0.90
00:10:33.380 a good pupil. She became fluent in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, and Spanish, which is like
00:10:40.300 really impressive. She learned philosophy, and she was an accomplished musician.
00:10:46.660 Bess raised Arbella under the belief that she was destined to become the next queen of England.
00:10:51.240 Arbella was treated like royalty by Bess's servants who were instructed to address her as
00:10:56.560 your highness growing up Arbella spent some time with her aunt Mary Queen of Scots who at this
00:11:04.880 point in her life was under house arrest and was made forced to live with Bess and George
00:11:09.920 Mary Queen of Scots who had been separated from her son who is King James for while he was still
00:11:18.780 baby and she hadn't seen him in whatever however many years she spent a great deal of time with
00:11:23.420 Arbella and became extremely fond of her and that's a cute little thing but then when Mary 0.68
00:11:29.100 Queen of Scots discovered that Bess was planning for Arbella to become the next queen and to do
00:11:34.880 that meant that they had to discredit Mary which would discredit Mary's son James the relationship
00:11:40.640 between Arbella and Mary was soured I guess permanently when Arbella was around nine years
00:11:47.440 old Mary Queen of Scots who while she was in house arrest with Bess of Hardwick was really busy doing
00:11:53.860 a lot of sort of sneaking around and spying and that's part of what Alison Epstein's book A Tip
00:11:59.240 for the Hangman talks about you should read it so Mary Queen of Scots sent a letter to the French
00:12:04.940 ambassador claiming that Bess was trying to arrange a marriage between Arbella and the son
00:12:11.520 of latisse knolls and robert dudley whose name was also robert dudley because in that story
00:12:19.420 everybody was called robert so he was three years old at this time so robert dudley jr's three
00:12:23.840 arbella's nine this would have been an advantageous match for arbella because of latisse's
00:12:30.560 connection to the boleyn family uh it would have been a good marriage but of course you know
00:12:37.020 people can just marry who they want back in these stories but and also in addition mary queen of 1.00
00:12:42.500 scots was busy trying to make robert dudley look terrible because she was doing her own schemes
00:12:46.740 that relied on him looking terrible so she might have just made this up to try and make him look
00:12:52.200 bad not sure anything is possible but nothing came of this because robert dudley jr died one
00:12:58.680 year later aged four so this whole negotiation led to no child marriage when arbella was about 12
00:13:05.940 years old, her aunt, Mary Queen of Scots, was sentenced to death for continued scheming reasons
00:13:11.780 and was executed. At around the same time, Arbella visited Elizabeth's royal court in London in the
00:13:18.160 summertime. Elizabeth was so impressed with Arbella that she spoke openly about Arbella one
00:13:24.220 day being queen, which seems major, but Elizabeth talked a lot about a lot of people one day being
00:13:29.380 king or queen because she didn't want anyone to know who her heir was for her own Elizabeth-y
00:13:33.900 reasons but because of Arbella's status as I don't even know how what where she is in the line of
00:13:41.120 succession but there's the whole Elizabeth isn't having kids thing so then you're looking at like
00:13:44.640 who will it be the great sisters maybe Arbella so there were it was very important to figure out who
00:13:52.140 to marry her to to make her be like not too powerful but also like okay powerful in case
00:13:56.800 she ended up being queen so for instance when she was 13 her cousin james still just king of scotland
00:14:04.940 not of england yet suggested that arbella marry their cousin so they were cousins and a third
00:14:10.340 cousin whose name is lukovic stewart the stewarts were just like naming people not edward and i
00:14:18.580 appreciate it this match did not pan out other potential matches included alexander farnese
00:14:24.580 the duke of parma who could claim the english throne as the descendant of john of gaunt
00:14:29.440 um this idea was to secure toleration for english catholics or even win arbella for the catholic
00:14:36.620 faith um however the eldest son so of this family oh right sorry so the matches were the sons of
00:14:45.020 alexander farnese not alexander farnese himself he's a duke of parma his sons his older son was
00:14:50.320 ranuccio ranuccio was already married and the younger son or odordo was a cardinal and so it
00:14:58.040 wasn't allowed to get married the pope apparently was prepared to uh let odordo stop being a cardinal
00:15:06.200 so he could get married but queen Elizabeth I was like no mas and so that marriage plan was
00:15:13.360 ended before Arbella could even be approached so starting in around 1589 when Arbella was 13
00:15:20.140 someone called Morley attended on her and read to her in like a tutor type way as per a letter that
00:15:27.600 Bess of Hardwick wrote Bess wrote in her letter about Morley's service to Arbella over the space
00:15:33.920 of three years and a half she was also saying how much money she had paid for his services and that
00:15:42.640 sort of thing this is led to speculation that morley was potentially the poet christopher
00:15:47.060 marlow whose name was sometimes spelled that way because of the whole thing where tutors just made
