00:00:56.840So for people who aren't familiar with who either of us are, can you explain your lifelong interest in ancient Roman history, like how you got interested in it?
00:01:07.220I think I started studying Roman history in my early 20s. That was a long time ago. I'm not going to give the exact age that I am now. But I think I started studying Roman history because there was so much information available to me.
00:01:21.660In other civilizations, they wrote in texts that really couldn't be deciphered.
00:01:27.600You know, in ancient Egypt, they just had pictures.
00:01:30.380Well, how do you determine what that means?
00:03:41.820Absolutely. And I think I was interested in them before Spartacus came out.
00:03:45.600But after Spartacus came out, that just heightened my interest in it.
00:03:48.760I couldn't tell you how many books I have detailing so many different things about them, even some of the female gladiators, which that's a whole other subject, too.
00:03:57.280but um when i saw the first uh advertisement for this new show spartacus blood and sand coming out
00:04:05.840i i will never forget i ran downstairs and i told my brother who also likes to study history
00:04:11.740i was like dude this show is coming on i've got to see this and i was there because they were
00:04:19.920releasing it a week after week of an episode they didn't give it to us where we could just binge it
00:04:25.500I watched it week after week. Then I binged it God only knows how many times after all of the episodes were out. It was just I was captivated by this show to the point to where I was able to recite some of the lines in the show.
00:04:41.740this show is just it's an amazing depiction of ancient rome and and how the society worked and
00:04:50.840how gladiators worked and even the way the show is is it's still quite it's not quite as gritty
00:05:00.760is what it actually would have been like back then and so when you watch it and then you think
00:05:05.960hmm what was it really like back then it was probably way worse than what we're seeing right
00:05:11.220now it just if you let your mind go there you just you just start imagining so many things and
00:05:17.400that's what I love about this show is it just opens your mind to so many different things
00:05:21.640so I think it would be good to begin our discussion the episode there's several different cities and
00:05:27.500cultures they come up well actually no I should say we're going to be talking about season one
00:05:32.080episode one the red serpent directed by Rick Jacobson written by Stephen S. DeKnight who as
00:05:39.120the show goes on these two guys clearly they were involved in the creation of the show because
00:05:42.260they're directing and writing a lot of the episodes but can you explain because again
00:05:47.220again listeners like i'm here for the ride i've only watched episode one i i want to watch them
00:05:52.400just before we record so it's like fresh in my mind so i don't know what's happening next but
00:05:55.560there's an awful lot of places and cultures i didn't know about so can you kind of set the
00:06:00.580scene for who like thrace like what are we talking about here so the main character spartacus is from
00:06:06.580the, I guess you call it a province, of Thrace. They are considered to be Thracians, the people
00:06:14.360that live there. Thrace was a region that existed in ancient times that's part of the current day
00:06:21.620Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. It spanned quite a distance. It was basically just kind of a
00:06:28.640a gathering of of warrior tribes that made up the the people of thrace and they pretty much
00:06:38.040kind of tried to keep to themselves from everything that i've i've seen um but they
00:06:42.940were attacked because you know that's what they did back in the day everyone was always attacking
00:06:46.860everyone they were attacked by by different groups coming from different areas but it was
00:06:53.700mostly because they were um the really vital um section of of a crossroad between trade of europe
00:07:01.780and asia and we all know that if you had a larger civilization a larger city you're going to try to
00:07:09.500take over the smaller one so you could get a hold of whatever it was that they had that you wanted
00:07:15.100you know and if you had a good trade route that that opened you up to invasion left right and
00:07:21.000sideways. They were just, they were going to come at you every chance they had. This area of Thrace
00:07:26.160was originally colonized by Greece, but then they were later conquered by Persians and then the
00:07:32.200Macedonians under Philip II and Alexander the Great. And then I don't know, I don't know if
00:07:39.040they just kind of just started releasing their hold on Thrace, but eventually the Romans took
00:07:44.160them over and created them to be a province of the actual Roman Empire. And so at the beginning
00:07:50.520of this episode we're gonna go like scene by scene through the episode but just for my sake
00:07:53.860at the beginning of this episode it seems like they're sort of reluctant allies thrace and rome
00:07:58.320at least when the episode starts right yeah like let's team up to to fight this common enemy but
00:08:03.680there's like bad blood between them obviously the two countries we've talked about this and
00:08:09.040other times that we've had discussions rome really was kind of like the the one group that
00:08:15.940everybody disliked so if rome is coming to you and saying oh let's team up word has gotten to
00:08:22.940you at some point where don't trust those people over there because they're gonna stab you in the
00:08:28.780back so everyone knew how rome was and so obviously they would be smart to be reluctant
00:08:35.100to want to actually work with rome because they know you know what their mo was yeah they're gonna
00:08:43.220to come in, they're going to say, oh, we'll help you get rid of this common enemy. But really what
00:08:48.520it is, is we're going to have you sign up to work with us. Basically, we're going to have you tied
00:08:54.900to us for the rest of your life because you agreed to work with us this one time. And then we're
00:08:59.880going to say, we're going to help you, but we're really going to be standing in the background and
00:09:03.580watch you fight these people. We'll only come in if we really feel like it. And, but we're going
00:09:09.720to help you get rid of this this common enemy and and life will be so much better for you
00:09:13.880and then it just doesn't end up being that way because you end up defeating who they came to
00:09:19.940technically help you defeat and then they're like oh yeah but you already pledged yourself to us so
00:09:24.280yeah this is how it's going to be now they they they over promise and under deliver pretty much
00:09:31.380every time they go and offer their quote-unquote assistance to help with something and so obviously0.92
00:09:37.260the Thracians are going to kind of be like, yeah, we know how you work because, you know,0.99
00:09:41.480really where's the benefit in this for us? And it ends up to where they overpromise,1.00
00:09:47.860underdeliver, just like they always do. And that just kind of sets everything else off.
