00:02:03.660 I'm Bridget Todd, and this is There Are No Girls on the Internet.
00:02:06.400 we've talked a lot on this show about social media amateur detectives and how dangerous they
00:02:13.300 can be and if you're on tiktok you might have seen a good example of what i mean play out in
00:02:17.760 real time on tiktok this week on tiktok sabrina pratter's bio reads i'm a 34 year old male who
00:02:24.100 has been dressing up since i was little working on coming out sabrina likes to film videos dancing
00:02:29.760 in high-heeled boots tight jeans flashy blouses and sometimes a ponytail shoulder length wig
00:02:35.340 in what looks like a visibly old, deteriorating home.
00:02:39.160 There's ladders and buckets in the background
00:02:41.360 and stains on the floor.
00:02:43.240 And in a few of the videos of Sabrina dancing,
00:02:45.500 there's a monitor in the background
00:02:46.660 with grainy images on them.
00:02:48.660 Now, maybe these videos look a little bit weird,
00:02:51.380 especially if you've never been inside
00:02:52.840 a really old building before.
00:02:54.980 And at first, people on TikTok were using Sabrina's videos
00:02:57.860 to make jokes about being in sad-looking locations.
00:03:01.420 Things like, a night out at your hometown bar
00:03:03.840 the night before Thanksgiving.
00:03:05.340 But increasingly, people on TikTok started accusing Sabrina of being up to something more sinister than just dancing. 0.99
00:03:12.480 TikTok's algorithm surfaced videos on my For You page, some of which had tens of thousands of views, accusing Sabrina of being a serial killer.
00:03:21.300 The evidence? Amateur sleuths on TikTok said those stains on the floor were actually bloodstains.
00:03:27.980 Those difficult-to-see grainy images on the monitors behind Sabrina?
00:03:32.340 Well, they said that those were video feeds
00:03:34.220 so Sabrina could keep tabs on captive victims. 0.91
00:03:38.100 One video even said that Sabrina's flashy heels and outfits 1.00
00:03:41.160 were the clothing belonging to women
00:03:43.360 being held captive in the old home.
00:03:46.000 Before it was shut down,
00:03:47.480 I scrolled a Facebook page
00:03:48.860 full of hundreds of wannabe detectives
00:03:50.960 making baseless claims and accusations
00:03:53.000 about Sabrina and Sabrina's family.
00:03:55.600 Well, those people finally got to the bottom
00:03:58.460 of this conspiracy theory.
00:03:59.580 and get ready to have your mind blown. 1.00
00:04:03.480 It turns out, Sabrina works in construction 1.00
00:04:05.800 and purchases old homes to renovate.
00:04:08.620 And Sabrina likes filming dancing TikToks
00:04:11.280 while taking breaks from work,
00:04:12.820 just like so many other people
00:04:14.840 trying to have fun on the platform.
00:04:17.020 Now, Sabrina made a video on TikTok 0.91
00:04:18.460 trying to put these conspiracy theories to rest 0.99
00:04:20.540 while sobbing, saying,
00:04:22.740 I didn't do anything wrong
00:04:23.880 and I'm sick of being hurt by this.
00:04:25.820 I'm just like anyone else.
00:04:27.700 I just want to be loved and accepted
00:04:29.100 and I'm not. I'm getting treated worse than anyone coming out like me. I would have posted
00:04:34.520 Sabrina's audio here, but honestly, it's really hard to listen to because it's just so sad.
00:04:39.440 And I think it shows that there is a baseline assumption around who the internet is for
00:04:43.500 and who it isn't for, and who could expect to feel safe and seen there. People compared Sabrina
00:04:50.060 to Buffalo Bill, the serial killer from Silence of the Lambs, just because Sabrina wears flashy 1.00
00:04:55.140 blouses and high heels. It should go without saying that that does not mean someone is a serial killer
00:05:00.660 and that comparison alone is so cruel. It also comes off as really classist. Just because Sabrina
00:05:07.000 is spending time in a dilapidated home, that does not mean that someone must be being held against
00:05:12.080 their will there. And while some users have taken down their videos from TikTok making these kinds
00:05:17.680 of accusations about Sabrina, as of me recording this, there are still plenty of videos on that
00:05:23.360 platform, racking up views, who still maintain that something unseemly is going on in Sabrina's
00:05:28.520 home, even after Sabrina tearfully spoke out. So where does it end? Now, I get why engaging in a
00:05:35.460 conspiracy theory online can seem fun. Who doesn't like the feeling of figuring out a puzzle? But
00:05:41.000 when thousands of people are using someone's actual life for this kind of cruel entertainment,
00:05:45.880 it's not just harmless fun. And I get that thinking that you're putting together the clues
00:05:50.400 to bring down a serial killer from your phone,
00:05:52.640 it's probably a lot more exciting to believe
00:05:54.660 than the reality that there are people out there
00:05:56.840 that are living very different lives from our own
00:05:58.900 and that that doesn't make them any less human
00:06:01.180 or mean they deserve to be cruelly harassed
00:06:04.880 just for making videos on the internet.
