00:00:00.000 Good evening, dear listeners, and welcome to a special Pinecone short episode of Rowan
00:00:19.400 and Pine. I'm your host, Niamh, and tonight we peer back through history to the Victorian
00:00:24.680 era exploring the enigmatic world of the macabre victorian christmas you can think of this as a
00:00:32.580 primer for our live event which is taking place this time next week actually saturday december
00:00:38.340 2nd that's if you're listening to this on release day and it'll also come in handy for some content
00:00:44.980 that we still have brewing
00:00:54.680 While it's a common perception that Victorian Christmas celebrations were somewhat morbid,
00:01:03.040 it's important to note that this characterisation is not actually universally agreed upon.
00:01:08.180 The Victorian era spanned from 1837 to 1901.
00:01:13.540 It was marked by complex interplay of social, cultural and economic factors.
00:01:19.060 and Christmas celebrations varied widely among different social classes and regions.
00:01:27.300 This point in history was significant and transformative for Britain in particular.
00:01:32.360 Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837 at the age of just 18
00:01:36.440 and she ruled until her death in 1901.
00:01:39.460 Her reign is one of the longest in British history
00:01:42.660 and of course is synonymous with the broader Victorian era.
00:01:49.060 It was the peak of the Industrial Revolution which brought about significant technological advancements, urbanisation and changes in manufacturing and transportation.
00:02:01.040 Factories emerged, there was a shift from agrarian economies into industrial ones, not to mention those social changes like the rise of the middle class, the expansion of suffrage.
00:02:13.220 There were also ongoing debates about social issues such as child labour and workers' rights.
00:02:19.060 all of this was backdrop by the zenith of the colonial period the expansion of the british
00:02:26.760 empire included territories in africa asia and the pacific the sun never sets on the british
00:02:33.880 empire that phrase became a symbol of its vast reach literature art and science flourished
00:02:42.240 renowned authors like charles dickens charlotte bronte and thomas hardy and the period saw the
00:02:49.020 emergence of scientific advancements including Charles Darwin's theory of evolution as well as
00:02:54.280 improvements in medicine and sanitation. Victorians ushered in technological advancements like the
00:03:01.200 railway system and the spread of telegraph communication and there was a new era of
00:03:05.700 architectural styles such as gothic revival and Queen Anne. This was also where the rise of
00:03:11.400 interior design came in as its own distinct discipline. Of course we wouldn't speak about
00:03:17.400 here if it wasn't for the fashion characterised by elaborate yet modest clothing for both men and
00:03:22.720 women. Think corsets, crinolines and bustles, tailored jackets and trousers for the men.
00:03:30.800 Following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria's mourning deeply influenced
00:03:36.540 societal attitudes towards death and mourning practices, as well as those iconic fashions.
00:03:42.460 all of this combined bestowed a dark melancholy aura to the age and even the jolliest time of
00:03:50.480 the year wasn't spared victorian christmas celebrations were far from the glittering
00:04:03.620 festivities we have today you can picture fog-covered cities shadows cast by lamplight
00:04:09.980 chill in the air and tales of the supernatural whispered in hushed thoughts gothic influences
00:04:17.020 from the literature and art we talked about earlier seeped into the festive season dark
00:04:22.780 folk traditions the evolution of santa claus from a more serious figure and artistic representations
00:04:29.300 of christmas with a touch of melancholy contributed to the perception of macabre victorian christmas
00:04:36.820 across the atlantic a different tapestry of christmas traditions was being woven
00:04:47.780 in america the 19th century saw the emergence of a more secular celebration
00:04:53.140 with clement clark mirrors a visit from saint nicholas contributing to the modern image of
00:04:58.400 santa claus in ireland christmas was a time of rich tradition and also superstition people would
00:05:05.280 light candles in the window to symbolise their hospitality, and it was believed that opening
00:05:09.680 the door at midnight would welcome in the Holy Family. In Germany, the tradition of Christkind,
00:05:20.220 a celestial being similar to an angel, was celebrated, yet in the depths of Germanic
00:05:25.680 folklore. Tales of, you guessed it, the sinister Krampus, a horned figure who punished naughty
00:05:32.740 children added a chilling layer to the festivities. We can turn our gaze northward then to Scandinavia
00:05:40.200 where Christmas in the 19th century was a time of ancient rituals with a sprinkling of Norse
00:05:46.320 mythology. The Yule goat, a creature with roots in pre-Christian tradition, was said to roam the
00:05:52.240 countryside embodying both the benevolent and malevolent aspects of the season.
