00:00:00.000 Hello, and welcome to Maintenance Phase, the podcast where we go one and we go all.
00:00:16.540 Oh, no.
00:00:17.420 I am Michael Hobbs.
00:00:18.920 And I am Aubrey Gordon.
00:00:20.720 And you can find us on Patreon at patreon.com slash maintenance phase and on TeePublic.
00:00:27.200 We've got merchandise for you.
00:00:28.760 Both of those links are set out nicely for you in the show notes and at maintenancephase.com.
00:00:34.760 And I am so jazzed about our conversation today.
00:00:38.200 I can't even tell you.
00:00:39.600 Yes, our guest is one of our favorite reporters, Mike Rothschild.
00:00:42.520 Hello, how are you?
00:00:43.440 Thanks for having me on the show.
00:00:44.620 Mike is one of our favorite QAnon reporters.
00:00:46.480 And he's also working on a book called The Storm is Upon Us that comes out in October or September?
00:00:53.500 September 21st.
00:00:54.600 Okay, Mike, do you know how I found you on Twitter?
00:00:56.980 No.
00:00:57.180 You were fighting with somebody about your last name. 0.81
00:01:00.080 Somebody was like typical Rothschild.
00:01:02.380 Like, of course he would say this.
00:01:04.000 He's a Rothschild.
00:01:04.820 I guess. 0.99
00:01:05.660 And you were like, give me a fucking break, dude. 0.97
00:01:08.620 I did when Michael started talking about like, let's do this guest episode. 0.97
00:01:13.120 I was like, boy, oh boy, rough beat writing about QAnon with the last name Rothschild.
00:01:18.220 I'm like, woof. 0.99
00:01:19.040 On the one hand, it's a pain in the ass, but it's also sort of a constant talking point. 0.98
00:01:24.260 Like, it always gives me something to talk about with people. 0.98
00:01:27.180 And to sort of talk about how I got into all of this and like part of it was my name and
00:01:31.360 then part of it isn't.
00:01:32.400 Yeah.
00:01:32.560 You don't have to poke very hard to find anti-Semitism in a conspiracy theory.
00:01:36.280 And their reaction to my last name is almost always the thing that I see.
00:01:40.680 And importantly for this show, Mike also used to cover wellness scams.
00:01:45.500 Yeah.
00:01:45.840 I talked a lot about pseudoscience and wellness and woo-woo stuff and, you know, anything
00:01:51.280 that comes in a bottle and purports to do a bunch of different things or cure a vast
00:01:57.640 array of diseases was sort of my jam before I really got hardcore into conspiracy theories.
00:02:03.480 This is our jam, too. This is our mutual jam.
00:02:06.200 Extreme jam. I'm curious about, did you have any particular favorite stories that you covered when
00:02:13.020 you were sort of doing wellness reporting? Yeah, I wrote, I think it was beginning of 2014,
00:02:17.880 I wrote a piece for the blog of the critical thinking podcast Skeptoid on the oil pulling
00:02:24.720 phenomenon. I don't know if you guys are familiar. No, sure am. Okay. So oil pulling, just for those
00:02:31.320 of you who are mercifully unfamiliar with this is the idea that if you swish a small amount of
00:02:37.280 oil, whether it's coconut oil or olive oil or palm oil in your mouth and pull it through your teeth
00:02:44.200 and then spit it out you will be ridding your body of toxins this was like a huge thing maybe
00:02:52.240 five to ten years ago yeah uh it was mentioned not the piece but oil pulling itself was mentioned
00:02:58.640 on the dr oz show oh no and one of the interesting things i figured out was that you have these kind
00:03:04.280 of pseudoscience cure-all things that purport to treat everything and things that have nothing to
00:03:11.140 do with each other. Like people thought oil pulling would, it would cure your asthma and it
00:03:15.960 would cure your acne and it would cure your AIDS. None of those things have anything to do with each
00:03:22.500 other. Right. And you run into this stuff, certainly with COVID and with QAnon, with the
00:03:27.560 MMS, the bleach solution, where it's, you know, claims to treat everything under the sun if you
00:03:34.080 survive taking it. Right. And also this thing of like, there's no actual scientific mechanism
00:03:38.520 behind any of these things.
00:03:39.800 It's just like, it's a thing that cures stuff.
00:03:41.800 But there's no reason why something would cure a skin condition
00:03:44.420 and also like an immune suppressing virus.
00:03:47.420 Right.
00:03:47.640 By briefly being in your mouth.
00:03:49.540 Yeah.
00:03:50.340 Totally.
00:03:50.820 So we wanted to have Mike on to talk about the wellness woo-woo to QAnon pipeline.
00:03:57.660 This is something we've noticed over the last 18 months,
00:04:00.500 that there is a weird entry point into QAnon conspiracy theories
00:04:04.920 through yoga and toxins and cleanses and stuff. It's not the biggest or the only on-ramp,
00:04:13.000 but it's one of the on-ramps. And it's a surprising one. Yeah. I think it's one that
00:04:17.480 folks don't necessarily expect that getting into sort of X, Y, or Z newest wellness fad
00:04:23.660 can, for some folks, kind of put them on this track, kind of filter them or funnel them
00:04:29.540 closer and closer to anti-vax stuff, closer and closer to QAnon stuff. And QAnon itself is like
00:04:36.720 closer and closer to organized white supremacy. Yes. So, Mike, yeah, can you just walk us through
00:04:42.600 sort of before we get started, like what is QAnon? Sure. So what QAnon really was for the vast
00:04:49.720 majority of its life was a cult-like conspiracy theory that holds that a team of military
00:04:56.140 intelligence officers are using the image board 8chan to leak cryptic clues to an upcoming purge
00:05:05.620 of the deep state that Donald Trump will carry out with a clutch of hundreds of thousands of
00:05:11.480 sealed indictments. And that once these indictments are unsealed, the entire Democratic Party, the
00:05:17.320 entire finance apparatus, big business, Hollywood, celebrity will all be taken down in a giant storm
00:05:25.640 of arrests that has been called the storm or the great awakening. And that after all of these
00:05:31.360 horrible people are taken down and charged with treason and pedophilia, we will enter into a great
00:05:37.480 utopia of peace and freedom and prosperity. Right. It's also it's what's amazing to me is that a lot
00:05:43.360 of people who are like kind of QAnon supporters don't necessarily identify as such, but they're
00:05:48.440 often getting these posts that are like hashtag save the children or hashtag why won't they come
00:05:54.400 home or something like that. These things that seem very innocent online, like, of course,
00:05:58.240 who wants to kidnap children? Nobody. Right. So you're like, I'm going to raise awareness of this
00:06:02.260 child safety thing. But then that ends up being an entry point for a lot of people into weird,
00:06:07.220 like racist, anti-science. Like, it just seems like it's a really difficult thing to track
00:06:11.620 because it seems to mean something different for everybody. Yeah, that's a big part of it.
