00:01:36.720 Just a quick heads up, today's episode mentions sex crimes against minors.
00:01:44.920 There are no girls on the internet as a production of iHeartRadio and Unbossed Creative.
00:01:53.040 I'm Bridget Todd.
00:01:54.160 And this is There Are No Girls on the Internet.
00:01:58.740 We've talked a lot about online conspiracy theories on the podcast,
00:02:02.240 but it's been a little while since we've talked about QAnon-y stuff.
00:02:05.940 And with Jeffrey Epstein back in the news, I think it's time to dip back in a little bit.
00:02:10.100 Because I honestly don't know if I believe what a lot of folks are saying,
00:02:13.680 that this, and by this I mean Jeffrey Epstein,
00:02:16.560 might be the thing that finally shakes up Trump MAGA world.
00:02:20.280 More on that in a moment.
00:02:21.140 But I do think it is a very interesting example of what happens when somebody who makes their entire thing about feeding conspiracy theories and builds up a loyal following in doing so tries to put that toothpaste back in the tube.
00:02:34.780 Will it work? We will see.
00:02:37.020 So here's what's going on for folks who don't know.
00:02:39.580 First, I'll start with a kind of quick and dirty crash course on who Epstein was with a few diversions, how we got here, and then I'll get into what I think it all means.
00:02:51.140 So first, who is Jeffrey Epstein?
00:02:55.900 Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy financier who really threw his money all over the place.
00:03:00.840 It's not totally clear how he got his money and how much money he actually had.
00:03:05.340 Some people call him a billionaire. I've heard that disputed.
00:03:07.960 His background is kind of unbelievable.
00:03:10.920 His first job was as a teacher at a high school,
00:03:13.540 despite not having any formal teaching credentials or formal teaching education,
00:03:17.720 if you can believe that.
00:03:18.600 And of course, while teaching, he had a reputation for inappropriate behavior with his students.
00:03:23.500 He was first convicted of sex crimes against minors in 2008 and got off with a very lenient sentence, only about 13 months with work release.
00:03:32.620 After serving his unbelievably short sentence, Epstein continued to amass money, power, and influence until he was arrested again in 2019.
00:03:41.800 Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
00:03:46.860 The New York City medical examiner ruled his death a suicide, but conspiracy theories claiming that Epstein didn't kill himself began to spread almost immediately in the aftermath of his death.
00:03:57.440 The idea here is that Epstein did not actually die of suicide like we were told, but instead was taken out to avoid more details that might incriminate powerful people.
00:04:07.040 And it's one of those theories that kind of works regardless of what side of the aisle you're on, because Epstein had deep ties with both political parties.
00:04:14.220 The thing about Epstein is that part of his M.O. really was ingratiating himself in lots of influential spaces with wealthy, powerful people.
00:04:22.800 He gave donations to a lot of influential spaces.
00:04:25.260 We did an episode that I'll link to in the show notes about the contributions that he made to MIT's Media Lab
00:04:30.340 and the Kenyan first year MIT grad student who called this out and called for the head of the Media Lab to resign once his connections to Jeffrey Epstein were revealed.
00:04:39.280 So it's one of those things where a lot of powerful, rich, and or famous people on all sides of the aisle had deep connections with Epstein at one time or another.
00:04:47.580 And that is exactly the way that Epstein designed it.
00:04:50.440 Now, obviously, just because somebody was connected to Epstein does not mean they did anything illegal.
00:04:55.980 Rich and famous people know other rich and famous people.
00:04:58.440 so once Epstein was in some of those circles, I think a lot of people probably did just casually
00:05:03.720 know them because they were all rich and powerful, not necessarily because they were all doing crimes
00:05:08.800 together. Just to give you a sense of the diversity of people who were connected to Epstein's world,
00:05:14.800 allow me two quick diversions. One is that I just finished the fantastic memoir called What Remains
00:05:20.760 by Carol Radswell, formerly of The Real Housewives of New York City, and once I finished the book,
00:05:25.660 I flipped the book around the back cover to see her author photo and was shocked to see the photo
00:05:31.060 credit because that photo was taken by none other than Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently
00:05:36.560 incarcerated in connection with helping traffic women and girls for Epstein.
