00:00:00.000 class is in session hey what's up everybody and welcome to unlearn 16 class is in session today
00:00:09.320 you just get me you get me in this amazing shirt by retro kid milk red butter you guys
00:00:15.880 have a sesame street uh nostalgia about me today as i come on today it's actually wrapping up to
00:00:23.760 be the end of the school year. And I always start and try, as I've been trying all semester, to give
00:00:31.040 my graduating students advice for university and college. Do they want to listen to me? No, no,
00:00:38.280 they don't. They don't. They don't want to hear. They just want their 85, their 90. They want their
00:00:44.580 prom, their grad. They don't want to hear about next year. But these are valuable tools. So while
00:00:51.340 I'm in the educational zone. I thought I would put it here. It'll be permanent. You guys, if you're
00:00:57.940 students, you can listen to it. If you're parents, you can sit down your kids, duct tape them to a
00:01:03.820 chair and make them listen to it. This is my advice for going off to school. Now, again, it doesn't
00:01:09.920 matter. College, university, whatever the form of higher education that you're going off to,
00:01:15.740 the rules of the game are the same. And I say rules of the game because in a way,
00:01:23.060 it kind of sets you up for life in a lot of different ways. Some people think college
00:01:28.140 university doesn't prepare you for the future. We have a lot of people, the Elon Musks of the
00:01:35.260 world saying it's all garbage. And listen, I'm not saying it's for everybody. I'm not saying 0.98
00:01:41.560 it's the best possible avenue for every single person on the planet. I am saying this. I don't
00:01:47.760 think more education ever causes harm. What I think causes harm is a lack of giving a crap about 0.98
00:01:56.640 that education. So first and foremost, I want to say this. I want students to sort of get an 0.98
00:02:04.440 understanding, grasp an idea that is this. University will be whatever the student puts
00:02:14.460 into university. And I don't care about your marks, guys. I really don't. And I know you're
00:02:20.060 listening to this saying, what a crock of crap. Marks mean everything. How am I supposed to get 0.99
00:02:23.820 into a good grad program, medical school, law school? Joanna, come on. And what I'm telling
00:02:29.620 you is this the marks don't mean anything unless you take with it the actual education the actual
00:02:39.140 learning the actual passion for the curriculum and the application of that curriculum if you go
00:02:47.040 in there to get an 85 to go to grad school and then go to med school and then and then and then
00:02:51.260 and then you will always be chasing something you will never achieve and that is fulfillment
00:02:57.000 that is getting an understanding of that.
00:03:00.960 So I have some rules when you go off to school.
00:03:04.380 It's not going to be a long podcast.
00:03:05.880 I'm going to keep it short and simple, to the point.
00:03:09.360 First rule you get on campus.
00:03:11.060 Are you ready? Are you listening?
00:03:13.240 Go buy the hoodie.
00:03:14.860 I know, not everybody has money for a hoodie.
00:03:18.100 Listen, find it.
00:03:19.320 Find the money for the hoodie
00:03:20.540 and keep that hoodie for the rest of your life.
00:03:24.220 Wear that hoodie, embrace that hoodie
00:03:25.880 that is your school that is where you're going to jump into this next phase of life and if you end
00:03:30.600 up jumping into another school after that cool get their hoodie too rule number two do not under any
00:03:37.960 circumstances buy new textbooks i don't care if you have more money than elon himself do not waste
00:03:45.880 your money purchasing a new textbook every freshman on the planet runs off to the new bookstore gets
00:03:55.240 the hoodie, which I told you to buy, and then goes to the book section and pays at least
00:03:59.900 60% more than if you were to go get those books and buy them used.
00:04:06.340 That's before you even get in the class.
00:04:09.940 Number three, get to know the campus.
00:04:13.320 Figure out the cool spots.
00:04:14.980 Wander around on a day.
00:04:17.480 Get a vibe of what it is.
00:04:19.880 Wander around different buildings.
00:04:21.860 If you're in engineering, cool.
00:04:23.180 Go to literature lab.
00:04:24.700 If you're in biology, go check out the math building.
00:04:29.220 If you're in politics, go sit down and see what the theater kids are doing.
