00:02:11.600 That's right.
00:02:12.540 Happy Spotify rap season to all who celebrate.
00:02:15.420 For users of the music streaming platform Spotify, this is the time of year when we get our route, a visual breakdown of how much and what kinds of music we spent the year listening to.
00:02:26.960 Spotify first debuted its year in music in 2015, but two years later, they added statistics about which artists and how much time Spotify users spent listening.
00:02:36.780 In 2019, artist Jewel Hamm, who was then an intern at Spotify,
00:02:41.480 designed the pleasing social media-friendly layout to communicate this data visually,
00:02:46.200 which leads us to the Spotify wrapped that takes over our social media feeds this time of year.
00:02:51.380 And it really takes over.
00:02:53.920 According to CNN, in the first hour of Spotify Wrapped's 2021 release,
00:02:58.000 the Twitter search showed the hashtag Spotify Wrapped had been used over 14,000 times.
00:03:04.480 So why do we love Spotify wrapped so much?
00:03:07.420 And what does it tell us about our online selves?
00:03:10.380 Now, we know that Spotify relies on algorithms and artificial intelligence to surface music that we might like.
00:03:15.860 It's actually one of the main draws of Spotify over other music streaming platforms.
00:03:19.980 Who doesn't like the idea of a robot curating personalized playlists for us while we sleep?
00:03:24.340 But if we're consuming music because Spotify's algorithm has picked it for us based on our habits
00:03:28.860 and what that algorithm has been able to glean about our habits and identity,
00:03:32.860 that means our Spotify rapt isn't so much a reflection of who we truly are in our heart of hearts,
00:03:37.760 as it is a reflection of who we are as defined by Spotify's AI.
00:03:42.040 They don't just show me my own tastes, preferences, and identity.
00:03:44.720 They also shape them.
00:03:46.260 So when Spotify gives me my rapt for the year, 1.00
00:03:48.480 they're not just showing me that these are the preferences of a 30-something black queer arty woman. 0.97
00:03:52.860 It's also kind of creating what that identity means. 0.94
00:03:56.400 When we post our Spotify rapt on social media,
00:03:59.300 we're trying to tell the world something about who we are.
00:04:01.700 And we're looking to see if our tastes are more impressive, more cringy, more hip, or more refined than our friends.
00:04:08.340 And in this way, Spotify has done a great job of turning surveillance, the kind of thing that many of us would be uncomfortable with in any other context,
00:04:15.600 into a fun digital personal branding opportunity.
00:04:19.400 To be clear, I am very much not above this.
00:04:22.640 And in this special holiday episode of There Are No Girls on the Internet,
00:04:26.380 I'm sitting down with my producer, Mike, to take my very first look at my own Spotify
00:04:30.980 Wrapped for the year and dig into what it says about my identity in this very weird
00:04:35.960 digital age we all find ourselves in.
00:04:38.240 I just hope it's not too embarrassing to do in this podcast.
00:04:41.200 So I really got to start this conversation by lifting up Jewel Ham, the multimedia visual
00:04:46.560 artist who created what we know as Spotify Wrapped today.
00:04:50.380 Spotify raps did exist before Jewel, but the kind of Spotify rap that we see taking over
00:04:56.920 her social media feeds, if your feed is anything like mine, Jewel really did champion when 1.00
00:05:02.580 she was an intern at Spotify in 2019.
00:05:05.660 And I feel like she really didn't get her due.
00:05:07.720 That is tale as old as time when it comes to technology, whenever there is something
00:05:11.720 cool or interesting or unique or creative, especially if it's not a hard tech thing. 0.99
00:05:17.460 nine times out of ten there is a woman and a black woman behind it so shout out to jewel also 1.00
00:05:23.200 howard university grad uh so we wouldn't even be having this conversation if not for her
00:05:28.100 it is interesting how the the wrapped is such a visual thing when we think about it because it's
00:05:33.900 it's audio right that we're listening to and it's a list of the top songs that or tracks that we've
00:05:41.100 listened to but when i think about rap i think about a list that looks aesthetically good is a
00:05:47.460 tailor-made for social media that I think that's really what made it a thing that people talk about
00:05:52.640 oh absolutely and I think like that's something that's so funny about Spotify wrapped I even feel
00:06:00.300 a little bit weird making this episode because I feel like Spotify wrapped posting it on social
00:06:04.500 media is a little bit like that old George Carlin bit where my stuff is stuff and everybody else's
00:06:10.340 stuff is shit like everybody thinks their Spotify raps has something interesting or unique about 0.77
00:06:14.860 them personally. And then nobody actually wants to look at anybody else's Spotify rap. You're just 0.99
00:06:19.620 like, oh, good for you. You listen to Tame Impala. Well done. But when you post your own, you feel
00:06:24.180 like you're really saying something about who you are as a person. And kudos to Spotify because
00:06:29.240 that is some really good marketing that they have been able to make it so that people feel so
00:06:36.940 like it really says something about who they are when they post this on their social media feed.