00:09:52.920So we're definitely going to explain that even more when we get into the recap. But I think the
00:09:57.580next region you're going to explain is Gaul, which I want to say France, sort of, right?
00:10:03.400so according to everything that i've studied it is part of because gaul was actually a really
00:10:09.960large area as well it was part of modern day areas in france belgium luxembourg and parts
00:10:17.820of switzerland netherlands and germany however most of the time when i'm studying gaul they
00:10:24.940mostly lean towards the germany part of it so i'm assuming that they probably occupied more of that
00:10:32.780territory than they did everything else but they did kind of span into other things so it would
00:10:37.740have been uh more more of a france area more of a german area that they sort of occupied the most
00:10:44.740parts of they they started out as a collection of celtic tribes and they were sort of known
00:10:55.980for being really good warriors and you'll see that when we get further into the series you'll see
00:11:04.180why they were known to be that but the Gauls you know even though they were really good fighters
00:11:12.480they ended up like everybody else they ended up being sort of outnumbered by Rome. Rome just had
00:11:17.880the numbers when it came to their military and it a lot of times just didn't matter how good of a
00:11:23.800fighter you were, if you aren't numbered, you're not going to win. And that's unfortunately what
00:11:28.100happened to the Gaul people is the France section of it, they were conquered. And then everything
00:11:34.700else just kind of started turning into part of the Roman empire. And then once the Roman empire
00:11:41.780started losing their grip on everything, then the Franks took over and most of it just became
00:11:48.960France as we know it today. And so there's also a city that's mentioned several times in this0.88
00:11:54.620episode. I thought it was a made up city, but it was a real place. It's called Capua. And what I
00:12:00.820first thought was, oh, that's where Romeo and Juliet took place. No, I was misremembering.
00:12:05.660Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona. And Juliet's last name is Capulet. And so I'm just
00:12:09.960completely off base. But Capua was a city. It was an important city in the Roman Empire
00:12:41.660you'll hear them talking about going between Rome and Capua.
00:12:44.360And so you think back in ancient times, it's not like they just hopped on a plane and went where they wanted to go.
00:12:49.860They either were walking, they were horseback or they were in a carriage.
00:12:54.280And so it's like you're thinking it must have taken them forever to get from Capua to Rome.
00:13:00.600And back then, it would have taken them quite a bit of time to travel 105 miles.
00:13:05.620Now, today, I would hop in my car and drive 100 miles and not think anything of it.
00:13:09.940That wasn't the case back then, but it was still easy enough.
00:13:13.280they still had a route mapped out well enough to where they could travel between the two cities
00:13:17.800fairly easily. The only thing you had to worry about was bandits on the road. So obviously anyone
00:13:22.500traveling between the two cities would have been, they would have had their protection. They would
00:13:26.420have had either some soldiers with them or just some personal paid protection that they had
00:13:31.160traveling these roads because everything was dangerous back then. But the thing about Capua
00:13:36.860that made it so great is it had pretty much everything else that Rome had, you know, like
00:13:43.040with the amphitheater and all that sort of thing but they had i don't know if you want to say ludi
00:13:48.580or ludus ludus doesn't sound right but a ludus is a gladiator school where they train gladiators
00:13:55.960on the the to perfect the arts of whatever version of a gladiator they're going to be there's many
00:14:02.280different types of of gladiators and we can get into that later um but the school is where they
00:14:06.860learned how to how to to perfect those skills and um they they had an amphitheater where most of
00:14:15.380those fights would take place and i in my studies realized they had an amphitheater large enough to
00:14:21.340hold 60 000 people right so this is when you're talking about like arena concert tours like that's
00:14:27.760where my mind went to like how many tickets are going to these major shows it's like that size
00:14:32.920Like when you see a concert of like Beyonce or like BTS or whatever, it's like that amount of people.