00:04:35.600 Go around that entire university because, and I'm going to say this slowly,
00:04:41.820 you are probably going to change your major at least three times.
00:04:47.380 And that's okay.
00:04:49.440 It's okay.
00:04:51.220 You're going to think, I'm panicking.
00:04:53.040 I thought I was this person.
00:04:54.120 I thought this was my goal. I thought this is what I was going to do. I thought I had my whole
00:04:57.860 life planned out. And of course, you don't. You're 17. And if you have your whole life planned out
00:05:03.600 at 17, chances are around 45, you're going to explode your head because you're going to realize
00:05:08.100 that you never took that opportunity to see whatever everybody has to offer.
00:05:14.220 Now, I know you're all going into a program and try to make that program as diverse as possible.
00:05:21.300 but your first year, you're going to have the ability to sort of be a little bit more
00:05:25.140 expansive, a little more wide ranging in your course selection. Do me a favor. Take what you
00:05:32.160 need to. I get it. There's a plan. There's a blah, blah, blah. And then take what you are drawn to.
00:05:39.460 Not necessarily what you're amazing at. Take what you read. When you sit down and you look at that
00:05:45.100 big, thick course book. Oh, by the way, I guess nobody's looking at a course book anymore.
00:05:49.080 when you type it in online and you see all the courses online, you just don't get the same kind
00:05:53.980 of weight. I want you to really take a minute and see what they have to offer. Because the fact that
00:06:01.780 we think a 17-year-old is supposed to know the next 50 years of their life is utter nonsense.
00:06:07.480 And the fact that we shove you into a tunnel vision mentality of what your education should
00:06:13.760 look like is the single most problematic thing out there because you don't even know what they
00:06:18.400 offer yet. You've gone to high school. High school is 10%, not even, high school is 1% of the vast
00:06:27.260 array of courses and professors and tutorials and all of this stuff that's going to be offered to
00:06:34.720 you. You might really like Italian literature pre-1600, 16th century. I just made that up. I
00:06:45.060 even know if that's course but i promise you it's out there somewhere you might love that that might
00:06:49.780 be your thing i'm also going to say this and your parents are going to kill me for it parents do not
00:06:54.580 beep this out because it's really important do what you love the money will come and when i say
00:07:00.980 that please understand i don't mean be lazy i don't mean do what you love and if it's to sit
00:07:09.460 at home and watch tv no no no no you need to tap into your passion what you are passionately driven
00:07:16.500 by what drives your soul and then you need to do it a hundred percent and a hundred percent doesn't
00:07:25.140 mean you party left right and center a hundred percent doesn't mean you just skip everything
00:07:28.820 so you can play varsity volleyball a hundred percent doesn't mean you do what you just got
00:07:33.700 got to do to get by because you know you got an easy teacher if you do that you're not going to
00:07:39.480 get out of it what you should and you're at that point at that point you're wasting your time
00:07:45.020 but if you do what you're passionate about and you understand the expansive nature of what you're
00:07:51.840 passionate about and all the aspects that could possibly go along with it you're going to find
00:07:56.800 out real quick there's money to be made in a whole bunch of different avenues and if tiktok
00:08:01.880 and YouTube has taught us anything. It's the fact there's a whole world of options out there.
00:08:09.700 So don't narrow it down, but don't be lazy. Now on the don't be lazy front, what am I at? Number
00:08:18.220 four? Number five? Guys, I can't even number them anymore. You're just going to have to follow me
00:08:22.020 along and make notes. The next point is going to be go to class. I know that sounds silly.
00:08:30.080 I know you're like, and post-COVID, it's going to be even more important. 0.80
00:08:35.140 Get your butt up and go to every single class and tutorial that is offered.
00:08:42.020 I'm going to go you one step further.
00:08:43.480 If there's a class you just want to listen in on and hear, you can go to that too.
00:08:48.000 Go sit in.
00:08:49.260 Go sit in.
00:08:51.340 Understand that you were there to get ideas in your head.