00:05:45.020 The second diversion, if you'll allow me, is Epstein's connection to the creator of one of
00:05:50.520 my favorite television shows, The Simpsons, Matt Groening. One of the last accusers of Epstein to
00:05:56.660 be public and not use a pseudonym like Jane Doe was Virginia Gouffre, who died by apparent suicide
00:06:02.700 this April, who in court described being sexually abused by Epstein. She gave a detailed description
00:06:09.280 of a foot massage that she said that she was asked to give Matt Groening when she was 16 years old on
00:06:14.820 a private flight in California. This specific claim was made in an unpublished manuscript that
00:06:19.940 she wrote called The Billionaire's Playboy Club, where she described how she was talking to Matt
00:06:24.180 Groening on a flight, telling him how much she loved The Simpsons when Epstein suggested that
00:06:28.480 she give Matt Groening a foot massage. And she agrees. He takes off his shoes and his feet are
00:06:34.140 so horrible that she's like, I can't do this. And she takes out a rag and washes them first because
00:06:40.800 that's how bad they are. And as a show of thanks, Matt Groening gets her a little drawing of her
00:06:46.840 two favorite Simpsons characters, Homer and Bart, as a thank you. Disgusting. So I wanted to share 0.96
00:06:53.280 that to illustrate the diversity of famous, powerful, and wealthy people who have a connection
00:06:58.760 to Epstein. And that is by design. He did this as a way of protecting himself and shielding himself
00:07:04.360 from accountability for his many crimes. Kind of like we talked about in that episode that we did
00:07:08.600 about Diddy. Really getting in tight with a lot of different powerful people across a lot of
00:07:13.300 different industries and sectors, and of course, throwing around tons of money. Because how could
00:07:18.080 a man who spends so much of his own money supporting charitable causes also be a serial
00:07:22.800 abuser and trafficker, right? Also very similar to Sean P. Diddy Combs, Epstein was known for
00:07:28.900 having hidden cameras all around his property as part of a compronaut strategy, where he would get
00:07:33.920 evidence of these powerful people doing things they shouldn't be doing, and then use that to
00:07:38.560 extort or blackmail them later. And he apparently extorted people like Bill Gates, who was friendly
00:07:44.860 with Epstein, and eventually Epstein tried to extort him. According to the Wall Street Journal,
00:07:49.540 before his arrest and death, Epstein extorted Bill Gates by threatening to release information
00:07:54.120 about an extramarital affair that Gates had while he was married. Now, Gates is divorced now and has
00:07:59.420 admitted that he had affairs while he was married. This is from The Guardian. Epstein found out about
00:08:04.300 the Microsoft's co-founder's affair with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova, and he threatened
00:08:09.420 Gates into reimbursing him for tuition costs that Epstein had initially covered for Antonova to
00:08:14.280 attend a software coding school. Epstein's threat to Gates came in the form of an email he sent in
00:08:19.320 2017 after he failed to convince Gates to join a multi-billion dollar charity fund he attempted to
00:08:25.140 set up. I looked into this story and it's kind of a very weird situation. Basically, this 20-year-old
00:08:31.460 Russian bridge enthusiast Antinova, wanted half a million dollars to start a business that would
00:08:38.120 teach people to play bridge online. Epstein was like, oh, I bet Gates will give you the money,
00:08:42.740 so connected her with Bill Gates. Bill Gates declined to give her the money, but it sounds
00:08:47.660 like they did start some kind of a relationship while Gates was married. Then Epstein paid for
00:08:53.680 her to stay in an apartment and go to coding school. At the same time, Epstein was trying
00:08:58.340 to start up this charitable fund with the bank J.P. Morgan. And this was meant to be a way for
00:09:03.160 Epstein to kind of rebuild his reputation in polite society after he had to register as a
00:09:08.000 sex offender because of his 2008 conviction for sex crimes against minors. But starting up this
00:09:13.080 fund really relied on Epstein getting big money from Bill Gates. So Epstein was kind of scamming.
