00:00:00.000 Today's episode of Under the Influence is coming to you ad-free. Ad-free. Except for
00:00:06.760 this one thing. This one thing. Because if I learned anything from influencers, it's
00:00:10.740 that you have to sell yourself because no one else will. So once in a while, I'm going
00:00:15.360 to do episodes where the only ad here is for my new novel, The Sicilian Inheritance. It
00:00:21.800 is a bananas murder mystery set in Sicily, loosely based on the actual real-life murder
00:00:28.000 of my great, great grandmother, Lorenza Marsala. I do want to tell everyone that a lot of you
00:00:34.420 have been asking about my sub stack over the influence where we do all kinds of behind the
00:00:39.020 scenes things. And I'm offering lifetime paid subscriptions to the sub stack for anyone who
00:00:45.400 pre-orders the Sicilian inheritance. Anyone, anyone just DM me or email me the receipt and
00:00:51.600 you get me for life, which is, which is fun. I wish I could also send you cheese for life.
00:00:55.680 Now, I wanted to include all of the things in this book. There is travel, there is adventure,
00:01:01.540 there is murder, there is mystery, there is delicious food, lots of cheese, lots of salty
00:01:05.520 cheese. There is non-trashy, non-cringy sex because I read too many books with trashy and 0.97
00:01:10.920 cringy sex and I don't like it. And there's just the right amount of feminism and taken on the 1.00
00:01:15.640 patriarchy. So I would love it if you would pre-order, pre-order the book. We have to do that 0.60
00:01:20.080 because there's no other marketing for books. I have to do commercials for my own book and that's
00:01:23.840 fine. I love all of you and I love this book, so I'm here for it. Now please enjoy an ad-free
00:01:29.240 episode of Under the Influence. Breaking developing story here. Yesterday afternoon,
00:01:41.380 Hannah Nealman, the one and only ballerina farm, the twirling homesteader, delivered her eighth
00:01:48.780 baby. Eight babies. Will it be the last? Who knows? Maybe not. Probably not. Babies can be big
00:01:57.920 business. Now, my friend Sarah Peterson, who writes the Substack in Pursuit of Clean Countertops 1.00
00:02:03.760 and wrote the incredible book Momfluenced, is the one who broke this news to me. She broke it with
00:02:09.520 a text to tell me that Ballerina Farm, Hannah, should we call her Hannah or should we call her 1.00
00:02:14.100 Ballerina Farm. I don't know. To tell me that Ballerina Farm's mother is the one who broke
00:02:19.980 the news on her social media, not Ballerina Farm's social media. So this got me thinking so many
00:02:27.720 things, so many things. And as a former celebrity reporter, this is what I find most interesting.
00:02:34.340 Why do we care? Why do we care? Why do we care about strangers' babies at all? They're not our
00:02:41.760 babies. They're not our friends' babies. We don't know these babies. We will never see these babies,
00:02:47.600 except on Instagram, where we will see everything they do for the rest of their lives because
00:02:51.420 their parents have no boundaries. But why are we so invested? And we are. Oh, we are. Last time
00:02:58.460 Ballerina Farm posted about the birth of a baby, it got something like 8.5 million views.
00:03:04.400 yeah yeah that's a lot that is a lot a lot of viewership you know it's about what monday night
00:03:12.640 football gets during a bad game just i'm throwing those i like to throw numbers out there i like to
00:03:19.080 throw numbers at you to discuss this development this breaking news and also to analyze why we
00:03:25.080 care about not just influencer babies but celebrity babies in general and how we got to this point
00:03:30.900 of fetishizing celebrity babies i'm gonna call up sarah hey hey oh my gosh so so much so much
00:03:42.460 to talk about you texted me yesterday afternoon i have to know am i the first person that you
00:03:48.640 texted with this news or did you text everyone in in your in your address book you are the first
00:03:53.860 and really one of two people I texted.
00:03:57.360 It makes me feel like a twirling, homesteading millionaire is what it feels like.
00:04:02.940 I mean, I didn't think anybody else would appreciate the news like you, so.