00:08:55.780 you're there as this tiny little sponge that now has access to hundreds of different perspectives
00:09:03.220 go get them go find out where they are go find out what drives you but go to class a lot of kids
00:09:12.660 will go to first year university and the reason why they don't do well and the reason why they
00:09:16.580 don't feel a part of the university and their marks stink and they want to go home and they
00:09:20.340 want to change programs and they don't get it and it's too hard it's because they never went
00:09:23.940 they had a nine o'clock class and they decided that partying till 2 a.m. was much more important
00:09:30.420 don't you can party listen I'm not sitting here saying you can never have a good time I'm sitting
00:09:37.240 here saying you can have a good time all you want but your job is to get your butt up on Wednesday
00:09:44.740 morning and get to politics class get to math class get to biolab I don't care what it is
00:09:50.780 get up and if you can't rally if you can't pick yourself up tired and hung over and whatever
00:09:57.740 then you don't get to party because you're not good enough
00:10:00.420 you're just not it's like that person that comes to work and says i'm sick you're not sick you're
00:10:07.020 hung over and that's embarrassing go to the bathroom throw up quietly don't tell anybody
00:10:12.840 and you rally and do your job your job for the next four years is to be a kick-ass university
00:10:20.500 student. Your job is to get smarter, to get more aware, to understand that this picture is going
00:10:27.260 to get more and more expansive every single year you step into it, to understand that you absolutely
00:10:32.820 know nothing, but your job is to know more than you did yesterday. That's it. That's what you need
00:10:38.720 to do. Next point. First year might suck. It sucked for me. Here's why it sucked for me. I didn't
00:10:46.320 listen to anything I just said. I played varsity volleyball. I barely went to class. I sucked at
00:10:51.560 all the things. I didn't understand why I wasn't doing well in chemistry and I was multiple guessing 0.93
00:10:55.780 my way through exams. Then I transferred. I took politics. I found my passion. I am telling you
00:11:02.800 the things I've learned. I'm not telling you the things I haven't gone through myself. And I know
00:11:09.140 a lot of you are sitting out there saying, I don't believe her. She's full of it. Doesn't make any
00:11:14.040 okay tell me when you're three or four years in you'll have the exact same exact same things
00:11:20.540 so you jump all in now once you pick your classes stick if you suck at one oh well work hard stick
00:11:33.560 stick with those classes and understand i'm going to give you some academic advice i'm going to give
00:11:38.900 you some social advice i'm going to come back to academic advice first piece of academic advice
00:11:43.580 there's going to be a boatload of reading university isn't more difficult it is just more
00:11:49.180 understand how to manage it so if you're going into the social sciences which unfortunately guys
00:11:56.820 if you're math and science channel einstein i don't have as many um ideas for you but i think
00:12:06.180 some of them will still work you're going into social sciences boatload to read all right you're
00:12:11.460 going to be able to read it all i'm telling you right off the hop you're not that's okay but you
00:12:16.820 better damn read some and even better let's say you have five articles to read by the next tutorial
00:12:25.380 date look read two thoroughly make notes great questions in the margins on pieces of paper read 0.98
00:12:35.220 the other abstracts read portions of it pull some stuff out and when you sit down for tutorial which
00:12:40.820 which in the social sciences in your first year is the most important thing.
00:12:44.400 When you sit down, make sure your hand's up in the air first
00:12:47.180 so you're asking the question you want to ask,
00:12:49.700 so you're giving your opinion on something,
00:12:51.440 so you're involved in the class.
00:12:53.360 It's usually a good chunk of your mark is that tutorial.
00:12:56.980 So if you don't put your hand up right away,
00:12:59.540 if you don't get it out right away,
00:13:01.080 some other kid is going to take the information that you wanted to say,
00:13:05.040 and now it sounds redundant.
00:13:07.400 Put your hand up right away.
