00:00:00.000 hello and welcome to vulgar history feminist women's history comedy podcast my name is anne
00:00:17.400 foster and this is part five of there's something about mary queen of scots well i mean the whole
00:00:23.200 season is that but this is mary's story part five and here's what is lol about that i originally
00:00:28.620 thought I could tell her whole story in four episodes. Ha ha. Ha ha. Ha ha. Yeah. We're in
00:00:35.300 episode five and we're just getting to this. So anyway, I don't know if you can hear this in the
00:00:39.480 background, but I'm joined by my cat, whose name is Hepburn. And I think she's just here to be like,
00:00:44.300 I would like to remove myself from the narrative of Bothwell, the Earl, like James Hepburn. That
00:00:50.740 is not my family. She's like, I'm not from Scotland. Like we know that Hepburn, we know.
00:00:54.820 But I'm also joined by a human who is Alison Epstein.
00:00:59.040 Hello, also not related to Bothwell, also not from Scotland.
00:01:02.480 Also happy to be here.
00:01:04.220 Yeah, so last time Alison joined us because we were talking about
00:01:08.360 a person who is one of your most hated historical figures.
00:01:12.040 Yeah, Darnley?
00:01:13.180 He is certainly top 10.
00:01:15.880 Some days he's top five.
00:01:17.520 It varies based on the weather, but yeah, way, way, way up there.
00:01:20.480 his overall just i think british people say gormless like he's just he's got he changes
00:01:27.260 sides so easily he like doesn't have any principles other than just he thinks he's great 0.98
00:01:32.840 he would sell his mother out to get money to gamble with like he's just like a shitty 0.99
00:01:40.100 ass person there's no redeeming qualities maybe his handsomeness but maybe but you know there are 0.99
00:01:48.000 other people in this era who were handsome and are not like this. He reminds me of the John
00:01:53.220 Mulaney joke where you have the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair. That's definitely he's just
00:01:58.140 he's just like a bowl of porridge that showed up to betray his mother. It's like the worst.
00:02:05.820 He's like and when you contrast him with someone who's like a good person,
00:02:10.180 like a solid person, a person with loyalties like Davy Rizzio, tortoise of my heart.
00:02:15.360 I know just makes it so much more obvious how terrible he was and all he ever wanted was like 0.99
00:02:21.720 hey but can we have sex now oh my god like the selfishness and the the absolute dickheadedness 0.96
00:02:29.200 of it all so last episode we're recording these sequentially so I feel like you all know what 0.96
00:02:36.240 happened last episode it literally just happened but it's like no for people it's been a week
00:02:39.840 but I mean a lot happened last episode but big thing that happened last episode was that Darnley
00:02:45.100 teamed up with hollywood icon jimmy stewart some other dudes to 200 other people a douglas
00:02:52.460 um and they to murder davy rizzio tortoise of my heart and they did in the most clumsy
00:03:00.840 ill-prepared badly planned way like they did murder him but they didn't get any of the other
00:03:08.740 goals they wanted which were like to usurp control mcdarnley the king mcdarnley their puppet king
00:03:13.600 and take over the country in fact also it was 200 to 12 so if they hadn't murdered him it would
00:03:19.180 have been really really really sad yeah so what mary was able to escape by manipulating her
00:03:26.880 eclair filling of a husband to switch sides to her team and then she got the help of like people who
00:03:35.820 have had her back till now i don't mean to say that ominously it's just like people who've like
00:03:40.500 had her back like rizzio is now dead but so the people who are still loyal to her are like we've
00:03:44.380 got bothwell and we've got cock oh the north junior are both on her side there was a clutch
00:03:49.300 assist from the countess though she was smuggling letters and in p chamber pots like outstanding 1.00
00:03:56.720 it was the classic scheme happening in the ladies room it was delightful that's why women don't go 0.75
00:04:03.140 to the bathroom alone is because sometimes we're trying to scheme our way out of it so that last 0.73
00:04:07.820 week's episode ended in triumph basically because as we've talked about like one of the things that
00:04:11.980 mary very cannily did is she won the love of the people of scotland so even though like all these 0.88
00:04:18.440 protestant assholes and like aka her privy council all hate her all of parliament but the people the 0.67
00:04:26.020 everyday people love her and support her and they got her back into power and last episode ended 0.96
00:04:30.960 with her triumphantly re-entering edinburgh for i feel like the third time in this podcast series
00:04:36.820 She just keeps re-entering Edinburgh in triumph and her haters are just like, again, like the other thing that I guess I'll just mention is that Darnley had been on the side of the Rizzio murderers, but then he switched over to support Mary.