00:14:38.700And so think that if it held that many people that came to watch this spectacle, how many people actually lived in that city or in the closely surrounding cities of Capua?
00:14:49.640I can't imagine seeing something that size in that day and time.
00:14:53.840Now we see the big NFL stadiums, whatever.
00:14:57.260We're used to seeing something like that.
00:14:58.660But this particular building being that size, that would have just the spectacle of it would have been enough to draw people in to watch the gladiator fights, because you want to be able to go back and say, I was there.
00:15:12.520The only difference between us and them is we have phones to record it to prove that we were there.
00:15:17.500They were carving it in stone tablets.
00:15:23.300So yeah, Capua was a bigger city than what people might think, or people that know that the city actually existed. It had everything pretty much that Rome had. It had the baths, it had all that stuff. It was a bustling city. And really what made it stand apart was they had the ludus there, and they had the top of the top when it came to the gladiators. So that was their bragging point right there.
00:15:49.440and then just on this document where you're like things that you want to explain you have um you've
00:15:55.660mentioned i should let listeners know i'm terrible with names so all like the names of all the
00:16:01.240characters in the show i don't know but you have mentioned legatus it's a legatus legatus is this
00:16:07.420a character on the show who we've seen okay so no legatus is actually a title oh it's a title okay
00:16:13.640it's the title of a high-ranking military officer in the roman military um and a legatus would be
00:16:19.320in charge of a legion. And if you don't know how many people are in a legion, there is between
00:16:24.6404,000 and 6,000 men in a legion. So this one person would be in charge of this legion of men.
00:16:30.620And that would be your infantry. It would be your other military men that had titles that
00:16:37.820weren't quite as high as yours. So you would have your generals and your lieutenants, all that stuff.
00:16:42.500They had specific names for them, but you don't hear those names in the show. So I only brought
00:16:48.240out Legatist because that is the title of one of the main characters the main character that
00:16:54.100butts head with the other main character we'll get into all that later but you're definitely
00:16:57.960going to hear the the word Legatist a lot in this show and I'm just going to officially make this0.98
00:17:03.120podcast be in the explicit category because you also hear the word cunt a lot in this show0.95
00:17:08.580I don't know if that's because it was shot in New Zealand but like I was like whoa0.83
00:17:13.720yes that is a favorite word of theirs it's um it comes out quite a bit
00:17:18.760yeah and i think that's interesting too the show um it's it's shot in new zealand there's a lot of
00:17:25.160new zealand and australian actors in it and i appreciate that a lot of them are just using
00:17:28.700their own accents they're not they didn't make everybody talk with a fake british accent which
00:17:32.220so often in historical things it's like let's all make everyone sound like bbc like patrick stewart
00:17:39.000like so anyway so i was like oh and then we'll talk as we go through because i was recognizing
00:17:43.520people from other projects that i knew and that is another thing that i noticed right away about
00:17:48.560it too about the the accents they have some very distinct ones between the different characters
00:17:55.400and you know even the the people that speak with a british accent there's still somewhat of a
00:18:01.360difference in how some of them pronounce their words um it's always funny to me when you see
00:18:06.160behind the scenes recordings of these people when they start speaking in their actual accents
00:18:11.620compared to what they're using on the show and some of them it doesn't change at all um so it's
00:18:17.700just it's really interesting and and again i appreciate it that they allowed some of these
00:18:22.280people because they they weren't all from the same region so they wouldn't all sound alike and i
00:18:28.260really appreciated that like you said they didn't make everyone sound like they were patrick stewart
00:18:32.180they allowed them to have different accents now whether that's the way they sounded back then or
00:18:36.180not we'll never know we'll never know they also weren't speaking english so like it's a tv show
00:18:40.500Oh, and speaking of that, you have to keep in mind they speak in a very odd way, the way they put their words together.
00:18:48.660Because if you read how Latin is written, it's almost like it's backwards to forwards on how they structure their sentences.
00:18:58.780And so you might say a sentence that comprised of five words.