00:06:14.920 You know, the polling on QAnon is kind of all over the place and the percentages are fairly low.
00:06:20.040 But when you get into asking people whether they believe that the election was stolen or
00:06:24.260 whether they believe that there are vast pedophile rings at the top of Hollywood and the Democratic
00:06:28.680 Party, the numbers shoot way up. Yeah. So you get a lot of people who believe in the tenets of QAnon,
00:06:34.480 believe in the mythology of QAnon, but either still don't really know anything about it or
00:06:39.040 actively claim that they aren't part of it. You know, they'll say, I'm not one of those crazy
00:06:44.020 QAnon people. You know, I don't think JFK Jr. is alive. I just think that there are child
00:06:48.760 trafficking tunnels underneath Central Park. It's like Obamacare. When you ask people,
00:06:53.460 like do you like medicaid expansion do you like kids being able to stay on their parents insurance 0.98
00:06:56.980 they're like yeah i love all that stuff that's great do you like obamacare no fuck obamacare
00:07:00.480 that's what obamacare is you actually like obamacare this is like a very classic political 0.77
00:07:05.380 polling thing too right that like yeah anytime you ask people like do you like new taxes they're
00:07:10.020 like no get out of here and then you're like do you like new services for children and seniors
00:07:14.020 they're like yes that sounds lovely thanks right you're like well what do you think are the main
00:07:19.360 misconceptions about QAnon just, I guess, as a, God, do you say movement? What even is the noun
00:07:25.520 that we're using? Well, that's another tricky one. And what you run into with QAnon very quickly is
00:07:30.940 that it's not any one thing. It is a political movement, but it's not like a political party.
00:07:37.320 It has a lot of new religion aspects, but it's not really a religion. It's very evangelical
00:07:42.120 Christian in its tenets. It's very cult-like, but it's also not entirely a cult because it's
00:07:48.500 missing some of those critical ingredients. So a lot of people tend to cover QAnon through one
00:07:54.120 angle. They'll cover it through the cybersecurity angle or the sort of conspiracy angle or the cult
00:07:59.740 angle, and they miss a lot of other aspects of it. QAnon, I think, is so successful. I hate to
00:08:05.180 use that word, but I think you really have to because it caters to so many different people
00:08:09.880 in so many different ways. And that's what makes it so virulent and so difficult to get people out
00:08:14.880 of. I'm curious about sort of what the wellness pipeline part looks like, right? Like, where does
00:08:21.400 it start for folks? Sure. So it really starts in terms of psychology. It starts with the distrust
00:08:28.380 of authority. So it starts with the distrust of what we're being told by experts, by the media,
00:08:35.080 by big pharma, by popular doctors. We think that we are being lied to all the time by everybody.
00:08:42.440 That's a big part of that is that the media is not telling you the truth.
00:08:45.840 Democrats aren't telling you the truth.
00:08:47.080 Even a lot of the Republicans aren't telling you the truth.
00:08:49.080 But Q tells you the truth and Trump tells you the truth.
00:08:52.200 Right.
00:08:52.300 And it is one of those culty aspects.
00:08:53.740 You know, trust us.
00:08:54.880 Don't trust the outside world.
00:08:56.520 But where so many wellness conspiracy theories and big pharma conspiracy theories and anti-vax conspiracy theories come from is just this basic distrust of what we're told.
00:09:06.540 We feel constantly everybody is trying to get one over on us.
00:09:10.340 Everybody's trying to screw us, trying to hurt us, trying to take our money.
00:09:14.540 So that's really where a lot of it comes from.
00:09:16.520 It's just this basic idea that the outside world is out to get you.
00:09:21.660 And so much of that is wrapped up in corporations and in medicine.
00:09:24.980 I mean, speaking of Dr. Oz, I mean, that's also almost word for word what you hear from
00:09:29.940 a lot of these wellness influencers.
00:09:31.800 I saw a magazine called What Doctors Don't Want You to Know at Whole Foods.
00:09:36.680 This is a very mainstream message of these kind of cleanse type things that like they're keeping something from you.
00:09:44.240 And it's a pretty short leap from that to they're also keeping like trucks full of children from you.
00:09:49.500 Part of what makes this all tricky is like without getting too far down the tinfoil hat road, there are ways in which many people are being exploited, but they're much more banal than that.
00:10:00.700 Uber comes up with a business model or Lyft or Amazon or whoever where they treat their employees like contractors so they don't have to pay them health insurance, right?
00:10:10.340 It's sort of stuff that's happening out in public in front of all of us, but it doesn't have the same sort of intrigue or punch.
00:10:18.440 It's not secret.
00:10:19.280 And that's so much of what drives conspiracy movements like QAnon and wellness conspiracy theories also is this idea of secret knowledge, that there is a clutch of secrets that the powerful people have access to, the powerless people, i.e. us, do not have access to.
00:10:37.720 And somehow by believing in QAnon or reading these, you know, holistic healers and all these other people who have sort of built themselves up as experts in this fringe world, you have access to the secret knowledge.
00:10:51.080 You are let in to the darkest things that they, you know, whoever they is, don't want you to know about.