00:04:53.020 And you know who's mad about that are the Rizzio murderers.
00:04:58.500 a group of people who we know are prone to making a convoluted but successful murder plot so now
00:05:07.480 that they all hate Darnley you know we'll see where that all goes oh and one thing that I
00:05:12.720 brought up last time and I didn't I wanted to just clarify so one of the books that I was looking at
00:05:17.760 was called David Rizzio and Mary Queen of Scots Murder at Holyrood by David Tweedy and I mentioned
00:05:23.260 that David Tweedy's ancestors are notable and they are well actually first he is Sir David Tweedy
00:05:28.200 And secondly, his ancestors were among the Rizzio murderers. Their names are on those pieces of paper. So I appreciate that he, knowing that those are his ancestors, wrote this very sympathetic and very complete biography of Davy Rizzio. I find that very touching, actually.
00:05:45.820 so the references for this episode daughters of the north jean gordon a mary queen of scots by
00:05:51.380 jennifer morick henderson embroidering her truth mary queen of scots in the language of power by
00:05:55.460 claire hunter mary queen of scots and okay like skip ahead 30 seconds if you don't want some
00:06:00.620 spoilers and the murder of lord darnley by allison weir mary queen of scots downfall the life and
00:06:06.440 murder of henry lord darnley by robert stadell and mary queen of scots the true life of mary
00:06:11.260 steward by john guy yeah so the two shining stars supporting mary through all of this
00:06:16.260 extreme she's still pregnant she hasn't had her baby yet like she's been pregnant for the last
00:06:22.880 probably 90 minutes and i have been recording and i'm just like this baby oh my goodness yeah
00:06:28.200 yeah so but the two now the rizzio like again r.i.p rizzio is dead the two people who have her
00:06:35.520 back and the two people who like actively helped her escape all of this were bothwell and caco
00:06:39.360 the North Jr. So we mentioned this before, but here's the timeline of this all. Like
00:06:43.640 two weeks before the Davey Rizzio murder extravaganza, Bothwell had married Cocker the
00:06:49.080 North Jr.'s sister, Jean Gordon. And we know Mary loves wedding. So our girl was there honoring her
00:06:54.020 two best supporters as they kind of came together, joined their families. So the Davey Rizzio murder
00:06:58.800 happened, but the alliance between like Bothwell's family, like the Hepburns and Cocker the North
00:07:03.460 Jr., like the Gordons, was still going strong. Her two best guys and they're getting along with
00:07:07.960 each other and they're supporting her they're eating scrambled eggs things are good five in
00:07:13.740 the morning yeah so really in an interesting way where it's like at first you know there was that
00:07:20.680 with the chase boat raids and stuff like things were sort of like extreme and hikey for a while
00:07:24.980 but now i think mary even is just kind of like okay this is how things just are in scotland
00:07:28.940 like revolutions happen then you have some eggs and you all meet up for at parliament the next
00:07:35.020 day and things like things were like weirdly okay. It doesn't seem like they would be after
00:07:40.940 what we just talked about, the whole stabbing her best friend 56 times after throwing his body down
00:07:47.580 the stairs. But like, I guess we're just going to get back to business because someone's got a real
00:07:51.640 Scotland. Exactly. So Mary learned that Darnley's father Lennox had been complicit slash involved
00:07:57.580 in the Davy Rizzio murder in order to get Darnley the crown matrimonial. So she banished him from
00:08:03.000 court, but she couldn't banish Darnley because he was her baby daddy. Like he had to be around
00:08:09.040 for the birth of the child, for the christening of the child, just so there's no doubt in anyone's
00:08:13.240 mind that like he is the father of this child, right? So regardless, he had to be there. So
00:08:17.600 the conspirators had mostly escaped. Once they knew that they had lost, they fled. Like while