00:19:03.500for them to say the same exact sentence they could end up saying seven eight different words
00:19:08.500because they just they just spoke in a different way so if you watch the episode you will hear them
00:19:14.120saying their their sentences in more detailed ways than they probably need to um but that's
00:19:20.580kind of just how latin was written so obviously the writers of the show kind of took liberties on
00:19:26.220on how they wanted to have these people speaking but the way they form their sentences is interesting
00:19:31.400You definitely have to watch the episode to understand what I'm talking about.
00:19:35.460So if we're going to dive into the episode, it begins with a scene of the character who becomes known as Spartacus.
00:19:41.880But I want to shout out the actor, Andy Whitfield, who sadly, I think this is widely known, he passed away.
00:19:49.540Like he only he filmed the first season of this show and then he was in cancer treatment and then he ended up passing away and they recast the role for seasons two and three.
00:19:57.940but he is so good in this like from moment one i was just like oh look at this guy like first of
00:20:06.400all he's like extremely good looking and very photogenic like an interesting face interesting
00:20:11.120features um physique like come on but beautiful deep voice but he's he's such a good presence on
00:20:18.480this show we were saying before we recorded i just felt like he makes this show work like there's so
00:20:23.240many good things about it but like if you hadn't had him i don't know if it would have gotten a
00:20:27.300season two like i think he's so good i agree i think that he was perfectly cast for this i i
00:20:33.840honestly i i didn't mind the recasting of it but initially for this show i there could not have
00:20:41.660been anybody else to play this part he's he's so good and we get to see him do a lot of different
00:20:47.480things like he goes with the gamut his character in this episode he's happy he's sad he's horny
00:20:52.460he's like you see all these different things he's so good and the episode starts in that classic
00:20:57.560thing where like at first you see him and it the episode mostly is like well how did he get in this
00:21:02.560situation sort of flashback and that's really the look he has on his face while he's sitting there
00:21:07.760alone just kind of looking around like what the hell happened how did like and a lot happens
00:21:17.120listeners um actually i want to say so like we're going to talk about the episode in detail so if
00:21:21.520you haven't watched it like you know enjoy i listened to some recap podcasts about things i
00:21:25.460haven't seen but if you want to watch the show it's available on the stars streaming app um you
00:21:29.740can also buy it on apple tv so if you want to follow along you can do that but we're going to
00:21:34.360talk about every single detail of this episode so like spoilers um but so the first scene is like
00:21:40.580he's in the like underneath like we first see he's sort of underneath the arena and like there's a
00:21:48.480gladiator fight happening up upstairs and you've got some good details here gina about sort of
00:21:53.700what this establishes like the the gladiator fight that is happening while he's like chained
00:21:59.360in the basement right so he's basically chained into the the holding room it's about what where
00:22:06.340they would have put the person that was up next to fight so they could hear the crowd they could
00:22:12.080hear the swords clanking they could you know just their anxiety could get ratcheted up god only
00:22:18.920knows how many notches by hearing everything that's going on i can't imagine how how quickly0.79
00:22:22.740their hearts were beating hearing this thinking damn that's going to be me next out there fighting0.66
00:22:27.340for my life literally and so he's sitting there just kind of just just remembering what his life0.93
00:22:35.420used to be compared to him sitting there now getting ready to fight for his life and so it
00:22:42.100starts out with with them showing a man out there on the sands fighting a gladiator he's fighting in
00:22:48.060the style of mermilo and this particular gladiator he would have a legionary shield so it's a longer
00:22:54.460shield i don't know if you've ever watched anything that takes place in ancient rome when
00:22:57.800they show the military they've got these shields that they can basically hold up right underneath
00:23:02.320their eyes that covers the most vital parts of their body so if someone is is coming at them with
00:23:10.020a sword that shield is going to protect them once you get below that like around your thigh area
00:23:15.460they catch you in your knee it's over they're going to cripple you you're done so he this
00:23:21.080particular um fighting style carried a legionary shield and a shorter sword so it would make it
00:23:27.600easier for them to fight quickly because the the shield would be heavy enough you don't need a
00:23:32.320heavy sword and shield um and that was called a gladius and you could wield that with with pretty
00:23:38.280good force and fairly easily can i say something about this too like as a person who doesn't know
00:23:43.400about this but watching the episode like it was pretty clear like there's a gladiator and he's
00:23:47.160got the shield the sword a helmet all this stuff and he's fighting a guy who's wearing just kind
00:23:51.100like like a loincloth like a loincloth so like you can tell like this is it's not gladiator
00:23:58.240versus gladiator it's like gladiator like the crowd is there to watch this gladiator kill this
00:24:02.760person yeah basically yeah and he's dressed like the way that we see spartacus so it's like okay
00:24:07.260spartacus is not at this point the trained gladiator he's just like the human sacrifice he's
00:24:12.200like yeah and so um i i wanted to to make note that um typically gladiators were slaves um or
00:24:24.980someone that had been captured in in battle somewhere rome went invaded somewhere to capture
00:24:30.720all these people and if they appear to be a good enough fighter um uh alanista who is the owner of
00:24:38.480a ludus would buy them and start training them to be a gladiator. So that's generally how a0.82
00:24:46.240gladiator would come to be. But there were also times where free men would go and sign up to be
00:24:53.240a gladiator, and they would get paid to do this. And that would pay off in some sort of gambling
00:24:59.040debts or whatever they might have had some sort of debt in. And so they would willingly put
00:25:03.480themselves out there to fight so their debts could be taken care of. These were free men,
00:25:08.700but while they were at the Ludus, they were still pretty much treated the way the slaves were.