00:13:08.440 if before university you're shy you don't want to talk in front of class you're gonna need to get
00:13:14.000 over it a hundred percent you're gonna need to get over it because the number one transferable
00:13:19.760 skill the number one skill that everybody should be taught which is why i tell you to take drama
00:13:24.420 in high school is to stand uncomfortably in front of a room and talk number one skill
00:13:30.760 so in that tutorial get to know your ta now i'm not talking about sucking up i am talking about
00:13:38.700 networking people say networking and sucking up are are the same thing well maybe but that's the
00:13:44.700 way life works getting to know people getting to know their interests getting to know how to connect
00:13:49.760 getting them to remember you you want to talk about easy significant transferable skills it is
00:13:56.200 them right there. So if you're going to be the kid that sneaks in the back and barely says
00:14:00.840 anything and sneaks out, stop it. You're wasting your time at university. Stop being lazy. Stop
00:14:06.160 being afraid. Buck up. So you're going to go to class every day, every class. You're going to hand
00:14:14.520 things in ahead of time. I'm also going to tell you to do that because once you become friends
00:14:19.600 with your tutorial advisors, your tutorial professor, you're going to understand that
00:14:24.140 can submit things you can ask questions finish the stuff early get feedback before the due date
00:14:31.740 if you do that your mark will go up your understanding will just skyrocket on the same
00:14:39.020 note you're going to have different professors go talk to them too find out what they're interested
00:14:45.660 in what their focus their academic focus what they're researching lately all of those things
00:14:52.060 and then figure out a question and go ask them go sit down go shake their hand and look them
00:14:57.340 in the eye because you want to know what people aren't doing in the post age of covid that
00:15:03.260 meeting people in real time going up to professors making those connections
00:15:11.420 because i'll tell you when it comes time for your mark to be a 79 or an 80 that'll be the difference
00:15:17.580 or when it comes time for a graduate job or when it comes down time for a recommendation
00:15:22.540 for grad school you're their person all of a sudden of course you are because you put in
00:15:28.460 the work and again if you think it's sucking up i don't know what to do with you just
00:15:33.740 call it all a day because that's what life looks like making connections finding out who you like
00:15:39.500 finding out where your interests overlap there'll be professors that you don't get along with that
00:15:44.460 that you don't understand, that you don't like,
00:15:46.280 that you can't wait to get out of their class, cool.
00:15:49.080 But guess what, we all have to deal with them.
00:15:50.760 So figure out how to deal with it
00:15:52.140 and figure out how to succeed in that class anyway.
00:15:55.860 And then talk to more and another one and another one
00:15:58.500 and another one until you find somebody
00:16:00.300 with consistent interests and drives
00:16:03.560 that you're passionate about too.
00:16:05.460 Because then all of a sudden school
00:16:06.940 isn't just about your grade.
00:16:09.380 It's about the work that gets to be done,
00:16:11.180 the conversations that get to be had.
00:16:14.240 Now, first year might be our underwhelming in the social sciences.
00:16:17.000 It was for me.
00:16:17.640 I thought I was going to go sit in these classrooms and have these huge, big, amazing, philosophical conversations.
00:16:24.740 You know what happened?
00:16:26.220 Nothing.
00:16:27.580 First year students are quiet.
00:16:29.340 Heaven help me.
00:16:30.040 And even worse than quiet first year student is the first year student that repeats everything that the professor or the TA says, but in slightly different words.
00:16:37.740 Oh, don't be that guy.
00:16:41.280 Don't, don't, please don't be that guy.
00:16:43.880 Have an original thought.
00:16:45.760 If you find yourself that you're going to repeat something, stop yourself. 1.00
00:16:49.520 Shut up. 0.92
00:16:50.620 Nobody wants to hear it and they're not impressed with it. 0.99
00:16:54.260 And you're going to hear a lot of those students throw around really big words.
00:16:58.640 Cool, you got to learn the vocabulary.
00:17:01.180 Vocabulary matters.
00:17:02.340 Discourse matters.
00:17:03.440 Words matter.
00:17:05.620 But they're going to throw it around and a lot of them won't use it right.
00:17:08.580 So learn it.
00:17:10.540 Learn the proper vocabulary.
