00:00:14.500 If you've been searching for a community that believes resistance is sacred and re-enchantment
00:00:19.940 is necessary, that feminism is a spell we're still weaving all together, that care is radical,
00:00:26.780 that the future depends on our collective imagination, 0.97

00:00:56.780 Welcome back to the Missing Witches podcast. Listeners, sunlight, big winds, birds singing in the morning, your 10,000 ancestors reminding you that we've defeated fascists before. Welcome, you know, whoever shows up today. 0.59
00:01:12.700 And welcome especially to label mate and dear friend of the pod and sunshiny, gorgeous human, Christopher Marmolejo, author of Red Tarot and wonderful teacher in the arts of Liberatory Tarot and just like nice person to get to hang out with.
00:01:31.660 Hi.
00:01:32.360 Hi.
00:01:33.200 Thank you so much.
00:01:35.180 Oh, it's so good to be here.
00:01:36.340 I'm so happy to be on the label with y'all.
00:01:38.760 Yeah, I'm happy to get to hang out again.
00:01:41.360 And how has it been since your book came out?
00:01:44.940 How do you feel about your book and your work and your classes?
00:01:49.960 I feel, you know, I feel so good about having a craft.
00:01:56.460 We covered eights in class and we were talking about the eight of pentacles and we were just
00:02:03.780 talking about craft.
00:02:04.740 And I just love what I do.
00:02:07.180 Honestly, it's like I have one pinnacle, like whether I'm researching for something that I'm writing, I'm developing a class and then I'm teaching a class or I'm giving a talk or I'm able to sit in space with y'all.
00:02:17.260 And it's the sense of the manifold expression from the same root has been, I don't know, it's just so sustainable and enduring for me.
00:02:26.540 And time flies with the book.
00:02:28.660 I'm loving the feedback that I'm getting, but also paying attention to certain critiques that I've just always gotten as being an intelligent, vocal, brown person.
00:02:41.160 And so, yeah, anyways, I just love having a craft.
00:02:44.520 Can we backtrack a second for our listeners who maybe haven't heard you on the podcast before, have somehow never heard of Red Tarot or the Red Reed?
00:02:55.900 like who are you what do you do what are you doing yes yes yes yes the author of red tarot
00:03:04.680 i mean i am who am i oh my gosh an existential big question now i am my mother's child my
00:03:11.480 grandmother's child i am a christopher marmalejo i am in community with the serrano people the
00:03:19.800 The Pines. I teach tarot. I have a background in education. My master's in education taught
00:03:27.020 seventh and eighth grade English. And then the pandemic happened. I always say I had a pre-pandemic
00:03:32.100 in 2019 where I was like, where am I going with my life? You know, tarot and astrology
00:03:39.160 emerged. I wrote Red Tarot, A Decolonial Guide to Divinatory Literacy, which was released last
00:03:46.340 March 2024, and teach a variety of classes just kind of under that aim. Thankfully, 1.00
00:03:55.020 decolonization is a lifelong project, a generational lifelong project, and spacious 0.90
00:03:59.640 enough to continue working under or have that as an aim or a goal, a methodology, and using
00:04:10.380 the cards as a prism for archiving so much knowledge and catharsis, but also bringing
00:04:16.940 the notion of divination of sacred spirituality into the mix. I teach students, I give readings,
00:04:22.240 I write, I'm on Substack. Your Substack is fantastic. The Tina Turner.
00:04:28.340 Thank you. I'll say it was so wonderful. I appreciate that. That one was like,
00:04:33.920 certain things get cute. I'm sure y'all know being creatives yourselves. I was like,
00:04:37.720 that one was in me for so long when I finally had that expression I was like yes yeah and the visual
00:04:43.480 element of seeing Tina drawn as the strength card battling the lion I was like oh this is just for
00:04:50.520 me Christopher made this just for me I know you didn't but it felt like it no I did I'm glad yes
00:04:57.900 I'm like what's your favorite Tina Turner song for me it really depends I think Tina's prayer
00:05:03.840 I'm talking to the priest, the high priest, and all of y'all out there in the universe.
00:05:10.380 But lately, it's been, you better be good to me.
00:05:15.640 It's so...
00:05:16.920 Like, you better be good to me.
00:05:19.060 Not like, oh, you must be good to me, but like, you better be good to me.
00:05:23.100 It comes on.
00:05:24.700 Yes.
00:05:25.820 Yes.
00:05:26.680 She is my, she is the icon diva of strength.
00:05:29.560 Like, anytime I pull, I was just...
00:05:31.520 She is Tina.
00:05:32.780 I was so proud to write that in of only I'm always trying to like, like, that's not for not that anyone's forgetting about her, but just newer generations or younger people who I'm like, she is mythological.
00:05:45.020 Like she is so archetypal.
00:05:46.600 It's she's stunning.