00:25:13.640If they were to die in battle, then their family would be given an X amount of money to sort of
00:25:20.300pay for the fact that he wasn't there to earn money for the family anymore. So those would be
00:25:25.080the two types of men that would be a gladiator. And then you had the different types of gladiators.
00:25:30.680So I just wanted to point that out because not everybody in the Ludus is going to be a slave. They could have willingly been there, which would have been a major decision to make, to get rid of your freedom, to get rid of your family, to go and probably die in the arena, like horribly die.
00:25:52.200that that would be that would be a heavy decision to make but some people made it so but in this
00:25:58.060scene um you've got this well-trained well-armored gladiator fighting this poor man in a loincloth
00:26:05.340just swinging like crazy just trying not to die and obviously that's not gonna go so good for
00:26:14.420this person we don't see exactly how it ends we see him get sliced up here and there but we don't
00:26:19.200see exactly how it ends because that's when Spartacus really kind of goes back into his
00:26:23.020mind and starts thinking about where did I come from how am I here exactly the question that
00:26:28.900existential but also actual question like how did I get here which is where we see so it's a flashback
00:26:35.620to um this kind of meeting so first of all first of all we see so Spartacus back in time and you
00:26:42.600can really see that Andy Whitfield is gorgeous um so it's him and the rest of the Thracians and
00:26:48.820And there's sort of it's like a PowerPoint presentation from this Roman guy who's like, here's why you should team up with us.0.98
00:26:54.920That's really how it comes across, too.
00:26:57.060He tries to give bullet points of why you should be fighting with us, why you need to join the Roman auxiliary, because this is this is what we're offering.
00:27:05.140And it's it's exactly like the vibes are so much like Andy Whitfield.
00:34:35.660we don't know what his original name is.
00:34:37.200We just know he's later named Spartacus by the Romans.
00:34:39.700But I'm just going to call him Spartacus
00:34:41.040because I'm sure that's what I said in the script.
00:34:43.360So Spartacus goes to say goodbye to his very hot wife.
00:34:47.100And they do a thing where he ties a piece of fabric
00:34:51.380around her thigh to be like remember me and they have this kind of like sexy scene together
00:34:57.700and she says I had a dream that you were kneeling before a red serpent and like if you go to war
00:35:04.300you're destined for great and unfortunate things he's like babe I gotta go I gotta do this I gave
00:35:11.060my word he says it several times like I gave my word to the Romans like I have to go yeah and
00:35:15.380And if you think about it, their word was their bond.
00:35:19.020A lot of civilizations have been like that in history, where if they give their word, they stick to their word.
00:35:25.780They couldn't break it because to them, that was like an ultimate sin kind of thing.
00:35:30.380So that is why you hear Spartacus say that a lot is I gave my word.