00:17:12.140 learn how to apply the discourse so that you can use it right. Don't be the jackass that corrects 0.99
00:17:18.860 somebody. Just ignore their point. Ignore their mistake. Make a better one. Make a better point. 0.99
00:17:25.700 Use the terminology correctly. Don't be the jackass that points the fingers that that's not 0.99
00:17:30.320 the right word. That's not the right. No, no, no, no, no. Don't be that guy. But be the person who 0.99
00:17:35.080 has something to say of value and then say it properly and apply it correctly. If you're wrong,
00:17:42.140 there's another thing i don't care be big go all in be big wrong that's okay and if your professor
00:17:51.980 says well that's not actually it you can say okay cool can you explain to me why i i'm not getting
00:17:59.180 it i want to learn about it you pretend to know everything when you don't there's no point of you
00:18:05.980 being at school at all you're wasting your time and i'm saying this not to make you go i'm saying
00:18:13.340 this to make you go and make it count because if you don't know what they're talking about and you
00:18:18.860 don't ask and you just try to memorize stop it just burn your money throw out the sweatshirt
00:18:25.420 you're not doing anybody any justice now that was all academic it's a lot of pressure i know 0.99
00:18:33.800 It's a lot of scary crap. 0.96
00:18:35.360 Well, you know what? 0.98
00:18:35.800 If we don't do things that scare us, what the hell are we living for?
00:18:38.320 This is another thing that's going to scare you, but you absolutely have to do.
00:18:41.520 Join something.
00:18:42.740 Not academic.
00:18:44.600 You like acting?
00:18:45.600 Join theater.
00:18:46.620 Try out for something.
00:18:47.960 You don't make it?
00:18:48.960 Cool.
00:18:49.400 Be a stagehand.
00:18:50.360 You can't do that?
00:18:51.180 Cool.
00:18:51.520 Build something for the stage.
00:18:53.400 Involve yourself somehow in the things you are passionate about outside the classroom.
00:18:58.840 You want to play volleyball?
00:18:59.760 Go play varsity.
00:19:00.500 Can't play varsity?
00:19:01.520 Go play intramurals.
00:19:03.660 you you want to write poetry go cool go sit with the poetry kids even though you're taking
00:19:08.700 engineering keep your the scope of your soul big widen it don't narrow it don't only become
00:19:20.540 the person that is in this course in this particular realm and never the twain shall meet
00:19:26.860 i will never go read a poem because i'm in engineering i will never go talk about mathematics
00:19:32.140 because i'm in philosophy also while i say philosophy if you can if you find space for
00:19:41.020 everybody take a philosophy course if i go back to school i would just take philosophy why because
00:19:46.380 it talks about how we think how we fashion arguments there is there is a essential
00:19:55.340 quality to philosophy where i feel like every everybody should take that course because it
00:20:01.100 lays the foundation for how we do everything politics law economics all of them have philosophical
00:20:09.580 base and if you're not going to take time to learn them and understand that base you're really never
00:20:15.180 going to understand them because you're never going to understand the foundations right you're
00:20:19.100 never going to understand the motivation you're never going to understand from where they've come
00:20:23.980 from and how they've been built and if you're looking to fix them you can't understand how to
00:20:29.100 fix them if you don't know any of that process join something if i would suggest you join
00:20:36.300 something that is let's say more cultural and something physical and i say physical because
00:20:44.300 i'm not just talking about volleyball and football and rugby or whatever i'm saying
00:20:50.620 tap into something physical if you like to walk there's walking clubs bikes go biking every day
00:20:56.780 If you want to lift weights, go lift weights.
00:20:58.800 If you want to join the, I don't know, the ultimate Frisbee team, I could care less.
00:21:05.920 But if you don't do something that's physical, you're going to find yourself very quickly
00:21:11.740 sort of relegating and shutting off parts of your body and your mind that you should
00:21:17.620 be engaging, right?
00:21:20.760 School should be about tapping into as many parts of your head as you possibly can.
00:21:26.780 And you only can do that by choice.
00:21:30.280 And nobody's standing over your shoulder, guys.
00:21:33.900 You know, if you're not living at home, nobody's tapping on your shoulder saying, off to school.
00:21:38.360 Nobody's waking you up.
00:21:39.740 Nobody's double checking your alarm, packing a lunch.
00:21:42.300 Nobody's doing any of that.
00:21:44.860 You're on your own.
00:21:47.820 Now, the university wants you to pass their classes, but they don't really care how you pass it because they still want the money that you're going to grant them.
