00:00:13.900 The Missing Witches deck of oracles. 1.00
00:00:16.200 You aren't being a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:19.020 Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! Be a witch! 1.00
00:00:22.420 You must be a witch. 0.98
00:00:30.000 It's not been an easy year. Globally, greed, violence, and the struggle for power claw at the skin of a loving Earth. 0.81
00:00:45.540 Everything hurts
00:00:47.880 I'm anxious, panicky
00:00:51.260 Risa is sick
00:00:53.620 My best friend's father is slowly dying
00:00:58.000 A new friend died, an old friend died
00:01:00.680 A flood washed away a chunk of my land
00:01:03.860 And it's all got me thinking too much
00:01:06.620 About the impermanent nature of everything I hoped
00:01:10.800 Or naively assumed was forever
00:01:14.480 So I return to learning the stories of role models
00:01:19.140 And sharing them with you
00:01:21.320 That they might give you hope
00:01:23.760 Strength
00:01:25.420 Tools
00:01:27.000 Or understanding
00:01:28.760 And give them to me, too
00:01:31.580 And I return again and again
00:01:34.700 To the little room
00:01:36.880 Where thousands of wax discs tell my life story
00:01:41.340 I return to turntables
00:01:43.700 that spin in circles like planets, like time.
00:01:49.660 I weep. I laugh. I dance.
00:01:54.480 Reborn. On repeat.
00:01:57.300 I've heard many people say that music saved their lives.
00:02:01.420 For me, music saves my soul,
00:02:06.420 pulls me back from the brink of despair,
00:02:09.740 And connects me to divine beauty that has always, always existed
00:02:17.380 You see, the universe as we know it
00:02:21.140 Was structured by sound waves emitted by the Big Bang
00:02:25.240 Or as Alexa Rose sings it
00:02:28.440 We are created by sound
00:02:31.780 We are created by the song of the universe
00:02:37.520 All creation sings.
00:02:46.400 All creation sings.
00:02:49.400 And for me, in my life, music has always been magic.
00:02:53.460 The greatest source of it.
00:02:55.420 A mystical well where I, with my meager human-shaped bucket,
00:03:00.100 can, at any time, in any place,
00:03:03.280 gather that elixir to hydrate my soul.
00:03:06.820 And as we at Missing Witches also gather names to add to the list of people who help us define what magic is, what a soul is, what it might mean to be a witch, I hear the music of Alice Coltrane.
00:03:24.780 Alice Coltrane who, no stranger to loss, found music and found God.
00:03:32.700 I titled this episode Spiritual Jazz for two main reasons.
00:03:38.000 First, it's a kind of jazz music that has some kind of influence of spirituality,
00:03:43.580 like an older, cooler, wiser, deeper, third cousin twice removed of Christian rock.
00:03:49.400 It's a music genre, spiritual jazz,
00:03:51.600 one that Alice Coltrane embodied and exploded in musical fractals of auditory kaleidoscopes.
00:03:58.760 Unlike Christian rock, most spiritual jazz has no lyrics
00:04:03.780 So rather than telling you about spirit, spreading an idea with words, dogma, indoctrination
00:04:11.680 Spiritual jazz encourages us to experience what spirituality is, means, feels like
00:04:21.820 To conceive of an idea through the vibrations of a universe explained in the emotion of notes.
00:04:31.120 Spiritual jazz.
00:04:33.720 Second, when I think of jazz, I think about complexity, simplicity, whiplash-style perfectionism, and wild improvisation.
00:04:43.520 Avant-garde ways of rethinking time signatures and expectations.
00:04:48.560 It's soft, cool, free, acid, bebop, swing
00:04:54.740 Joyful, angry, soothing, confrontational, celebratory, mournful
00:05:00.540 All things
00:05:03.240 And all creation sings
00:05:07.680 And to me, witchcraft is a kind of spiritual jazz
00:05:12.980 Where we are free to follow, create, bend, and break the rules
00:05:18.280 where reverence, play, and choice lock into a rhythm to honor the universe.
00:05:27.180 Spiritual jazz.