00:08:22.400 she was like en route to Edinburgh in triumph, like they were actively fleeing. So only two
00:08:27.920 minor figures were caught tried convicted and hanged for the crime oh sorry caught tried convicted
00:08:33.680 hanged drawn and quartered their severed parts put on display around town so they went for the
00:08:39.980 whole production yeah so so that of the like 500 people two two people took the fall for that
00:08:46.520 mary made darnley make an apology which you know he hated so he his apology was like i didn't know
00:08:54.980 anything about anything all i thought was i was going to help hollywood icon jimmy stewart and
00:08:59.860 his friends get their land back didn't know anything about any murder and this made the 0.96
00:09:04.380 assholes like the murderers so mad that they sent mary a copy of the document that he signed being 0.97
00:09:09.860 like i darnley agreed to help kill davy rizzio so anyway the paperwork of it all just really 0.99
00:09:16.780 it's hard to to hide what you're up to when everything is in paper and we know a lot of
00:09:24.000 the details that we do know about what happened with the murder and what happened after because
00:09:27.800 Mary herself wrote them in a letter to her ambassador in Paris. So six days after the
00:09:33.000 murder, she wrote this letter, but she sent it to him wanting him to share it with other Catholics
00:09:37.540 across like in Spain and at the Vatican and in France. It was published in the Netherlands is
00:09:42.340 a note I have. Was that like where the printing press existed? The only one in Europe? I don't
00:09:46.340 know i i feel like the netherlands were like a center of both like trades you could get a lot
00:09:54.160 of places easily but also like kind of a catholic center hold that maybe she wasn't as politically
00:10:00.500 connected to but i i think gutenberg was german i don't you know i don't know germany we'll have
00:10:05.560 to ask but i don't know germany all i know about the netherlands is that is where my artist friend
00:10:09.520 jan you peter who does some of my merch lives so it's a cool place anyway so this guy this friend
00:10:15.080 he translated her letter into Latin, published it in the Netherlands. And so basically,
00:10:19.920 in short order, anyone in Europe who could read Latin heard her version of what had happened that
00:10:24.940 night. And we love someone who will control the narrative. You know what? Good for her.
00:10:28.200 Yeah, exactly. Like there's no way that this was going to... No one ever thought she was complicit
00:10:33.940 in that at all. Meanwhile, Darnley is just kind of like living in his dream world.
00:10:40.360 He was also writing letters. He wrote letters to Catherine de' Medici in France.
00:10:45.080 Can you imagine Catherine de' Medici sitting at her breakfast table, sipping her Italian coffee, opening up a letter written by Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley? 0.85
00:10:55.480 And she's just like, this absolute muppet has written me. 0.82
00:11:00.600 Yeah. 0.86
00:11:01.200 Catherine.
00:11:02.180 I just, oh, boy.
00:11:03.560 The fact that they lived at the same time is insane to me. 0.99
00:11:06.000 It's ridiculous.
00:11:06.700 The fact he wrote her letter and he was like, hey, it's me, the king of Scotland. 0.75
00:11:09.960 And he's like, you know, I'm innocent.
00:11:11.560 I had nothing to do with that murder.
00:11:13.140 and like, let's all be Catholics together and like work together. He also wrote to Philip of
00:11:19.320 Spain, like the Philip. Um, he also wrote to the Pope and in his letters, it was just,
00:11:25.900 it's just like a guy losing his mind on Reddit. Like he's just complaining, like Scotland is
00:11:30.040 falling to pieces. You know, it should be a Catholic country, but it's not. And it's all
00:11:33.660 Mary's fault. Um, he also developed these like categorically ridiculous plans to invade England 0.93
00:11:41.600 by landing Catholic armies on these, like, random islands that England controlled. 0.97
00:11:47.600 One of them is called Skilly, and it's funny.