00:21:53.560 those are all the way universities work and how you can feel a part of that school
00:22:02.600 because it's like well it is it's its own community it's its own entity like this biosphere
00:22:10.940 figure out how to be a part of it because the more that you're a part of it the more that you
00:22:16.800 put in the more that you get out the more that you get out the more that you can spread yourself
00:22:21.560 into that community and really take every single thing that it has to offer everything
00:22:30.220 right you shouldn't want to sleep in sleep in what a waste and i know you guys especially 0.98
00:22:41.940 the 17 year olds are sitting at home going oh my god this woman is ridiculous i just want to get 0.98
00:22:46.900 through school and get a job trust me here's what i promise look to your parent right now and say 0.90
00:22:51.320 how great is a job but how much did you love being at school and if you didn't love it being
00:22:58.120 at school you weren't taking the right courses you weren't taking it for the right reasons and
00:23:02.520 you weren't putting enough in now there are financial limitations all sorts of different
00:23:09.400 ways to get different sums of money to go to school i understand that's all incredibly stressful
00:23:15.720 but i also need you guys to understand this school high school and university and the
00:23:21.800 rest of your life will be filled with levels of anxiety being overwhelmed overworked undervalued
00:23:30.520 now's the time you need to figure out how to manage that so we're going to talk about mental
00:23:35.400 health stuff all universities have amazing programs that you can access figure out how
00:23:41.480 you can access them now i'm not saying to you you just lie down and let it overtake you no no no
00:23:49.640 now's the time you figure out you how do you deal with anxiety how do you deal with this kind of
00:23:57.240 level of increasing stress because university kind of goes nothing's happening nothing's happening
00:24:01.880 oh my god i have five tests tomorrow that's how university works and to be honest it's kind of how
00:24:06.280 life is. Again, ask your parent. Ask anybody sitting beside you that has a house. It's like,
00:24:11.700 you know, everything's fine, fine, fine. All of a sudden you need a new roof. There was a leak in
00:24:15.620 the basement. Something happened to the car and your kid, you know, needs braces. All at the same
00:24:21.240 time. That's how it works. So figure out how to shoulder that in a healthy way. And if you're
00:24:28.260 feeling like you can't shoulder it in a healthy way, figure out very quickly how to reach out
00:24:32.480 and who to reach out to because that's on you as well but universities have become
00:24:37.720 these centers of all that is amazing you just need to step into it it is on you now
00:24:46.960 not your parents not your teachers nobody else cares
00:24:50.480 now as you progress it'll get better because you'll take courses you'll figure out what really
00:24:57.520 drives you you'll figure out what you love and you'll take more and more and more of those courses
00:25:02.340 But I want to challenge you, please, to always keep a hold of and always keep touch of what inspires you externally to that.
00:25:16.960 You play the guitar? Cool. Don't ever stop.
00:25:20.280 You want to act? Cool. Don't ever limit yourself because you're also taking engineering.
00:25:26.400 Make sure you tap into all of those things because that's, I honestly believe that's what feeds the soul.
00:25:33.600 That's what gives us energy.
00:25:36.220 That's what allows us to think bigger than we were thinking yesterday.
00:25:42.420 And then you can buy another sweatshirt.
00:25:44.260 Because around this time, you're going to need, you're going to need a little push.
00:25:47.400 Sometimes it can be so overwhelming.
00:25:50.180 And then you're going to need to know how to take a break.
00:25:54.460 That's a hard one.
00:25:56.400 It's a hard one to understand what the time is to push and what the time is to sit down and watch three, you know, seasons of Grey's Anatomy because you need that.
00:26:10.940 Because there will be that time.
00:26:13.680 And the only person that's going to know how to push, push, push, push, and then pull back is going to be you.
00:26:20.740 That's it.