00:10:57.560 And now you can prepare yourself.
00:10:59.320 You can fight back.
00:11:00.460 And that's very compelling and that's very powerful, especially during a pandemic.
00:11:04.700 What is your sense, Mike, of what percentage of QAnon people sort of do come in through the wellness woo-woo track?
00:11:12.520 It's very hard to pin any kind of numbers on any of this, but I would say that probably during the pandemic, quite a few people did.
00:11:20.000 You know, you had the explosive growth of these Facebook groups devoted to anti-5G and anti-vaccine and anti-Bill Gates and conspiracy theories about where the virus came from and whether it was a bioweapon and whether it was the deep state.
00:11:35.260 And, of course, it's so easy to jump from those groups to other groups because of Facebook's algorithms.
00:11:40.740 You know, you join an anti-5G group because you have some concerns about 5G Internet and then it recommends an anti-Bill Gates group.
00:11:47.000 And you go, oh, well, I've heard some bad things about Bill Gates.
00:11:49.180 maybe I should join that and do more research. And then it recommends a group about anti-vaccine
00:11:54.120 stuff. And that recommends you a group about the Great Awakening, which is QAnon. So you very 0.88
00:11:59.600 quickly and efficiently radicalize yourself into a violent, anti-Semitic, far-right conspiracy cult
00:12:07.920 without having any intention of doing so. So these groups had huge membership. They had hundreds of
00:12:14.540 thousands of members in some cases. There's also a way in which you can get sucked into these
00:12:18.880 things and not necessarily see its fundamental political nature. It's always seemed to me like
00:12:23.600 the majority of QAnon is like people that are Trump supporters and like trying to sort of
00:12:30.900 process the fact that they thought this guy was going to be a great savior and they voted for him
00:12:35.620 and he's not doing anything. And like everything that he says in public is deranged. And it's like,
00:12:41.460 uh, it's not deranged. It's, it's a secret code. Yeah, that's the ticket. But if you're someone
00:12:46.360 who comes in through the wellness track or the anti-vax track, you might not necessarily
00:12:51.000 like see that part of it.
00:12:52.620 Like it might not necessarily lead you to 8chan.
00:12:55.180 Yeah.
00:12:55.460 And in fact, one of the things with QAnon that, you know, the promoters are such a big
00:12:59.320 part of it is that they don't want you going to 8chan.
00:13:02.100 Right.
00:13:02.340 They don't want you going to these image boards because these image boards are horrible places.
00:13:06.660 They are racist or anti-Semitic.
00:13:08.700 I mean, even like I'm fairly well versed at navigating a place like 8chan or it's called
00:13:14.220 8kun now.
00:13:15.020 but even i'm sort of taken aback once in a while by just how awful these places can get people
00:13:21.380 don't embrace things like that you you don't want to be linked to that so you know they don't want
00:13:26.820 boomers and and sort of yoga moms going to the anti-semitic meme part of hn because that's going
00:13:33.860 to turn them off you know because those people don't think of themselves that way they don't
00:13:37.440 think of themselves as racists or anti-semites they just they just have questions they they want
00:13:42.220 they want answers they need they need to understand why things are the way they are
00:13:47.500 and sometimes that will eventually lead to anti-semitism but it's done in a very kind of soft
00:13:52.800 gentle justifiable way it's not right holocaust denial it's just like oh maybe these banks don't
00:13:59.640 have our best interests in mind and oh who controls these banks so it's very it's very
00:14:04.100 gentle and soft and that's where so much of this wellness stuff is right it's like gentle and soft
00:14:09.140 unless you're jewish and then you're like no i got it yeah like message received mike are there
00:14:14.840 any prominent examples of wellness influencers who have gone down this track yeah there's some
00:14:20.420 lifestyle influencers and mommy bloggers and holistic people who have hundreds of thousands
00:14:25.940 of followers who got really into this stuff right during the wayfair thing and the you know the big
00:14:33.320 save the children explosion like you would have i saw a couple and i can't remember her name i
00:14:37.480 mentioned her in the book, but you know, pandemic parenting has turned my brain into pudding. So I
00:14:41.940 can't remember anything, but there's some Instagram influencer has like a million and a half followers
00:14:47.800 who just started talking about trafficking children and Wayfair and what they're doing to
00:14:53.240 these kids. And you can tell that the engagement was bringing in people who had no idea what QAnon
00:14:59.580 was, have no idea about the deep state, but they're really concerned about kids. So they get mixed up
00:15:04.960 into all of this. And then they start to go down these rabbit holes because these these rabbit
00:15:09.360 holes lead them to what they believe are answers. And is it mostly through Facebook that this is
00:15:14.220 happening in your experience? It's Facebook and Instagram. Yeah, it is also YouTube. I mean,
00:15:18.200 all of this stuff has changed now because there have been so many crackdowns finally.
00:15:21.900 But for a long time, it was Facebook groups where you would sort of meet and congregate with other
00:15:26.880 people. And it would be Instagram where some influencer that you followed started to talk
00:15:32.300 about this stuff and it would start to pique your own interest. Why do you think Facebook and
00:15:35.260 Instagram are so central to it? Like, why is it Facebook and Instagram and not Twitter, do you
00:15:38.700 think? Facebook and Instagram really have that kind of visual aspirational culture. You know,
00:15:44.360 you can aspire to look as good in a bikini as I do. I think I look great in a bikini, by the way.
00:15:50.500 Facebook and Instagram are also tools that we just use to tell people what's going on in our life.