00:05:35.580 I'm currently listening to Alice Coltrane's album Journey in Satchanandana,
00:05:42.660 recorded in 1970.
00:05:48.280 Cecil McBee comes in on bass, Tulsi on tambour, Vishni Wood on Ood, and Alice, who wrote all
00:05:57.040 the songs, makes her grand entrance to the party with the sweeping of harp strings.
00:06:03.620 heart strings my heart sings and i am in a state of spiritual jazz
00:06:21.200 this is the first alice coltrane record i ever owned alice released or played on more than 20
00:06:29.280 albums, wrote at least four books, opened an ashram, but she's probably best known as
00:06:35.500 Wife of saxophonist John Coltrane. We see this all the time. Wife of, more famous but likely
00:06:44.120 less interesting man, influencing from behind and beside the spotlight. So let's take today to dig
00:06:52.680 through my record collection and amplify the tones of Alice Coltrane, who hoped her music
00:06:58.480 would be a, quote, form of meditation and spiritual awakening for those who listen with
00:07:06.700 their inner ear, end quote. Let's listen to her story with our inner ears and hear her music
00:07:15.760 with our guts. In 1972, she told Downbeat magazine, quote, I would go through all the
00:07:22.820 great scriptures of the world, and in every religion I found the same thought. The divine
00:07:28.340 sound is the creative force in the universe. Music is that sound. End quote. One source I found says
00:07:39.480 that Alice was born in Alabama in 1937, and her family moved to Detroit soon after. But every
00:07:45.880 other source says she was born in Detroit, so let's just stick with that. Detroit in 37 was a
00:07:51.800 city at a crossroads, a place of industrial might, opportunity, and economic challenges,
00:07:59.280 racial tensions, and growing labor movements. It was also already laying the foundations to be one
00:08:07.420 of the great hotbeds of American music. And Alice came from a musical family, mom in the church
00:08:14.100 choir, brother a drummer, sister who would go on to become a songwriter at Motown, and a father who
00:08:20.140 encouraged it all. She played gigs, mostly piano, wherever she could in Detroit, church, weddings,
00:08:27.880 funerals, until she moved to Paris in the late 50s, where she studied classical music and jazz.
00:08:35.260 It was in Paris that she met her first husband, Kenny, whose heroin addiction drove Alice to take
00:08:40.260 their young daughter, Michelle, back to her family in Detroit. Now, John Coltrane was also a heroin
00:08:47.980 and alcohol addict, but he had already kicked by the time he and Alice met. He called his recovery
00:08:54.860 a spiritual awakening and divine intervention. When John met Alice in 1963 at Birdland,
00:09:03.240 a jazz club in New York City where Alice was performing as piano accompanist to vibraphonist
00:09:10.020 Terry Gibbs, the two soulmates hit it off immediately, both sharing a deep love of jazz
00:09:16.700 in an ever-expanding definition of and devotion to their spirituality. John introduced Alice to
00:09:24.800 meditation and Eastern philosophy. For me, part of what elevates the musical genius of both John
00:09:32.140 and Alice, and maybe part of what connected them on that soul level musically, was their ability
00:09:38.280 to improvise, to be moved equally by education and intuition, to hear what music wants to be
00:09:46.620 in the world in that exact moment, and to be able to play it. To be so in the pocket,
00:09:54.920 as musicians say, that you can go off into the clouds while keeping feet rooted and eyes
00:10:01.960 connected to the people you're making music with. It requires confidence and imagination.
00:10:10.020 It's how we witches can improvise our craft, finding that point of intersection between our
00:10:16.720 bodies, minds, and spirits. What do we feel? What do we think? What do we dream? How do we combine
00:10:29.460 these into a spell that works. And indeed, Alice Coltrane's music just works as a devotional
00:10:36.580 offering to God, as a means for meditation, as a way to connect with our inner selves, as a spell.