00:05:56.820 but back in victorian england as the gas lamps flickered and ghost stories unfolded there were
00:06:05.360 similar tales as those ones that were echoing in those far-reaching corners of the world
00:06:10.000 being immortalized on the page
00:06:11.760 our journey through literature begins with the most iconic tale of the season charles dickens
00:06:21.880 A Christmas Carol. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge haunted by ghosts on Christmas Eve is a masterpiece.
00:06:28.420 It seamlessly blends the spirit of Christmas with a touch of caution and morbidity. But you
00:06:34.080 might not know that Dickens wasn't the only one infusing Christmas with a ghostly touch.
00:06:39.900 Other lesser-known authors of the time wove chilling narratives into the festive season.
00:06:45.700 Oscar Wilde, who was known and loved for his wit, gifted us with The Canterville Ghost
00:06:51.600 In this tale, an American family encounters a ghost in their English mansion,
00:06:55.740 setting the stage for a clash between the pragmatic new world and the spectral old world.
00:07:03.160 Fergus Hume, a Victorian author not quite as widely remembered, gifted us The Ghost's Touch.
00:07:09.240 This tale unfolds in the midst of Christmas,
00:07:11.860 where mysterious occurrences and spectral encounters create an atmosphere of suspense and unease.
00:07:17.480 and then there's number 90 by bm croaker a tale that thrusts us into an old house over christmas
00:07:25.600 where strange and unsettling events unfurl leaving the protagonist to unravel the mysteries that
00:07:31.080 surround them but maybe you want an example or a taste of what's to come next week pull your
00:07:38.140 chairs closer stoke the fire and let us delve into the eerie world of am bridges smee as retold
00:07:45.940 by Rosemary Border. No, said Jackson, with a shy little smile. I'm sorry, I won't play hide and
00:07:59.220 seek. It was Christmas Eve and there were 14 of us in the house. We had had a good dinner and we
00:08:05.280 were all in the mood for fun and games. All, that is, except Jackson. When somebody suggested hide
00:08:10.980 and seek, there were loud shouts of agreement. Jackson's refusal was the only one. It was not
00:08:17.580 like Jackson to refuse to play a game. Aren't you feeling well? Someone asked. I'm perfectly all
00:08:23.160 right, thank you, he said. But, he added, with a smile that softened his refusal but did not change
00:08:28.760 it. I'm still not playing hide and seek. Why not? Someone asked. He hesitated for a moment before
00:08:37.140 replying. I sometimes go and stay at a house where a girl was killed. She was playing hide
00:08:43.600 and seek in the dark. She didn't know the house very well. There was a door that led
00:08:47.340 to the servant's staircase. When she was chased, she thought the door led to a bedroom. She
00:08:52.820 opened the door and jumped and landed at the bottom of the stairs. She broke her neck,
00:08:58.120 of course. We all looked serious. Mrs. Fernley said, how terrible. And were you there when
00:09:05.360 it happened? Jackson shook his head sadly. No, he said. But I was there when something else happened.
00:09:12.100 Something worse. What could be worse than that? This was, said Jackson. He hesitated for a moment
00:09:19.360 and then he said, I wonder if any of you have ever played a game called Smee?
00:09:24.880 It's much better than Hide and Seek. The name comes from It's Me, of course. Perhaps you'd like
00:09:31.760 to play it instead of hide and seek? Let me tell you the rules of the game. Every player is given
00:09:36.920 a sheet of paper. All the sheets except one are blank. On the last sheet of paper is written
00:09:42.780 Smee. Nobody knows who Smee is except Smee himself or herself. You turn out the lights and Smee goes
00:09:51.260 quietly out of the room and hides. After a time the others go off to search for Smee but of course
00:09:57.240 they don't know who they're looking for. When one player meets another he challenges him by saying
00:10:02.880 Smee. The other player answers Smee and they continue searching. But the real Smee doesn't
00:10:09.880 answer when someone challenges. The second player stays quietly beside him. Presently they will be
00:10:16.760 discovered by a third player. He will challenge and receive no answer and he will join the first
00:10:21.720 too. This goes on until all the players are in the same place. The last one to find Smee has to pay
00:10:28.420 a forfeit. It's a good, noisy, amusing game. In a big house, it often takes a long time for everyone
00:10:35.440 to find Smee. Perhaps you'd like to try. I'll happily pay my forfeit and sit here by the fire
00:10:40.300 while you play. It sounds a good game, I remarked. Have you played it too, Jackson? Yes, he answered.