00:15:51.700 up spellings every time i spelled a word or a name christopher marlow was also a spy so was he
00:15:58.160 there spying on them potentially arbella's name was yeah still in the mix as potential heir to
00:16:06.640 Elizabeth I until 1592. Because in 1592, a few things happened. First, Elizabeth got to hang
00:16:14.400 out at Elizabeth's royal court for around nine months. At this point, Elizabeth was 59 and
00:16:19.860 Arbella was 17. At the end of this visit, it seemed that Elizabeth had decided that James
00:16:26.220 would be her heir instead of Arbella. This was decided on the advice of William Cecil and his
00:16:31.620 son Robert Cecil who were both they both just preferred James because he was I assume a man 0.73
00:16:40.420 and also a king and also like and also like who the fuck is Arbella basically like if you have 0.75
00:16:46.700 to explain like here's who the new new king is England if you're like it's this random young
00:16:52.020 socialite or it's like this guy who is Mary Queen of Scott's son and is like already a king
00:16:57.120 it I kind of see where they're coming from a bit so after this point Arbella was invited
00:17:03.360 occasionally to visit Elizabeth but mostly stayed off living with her grandparents and she clearly
00:17:09.940 felt increasingly isolated because she's hot young teen and not being allowed to do anything it's
00:17:18.000 it's a bit of a Rapunzel scenario when Arbella was 22 her grandmother's home Hardwick Hall
00:17:25.500 more glass than wall was completed and that's where she would now live slash be imprisoned
00:17:31.080 because Bess was not letting her do anything or go anywhere so she was often talked about as a
00:17:38.740 suitable bride for many royal princes across Europe because of her pedigree Arbella never
00:17:44.520 even got close to marriage in her eyes marriage seemed to mean just getting out of this house
00:17:52.140 away from her grandparents like living her own life she just wanted she wanted to stop living 0.84
00:17:57.880 with her grandparents and be allowed to do things in desperation she began to plot her own marriage
00:18:04.120 a dangerous thing to do so like and if you're like in terms of her desperation like she's
00:18:11.840 27 so she's 27 years old still not married which is i know we always talk about like she got married 1.00
00:18:17.740 when she was six or whatever but like 27 was an age at which most eligible young women tended to
00:18:25.640 get themselves married so the fact that she wasn't and she clearly wanted to be and she
00:18:29.060 was trapped living with her grandparents she was unhappy um rumors of an affair at this point
00:18:36.180 became so strong that elizabeth they caught the attention of elizabeth who sent a trusted courtier
00:18:41.480 sir henry bronker to interrogate urbella and best of hard work to see like what was going on
00:18:47.060 the rumors were that she intended to marry edward seymour now i had to like go back and forth on
00:18:57.360 this family tree to figure out what was going on so edward seymour this edward was the grandson
00:19:02.480 of Edward Ned Seymour who had married Catherine Gray in the other side of this family tree so
00:19:13.240 first I was like wait is this the same guy it's the same romance in both of them but that was
00:19:16.560 like years apart like so Edward was a grandson of Catherine Gray who was related to Arbella in some
00:19:25.780 way and Arbella Arbella was a big fan of Catherine Gray she liked reading about it she liked hearing
00:19:31.120 about her she's she found in katherine gray and the whole way that katherine gray ran off to get
00:19:35.580 secret sexy married and then like was in jail and then like died like arbella was a stan for katherine
00:19:41.540 gray and so i guess she's like oh my god there's someone named edward seymour who i can also like
00:19:49.000 illegally fall in love with amazing so identically to the katherine gray scenario if arbella married
00:19:55.640 this edward seymour their combined royalty would make their children potential heirs which made
00:20:00.860 them threats because again it's combining this would be going through the it would be combining
00:20:07.740 two different sides of Tudor people but the original the OG Edward Seymour Catherine Gray's
00:20:17.180 widower still alive found out about this what his grandson was doing and was just like like
00:20:23.560 history is repeating and this is a bad idea so he reported it OG Edward Seymour reported this to
00:20:30.840 queen elizabeth and that's how elizabeth found out so when arbella was questioned she denied
00:20:37.020 having any intention of marrying without the queen's permission bess asked the queen for her 1.00
00:20:41.540 granddaughter to be placed elsewhere to learn to be more considerate or to let her get married to 0.99
00:20:45.820 somebody so bess wanted her out of there too like they were both there stuck together and neither
00:20:50.320 of them wanted it this is like a i don't know it's not like quite a gray garden scenario
00:20:56.120 it's not quite a what happened to baby jane scenario but it's like bordering on that sort
00:21:00.900 of thing but elizabeth wanted arbella to remain at hardwick hall where her actions could be
00:21:07.280 monitored in case she tried to run off and get married again best said well i can't guarantee 0.97
00:21:13.680 arbella's behavior because she's arbella's gonna arbella and the situation between arbella and her
00:21:21.560 grandmother became so fraught so Arbella went on hunger strike slash um mental stopping eating