00:15:54.800 Right. And also, it's so easy to make sort of unsourced claims on Instagram, like these visual
00:16:00.920 post like the infamous one that children were 66,667 times more likely to be kidnapped by
00:16:09.160 traffickers than to get COVID which is like completely absurd but like it was one of those
00:16:14.820 image memes and it like looked it had like the Instagram aesthetic where it was like pink
00:16:19.340 lettering on like a cute background and it got shared to infinity over the summer and it's just
00:16:25.480 completely nuts and nobody ever even proposed a source for it but it's just an easy thing to
00:16:31.020 share and be like i'm helping kids bloop yeah and a lot of the the q proofs and memes are very ugly
00:16:37.240 looking like they're the pepe the frog stuff or or they're you know these are red boxes and lines
00:16:43.520 leading from one thing to another and like you know some big block letter word coincidence
00:16:48.880 it's not easy to share that in a way that will be meaningful for other people but if it's
00:16:54.180 you know, sort of light blue cursive lettering on a nice frosty pink background about like,
00:17:00.520 what are they doing to our children? Just curious. You know, people are people are going to share
00:17:05.540 that like gangbusters because it looks nice. And it's not really doing anything other than just
00:17:10.360 like asking a question that most people ask themselves at some point, like, oh, our children
00:17:14.440 going to be OK during all of this. Right. Especially Facebook groups. You have these
00:17:19.680 kind of private communities where there isn't a lot of pushback, kind of by definition.
00:17:23.360 it is really easy to feel in those groups like it's it's a place for sort of inquiry and debate
00:17:30.600 and it's easy to forget that those are walled gardens right and that the only people in there
00:17:35.020 are like they're already all anti-vaxxers in there you will never be challenged on anything
00:17:39.720 that you believe yeah it's just an intensification engine of whatever your existing beliefs are but
00:17:44.720 it looks like you're having debates with people yeah it looks like a discussion but what it really
00:17:49.460 is a bunch of people just nodding their heads. Yeah, exactly. And I've interviewed various
00:17:54.080 people in various stages of like Q hypnosis over the years. And one of the big things that I found
00:18:00.740 anyway is there's this thing of like, why can't I ask the question? Right. Like, it seems like
00:18:05.720 that's an entry point for a lot of people, too, that you see people saying like the vaccines,
00:18:11.240 like after people got the vaccines, half of them died. Why aren't I able to ask this question?
00:18:16.360 And it's like, well, because that's not true.
00:18:17.780 Like, that's a fake fact that you made up.
00:18:20.060 And the reason you're not allowed to ask that question is because it's fake.
00:18:22.620 But then it becomes like, I just I'm I'm against censorship.
00:18:25.580 I'm for free speech.
00:18:27.140 Well, it's also very linked to anti-vax logic, right?
00:18:30.680 Like, I'm not against vaccinations.
00:18:32.800 I just think that parents should be able to choose for their own children.
00:18:36.220 Right.
00:18:36.900 Exactly.
00:18:37.280 Which has become sort of this like often feels incredibly transparent, bad faith argument.
00:18:42.740 right and sort of arguing tactic that shows up in both places for sure yeah yeah and it's it
00:18:48.560 really feeds into the persecution complex that a lot of these people have and the the grievances
00:18:53.900 that have become so much a part of the right-wing culture war you know this idea that if if i'm not
00:19:01.040 allowed to share my truth i'm being censored personally like right big companies have it
00:19:06.300 out for me they want to destroy me because i'm a threat and q is great about doing that it's about
00:19:12.260 making people feel like they are a threat to the deep state and that this little this little
00:19:18.460 movement that the media writes off as oh it's just a it's just a role-playing game it's just
00:19:23.180 some kooky internet stuff oh but they keep shutting us down why you know why is that yeah
00:19:27.920 how much how much cuedness was there in the january 5th insurrection there were there were a lot of
00:19:33.960 cute people there but i think even more than that the vast majority of people there probably bought
00:19:39.260 into Q's mythology without actually knowing it. You know, the idea that the election was going to
00:19:44.640 be stolen, the idea that Joe Biden was this decrepit husk of a puppet candidate and that 0.51
00:19:51.320 the only way he could win was if the election was fraudulent. That was a huge part of QAnon.
00:19:57.780 Also, we had the Q shaman guy, the guy, the shirtless dude with the beaver hat,
00:20:02.320 who then gets put in jail and he demands an organic diet.
00:20:06.520 And you had a lot of the a lot of Q promoters are talking about how that guy doesn't represent us like I'm like I've seen him at Black Lives Matter protests. 0.73
00:20:15.040 He's a false flag. He's thrown out there to make us look like we're crazy. 0.58
00:20:19.580 He's a fake. We decide who the real ones are.
00:20:22.260 A real Q believer wouldn't be violent because Q is a nonviolent movement. 0.97
00:20:26.300 I mean, it's just it's just it's logical fallacy taken to the point of delusion.
00:20:30.580 It's also funny, the idea that like this guy's making QAnon look bad. 0.93
00:20:33.580 You know, we're talking about like Hillary Clinton, like ripping the faces off of kids and sucking up their adrenochrome.
00:20:39.980 But like this guy, you know, he's really getting. 0.89
00:20:42.320 Yeah, we draw the line at shirtlessness.
00:20:47.180 But what do you make of the guys like organic miss?
00:20:50.460 Like, what do you see is like the intersection there?
00:20:52.760 You know, it's totally enmeshed with that idea of we're being lied to big business, big agriculture, big pharma. 0.92
00:21:00.580 They're all liars.
00:21:01.560 They're all part of this conspiracy.
00:21:03.580 And you get a lot of that idea of like supplements and yoga in QAnon and like keeping your body healthy and staying away from those deep state additives and toxins.
00:21:14.300 So it's all enmeshed with each other.
00:21:16.180 Like when people were talking about the guy's organic diet, you know, people were like, what?
00:21:19.680 He doesn't live on, you know, beer and onion rings.
00:21:22.040 I'm like, that's not what these people are. 1.00
00:21:24.240 These Q believers are much more complicated than people want to believe they are. 1.00
00:21:28.840 And there's a lot of this sort of like purity, like health stuff in the actual sort of Q
00:21:33.580 text.
00:21:34.140 You know, there's clearly some distrust of big pharma.
00:21:37.460 There's sort of some tiptoeing into the dead doctors conspiracy theory.
00:21:42.760 And I don't know if you guys are familiar with that one.