00:05:48.060 Oh, a friend of mine recently asked on social media, what was the song that changed your reality as a child?
00:05:54.220 And mine was 100%.
00:05:55.920 We don't need another hero.
00:05:57.460 I was like, what is this?
00:05:58.700 I didn't know there was a movie, but the children singing and she just shook me.
00:06:04.200 Yeah, she would just be blasting out of my grandmother's jukebox.
00:06:08.080 You know, like, what's love got to do with it?
00:06:10.500 Of course.
00:06:11.880 Acid Queen, the video for Acid Queen is just like, this needs to be shown continuously.
00:06:18.880 We need to study this.
00:06:20.540 You know what I mean?
00:06:21.160 Like, it needs to be studied.
00:06:23.160 Oh, I praise Tina.
00:06:25.460 Thank you, Tina.
00:06:26.080 If you didn't have your mind blown by Tina Turner at some point in your life, today is the day.
00:06:32.220 Yes.
00:06:33.840 Okay, I have a question about divination.
00:06:36.220 You're teaching divination practice and such a wonderful writer on divination.
00:06:42.140 Thank you.
00:06:42.640 I was talking with Zoe Flowers, who has a wonderful podcast, Come to the Brink, about divination, especially astrology, after the U.S. election.
00:06:54.260 watching some people sort of implode like you know like some astrologers going so hard on
00:07:00.980 whatever their predictions were and then getting called out for being wrong and then blowing up
00:07:07.040 their communities and going to hide behind hay walls or you know like there's just like a lot
00:07:13.300 of really adamant predictions and not a lot of accountability after I wonder how you feel
00:07:20.680 about divination these days like when everything changes every two minutes we're drawn more to
00:07:27.120 divination and these chaos times out of control times but then yeah what do we actually use it
00:07:33.060 for that is useful that's grounding that's community building instead of just a way to sell
00:07:39.940 more to people who are afraid you know that is a whole word right there like you just said
00:07:45.620 so much that is so characteristic of how people engage and how it gets commodified right it's like
00:07:53.780 it is to sell this sense of peace or whatnot and i think that's where i've had i mean diviners are
00:08:01.140 like nothing is 100 right even the best studied like discipline diviner you know has margin of
00:08:11.300 error of course right we everything has a margin of error so there's that and i think that maybe
00:08:15.920 sometimes people put but but that sense of ego where someone's like this is you know word of
00:08:21.760 god like here is what's gonna happen you know is one that it's always like okay i approach it with
00:08:28.000 so much humility because it's like we may just be getting sometimes like a a people through
00:08:36.060 of what may happen right or i think of on a funny sense like that from that's so raven where you'd
00:08:41.820 get like a glimpse into the future but then it's like chaotic and totally decontextualized and like
00:08:46.860 you know what i mean it ends up causing it inevitably but it's this crazy scenario that
00:08:51.100 gets there i've definitely had ups and downs with divination and especially with prediction like in
00:08:56.000 terms of that sense of prediction as well like being disappointed by astrologers and their
00:09:02.460 predictions you know feeling locked into fate and studying my own birth chart being like buck 0.91
00:09:08.860 you know like goddamn I think that there is a real reckoning with scale in a real sense of 0.88
00:09:14.820 that that also humbles us against our notion that that man or human is the creator in the 0.97
00:09:23.020 center of the universe that they're all powerful and that we can just shape our will to be whatever
00:09:26.800 we want if we just pull our bootstraps up high enough that's not how I approach it I have a
00:09:32.100 certain container and I would say the red reed as a whole is like in that mode but this sense of like
00:09:36.780 what do we do with the fate that we lament and bringing that to the notion of fado which is
00:09:42.560 this Portuguese folk music in the intersection between all of the colonial history and this
00:09:49.640 musical catharsis where they were like man we're going to be washed away in this tidal wave or
00:09:57.360 whatnot, but we're not faltering in a faith either, necessarily. There is some surrender,
00:10:03.560 some sense of spiritual maturity that develops at the end of empire, at the end of decline,
00:10:08.360 as empire is collapsing, as language is pluralizing, you know? And so, like, I think of
00:10:14.480 so much of fate and stories of divination myths are tragic. What do you do with that? No one wants
00:10:22.080 to hear that. How do you handle that? In the eights class, one of the eights cards, of course,
00:10:26.320 eight of sorts right and i'm telling my students i'm preparing them and it's complex because we're
00:10:32.100 not licensed therapists or practitioners but at the same time this type of therapeutic work and
00:10:36.780 working with people it's like that card comes up and absolutely like testifiably shows a history
00:10:42.620 of abuse in particular sexual abuse if that's coming up for for a client i tell them i have
00:10:47.840 to broach this with a client i'm not going to not touch that and or talk about that or venture into
00:10:54.300 that space and of course me too right like we all know someone or no who knows someone it's not many
00:11:00.900 degrees of separation to find that kind of history of abuse then where do you approach that how do
00:11:06.180 you talk about that and inviting my students to share the student that drew that card in particular