00:10:45.300 It works. Alice and John had three children together. Alice appeared on many of John's
00:10:52.160 albums, and together they revolutionized music. Then, in 1967, at the age of 40, John died of
00:11:02.300 liver cancer. Alice was rocked, but channeled her grief into music, recording and releasing
00:11:09.940 her requiem for John, an album she called A Monastic Trio, quote, music dedicated to the
00:11:18.080 mystic Ondathru, known as John Coltrane. End quote. She said, quote, after John passed,
00:11:27.820 my deep concern was to rise above the normal, human, mundane feeling of loss. I had to transcend
00:11:36.720 it. I began looking for help, searching for guidance. I had to take that experience into
00:11:44.080 another realm, to go beyond loss, to find a deeper understanding of the universe and my
00:11:51.380 place within it. It wasn't until after John passed that I began to understand more deeply
00:11:57.980 that music can serve as a vehicle for the soul's expression of the divinity.
00:12:14.080 I'm currently listening to a monastic trio.
00:12:27.680 I'm trying to transcend loss.
00:12:31.900 I can hear the freneticism of grief in Alice's piano playing.
00:12:36.700 Scattered emotions run as fingers hit keys.
00:12:40.440 Keys hit hammers.
00:12:42.160 Hammers hit wires.
00:12:44.080 Low notes mourn and rhythms dance
00:12:48.580 Tumbling octaves, sometimes discordant
00:12:52.720 Sometimes like butterfly wings, sometimes bat wings
00:12:56.720 Give our inner ears a soundscape of the spiraling nature of contending with loss
00:13:04.160 Her harp enters
00:13:06.720 And we imagine Angel John halo aglow
00:13:11.180 As Leroy Jones puts it, quote,
00:13:14.500 The spiritual theories of John's spirit are a code sprinkled in the endless arpeggios, end quote.
00:13:23.740 The massive golden harp that Alice played was a gift from John.
00:13:28.020 He had ordered it for her before he died, but it wasn't delivered until after he was gone.
00:13:35.080 To Alice, this was a message from spirit to continue John's work and musical explorations.
00:13:41.180 to encode his spirit in arpeggios.
00:13:46.560 The liner notes of a monastic trio include an interview that Alice gave to Pauline Ravelli,
00:13:51.700 who wrote, quote,
00:13:53.220 Sitting with Alice Coltrane in her home, one could actually feel the presence of John Coltrane.
00:14:00.600 Surrounded by his children, John Jr., who looks exactly like his father,
00:14:05.500 Ravi, and baby Aranian,
00:14:07.700 A feeling of great love permeated the air.
00:14:12.060 Spiritually, John Coltrane was there too.
00:14:15.600 A huge golden harp sat next to a concert grand piano.
00:14:20.060 Drums and cymbals, bells and gongs were about the room, reminding us of John Coltrane's explorations and sound.
00:14:28.420 The quiet dignity of Alice Coltrane, the tranquility and graciousness of her home, confirmed the belief that John Coltrane truly left a great legacy to those dear to him, peace and love, end quote.
00:14:47.860 According to Alice, John wasn't looking to make music. He was trying to channel a universal sound.
00:14:54.920 How to even attempt to conjure the soul's expression of divinity into music, into a universal sound?
00:15:04.360 To accomplish this, Alice blended everything she could find from the whole world.
00:15:11.480 She went through a profound period of grief and soul-searching,
00:15:15.600 which led her to explore many religions and mystical traditions as pathways to peace and understanding.
00:15:23.040 Alice threw herself entirely into this spiritual seeking, her search leading her to study the teachings of several spiritual traditions from around the world, including Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, as she sought that greater understanding of life and the universe.
00:15:43.380 Spiritual Jazz
00:15:45.380 In Monument Eternal, the music of Alice Coltrane, Franya Berkman, an accomplished music scholar and composer herself, wrote,
00:15:54.560 She clearly drew from whatever sources were available.
00:15:59.260 In her prose, she moved between disparate styles, poetry, first-person diary confessions, and the mystical direct writing of God's word.
00:16:08.560 She borrowed liberally from the King James Bible, from translations of the Bhagavad Gita, and from her own colloquial speech.
00:16:18.840 In parallel fashion, her music synthesized gospel progressions, western art music, and dissonant free-meter improvisations.