00:21:44.980 No, not at all.
00:21:45.880 That started going around actually quite a while ago.
00:21:48.020 This was maybe 13 or 14 that the pharmaceutical industry was killing holistic doctors and
00:21:55.100 chiropractors and renegade autism researchers.
00:21:58.840 And it was like a chiropractor who died of cancer and like a dentist who died at age
00:22:05.740 85.
00:22:06.680 Right.
00:22:07.020 This is all tied together with QAnon because it's all this idea that, you know, there's
00:22:11.400 a powerful entity that will kill anybody who gets in their way and only research can stop
00:22:16.880 them.
00:22:17.080 And Q and wellness fit together perfectly there.
00:22:20.040 Do you find the same tactics, Mike, between wellness scammers, like selling people fake
00:22:24.880 supplements and QAnon people?
00:22:27.620 Like, are they using the same, I guess, rhetorical tactics to suck people in?
00:22:32.200 Yeah, they really do.
00:22:32.960 They use the same basic marketing tactics of they don't want you to know about this.
00:22:37.300 And a lot of it is about is about hope, is about this idea that if you do these things
00:22:43.040 and if you read these people, your life will be better than the deep state wants for you.
00:22:48.800 You know, the deep state wants you enslaved. 1.00
00:22:51.460 Big pharma wants you sick and stupid. 1.00
00:22:54.200 And we we care about you. 1.00
00:22:56.020 We're going to get you these supplements.
00:22:57.560 We're going to get you this information.
00:22:59.820 You're going to be armed with the truth and then you can shape your life to be better and to fight back.
00:23:04.760 So, so much of it is about aspiration.
00:23:07.760 How is QAnon doing that?
00:23:09.000 It's like we're going to take care of you or something?
00:23:11.080 Like what's the promise at the end of the rainbow for QAnon?
00:23:13.760 The promise at the end of the rainbow for QAnon is not so much a financial one or a health one.
00:23:18.920 It's that the bad people will be gotten rid of. 0.93
00:23:22.380 This ancient war that's been going on for thousands of years between the white hats and the good people and the godly people who are over here and then the Babylonian cult that's over here that's been controlling you since the Egyptian pyramids.
00:23:38.880 That war is finally going to be won and it's going to bring peace and freedom and you're going to be able to live your life the way you want to.
00:23:46.720 So it's a less tangible motivation, but it's also almost a more powerful one because it promises the people who have hurt you and kept you down will be paraded in front of you, broken and in chains, and they'll be sent to the gallows.
00:24:03.340 And that's very powerful in that community.
00:24:05.560 I'm curious about within sort of the wellness pipeline, are there any sort of like known factors that put people at risk?
00:24:12.920 Yeah, there's a couple of things that put you at risk for falling down the Q rabbit hole.
00:24:18.360 You know, one is sort of extant susceptibility to conspiracy theories.
00:24:22.640 And so many of these people who fall into Q were already believers in something else.
00:24:27.580 They were already believers in wellness conspiracies, or they were believers in they were 9-11 truthers, or they were Barack Obama birth certificate truthers, or Trump spy gate truthers. 0.66
00:24:40.120 So the vast majority of the time, a person who finds themselves enmeshed in QAnon didn't spend their whole life watching CNN and reading The New York Times and voting Democratic and then just one day waking up and deciding that Trump's military intelligence team was leaking clues to Hillary Clinton being sent to the gallows.
00:25:00.100 So a person who falls into QAnon almost always already believed something else that was unevidenced and QAnon is just the next natural step for them.
00:25:10.120 That indicates that some of this wellness stuff is kind of a gateway drug.
00:25:14.760 Totally.
00:25:15.180 I mean, we always say on the show that we don't want to take anything away from anybody.
00:25:18.180 And we try to show a lot of grace to people who are like, they're doing a cleanse.
00:25:21.940 And like, I have no interest in lecturing somebody about whether or not they do that.
00:25:25.860 But then you could say it sort of at the societal level, the more of these kind of wellness conspiracy-ish products are out there,
00:25:35.260 the more susceptibility that's giving people to falling into other forms of conspiracy thinking.
00:25:40.980 It seems like the sort of the cleanse to anti-vax to QAnon pipeline seems like each one of those is
00:25:47.760 like a slight escalation of the previous one. Yeah. And that's exactly what it is. You're
00:25:51.700 escalating. You're probably not going to get somebody who, you know, has a really robust
00:25:56.360 yoga practice and, you know, does their stupid cleanse every couple of months. They're not 0.99
00:26:01.100 necessarily going to fall into, well, the deep state stole the election from Donald Trump.
00:26:05.940 But where they might go is, oh, I don't really trust the science on the vaccine.
00:26:10.060 It's very hard to interdict in that pipeline if that person is not doing anything that's
00:26:14.880 hurting somebody else or hurting themselves.
00:26:16.980 It's sort of like 10 percent of them are going to go to the next step.
00:26:20.200 And the more people you have believing these early steps, the more you're just going to 1.00
00:26:24.960 have people that end up at the sort of final place, which is like the Jews did it, which 0.96
00:26:29.760 which seems to be where all of these things lead. Yeah. 0.98
00:26:32.500 I'm also curious about if there are if you've come across any stories sort of about folks
00:26:38.200 leaving QAnon. What does that look like for folks? How often is it happening? Do we have
00:26:44.160 any sense of that? Like just anything about folks sort of breaking away? Because I think
00:26:47.800 part of what feels so troubling and intense about QAnon, at least to me,
00:26:52.360 is how sort of intractable and impermeable it is to sort of think about how to dismantle
00:26:58.460 all of this, right? Yeah. There are people who have gotten out of QAnon. You know, I talked to
00:27:03.180 some, I talked to some for, for the book, but it's a very difficult process to get somebody out of
00:27:09.380 QAnon because they ultimately have to want to stop believing it. They have to see something in it that
00:27:16.200 feels false or that seems like a contradiction or a mistake. They have to see some kind of
00:27:22.580 defect in it. And I liken it to a tapestry. And if QAnon is a big tapestry and somebody sees that
00:27:29.500 there's one thread that's dangling, you know, whether that's something that Q got wrong or
00:27:34.300 Joe Biden making sure they got a stimulus check or whatever, something that interdicts that
00:27:39.280 belief, that dangling thread suddenly becomes more inviting to pull on. And when you pull on
00:27:43.820 that thread, the whole thing unravels and you eventually realize, oh, I've been had like this
00:27:48.880 was all fake. This was all for nothing. But the person who believes in it has to see the thread
00:27:54.240 and they have to want to pull on it. And for so many people, they just don't. They find ways to
00:27:59.820 justify and to reconcile the mistakes and the failed predictions and the errors that just gets
00:28:05.640 consumed into QAnon. So there are people who've gotten out, but there's very few. And there's
00:28:12.320 very few who are willing to talk about it because they feel embarrassed and they're ashamed and
00:28:17.860 They don't they haven't gotten their life together post QAnon.