00:11:11.540 hadn't been as disclosing in the class space as much so i let that of course i wasn't gonna trigger
00:11:18.340 them but like i'm like you know i broach this with clients and so obviously in this class space we're
00:11:22.380 talking about it like anything that this brings up for you is welcome like we can hear it you can
00:11:26.560 bring it in that that card is about shame that card is about silencing so just even the shared
00:11:31.620 witness of being able to express it I think is sometimes it's also the divination is great for
00:11:36.640 processing things that have happened and that uh that confound our mind like why did this have to
00:11:45.140 happen and that's really complex but it's a lot that's a big question you reminded me that once
00:11:50.660 in my 20s I saw a tarot reader who told me that my mom had abused me and she hadn't so that was
00:11:58.460 sort of strange yeah and it sort of became a avenue for them to talk about their own experience
00:12:05.640 and they felt like I was a safe person as a 22 year old to share that with which I think speaks
00:12:13.160 to where both of us were at that time in our lives but you reminded me yeah like of the
00:12:18.240 the sort of tricky relationship we can have with divination you know like i i was also i i was
00:12:26.500 playing cards for myself after i was diagnosed with cancer and they were so dark it was all
00:12:32.700 tower and death and devil and i was like well i'm done with this for a while
00:12:37.740 right not gonna play this game for a little bit it's too hard and i understood what it was
00:12:45.640 objectively. I was only at the beginning of going on an underworld walk and that's what was showing
00:12:51.300 me, but I really wasn't up for the symbols of it. What do you think about how, for example,
00:12:58.640 astrology is one that's troubling me more these days. How do we use astrology in empowering and
00:13:07.480 not ways that, as you say, can make us feel kind of trapped in our destinies?
00:13:12.300 yeah i mean i will say that the language that a diviner tarot reader or what have you like use
00:13:19.600 it's there's so much power in that i will never tell a person like you've been assaulted i would
00:13:24.420 never say that to a person i would reflect with the card what we're seeing clearly in the card
00:13:29.660 and like does that bring up anything you know like where do you see that maybe it's about the
00:13:34.020 restriction of voice you know maybe it's right and there's like other things happening but
00:13:38.320 But but but it's that that boldness to be like, so like this is I don't tell people about themselves like that, you know, I'll bring things up and ask questions and make it a conversation.
00:13:50.060 And then we thread it together.
00:13:52.620 But with such an empowering way to do it, I feel like we could have had a really interesting conversation if that reader had said that to me, because there are a lot of ways I could have engaged with that story.
00:14:04.220 Like you say, we all do have histories of abuse in our families.
00:14:07.180 but yeah sorry for interrupting no absolutely there are big shifts in language in terms of
00:14:12.460 like how that's gonna that's gonna go with approaching that same perhaps like subject
00:14:16.820 matter right and so you know so much of that how to use astrology i mean i think that if folks are
00:14:23.960 having anxiety around what's going to come there is like like check it like don't don't engage it
00:14:32.340 like paying attention to your own response and your capacity for handling the prophecy prediction
00:14:37.700 or weather that you see coming. You know, and it's always contextualized. I think sometimes people
00:14:42.080 also would try and take it as like waiting for the savior, the saving grace or like this. And
00:14:49.660 I'm for miracles. Don't get me wrong. They're certainly miracles. I'm pro-miracle too.
00:14:55.120 I'm pro-miracle. Absolutely. But in terms of being ungrounded or like, I don't know, it's a fine
00:15:02.280 line. It really is. It really does take experience. It takes falling flat on your ass and being
00:15:07.540 disappointed. It takes being so surprised where you're like, wow. Similar to the card or the 1.00
00:15:13.420 manifestation of a transit, you see the energies, but there's still the surprise of all these
00:15:18.380 different ways they can take expression. So being so sure that it's going to happen in this like
00:15:22.940 one particular avenue or this specific expression is egoic or, you know, it's hubristic. You still
00:15:30.200 don't know the sun went into taurus my first house squaring mars this is a heavy week
00:15:35.840 astrologically i had an allergic reaction and inflammation i was anticipating some family
00:15:40.240 tension and some family like potential arguments or things like that wasn't like stressed about it
00:15:45.900 i was just like okay right i was readying myself for that and then my whole body's inflamed and
00:15:50.160 that makes so much sense i see that in the astrology like you know what you know what i
00:15:54.140 mean um so i think one having a good relationship with an astrologer like that you trust knowing
00:16:02.120 that astrology it's knowing again that astrologers are human and that they have margins of error and
00:16:09.300 that you should know the tradition from which they're coming from that you should have an
00:16:13.460 ongoing relationship with them that sometimes the timing may be off and then at the same time
00:16:18.680 I personally love working with my Jyotish astrologer because they give remediation,
00:16:24.740 you know, and so there's a lot of Jyotish as a whole is oriented towards remediation.