00:04:07.280 They wouldn't. They wouldn't. And we are here reporting this breaking news for people today
00:04:11.180 because we are essentially the Woodward and Bernstein of influencers.
00:04:16.020 We are on the front line and we're delivering the news as it comes in.
00:04:20.720 And you know what? I want to be Dustin Hoffman in the movie version.
00:04:23.860 because i think that he's the more fun one i would hang out with him over robert redford any day
00:04:28.520 i mean i'm fine with that robert redford he's classically cool so i'll go with it look and
00:04:36.200 also like i wouldn't kick either of them out of bed i'm just saying but whatever you texted me
00:04:41.580 last night yesterday afternoon and said that her mom bro it was it was almost a cryptic text
00:04:47.400 i know you're like well because her mom broke the news okay yeah so okay so i like have been
00:04:55.480 checking you know daily obviously for baby updates and it was 4 30 i was like about to log off i
00:05:02.580 checked daniel i checked hannah nothing yes who is on instagram at fog uh hog fathering at hog
00:05:10.580 um yeah so then i was like wait a second she does have a sister and i was like there's no way this
00:05:17.320 sister would you know post the news but maybe like i could find a hint of what was happening
00:05:22.360 on the sister's timeline right right in her stories just casually is a photo of hannah
00:05:29.560 and the new baby it says something like happy news baby girl so i'm like how is this happening
00:05:36.140 and then i check again and she had reposted or reshared a story that hannah's mother had
00:05:43.000 originally shared on her instagram page and still this is i just sarah i'm gonna interrupt you this
00:05:49.120 is your water gate sure i mean it's just staring at my computer in shock like i was like there has
00:05:55.260 to be a mistake i kept refreshing i was like they would not break the news before hannah
00:06:00.580 but they did right but they did both staring at each other and they just believe right they did
00:06:07.620 And I just needed to talk about it with somebody because I just can't make sense of it.
00:06:14.240 Yeah.
00:06:14.540 So her mom has a decent number of followers, more than 50,000 followers, but it's no 8 0.58
00:06:21.820 million followers.
00:06:23.340 And she essentially did live update the stories. 0.99
00:06:27.440 She's got Hannah getting into the car.
00:06:30.060 There's a little bit of tension.
00:06:31.680 Like, is Hannah going to give birth in the car?
00:06:33.720 She actually says that.
00:06:34.560 She's like, Hannah thinks she's going to give birth in the car.
00:06:36.180 I mean, there's a shot out of the windshield while she's driving where they're on the highway, I guess, following Hannah while she's having contractions.
00:06:45.640 But here's what I'm not clear on.
00:06:48.120 The photo very much looks like it's from the house.
00:06:51.880 And she, you know, she tries to have home births like historically.
00:06:56.860 Where's she going? 1.00
00:06:57.660 Is she trying to get home? 0.99
00:06:59.320 I think she's trying to get home.
00:07:00.980 That's what I think.
00:07:01.660 I think she was trying to get home.
00:07:03.040 Maybe she was trying to get home.
00:07:04.240 We don't know.
00:07:05.000 We don't know.