00:06:43.260 it's true and as like a data person i really was thinking about like what it said about me like my
00:06:50.320 rap is crazy this year i was so surprised at what was there uh
00:06:56.280 but i think it was like a it's not like it's a representative sample of what i've been listening
00:07:03.240 to during the year it's a sample of what i've been listening to on spotify so it's like what
00:07:07.980 what do I use Spotify for? I use it to play albums and I use it to create stations. I used to hate
00:07:14.360 the idea of just trusting an algorithm to choose media for me to listen to. But I guess at some
00:07:20.360 point during the pandemic, I just completely said fuck it and went with it. And it's actually great. 1.00
00:07:24.840 They do an amazing job of just creating a playlist of songs that I want to hear based on
00:07:31.480 something that I put up there. Okay, so I have so much to say about this. First of all, it is so
00:07:36.140 funny so as we know spotify is definitely algorithmically driven and so it's like oh uh
00:07:42.360 looks like you've spent a lot of time listening to sad ass bo burnham songs this year and it's like 0.80
00:07:46.900 that's what you fucking service me algorithm you know you know that's what i listen to because 0.93
00:07:51.520 you've been servicing it to me this whole year so absolutely true it is the it's like the the kind 0.99
00:07:58.640 of cheeky little like oh it looks like you spent a lot of time listening to blah it's like they know
00:08:04.100 because their algorithm surfaces it to you.
00:08:06.920 So absolutely true.
00:08:08.660 And I do think this year, you know,
00:08:11.040 I'm going to dig into my own Spotify raft in a minute,
00:08:13.620 which I hope is not embarrassing.
00:08:16.060 But I do think in pre-pandemic,
00:08:21.440 I would definitely be excited
00:08:23.620 to show my Spotify raft on social media.
00:08:26.400 Even though I just said, like,
00:08:27.660 people post their Spotify raft on social media
00:08:29.880 and does anybody really care?
00:08:31.260 I definitely was not above that
00:08:32.660 and definitely did it and like we'll do it this year as well but I pre-pandemic I was much prouder
00:08:40.000 of the music because I feel like it said something different about me I feel like 2020 and especially
00:08:46.520 2021 weird years I don't know what they say about me I feel like it's like wow what a weird year
00:08:53.000 I've had I can't even tell you if I listen to a lot of music some of the stats on my Spotify rap
00:08:59.100 I'm like, did I really listen to that song this much?
00:09:00.960 Like, that seems weird.
00:09:02.480 I just think it's a weird year.
00:09:04.240 And as we experience things in our real life, like the pandemic and the insurrection and
00:09:09.780 like other real life crises, it is so interesting to see how that is reflected through data
00:09:18.560 points that we consumed on a digital interface.
00:09:21.940 It's very interesting.
00:09:22.740 And I feel like, yeah, pre-pandemic, I would have said my Spotify rep says something about
00:09:28.000 me.
00:09:28.340 I don't know what it is, but something this year, especially, I'm like, I don't even know if I can if I trust this because it seems so out of whack with how I feel and who I am.
00:09:38.420 Been a weird year.
00:09:40.380 Yeah, it's been a weird year.
00:09:42.540 So should I get into my Spotify wrapped?
00:09:46.800 Yeah, I think you should.
00:09:47.800 I think, you know, it's at the end of the year.
00:09:51.520 It's December.
00:09:52.280 It's nice to take a break from a lot of the negative stuff we often talk about.
00:09:57.180 and let's just talk about some music.
00:09:59.100 Let's talk about some music.
00:10:00.180 So this is, I'm going to dig into this.
00:10:01.800 I guess we should get into it.
00:10:03.680 Yeah.
00:10:04.300 If you recognize that,
00:10:05.360 that it's actually my first number one.
00:10:10.480 Okay.
00:10:11.060 I thought it was clever.
00:10:12.440 It was all right.
00:10:13.240 So I'm going to give you all my top three.
00:10:16.680 My number one played song of 2021
00:10:19.620 is Doja Cat's Get Into It.
00:10:22.320 And honestly, I'm not mad at it.
00:10:24.680 I love Doja Cat.