00:16:29.720 Alice produced a hybrid artistry that spoke in tongues.
00:16:34.720 She uttered the insider, ritual tongue of glossolalia,
00:16:39.820 drawing on the sacred and secular vernaculars of Detroit's African-American subculture.
00:16:45.800 She also spoke in the multiple public discourses of art and music and jazz modernism.
00:16:51.000 Her work achieved a complex synthesis that does ultimately both affirm and challenge the values and expectations of the reader.
00:17:01.640 that said her oeuvre moves completely beyond these binaries her self-proclaimed mysticism
00:17:10.420 disrupts these relational modes in fact i believe that alice was trying to transcend
00:17:16.640 the complex subjectivity and to do so required moving beyond the realm of the material world
00:17:24.660 and its limits and conditions, end quote.
00:17:30.200 Alice became particularly drawn to Hinduism
00:17:32.900 and the teachings of Swami Satchindananda,
00:17:35.920 a prominent Indian spiritual leader
00:17:38.220 who was known for building bridges
00:17:39.820 between Eastern spiritual wisdom and Western audiences.
00:17:44.320 Swami Satchindananda's teachings on the inner self
00:17:47.680 resonated deeply with Alice's growing
00:17:50.340 and expanding spiritual inclinations.
00:17:52.640 The details of how they met seem to have gone undocumented, but we do know that Swami had at some point moved to the U.S.
00:18:01.140 and gained recognition for his ability to blend Eastern wisdom and the Western world.
00:18:08.960 His teachings focused on yoga, meditation, and the philosophy of oneness and universal consciousness,
00:18:16.960 concepts that resonated with Alice's own evolving spiritual understanding.
00:18:22.640 Throughout the early 70s, this connection to the Swami, to Hinduism, and to this calling deepened.
00:18:29.860 In 1970, she made the aforementioned album, Journey in Satchindandana,
00:18:35.580 named in honour of Swami, and Universal Consciousness the following year.
00:18:40.760 i'm currently listening to universal consciousness but listening is the wrong word i am experiencing
00:18:55.640 what it might sound like to dig past the depths of consciousness to reveal something deeper
00:19:02.100 something stranger than anything we understood before it's wild almost as if alice is going
00:19:10.280 through the stages of grief with each piece on each album. The universal consciousness
00:19:18.240 rips at my sanity, confronts my anger. I hear and feel a release of confusion and comfort
00:19:29.180 for a moment, listening.
00:19:36.060 I transcend loss
00:19:38.560 and enter a state of spiritual jazz.
00:19:44.860 In 1976, Alice Coltrane had a revelation
00:19:49.020 in which she received divine instruction
00:19:52.340 to renounce secular life
00:19:54.320 and don the orange robes of a swami,
00:19:57.060 or spiritual teacher in Hindu tradition.
00:20:01.220 Thereafter, she was known as Swamini, the feminine form of Swami,
00:20:06.140 Turya Asangita Nanda.
00:20:09.900 She translated her anointed name from Sanskrit as
00:20:13.360 the Transcendental Lord's Highest Song of Bliss.
00:20:18.920 Typically, a Hindu monk or guru ordains a Swami into a recognized lineage.
00:20:24.020 However, according to Alice, her initiation came directly from the Lord, a download resembling the call to preach in her family's Baptist faith.
00:20:37.100 In the last interview she granted before passing away, Alice recalled her experience.
00:20:43.800 Quote, 0.97
00:20:44.200 It started with taking sannyas.
00:20:48.100 That was a total mystical experience.
00:20:50.820 It was God's deliverance of his anointed mercy on me
00:20:56.300 I was told the night and time and to be prepared
00:21:00.740 So I got ready and put on a white dress and all
00:21:04.640 I noticed when the time came
00:21:07.100 The colors of orange were poured into the cloth of the dress I was wearing
00:21:12.960 And I just watched it happen
00:21:15.700 I just watched everything go into that beautiful saffron color
00:21:21.200 And my name was given, of course.
00:21:24.360 And the whole outline of the duty, the work, and mission were also revealed.