00:11:50.060 I just saw yesterday someone was tweeting that that's, like,
00:11:54.060 Prince William and Kate Middleton and their family like to go to holiday on this place, Skilly,
00:11:59.200 which is this kind of, like, island owned by England, but it's sort of tropical adjacent.
00:12:02.540 And I was like, Skilly? Well, that's the place why Darnley, insanely, wanted to invade from.
00:12:08.500 So anyway, still controlled by England, apparently.
00:12:11.160 Okay.
00:12:11.760 Anyway, he was losing his mind.
00:12:14.020 None of his plans made any sense.
00:12:16.360 And yeah.
00:12:17.860 He was not brought into this equation for his plans and his scheming skills.
00:12:23.240 He was brought in as a terrible bad decision that happened.
00:12:28.000 No one ever thought he was going to be the man with the plan.
00:12:31.500 No, but no one ever thought that he was going to be actively this.
00:12:35.740 Who would have ever thought that any human being could be this awful?
00:12:39.580 Anyway, meanwhile, back in England, like Sir Richard Attenborough from Jurassic Park, William Cecil, is he knew all about everything because his spies were everywhere.
00:12:49.520 And because everyone was writing him letters in triplicate with like signed and notarized things.
00:12:56.140 So he tried to trick Mary into doing a treason herself by sending a spy called Rokesby up to Scotland.
00:13:02.480 And Rokesby was like, oh, hey, what if we invade England?
00:13:05.260 You know, being a Catholic is great, right?
00:13:07.380 and mary saw right through it and also she was like at this point eight months pregnant and she's
00:13:13.680 not about to put her relationship with elizabeth slash england in any danger because remember her
00:13:17.660 goal at this point is still to be named elizabeth's heir she's not gonna like invade england anyway so
00:13:24.220 she saw rokesby did this and then mary wrote a great letter back to cecil being like oh hey so
00:13:28.480 this guy told me this weird stuff and it's very like heavy-handed and like subtextual it's like 0.99
00:13:32.300 i know what you're up to you piece of shit like if you don't stop like fucking around with me i'm 0.98
00:13:38.480 gonna tell elizabeth you did this she won't like it like it's it's a strongly worded letter i admire 1.00
00:13:42.740 it it's strongly worded yeah but polite this might have worked on my dumb ass husband but you gotta 0.97
00:13:49.100 get up earlier in the morning to fool me mary but also so she was also getting ready to go 0.97
00:13:54.780 into to have her baby and in this period of time a couple things firstly like as it is now 0.86
00:14:02.040 but childbirth is a dangerous thing right so also she's just like as far as they knew it's just like 0.65
00:14:08.440 sometimes women die in childbirth we don't know why or who or what what makes that happen or not
00:14:13.460 so she's like i might die but she's also like also when you have a baby you go into confinement for 0.64
00:14:20.160 months afterwards which is more maternity leave than you get in the united states but um but in
00:14:27.140 her case that meant that she would be away from everything for months and she's like someone could 0.99
00:14:30.880 do a coup. Like I need to like get everything in line because I'm going to either die
00:14:35.380 or just be tucked away in a room for a month. And like, I need to still be queen
00:14:40.100 after that if I'm alive. So she went to go to Edinburgh Castle, which was because she's usually
00:14:45.880 at Holyrood. Although I feel like the memory, like personally, I would not want to live at
00:14:50.640 Holyrood anymore, having seen my best friend stabbed 56 times in front of me.
