00:00:00.380 Happy Mabon! And welcome back to another episode and another season of the Missing Witches podcast.
00:00:09.000 My name is Amy, and today I invite you to lie on the floor and do witchcraft. 0.51
00:00:16.140 Because today's guests are here to wrap you in a blanket of anti-ableism and disability justice.
00:00:24.080 Are you disabled? Are you divergent? You're still a fucking witch.
00:00:30.860 Ivy Zeller, who also publishes under the name Candy Zeller, is a queer and disabled writer 1.00
00:00:36.620 and editor, author of Disabled Witchcraft and the upcoming accompanying Oracle Deck, 0.99
00:00:42.740 and Nature Names for Enbies and Other Queer Folks. She's a secular-ish witch who loves 0.99
00:00:49.680 weaving whimsy and intention into everyday life, and musing about these themes at
00:00:54.880 allthethreads.substack.com. Jenny C. Bell is the author of Divergent Witchcraft,
00:01:04.140 an Inclusive Approach to Making Magic, and the founder of Our Coven Online Community,
00:01:10.580 the host of the Cozy Coven Chats podcast, and the sometimes co-host of Granddaughter Crow's
00:01:17.540 podcast, Belief, Being, and Beyond. Jasmine Stouffer is a disabled settler, educator, activist,
00:01:25.280 and community member based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A PhD candidate at St. Francis Xavier
00:01:31.800 University, their research explores anti-ableist pedagogy, disability justice, and teacher
00:01:38.540 education. Jasmine is a founder of the Disabled Educators Curriculum Collective and is a member
00:01:45.040 of several disability activist groups in her community. Jasmine also describes
00:01:49.960 themselves as an anti-ableist agent of chaos. If you want to support the 1.00
00:01:55.760 Missing Witches project, join the coven! Find everything you need to know at
00:02:01.320 missingwitches.com. You aren't being a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:02:06.160 Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! You must be a witch. 1.00
00:02:11.020 it's the autumn equinox which means we are tumbling into the dark half of the 0.82
00:02:17.040 year it's so important that we be kind to ourselves go easy on ourselves as we
00:02:26.560 get into that time where the Sun sets earlier and earlier and earlier to form
00:02:37.600 communities, to build loving relationships with other people, but also
00:02:42.760 with ourselves. I'm disabled. I have a chronic illness that I've had all my
00:02:50.920 life, but that wasn't diagnosed until I was in my early 30s. It is physically
00:02:57.520 demanding. It has affected my mental health, anxiety, depression, neurodivergence,
00:03:06.520 ADHD, I've got it all. And sometimes under lay stage capitalism, that makes me feel like
00:03:14.280 I am not enough. So I have gathered today a gaggle of witches to help remind us that
00:03:25.640 you are more than enough. And in fact, I think there might be some pieces in the work of
00:03:32.800 my guests today that might help you realize that you are more enough than you might even
00:03:42.240 consider.
00:03:44.360 I want to welcome Jasmine and Jenny and Ivy today to talk about our spoons or our lack
00:03:54.880 of spoons, how our magic can be accessible, and how, maybe even, disability itself is
00:04:05.160 a form of witchcraft. Now, that we will really dig into. That's a quote from one of Ivy's
00:04:13.400 books. We will get into it, but let's start with Ivy. What do you want our coven to know
00:04:19.280 about you that they didn't already hear in the introduction? How are you? What are you
00:04:24.160 doing who are you today hi yeah i'm ivy and i'm the author of disabled witchcraft
00:04:31.900 and when i'm not writing i love doing spooky diy projects please expand
00:04:40.340 so my current diy project is a haunted dollhouse it's a small one
00:04:45.740 and that can fit on a shelf and that is my current hyper fixation
00:04:50.540 well now that's my soon-to-be hyper fixation i want to build a haunted dollhouse and i probably
00:04:59.740 honestly this winter i probably will thank you ivy thank you for being here jenny who are you today
00:05:07.860 how are you today what's up what's up hey i am jenny and i am the author of divergent witchcraft
00:05:16.380 which is what got me here today, which is awesome. Something people may not know about me is that
00:05:23.220 I also deal with chronic pain and have since I was a teenager. And so that's not something I
00:05:30.520 usually talk about. But, you know, it's just, I don't know, sometimes I feel like it's just part
00:05:36.980 of the journey of discovering ourself. Some part of that is like through chronic pain. And I don't
00:05:43.480 know why that is, but I see such a correlation of witches who deal with chronic health and chronic
00:05:49.080 pain. So, so I've noticed a correlation between witches and chronic pain or chronic illness.
00:05:55.980 And I feel like sometimes we find our spirit and our spirituality through that journey.
00:06:02.020 Yes, I think so. The hard road that reveals itself into the light. Jasmine, how are you?