00:10:47.120 I played it in the house that I was telling you about
00:10:49.540 She was there, the girl who broke
00:10:52.040 No, no, said someone else
00:10:53.800 He told us he wasn't there when she broke her neck
00:10:56.420 Jackson thought for a moment
00:10:59.180 I don't know if she was there or not
00:11:02.880 I'm afraid she was
00:11:05.020 I know that there were 13 of us playing the game
00:11:08.020 And there were only 12 people in the house
00:11:10.920 And I didn't know the dead girl's name
00:11:13.020 When I heard that whispered name in the dark
00:11:16.720 It didn't worry me.
00:11:19.140 But I tell you, I am never going to play that kind of game again.
00:11:23.320 It made me quite nervous for a long time.
00:11:26.340 I prefer to pay my forfeit at once.
00:11:30.580 We all stared at him.
00:11:32.380 His words did not make sense at all.
00:11:34.700 Tim Vyse was the kindest man in the world.
00:11:36.960 He smiled at us all.
00:11:38.640 This sounds like an interesting story, he said.
00:11:41.280 Come on, Jackson, you can tell it to us instead of paying a forfeit.
00:11:44.020 very well said Jackson and here is his story
00:11:49.280 have you met the Sangstons they're cousins of mine and they live in Surrey five years ago they
00:11:57.300 invited me to go and spend Christmas with them it was an old house with lots of unnecessary
00:12:02.220 passages and staircases a stranger could get lost in it quite easily well I went down for Christmas
00:12:10.240 Violet Sangston promised me that I knew most of the other guests.
00:12:13.940 Unfortunately, I couldn't get away from my job until Christmas Eve.
00:12:18.360 All the other guests had arrived there the previous day.
00:12:21.120 I was the last to arrive and I was only just in time for dinner.
00:12:25.160 I said hello to everyone I knew and Violet Sangston introduced me to the people I didn't know.
00:12:30.440 Then it was time to go in to dinner.
00:12:32.560 That is perhaps why I didn't hear the name of a tall, dark-haired, handsome girl whom I hadn't met before.
00:12:38.380 everyone was in rather a hurry and I'm always bad at catching people's names 0.71
00:12:43.520 she looked cold and clever she didn't look at all friendly but she looked interesting
00:12:48.340 and I wondered who she was I didn't ask because I was sure that someone would speak to her by name
00:12:53.520 during the meal unluckily however I was a long way from her at the table I was sitting next to
00:13:00.200 Mrs Gorman and as usual Mrs Gorman was being very bright and amusing her conversation is always
00:13:06.380 worth listening to and I completely forgot to ask the name of the dark proud girl.
00:13:12.440 There were 12 of us including the Sangstons themselves. We were all young or trying to be
00:13:17.680 young. Jack and Violet Sangston were the oldest and their 17 year old son Reggie was the youngest.
00:13:24.120 It was Reggie who suggested Smee when the talk turned to games. He told us the rules of the game
00:13:29.900 just as I've described them to you. Jack Sangston warned us all if you're going to play games in
00:13:35.600 the dark, he said, please be careful of the back stairs on the first floor. A door leads to them
00:13:40.900 and I've often thought about taking the door off. In the dark, a stranger to the house could think
00:13:45.520 they were walking into a room. A girl really did break her neck on those stairs. I asked how it 0.98
00:13:51.820 happened. It was about 10 years ago before we came here. There was a party and they were playing hide
00:13:57.820 and seek. The girl was looking for somewhere to hide. She heard somebody coming and ran along the 0.92
00:14:03.600 passage to get away. She opened the door, thinking it led to a bedroom. She planned to hide in there
00:14:08.960 until the seeker had gone. Unfortunately, it was the door that led to the back stairs. 0.86
00:14:14.860 She fell straight down to the bottom of the stairs and she was dead when they picked her up.