00:16:29.820 I question how efficacious some of these remediations are because I'm like,
00:16:33.300 I've been doing this and you've been telling me, you know, but that giving someone something like,
00:16:39.880 and that's what I teach my students with cards as well, like one card for prognostication,
00:16:43.800 what's going on in one card for remediation, for discerning where the sphere of our agency
00:16:49.920 and our control to change as much as we can change for the better, while also learning
00:16:55.940 how to surrender circumstances that are far beyond our control.
00:16:58.860 And I think divination helps us to cope and process with what is traumatic.
00:17:06.460 Can you continue that thread into how divination can be useful for people who don't like quote
00:17:12.560 unquote, believe in magic? I would say from client experience, client work and client testimonials.
00:17:19.040 It is somewhat of a heightened therapeutic container, distinct from therapy, for sure.
00:17:25.560 I give suggestions, advice, or make certain predictions about things for clients that
00:17:31.460 they're asking me for. And I have ongoing relationships with clients, but not in the
00:17:36.520 frequency that one would meet with a therapist, right? But there's ways that we can unearth
00:17:41.100 certain dynamics via the cards or via the chart that family trauma that separation from mother
00:17:48.040 that thing with a partner or the potential for the career we can get there so much faster that
00:17:52.580 would take a lot of time that you can then take to your therapist right so i think in a therapeutic
00:17:57.120 dialogic um kind of like psychic x-ray way that the divination can help and i do think again that's
00:18:05.420 where you want to make sure that you're you're seeing who you're working with in their background
00:18:08.680 Because a lot of people try and manipulate power and fuck you up with saying certain predictions or how you are and doing this kind of characterology, you know, again, rather than looking at them as circumstantial, like how this person's circumstances are embedded in like a manifold expression that can be brought forth.
00:18:28.860 And also having like a stance of like, and it's hard, don't get me wrong, but there's not a Pollyanna stance at all, but just the sense of like a real deep spiritual rooting for the history of suffering and trauma that we've all endured, like that there is an arc of spiritual evolution.
00:18:47.220 There is an arc of soul development that we've all agreed to on some fundamental level to incarnate here.
00:18:52.680 people come at crossroads to divination. People come when their doctors are not seeing their
00:18:58.520 humanity, when their church has failed them, when they're all alone. And so in that vulnerable space
00:19:03.520 when you're cracked open, I think is also when you open a bit more.
00:19:09.820 And in terms of you use the phrase unearthing dynamics, and I think that really relates to
00:19:14.820 this question I want to ask you about, how does divination relate to decolonization?
00:19:20.940 how are those two things enmeshed beyond or as part of the unearthing of dynamics oh my gosh so
00:19:30.180 it's that's that's you know the the thrust of my work it's like i'm going you know what i mean i'm
00:19:35.300 just like it's always each card has so much um is well being able to locate and so you know with
00:19:44.480 what i teach my students there's knowing this how to visually read the symbolism of a card or of the
00:19:49.640 chart, right? There's just like that simple, like strong visual reading skills that we have to have
00:19:54.240 first, right? And then adding significations. And for what the red read does, like shining the red
00:20:01.740 light onto it, which is reading, like we can apply any interpretive lens to any text. And so I think
00:20:08.080 thinking as well, for people aren't magical, this is an art exercise. This is reading art critically,
00:20:14.340 right? You can apply a feminist lens, you can apply a queer lens, you can apply all different
00:20:19.260 lenses. And so applying that lens of colonization or decolonization to the text that is tarot or
00:20:26.140 the chart unearths all these possibilities where when you're reading for a client, you can have
00:20:29.760 the social critique where you're seeing like, that is misogyny. That is misogynoir. That is
00:20:35.460 classism. That's internalized ableism. Where are these things rooted from? Where's the history of
00:20:39.740 these things? Of course, goes to colonization. They become regionally contextualized with like
00:20:44.280 my clients. I think about the two of wands or the three of wands is always one where I think of as
00:20:50.060 cultural embassy and how it's important for clients to understand their own cultural background so as
00:20:57.820 to not be ethnocentric. I have students and clients all over the world. So of course that
00:21:03.280 expression of colonization, the histories of white supremacy are going to differently shape their 0.99
00:21:10.040 experience, but we can still understand a larger grouping under that fucked up umbrella of white 0.97
00:21:15.840 supremacy and colonization. And so the cards can help show that. We all have the same transits. 0.98
00:21:21.240 It's like the weather, not we all have, but you know what I mean? The trends are happening to us
00:21:25.140 all. And I'm like, in the way I can see, oh, there's that white man in you. And it's showing
00:21:29.980 up in this part of your life. And that's what I work on. A part of decolonization is also
00:21:36.420 decolonizing our spiritual tools, reconnecting to our relationship to the earth, reconnecting
00:21:41.600 to our ability to conjure, to commune, to fortify a faith that is revolutionary.