00:06:10.860 who are you what are you doing who knows who knows at any given time um
00:06:18.680 yeah i'm uh so i i i'm here right that's important
00:06:27.180 as our body minds uh shift and grow i think you know being here is important being in community
00:06:36.860 is important so i'm happy to be here um jenny's book is on my to be read list as well um i i did
00:06:45.880 read ivy's ivy's book with a group of other witches who are members of this lovely coven
00:06:51.200 um so thank you both for creating literature that i think is well overdue in the witchcraft
00:06:59.380 community this conversation is well past its due date i think in the witchcraft community
00:07:06.460 um i am disabled in different ways that i i won't get into because i'm learning how not to try to
00:07:15.900 defend my disability um so i am disabled and that's what i'll i'll stay with for now
00:07:23.820 um but i i also want to bring in the disabled ancestors like neil marcus and alice wong who
00:07:32.040 were very very clear when they said that the magic of disability is real and disabled bodies are
00:07:39.360 oracles and I'm very pleased to see how Missing Witches has very clearly stated 0.99
00:07:50.020 how serious we are about creating an anti-ableist space and coven because recently I've seen so
00:07:59.640 many people join and sometimes the first or second sentence they write about is that they are
00:08:05.660 disabled or they are neurodivergent or they have this and this and this um and every time a new
00:08:12.180 member joins it makes and and and talks about how they are disabled uh it makes my heart sing because
00:08:21.020 i i've known that there are disabled which is out there so it's nice to know we're not missing
00:08:28.180 anymore uh yeah so i'm i'm happy to be here and uh look forward to a really cool discussion
00:08:37.700 yeah thank you jasmine i think because missing which is so largely an online coven
00:08:44.660 i i mean i know for me when i have to go somewhere half my energy is just getting from point a to
00:08:52.260 point B and then whatever I have left is for the actual event but when I get to
00:08:58.800 have these conversations from my house from my comfy chair without leaving when
00:09:05.780 I get to host coven meetings from my comfy chair I have so much more energy
00:09:10.200 to give to the magic so shout out to the missing witches coven we love you come
00:09:16.980 join us as you are who you are where you are whatever your body mind tells you
00:09:23.380 and also another shout out to Jasmine and other people reason I don't know
00:09:30.580 everything so we count on you all to say hey can you turn on the captions stuff
00:09:37.780 like that that is so easy that we're like oh of course I can do that so we're
00:09:43.500 all working together, as it were, to make the space as accessible as possible. And it counts
00:09:50.420 on people like Jenny and people like Ivy and people like Jasmine who are putting this work
00:09:56.340 out into the world and saying, we are here and we deserve to access this space in whatever way we
00:10:04.700 can. I want to start though, Jenny, often at our Missing Witches cabin meetings, we open with
00:10:13.100 A Calling of the Corners, as it were. And I found something in your book that sort of fits that
00:10:19.700 description. So I'm hoping that you'll read it for us by way of opening this circle. Yeah,
00:10:26.400 definitely. This is from chapter five. And an interesting fact, I actually wrote this when I
00:10:30.800 was a teenager. And it's been my prayer I've used ever since then. So I call to air, both restless
00:10:37.640 and sweet on your breasts my wings will beat to the east elemental air does sit please make my
00:10:43.160 circle combine and fit i call to fire your heat and light in your heart life burns strong and
00:10:49.880 bright to the south elemental fire does sit please make my circle combine and fit i call to water
00:10:57.320 stream and sea within your great heart life came to be to the west elemental water does sit please
00:11:03.720 make my circle combine and fit i call to earth generous and deep in you we sow that which we
00:11:11.400 may reap to the north elemental earth does sit please make my circle complete and fit
00:11:18.280 in this circle may all elements happily meet my protective circle is now complete
00:11:26.920 and we need that so much we need a circle of protection but also one that fits so many of
00:11:32.440 of us are trying to cram ourselves into, again, that late-stage capitalism box, and
00:11:37.480 the corners are tight and they don't fit. But for us, as witches, all of us as
00:11:44.080 witches, what we're trying to do, hopefully, is to build a new paradigm, to
00:11:49.660 build a new society, to build a circle that fits. Thank you, Jenny. It was so
00:11:56.800 interesting to me, Ivy, Jenny, both of your books begin with the first sentence
00:12:03.820 being, witchcraft is blank. So Ivy, I will turn to you. The opening line of your book,
00:12:15.180 disabled witchcraft is witchcraft is for everyone did i get it right you got it right yep yeah 0.98
00:12:28.160 because i'm like looking for it in my notes and i again you know i'm all over the place hey 0.98
00:12:33.260 i'm looking forward to my notes and oh there it is there it is witchcraft is for everyone
00:12:39.700 please expand yeah so when I started practicing I didn't find a lot of resources that aligned with
00:12:50.560 my disabilities and I was looking but so I felt I didn't feel witchy enough because I at the time
00:12:58.600 couldn't use scented candles because of severe allergies and and I just didn't have enough
00:13:05.100 spoons to keep track with all the holidays and all of that. And so when I say witchcraft is for
00:13:12.500 everyone, I say that it is an open path that should be accessible to all who desire it.
00:13:18.040 Say more.
00:13:20.220 Oh, yeah. And basically, when I talk about witchcraft, I also think disability is itself 0.51
00:13:28.740 a form of witchcraft because when we are disabled our bodies do not align with the demands of
00:13:37.720 capitalism and so we interrupt them because we can't meet the expectation and I think that itself
00:13:44.820 is a form of magic because we are transforming something and in that case we're transforming an
00:13:49.560 unjust and ableist system just by our very existence and so witchcraft is for everybody 0.89
00:13:54.680 because we all bring our own power to the craft and for disabled spoonies that we our power is 0.51
00:14:02.660 in our disability i love this inversion of disability as power as again new world building 0.80
00:14:10.900 thank you jenny the opening line of your book is witchcraft is empowering
00:14:17.260 yeah that's so perfect it like took off where ivy left off on that one um yeah witchcraft is
00:14:24.980 empowering so for me i um i'm you know older i'm in my 40s and so growing up in the 90s uh during 0.93
00:14:35.300 skinny skinny skinny culture and growing up in a catholic home and my mom um actually had me out
00:14:44.460 of wedlock which was not everybody was like shocker shocker and it was I was already different
00:14:51.920 from the beginning when like everyone was talking about Father's Day or this with fathers I was just
00:14:57.040 already like different and so I felt different in the church because it was so patriarchal and I
00:15:06.140 remember when I was a child I was very spiritual and I always wanted to be like praying and doing
00:15:10.960 things. And I said, I'm going to be a priest. And my grandparents were like, oh, no, you can't be
00:15:15.700 a priest because you're a girl. I was like, oh, okay. And then it continued on where I just start
00:15:22.600 kind of asking questions. By the age of 10, my beloved cat had died. And my CCD teacher at the
00:15:32.000 time, my teacher for Catholic school, she told me that I wouldn't see him in heaven because they
00:15:38.100 animals didn't have souls. And so at 10, I was like, well, I guess I'm not Catholic. And I just
00:15:42.640 kind of started this journey. And I found at the age of 13, I found witchcraft and I found it so 0.60
00:15:49.860 empowering. I was like, wait, it's okay for me to be a woman. It's okay for me to be different.