00:09:20.520 He was communicating with J.P. Morgan as if he was Bill Gates's financial advisor, but in reality,
00:09:25.440 he wasn't. When this scam all blew up in Jeffrey Epstein's face, it sounded like Epstein thought,
00:09:31.800 well, at least Bill Gates should be reimbursing me for this woman's coding school because he
00:09:36.560 ended up having an affair with her. So in 2017, Epstein emailed Gates about Antinova after Gates'
00:09:42.320 affair with her ended. In the email, Epstein demanded Gates reimburse him for her coding
00:09:47.440 school costs. The tone of the message was that Epstein knew about the affair and could expose it,
00:09:52.500 The Wall Street Journal reported. Bill Gates' ex-wife, Melinda, has given interviews to the
00:09:57.160 effect that Bill Gates' relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was a contributing factor to their
00:10:02.040 marriage falling apart. You know, it was also widely reported that Bill had a friendship or
00:10:08.380 business or some kind of contact with Jeffrey Epstein and that you were not, that that was
00:10:13.260 very upsetting to you. Did that play a role in the divorce at all in this process? Yeah, as I said,
00:10:19.340 it's not one thing. It was many things. But I did not like that he'd had meetings with Jeffrey
00:10:26.040 Epstein. No. And you made that clear to him. I made that clear to him. I also met Jeffrey Epstein
00:10:33.400 exactly one time. Did you? Yes, because I wanted to see who this man was. And I regretted it from
00:10:41.680 the second I stepped in the door. He was abhorrent. He was evil personified. I had nightmares about it
00:10:48.920 afterwards. So, you know, my heart breaks for these young women because that's how I felt.
00:10:54.000 And here I'm an older woman. My God, I feel terrible for those young women. It's awful.
00:10:58.660 You felt that the moment you walked in. I didn't realize it. Yeah. And you shared that with Bill
00:11:03.140 and he still continued to spend time with him? Any of the questions remaining about what Bill's
00:11:10.060 relationship there was, those are for Bill to answer. Okay. But I made it very clear how I felt
00:11:14.380 about him. So Epstein was all mixed up with all kinds of wealthy, powerful people in tech and
00:11:20.840 politics and notably had connections with both Democrats and Republicans. In 2024, a federal
00:11:26.660 court in Manhattan unsealed the court documents associated from a 2015 civil lawsuit and revealed
00:11:32.180 the names of numerous individuals described in the suit as associates, affiliates, or victims
00:11:37.160 of Jeffrey Epstein. Those names include people like President Bill Clinton and President Donald
00:11:42.600 Trump, magician David Copperfield, Prince Andrew, which like no surprise there, the former Israeli
00:11:48.840 prime minister, actor Kevin Spacey, lawyer Alan Dershowitz. Dershowitz was a member of the legal
00:11:54.260 defense team for the criminal case against Epstein in 2008, the late New Mexico governor Bill
00:11:59.360 Richardson and former vice president Al Gore, among others. And of course, Trump has his own
00:12:04.720 documented connections to Epstein. Trump was known to have been friendly with Epstein, telling New
00:12:09.120 York Magazine in 2002. I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with.
00:12:15.280 It's even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger
00:12:19.640 side. Now, these statements came before there were any public allegations of wrongdoing against
00:12:25.100 Epstein. Epstein and Trump shared events at Mar-a-Lago and Palm Beach, where they both lived.
00:12:30.420 There is lots of video and photos of them partying together at Trump's Mar-a-Lago in 1992, 1997,
00:12:36.800 and 2000. They frequently traveled together. Epstein's private jet logs list Trump on
00:12:42.580 multiple flights between Palm Beach and New York in the 90s. Epstein is on audio describing Trump
00:12:48.360 as, quote, his closest friend for 10 years. But remember, Epstein is somebody who inflated his
00:12:54.340 connections or representation with wealthy and powerful people. So who knows? In any event,
00:12:59.400 very conveniently, in 2019, after Epstein's arrest, Trump said that he had a falling out
00:13:04.480 with Epstein a long time ago. So during Trump's campaigns, he really fanned the flames of the
00:13:10.740 kind of conspiracy theories adjacent to Epstein, but not necessarily Epstein specifically. This is
00:13:17.360 all complicated by the fact that Epstein was a real convicted child sex criminal, but his whole
00:13:22.960 saga kind of got lumped in with a mishmash of harm against children conspiracy theories that
00:13:27.960 are not true. Things like QAnon, Pizzagate, and Save the Children. So the fact that Epstein really
00:13:33.800 was an abuser of children and really was connected to powerful political leaders kind of gets used
00:13:39.640 as a proof point for a larger umbrella of often anti-Semitic false narratives about harm being
00:13:45.060 done to children by a cabal of global elites who control everything. And that is the set of
00:13:50.820 conspiracy theories that Trump more openly flirted with. Even if he did not often evoke
00:13:55.460 Epstein specifically, you can see how this was a useful message for Trump to have used in his
00:13:59.780 campaigning. Trump and his allies really harnessed the kind of simmering suspicion of establishment
00:14:04.760 figures and cast Trump in opposition as this bold outsider and the only person brave enough to take
00:14:11.520 on the deep state. Trump pretty openly evoked all of this while campaigning. In 2022, he reposted
00:14:17.500 an image of himself wearing a Q for QAnon lapel pen overlaid with the words, the storm is coming.