00:10:26.200 she could be a little problematic but you know she's my she i'm i'm i like her uh get into it
00:10:32.780 is definitely um a song that i i listen to pretty frequently and it's not surprising to me that it's
00:10:39.780 i'm a little surprised it's my number one but i'm not mad at it i'll take it i feel like doja cat
00:10:45.760 has songs that just get in your head yes that is absolutely true i spent probably a year
00:10:53.340 talking about how I wasn't a cat.
00:10:58.260 I was a cow moo, if you know that Doja Cat song.
00:11:01.620 So definitely Doja Cat, earworms.
00:11:04.540 Does she have a lot going on on TikTok? 0.82
00:11:07.060 Oh, her being my number one,
00:11:08.480 it's definitely the TikTok influence on my listening habits.
00:11:11.860 A couple of other songs that are big on my Spotify wrapped,
00:11:14.720 Pink Pantherous, another musician who was huge on TikTok,
00:11:18.140 who was in my Spotify wrapped.
00:11:19.540 But The Anxiety and Willow Smith, that song.
00:11:22.540 meet me at our spot huge on tiktok i'm sorry for just singing i know that probably sounded bad but
00:11:28.600 uh yeah i definitely see the tiktok influence on my uh spotify rap definitely a lot of songs i
00:11:36.860 i didn't know before i heard on tiktok and then found on spotify and saved and listened to over
00:11:42.620 and over and over again in 2021 apparently so so now we've got the tiktok algorithm driving what
00:11:49.600 you see which then drives what you listen to on spotify well yeah i often feel like the algorithms
00:11:55.740 are working in tandem it's like the tiktok algorithms algorithms got me the spotify
00:12:00.860 algorithms got me it's like an intersecting algorithm i'm just a slave to whatever they
00:12:05.540 surface to me and i'm just like yes give me more yes that'll be a new area of intersectionality
00:12:13.480 of like how the algorithms yes honestly speaking of bo burnham he's got this line
00:12:18.820 in inside where it's like, daddy made some content just for you. So open wide. That's
00:12:24.460 kind of how I feel. Just like, yes, give it to me. Give it to me. All right. So let's
00:12:31.220 get into my number two on my Spotify rap, which is a little bit of an outlier. It is
00:12:38.120 the song Jet by Wings. If you are a listener who is in your 20s or early 30s, you're probably
00:12:44.820 like i don't know what this is i think people know wings i don't i don't think people know wings
00:12:50.960 so for people who don't know wings wings is a was an offshoot band of the beatles started by paul
00:12:58.120 paul mccartney sir paul mccartney in the 80s uh this song came out in like 1987 so definitely not
00:13:06.020 a current hit i have a soft spot for it i feel like people get down on wings i really have a
00:13:13.300 soft spot for wings and fun fact uh this was not the only wing song to make an appearance on my
00:13:19.420 spotify raft which i don't even really know what to make of i think you really like wings i guess
00:13:25.260 so and also when i was a kid my dad would sing this song to me because he said that jet was a
00:13:31.400 nickname for bridget it is not that song is not about a girl named bridget but uh i believed that
00:13:38.100 when i was young i could see it would be appealing to think that it was that that paul was just
00:13:42.880 singing to a girl named Bridget.
00:13:46.000 Yeah, it really was.
00:13:47.760 And so it's a song that has a,
00:13:49.340 it's, I'm almost embarrassed
00:13:51.260 that it's as high as it is,
00:13:52.920 but, you know, what can I say?
00:13:54.280 I like Wings.
00:13:55.180 I like Wings.
00:13:55.760 You know what?
00:13:56.240 And I got two Wings songs
00:13:57.340 on the Spotify rap,
00:13:58.600 and I'm not ashamed.
00:14:00.380 Yeah, nothing to be ashamed of.
00:14:02.540 It's a pandemic.
00:14:03.600 Do what you gotta do.
00:14:04.300 It's a pandemic.
00:14:05.220 Listen to as much Wings as you need to
00:14:07.080 to get you through this pandemic.
00:14:08.440 Listen to whatever you want.
00:14:09.540 Like, don't be ashamed
00:14:10.580 of your Spotify rap.