00:07:05.520 we don't we don't so okay yeah so and then and then the next picture that her mom posts
00:07:11.500 is of hannah holding the brand new it's a freshie a freshie baby yes yes yes yes you know that you
00:07:18.220 have a freshie baby when they're still covered in that white gack vernix vernix the grossest 0.71
00:07:24.360 word of all time it's a bad word that's why i like to call it white gack and so yeah so then
00:07:32.460 then hannah then hannah is holding this freshie baby yeah and that's all we know that that's that's
00:07:39.800 what we know what i do think is interesting is that my mother would never think to live post
00:07:45.140 my birth and she wouldn't know she wouldn't know how let's be honest um nor would my husband
00:07:51.620 nor nor would i right so i just i find i find it very interesting that hannah's family ballerina
00:08:02.980 farms family do that they are are so invested in posting for her well i yeah the big question in
00:08:15.240 my head is was this an orchestrated you know effort and i have to believe it was i can't fathom
00:08:22.020 that they would have like gone off script and posted without hannah's sanction from like
00:08:28.580 ballerina farm headquarters and like the i guess the idealist in me is hoping or i don't know not
00:08:36.180 hoping that's not the right word but is surmising that maybe she did it so she could actually take
00:08:41.660 a break from sharing live updates in this of her lifetime yeah i don't know i don't know like a
00:08:49.720 brief break i don't know i would love to think that i really would i i now that we've gone through
00:08:57.120 the very important breaking news yeah which i wrote this in a sub stack last night which i
00:09:02.820 only wrote that as you texted me the breaking news it's uh woodward but i wrote this i like i
00:09:09.900 almost feel like we should start a magazine an actual print magazine called influencer weekly
00:09:16.000 this is not so crazy because when i worked in the magazine industry i had publishers 0.51
00:09:20.140 who came up with the stupidest ideas that were successful or this one old publisher who was like 0.89
00:09:28.060 he's an old man it was what this one old man publisher who goes you know people magazine is 1.00
00:09:33.320 so successful let's just copy people magazine but make it about old people
00:09:38.140 so let's put betty white on the cover and johnny carson we can even put dead people on the cover
00:09:47.280 oh okay okay and they made that magazine and i believe it's still being printed today so maybe
00:09:54.340 they would give us four dollars to make our influencer weekly where people can catch up on
00:09:59.400 lives or their favorite influencers without doom scrolling yes it would help alleviate like
00:10:05.840 instagram addictions but people could still get the dopamine hits of celebrity watching
00:10:11.580 i think it's i think it's a i mean win-win really right and maybe we'll make four whole dollars off
00:10:17.640 of it maybe 450 maybe that ain't nothing that ain't nothing but i bring i bring this up i
00:10:25.840 I'm comparing Mallorina Farm to a celebrity because, frankly, she has a lot more followers than a lot of celebrities. 0.99
00:10:33.380 She has a bigger audience. 0.96
00:10:35.300 I fully believe that influencers are the new celebrity. 0.99
00:10:40.080 They're the new reality television star.
00:10:42.020 We are paying attention to them in the same way that in the 2000s when I worked in these gossip magazines, we paid attention to celebrities.
00:10:51.920 and yeah i just i went down this deep rabbit hole last night about the ballerina farm birth and then
00:11:00.780 i felt guilty because i want to get off the i want to get off the instagram more yeah freaking time
00:11:05.580 limit yeah but i kept thinking why do i care why do i care about this woman giving birth who i don't
00:11:12.100 know and this newborn baby that that i am never gonna see and it reminded me that i once did a
00:11:18.800 deep analysis of why we care about celebrity babies and just how much money celebrity babies
00:11:27.580 were worth at the time. So last night in the middle of the night, I crept creepily downstairs
00:11:35.920 to find a copy of this book that I wrote about how celebrities make money. It's called Celebrity
00:11:42.000 Inc. I wrote it a thousand years ago. The first chapter of the book is called Shiloh Jolie-Pitt,
00:11:46.440 the magazine market and the bull run for celebrity baby pictures that was a big one
00:11:53.760 like i distinctly remember yeah she was a big like surrey cruise was right up there around that time
00:12:01.380 and jayla's twins max and emma oh okay okay yeah yeah the truth is that you know 10 15 years ago
00:12:11.040 these celebrity magazines made so much money off of these baby pictures they paid so much money
00:12:17.980 and they made so much money their sales went gonzo i actually i used to be able to do math
00:12:24.060 so i did did math when i did this analysis well and there was just there was a shit ton
00:12:30.920 of scrooge mcduck style money to be made from celebrity babies and now i believe that influencer
00:12:39.020 babies are the new attention-grabbing moneymaker. So what I want to do is I'm actually, I'm going
00:12:49.180 to read a little bit from this history because I think it's interesting to see where we were,
00:12:54.800 to figure out where we are and where we're going. So I'm just going to read a little bit
00:12:58.700 of the boom, the boom in celebrity baby pictures and how they made money.
00:13:05.480 Yep.