00:14:20.040 We all promised to be careful. Mrs Gorman even made a little joke about living to be 90.
00:14:25.300 You see, none of us had known the poor girl and we did not want to feel sad on Christmas Eve.
00:14:33.600 Well, we all started the game immediately after dinner.
00:14:37.140 Young Reggie Sangston went round making sure all the lights were off,
00:14:40.920 except the ones in the servants' rooms and in the sitting room where we were.
00:14:45.340 We then prepared 12 sheets of paper.
00:14:48.300 11 of them were blank and one of them had Smee written on it.
00:14:51.400 Reggie mixed them up and then we each took one.
00:14:54.160 The person who got the paper with Smee on it had to hide.
00:14:57.320 I looked at mine and I saw that it was blank.
00:14:59.620 A moment later, all the electric lights went out.
00:15:01.780 in the darkness I heard someone moving very quietly to the door
00:15:05.420 after a minute somebody blew a whistle and we all rushed to the door
00:15:11.520 I had no idea who was Smee
00:15:13.200 for five or ten minutes we were all rushing up and down passages
00:15:16.680 in and out of rooms challenging each other and answering Smee? Smee
00:15:20.920 after a while the noise died down and I guessed that someone had found Smee
00:15:26.820 after a time I found a group of people all sitting on some narrow stairs
00:15:31.440 I challenged and received no answer. So Smee was there. I hurriedly joined the group. Presently
00:15:37.500 two more players arrived. Each one was hurrying to avoid being last. Jack Sangston was last and
00:15:43.540 was given a forfeit. I think we're all here now aren't we? He remarked. He lit a match and looked
00:15:49.460 up the staircase and began to count. Nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen he said and then laughed.
00:15:57.080 that's silly there's one too many the match went out and he lit another and began to count
00:16:02.560 he got as far as 12 and he looked puzzled there are 13 people here he said i haven't counted 0.86
00:16:09.560 myself yet oh nonsense i laughed you probably began with yourself and now you want to count
00:16:15.120 yourself twice his son took out his electric torch it gave better light than the matches
00:16:20.580 and we all began to count of course there were 12 of us jack laughed well he said i was
00:16:27.020 sure I counted 13 twice. From halfway up the stairs, Violet Sangston spoke nervously. I thought
00:16:34.860 there was somebody sitting two steps above me. Have you moved, Captain Ransom? The captain said
00:16:41.700 that he hadn't, but I thought there was somebody sitting between Mrs Sangston and me. Just for a
00:16:47.420 moment, there was an uncomfortable something in the air. A cold finger seemed to touch us all.
00:16:54.260 for that moment we all felt that something odd and unpleasant had just happened
00:17:00.140 and it was likely to happen again then we laughed at ourselves and at each other and we felt normal
00:17:07.540 again there were only 12 of us and that was that still laughing we marched back to the sitting
00:17:12.520 room to begin again this time i was me violet sangston found me while i was searching for a
00:17:19.840 hiding place. That game didn't last long. Soon there were 12 people and the game was
00:17:24.460 over. Violet felt cold and wanted her jacket. Her husband Jack went up to their bedroom
00:17:29.520 to fetch it. As soon as he'd gone, Reggie touched me on the arm. He was looking pale
00:17:35.120 and sick. Quick, he whispered. I've got to talk to you. Something horrible has happened.
00:17:41.960 We went into the breakfast room. What's the matter? I asked. I don't know. You were Smee
00:17:47.400 last time, weren't you? Well, of course, I didn't know who Smee was. While mother and the others ran
00:17:52.520 to the west side of the house and found you, I went east. There's a deep clothes covered in my
00:17:57.800 bedroom. It looked like a good hiding place. I thought that perhaps Smee might be there.
00:18:03.420 I opened the door in the dark and touched somebody's hand. Smee, I whispered. There was no answer.
00:18:10.000 And I thought I'd found Smee. I don't understand it, but I suddenly had a strange cold feeling.
00:18:15.120 I can't describe it but I felt that something was wrong so I turned on my electric torch
00:18:22.460 and there was nobody there now I'm sure I touched a hand and nobody could get out of the cupboard
00:18:28.940 because I was standing in the doorway what do you think you imagined that you touched a hand
00:18:33.700 I said he gave a short laugh I knew you would say that of course I imagined it that's the only
00:18:39.800 explanation, isn't it? I agreed with him. I could see that he still felt shaken. Together, we returned
00:18:46.040 to the sitting room for another game of Smee. The others were all ready and waiting to start again.