00:15:56.900 It's okay for me to be curvy. It's, you know, it was like all of these things where it was like,
00:16:01.340 that was lacking in the mainstream culture at that time. And I found solace in it. And so ever
00:16:07.560 since then i really do believe it's empowering for everybody everybody and it's can be such an
00:16:14.440 empowering path especially if you've always if you've ever been othered you know it's like i
00:16:18.920 embraced the other and i was like well i'm just gonna be really othered and i'm gonna be a witch
00:16:25.000 i can relate to that so much like i was feel like i was born just weird you know i was the
00:16:31.080 the school weirdo the class freak um and and people it my very tiny weirdnesses people would
00:16:41.160 be like oh she's so weird and i'd be like okay well if you're gonna call me weird then i'm gonna
00:16:47.160 show you weird if i've already been slapped with this label then i may as well go full tilt right
00:16:54.680 ivy um jenny mentioned a kind of religious trauma and there's so much about that in in your book
00:17:00.600 disabled witchcraft too can you talk a little bit about that relationship absolutely um so like
00:17:08.040 jenny i was also a very spiritual kid um i grew up in a home where um there's a long technical
00:17:16.580 term for it but basically i grew up in a cult wit that believed the end of the world was coming and
00:17:21.840 I was on a religious compound in the woods.
00:17:26.240 And basically, I, over time, figured out that who I was did not fit the expectations of
00:17:34.620 a very patriarchal, very apocalyptic group.
00:17:40.460 And witchcraft became, for me, this way to express myself in that deep sense of spirituality
00:17:49.800 in a way that allowed me to be who I was.
00:17:54.100 And I'm queer, I'm disabled, and I'm witchy.
00:18:00.520 You said, who I was did not fit expectations. 1.00
00:18:05.980 And I think that, like you said, this goes for the witch community, 0.99
00:18:10.060 the queer community, the disabled community.
00:18:12.320 If we can look at the expectations and see them as wrong,
00:18:16.600 the expectations are wrong.
00:18:18.500 We are not wrong. The expectations are the things that are wrong. Ivy, when I read that sentence, I believe disability is itself a form of witchcraft. I thought of Jasmine immediately. Jasmine, you wrote a piece for the Missing Witches zine called Witchcraft is an altar to neurodivergence.
00:18:42.500 so speak about that or speak about anything that comes to mind with the listening that we've been
00:18:47.840 doing just now careful you give someone with adhd the openness to talk
00:18:54.380 go off and off and off and off and off no so i for myself um i've always associated the witch
00:19:09.580 with the weirdo there's like the outsider weirdo um and and i don't have i don't share the religious
00:19:18.900 trauma because i'm fortunate to have parents who could see beyond their own and not choose that for
00:19:24.380 my sibling and myself so that was lucky but um the witch is is an outsider uh they have always 0.63
00:19:37.740 been an outsider and they are a disabled i would view the witch as a disabled archetype
00:19:46.860 so the witch belongs to the disability community i'll put that out there um particularly if we 0.62
00:19:54.500 if we abide by the social model of disability and and the fall you know the cultural model
00:20:00.700 the you know because the social model of disability states that there's a difference
00:20:06.680 between impairment and disablement so an impairment is a physical sensory or mental
00:20:13.500 difference or health condition and impairment is very real right but a disability to be disabled
00:20:20.300 by your impairment is the disadvantage it's the act of disadvantaging or restricting or causing
00:20:26.940 you know the cause when society fails to accommodate our differences when society has 0.75
00:20:34.420 chosen not to accommodate you because you are impaired that is when you are being disabled 0.68
00:20:39.640 and for me witchcraft my witchcraft is disabled by the sheer fact that I am a disabled person 0.82
00:20:49.840 and so my altar is an altar to neurodivergence and disablement it is an altar to queerness it
00:20:57.200 is an altar to the you know my femininity it is also an altar to it's whatever you build and
00:21:04.660 doesn't have to be i don't mean a physical altar but that the the act itself of calling yourself a 0.54
00:21:12.080 witch you are also disabled that is a disablement and you to understand that is also to understand
00:21:21.400 ableism and to understand that when we take on the moniker of witch we're also taking on not 0.95
00:21:29.240 just a witchcraft practice but a life practice um of practicing anti-ableism uh the tenants
00:21:38.280 of disability justice that sins invalid created uh i think aligns very well with with what we want
00:21:47.720 not just for the missing witches coven but what many witches uh want to do currently in in our
00:21:53.720 current society which is understand intersectionality practice anti-capitalist politic
00:22:01.960 uh understand that there's a myth of independence and that in fact we are part of that
00:22:06.520 interdependence if the mycelial network exists why do we think humans have to be independent right
00:22:11.880 right um sustainability which in ivy's book there's a real push to like you don't have to
00:22:20.520 do all the things you have to be able to sustain yourself this is a life practice you know um and
00:22:27.460 then the idea of collective you know and so on and so forth into collective access and collective
00:22:31.880 liberation like why are we choosing to be a witch if we are not actively taking a stand against 0.97
00:22:38.860 the current ableist racist sexist homophobic transphobic systems right the the witch is an 0.91
00:22:48.420 outsider by nature of the fact that she knows that she doesn't trust and or they don't trust 0.98
00:22:55.260 and they know that the system is wrong in some way um and so yeah it's it's that's where i come 0.93
00:23:07.440 from and understanding and why I, I, when I meet other disabled witches, it's a very validating