00:28:21.040 You know, it's not something like Scientology, where you have a very robust group of people
00:28:27.040 who've gotten out of it, who are very vocal and very fearless about talking about what
00:28:31.420 it did to them, what they got out of it and why they eventually left it.
00:28:34.680 You just don't have that with Q yet because it's all so new.
00:28:37.880 For the people that you interviewed, Mike, what were some of the little threads that
00:28:41.280 they started pulling on?
00:28:42.420 Like what started the process?
00:28:43.700 There is one woman I talked to who is still a very active conspiracy theory believer.
00:28:49.720 She's still a very active Trumpist, but she was very, very big into QAnon.
00:28:53.820 And what shattered QAnon for her was when QAnon started quoting Bible verses.
00:29:00.020 And she said something like, a real military intelligence leaker would never quote the Bible.
00:29:05.180 That completely shattered it for me.
00:29:07.180 Jatarth, the Australian guy who's done a ton of media in the last few months or so,
00:29:12.240 I'm actually really proud of this. One of the things that helped get him out was reading
00:29:16.320 something that I wrote about the sealed indictments aspect of QAnon. And that was all
00:29:21.420 based on just a misreading of public records. And that's not how the justice system works.
00:29:26.300 But the thing that got him originally, that first polling on the dangling thread,
00:29:30.980 was when somebody asked Trump through Q to use the phrase tip top. And then three months later,
00:29:38.700 trump used the phrase tippy top in uh talking at the white house easter egg roll and people are
00:29:44.680 like oh he did it he's listening to us it's q proof and like well no he did it three months later
00:29:49.380 but also he's used that phrase many other times and so for jatarth it was looking up the the
00:29:57.380 phrase tippy top because you're like oh it's such a unique phrase and only trump would use that if
00:30:01.080 q was telling him to and jatarth realized that trump had used it many other times there was a
00:30:05.720 a speech in the run-up to the election where Trump was talking about how we're going to make
00:30:09.600 the nuclear arsenal tippy-top. And for Gitarth, it was just that one instance of, wait a minute,
00:30:14.780 Q didn't catch anything here. Trump just uses this phrase. And it was only a matter of time
00:30:19.320 before he was going to do it again. And like, if Q was wrong about that, what else was he wrong
00:30:23.180 about? Yeah, I guess it's the replacement of the community too. There aren't as many, I suppose,
00:30:29.220 Facebook groups for sort of XQ or Q questioning or the tractor beam that pulls you into Q is much
00:30:37.380 stronger than the tractor beam that pulls you out. Totally. It's, you know, there are any number of
00:30:41.260 ways to get into Q. And once you're in Q, there's any number of people who will comfort you and play
00:30:47.260 up the delusions that you're having because they're probably having the same ones. But for
00:30:51.200 getting out, it's a very, very lonely process because most of these people just pushed away
00:30:55.560 their support systems. So one of the things I talk about in the book is, you know, what to do
00:31:00.580 and what not to do to help a person that you care about who is a Q believer. So what are the do's 0.99
00:31:06.540 and don'ts, Mike? Sure. Well, the basic do's are to maintain communication with that person. You
00:31:12.660 know, it can be very tempting to just cut that person out of your life entirely. But what you
00:31:17.120 want to do is to maintain a line of communication, something that's very apolitical, something that
00:31:22.180 has nothing to do with QAnon. Every so often, just check in, just see how they're doing. What do
00:31:27.000 they need? If it's somebody who is in your immediate pod or your immediate family, like,
00:31:31.160 hey, I'm going to the grocery store. Do you need anything? Don't talk about QAnon. Keep things very
00:31:36.920 general about shared experiences, shared likes and dislikes, the kinds of things that make you
00:31:43.100 a very safe conversation companion. Don't try to debate them out of it. Don't try to debunk them
00:31:49.060 or fact check them or insult them out of it, because all of those things are things that
00:31:53.060 are just going to drive somebody deeper into the belief and feed that persecution complex.