00:35:35.120And and unfortunately for a lot of people, giving your word and sticking to that was what got you killed.1.00
00:35:40.060so yeah he's just too upstanding and perfect of a person for this corrupt messed up roman0.66
00:35:47.740situation but so they go to there's a battle scene and so like the get i come in they're all0.99
00:35:55.540they're like basically on all fours they're like we're monster people um the thracians are just0.97
00:36:00.720like you know cutting off heads and legs and they're like where the fuck are the romans1.00
00:36:05.540the romans come at the last minute to be like oh hey oh you guys handled it okay great thanks bye0.99
00:36:09.780like and it's so sad that they did that numerous times you know that that they put whoever was
00:36:20.000they were quote-unquote fighting with they put them out to take the brunt of the hit of the
00:36:24.880initial war starting and then they would come up and sort of clean it up and then be like yes we0.98
00:36:31.160are victorious no you're a jerk that came later on and tried to claim victory this show is i would0.92
00:36:39.680say not a pro Rome show dish the Rome it's a Spartacus is our main character he's Thracian0.99
00:36:46.160and all we see the Romans do led by Glabbers what's his name Glabber it's like they obviously0.98
00:36:51.780are the worst and we see that they have these like luxury glamping tents where they're staying0.99
00:36:56.680versus the Thracians are outside and I want to just mention this it will come up but I don't1.00
00:37:02.380want to keep mentioning it the Thracians are wearing like not clothes they're wearing kind
00:37:07.880a loincloth and sort of like a harness but not a shirt not pants and it's snowing and they're1.00
00:37:14.560outside but none of them ever look cold and that's because they're such badasses i have to imagine
00:37:18.920yes their muscles are glistening and they're just they don't need tents they don't but the romans0.99
00:37:25.220are oh they're so cowardly and weak they need you know heating and air conditioning so so glabber0.89
00:37:31.820is like hanging out his glamping tent and then i love that you wrote in your notes gina like0.98
00:37:35.640unrealistically she comes to visit so it's his wife so it's this blonde woman and she shows up0.97
00:37:41.420in just like a fur coat nothing inside which there's a lot of boobs in this show but later0.96
00:37:48.280when we later see how far they are like they're in thrace doing this fight they have to go across1.00
00:37:53.100the adriatic sea it's like this bitch like she put on her fur coat with nothing inside and then1.00
00:37:58.260went on what like a multi-week ship trip just to like come up and like just to like have sex with1.00
00:38:04.360her husband and then leave again like this is yeah from rome to capua and she's just like i'm going0.99
00:38:10.960to bulgaria like fuck my husband okay like ma'am calm down and just like i said just everything0.99
00:38:21.860about that is completely unrealistic because number one a woman back then especially a woman0.99
00:38:27.280in high society would not be allowed out of the zilla yeah she just she would not be able to just0.90
00:38:33.000be like screw it i'm i'm gonna travel for days to rome she was a area she would not have been1.00
00:38:39.900because women for as much maybe freedom as they had they still they they had to report to their1.00
00:38:47.520fathers and their husbands you didn't do things without permission but in order to travel that1.00
00:38:52.960distance that would have taken a long ass time she would have had to have had plenty of guards
00:38:57.460with her there's no way she could have snuck out of capua to get to thrace there's none of that is
00:39:03.760realistic they made it seem like all she did was just a quick horseback ride from capua to where
00:39:09.140he was camped out in thrace and here i am let me throw up on my fur and you can ravish me that's
00:39:15.180just nothing about that was realistic but you know what you have to take it with a grain of salt
00:39:20.080because it's like the get-eye it's like you gotta get this story point across and the story point
00:39:25.040is that she is the daughter of a senator she is full of bad ideas but and her dad doesn't like0.97
00:39:31.280glabber obviously because he sucks but she's like she wants glabber to get her father's favor and0.97
00:39:36.540she's like here's what you should do babe like and it's all just bad ideas right constantly with her0.98
00:39:41.920i mean and you'll see it episode after episode she's always in his ear chirping telling him what
00:39:47.020he needs to do in order to gain more favor in order to get the glory that she feels he deserves
00:39:51.620and that he's arrogant enough to believe he deserves it's just you know white male arrogance
00:39:57.280i'm sorry he just he he's abundant with it and and he of course is going to listen to the person
00:40:03.280that's gassing him up telling him oh you can do this that and the other and it's his gorgeous
00:40:07.320wife yeah he's going to believe he can conquer the world and i mean if he can do that then
00:40:12.480her father has no choice but to back him and everything he ever wants to do because if you
00:40:16.920think about it he wouldn't be legatist without the senator the senator would have gotten him0.81
00:40:21.300that position but he would have only done it because his daughter played the i'm daddy's
00:40:26.180little girl card and got it for him and then glabber is not able to really back up being0.99
00:40:31.920a legatist because it to be in that position i mean you got to be running shit glabber ain't0.98
00:40:36.800running shit so yeah she's caught between the father and the husband the husband is kind of0.98
00:40:43.060on the outside because clearly the dad didn't like him from the get-go the dad had good instincts1.00