00:14:24.280 In QAnon lore, the storm refers to what people think will be Trump's final victory, when there will be mass arrests and maybe even mass executions of Democrat sex criminals in the street.
00:14:36.200 In 2020, Trump was asked about QAnon directly in an interview.
00:14:40.580 Now, he could have dismissed this as a baseless conspiracy theory, but instead he praised the movement as people that love our country.
00:14:49.320 He basically was like, oh, QAnon says that I'm against pedophiles.
00:14:53.080 I'm an enemy to pedophiles.
00:14:54.300 If that's a good thing, I'll take it. 0.94
00:14:56.120 And he more or less reinforced their belief that he was exposing a satanic pedophile ring.
00:15:01.760 So we saw Trump really lean into this idea, too, posting images referring to himself as a martyr,
00:15:07.040 fighting bad guys and criminals and psychopaths and the so-called deep state.
00:15:11.500 Trump didn't often mention QAnon himself, but he was more than happy to boost people who did.
00:15:17.760 Media Matters actually did an analysis of how often he would repost outright, obvious, explicit QAnon supporters on social media.
00:15:25.680 And that happened a ton.
00:15:27.340 So he gets to signal to these people, hey, I see you, I get you, I'm one of you, wink, wink,
00:15:32.620 while keeping this kind of plausible deniability cover of not having to have said so directly, which we know by now is a Trump classic.

00:18:06.180 Without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
00:18:08.900 I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
00:18:16.520 They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
00:18:20.420 But these aren't stories about what's taken from them.
00:18:23.880 They're stories about what it takes to make it out alive.
00:18:27.500 Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:18:36.180 at our back. So the big point of contention here is what is often called Epstein's client list,
00:18:48.140 a supposed list of powerful elites that Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell might have trafficked women
00:18:53.760 and girls to slash with. I should add that Gawker, rest in peace, published Epstein's address book
00:18:59.520 maybe 10 years ago, and New York Magazine published an annotated version back in 2019.
00:19:04.880 Business Insider released a searchable version the next year,
00:19:07.900 along with flight logs from Epstein's private plane, which were released in 2015.
00:19:12.140 So Trump himself has spoken directly about this client list since he got back into office,
00:19:17.280 telling supporters that he does intend to look into Epstein's client list.
00:19:21.000 He talked about it on his appearance on Lex Friedman's podcast.
00:19:24.560 I was going to put the audio here, but honestly, y'all don't want to hear Trump's voice.
00:19:29.100 Y'all don't want to hear Lex Friedman's voice.
00:19:31.280 And frankly, neither do I.
00:19:32.520 But the exchange went like this. Friedman says, it's just very strange for a lot of people that that list of clients that went to the island has not been made public. And Trump responds, it's very interesting, isn't it? It probably will be, by the way. Friedman responds, if you're able, you'll be. And then Trump interjects and says, yeah, I'd certainly take a look at it.
00:19:53.580 Now, Kennedy's interesting because it's so many years ago.
00:19:56.860 They do that for danger because it endangers certain people, etc., etc. 0.76
00:20:00.800 So Kennedy is very different from the Epstein thing, but I'd be inclined to do the Epstein. 0.87
00:20:05.580 I'd have no problem with it.
00:20:07.100 But you'll recall that back during Elon Musk and Donald Trump's big breakup earlier this summer,
00:20:13.720 Musk claimed that Trump will never release the Epstein client list because,
00:20:18.440 dun-dun-dun, Trump is on the Epstein client list.
00:20:22.520 So this is a big issue because I simply cannot express to you how much some of his deepest
00:20:27.460 supporters truly did expect mass arrests of Democrats and hundreds of Democratic lawmakers
00:20:33.540 being perked walked through the streets in connection with sex crimes against children
00:20:37.940 and Epstein.