00:31:58.160 But if you can, you can kind of cast yourself as a safe person and as a lifeline. And if that
00:32:04.320 person does start questioning QAnon, they're going to look at you as a person who they can
00:32:08.340 talk to about this, because you've already proven that you are a person who is not going to judge
00:32:13.640 or mock them. And that's all going to be a very individual journey. But it is very personal and
00:32:19.880 it's very one-on-one. There's no real large scale way to de-radicalize people out of conspiracy
00:32:26.900 theories because each person gets something different out of it. Yeah. It's basically just
00:32:32.140 extremely labor intensive to do this and not guaranteed to succeed. No, it's very labor
00:32:38.260 intensive, very difficult, very frustrating, and you may not want to do it. Yeah. It is not a
00:32:44.140 requirement that you try to de-radicalize your QAnon loved one. If you feel unsafe with that 0.60
00:32:50.240 person or talking to that person, you have every right to cut them out of your life. Yeah. And also
00:32:54.360 I've interviewed experts, like misinformation experts about this as well. And it seems like
00:32:59.640 the real cure for this, like the only scalable solution to this is prevention. Yeah. And that
00:33:05.160 raises some like genuine concerns about sort of what should be allowed to be posted on these
00:33:11.220 platforms, what kind of regulation of these platforms should we have. But it's like the
00:33:16.040 options are take some of those really difficult decisions or continue to have a country where
00:33:21.380 like 30 percent of the population just have completely deranged beliefs. Right. Like either
00:33:25.760 option is bad. Yeah. Right. If 50 or 70 million or whatever people genuinely and wholeheartedly
00:33:33.300 believe that joe biden is a fraudulent president yeah that's a problem that's a problem and that's
00:33:38.480 and that's a problem that that really demands very serious solutions right and and at the same time
00:33:45.100 serious solutions can be very troubling that's the thing it's like there's this idea that sort
00:33:48.980 of all conspiracy theories are the same or like there's the moon landing was faked and there's
00:33:52.260 bigfoot and then there's q anon right it seems like q anon is genuinely much more pernicious
00:33:57.420 because there's violence at the end of it yeah if 20 of the population believes bigfoot was real
00:34:01.620 that doesn't imply any, like, action that you have to take, right?
00:34:05.300 Like, you're not storming the Capitol.
00:34:07.000 Yeah, nobody gets killed over thinking the moon landing was faked.
00:34:11.560 I mean, you might get punched out by Buzz Aldrin.
00:34:14.140 Right.
00:34:15.380 But that's about it.
00:34:16.640 And that's where, you know, with a lot of people, people are like,
00:34:20.060 oh, it shouldn't be legal to believe in conspiracy theories.
00:34:22.960 Like, everybody needs help.
00:34:24.220 I think for the vast majority of people who believe in these unevidenced notions,
00:34:28.060 it's probably fine.
00:34:29.200 You know, you can you can live a very productive and happy and healthy life and still believe that JFK was murdered by a conspiracy.
00:34:38.040 Yeah. That doesn't necessarily turn you into a violent anti-government militia member.
00:34:43.700 But with QAnon, it's a heck of a lot more likely because it's an it's an intrinsically violent conspiracy. 0.92
00:34:49.840 And it has a body count. Right. There have been people who've been killed by QAnon supporters.
00:34:54.760 Oh, yeah, 100%. I mean, you know, murders, vandalism, arson, kidnappings. Nobody should
00:35:01.100 have been surprised by the violence committed by Q believers around the Capitol insurrection. 1.00
00:35:07.100 Like, they'd been doing it for two years already. 1.00
00:35:09.720 And in a lot of ways, it has its roots, right? The sort of rhetoric of the deep state and
00:35:14.900 the New World Order, all of that stuff has its roots in the Oklahoma City bombings and to
00:35:22.120 ruby ridge and to sort of bigger face-offs that uh my fellow older millennials may recall from
00:35:29.160 our childhoods right that like this is all also sort of an extension of some like original recipe
00:35:34.920 uh anti-semitic conspiracy theories right yeah yeah q anon is i mean this idea of the deep state
00:35:41.120 or the cabal it's the new world order it's the illuminati it's the trilateral commission it's
00:35:46.820 bohemian grove it's the council on foreign relations it's the freemasons it's the catholics
00:35:52.540 it's the jews i mean there's there's always been this need for a powerful organized group of 0.91
00:35:59.140 shadowy string pullers and q is just the next version of that but q is really the first one 0.77
00:36:05.700 that allows you to take the fight back to them yeah the bigfoot people don't do that no no they
00:36:11.720 don't. I mean, even a lot of wellness people don't do that. I mean, the other thing that is
00:36:17.260 sort of coming to mind as we're talking about all of this is I'm just thinking about there is no
00:36:22.360 part of my worldview that really aligns in a meaningful way with any part of the worldviews
00:36:28.520 of many of the folks who are involved in QAnon, right? And at the same time, I am also thinking
00:36:33.140 about how profoundly lonely a lot of this must be, right? To sort of lose family relationships,
00:36:40.460 to lose friendships, in some cases to lose jobs, or to go to prison, or what have you, right?
00:36:47.440 That all of this seems profoundly lonely and isolating. And if the community that you have
00:36:54.680 is this sort of like internet community of other people who believe the same things that you do,
00:37:00.660 it's really easy to see just on a personal emotional level, how folks continue to sort of
00:37:06.480 gravitate away from folks who are rejecting them or laughing at them or poking holes in this.
00:37:13.100 You can see how our collective responses for folks who are not part of QAnon to QAnon
00:37:20.020 also sort of accelerate some of those dynamics.
00:37:23.760 Yeah, you have a real sense of isolation and of loneliness and of not taking pleasure in the
00:37:31.340 things that used to give you pleasure because all you see in them now is the evil. There was
00:37:36.220 one thread of this a couple years ago on vote the now defunct absolutely horrible reddit knockoff
00:37:43.220 of people just like talking about stuff they couldn't enjoy anymore and i don't know why
00:37:46.800 it's this one sticks in my mind but it's this guy talking about how he's like i used to love the band
00:37:53.280 tool but now i i can't imagine they're not cia funded so i can't listen to them anymore i'm like
00:38:00.040 first of all of all the bands i know tool's good leave too out of this you guys yeah like no tool
00:38:06.820 like tool should be on your side here yeah theoretically but the absolute specificity
00:38:12.820 of his misery really stuck with me i feel like sort of the further that i get into q anon world
00:38:19.140 the more i'm just sort of overcome by this deep sense of sadness right from the folks who are
00:38:25.320 there from sort of the cultural impacts of it, all of that kind of stuff. And also earlier with
00:38:30.520 Mike, when you were talking about people don't take pleasure in the things that they used to
00:38:33.600 take pleasure in and they feel really sad. I was like, are we ticking down the list of
00:38:39.580 DSM symptoms of major depressive disorder? Because it really, I mean, it's really sort of striking.
00:38:46.700 Well, I also think, okay, maybe we should end on like a slightly more optimistic note of what would
00:38:52.060 all of us recommend for, I guess, like wellness spaces or alternative medicine spaces, right?