00:21:29.080 situation until she was removed from Hardwick so the unhappy Arbella wrote many incoherent letters
00:21:37.680 to the queen or the queen's agent I don't know if that's William Cecil and it was concluded that she
00:21:43.500 was insane it has been theorized that she was suffering from an attack of porphyria which is a
00:21:50.600 genetic disease that a bunch of people in the british and other european royal families had
00:21:55.400 because of inbreeding so this is the same disease that george the third had the madness of george
00:22:00.720 the third it causes episodes of madness verbal incontinence and wine colored urine some people
00:22:07.680 suspect the mary queen of scots who was sick a lot might have had it potentially james might have
00:22:12.440 also had bouts of this disease but also i feel like arbella is just like needs some um talk
00:22:21.440 therapy maybe some anxiety and or depression medication and just to like get out of this
00:22:27.740 situation that she has no control over that she doesn't want to be in that is shades of like an
00:22:34.820 isabel of portugal situation where you're like is she insane like maybe but like can we kind of see
00:22:40.920 why that happened yeah we kind of can't so best was asked to prevent these letters so she's asked
00:22:47.140 to stop Arbella from mailing off these in quote insane letters so this led to angry scenes between
00:22:53.180 the two women as the relationship continued to deteriorate I feel like it's already deteriorated
00:22:58.380 to the max amount but apparently it could deteriorate further eventually the situation
00:23:03.040 was so unbearable for both of them Elizabeth eventually sent Arbella to the house of the
00:23:08.900 Earl of Kent in Bedfordshire. Shortly after this, Queen Elizabeth died, and as was suspected,
00:23:19.200 Arbella's cousin James became the new King of England. In May, Arbella was invited to London
00:23:25.500 to meet her Scottish cousin for the first time in person, and she was invited again in July when
00:23:30.580 James's wife, Anne of Denmark, arrived from Scotland, at which point Arbella was given the
00:23:36.900 honor of being the train bearer to the queen when she attended chapel so she was i don't know how 0.79
00:23:43.980 insane she was but she was able to do these important jobs in public so she won some more
00:23:49.400 points towards these new friendships in 1603 when she was approached by walter raleigh and other
00:23:57.440 courtiers to overthrow james and have herself arbella made the new queen she was like literally
00:24:04.160 she was invited by them to sign on like they were like can you please sign this letter to the king
00:24:10.680 of spain being like i'm rubella and i approve this message i am happy to take over being queen
00:24:16.560 rubella in fact did not sign the letter and thus did not get in trouble when the other
00:24:20.980 plotters were discovered and i think executed
00:24:23.920 james later appointed rubella as state governor which i guess is kind of like governess i think
00:24:32.780 in this context to his eldest daughter princess elizabeth and in 1605 arbella was named godmother
00:24:39.520 to princess mary which was another of his daughters arbella seems so again i'm just like
00:24:45.720 was she insane like maybe she was having a period of like writing insane letters
00:24:49.960 like there wasn't emails or texts then and whomst among us has not sent some regrettable
00:24:56.920 messages or tweets anyway it seems like our bell is doing good mentally speaking so she
00:25:05.220 continued on hanging out at royal court and she was doing okay and i think she was like yay i get
00:25:10.540 to interact with people who are not my grandmother and be living kind of my own life this is cool 0.95
00:25:16.620 so she apparently found the tone and morality of this royal court to be quote ridiculous and wicked
00:25:25.000 which it was because James was a character so Arbella in fact became good friends with
00:25:35.320 Anne of Denmark the queen and Arbella also grew very fond of James and Anne's son Prince Henry
00:25:41.820 so she's just like the cool auntie hanging out with a fam kind of like Mary Queen of Scots was
00:25:45.940 with her and then Arbella age 29 Sigismund Vasa the king of Poland sent an ambassador to England
00:25:57.220 to ask for Arbella to be his wife the offer was rejected because James like his predecessor
00:26:05.240 Elizabeth just did not want Arbella to marry anybody because they thought that would make her
00:26:08.540 too powerful because of her place in the line of succession and then years past Arbella continues
00:26:17.120 to be unhappy so clearly she was just like she was not in jail but she was effectively trapped
00:26:26.040 in that she couldn't do what she wanted to do so I seems like clearly she was inspired by her life 0.75
00:26:32.760 icon and role model and distant ancestor katherine gray to just like take life tits out and like
00:26:39.880 just do it her own way so she's by now she is 35 16 10 she's still unmarried and plans were 0.88
00:26:50.220 discovered that she had been planning to secretly sexy marry another seymour boy this one was
00:26:58.460 William Seymour then known as Lord Beecham he was 13 years younger than her and sixth in line to
00:27:06.340 inherit from James because he was also the grandson of Catherine Gray so you remember when Catherine
00:27:12.500 Gray was in jail and then she had the two babies in jail like those kids sons so this guy is the