00:18:52.000 Perhaps it was my imagination, though I'm almost sure that it was not, but I had a feeling that
00:18:57.160 nobody was really enjoying the game anymore. But everyone was too polite to mention it.
00:19:02.340 All the same, I had the feeling that something was wrong. All the fun had gone out of the game.
00:19:08.920 Something deep inside me was trying to warn me,
00:19:11.420 take care, it whispered, take care.
00:19:14.900 There was some unnatural, unhealthy influence at work in the house.
00:19:18.820 Why did I have this feeling?
00:19:20.240 Because Jack Sangston had counted 13 people instead of 12?
00:19:23.780 Because his son had imagined he touched someone's hand in an empty cupboard?
00:19:27.860 I tried to laugh at myself, but I didn't succeed.
00:19:33.160 We started again. 0.77
00:19:34.820 While we were all chasing the unknown Smee, 0.99
00:19:36.600 We were all as noisy as ever
00:19:38.420 But it seemed to me that most of us were just acting
00:19:40.660 We were no longer enjoying the game
00:19:43.500 And at first I stayed with the others
00:19:45.580 But for several minutes 1.00
00:19:47.020 No smee was found 0.94
00:19:48.400 I left the main group 0.96
00:19:50.600 And started searching on the first floor
00:19:52.440 At the west side of the house
00:19:53.820 And there while I was feeling my way along 1.00
00:19:56.560 I bumped into a pair of human knees 1.00
00:19:59.540 I put out my hand 1.00
00:20:04.260 And touched a soft heavy curtain
00:20:06.140 Then I knew where I was.
00:20:09.080 There were tall, deep windows with window seats at the end of the passage.
00:20:13.440 The curtains reached to the ground.
00:20:15.320 Somebody was sitting in the corner of one of the window seats behind a curtain.
00:20:20.420 Aha! I thought. I've caught Smee.
00:20:23.380 So I pulled the curtain to one side and touched a woman's arm.
00:20:27.380 It was a dark, moonless night outside.
00:20:30.200 I could see the woman sitting in the corner of the window seat.
00:20:33.680 Smee? I whispered.
00:20:36.140 there was no answer. When Smee is challenged, he or she does not answer, so I sat down beside her
00:20:43.340 to wait for the others. Then I whispered, what's your name? And out of the darkness beside me the
00:20:49.960 whisper came, Brenda Ford. I did not know the name, but I guessed at once who she was. I knew every
00:21:00.500 girl in the house by name except one and that was the tall pale dark haired girl. So here she was 1.00
00:21:06.540 sitting beside me on the window seat shut in between a heavy curtain and a window. I was
00:21:11.560 beginning to enjoy the game. I wondered if she was enjoying it too. I whispered one or two rather
00:21:17.480 ordinary questions to her and received no answer. Smee is a game of silence. It's a rule of the game
00:21:24.060 that Smee and the person or persons who have found Smee have to keep quiet. This of course makes it
00:21:29.740 harder for the others to find them, but there was nobody else about. I wondered therefore why she was
00:21:35.240 insisting on silence. I spoke again and got no answer. I began to feel a little annoyed. Perhaps
00:21:42.580 she's one of those cold, clever girls who have a poor opinion of all men, I thought. She doesn't 1.00
00:21:48.040 like me and she's using the rules of the game as an excuse for not speaking. Well, if she doesn't
00:21:53.020 like sitting here with me, I certainly don't want to sit with her. I turned away from her. I hope
00:21:57.800 someone finds us soon, I thought. As I sat there, I realised that I disliked sitting beside this
00:22:03.840 girl very much indeed. That was strange. The girl I'd seen at dinner had seemed likeable in a cold
00:22:10.720 kind of way. I noticed her and wanted to know more about her, but now I felt really uncomfortable
00:22:16.100 beside her. The feeling of something wrong, something unnatural was growing. I remember
00:22:22.760 touching her arm and I trembled with horror. I wanted to jump up and run away. I prayed that
00:22:29.580 someone else would come along soon. Just then I heard light footsteps in the passage. Somebody
00:22:35.800 on the other side of the curtain brushed against my knees. The curtain moved to one side and a
00:22:40.020 woman's hand touched my shoulder. It's me? Whispered a voice that I recognised at once.