00:14:56.060 the blood would still be there five centuries later it seems like the haunted ghost blood
00:15:00.860 so she went to edinburgh castle which was like more secure anyway so she wrote a detailed will
00:15:06.240 beforehand including she uh said that she wanted to give the tortoise the jeweled tortoise that
00:15:11.800 davy had given her she bequeathed that to joseph rizzio that's right davy's 19 year old brother
00:15:19.500 she'd invited him to town and what did she do made him her new private secretary
00:15:24.140 can you imagine the 200 people who had just gone through the most convoluted stabbing of all time
00:15:34.240 being like and now there's another one yeah yeah i i love that detail i did not know that detail
00:15:40.900 until i was doing this research and i'm like also i love that she bequeathed the tortoise to him
00:15:45.720 and so she wrote so she like wrote this list of like what jewel to give to who and there's all
00:15:49.520 these like secret like not cipher not coat like she wrote in code as well and we'll talk about
00:15:53.600 that later but she just kind of has these messages along the side she's like you know what i mean or
00:15:58.360 like do with it what we talked about so she told him you know i want to bequeath this jeweled
00:16:03.740 tortoise to you joseph rizzio do with it as we discussed so like oh so sneaky is it a key to a
00:16:11.680 secret treasure map or was she just like you know whatever sell this and start up a trust fund for
00:16:17.500 the Rizzio family. I don't know. Anyway, but I appreciate that.
00:16:21.300 But marry either one is possible.
00:16:23.100 Yeah. And then she also, at this point, she, um,
00:16:25.580 another jewel I just wanted to mention was there was a mermaid shaped jewel
00:16:30.280 that, Oh, I know that she bequeathed it to Bothwell.
00:16:33.700 I forget if he had given it to her in the first place,
00:16:35.280 but like mermaid was clearly like a shared thing between them,
00:16:39.360 the way that owl is with you and your friend.
00:16:41.540 So there was a mermaid shaped jewel that she was bequeathing to Bothwell as
00:16:45.060 well anyway so time for her lying in period so there's a series of rituals happen you know like
00:16:52.020 catholicism is sometimes indistinguishable from just like ritual druid pagan stuff you know where
00:17:00.380 it's like there's a torchlight procession and people are walking and then they process into
00:17:04.740 her bedchamber like it's a whole thing love a ritual yeah no i love a torchlight procession
00:17:13.160 So anyway, the windows were covered in dark cloth in the room that she would be in because
00:17:16.300 people thought that light was harmful for childbirth.
00:17:20.640 You know what?
00:17:21.120 I don't know.
00:17:21.460 Maybe it is. 0.97
00:17:22.540 Anyway, so she would just stay sequestered there until the baby was born and then for 0.63
00:17:25.980 one month later and she'd only be attended by women, which I feel like of all the people
00:17:30.900 in the story, the people, she's never been betrayed by any of her women, you know, like
00:17:35.880 the countess was there for her in a clutch moment.
00:17:39.020 The Mary's always there for her.
00:17:41.140 like so i think she could feel as safe as possible knowing that the women were around her although
00:17:45.620 understandably paranoid and so she got like she like whatever quadrupled that amount of guards
00:17:50.480 who were around her and she got a guy named the earl of argyle who she trusted to move into the
00:17:55.120 room outside and to stay there night and day so that she always had sort of a personal bodyguard
00:17:59.120 there because the whole davy rizzio thing she understandably thought like they were gonna maybe
00:18:05.760 also kill her like that might have been an attempted assassination like because they pointed 0.87
00:18:09.960 a gun at her pregnant belly and fired it, you know, she thought maybe they wanted to kill her. 0.78
00:18:15.560 So she is worried for her own safety. Okay. So she gave birth. And this is,
00:18:20.340 this is a detail I added at the last minute because I was contacted by a recent,
00:18:26.540 a recent fan of the podcast who turns out to be descended from someone who was there at the birth.