00:23:15.000 experience and it's a very affirming experience. One thing that a lot of us in the coven talk
00:23:21.120 about is the idea of witchy FOMO. So the fear of missing out and how part of, I think what we do
00:23:28.440 as a coven is to
00:23:30.960 to validate those feelings and to say
00:23:36.560 like you don't have to come to all the things like for real
00:23:40.620 you don't have to do all the stuff
00:23:43.420 what you see on social media in terms
00:23:48.500 of the sort of societal expectation
00:23:52.860 of the witch which is a strange thing to talk about I feel like that's an oxymoron
00:23:57.060 a little bit um but it's like no you don't have to you don't have to like do all you know the
00:24:03.340 step by step and to spend all this money to look a certain way and be a certain way so
00:24:08.700 yeah the witch is is one of us whether people recognize them or not but you know the the maiden
00:24:18.640 the mother and the crone are all these if that's how you express your witchcraft they are also
00:24:24.820 disabled archetypes even the youngest right she's still they are still an outsider um so yeah i think
00:24:33.160 that that can be a beautiful thing and then when you take in the works of of alice wong and and so
00:24:39.400 many other um disabled activists and educators and leaders because leadership is the most impacted
00:24:46.620 as a tenant and although i am disabled i recognize because i'm white i am not a member of the
00:24:52.320 leadership of the most impacted um but i am a learner of the leadership of the most impacted
00:24:58.220 um there's constant talk about the magic of disability and how in order to navigate ableist
00:25:07.660 spaces you have to be creative you have to improvise you have to connect you have to speak
00:25:14.840 out you have do you see where i'm going with this is all these things that which does you know so
00:25:21.700 um i just hope more people listen maybe listening to us or reading books and and just feel that
00:25:29.100 validation and the idea that witchy fomo is an ableist construct that you can work on releasing
00:25:34.620 yourself from because a witch is whatever you want it to be right this this is this is a life's work
00:25:41.980 for me i think i spent a lot of time just pretending i i wasn't ill um and and pushing
00:25:50.300 and pushing and pushing until I collapsed, and then remembering through that collapse,
00:25:56.480 oh yeah, you're ill.
00:25:59.300 And now this life's work has become protecting my boundaries, saying no, getting off on saying
00:26:06.620 no, you know, turning something down and then congratulating myself and having that be something
00:26:12.740 celebratory instead of something that makes me feel not good enough.
00:26:18.740 And you remind us all the time, Jasmine, in Coven that the disabled community is the
00:26:25.020 marginalized community that we will all join eventually, should we be lucky enough to live
00:26:31.280 long enough.
00:26:33.140 And of course, so many of the things that make our world accessible came from the disability
00:26:39.580 justice community.
00:26:41.220 If you are just dragging your shopping cart and there's a little ramp, then you have disability 1.00
00:26:48.280 justice to thank for that even though you are perfectly capable it makes it a little easier
00:26:53.560 but ivy you brought up scented candles i personally accidentally lit my hair on fire in february i
00:27:02.140 bring it up all the time when i show off my little electric candles um but there are multitude of
00:27:11.060 reasons that for whatever this doesn't work for you and jenny there's a whole section in your book
00:27:17.460 about like fire options for lack of a better term look at the moon the sun the stars these all hold
00:27:27.380 the power of fire so i'm wondering and maybe i'll start with you ivy like what are some of your
00:27:33.560 favorite substitutes for your personal life of you know what the witch book told me to do this but i
00:27:39.380 did this instead yeah i mean i love the led candles those are awesome one of my favorite things to do
00:27:45.700 is to thrift them because so many of them end up, it's so much cheaper and otherwise they would just
00:27:51.480 be going to landfill. So that's a favorite. And then recently, one of my favorite cleansing
00:27:58.280 options, I got a bell. I thrifted this bell and I ring it at the beginning of rituals. And I love
00:28:04.620 that as a substitute. Yeah, those are a couple of the big ones. How about you, Jenny? Do you have
00:28:11.080 any favorite subs yeah i have a lot actually a little sneak peek my next book is about uh living
00:28:18.960 a simple daily practice of witchcraft and it's a month by month and so one of the things i have in
00:28:24.820 there for winter that i've been doing and a couple people in the coven is if you get snow we use the
00:28:30.560 snow instead of a candle and so we like you take your snow and you kind of pack it in you can also
00:28:36.560 do an icicle if you like lucky enough to find one because they look like a taper candle and you can
00:28:41.060 put herbs on there or not and you put your attention on it and as it melts that's instead
00:28:46.000 of using a candle and then I just release it to the earth. I also use a bell. We have I live in
00:28:52.960 the in Oregon and anybody in the PNW has smoke season. Well it seems like everybody does now
00:28:57.760 and so we I got really into like okay what's an alternative because mugwort's my girl and that's
00:29:03.720 usually who I go to for smoke cleansing. So it's like okay what can we do instead like of course
00:29:08.220 there's simmer pots, but that isn't always good for everybody either. And so yeah, I got into
00:29:12.640 bells. And just like really for cleansing to just water, like you can just hold some water.
00:29:20.380 We make charged water, which is just, you know, put a jar of water in the full for 24 hours in a
00:29:26.460 windowsill get sun and moon with the intention that it's going to be charged. And you can just
00:29:32.460 even say a little prayer on there or not. And then you can use that like it doesn't.