00:13:06.640 Editors of Celebrity Weekly magazines would later say it was a little like a drug deal.
00:13:11.500 The day they were led into a dark office and shown the first pictures of Shiloh Jolie Pitt.
00:13:18.000 The question posed by the owners of the pictures to the editors was deceptively simple.
00:13:23.980 Also impossible to answer with any confidence.
00:13:26.940 How much were these photos worth?
00:13:29.080 Oh, and I just want to add here that it was Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie selling their own baby
00:13:34.780 pictures, by the way. Yeah, yeah. These were not paparazzi photos. They were selling them
00:13:39.540 themselves. Okay, back to the story. Over at Us Weekly, Peter Grossman looked at his editor-in-chief
00:13:46.720 Janice Minn the moment that this pregnancy had been announced. This is it, he said. We should
00:13:52.900 just quit. See, the first look at Pitt and Jilly's baby girl was considered the greatest
00:13:59.500 possible get for one of the many Celebrity Weekly magazines. Darren Lyons, then chairman of Big
00:14:06.560 Pictures, the firm behind the celebrity photography website MrPaparazzi.com, understood the rules of
00:14:13.300 supply and demand. He knew the stars were ginning up more attention, and not less, by taking up
00:14:19.060 residence in this poor corner of Africa. I don't think they could have given people
00:14:24.040 more of an appetite to see this creature, Lyons said. It is the most anticipated baby since Jesus
00:14:30.440 Christ. In the months prior to the birth, Jolie and Pitt struck a mutually beneficial deal with
00:14:38.040 the photo agency Getty Images to broker a sale of the first photographs of their child. This way,
00:14:43.900 the famous parents could use Getty as a middleman to avoid the ugliness of a direct exchange
00:14:48.940 of cash for personal photographs. A month after Shiloh's birth, the editors of all the major
00:14:54.740 celebrity magazines were driven to Getty's office buildings to make a blind bid for the rights to
00:14:59.620 reproduce these pictures in their magazines. They were all quarantined into little rooms
00:15:04.840 containing only conference tables, chairs, and a snack machine. They were each given a glass of
00:15:10.540 tepid water. Separating the editors from one another was imperative because it forced each
00:15:15.840 publication to formulate their bids knowing absolutely nothing about how motivated the
00:15:21.100 competition was. It really is what I think a drug deal would be like, Rob Shooter, a former executive
00:15:26.960 editor of OK Magazine, said. You're taken into a dark room and given a taste of what you can get
00:15:32.660 before you decide what kind of money you're willing to spend. After more than an hour of
00:15:37.340 waiting, the rooms containing the magazine editors went dark. Getty had outfitted each room with a
00:15:42.240 slide projector, and now beamed the images of what many would later argue was the most beautiful
00:15:47.980 newborn they'd ever seen onto the built-in screens. Shiloh was Pitt and Jolie times 100.
00:15:56.560 Cuddling her were Pitt, embodying his sexiest man-alive status, and Jolie. No freakish tattoos
00:16:03.080 and evidence or vials of blood around her neck. As for the baby, she was, to quote all of the
00:16:08.620 dumbstruck editors who saw her that day. Impossibly gorgeous. Peter Grossman from Us Weekly choked
00:16:16.800 on his tepid water. Take the amount we were prepared to spend and double it, he thought.
00:16:24.220 People Magazine was the big winner. They outbid the competition and acquired the domestic rights
00:16:28.680 to the first pictures of Shiloh, Novell, Jolie-Pitt for a reported $3 million. Turns out it was worth
00:16:37.620 it. At the time, People was averaging sales around 1.4 million copies per week. The Shiloh
00:16:44.040 issue sold 2.1 million copies. Talk about a baby bump. Word was out. The baby picture bull run had
00:16:52.860 officially begun. People next paid Christina Aguilera a reported $2 million for photos of
00:17:00.460 her baby boy Max. Paying millions for the right to publish baby pictures was now common practice.