00:18:32.820 And so one of the people who was at the birth was named Margaret Fleming. So she's the Countess of
00:18:38.240 argyle i presume married to the guy who's called argyle who's like the bodyguard but margaret
00:18:43.120 fleming is the sister of mary fleming who's one of the four marys she's also the daughter of
00:18:48.100 janet fleming mary's governess who ended up getting pregnant by the french king and got
00:18:53.240 kicked back to scotland if you will remember back in like episode one anyway so the fleming family
00:18:57.860 full of scandal margaret was also a witch yes she was brought in in an attempt to transfer mary's 1.00
00:19:05.140 labor pains onto the wet nurse and that sucks to be the wet nurse rude yeah but you know what did 0.96
00:19:12.160 not work but you know she's brought in to maybe try to do that i think i'm going to talk more
00:19:16.360 about margaret fleming later but here's what's interesting so after okay after a prolonged and
00:19:21.940 difficult labor mary gave birth to a son who should name james after every other man in this story
00:19:26.180 but specifically her father and grandfather we're going to call him baby jamie or bj but later on
00:19:32.800 he becomes King James first slash sixth, who I know, who is the husband of Anne of Denmark.
00:19:38.780 I did a whole episode about that. He's the like famous, I don't know, Alison, can you give a
00:19:42.300 pricey on his deal? King James is the King James of the King James Bible. He is the responsible
00:19:50.860 for most of the witch burnings that happened in England at this point. He was kind of a wacky,
00:19:56.340 eccentric man who hated women and black magic and just made a mess of things in england he was 0.56
00:20:04.180 he was a lot so i love that you mentioned the witch cuff because don't you find it interesting 0.95
00:20:08.580 there was a witch present at his birth and i bet he hated that every day of his life here's the
00:20:14.920 thing so margaret fleming like she lived a long life after this and even when james became king
00:20:20.540 and he was like witch burning and like witch hunting and whatever he never went after margaret
00:20:24.880 Fleming because she had been present at his birth. And that would put his birth into question
00:20:29.060 if he accused her of being a witch. It's what he deserves, really. 1.00
00:20:34.460 So I appreciate that for her. And we're going to talk more about Margaret Fleming in a later
00:20:38.720 episode, I think. Now that I know that she exists, I'm excited to learn more about her.
00:20:42.440 Anyway, but it was a son. Not just having a baby, but having a son was what everybody wanted. So
00:20:49.720 her popularity increased in Scotland. And even in England, people are like, oh my God, a woman
00:20:54.480 who's married and has a child. We like that better than our weird spinster lady queen called 0.95
00:20:59.160 Elizabeth. So more people are kind of like, we prefer her as queen because she's doing the like, 0.91
00:21:05.140 you know, things we expect women to do, having sons. But also people just excited for a royal 0.92
00:21:10.360 baby. 500 bonfires were lit in Edinburgh and its suburbs. People in Edinburgh, like I talked in a
00:21:16.500 previous one, like fireworks were a thing, bonfires were a thing. People, it was like,
00:21:20.020 people just figure out what you can do with fire and with gunpowder in a interesting way in this
00:21:25.900 era she says portentously anyway the guns of edinburgh castle were fired people broke out
00:21:31.080 in a spontaneous rejoicing it was a happy thing but mary she's always had health issues right
00:21:35.880 so like not just like how would the hormones maybe trigger her potential porphyria or whatever 0.98
00:21:41.280 her chronic illness was but like she had this birth that was like challenging and like she
00:21:46.520 had just watched her best friend be murdered in front of her like yeah it's been a hard couple
00:21:51.960 of months yeah exactly exactly so in july so she stayed in the room for a month and it's like you 1.00
00:21:58.520 know what you know who deserves a month-long nap is this lady so she left her birthing chamber and
00:22:03.420 went on holiday so and when i say she went on holiday this is kind of like an empress cc thing
00:22:08.440 where it's just like she's very sick and is going somewhere else to go lie down sort of holiday
00:22:15.000 um but maybe you know the same as when the doctors were saying like oh no if she doesn't
00:22:20.220 get fresh air she'll have a miscarriage like i think she just needed fresh air and like get away
00:22:24.120 and just away from the like city where her best friend had just been stabbed in front of her and