00:38:58.660 Because you can imagine those communities being really positive for people, or you can imagine 1.00
00:39:03.260 those communities sinking down this like nihilistic abyss with the QAnon people. Like, 1.00
00:39:09.840 how can we make sure that the wellness stuff we talk about isn't becoming a gateway drug to this?
00:39:15.360 Yeah, that's a really good question because it's so individualized how everybody takes that
00:39:21.180 journey through the pipeline from just some sort of gentle conspiracy theorizing and wanting answers
00:39:28.100 to storming the Capitol. But I think what we have to do is kind of monitor the people in our lives
00:39:33.940 and just make sure they're okay. Make sure they're not falling down these rabbit holes. And if you do
00:39:40.020 start to get those signs, like step in early and let them know, hey, I still care about you. Hey,
00:39:45.760 let's talk about this together. And if you step in really early and let that person know they're
00:39:50.440 not alone. They're not being persecuted. I think if we have a way of stopping this before it gets
00:39:56.580 really bad, that's probably it. I would also say for folks who are in any kind of leadership role
00:40:03.760 or active role in wellness spaces, particularly online wellness spaces, I would say really
00:40:10.440 stripping out that what doctors don't want you to know kind of logic. Just getting that rhetoric
00:40:17.640 out of your life feels really important. The other thing that I would say is, and this is like a big
00:40:22.400 ask of folks, and I recognize that, is like actually fact-checking stuff that you share.
00:40:28.620 If you are hearing from folks about oil pulling or anti-vax stuff or like whatever sort of the
00:40:36.040 realm is, like citing things that look like facts without knowing whether or not they're facts
00:40:42.840 is a passive but still very harmful thing to do it's also difficult for sort of people like us
00:40:50.420 who talk about like institutionalized fat phobia or institutionalized racism or something to say
00:40:55.680 that like this entire system is against you in some cases that's true yeah yeah there really
00:41:00.940 are blind spots in institutions right like and that's what a lot of good journalism does is
00:41:05.980 point out those blind spots but i think it's really important to realize the limits of that
00:41:11.260 sort of us versus them kind of framing of every single issue and making it seem like there's some
00:41:17.320 sort of deliberate conspiracy of you know doctors don't want you to know this and you know there's
00:41:23.040 some meeting once a year in switzerland it's like no the knowledge is being suppressed yeah yeah i
00:41:29.460 think like the deliberateness is usually when i start to get nervous because oftentimes it's like
00:41:35.600 it's it's an institutional blind spot because like schools don't teach it and it's not part of sort
00:41:40.080 of residency training requirements and so people who are doctors have these kind of institutional
00:41:44.500 blind spots but they're not necessarily like sitting around like let's destroy fat people's
00:41:49.080 health right it's much more inchoate than that and that that's what we know about real conspiracies
00:41:54.520 as opposed to conspiracy theories is that it's just a lot of like cluelessness and not thinking
00:41:59.460 things through and not people who are members of those groups being in the room it's not like
00:42:03.900 people twiddling their mustaches no it's it's so much more of just people not being good at their
00:42:09.080 jobs, just not thinking things through or not taking that extra step and understanding not just
00:42:14.760 that these things are happening, but why these things are happening. And I think you have to
00:42:18.980 understand that it does provide something to people and it does fill holes and it does answer
00:42:23.740 questions. And if you were able to get your head around that as nuts as it seems that somebody
00:42:28.800 could find meaning in this insanity, you're going to go a lot farther to being able to combat it.
00:42:34.540 This feels like a good sort of clarion call for all of us to get better at separating out responses that are personally satisfying or cathartic to us versus responses that will actually help reach someone and help them sort of escape the path that they're on, right?
00:42:51.980 And in some cases, your goals might be to pull a family member back from QAnon. 0.98
00:42:58.200 In some cases, your goals might be to protect your own boundaries and your own sense of 0.91
00:43:03.080 self and whatever, and go, I can't actually do it anymore.
00:43:06.620 I'm so sorry.
00:43:07.840 Both of those are valid decisions, but just getting better at, okay, here's the situation
00:43:12.840 I'm in.
00:43:13.680 Do I want to take care of me?
00:43:15.460 Do I want to take care of this person?
00:43:16.960 What's the balance that I'm going to strike in doing those things?
00:43:20.080 And what are my strategies for doing it?
00:43:22.360 It seemed like that could help all of us quite a bit, not only in reaching more folks,
00:43:27.800 but also in terms of, like, protecting our own peace of mind, right? 0.99
00:43:31.580 Aubrey just wants to keep tweeting abuse at people who are on cleanses. 1.00
00:43:34.900 Listen! 1.00
00:43:35.520 That's the main thing.
00:43:36.060 If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times.
00:43:38.740 Your celery juice does nothing.
00:43:40.400 That's not true.
00:43:42.540 She's just searching for anybody tweeting about celery juice.
00:43:45.840 Be like, first of all, Susan.
00:43:47.680 I am itching for a fight, man.
00:43:52.560 Thanks so much for doing this, Mike.
00:43:53.980 Oh, I'm happy to.
00:43:55.080 This is great.
00:43:55.700 I, you know, I can babble about this stuff all day and to be able to babble to two people
00:44:00.600 who have some understanding of what we're up against with this is just terrific.
00:44:04.220 Where can people find your work and your book, Mike?
00:44:06.660 Sure.
00:44:07.080 The book is available for pre-order anywhere you pre-order books.
00:44:11.240 You can find me on Twitter at RothschildMD.
00:44:15.700 So it's just my last name, MD.
00:44:18.280 Dr. Rothschild.
00:44:19.300 Not a doctor.
00:44:20.180 Please do not consult me for medical advice.
00:44:22.580 I have a photo of a rash I'm going to send you.
00:44:25.260 No, Mike.
00:44:26.120 I'll do some oil pulling and then it'll just go away.
00:44:55.260 Thank you.