00:20:39.380 And Trump kind of low-key hyped them up for this too, even if he never came out and said
00:20:44.800 it directly.
00:20:46.040 Trump further leaned into that whole conspiracy theory mindset when he appointed to senior
00:20:50.680 positions folks who have similarly used the same kind of conspiracy theories to make broad
00:20:55.800 accusations of corruption and abuse, most notably FBI Director Kash Patel and FBI Deputy Director
00:21:02.120 Dan Bongino. Before they joined government, both Patel and Bongino spent years on podcast after
00:21:09.320 podcast and TV appearance after TV appearance, kind of winking at QAnon and Epstein conspiracy
00:21:15.180 theories and demanding the files released, even going so far as to suggest the Biden administration
00:21:21.180 was intentionally withholding the Epstein client list to protect its own. So these picks to the FBI
00:21:27.540 were men who are deep, deep in conspiracy world. When they came on board, I think it gave Trump
00:21:33.340 supporters the sense that like, yes, the people in charge of the FBI, they are one of us. All of
00:21:38.880 these theories are going to be taken seriously and all of these theories are going to be acted
00:21:42.300 upon because Patel and Bongino believed them too, and they are now in charge. So now the White House
00:21:48.240 knows they've got these people frothing at the mouths. And back in February, they were like,
00:21:53.240 let's throw a little bit of red meat, shall we? Which brings us to the binder stunt. In a 0.99
00:21:59.120 presentation at the White House on February 27, 2025, Attorney General Pam Bondi personally handed
00:22:05.020 out these like big white oversized binders labeled the Epstein files colon phase one to about 15
00:22:14.440 right wing influencers inside the West Wing. If you have not seen an image or video of this event,
00:22:21.200 I really do implore you to take a look. I'll put the link down in the show notes because
00:22:26.220 I don't think I've ever seen an event that was more clearly a photo op stunt. The binders are
00:22:33.700 massive and the the typeface on the front of the binders that say the epstein files phase one
00:22:38.940 it's so big that it could be seen from practically across the street like i could see it in my
00:22:43.820 apartment in columbia heights fucking miles away from the white house right and so they're
00:22:48.920 photographed like holding these big binders that say epstein files phase one above their heads
00:22:54.500 and even calling them epstein files phase one kind of gave the impression that this was just
00:23:00.340 the beginning, there was going to be more Epstein information being released to the public to come.
00:23:04.440 The event, which Trump, Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and J.D. Vance all attended,
00:23:10.240 was meant to showcase these newly declassified documents. But then these influencers get home,
00:23:16.880 open the binders, and realize that all that's in them is previously public information,
00:23:21.880 like public flight logs, publicly available redacted contact lists, and old evidence lists
00:23:27.700 that were already public.
00:23:29.040 The big thing was a letdown for them,
00:23:30.980 and it was obviously just a stunt.
00:23:32.920 And mind you, these are MAGA people.
00:23:35.160 They were like scamming their own people. 0.59
00:23:37.600 Like these were the worst of the worst, 0.81
00:23:39.080 people like Chaya Raychik of Libs of TikTok. 1.00
00:23:42.000 So when they get home and find out
00:23:43.680 that these binders have nothing in them
00:23:45.240 and they've basically been scammed,
00:23:46.360 it prompted instant criticism of Pam Bondi and the DOJ.
00:23:51.000 Jack Posobiec reportedly left the event early
00:23:53.380 and later posted,
00:23:54.660 they flew us to DC for this?
00:23:56.480 This is PR, not justice.
00:23:59.380 Chaya Raychik of Libs of TikTok posted on Telegram,
00:24:02.520 We were promised transparency.
00:24:04.540 Instead, we got a whitewashed version of the truth.
00:24:07.240 D.C. Drano publicly called for A.G. Pam Bondi's resignation and accused her of, quote,
00:24:12.700 running cover for elite pedophiles.
00:24:15.120 What's kind of funny is that Pam Bondi essentially blamed this whole thing on Kash Patel.