00:14:11.780 Listen to whatever you want
00:14:12.680 in this pandemic whatever you need to get you through my number three song on spotify rap is
00:14:17.160 again is another tiktok classic nobody by mitski uh that was like a little bit of a tiktok meme
00:14:25.120 and again i'm i'm kind of grateful for tiktok as i've gotten into it as a platform like i feel like
00:14:30.920 i hear new music all the time that i wouldn't have heard uh you know being someone who is
00:14:36.260 we'll say a bit older than the typical tiktok demographic uh getting insight into different
00:14:42.520 kinds of music has been really interesting so yeah of my top three two of them are definitely
00:14:47.760 tiktok uh tiktok algorithm chosen for me you have to give me some tips on how to use tiktok because
00:14:55.580 mine is entirely animals which like i like animals i like funny animal content but
00:15:01.580 i'd like something else in there but it doesn't serve me any music how how do you get it to serve
00:15:07.460 your music. I don't know. I guess I just, the algorithm gods have chosen me to get Doja Cat
00:15:13.960 all the time on TikTok. So a couple of other things to note from my Spotify rap. One is that
00:15:23.520 I was definitely on my black girl feeling myself shit. A very overrepresented person on my Spotify 0.99
00:15:30.360 rap was Megan Thee Stallion, specifically Megan Thee Stallion's thought shit. And I remember, 0.95
00:15:36.060 I don't know if this is weird to say, when There Are No Girls on the Internet won the Shorty Award for our miniseries on disinformation, that was really when Megan Thee Stallion's thought shit creeped into my Spotify plays more. 1.00
00:15:49.460 She has this line where she says, bitch, I'm the shit per the recording academy. 0.99
00:15:54.880 And when we won the Shorty Award, that really was like a line that I identified with as like, oh, we also are the shit per a recording academy or a award. 1.00
00:16:05.060 Shorty Academy. 0.99
00:16:05.920 A Shorty Academy. 0.89
00:16:06.960 Yeah, I'll take it.
00:16:08.080 Yeah, still an academy.
00:16:10.500 And it really makes sense because my, according to Spotify Wrapped, the mood for my music that I listened to in 2021 was confident and bold.
00:16:19.380 And so I think I got Megan Thee Stallion to thank for that.
00:16:25.940 Let's take a quick break.
00:16:26.980 Behind every night spent making the kids' lunches, there's a lot of suspense.
00:16:37.320 Will they finally eat the veggies?

00:16:40.840 Will the lunchbox come home empty, half full, or come home at all?

00:17:38.800 This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters,
00:17:45.220 pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse.
00:17:51.280 I'm Eli Rallo, and every week we're connecting the dots between books,
00:17:54.960 the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
00:17:58.380 I'm going to have to look up this story.
00:18:00.280 I'm obsessed.
00:18:01.020 So obsessed.
00:18:01.960 From best-selling authors and your favorite book talk creators
00:18:04.580 to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table.
00:18:07.920 It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters,
00:18:13.900 then that is a Trojan horse.
00:18:15.780 Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations,
00:18:19.400 or a community of readers who love to think a little too much,
00:18:23.320 you're in the right place.
00:18:24.980 Listen to Pro Society on the iHeartRadio app,
00:18:27.940 Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:18:30.920 See you between the pages.
00:18:33.020 When I was 14 years old,
00:18:35.280 I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months.
00:18:38.800 I survived, and I've spent my life exploring
00:18:41.500 how other people survive what should have destroyed them.
00:18:45.080 I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor Files. 0.70
00:18:48.720 I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything.
00:18:57.320 Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable.
00:19:01.580 I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me.
00:19:06.140 I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming.
00:19:13.560 They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
00:19:17.380 But these aren't stories about what's taken from them.
00:19:21.040 They're stories about what it takes to make it out alive.
00:19:24.640 Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:19:36.500 And we're back.
00:19:38.100 Another artist that I was not surprised to see but makes a lot of sense was DMX.
00:19:42.660 I was a huge DMX fan when I was a kid.
00:19:46.240 Loved DMX.
00:19:47.380 And DMX died in 2021, and I will never forget it.
00:19:51.900 It was a day where I had back-to-back-to-back-to-back meetings and calls and Zooms, like professional
00:19:57.060 meetings, and I got the push notification on my phone that DMX had passed away.
00:20:01.880 And all through these meetings where I had to have my, like, fake Zoom voice on, you
00:20:06.980 know, that fake enthusiastic voice that you do when you're on Zooms and you kind of want
00:20:10.760 to die, but you've got three more.
00:20:12.560 I had to keep that voice on wanting so badly to do nothing but blast DMX and I remember when the
00:20:19.980 final call happened at like 6 30 I was like okay thanks guys and then I turned off my computer
00:20:26.440 and I blasted X gonna give it to you which is my favorite DMX song and so it's not surprising to
00:20:31.660 me that DMX is so heavily in my Spotify rap because I remember when he died and it really
00:20:36.920 it hit me hard and I I listened to a lot of DMX I guess yeah I feel like everybody in America
00:20:42.540 I was listening to DMX after that.
00:20:45.100 Was X going to give it to you in a movie?
00:20:47.020 I feel like.
00:20:48.400 I know exactly what you're thinking of.