00:21:51.020 So I'd say that.
00:21:53.720 And what advice do you have for those of us who feel like we're constantly contending
00:21:59.520 with our own internalized classism, sexism?
00:22:04.200 How do you contend with your own internalized isms and how can we contend with our internalized isms?
00:22:11.420 That's another point for Descartes.
00:22:14.840 A major aspect, of course, is self-reflexivity. 1.00
00:22:17.440 You got to know what your shit is. 0.99
00:22:18.960 You got to know what your isms are and how those are related and be vigilant about it. 1.00
00:22:23.840 I think it's a constant process of learning.
00:22:25.840 It's a constant process of taking that as a meaningful aim and commitment and discipline.
00:22:31.640 You just have to be committed to keeping that in check.
00:22:35.840 And I think being willing to make sacrifices and changes, it's uncomfortable.
00:22:43.400 It's uncomfortable and it requires a lot.
00:22:45.820 I think people are hard to sacrifice some sense of selfish comfort around whatever way
00:22:53.060 they benefit from those systems differentially and don't benefit from them working against
00:22:57.280 a larger self-interest.
00:22:58.280 I would say having a strong community, a practice of self-reflexivity, having a therapist or a reader, a diviner that you are in relationship with, me having my friends that I'm intentionally cultivating, that I feel so inspired to be friends with is a big part of that.
00:23:17.460 when you connect to your roots and our complicated inheritances, that's not something that we can
00:23:27.080 just escape. Either way, you're going to be pulled back into it. So I think that there is that sense
00:23:31.660 of not being in denial or avoidance about what the work needs to do and not trying to solve it
00:23:39.580 all. Like Tina Turner, we don't need another hero. We just need you to be a person among persons.
00:23:44.860 We need you to reclaim some sense of humanity and we need you to at least grieve.
00:23:48.640 I think so much of the work is grieving, processing and grieving and releasing so that you can open yourself to some new perspective, some new relationship.
00:24:01.440 You mentioned strong community, you mentioned grief, and this is the year of the hermit.
00:24:07.320 I've been asking a lot of tarot readers about their interpretation of the hermit.
00:24:12.500 But almost every single one of them, for them, The Hermit has been about building a strong community, which is kind of the opposite of what you would think of The Hermit Year.
00:24:23.300 Do you have Red Tarot in front of you?
00:24:26.340 I do.
00:24:27.140 Because I was going to read a couple paragraphs, and I'm so glad that you got to do your own narration for your audiobook.
00:24:34.940 It's so wonderful to hear your voice reading these words.
00:24:38.360 So instead of me doing it, if you could please flip to page 335 and start with the last paragraph, The Path of Redemption, and just read as much as you want to at this sort of ironic hermit.
00:24:58.800 Thank you so much.
00:25:00.060 I'm honored and honored to have the copy here.
00:25:02.460 Yes, chapter 9 on page 335, The Hermit.
00:25:06.420 So this is what I've written.
00:25:07.520 the path of redemption the hermit walks is one in which the suffering we have endured is not for
00:25:12.960 nothing the deep struggles we inherit are a burden the hermit makes into a well of compassion
00:25:18.100 patience wisdom and understanding a healing tonic they extend to others that wouldn't have been
00:25:23.820 possible without persevering through such painful adversity the hermit is when our history is no
00:25:29.460 longer an open festering wound but a scar a scar i can touch and tell stories about from the gifts
00:25:35.740 of the hermit, I use the tarot. I write this book to explore the interchange of possibilities
00:25:40.540 offered by compatible spirits across different knowledges, traditions, and histories.
00:25:49.000 Now, talk to me about that in relation to the year of the hermit. How does that echo throughout
00:25:56.260 2025? I think the walk. You know, we all have to walk our walk. We have to walk our path.
00:26:03.220 and there are thorns in the path
00:26:06.260 and we may twist our ankle and break our leg
00:26:08.500 and get to this point, 0.99
00:26:09.560 but I think the hermit keeps going and keeps walking.
00:26:12.500 It's often an elder that's pictured in the card 0.83
00:26:15.200 and you're like, grandma, what are you doing out there?
00:26:16.960 Like, grandpa, come back, it's cold out there.
00:26:18.740 What do you mean you're taking this long walk?
00:26:20.160 You know, it's this real sense of maturity.
00:26:23.000 I think that is cultivated from still standing,
00:26:28.140 from still going, from still breathing,
00:26:30.500 from surviving.
00:26:33.220 From having an ability to commune when you've been in the room when someone has died, you know there is a real faith that permeates, a real sense of more than the mundane, material, hard world.
00:26:46.100 There is a real spiritual connection.
00:26:49.060 I think that the hermit is guided by ancestors, by the starlight.