00:26:21.460 and as you progress you will notice the marks come easier the less you care about the finality
00:26:31.520 of it and the more you focus on the substantive meat and potatoes of the course and of the material
00:26:39.020 you'll see it's like oh my god i got a 90 without even paying attention how did that happen
00:26:43.740 well it happened because you're focused on the right thing
00:26:47.480 it happened because you were all in it happened because the discussion and the debate and the
00:26:56.300 conversation the back and forth was obviously more important than what i was going to get on
00:27:01.340 the test later and then those things just come and as far as jobs go you'll start figuring that
00:27:10.120 out that's okay no education is bad education the only time it's wasteful the only time is when you
00:27:21.660 don't put enough into it is when you've decided not to give it a hundred percent when you've
00:27:28.380 decided that the mark is the only thing that matters that's when it's a waste that's when
00:27:32.620 you should pack it on up go get a part-time job and see how the other half live because you're
00:27:36.920 getting out of it what you should be getting out of it but don't you dare listen to some of these
00:27:45.880 podcast potatoes talking about it's not worth it what a waste of time i have millions of dollars
00:27:53.720 look at me listen education is never a waste of time ever and i know i'm talking very much
00:28:03.720 in the realm of academics right university for the most part but if you're driven by like you
00:28:10.280 want to learn how to fix cars you want to learn how to cook you want to learn how to do hair and
00:28:16.040 makeup and all the guys don't think for a second that's not education don't think for a second
00:28:21.240 that doesn't have incredible value however at every moment make sure you're keeping a more open
00:28:29.560 mindset for example if i wanted to be a mechanic that's amazing god i wish i knew how to fix my
00:28:36.680 car but don't stop taking business courses do you want to be somebody's mechanic or do you want to
00:28:43.400 own your own shop because if you want to own your own shop it requires more work you got to be a
00:28:48.760 mechanic and then you got to figure out how the business end works same goes for all of those
00:28:53.400 trades you can work for somebody or you can figure out maybe not work for you but at least understand
00:29:00.360 the business component don't ever drop that because you say oh it's too much or i can't
00:29:05.960 handle that or i never really liked math i could give a crap i don't care if you like math
00:29:13.480 you need to learn a functional and you need to have a grasp on a functional sense of math
00:29:19.880 accounting business math and how it applies to what you might want to do absolutely
00:29:27.080 you don't want to be an actor because maybe it's not you but you love hollywood cool be an agent
00:29:31.960 figure it out start writing scripts figure it out you're a musician start writing scores for
00:29:38.120 movies figure it out talk to people sit down with people listen to what they have to say
00:29:45.080 what they've been through what they've achieved university should be every single day your brain
00:29:52.440 and your ideas and your mentality expanding it never should narrow if it narrows you're not
00:29:59.640 doing it right and after the four years you really should be come out come out saying things like
00:30:07.000 wow i realized i absolutely know nothing at all i thought i knew but the more that i know
00:30:16.120 the more that you learn the more that you will realize you know nothing and that's
00:30:21.240 it sounds negative but it's a very cool thing it's this idea that i learn this little piece
00:30:27.240 and then i can learn the entire iceberg you you expand all of that taking those first steps are
00:30:35.160 essential, but it's a never-ending process. So that's my piece of advice. Those are all of my
00:30:45.460 pieces traipsing off to first-year university. Your friends will come. Want to know why? Because
00:30:52.800 you've just inserted yourself in all the places you're passionate about. The social life will come.
00:30:57.640 the marks will come everything you want will come because you've done everything you possibly can do
00:31:07.240 to set yourself up for a passionate successful university college ride and then that sweatshirt
00:31:16.460 come 30 years later will mean so much to you because you'll realize that was the moment
00:31:24.340 I took a hold of everything I've ever wanted to do. That was the moment where my eyes were open.
00:31:31.220 That was the moment I realized that the more conversations I have, the more debates I have,
00:31:37.540 the more amazing diversity of ideas that get led into my brain, the smarter I become and the better
00:31:43.480 the world becomes around me. All right, guys, that's it for today. That's it. Thus endeth
00:31:51.200 the lesson. It's an important one. I hope you listen. I hope you apply it. And to be honest,
00:31:58.180 come maybe next December, throw some comments on here and tell me what you think. Actually,
00:32:03.440 right now, throw some comments on here anyways. And if you've already been through it, tell me
00:32:08.380 if I make sense. And otherwise, if you haven't been through and you have no comments, listen,
00:32:13.240 guys, just do what I say, because as I tell my students, I'm rarely, if ever, wrong. Thank you
00:32:21.320 guys so much for hanging out with me. I will see you next week. Same bat time, same bat station.
00:32:28.000 Dismissed. 1.00