00:27:19.840 son of one of the babies who's born in jail so literally like Catherine Gray all over again the 0.98
00:27:25.880 king was like wait is Arbella trying to seize power with this fucking Seymour boy like what's 0.97
00:27:31.660 with this people just love the Seymour boys people of the Seymour boys ladies love the Howard boys 0.99
00:27:37.740 like just these groups of dudes so Arbella was like I will live out my Catherine Grey fantasy
00:27:44.080 romance life this whole situation like she would not back down she was 35 and just like
00:27:50.820 cosplaying being Catherine Gray this was the final straw you would have thought there had already been
00:27:56.300 a final straw for Arbella's relationship with her grandma Bess but no this was a final straw
00:28:01.840 and made Bess cut Arbella out of her will even though oh sorry Arbella clearly was pursuing this
00:28:10.780 but officially she was saying like oh no I would never marry without permission is what she was 0.56
00:28:16.060 saying out loud so now she's cut out of the will she doesn't have the inheritance to begin with
00:28:19.260 anyway and then Bess of Hardwick died aged 80 in February 1608 months later uh that June
00:28:28.460 Arbella and William got a secret sexy marriage they were married June 22nd at Greenwich Palace
00:28:34.740 this was discovered James saw this marriage as a threat which it was but like just like
00:28:40.860 Catherine Gray it kind of wasn't it was kind of just two people who wanted to get married
00:28:43.860 although I don't know enough about William to say from his point of view maybe a threat
00:28:48.040 so the two of them were imprisoned just like her life icon catherine gray but ever since the
00:28:56.620 catherine gray scenario people knew like don't put people in the same building when we just
00:29:01.620 arrested them for secretly marrying each other because they might have babies so arbrello was
00:29:06.080 put in sir thomas perry's house in lambeth william seymour is put in the tower of london
00:29:11.060 fun fact william's imprisonment made him the fourth consecutive generation
00:29:15.840 of seymour men to spend time in this prison so you know there's going to be the seymour family
00:29:22.480 reserved suite at that point security in the tower at the time was not the best slash bribery probably
00:29:29.620 involved and william succeeded in leaving his confinement to visit arbella and the couple
00:29:36.060 exchanged letters some of which still exist the king found out and he ordered arbella to be
00:29:42.640 transferred to the custody of william james the bishop of durham which i guess is further away
00:29:48.200 harder for william to get to arbella who at this point in terms of like resiliency like she was not
00:29:57.480 at her best in a crisis clearly so she was really upset by this the bishop of durham arrived to pick
00:30:05.920 her up um to find her in a panic she was pale and swooning and she begged the bishop to postpone her
00:30:12.120 departure for one more day the bishop was like no because the king told me I had to do this
00:30:16.460 he spoke gently to her and managed to calm her down using mental health first aid techniques
00:30:21.200 clearly she finally agreed to start the journey and they agreed that they could stop the first
00:30:26.960 stop would be in a place called Barnett or Bella so here's the thing was she just high strung
00:30:32.700 and fragile and like having mental health issues exacerbated by her life situation 1.00
00:30:39.720 probably but also was she up to a scheme i think so so she became frighteningly ill
00:30:48.220 during this journey so she was carried in a litter which is like one of those like
00:30:54.600 the things where the fancy lady sits in it and like four men carry it with sticks
00:30:59.400 so she was carried to highgate and given chambers in the home of sir william bond
00:31:03.300 and his wife along the way she fainted three times and was given restoratives which i had
00:31:08.980 smelling salts i don't know what that would have been leeches whatever so she was lifted
00:31:14.640 unconscious from her litter and taken to bed where she lay unconscious for some time and
00:31:19.500 then finally fell asleep and i feel like how do you notice when she changed from unconscious to
00:31:23.720 asleep but anyway the bishop came to her bedside in the morning and reminded her like our bella
00:31:29.340 we need to like travel to my house for you to be imprisoned she protested that she couldn't even
00:31:35.160 take one step and a doctor came in and was like that is true she cannot take one step because of 0.99
00:31:40.280 her like female illness problems um the bishop wrote to the king's council for instructions
00:31:49.060 and her bella was granted a few days rest so okay there is some evidence that william visited
00:31:58.060 our bella and may have spent the night with her while she was there and this is part of why i feel
00:32:03.320 Like she was obviously upset, but might have been exaggerating what was going on with her
00:32:09.700 because she and William maybe had plans that she didn't want to upset.
00:32:13.640 So on the 21st, she was supposed to get back on her journey, but she would not leave.
00:32:19.620 The king ordered her to be taken by force.
00:32:23.180 So the bishop had her lifted onto her litter.
00:32:25.240 I just feel like does her bellow not walk anymore?
00:32:27.240 Okay.
00:32:28.260 She was in tears and complained of pains in her head.