00:26:54.180 They're led by their own light in that lantern, by their own sense of faith, trying to show the way for others.
00:26:59.940 that distinction of having a scar is something you can tell stories about maybe that you're proud
00:27:05.400 of in the sense that it is a scar now and not an open festering wound that it's evidence of
00:27:09.940 your healing it's evidence of your resiliency of what's happened to you i don't have tattoos i only
00:27:15.380 have scars personally my family all has to i love tattoos but i just have scars you know myself
00:27:23.220 i think the hermit is a real interesting one to be in this year to shift from the strength year
00:27:29.920 It's a hermit year.
00:27:30.860 I think the hermit is really having me slow and walk a slow, steady, fortified kind of pace with trying to be as prudent as I can be.
00:27:41.720 Yeah. 0.69
00:27:42.020 You know?
00:27:42.880 Yeah.
00:27:43.320 A lot of people get hung up on that word hermit, but they're missing the lantern.
00:27:48.360 And to me, it's the lantern that's really the hermit.
00:27:52.860 It's not hermitage.
00:27:54.480 It's definitely not solitude.
00:27:56.180 It's that lantern.
00:27:57.740 It's that light.
00:27:59.200 Hmm. It's being enveloped. I think like hermit with that. Yes, people have, I don't know, like the common connotation of that word is like this envelopment into God or the divine or the goddess or the mystery or what have you.
00:28:13.940 And I think it makes so much sense again is like just circling back like in total darkness when there's no sense of a way forward or no clarity and there's just confusion and you feel alone or you feel disconnected that the hermit emerges and is it's like the darkness being evidence of being so intimately close to the divine.
00:28:38.180 And I do quote across a book like Father Ian Matthew, who I love.
00:28:42.360 They're writing about not shoving light into your face in this spiritual bypassing way.
00:28:46.520 Like, if you just book with me, we're going to be fantastic and you'll be rich and find love.
00:28:50.980 And you know what I mean?
00:28:52.060 It'll all be well.
00:28:52.880 You don't have to think about that.
00:28:54.060 You know what I mean?
00:28:55.320 I'm the one who's like, we are in the dark.
00:28:58.280 Like, you know what I mean?
00:28:59.300 We already are in the dark.
00:29:00.460 But there's a lantern there.
00:29:02.500 There's starlight there.
00:29:03.600 that hermit is like if I fix my eyes on this lantern if I learn how to carry this lantern
00:29:10.720 if I learn how to respect the wisdom that my ancestors have given me that the divine is giving
00:29:16.060 me and walk that path slowly and humbly and I tell others it's like you can follow me if you
00:29:21.840 want I'm just following this light like you the hermit is not interested in mass followers he's
00:29:25.680 not interested in audience he's not necessarily trying to tell other people what to do or where
00:29:30.060 to go or how to be. He's simply trying to hear for himself or themselves or herself where
00:29:35.820 the next step is for them. What the right next step for them to take is to be in alignment,
00:29:41.900 to feel that they can respect themselves, to feel that they're walking somewhere
00:29:45.220 that offers sanctuary and respite. But fulfillment, they're also not going to take the easy path
00:29:51.720 because everyone else is parting it up under fluorescent lights. You know what I mean? He's
00:29:57.560 like i'm trying to go where i am meant to be going and so i think the hermit offers does
00:30:03.680 definitely offer us much wisdom at this point for sure do you want to pull a card for us and
00:30:11.600 i'll pull a card for you yes amy do you have a third deck there or do you want to just watch
00:30:18.940 this unfold i'm gonna watch it unfold okay fantastic thank you so much i'm so excited okay
00:30:25.760 turned right over
00:30:55.760 Let me know when you're ready.
00:30:58.980 I'm ready.
00:30:59.820 I filled this card for you and showed it to Amy while your eyes were closed.
00:31:02.980 We both laughed at how perfect it is.
00:31:04.820 You got Audre Lorde.
00:31:08.300 Yes.
00:31:10.440 Mythologize.
00:31:11.680 Mythologize.
00:31:12.240 Make myth of your life, lovely one.
00:31:15.040 We wrote, Audre Lorde, Black lesbian warrior poet, feminist essayist, and civil rights activist,
00:31:20.160 radically opens pathways to intersectionality, just like you.
00:31:24.220 So, she created the genre of biomythography.
00:31:28.240 She invites us to craft our mythic lives.
00:31:30.440 In her 1980 essay, Age, Race, Class, and Sex, Audrey writes,
00:31:34.420 as a 49-year-old black lesbian feminist socialist mother of two,
00:31:37.960 including one boy and a member of interracial couple,
00:31:40.900 I usually find myself a part of some group defined as other,
00:31:44.320 deviant, inferior, or just plain wrong.
00:31:47.320 In her poem, Equinox, she writes,
00:31:49.040 we must be very strong and love each other in order to go on living.
00:31:53.600 Audrey Lorde summons you to the fertile meeting places of our otherness.