00:29:36.020 I am very much like I also run an online coven and they I'm always like go to the grocery store
00:29:42.120 like make it simple use what you have here's some substitutes like that was I would grew up
00:29:47.860 hugging that poverty line as a kid and that was the hardest part about the older witchcraft books
00:29:52.880 is you need this and this herb and there was no substitution there's pre-internet I didn't get
00:29:58.780 internet in my home until college because I had to pay for it and it was just you know like I was
00:30:04.300 just stuck so a lot of times it's like well like what can i do like i couldn't go buy crystals i 0.54
00:30:09.960 couldn't you know go do that and so i've always been like a diy a thrifter a substitute girl and
00:30:15.700 so i'm always like in our coven they'll be like this is the spell i don't have any of this and
00:30:20.600 we're like brainstorming you can do this instead what do you have like and i and i want everyone
00:30:25.480 to know that works even better i think because you put all that thought and intention into it
00:30:30.200 Yes, I agree. And I'm so happy that you brought up this other accessibility idea, which is financial accessibility. Our coven shares that ethos with yours, that you don't need to buy anything.
00:30:45.260 you can look into a mud puddle and you don't have to fly to the ocean you can look in your bathroom
00:30:53.900 mirror you don't have to buy a crystal ball you know um and so again thank you for bringing
00:31:00.140 financial accessibility to this conversation around accessibility um of course the reality
00:31:08.540 of the situation is that um we we can't abide by toxic positivity we can't abide by spiritual
00:31:18.540 bypassing ivy you describe shitty vibes and shitty days and i think in this disability community 0.61
00:31:29.660 and in the witch community in the human in the in the all living and non-living communities 0.96
00:31:36.620 There are shitty vibes and shitty days. 1.00
00:31:40.340 So I want to hear from all three of you. 0.95
00:31:43.460 How do you get through the shitty vibes and the shitty days?
00:31:48.740 Yeah, I find that if I have the spoons on a shitty day, I pause what I'm doing and I make a little miniature altar, like a little just a little grab grab something from I have wicker baskets that I keep my witchcraft in.
00:32:05.240 and so I go to the wicker baskets and I pull what's calling to me and if I really don't have
00:32:10.960 sorry to interrupt but I also assume you probably thrifted those wicker baskets
00:32:15.360 correct thrift stores are full of wicker baskets y'all I mean that's a whole other thing that I
00:32:23.400 could talk about for a very long time thrifting your own magic like there's so much to be found
00:32:29.000 secondhand and to save the money to save the earth all of that and but back to shitty days
00:32:35.400 um so making an altar um one of my favorite one of my more recent um altar statues that i got is
00:32:46.440 a saint jude statue um and he is the patron saint of lost causes so sometimes i like to do a little
00:32:53.660 saint jude altar because it's just like and i'm pretty secular in my practice so it's a little
00:32:58.320 more archetypal but it's just like you know what this is what i'm putting out of the universe i'm
00:33:04.180 having a shitty day i'm exhausted and i'm calling out to any benevolent force that would understand
00:33:11.660 that this is a shitty day and that's where we're at thank you yes um i do this so often when i am
00:33:19.060 at the end of my rope and out of spoons and i think so many of us do this this is when if we
00:33:25.080 have a practice that involves deity or spirit universe god whatever god etc whatever you want
00:33:35.640 whatever words or ideas resonate with you but that's really when i go to my deity altar i have
00:33:43.000 nothing left i'm a big fan of isis who is like a great mother figure and as someone who was not
00:33:51.320 mothered in the way that i probably should have been um i turn to isis for that mothering just
00:33:57.720 exactly what you're talking about with saint jude ivy um when i feel like a lost cause i can go and
00:34:05.160 turn to my deity altar and say i don't have anything left please carry this for me now take
00:34:11.960 this can you fix this for me because i really don't have the juice to fix anything today and
00:34:18.040 there is something that is so like weight lifting about passing those fears anxieties not good
00:34:26.360 enough lost cause-ness onto your spiritual altar jenny how do you get through shitty vibes and
00:34:36.040 shitty days well i love what everybody else has already shared um a little background i was a
00:34:41.720 classroom teacher. And then I had two, I had four pregnancies, I had two children. And after the
00:34:49.660 second one, my health took such a dive. And of course, everyone was like, you're fine. Nothing's
00:34:56.560 wrong. All your blood works great. It's like, great. Why do I feel like I'm dying? I found a
00:35:00.440 health coach to work with. And I did this, like three year detox, like I didn't get to eat anything
00:35:06.340 yummy or, you know, it was just like really intense, which made me really tired. And that
00:35:11.640 really helped a little reset for me. But that all was a result of being a teacher and wanting to be
00:35:20.660 the best teacher. I'm an eldest daughter of a single mother and a millennial. So people pleasing
00:35:26.360 is my natural state of being. So I was like trying to be the best teacher. I was the one that was
00:35:33.160 there for all my students. I was the one that queer students came out to. I was the one the
00:35:36.420 students told abuse to. Like I was really there. And then I also wanted to be the absolute best
00:35:41.220 mother because I also was not mothered. And so it's like, I had all this stuff. It was a perfect
00:35:45.760 storm for my nervous system to be like, okay, you're done. And since then, since that big crash,
00:35:52.460 I have learned to check in with my, what granddaughter Crow, who's been on the show a few
00:35:59.020 times now has talked about the four bodies of existence. So something she's taught me.
00:36:04.820 And so she's taught me like you check in with your mental body, your physical body,
00:36:09.540 your emotional body, and your spiritual body. And what are they saying today? And a lot of times my
00:36:15.320 physical body is saying, I would like to not do anything today. And so that's, I just am really,
00:36:22.320 really working on, and this is probably going to be a lifetime journey of really listening
00:36:27.580 to myself because I don't want to have the shitty days. I don't want to be held down. I don't want
00:36:33.300 to be held back. And that's been a real personal struggle for me. I also go to my altar. I'm
00:36:39.460 devoted to Santa Muerte, who I really think is wonderful for disabled people because she doesn't
00:36:47.260 care what you do or what your past is or who you are. She'll just take you. And so I often will
00:36:53.800 just say like i feel terrible today can you help as my mother in life and death can you just help
00:36:58.940 me get through the day and that's probably like all what i have going on me but i think the biggest
00:37:04.400 thing is to actually listen and it's okay to give in to the shitty days if you can if you can rest
00:37:10.900 can you remind us again what the four bodies are yeah so granddaughter crow everybody should read
00:37:18.320 her books I'm just saying I adore her I mean we love GDC around here we are down with GDC yeah
00:37:24.420 yeah she's amazing and she um she's so excited I was on the show today she's like oh yes like
00:37:31.460 love everybody over there so um yeah so she talks about how we have these four bodies and you
00:37:39.620 really and I really like seeing them as bodies like I'm a I'm not too much of a visual person
00:37:45.440 but I do try to see them as like these four kind of separate selves, right?