00:32:30.860 she traveled a short distance to barnett which was supposed to be the first stop to begin with
00:32:35.120 but she was so ill they had to stop many times while her doctor administered cordials cordials
00:32:40.840 i don't that just makes me think and green gables what is it the raspberry cordial i don't know i'm
00:32:48.680 gonna guess that's like liquid medicines once in barnett arbella was unable to go any further
00:32:54.420 and the bishop again wrote to the council for more instructions like this is where you're like
00:32:57.900 it sucks there's not phones because like you have to write the letter sent off a guy on a horse to
00:33:03.080 take it like he's just like Arbella won't move what should I do like send the letter the letter
00:33:07.100 comes back from that guy like the next day like you can't make any quick decisions Arbella sent
00:33:12.320 her own letter saying if she was forced to travel further it would kill her so under pressure from
00:33:18.980 all sides the council gave her a month's rest beginning March 25th the bishop was allowed to
00:33:25.060 returned to Durham I'm sure he just like went home had a nice drink of ale and so she was put
00:33:32.320 in the custody of a person named Sir James Croft Croft believed Arbella was faking her illness
00:33:39.300 and ordered an outside doctor to examine her this doctor reported to the council he found her feeble
00:33:45.420 which was a medical term then I guess with a dull pulse her countenance heavy pale and wan and she
00:33:51.640 was in a dreadful melancholy state which again is this i think there's some existing physical 0.94
00:34:00.020 things happening to her but also i think she was um took advantage either of exaggerating her
00:34:07.700 symptoms or just she had symptoms and was like i'm gonna use this for my benefit anyway such drama 0.82
00:34:13.660 so they found new lodgings for her so she could go on her like mandated rest time so apparently
00:34:26.380 let's see so james croft her new um what's it called the uh parole officer or whatever
00:34:38.660 croft reported that arbella was immobile unable to even walk the length of her room
00:34:45.060 which this is where it's like does she have porphyria because it seems like something
00:34:50.000 serious is happening to her that may or may not be psychosomatic on april 28th she was still ill
00:34:55.960 and was granted more time to rest in the meantime this is where the scheminess comes this is where
00:35:02.560 i probably don't think i'm being disrespectful to her having health concerns but she was either 0.91
00:35:08.640 faking health concerns and scheming or had health concerns and was also scheming but like she's also
00:35:13.920 scheming so she's not this poor maiden anyway so she's granted more time to rest in which time
00:35:21.200 she communicated with william and her aunt mary talbot the countess of shrewsbury that it was her
00:35:26.960 intention to escape she had until june 11th to come up with a plan her aunt mary worked tirelessly
00:35:33.860 for arbella so there's i like that there's a lot of cool aunts in this story even though arbella's
00:35:39.100 servants have been dismissed she was still allowed to see her administrator compton and her maid anne
00:35:44.560 bradshaw so during this like rest slash scheming time arbella gained her health and strength but
00:35:49.640 managed to keep the doctors believing that she was still so sick she couldn't do anything her aunt
00:35:55.440 Mary managed to amass 1,400 pounds for Arbella, which she gave to Compton, along with a package of men's clothing.
00:36:02.540 Compton also gathered another 1,400 pounds, and Arbella had some jewels she added to the money.
00:36:07.860 At the end of May, Arbella proclaimed herself sufficiently recovered, and set June 5th as the day for her departure.
00:36:15.880 The day before, on June 4th, she told her maid she wanted to visit William, who was hiding nearby, and bid him farewell.
00:36:22.440 well the maid helped her into her disguise and promised to let no one enter her chamber until
00:36:27.520 she returned our bella wore a pair of french-fashioned hose which are pants trousers
00:36:35.000 or is it doublet and hose anyway basically she put on man clothes she put on french-fashioned 0.92
00:36:44.460 hose over her petticoats put on a men's doublet a man-like peruque which is i guess a hat with 0.97
00:36:50.360 long locks over her hair like a wig a black hat a black coal black cloak russet boots with red
00:36:56.560 tops and a rapier by her side i feel like this is a bit of an ostentatious outfit but maybe in this
00:37:02.020 era it was just that's how dudes dressed she put her money and jewels in a pouch and walked quietly
00:37:07.340 out of the house in broad daylight along with her servant markham love this for her love this
00:37:13.920 cross-dressing moment her bella and markham headed towards blackwell where compton was waiting with
00:37:19.620 saddle horses Arbella had been if you will recall not walking any further than the length of her
00:37:25.520 room for several months so she had had not much exercise during her illness period and she
00:37:31.520 struggled to make her way because riding horse is really physically demanding it was only a mile
00:37:37.300 and a half but by the time they arrived Arbella was so sick and faint uh that um one of the people
00:37:44.900 who saw her remarked it seemed unlikely this gentleman could ever make it to london on a
00:37:49.420 horse nevertheless once arbella was on the horse she regained her vigor and rode all the way to a
00:37:54.960 river in at blackwell they arrived at six o'clock and arbella was taken fainting from her horse so
00:38:00.320 here okay so like clearly she has some um physical ailments but also scheming and good for her
00:38:10.580 william was supposed to meet them at this inn but there's no sign of him
00:38:15.100 but her maid and bradshaw was there along with all of arbella's and william's baggage
00:38:20.300 a french ship captain named corvay had been hired to wait along the road to take them by boat down
00:38:26.300 the river to lee the party waited at the tavern for an hour and a half arbella changed out of her