00:40:47.460he sucks so it's just like it's a just a completely dysfunctional bad situation
00:40:54.660that they just continue to make bad for themselves i want to also mention that she shows up and she0.99
00:41:01.260brings some wine from capua and i'm like wow babe like you you put on a fur coat with nothing inside0.99
00:41:06.700took a multi-week journey across the adriatic sea just to like have sex with your husband and you0.97
00:41:13.180also brought this little like i don't know what do you call it like a little it's a lamb a lamb0.54
00:41:17.480skin it's usually a lamb skin leather pouch that they would put the wine in so she's like i brought
00:41:21.580you the good wine babe like great thanks i just mentioned that because later on somebody steals
00:41:25.820the wine but you'll hear about so it's it's called cestian wine now i've never really dug too deep
00:41:31.260into what cestian wine is but i know that that's considered to be the highest level of wine that
00:41:35.580you could get back then it was not cheap so you had to have money in order to get it and so that's
00:41:41.740why that's probably why the the Thracian was willing to take it because he knew it was going0.95
00:41:46.660to be good wine because if it was in Glaber's tent it wasn't going to be the cheap shit that0.80
00:41:50.740they were drinking but also everybody drank wine back then because the water because water is0.65
00:41:55.600unsafe yes yeah so everyone drank wine um it's just a matter of the quality of the wine that
00:42:01.640you're drinking so I do want to clarify so the bad idea that she gives him is she's like you0.85
00:42:06.980don't need like you should go after Mithridates and the Greeks and leave the Gedi to the Thracians
00:42:12.120So he's like, okay, I'm going to like, I teamed up with the Thracians, but now I'm going to like, but she's like, babe, you shouldn't do that. And he's like, okay, so this is why he's like, I'm going to not do what makes sense here, which is why I think it's the next scene. Spartacus comes in and he's like, hey, I'm the hottest and most capable person in the world. And I think this is what we should do.0.70
00:42:32.040And then Glaber is like, actually, no, let's not do that. And Spartacus is like, but my idea is the correct one. And I am amazing and brilliant. And Glaber is like, except are you though? No. So this is like ever seeing. I'm like this. I was watching for the first time with my boyfriend and I was like, man, Spartacus, he's got everything. Like he gives good speeches. He's got the military instincts. He knows how to like do everything. Like this guy's got like, and he's gorgeous. Like he's got the strategies.
00:43:00.860like you can tell like where the story is going spoiler for history is that
00:43:05.920Spartacus is going to lead a rebellion of enslaved people against Rome.

00:56:06.340with the podcast version dropping the next day.
00:56:36.340From the creators of Parkdale Haunt comes Woodbine, a podcast about monsters, dreams, and changes, those you want, and those you never saw coming.
00:56:43.820Season two arrives September 24th, distributed by Realm.
00:56:52.000Much like Spartacus and his wife waking up, and it's time for a bunch of more shitty things to happen to this hot man and his hot wife.0.94
01:32:16.840And then the dad is like, okay, he can live.0.99
01:32:19.340And the crowd is just like, fuck yeah, we love this guy.0.99
01:32:21.920like oh my god he just cut off the guy's legs we love him and the crowd starts to chant0.99
01:32:26.120spartacus spartacus and then just glaber and spartacus are just like0.74
01:32:30.420they're just like mean mugging each other like if looks could kill they would both be dead0.99
01:32:37.300because spartacus is looking at like fuck you i won and i'm getting pardoned and glaber is like1.00
01:32:43.840you fucking bitch you were supposed to die you're still making me look bad they just they just the1.00
01:32:49.900hatred was deep from there on out yeah no they is and this is like as well this is the first1.00
01:32:56.500episode of our podcast and this is the first episode of the show but the show really establishes
01:33:00.620like so many things you're telling me are going to pay off later but it's really just like here's
01:33:04.140the stakes here's what's up here's the people here's this rivalry like it's it really sets
01:33:08.760everything up really well i think this isn't the most action of the series in this episode but this
01:33:14.400episode was so necessary to show you why so many things happen later on in the season and in the
01:33:21.140series if you didn't have some of this background on on some of these people and and some of the
01:33:26.900hatred and and some of the ass kissing if you didn't have that background you'd be kind of
01:33:32.340confused why things would be like oh why does he hate him so much yeah no you really it just0.79
01:33:36.340it was a really hard thing for them to do and they did it in like an hour long episode i think
01:33:40.640it was an hour um i'm just setting up so many people and so much history and so much background
01:33:45.340like it's so much to set up and they did like they got everything they did and now they're just they
01:33:50.440just from here on out they just hit the ground running yeah it's a 13 episode season and when
01:33:56.100you have a series that's like that that few episodes like so much has to happen in each
01:34:00.740episode so i'm excited to see there's not room for just like a let's just have a fun episode
01:34:04.660no everything no things have to happen i can't imagine there was anything too fun about anything
01:34:12.080that happened if spartacus actually existed i can't imagine anything fun about his life after
01:34:18.060he became a gladiator no i don't think you could true fair you can't really have a fun episode of
01:34:22.880this unless it's just like a day in the life of those women in those pools yes and you know the