00:31:57.940 Be very strong.
00:31:59.420 Love each other.
00:32:00.720 Make your life mythic.
00:32:02.180 Thank you, Audrey.
00:32:03.520 Thank you.
00:32:04.640 I love y'all's deck and your work and the podcast.
00:32:07.940 It's a blessing and an honor.
00:32:09.000 And I think that, again, for me, focusing on bringing that hermit, there's so much wisdom there for us.
00:32:14.860 There's so much wisdom in the moment and the things we are all pouring from our soul to create and receive. 0.98
00:32:20.040 I have to be disciplined and fortified about centering that in my life
00:32:24.840 rather than the darkness and dismay.
00:32:27.460 And that is a daily effort and a daily practice.
00:32:30.080 And I know Audre Lorde knows about that.
00:32:32.440 The card I drew for y'all that popped right out is the Ace of Wands.
00:32:36.020 Wow.
00:32:37.900 It's a very big Ace of Wands.
00:32:39.660 It's like literally on fire, this Ace of Wands, which you don't always see.
00:32:43.080 This is from the Fyodor Pavlov Tarot.
00:32:45.600 And so I'll read a bit from Red Tarot as well.
00:32:48.200 Always read from Red Tarot.
00:32:49.540 that's my go-to i really appreciate that thank you for thank you for that i mean i have to tell
00:32:55.140 you i read from it all the time in missing witches coven circles i think it just it's like the the
00:33:01.780 book the interpretations that like gives me the most like grounding and clarity and like it sends
00:33:08.140 me excitedly looking at authors real real deep medicine not not not blowing smoke deeply love
00:33:14.140 that book no i i appreciate that because i get like i said complex about how certain readers
00:33:20.620 like try and police i've always been policed for my intellect and my expression writing and my
00:33:26.620 syntax and my diction i also recognize my own faults in terms of reading it very critically
00:33:30.500 i'm happy to have readers like you and for anyone that it's helped it's a gift and honor but anyhow
00:33:35.520 the ace of wands for you okay and there's a there's a go back to how annoyed i am
00:33:40.380 from the opening so the epigraph thus because of the way in which domestic myths are transmitted
00:33:48.220 people often never learn that they are myths people become submerged in their viewpoints
00:33:53.760 prisoners of their own traditions they readily confuse attitudes towards reality proclamations
00:33:58.880 of value with reality itself statements of fact failing to see their own myths they consider all
00:34:05.360 other myths false. They do not understand that the truth of all myths is existential and not
00:34:10.720 necessarily theoretical. That is, they forget that myths are true to the extent that they are
00:34:15.280 effective. In a sense, myths are self-fulfilling prophecies. They create facts out of the values
00:34:20.860 they propound. Thinking we are superior to other creatures, for instance, we set ourselves up as
00:34:25.980 such and use them ruthlessly. People that think of themselves as brothers to the beasts live with
00:34:31.320 them in harmony and respect. So I just got to say that, like, from this connection to mythologizing
00:34:37.300 our lives to this being the opening epigraph, like, here we are, label me. It's like, come on.
00:34:44.140 I'll read a little bit more. That was just the epigraph, but I'll say white culture has an 0.86
00:34:48.960 uncanny ability to mystify reality among people of color. Without a clear sense of our own histories, 0.98
00:34:54.060 we are vulnerable to the delusional and destructive myths of white supremacy.
00:34:57.300 As you realize an ideology has been imposed upon you, anger mixes with confusion.
00:35:02.760 White worldviews maintain dominance so long as they shape the consciousness of the masses. 0.77
00:35:08.760 We are blind until the fire touches us. 0.88
00:35:11.140 The Ace of Wands arrives erect, and before us is an absolute reality, and it's self-stimulating.
00:35:19.500 With the Ace of Wands, we write with a reason, a sparked interest, a cause.
00:35:23.960 With it, we make myth to achieve self-determination. 0.98
00:35:26.900 The penis is a phallus, but the phallus is not necessarily the penis. 0.96
00:35:30.080 The wand is a phallus rather than the penis, 0.96
00:35:32.000 the active rather than the receptive symbol of power and fertility
00:35:34.620 that can be wielded by any, regardless of sex or gender.
00:35:38.040 The staff is a symbol of external power and authority,
00:35:40.760 but it only appears as we understand how we have been complicit in our own subordination.
00:35:45.560 Fire's animacy lends itself to sudden inspiration.
00:35:48.760 Fire is all-knowing, possesses every prophecy.
00:35:51.220 The ace of wands is then a divinatory scepter.
00:35:53.920 Burn a white fire, and the past will be purified.
00:35:56.260 it's amazing to me that both the cards you pulled were this mythology sentiment okay so
00:36:06.600 to sort of close this portal to close this circle i have a giant question if you could
00:36:15.420 maybe close your eyes if that feels comfortable for you and take a second to use your imagination
00:36:21.840 or to mythologize what a re-indigenized world might look like.