00:38:32.640 extremely extra outfit and put on a dark cloak and hood the men who she was with insisted they
00:38:38.620 leave as it was getting dark and it'd be more difficult to hire someone to take them up the
00:38:43.700 river. Arbella begged for another half hour which they agreed and then at eight o'clock with tears
00:38:49.520 and hesitation Arbella agreed to go. The sun had set as the boats pulled away from shore but there's
00:38:56.580 still one more hour of daylight. After bribing some unenthusiastic rowers to complete the trip
00:39:02.880 the party arrived at lee at four in the morning corvée's ship lay about eight miles beyond
00:39:08.900 compton had no way of knowing if the ship was still waiting for them because they had waited
00:39:13.020 so long because william wasn't there um as a compton they spotted a ship nearby and asked
00:39:20.640 captain john bright to take them to calais which is france offering him a huge sum of money bright
00:39:26.680 said that he couldn't because he had orders to go somewhere else compton asked if there's any
00:39:30.880 other French ships nearby and Bright said yes he'd noticed a strange ship a few miles off so
00:39:34.580 then they went on and then sure enough they found Corvée the French captain who they had agreed to
00:39:40.000 sail them Arbella hoped that William was already on board but he was not so but these people all
00:39:47.800 acted so weird that John Bright the person they'd asked like hey can you sail us um he was just
00:39:55.040 curious what was going on so he followed them through his like oldie time binoculars and watched
00:40:00.080 as they boarded the friendship and we know this because later his testimony was taken and he
00:40:03.760 described what the people look like he said he described a woman closely covered with a black
00:40:11.020 hood over her head and face and he noticed that she had on white clothing and when she pulled
00:40:16.760 off one of her gloves she had a very white and clean hand so this white hand was just it became
00:40:26.600 her ruination because it's clearly like oh she was like someone who has not done stuff with her
00:40:32.000 hands she must be a rich person what's she doing here and here's the thing in the story of mary
00:40:36.820 queen of scots which is a lengthy story that has a lot of escapes and things in it there's one part
00:40:41.500 where mary queen of scots disguises herself as a washerwoman but then someone notices her hand
00:40:46.300 is so white and they're like that's not a washerwoman that's mary queen of scots so it's just
00:40:49.860 like i don't know history repeating again so she's on the ship and she still insisted on waiting for
00:40:57.780 william because the whole point here is running off with her husband but eventually um the compton
00:41:04.000 and corvay stopped listening to her and they just were like we have to go so they went the wind was
00:41:08.220 not favorable meaning the crossing the english channel would be even longer than usual but they
00:41:14.400 set off with arbella to go to france meanwhile william had a servant named rodney who had made
00:41:21.900 all the preparations for moving william's stuff and getting him out of the tower of london which
00:41:25.120 william seemingly had just been like doing with no problems for quite a while um let's see so
00:41:32.200 rodney had been staying with william's younger brother francis but didn't tell him about it
00:41:36.300 because he thought francis might inform the grandfather about william's escape the grandfather 0.99
00:41:40.280 again being og ned seymour i believe who would just be like stop fucking marrying redheaded 0.98
00:41:46.060 tutor women it doesn't go well so rodney wrote a letter explaining in cryptic terms what was 0.98
00:41:52.360 happening and arranged to have this letter delivered to his brother francis on the day
00:41:56.480 after the escape when he believed they would be beyond pursuit rodney got a disguise for william
00:42:03.120 i'm loving these disguise moments in this story william's disguise was a carter's frock and whip
00:42:10.660 a wig and beard of heavy dark hair so but here's the problem william had it so two days before the
00:42:18.700 day he was supposed to escape william laid in bed complaining of a toothache oh maybe it was fake
00:42:23.200 wait let me see if he was also faking illness on the day of the escape a carter drove up with a
00:42:28.720 load of wood where he stopped and went in to speak with the officials of the tower oh i see
00:42:33.420 okay so william i think was faking the toothache william got out from his bed and told
00:42:39.340 his valet that he had a chance to meet with arbella and convinced his valet to keep anyone
00:42:45.020 out of the room until he came back by saying he was too ill and must not be disturbed because of
00:42:48.660 toothache so he put on his beard and disguise and as soon as the carter turned to his cart
00:42:54.620 william boldly walked out and followed him through i love this like putting on a disguise
00:42:57.980 and just like in daylight hours just like peacing out like these are some great escapes so william
00:43:04.840 met rodney who was waiting for him with a horse um oddly it was eight o'clock when this happened
00:43:10.880 the same time arbella was leaving blackwell so clearly there had been some sort of obvious
00:43:15.100 misunderstanding between the two of them about what time they were supposed to meet each other
00:43:19.100 at the inn uh let's see william threw off his disguise and rode off on his horse
00:43:23.640 once there he realized oh wait so he went to the inn realized like oh my god herbella's already
00:43:29.220 left so then he took a boat to lee where she had been also um he paid somebody to take him to calais
00:43:36.260 so they they got to france but they didn't find herbella so they went to bruges sending a messenger
00:43:43.180 along the coast to find herbella and let her know like we're in bruges that's where you can find us
00:43:47.200 but the next day francis seymour william's brother read the letter from rodney and realized what