01:34:28.480thing about it is is from if i remember correctly the whole story of spartacus takes place before
01:34:34.440julius caesar it takes place before augustus it it takes place quite bc um and so it's a story
01:34:46.400that this started like thousands of years ago that we still talk about today again this is another
01:34:53.540one of those things where typically we're talking about women in history how their their story has
01:34:58.040continued on until today this is a story that number one no one even knows if he actually
01:35:03.080existed or not if or if this is just a story someone created but for a let's just say for
01:35:08.060shits and giggles it's a story it was just created that still exists today they still
01:35:12.380interest people today I mean that's a hell of a story well that was something like when we decided
01:35:18.920to do the show I'm like I don't want to do too much deep diving into it because I want to be
01:35:23.080surprised by the events but I do I did look up I'm like I know that there's a movie Spartacus
01:35:27.380with like charlton heston from the 1950s and so i assumed i didn't know the basis of that i thought
01:35:33.900that this show was like inspired i thought there was a book i thought this was all a book but it
01:35:38.100says oh no this is actually a historical thing like did the person exist or not so like this
01:35:42.100show is inspired by the history um the movie spartacus was inspired by a novel that was
01:35:47.040inspired by spartacus so it's like the story keeps being told and retold like there's something
01:35:50.640captivating about the idea of somebody who's enslaved and then breaks free and just like
01:35:56.300that's there's something satisfying and like i think everyone can can root for someone like that
01:36:02.120yeah because if you know the story of spartacus he doesn't necessarily bring rome completely to
01:36:06.240their knees but he gets them down to at least one knee for quite a while too yeah and that's quite
01:36:12.120an accomplishment because that was kind of at the height of of rome i mean they were they were
01:36:18.200flourishing at that time they weren't you know getting conquered by anyone because they were
01:36:23.080spread themselves too thin at this point they were they were a force to be reckoned with and
01:36:28.140if you could accomplish that that was amazing well and that's why i think you have someone like
01:36:33.100andy whitfield's performance as spartacus like who is going to be able to do that to rome and
01:36:39.080it's like it has to be such an incredible person and the way that he portrays spartacus just in
01:36:43.500this first episode i'm like i can see that that is the person who could do that like he's such a
01:36:47.720such a strong character and if you're in love with him now you're just going to be more in love with
01:36:51.640him episode by episode because he just yeah i mean andy just does a phenomenal job and spartacus
01:36:59.420just yeah i mean he he knows he who he is and he he never lets that go he might have to make0.98
01:37:07.940some compromises here and there to survive but spartacus knows who the fuck he is yeah0.90
01:37:13.980it's such a good performance um like our next episode is gonna be episode two which i have0.54
01:37:20.820not yet watched um so i don't know what's going to happen can you do you have any can you give a
01:37:25.860hint of what what happens in episode two i don't want to spoil too much but it's basically going to
01:37:32.460be um his initiation to gladiator school being being part of the ludus yes um obviously he's
01:37:40.360the shiny new toy in a toy box so body artist is going to be a little bit more enamored with him
01:37:45.600And the existing gladiators are not going to like that because no one ever likes to feel like they're being replaced.
01:37:52.440So the next episode is going to kind of show him trying to get acclimated to his new surroundings, his new surroundings getting acclimated to him.
01:38:00.960We find out more we meet more new characters that reside within Badiatis's villa.
01:38:07.720um we start seeing more of the dynamic between lucretia and bariatas and realize that they are
01:38:13.480just as ride or die as anyone could ever be um we just we start seeing how what his life is really
01:38:21.320going to start to be coming um so again i don't want to give away too much but it's just it it
01:38:26.940shows him in his new surroundings and sort of the some of the pitfalls that go along with something
01:38:31.880like that especially when you're going to be surrounded by a bunch of men with so much
01:38:35.600testosterone going through them because that's what a gladiator would have and so you know there's
01:38:41.100just there's gonna be a lot of head butting i can imagine like and i have to imagine because i
01:38:45.560haven't watched it yet but so the episode two sacramentum gladiatorum so that episode will be
01:38:51.120out in two weeks um and so i want to let everybody know you can keep in touch with us

01:40:01.220on the show and i don't know it's our first episode so i feel like we want to have like
01:40:07.120a feral tagline like we want to have something to be like so i don't know if it's like keep
01:40:11.260fighting or like i don't know if it's like spartacus like i don't know and we're open to
01:40:15.720suggestions so if you want to email us you know some suggestions on what you would like to hear
01:40:20.300at the end of the episodes we are willing to hear them what's what did he say after when he killed
01:40:25.560all the people he was like yelling it's for his wife what did he say he's like for sora
01:40:29.740yes this episode would have been all about for sora you know what in memory of the hot wife
01:40:42.740um and again i don't know did she reappear in the show i don't know don't tell me but like