00:24:19.220 Bondi released a letter to Patel accusing the FBI of inappropriately withholding
00:24:23.400 thousands of pages of files related to Epstein from the DOJ and demanded the FBI turn over the
00:24:29.220 material by 8 a.m. the following day. But no additional information ever came. Bondi said in
00:24:34.920 a response to a question from a Fox News host about Epstein's client list that the client list
00:24:40.420 is, quote, sitting on my desk right now to review. So get out those handcuffs and get ready for those
00:24:45.980 perp walks because there's about to be a mass wave of arrests, right? This is going to invigorate
00:24:50.880 the MAGA base, right? Well, no, because now they're saying, actually, our bad, there is no
00:24:56.280 Epstein client list. They announced this on 4th of July holiday weekend, which is a classic time
00:25:01.900 to drop information you kind of don't want people to see because everybody's on vacation.
00:25:06.320 In a memo, they said that after a systematic review of the Epstein files, the Justice Department
00:25:11.220 officials revealed no incriminating client list, nor did they find evidence that Epstein had
00:25:15.940 blackmailed any powerful figures. And the memo reaffirmed that Epstein died by suicide in his
00:25:21.500 Brooklyn jail cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges in 2019. So Bondi basically
00:25:26.780 said, there is no client list. Epstein died of suicide. Nothing to see here. The administration
00:25:31.720 also released what they called raw video of surveillance footage of Epstein's death by
00:25:36.880 suicide. However, Wired recently reported that newly uncovered metadata reveals that nearly
00:25:43.320 three minutes of footage were cut out from what the FBI and the DOJ described as full raw
00:25:49.620 surveillance video from the only functioning camera near Jeffrey Epstein's prison cell the
00:25:54.920 night before he was found dead. The Trump administration said that releasing this full,
00:25:59.940 this quote, full raw surveillance video was part of their commitment to fully investigate
00:26:04.720 his death. But given that almost three minutes of that footage was not released, it only raised
00:26:10.300 new questions about how that footage was edited and assembled. Now, Wired had previously reported
00:26:15.620 that that video had been stitched together in Adobe Premiere Pro from two different video files,
00:26:20.920 contradicting the Justice Department's claim that it was, quote, raw footage. And now, further
00:26:26.000 analysis shows that one of the source clips was approximately two minutes and 53 seconds longer
00:26:30.700 than the segment included in the final video, suggesting that that footage appears to have been
00:26:35.440 trimmed before release. But to be super clear, it is unclear what, if anything at all, the minutes
00:26:41.020 cut from that first clip showed. Attorney General Pam Bondi has attributed it to a nightly system
00:26:46.020 reset. So as you can imagine, just even just hearing that, as you can imagine being told like,
00:26:53.380 oh, that missing footage, just a normal glitch in the system that happens every night. None of this
00:26:58.440 went down super well for Trump's QAnon true believers. Because remember, these are people,
00:27:03.780 They are Trump's own supporters who have made their entire personality this stuff.
00:27:09.200 Their entire personalities and identities, in some cases, are about getting justice for kids.
00:27:14.880 Some of these people have alienated their entire families and lost lots of money because of this pursuit.
00:27:20.380 And they were told by Trump that they could not trust elected officials because all the elected officials are implicated in this and lying.
00:27:27.700 And now those same people are just saying, trust us and his supporters are not having it.
00:27:33.600 Here's some of what they had to say.
00:27:35.360 Right-wing commentator, Benny Johnson,
00:27:37.900 this is the worst response I've ever seen from President Trump.
00:27:41.340 Disgraced former General Michael Flynn,
00:27:43.400 considered a hero by the QAnon movement, said,
00:27:46.220 Donald Trump, please understand the all-caps Epstein affair is not going away.
00:27:51.940 Right-wing commentator, Matt Walsh,
00:27:54.020 called Trump's statement extremely obtuse, 0.99
00:27:55.880 saying, we don't accept obvious bullshit from our political leaders. 0.98
00:28:00.600 Wara Loomer, the far-right conspiracy theorist and pundit and influential Trump advisor, 0.98
00:28:05.860 accused Pam Bondi of lying and called for her to be fired.
00:28:09.400 And former Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Bondi of covering up crimes,
00:28:14.140 very serious crimes by their own description.
00:28:16.920 It seems like a lot of the heat and ire has really been aimed at Pam Bondi,
00:28:20.900 even though it's pretty clear that she is acting on behalf of Trump.
00:28:24.580 Trump defended her, saying,
00:28:26.040 Attorney General Pam Bondi, who is doing a fantastic job, all caps.
00:28:30.620 We're on one team, MAGA, and I don't like what's happening.
00:28:33.740 We have a all caps perfect administration, all caps talk of the world.