00:43:55.000 william had done francis just like rodney knew he would francis kind of sucks went to the tower to
00:44:00.920 verify william was gone the lieutenant of the tower entered william's room and they found that
00:44:07.740 he was not there so they went and informed the king that this had happened king james went into
00:44:13.780 a panic because that is a familial trait among the stewards i'm not having a cool head in a
00:44:21.920 crisis he issued a proclamation declaring that urbella and william was not to be assisted by
00:44:27.220 anyone or any country several people including cool aunt mary were arrested and were questioned 0.88
00:44:33.140 about what they did so here's the thing rodney sucks rodney should not have written this letter 0.98
00:44:38.860 like the white hand combined with rodney that's where this all went wrong damn it rodney so then 0.98
00:44:47.100 um people from the royal council assigned some guys to go and chase them down so this is where 0.71
00:44:55.940 they discovered about the guy who had seen the weird party with a woman with a white hand
00:45:00.000 who went to calais um so then a royal ship went to follow the french vessel being
00:45:07.640 sailed by corvée um they chased arbella's boat which was lingering awaiting the arrival of
00:45:15.320 william because there's no phones and they couldn't tell each other what they were doing
00:45:18.480 corvée tried to make a run for it but there was no wind and it was oldie times and boats didn't
00:45:23.520 have engines so the boat was overtaken 13 shots were fired straight into the air and they had to
00:45:29.000 give up arbella came forward and surrendered herself becoming a prisoner of the king when
00:45:33.540 asked where her husband was arbella replied she didn't know but she trusted he was safe and that
00:45:37.980 his escape was consolation for her own capture and misfortune and then arbella was returned to
00:45:43.540 england and imprisoned in the tower of london where her husband had just escaped from although
00:45:49.660 she argued she had only sought freedom to live with her husband she was kept in close confinement
00:45:54.340 in the tower although she was never actually charged with a crime it's just she's just such
00:45:58.180 an inconvenient person to so many people and that's what sucks they just kind of wanted to
00:46:03.560 keep her out of the way and she went insane so her health deteriorated like further but she still
00:46:13.380 had hopes that her cousin james would take pity and release her she even ordered new dresses for
00:46:17.600 the marriage of princess elizabeth in 1613 i guess hoping she could attend the wedding
00:46:21.780 she did not in 1614 she fell ill some suspected she was faking for sympathy or as part of a plot
00:46:29.920 to escape i think all three like she was sick but also she hoped to use it to her advantage
00:46:36.980 she refused food and she refused medical care and her health got worse as happens when you don't
00:46:43.520 have food she spoke of her hopes that william would come and rescue her and then she died
00:46:49.480 of starvation um on september 25th she was only 39 years old james refused to give her bella 0.79
00:47:00.000 james petty bitch refused to give her bella a royal funeral and her body was placed without 0.90
00:47:06.000 ceremony in the vault of her aunt her cool aunt mary queen of scots in westminster abbey 0.98
00:47:11.700 william remained on the continent for a few years before requesting permission to return to england
00:47:18.860 which he was granted. Two years after Arbella's death, he married Lady Frances Devereaux,
00:47:25.440 the daughter of Robert Devereaux, the granddaughter of Lutice Knowles, and they had
00:47:29.760 eight children. He, William, became a valued member of royal court and did totally fine for
00:47:34.480 himself, which is such bullshit. So over 100 letters written by Arbella have survived. 0.95
00:47:42.660 in 1993 a collection of them was published edited by sarah jane steen providing details of her
00:47:49.860 activities and ideas this is a lot of why we know what she thought and how like how she's such a
00:47:54.700 stan for katherine gray sarah jane steen also says that there's a shakespeare connection so
00:48:02.880 there's a play written by shakespeare called cymbeline which is written around the same time
00:48:07.960 as Arbella's cross-dressing attempted escape which has sometimes been read as a reference to Arbella
00:48:13.100 because the heroine in that is called Imogen and she does cross-dressing and is virtuous
00:48:19.520 and then in 2005 Sarah Gristwood published Arbella England's Lost Queen there's been
00:48:25.920 not as much written about her as there are about other Tudor people and I think she's definitely
00:48:33.020 somebody worth knowing about. That's Arbella Stewart. Quite the saga. I just feel so bad
00:48:41.620 in a similar way as like Mary Grey, Catherine Grey, where it's just like someone who just wants
00:48:46.740 to like be an independent-ish person, like just wants to marry someone and then ends up
00:48:53.000 in jail forever. It's just, I wish Arbella got to do more stuff. So we're gonna give her a score
00:49:00.120 here scandaliciousness i feel is very the stuff she did was the scandalicious like the um 1.00
00:49:11.800 like the cross-dressing escape hiring the ship was like she didn't do a lot of scandalicious 0.99
00:49:18.160 things but the thing she did was of such high quality scandaliciousness i'm gonna give her 1.00
00:49:23.900 seven i think her scheminess again there was it wasn't like a lifetime of numerous schemes 1.00
00:49:31.440 but she well maybe there was we still know about them but when she had a scheme it was like she 0.99
00:49:37.480 got the outfit she got the people helping her like she got the ship hired like her scheminess was
00:49:42.180 she had some plans like the plans she had were seemingly pretty well thought out except for a 1.00
00:49:50.340 couple of small details goddamn rodney i'm gonna give her seven for scheminess as well her 0.87
00:49:55.580 significance it's the sort of thing where like well she was very significant to elizabeth and 0.99
00:50:01.140 james such that they didn't want her to marry anybody because then she would become too
