00:01:54.680 You're listening to Disinformed,
00:01:56.580 a miniseries from There Are No Girls on the Internet.
00:01:59.560 I'm Bridget Todd.
00:02:04.220 I talk a lot about hostility
00:02:05.960 toward underrepresented voices and technology
00:02:07.980 and how it ultimately hurts us all.
00:02:10.600 And facial recognition is a great example of what I mean.
00:02:13.380 We know that facial recognition technology
00:02:15.140 is unreliable when it comes to people with darker skin tones and women's faces.
00:02:19.280 And with the rise of this technology being used for things like policing and surveillance,
00:02:23.100 this is obviously a pretty big problem.
00:02:25.200 We've already seen reports of Black people being arrested for crimes they had nothing to do with
00:02:28.940 based solely on the use of faulty facial recognition software. 1.00
00:02:32.560 This is what happens when Black women are treated like outsiders in tech spaces. 1.00
00:02:36.480 If the technology that plays such a big role in all of our lives is built by teams of homogenous people 1.00
00:02:40.920 with biases they might not even realize,
00:02:43.520 that technology can go on to harm us all.
00:02:46.420 Now, the reason that we know about the gender and racial biases
00:02:48.920 encoded into facial recognition technology at all
00:02:51.260 is because of the labor and talent of Black women AI researchers who studied it. 0.76
00:02:56.400 Joy Boulamwini, Timnet Gaboru, and Deb Raji 0.81
00:02:59.380 are Black female scientists who've conducted groundbreaking research
00:03:02.700 under racial and gender biases of facial recognition software
00:03:05.360 and artificial intelligence.
00:03:07.180 If you've seen the documentary Coded Bias,
00:03:09.120 then you've seen some of their amazing work.
00:03:10.920 It's actually on Netflix right now, and I highly suggest y'all check it out.
00:03:14.160 But if you watched 60 Minutes last week, you would never know that it was Black women who first did this groundbreaking research.
00:03:21.460 That's because even though 60 Minutes producers reached out to Joy, who is also the head of the Algorithmic Justice League, an organization that raises awareness about the harms of AI,
00:03:30.120 they just erased her voice from a story about the use of facial recognition to arrest two Black people for crimes they didn't commit.
00:03:36.900 Instead, they interviewed Patrick Groether, a white male computer scientist.
00:03:40.920 Now, no one is saying that Grother doesn't know his stuff, but he himself correctly cites the work of these Black women and acknowledges that theirs was the landmark study on bias and facial recognition and that their work was the motivation for his own work.
00:03:55.100 So why didn't CBS feel the need to cite them at all?
00:03:58.680 Even worse, Joy says that CBS actually did reach after her.
00:04:02.720 She says that she spoke to 60 Minutes producers for hours
00:04:05.420 and spent time building a custom demo for Anderson Cooper
00:04:08.900 and made recommendations on research to include subjects to interview
00:04:12.320 with the emphasis on stories of Black people who have been falsely arrested because of AI.
00:04:16.600 She was on her way to get COVID tested for the interview
00:04:19.320 when at the very last minute, it was canceled. 1.00
00:04:22.800 This is erasure of Black women's labor, voices, and talent.
00:04:26.860 And it's even worse than it happened on a segment about racial bias. 0.53
00:04:30.960 Why wouldn't CBS center the Black woman who pioneered this research
00:04:34.380 on a story about the way that it harms the Black community? 1.00
00:04:37.660 Why would they only talk to white researchers? 0.58
00:04:40.340 And it's the same thing that so many Black women in tech have talked about. 1.00
00:04:44.140 We aren't seen as experts, even in the fields that we build.
00:04:48.060 Joy is not taking this.
00:04:49.980 She launched a petition demanding CBS apologize
00:04:52.500 and take specific steps to make sure that Black women are properly cited in the future. 1.00
00:04:56.580 Which just goes to show you that Black women are pretty much always doing the work 0.99
00:04:59.680 that makes things better for everyone. 1.00
00:05:02.240 Those reporting on algorithmic biases and discrimination
00:05:04.720 must prioritize the perspective of those doing the work,
00:05:07.860 who are often marginalized voices themselves.
00:05:10.280 This erasure is routine.
00:05:12.000 This is systemic. 0.94
00:05:13.140 For centuries, the labor of Black women 0.99
00:05:14.800 has been kept in the background, 0.92
00:05:16.360 behind closed doors, and out of the public view. 1.00
00:05:19.180 Black women and the brilliant, cutting-edge, 1.00
00:05:21.180 field-leading, and sustaining work that they do
00:05:23.240 must not be erased any longer, the petition reads.
00:05:26.360 And you can sign the petition at the link
00:05:28.180 in our show description. 1.00
00:05:29.660 CBS, and honestly, tech in general, needs to stop sidelining Black women. 1.00
00:05:34.380 It is Black women who consistently do the work of making tech safer and better for everyone. 0.90
00:05:39.440 And we need to be recognized for it, not erased or silenced.
00:05:48.680 If you enjoyed this podcast, please help us grow by subscribing.