00:28:38.540 And weirdly in quotes for some reason, selfish people are trying to hurt it.
00:28:43.500 All over a guy who never dies, Jeffrey Epstein.
00:28:46.700 For years, it's Epstein over and over again.
00:28:49.600 Why are we giving publicity to files written by Obama, 0.97
00:28:52.700 crooked Hillary, Comey, Brennan, and the losers and criminals of the Biden administration.
00:28:58.200 Even though, side note, the DOJ files were largely written in 2019 when Trump was president, but okay. 0.83

00:30:11.860 I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files.
00:30:15.440 I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything.
00:30:24.020 Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable.
00:30:28.280 I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
00:30:32.840 I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
00:30:40.280 They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
00:30:44.100 But these aren't stories about what's taken from them.
00:30:47.760 They're stories about what it takes to make it out alive.

00:31:21.880 the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.

00:31:59.040 let's get right back into it so do you know that phrase hoisted by his own petard the idea of
00:32:12.320 becoming ensnared in the very trap that you were setting for someone else i think that is kind of
00:32:17.900 what's going on here because trump has been exploiting all of these conspiracy theories for
00:32:22.380 years and using them to sow distrust in government officials russell muirhead a professor at dartmouth
00:32:27.920 College was written on the online intersection of conspiracy theories and politics puts it this way.
00:32:32.800 Nobody exploited these questions more than Donald Trump. And he did that because, as always, he
00:32:37.680 wanted to paint government officials as liars, as self-serving, as people who just deserve to be 0.65
00:32:42.380 fired. Well, now the government officials are people he appointed. And now he's saying there's
00:32:46.980 nothing to see here. And Trump really leaned in hard to those Epstein rumors when it suited him,
00:32:52.340 even so far as retweeting a post in 2019 that alleged that Bill Clinton was somehow connected
00:32:58.080 to Epstein's death. And now he is just trying to abandon all that, tell everybody, stop doing that,
00:33:03.800 stop asking these questions and have us all go along with that, even after he was the one who
00:33:08.640 kicked up all this dirt and dust around it. And I think the fact that some of his supporters are
00:33:12.900 so caught up in this really shows how much Epstein and QAnon and conspiracy theories in general
00:33:18.560 have become intertwined with today's Republican Party.
00:33:22.080 Like, these are not fringe attitudes or beliefs.
00:33:25.380 Marjorie Taylor Greene is an open QAnon supporter,
00:33:28.460 and she's not just some kook posting on a random message board.
00:33:31.940 She's in Congress with the president's endorsement.
00:33:34.420 And in many cases, I really think that conspiracy theories like this
00:33:38.180 are the glue that holds everything together.
00:33:41.100 So now that they're saying, oh, no, this conspiracy theory,
00:33:43.940 it's not real, it doesn't exist, get over it.
00:33:45.760 What will be the glue that holds this whole thing together in its absence?
00:33:49.540 And I think that's one of the reasons we're not seeing this go away as quickly as Trump wishes that it would,
00:33:54.300 because Trump is now finding out just how powerful and what a grip conspiracy theories can have on people.
00:34:00.980 You know, live by the sword, die by the sword.
00:34:03.860 Trump completely melted down about this on his Truth Social account,
00:34:07.600 basically saying that he can't believe that anybody wants to talk about Epstein.
00:34:11.220 A hoax by Biden.
00:34:13.220 Here's a bit of what he had to say.
00:34:15.080 What's going on with my, quote, boys, and in some cases, gals?
00:34:19.620 They're all going after Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was doing an all-caps fantastic job ellipses for some reason.
00:34:26.420 Let's keep it that way and not waste any capital T time and capital E energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that no one cares about.
00:34:34.680 Their new all-caps scam is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein hoax. 0.98
00:34:40.780 and my past supporters have bought into this bullshit hook, line, and sinker. Let these 0.99
00:34:46.420 weaklings continue forward and do the Democrats' work. Don't even think about talking about our
00:34:51.920 incredible and unprecedented success because I don't even want their support anymore. Which,
00:34:57.300 I have to say, fucking all-time truth social post from Trump, and that is really saying something. 0.95
00:35:04.940 And him basically coming out and saying that if you are still asking questions about Epstein, 0.97
00:35:10.000 I don't even want your support, I think is really something.