00:37:49.780 Kind of like how people will separate their ego or their inner child from their inside,
00:37:55.180 like in their mental thoughts.
00:37:56.540 And so you have your physical body and that's, you know,
00:38:00.180 you're the one, their earth body and that's one body.
00:38:03.180 You have your mental body, which is where all your thoughts are.
00:38:06.620 And, you know, what runs on repeat when you're trying to sleep at night.
00:38:10.100 And then you have your emotional body, which is like checking in.
00:38:13.520 if you work with chakras your heart chakra space and like what am i what am i feeling because for
00:38:18.640 me that's the one i shove furthest down personally and i never i'm like oh oh i'm feeling terrible i
00:38:23.900 didn't even realize and then the spiritual body which i think for witches is kind of like the
00:38:29.740 easiest one for a lot of us to access because we do such a witchcraft is such a um solo path for
00:38:35.960 a lot of us like we really have to do a lot of the work and so that spiritual body is that part
00:38:40.120 of you that higher self that part that if you read tarot cards that you know gives the answers
00:38:44.840 or the part that is able to be in community with other witches so those are the four bodies kind
00:38:49.760 of in a nutshell jasmine how do you get through the inevitable shitty vibes and shitty days 0.96
00:38:57.040 i think it's valid that sometimes you don't you just roll with the shitty vibes and the shitty 0.95
00:39:03.160 days like just roll with it because the world society is ableist full stop it's racist it's 0.99
00:39:12.380 ableist it's transphobic it's homophobic it's anti-woman it's anti-child it's all those things
00:39:18.700 and then we're expected to be the good little worker bees and just function um i also think
00:39:28.380 it's totally valid if you do i do a lot of deity and ancestral work uh to view them
00:39:35.280 as your support workers so many disabled folks have care workers
00:39:41.120 if you are a disabled witch or identify that way even though i'd say all witches are disabled
00:39:47.860 witches um though the the saint jude and santo muerte and whomever else you wish to connect with
00:39:57.900 um or alice wong who's now an ancestor uh they can be your support workers they can be your
00:40:04.620 care workers and it's okay to say i can't do this right now deal with it ask them for help i think a
00:40:10.740 lot of um we talk a lot about doing that type of witchcraft and work but we we seldom like actually
00:40:20.300 ask for help like hey i i need you to do this for me right now if that would be cool with you
00:40:27.080 I'd rather not deal with this
00:40:29.560 currently
00:40:30.300 lying on the floor 0.99
00:40:34.500 by your altar and doing shit all 1.00
00:40:37.560 is witchcraft too 0.99
00:40:39.000 right like 1.00
00:40:39.860 I wanted
00:40:41.520 I was going to say this for the end but I just want people to know
00:40:45.280 that if you're wondering currently
00:40:46.980 am I witchy enough am I queer enough
00:40:49.340 am I disabled enough the answer is yes
00:40:51.560 the answer is always yes
00:40:54.400 always yes
00:40:56.180 um but yeah so the two it's very normal for not to feel normal in this particularly in 2026
00:41:10.380 uh we are in very strange times and the vibes are off so it's important to also sometimes it's just
00:41:22.920 about connection and it's just about reaching out like the amount of the amount of conversations I
00:41:28.440 have over my phone with random different people where we just sometimes you just got to send a
00:41:33.700 silly meme about it or just say like everything sucks right now yeah everything does suck right 0.99
00:41:39.940 now and I think that community connection is so has been so ruined by by that capitalist white 0.98
00:41:50.680 supremacist imperialist society i don't know exactly how bell hooks put it but that's bell
00:41:55.860 hooks witchcraft that that she put upon us which thank goodness for that um and so creating
00:42:03.880 community whether it's in the digital space or the physical space because the digital space does
00:42:08.680 count and i say that because sometimes in schools we are taught to tell students that digital spaces
00:42:17.580 don't count and so they do they do um that connection's important to to as little as it
00:42:29.380 may seem and there's nothing that is insignificant and i go back to that mycelial network because
00:42:35.300 alice wong and in her book disability intimacy talks about it at the beginning i think she says
00:42:40.420 something like i am but one small shiitake mushroom in the great mycelial network of disabled people
00:42:46.200 and we're all just looking out we're all just want to be together and make sure that we all
00:42:51.920 are able to fruit and spore and pass on um I'm definitely paraphrasing very loosely what she said 0.93
00:42:58.900 but I'm just one bit and sometimes that bit feels like shit and it's okay and it's okay 0.52
00:43:10.340 because tomorrow's gonna come whether in the moment i like that or not and um 0.89
00:43:17.220 things change and ebb and flow and for some of us our brains and bodies our body minds don't like
00:43:24.800 the idea of change don't like the idea of shift because it takes us out of the safe space but 0.58
00:43:29.140 it's it's gonna happen so i my shitty days i ride with it and just like at work because i am an
00:43:37.140 educator uh i have sick days i will take sick days when i need them without explanation because
00:43:45.320 that's my right to step back it is also my right as a witch to step back and say i'm just gonna
00:43:52.820 lie on the floor right now and that's fine i know that it's a full moon or i know that it's a new
00:43:57.380 moon and y'all are busy doing whatever you need to do um the act of rejection of witchy fomo i
00:44:04.560 think is a really important witchcraft practice and a very magical practice so if that's all
00:44:09.320 you're doing for years and years is just rejecting that that witchy that feeling of not being enough
00:44:15.620 that is a huge deep magical practice vocabulary has been very useful for me um i will sometimes
00:44:25.620 if i'm i have no energy um i will declare a bobo day i will say to my spouse it's a bobo day
00:44:33.640 I will be watching TV and you know nothing else and the dishes aren't gonna
00:44:40.420 get done and the laundry is not gonna happen and you're gonna have to bring
00:44:43.720 home supper because that it's a Bobo day but saying Bobo day for some reason
00:44:49.840 just makes it feel better than saying oh I just I just don't have it today or I
00:44:55.780 just can't instead I'm like nope it's a Bobo day and it's kind of like it's
00:45:00.860 It's almost celebratory in a way when I get to declare a bobo day.