00:50:05.340 significant so her significance kind of is what made her a threat but like her significance
00:50:11.120 to the annals of history like if she inspired shakespeare cool but like her letters were
00:50:17.000 published but i don't know if the trajectory of world history was changed by actions that she was
00:50:23.980 involved in which isn't her fault it's just that's what this category is for um i'm gonna give her
00:50:29.720 four for significance sexism bonus is 10 and i would give her more than that if i could 0.99
00:50:35.800 because just all of it just all of it just and sexism doesn't mean just like men treated her
00:50:45.220 badly or whatever it means like the way that best of hardwick treated her was shitty and a lot of it
00:50:50.400 was everybody saw her as a threat because of who she might marry because then she might have
00:50:54.020 children which is all just rooted in a patriarchal worldview so that's let's see that's a 28 which is
00:51:05.080 i think the same as margaret douglas her grandmother and also the same as latisse
00:51:12.620 Knowles who she's related to in some capacity I think right I just want to see where Catherine 0.94
00:51:19.960 Gray was a 29 so Arbella 28 Catherine Gray 29 and that's because she had like jail babies and
00:51:27.940 also her children went on to do stuff but I think Arbella would be honored by that to be so close to
00:51:33.140 her but I think Arbella would agree that Catherine is still just that one step above her that is Lady
00:51:39.340 Arbella Stewart which is a wild ride as per ever on this show and then I have a recommendation
00:51:48.560 for you so there's a new podcast that just just started that's called Telling Our Twisted History
00:51:54.200 it's on CBC Podcasts so the description of it is there's just been at the time I'm recording this
00:52:02.900 I think two maybe three episodes of it and so it's the description is words connect us words
00:52:09.060 hurt us indigenous histories have been twisted by centuries of colonization this show brings us
00:52:14.520 together to decolonize our minds one word one concept one story at a time it's thus far i really
00:52:22.760 enjoyed the two episodes i've listened to and i think in this era at the time i'm recording this
00:52:28.000 there's a lot of recognition going towards the truly horrific things that have happened to
00:52:38.980 indigenous people specifically in canada but in north america all over the place and this is
00:52:44.500 i love this as a way to to learn these stories from indigenous people and also when i was listening
00:52:52.300 to this podcast and preparing this podcast that i'm doing i was just thinking what this was all
00:52:56.220 happening simultaneously like jamestown like the first major british settlement in north america
00:53:05.120 that was James from this story like Arbella's steward Arbella's cousin James so like all this
00:53:11.100 was happening to her meanwhile there's all this other stuff like meanwhile the colonization
00:53:15.660 stuff was happening like just it's it's a lot anyway very good podcast super recommended
00:53:23.860 telling our twisted history and then if you want to keep up with me in this podcast
00:53:32.160 these urls are slightly different than sometimes but i usually put them in the show notes too so
00:53:36.160 you can find them but these are just updated updated urls so um all the books that i've
00:53:41.460 mentioned in this podcast and again the um sarah sarah gristwood sarah gristwood's book arbella
00:53:48.360 england's lost queen super good i'm really happy that arbella gets a full-length biography that's
00:53:54.320 done really um sensitively very respectfully but also just like so much dramatic stuff happens in
00:54:01.980 it anyway so all the books i've recommended are listed on my page at bookshop.org slash shop
00:54:09.360 slash vulgar history then the merch we have is at this is a new address but again i'll put the link
00:54:15.680 in there so vulgarhistory.creator-spring.com because it used to be teespring and now it's
00:54:21.540 just called spring and then also i have my patreon which is patreon.com slash ann foster writer and
00:54:27.980 so that's where if you want to get some bonus episodes that's where i put those every month
00:54:31.520 I do an extra what I call a mini episode which is I think in general they're shorter than these
00:54:38.360 ones but some of them are as long as these ones so I do these so this asshole episode is just 0.68
00:54:42.980 digging into some of the like awful shitty men from the stories I've done one about James 0.95
00:54:47.360 or Bella's cousin James I've done one about um Captain John Smith well known from the Pocahontas 0.60
00:54:53.920 story so that's also happening at this same era anyway so if you support me there that is the
00:55:00.580 perk that you get and also the money from there goes towards me being able to do more seasons of
00:55:05.160 this podcast which i really want to do and money helps with that so i also have a website annfoster
00:55:12.780 writer.com you can find us on instagram vulgar history pod on twitter at vulgar history
00:55:17.700 and my name is ann foster and you know just like channeling our bella just like put on like 1.00
00:55:26.880 a disguise but I'll know it's you because you'll have your mask on and your tits out 0.97
00:55:33.340 the war is over and both sides lost kingdoms were reduced to cinders 0.98
00:55:55.200 an army scattered like bones in the dust.
00:55:58.800 Now the survivors claw to what's left of a broken world,
00:56:02.980 praying the darkness chooses someone else tonight.
00:56:06.260 But in the shadow dark, the darkness always wins.
00:56:10.540 This is old school adventuring at its most cruel.
00:56:14.020 Your torch ticks down in real time.
00:56:16.340 And when that flame dies, something else rises to finish the job.
00:56:19.940 This is a brutal rules light nightmare
00:56:22.140 with a story that emerges organically
00:56:24.840 based on the decisions that the characters make.
00:56:27.520 This is what it felt like to play RPGs in the 80s
00:56:29.880 and man, it is so good to be back.