00:36:30.040 If you could give us a couple sentences of something
00:36:33.560 that can become for us a hermit lantern
00:36:36.940 that we can look toward as a possible reality.
00:36:41.020 I do see deconstructed buildings that have so much natural overgrowth
00:36:53.620 that fences aren't there, broken down.
00:37:01.980 There's birds in the air.
00:37:04.940 A lot of birds, again, in the air.
00:37:07.300 people perhaps are like somewhat migratory like I see people moving in a reclaimed city space
00:37:17.780 in particular I get a vision of this overgrown cityscape I feel people crying together not
00:37:27.240 simply from grief in the sense of grief, yes, but relief and a ritual offering.
00:37:39.960 I see there not being a stress of being on a timetable in particular.
00:37:47.800 I see there being like a real moving at a slower pace.
00:37:51.520 and that, paradoxically, it's very fertile
00:37:55.520 and very feckoned, moving at that pace.
00:37:59.600 I just see people embracing each other
00:38:02.640 and communing with each other,
00:38:05.980 and that's represented by the resurgence of the ecology
00:38:09.600 and the resurgence of, in particular, birds in the sky
00:38:13.640 just watching murmuration.
00:38:16.600 murmuration perhaps blasting out of the speaker some tina turner yes i can really
00:38:28.440 dig my feet and hands into the idea of human murmuration us all moving together as one shape
00:38:39.220 that is in communication as we move.
00:38:43.440 This is a vision that I can very much get into.
00:38:47.860 That murmuration, it's distinctive of movement
00:38:50.900 and this ability to migrate,
00:38:52.760 but also being connected and like communally psychic, you know?
00:38:56.820 And the tears being tears of relief.
00:39:02.300 Okay, tell our listeners how they can best support you.
00:39:06.840 Thank you. No, I appreciate it.
00:39:08.760 Yeah, I love y'all so much.
00:39:10.280 Y'all can, any listener can find me at theredread.com, R-E-D-R-E-A-D, theredread.substack.com,
00:39:19.500 which I really, like, I'm on Instagram as well, but, like, you know, shadowbanned and, like, get, like, 2% of, like, people seeing whatever I post there.
00:39:28.640 Right.
00:39:31.220 You get 2%?
00:39:32.740 No, literally.
00:39:34.160 So y'all should support authors by subscribing to their newsletter list.
00:39:38.580 I write there. I have my class announcements there. You'll see a whole host of offerings
00:39:43.340 and classes. You can buy Red Tarot anywhere you get books. There's an audio version as well. In my
00:39:49.740 biased opinion, there is a real fullness to having both the hard copy and the audiobook version. I
00:39:56.760 get that feedback a lot from people who do have both versions. It felt like the full artistic
00:40:00.460 expression for me, having the visual alongside the music. You know what I mean? When I recorded
00:40:05.320 the audio it felt full like it needed this as well lyrics and music yes yes and your reading is
00:40:13.020 fantastic you are such an excellent narrator it's really beautiful to hear the words in your voice
00:40:19.380 instead of the voice that voice conjured in my head when i'm reading your words in text thank
00:40:23.880 you it's always been a dream of mine since watching mrs doubtfire to be a voice actor
00:40:27.400 we're like he opens up and i was like i want to do that one day so if anyone's listening you know
00:40:33.760 wants to hire me to be I'm down you want me to narrate your book I'm down but uh no but thank
00:40:40.460 you so much thank y'all so much it's an honor and a gift to just spend any time and space with you
00:40:45.660 and to be on a label I'm humbled together so y'all yeah thank you so fun to be together again
00:40:54.740 I really appreciate your time and the way the universe tricked us into hanging out
00:41:00.020 I'm really into it and I felt what you said about getting policed for that language I can imagine
00:41:09.800 how that would happen I have seen versions of that in different spaces where a friend gets 1.00
00:41:17.620 shot down for asking the same question that I could have asked because she's black and so it 1.00
00:41:22.720 seems like she's troublemaking for you to be able to write in that high theory incantatory 1.00
00:41:28.940 prose that is very much in the same lyrical stream as Deleuze and Guattari and the really
00:41:36.980 advanced theorists and for you to be critiqued for that because someone doesn't see the world
00:41:43.480 that you're writing in I just want to witness that how wrong and infuriating that is because
00:41:49.940 you do some real good work my friend thank you I was always that thing of like just make the work
00:41:55.700 The right audience will find it evidently. And knowing that sometimes work takes however long to get its reception and not even like I don't feel entitled about it being received away. It's just the sense of like, I also write. That's a paradoxical thing, writing and sharing. I write for me against histories of policing language and also want it to reach the humanity of my reader as I explore my own.
00:42:17.760 yeah it's a very rare combination extremely clever and extremely kind and i think you