00:22:45.500 It was Mrs Gorman. Of course she received no answer. She came and sat down beside me and at
00:22:51.040 once, I felt very much better. It's Tony Jackson, isn't it? She whispered. Yes, I whispered back.
00:22:58.200 You're not Smee, are you? No, she's on my other side. She reached out across me. I heard her 0.99
00:23:05.240 fingernails scratch a woman's silk dress. Hello, Smee. How are you? Who are you? Oh, is it against 1.00
00:23:12.660 the rules to talk? Never mind. Tony, we'll break the rules. Do you know, Tony, this game is beginning
00:23:18.460 to annoy me a little. I hope they aren't going to play it all evening. I'd like to play a nice
00:23:23.160 quiet game all together beside a warm fire. Me too, I agreed. Can't you suggest something to
00:23:30.260 them? There's something rather unhealthy about this particular game. I'm sure I'm being very
00:23:34.940 silly but I can't get rid of the idea that we've all got an extra player. Somebody who ought to
00:23:40.420 not be here at all. That was exactly how I felt but I didn't say so. However, I felt very much
00:23:47.980 better. Mrs Gorman's arrival had chased away my fears. We sat talking. I wonder when the others
00:23:54.060 will find us, said Mrs Gorman. After a time we heard the sound of feet and young Reggie's voice
00:24:00.120 shouting. Hello? Hello? Is anybody there? Yes, I answered. Is Mrs Gorman with you? Yes. What
00:24:10.100 happened to you? You've both got forfeits. We've all been waiting for you for hours. But you haven't
00:24:15.600 found Smee yet, I complained. You haven't, you mean. I was Smee this time. But Smee is here with us,
00:24:22.960 I cried. Yes, agreed Mrs Gorman. The curtain was pulled back and we sat looking into the eyes of
00:24:28.780 Reggie's electric torch. I looked at Mrs Gorman and then on my other side. Between me and the
00:24:35.180 wall was an empty place on the window seat. I stood up at once, then I sat down again.
00:24:41.520 I was feeling very sick and the world seemed to be going round and round
00:24:45.780 There was somebody there, I insisted, because I touched her
00:24:49.700 So did I, Mrs Garman, in a trembling voice said
00:24:53.000 And I don't think anyone could leave this window seat without us knowing
00:24:56.740 Reggie gave us a shaky little laugh
00:25:00.060 I remembered his unpleasant experience earlier that evening
00:25:03.740 Someone's been playing jokes, he said
00:25:06.640 Are you coming down?
00:25:07.420 we were not very popular when we came down to the sitting room i found the two of them sitting
00:25:14.320 behind a curtain on a window seat said reggie i went up to the tall dark girl so you pretended
00:25:21.340 to be smee and then went away i accused her she shook her head afterwards we all played cards in
00:25:27.320 the sitting room and i was very glad sometime later jack sangston wanted to talk to me i could
00:25:33.920 see that he was rather cross with me and soon he told me the reason. Tony, he said. I suppose you're
00:25:41.000 in love with Mrs Gorman. That's your business, but please don't make love to her in my house
00:25:45.160 during a game. You kept everyone waiting. It was very rude of you and I'm ashamed of you. 1.00
00:25:51.080 But we were not alone, I protested. There was somebody else there, somebody who was pretending
00:25:55.640 to be Smee. I believe it was that tall, dark girl, Miss Ford. She whispered her name to me.
00:26:00.920 of course she refused to admit it afterwards. Jack Sangston stared at me. Miss who? He breathed.
00:26:10.460 Brenda Ford, she said. Jack put a hand on my shoulder. Look here, Tony, he said. I don't
00:26:18.320 mind a joke, but enough is enough. We don't want to worry the ladies. Brenda Ford is the name of 1.00
00:26:25.700 girl who broke her neck on the stairs. She was playing hide-and-seek here ten years ago.
00:26:36.640 And that was Smee by A.M. Burridge, a spine-chilling tale that transcends the boundaries between
00:26:43.140 the living and the dead. As we unwrap the narratives of these gothic tales, let's not
00:26:50.980 forget that their shadows linger on in the traditions of ireland america germany scandinavia