00:17:07.620 In March, People beat out its previous all-time high bid for the Shiloh pictures when it offered singer Jennifer Lopez and her husband Mark Anthony a reported $6 million for the first photos of twins Max and Emmy.
00:17:23.580 But if the Shiloh photos were like a street drug, Pitt and Jolie's twins were medicinal-grade heroin mixed with crack, for magazine editors.
00:17:32.200 Everyone in the business scrambled to figure out how badly they would have to blow their editorial budgets for the remaining issues of the year just to get a hold of pictures of their twins.
00:17:44.460 After more than a week of negotiations with Getty, which followed the same procurement procedure as for the Shiloh pictures, people won domestic rights for the pictures with a reported payment of $7 million.
00:17:57.160 dollars. It was estimated that in total, including the sale of international rights,
00:18:03.420 Pitt and Jolie received 14 million dollars for the photographs introducing young Vivian
00:18:09.920 Marchalin and Knox Leon to the world. It was the most expensive celebrity photo buy of all time.
00:18:19.420 That special issue sold a remarkable 2.7 million copies at a time when the average for People magazine was 1.5 million.
00:18:37.260 So now we're back.
00:18:38.800 That was the early, early 2000s, 2007 to 2013.
00:18:44.960 teen. Don't you think that the that the influencer babies are the new celebrity babies now?
00:18:51.160 Yeah. And it's it's fascinating to sort of compare the attraction, because I think with
00:18:56.780 celebrity babies, I think there was this curiosity about what two obscenely attractive humans would
00:19:05.660 create in terms of like offspring. Totally. Totally. That's why everyone wanted to see 1.00
00:19:11.260 if brad and angelina's baby was gonna be cute right and like the most gorgeous human you know
00:19:17.820 ever which is what people said when they saw when i mean yeah you just heard when those editors saw
00:19:22.620 that baby first off i love that they said that that baby was the most anticipated baby since
00:19:27.220 jesus christ it's one of the greatest lines that anyone so good has ever told me and also when they 0.93
00:19:32.980 saw the picture of of how beautiful that baby was they're like shit yeah yeah double the amount 0.99
00:19:38.620 we're willing to pay that is a good looking spawn which is so fucked up but what if it if it's ugly 0.99
00:19:45.440 some babies right i know lots are lots and so there's that with the celebrity thing and then 0.98
00:19:52.360 with the influencer curiosity i feel like i mean a lot of it is just the inherent human drama of
00:20:00.540 you know reproduction of pregnancy of childbirth um you know if you've given birth yourself
00:20:07.740 you sort of instinctually think back upon your own experiences and consciously or unconsciously
00:20:14.820 compare them to the influencers you know experiences totally willing to show ballerina
00:20:21.340 farm is willing to show a lot of it when i was reporting our very important story last night
00:20:26.560 i went back and and watched part of her birth video the last time she gave birth in the bathtub
00:20:34.660 and that baby just it looks like it slides right out of her body which for my first two they did 1.00
00:20:41.660 not slide right out the last one fell out because my vagina is the size of the grand canyon now 0.98
00:20:46.500 it fell out yeah flopped like a fish right under the bed yeah but it just yeah we do want to see 1.00
00:20:54.800 what other women are going through because that is such a universal experience right for sure 1.00
00:20:59.020 for sure and you know when it comes to hannah from ballerina farm i think there's always the 1.00
00:21:05.740 shock and awe element the sheer number of children she has and the fact that she's a lot of kids yeah
00:21:13.500 it's a lot of kids and she seems okay which is i don't think a ton of us could uh say the same
00:21:19.160 about ourselves in a similar situation no no so there's that i don't know it's it's really
00:21:28.580 interesting and it's made me certain like as i was going down the rabbit hole of hannah's mother
00:21:36.160 hannah's sister and like why do i know these things like why do i know who her mother is
00:21:41.400 why do i know who her sister is like it becomes the deeper you pursue it the more yes it does but
00:21:51.280 again i want to take it back and i think that this is going to be i think this is this is
00:21:56.360 interesting for our listeners during the height of early kardashian days why did people know who
00:22:02.000 jonathan chevin and simon huck were who were like their best friends yep yep right i just dug up
00:22:08.860 this picture no it's true just because they were hangers on to the kardashian clan yep yep and they
00:22:15.300 were almost like celebrities themselves i just dug up a picture from my 25th birthday of me like
00:22:19.860 hanging with jonathan and simon because they're the ones who were giving us all the kardashian
00:22:24.720 gossip all the time that makes sense that makes sense right and so yeah in a way it's weird that
00:22:33.360 we're even talking about this that we're even recording on this but i say this all the time
00:22:37.700 when you have an audience of 8 million people,
00:22:39.740 that's a lot of influence.