00:45:08.560 Today is the equinox and the autumn equinox and it's a day about balance. 0.97
00:45:19.700 Balance is a word that I struggle with because I feel like I'm never going to be able to
00:45:25.480 get that perfect weight on one side and weight on the other to balance perfectly.
00:45:33.640 So how does one celebrate the autumn equinox, or Mabon as it's also known, in a way that 0.77
00:45:43.240 celebrates divergence and disability?
00:45:47.100 I'm gonna start with Jenny. 0.53
00:45:48.340 Jenny, how can we celebrate the equinox in a way that celebrates divergence and disability? 0.99
00:45:56.240 Well, you can celebrate it with me for free. 0.95
00:45:59.060 I will be at live on Insight Timer, which is a free meditation app, which I recommend
00:46:05.400 to people all the time because you can try every kind of meditation on there because
00:46:09.680 I am a firm believer that everyone can meditate no matter what's going on in your body or
00:46:14.280 mind.
00:46:15.960 That's the one criticism I got a lot on my book was that I suggested meditation and I
00:46:22.800 talk about meditative moments.
00:46:24.640 like if you cross stitch that's meditation because you're relaxed if you sometimes my meditation is
00:46:31.140 truly I love I'm a floor person so yes I will lay face down on the floor and take some breaths
00:46:36.580 that's my meditation like it doesn't have to look like our view of it so at 1 p.m pacific time I
00:46:43.600 will be live on insight timer and I will be doing a guided meditation on balance like what does it
00:46:50.600 mean we're going to check in with our body and then we're going to do a little tarot spread and
00:46:54.320 if people don't have cards, I'll be doing it for the collective. And then we're going to do a
00:46:58.000 little journaling. And I wanted to give that as an offering to people because there's so much
00:47:03.660 pressure, um, gosh, especially on social media to have these grand, we're talking about witchy
00:47:09.600 FOMO, to have these grand altars and ceremonies and dress like Stevie Nicks and just be hot and
00:47:16.200 cool and sexy and fun. And it's like, my practice, I'm usually in my pajamas. And that's why you
00:47:24.440 don't see like my practice on there as much, you know, but it's personal. It's pajamas,
00:47:29.440 the altar gets dusty. And I'm like, you know, shooing my cats away and telling my kids to be
00:47:35.320 quiet. Like that's the real reality of it. So yeah, it's just a little offering for people
00:47:40.460 that are like, what can I do today? You can join me, I'll guide you. And then you'll feel like,
00:47:44.540 okay i did something and you won't have hopefully the fomo and listeners i'm gonna put the link to
00:47:51.640 jenny's insight in the show notes for this episode so head over to missingweaches.com
00:47:57.780 the show notes will have a link to that ivy how can we celebrate the equinox in a way that celebrates
00:48:07.920 diversity divergence and disability so the way i do it um it's a really simple practice i made
00:48:19.520 um i like diy projects and i made these fidget necklaces for each of the wheel of the year
00:48:28.380 holidays and so if i do nothing else i wear the fidget necklace perfect
00:48:35.080 and maybe fidget with it a little bit and maybe fidget with it
00:48:41.380 perfect i love it i love it jasmine how do you celebrate equinox in a way that celebrates
00:48:52.860 divergence and disability just appreciating what the change of season and that possibility of change
00:49:02.160 i journal a lot and so i think maybe what it depends how i'm feeling that day i'll probably
00:49:09.480 i think i'll be at work anyway so it'll be something after but um
00:49:14.300 for me if we visualize for our visual folks the idea of falling leaves on this equinox
00:49:25.340 and the things falling away.
00:49:29.680 Perhaps what can fall away is two questions
00:49:33.580 that I'm currently kind of personally reflecting on.
00:49:38.320 We have to shift and fall away from, 1.00
00:49:40.860 am I doing this witchcraft practice correctly 0.82
00:49:43.560 into what kinds of knowledge does my body-mind make possible
00:49:50.180 and how can my witchcraft practice honor that?
00:49:55.340 So maybe today on the equinox, you just think of those two statements and visualize the
00:50:03.580 falling leaves of, am I doing this practice correctly?
00:50:07.900 That's falling off those trees that you've planted.