00:35:17.920 Now, people have been saying a lot that they think that this is going to be the thing that
00:35:21.680 pulls MAGA world apart. Can you believe it? Jeffrey Epstein. And you might be thinking,
00:35:25.940 if I think that as well, do I think this is going to have a lasting impact in MAGA world,
00:35:31.640 considering that Trump has been telling his supporters that he wants him to shut up about
00:35:35.300 it and they have not shut up about it? Honestly, I really don't think so. I don't know if this is
00:35:39.600 just my own cynicism and sort of resigned status to what's happening. But I think that a lot of
00:35:46.960 these people have built up so much of their identities and their personalities around this,
00:35:51.700 like where else would they go? Who else would enable that? Where would all that energy go?
00:35:55.920 One of my favorite journalists who focuses on conspiracy for NBC, Brandy Zardroni, put it very
00:36:01.020 well on Blue Sky. She writes, we're about to find out if Get Over It from a trusted leader can pull
00:36:06.060 people away from a conspiracy theory. I'm skeptical, but you never know. And that really
00:36:10.300 sums up how I feel about it too. And maybe we will never know because House Republicans just
00:36:16.320 voted down another Democratic procedural maneuver aimed at forcing the DOJ to release documents
00:36:22.460 related to Epstein. Republicans in the House voted against attaching a Democratic amendment
00:36:27.340 to another piece of legislation that would have forced the DOJ to release the Epstein files.
00:36:32.180 This would have, had it gone through, it would have forced Pam Bondi to publish all documents related to Epstein within 30 days.
00:36:39.160 So Trump officials were trying really hard to put this whole thing to bed.
00:36:42.720 But it has not been put to bed at all, because the Wall Street Journal released a report that Trump may have sent Epstein kind of a gross, crude birthday card for his 50th birthday back in 2003, with a hand-drawn picture of some boobs.
00:36:57.340 And it ends with the words, a pal is a wonderful thing, happy birthday, and may every day be another wonderful secret.
00:37:05.400 Trump says he never wrote it, doesn't draw pictures, doesn't talk like that, and filed a suit against the Wall Street Journal, News Corp, Rupert Murdoch, and the two journalists responsible for the article.
00:37:16.140 And on Thursday night, Trump suddenly reversed course and instructed Pam Bondi to release pertinent files on the criminal investigation into Epstein, subject to court approval.
00:37:26.620 And on Friday, Bondi filed a motion in New York to release grand jury transcripts associated with the Epstein case.
00:37:32.980 Now, keep in mind that the Department of Justice and the FBI still retain the bulk of what those who are calling for transparency are really wanting to see.
00:37:40.640 And it's not even clear what, if anything, would be potentially released in that.
00:37:45.400 Meanwhile, Senate Democrats sent a letter to Bondi asking why exactly it took an additional three months to release a summary of the findings related to Epstein.
00:37:53.500 and, importantly, why agents were instructed to flag any mention of Trump in whatever they found.
00:38:00.900 Curious, right?
00:38:02.040 This is obviously a developing story, and no doubt there will be more twists and turns as it continues.
00:38:08.200 And I think it's really important to note that amidst all this noise and all this chaos
00:38:12.500 are actual voices of actual victims and survivors,
00:38:16.500 and it is incredibly important to me that those voices do not go unheard.
00:38:20.720 Danielle Benski, who was abused by Epstein when she was a teenager in 2004,
00:38:25.580 said that the decision to close this case left her feeling like she was on a first-class flight
00:38:30.180 on a refurbished Lolita Express, which was the nickname for Epstein's private jet.
00:38:34.920 Her story is deeply heartbreaking.
00:38:37.900 Her mom had a brain tumor when she was a teenager and an aspiring ballerina.
00:38:41.960 And once she got mixed up with Epstein, Epstein told her that he knew the best surgeons in New York City,
00:38:47.860 but that if she wanted Epstein to help her mother, who was dying of cancer,
00:38:52.580 she would have to recruit other girls for him, her lawyers alleged in a lawsuit.
00:38:57.560 She told the Times,
00:38:59.240 It feels like the current cabinet is essentially erasing our voices
00:39:02.280 after years of bravery and work to find our way out of silence.
00:39:06.480 It's actually worse than silencing.
00:39:08.260 It's rewriting a narrative as if none of us existed in the first place.
00:39:12.000 What does this teach our children?
00:39:13.280 That if you are wealthy and powerful enough, you can make anything disappear?