00:21:31.320 One of the directives given to me was to start the ashram.
00:21:34.820 At first, I don't think my idea was on sannyas or renunciation, as much as it was on having the availability to seek the Lord.
00:21:44.440 To be able to study spiritual scriptures and just to really immerse myself in living the spiritual life as much as possible
00:21:52.600 My children, I had raised them
00:21:55.760 My husband had passed some years ago
00:21:58.840 I had reached a point where most of my duties as a householder were fulfilled
00:22:04.780 It gave me the time to want to see
00:22:08.840 To want to strive
00:22:11.480 to want to devote quality time, end quote.
00:22:17.200 In 1983, Alice founded the Sai Anantam Ashram in Agoura Hills, California,
00:22:23.800 a spiritual center devoted to Hindu teachings, meditation, and devotional music.
00:22:29.680 At the ashram, she was known as Swamini Turyasangitananda, or Turya for short.
00:22:38.420 And we can imagine Alice at the right hand, a Sarasvati, goddess of music.
00:22:47.160 And like Sarasvati, Alice Coltrane invented a new language,
00:22:53.360 a fusion language between gospel and kirtan and everything in between.
00:22:59.480 She said, quote,
00:23:00.100 in music, I don't think I have a real preference about form, especially when it comes to a religious
00:23:06.740 faith or a spiritual conviction, because when you express your heart, it has to come from you,
00:23:14.940 end quote. And this too is how Alice Coltrane approached her spirituality. Her ashram's
00:23:22.080 mission statement reads, quote, the ashram serves as a sanctuary where seekers of all faiths can
00:23:28.920 receive and experience the sublime teachings on spiritual life, end quote. The creed of the ashram
00:23:37.880 says, quote, the Sai Anvantam ashram appreciates the contributions of spiritual wisdom and insight
00:23:45.220 from other faiths and religions. Studies undertaken at the ashram include not only Vedantic or Vedic
00:23:54.420 scriptures, the oldest of the world's literatures, but also exemplary narratives and scriptural
00:24:01.080 texts from more recent revelations of God, found in the Bible and in Islamic and Buddhist
00:24:08.760 texts.
00:24:10.280 A lot of things separate Alice from many gurus whose stories or actions give us the
00:24:17.840 ick.
00:24:18.120 Alice funded her community entirely by herself
00:24:22.380 her own royalties in the estate of John Coltrane
00:24:25.320 meant that she never had to focus on attracting new members
00:24:29.960 never had to come up with new ways of enticing people 0.99
00:24:34.160 and their money into her fold
00:24:37.360 and Alice never told people what to think 0.59
00:24:41.360 she would often respond to pleas for guidance
00:24:44.820 by telling the seeker to meditate on it
00:24:47.380 and come to conclusions themselves, adding,
00:24:50.820 Don't be so dependent.
00:24:53.780 Icky gurus rely on our dependence.
00:24:58.060 Alice advised against it.
00:25:01.420 She encouraged us to defy dogma and explore,
00:25:05.520 to find the voice of God anywhere we can,
00:25:09.320 not just in the words of teachers.
00:25:13.160 She transcended loss by building a community,
00:25:17.380 Not a power base.
00:25:20.200 She chanted to call out the names of God.
00:25:24.180 Like searching for a lost friend in the woods, where to call out their name alerts them.
00:25:30.280 Let's them know you are missing them.
00:25:33.380 And eventually, they hear you.
00:25:36.620 And you find each other.
00:25:39.500 She said, quote,
00:25:40.300 Bajan chanting extols the magnificence and holiness of God.
00:25:45.200 It celebrates the divine glories of the Lord.
00:25:49.660 Chanting consists of worshipping God through song and music.
00:25:54.120 Chanting removes agitations from the mind and brings peace.
00:25:59.180 It edifies one, uplifts the spirit, purifies the atmosphere, and elevates the consciousness.
00:26:09.760 End quote.
00:26:10.300 I think of Tina Turner, whose voice, already a force of nature, became a sacred tool in her practice of Nammyoho Renkyo.
00:26:21.840 She chanted like casting spells.