00:20:49.820 It's in an episode of Rick and Morty.
00:20:51.660 That's why you're thinking of it.
00:20:54.260 Wasn't it a movie?
00:20:55.620 It was definitely, it probably was,
00:20:58.000 but I know what you're remembering it from.
00:21:00.460 Okay, you're right.
00:21:01.140 It was Rick and Morty.
00:21:02.440 Another song on my Spotify rap list
00:21:04.040 that I was not surprised to see at all
00:21:05.360 is Daft Punk's Georgiou. 0.98
00:21:07.320 That is a song that I deeply, deeply, deeply fuck with.
00:21:11.200 Whenever I have a podcast interview where I want to edit it to bring a certain kind of tenderness or a certain kind of beauty or a certain kind of meaning, I listen to that song because it's a song of a really famous producer basically telling his life story of how he got into music, how he got into producing. 0.77
00:21:32.540 and it's so lovingly edited that it's such a good reminder of the power of listening to someone tell
00:21:40.980 their own story in their own words my whole life I've always had a thing for listening to someone
00:21:47.800 tell their own story in their own words and I feel like that was a much of a in terms of music
00:21:52.320 that was a much bigger thing kind of back in the day in the 90s you know spoken word I've always
00:21:57.780 If it's someone giving a speech or explaining something with a little bit of sound design around it, love it.
00:22:05.020 A couple of other examples of that would be Mutual Slump by DJ Shadow, where it's DJ Shadow's then-girlfriend just talking about how much she loved.
00:22:12.780 Remember Xanadu, the roller skating?
00:22:14.960 How much she loved Xanadu?
00:22:16.400 Love it.
00:22:17.880 Everybody's free to wear sunscreen, the Baz Luhrmann thing, where he's like, okay, graduates, no matter what you do, wear sunscreen.
00:22:26.260 screen. Little Fluffy Clouds by The Orb, where it's just a beautiful voiceover of a woman 0.88
00:22:34.660 describing what the clouds and the skies were like when she was young. You know, when people
00:22:39.160 make podcasts, if you're doing an interview in the field, you often have to get levels. And so
00:22:44.020 you might ask the subject a question, you know, what did you have for breakfast? So that you can
00:22:47.820 check the levels. And I always, from that song, I always asked, because of that song, I always asked,
00:22:54.460 What were the skies like when you were young?
00:22:56.160 And the kind of answers that you get when you ask somebody,
00:22:58.800 what were the skies like when you were young, is really interesting.
00:23:02.060 I was once interviewing a French migrant, and he said,
00:23:05.200 I never saw the skies. I don't know.
00:23:07.060 And I remember thinking that was such a powerful answer.
00:23:13.120 More after a quick break.
00:23:20.400 Behind every night spent making the kids' lunches,
00:23:22.960 there's a lot of suspense.
00:23:24.460 Will they finally eat the veggies?
00:23:26.000 Will the pesto survive the first bite?
00:23:28.040 Will the lunchbox come home empty, half full, or come home at all?
00:23:31.940 And will you finish Episode 8 before you're done slicing the cucumbers?

00:26:23.960 Let's get right back into it.
00:26:26.020 I have always had a thing for someone explaining something that's meaningful to them with beautiful sound design.
00:26:34.640 It will always be something that feels right in my brain.
00:26:38.800 Yeah, those songs were all like podcasts.
00:26:41.340 I feel like spoken word tracks of the 90s were the first podcast.
00:26:47.280 Like, write in.
00:26:50.440 Let me know what you think.
00:26:51.400 This is my big theory.
00:26:53.140 Spoken word tracks of the 90s were the first podcast.
00:26:56.980 Somebody proved me wrong.
00:26:59.000 Can you give us a little taste of yours, Spotify raft?
00:27:02.280 Mine?
00:27:03.080 Oh, no.
00:27:05.640 Just no.
00:27:07.800 Immediately no.
00:27:08.740 no it's uh what was on there i feel like the early 2000s are gonna call me and want their
00:27:18.740 music back so let's just skip it so for better or for worse that is what my spotify says i spent my
00:27:27.320 year consuming and to me it kind of shows that i was bouncing back and forth between the new
00:27:32.120 you know the tiktok field songs taking over my earbuds and the old the reliable songs i grew up
00:27:38.240 with that have stuck with me. I think it's a fair reflection of the year I've had. A little all over
00:27:43.400 the place, to be sure, and perpetually caught between looking to the familiar to find comfort
00:27:47.880 while also trying to look toward the future, whatever that holds. So this is where you come in.
00:27:54.020 What was your Spotify wrapped like this year? And what do you feel like it says about you?