00:22:40.900 And so maybe we should.
00:22:42.500 Maybe we should be creating Influencer Weekly.
00:22:44.940 Maybe I'm changing the name of this podcast right now
00:22:47.800 to Influencer Weekly.
00:22:51.000 Yeah, it's...
00:22:52.260 I just can't keep thinking about the fact
00:22:57.160 that they shared before she did.
00:22:59.080 I know you can't.
00:23:00.020 You can't let it go.
00:23:00.940 You're never going to let it go.
00:23:01.700 I can't.
00:23:02.100 Because I'm just dying to know if it was approved.
00:23:06.260 I don't know.
00:23:06.760 I don't know.
00:23:07.120 And, of course, I'm dying to see the actual official announcement and, you know.
00:23:11.620 Maybe she's going to show the birth.
00:23:13.040 Maybe she'll show the birth again.
00:23:14.260 I don't know.
00:23:14.680 I kind of assume.
00:23:16.060 I don't know.
00:23:16.660 I don't know.
00:23:17.380 But, again, and I don't like to be too cynical.
00:23:21.020 All of this is just our own opinion.
00:23:23.120 We don't know.
00:23:23.780 We're not. 0.99
00:23:24.340 We don't know shit. 0.99
00:23:25.700 We're kind of in her house because she broadcasts everything from her house. 0.98
00:23:30.480 But we're not really there.
00:23:31.800 We're fake influencer there.
00:23:34.120 But what we do know, what we can say outside of this situation, as Woodward and Bernstein, is influencer babies are big money for influencers who have them, for advertisers, for brands, and for the social media companies generally.
00:23:52.600 so i think it is important to report on the fact that one of the biggest influencers out there
00:24:00.200 has had another baby because this does mean millions of dollars of revenue in this ecosystem
00:24:07.880 for sure and i wouldn't be surprised if her follower uh follower count you know rose pretty
00:24:13.740 precipitously um in the coming days well let's we should track that we should because i'm clearly
00:24:20.720 i'm a numbers person yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah what is it at right now can you check i i'm
00:24:25.580 checking right now um it's eight point something let me check it is 8.3 million okay it's 8.3
00:24:34.660 million let's see what it does do you know how long it takes me to get five new followers
00:24:38.440 probably as long as it takes me it's not not fast no no but but did you see a rise in
00:24:48.780 your followers when you had a baby oh oh oh 100 i got 5 000 followers um during my pregnancy
00:24:56.440 and the first month of having the baby and i didn't post many newborn photos yeah at all but

00:26:24.000 breath here you go people don't worry sarah is on it sarah is sarah is going to constantly update
00:26:31.180 I feel weird sometimes talking about influencer kids, but then the influencers post them.
00:26:36.360 So they're exploiting their children, but then are we re-exploiting them? 0.84
00:26:39.580 God, it's a freaking, it's a Mobius strip. 0.85
00:26:43.040 It is. 0.91
00:26:44.020 In this case, I don't feel as though we're talking about the person of this newborn child.
00:26:50.920 We're talking about the performance of pregnancy.
00:26:53.760 The character of this newborn child.
00:26:55.560 But we're not even talking about the newborn child.
00:26:58.020 We're talking about, like, the mechanisms with which this, you know, momfluencer juggernaut has opted to share this highly dramatic event.
00:27:09.560 All right.
00:27:09.720 Well, again, we'll stay on it.
00:27:11.700 We'll stay on it.