00:50:11.300 And instead, what's going to come later, maybe you take all the way to the spring equinox
00:50:17.940 and then you have your answer to what kinds of knowledge does my body mind make possible 0.57
00:50:23.740 and how can my practice honor that because you are witchy enough so no matter what we're doing 0.53
00:50:31.480 for the equinox it's fine no matter what you're doing it's totally fine it's totally fine
00:50:41.100 a friend of mine very recently got into witchcraft um and i think it was maybe the spring equinox at
00:50:47.600 the time and i was like it's the spring equinox and you're a witch now and she was like what do
00:50:52.560 i do you know what do i do and i said notice that it's the equinox and that is really all you have
00:51:01.380 to do jasmine um if listeners want to support your work or follow you what's the best way to
00:51:08.000 do that what's the best place to find you oh my goodness um i am i think if i can remember my
00:51:14.360 instagram handle i'm at j aurora because it's my name j-a-u-r-o-r-a 88 on instagram um if you
00:51:25.120 really want to connect with me you have to join the missing witches coming
00:51:28.140 but yeah i i have uh i have a bit of a social media presence but no um if they want to support
00:51:38.840 me i would say you don't have to support me but please support your local disability rights
00:51:44.320 organization disability justice organization um if i could plug alice wong's legacy of uh
00:51:51.360 crips e-sims for gaza please if you'd like to donate financially to that that's important um
00:51:59.120 and also if you really want to support disabled witches maybe um thinking about how you can be 0.83
00:52:05.040 covid safe in your life and masking and making sure the air is clean for folks and when you're
00:52:12.080 hosting events in person you know consider how to make it covid safe because some of us are
00:52:17.880 chronically ill because of of covid um yeah you and if you want to just connect like i said you
00:52:24.380 can find me on missing witches you'll just have to come in and see and of course i i'll double
00:52:31.200 check the spelling of your instagram handle and put that in the show notes too i can't remember
00:52:36.100 it's fine don't worry about it it's fine i'm gonna take care of that for you babe let me be your
00:52:41.240 altar jenny of course by the books the one we're talking about today is called divergent witchcraft
00:52:49.500 and you have two other books as well so feel free to plug those right now yeah i wanted to let
00:52:55.520 everybody know divergent witchcraft is also an audiobook i'm really proud of it because the
00:52:59.920 voice actress did a really nice job um someone's like why don't you read it it's like i don't want
00:53:04.780 to like that seems like a lot of work for me and i'm not a voice actress so anyway it's really
00:53:11.060 nice. She did a wonderful job. And then I have Spirit Crystals, which is definitely more on the
00:53:19.440 woo-woo side, but I do talk about Hecate in there. And then I have a third book to be determined on
00:53:25.520 the title, but it'll be basically every chapter is a month. And I just talk about like how to
00:53:31.480 live your practice. Cause that's something I get a lot is like, okay, I'm a witch. Now what do I do
00:53:36.200 like every day? And I was like, well, you don't have to do anything, but you know, it's like,
00:53:40.140 just kind of some ideas. And you can find me, I have, I got to, we talked about GDC,
00:53:46.080 but I recently became a co-host on her podcast, Belief Being and Beyond. And we are hosting,
00:53:53.300 every month we're trying to host different kind of like round table dialogues with different folks.
00:53:58.960 You can find me on my own podcast, Cozy Coven Chats. And you can find me sometimes on the
00:54:04.080 Witches Movie Coven with Patti Negri, and that's completely silly. So we are just talking about
00:54:10.040 witchy movies, and it's just a really good time. We're going to be talking about Practical Magic
00:54:15.740 too soon, so it's always on Wednesday and it's live, and it's so funny. If you are a Jason Menke
00:54:23.360 fan, if anybody's ever read his books, his books are so like very serious and intellectual, but he
00:54:27.840 is absolutely hysterical, so that's really fun. And then my website is JennySebell.com.
00:54:34.840 I'm so excited about this witch movie podcast.
00:54:37.840 Jasmine was talking about doing one with another coven mate of ours.
00:54:42.240 We just did, I host something called Witchcraft 101.
00:54:46.360 And so we just kind of like take a casual approach to different subjects.
00:54:49.560 And just yesterday we did pop culture witches.
00:54:53.380 So we had a whole conversation about witches and movies.
00:54:57.640 And you'll send me all the links and I will put them in the show notes to all of that.
00:55:01.840 Ivy, how can our listeners support you, find you, lift you up?
00:55:06.580 I know that there is an accompanying deck of cards for Disability Witchcraft that is not out yet, but I think there's a pre-order link out there.
00:55:18.500 Anyway, you say it.
00:55:19.860 Yeah.
00:55:20.720 So, of course, you can buy the book, Disabled Witchcraft. 1.00
00:55:23.780 The best place to do that is microcosm.pub slash disabled witch. 0.83
00:55:28.520 and um my other books well the oracle deck for disabled witchcraft is coming out in 2027
00:55:35.880 and there's a kickstarter that just wrapped up um but you can find more information about
00:55:41.060 that and all the other stuff that i'm writing at linktree.com slash ivy zeller that's got my
00:55:46.660 instagram handle too and you also wrote a book called let me find it nature names for nbs and
00:55:56.680 other queer folks and you just did a name change so this is a subject that's very do you have 30
00:56:02.640 seconds to tell us about what that book's about yeah absolutely that one's coming out in 2027 as
00:56:07.660 well and it is a little book of a whole bunch of nature names for nbs and other queer folks who
00:56:15.460 are changing their name um i changed my name for a lot of reasons one of which is i wanted something
00:56:20.760 that was a little more reflective of my queer identity. And I noticed that a lot of my friends
00:56:26.620 who had made name changes had picked nature names. And so I thought, hey, what if we essentially had
00:56:32.040 a baby name book, but for naming yourself? And that's how that book came into being.
00:56:38.340 Brilliant. And now that you mention it, like, yeah, I'm going all through my list of people
00:56:44.400 that I know that have changed their names. And they're all like, almost all of them are nature.
00:56:49.680 that's what an interesting phenomenon huh well by way of concluding and again we could talk about
00:56:59.080 this all day and night but we are disabled witches with adhd and we can no longer concentrate
00:57:06.940 in this space so we're going to wrap it up because we're tired and we're and and we're
00:57:15.940 stimming but i do want to pass the mic to ivy to read a blessing for us for all of our
00:57:26.380 divergence for all of our disability for all of us who are currently lying on the floor