00:22:28.400 she was almost betrayed and murdered by those closest to her yeah i mean being surrounded by
00:22:32.720 people who you can't trust 100 of the time with a newborn baby like the stress of that even if you
00:22:39.280 don't have existing health issues that's gonna you know that's not gonna be good for you in your
00:22:44.280 recovery anyway no and these are the things i want us to keep in mind when people like oh mary
00:22:48.040 she wasn't a strong queen or whatever it's like okay let's see how you would do in this situation
00:22:53.500 like let's see how if we want to compare them like how would elizabeth have done in this situation 1.00
00:22:58.460 like no one could have done better than what she had done like she just used her smarts and her
00:23:03.640 wiles to like undo a coup yep and now she just had a baby so anyway i feel like the reason people
00:23:11.600 don't give mary enough credit for like her scheminess and her like cleverness is because
00:23:17.220 the things that she schemed worked and so the disasters that she avoided never happened like 0.99
00:23:22.080 if there was a coup and she had to like scheme her way back to the throne we'd be like oh look 0.99
00:23:26.720 at this clever queen but because she was so good at it she stopped these things before they became 0.89
00:23:31.040 dramatic and now we're just like it looks like she didn't do that much but she was good at it
00:23:35.360 yeah exactly exactly like some of like i mentioned all the books that i've read and i don't want to
00:23:39.760 any shade to any of the books I've read, but they all have a different point of view. And some of
00:23:44.120 them propose that Darnley himself decided to escape. Mary didn't have to coerce or manipulate 0.88
00:23:52.980 him into doing that, which I think is incorrect. I don't think Darnley was like, oh no, my number
00:23:58.220 is up. I'll just escape with Mary. No, she got him to do that. Clearly. Darnley-
00:24:03.880 Yeah, we've discussed already Darnley's common sense. It's not a thing he was known for. He was
00:24:08.560 never gonna think one step ahead let alone no exactly so people even in that like people just
00:24:13.040 often historians don't want to give her credit where i think credit is due so that's where i
00:24:19.620 appreciate especially people who well i appreciate everyone who's listening to this but people who've
00:24:23.120 never heard this story before aren't coming in with the pre-existing understanding of like oh
00:24:27.320 she's just this poor victim who never did anything it's like no to those people she's like a woman
00:24:32.540 with a plan who is just like succeeding, basically. So remember that. Anyway, so she went on holiday
00:24:39.460 to this place. And because, okay, I find it startling, but she has forgiven Hollywood icon
00:24:46.520 Jimmy Stewart by this point. You might think how and why, but it's like, there's not a lot.
00:24:51.520 To make anything function, she couldn't stay mad at everybody all the time. And remember when she
00:24:56.380 was captive, he was like, oh, I'm sorry. And he was like, out of town when it happened. So she
00:25:02.060 didn't know directly how much he was involved, maybe, but she knew that he was influential and
00:25:06.300 she had to keep him on side. So anyway, they're in the good books again, apparently. Bothwell also
00:25:11.440 went with her on this holiday trip, along with lots of other people. Durnley did not go on this
00:25:15.900 trip because he was too busy saying, like, I'm going to run away to the Netherlands, you know,
00:25:20.480 and just being like, isn't anyone going to stop me? No? No, please leave. Please. Go. No. He wasn't
00:25:28.520 invited. But then when he found out that she was going on holiday without him, he crashed the party
00:25:32.860 long enough to get in a yelling fight with Mary in front of witnesses. Can you guess,
00:25:37.440 I'm going to give you one guess, what he was demanding from her?
00:25:40.520 Well, I have two guesses. And it's either sex or the crown matrimonial. I don't remember which 0.98
00:25:45.060 one it was this time. It was sex. He was just like, why don't you have sex with me? You just
00:25:48.640 gave birth a month ago in Renaissance, Scotland. Your friend was just killed. You have a chronic
00:25:54.020 disease and you're actively convalescing why won't you have sex with my heart so he got in a fight 1.00
00:25:58.640 and everyone who saw it was just like this fucking guy so it's no secret that he's the worst he was 1.00
00:26:05.160 also planning to kidnap their son so that he could then rule as regent in his name or something not 0.99
00:26:12.200 the first child kidnapping in this season probably also not the last no so he's just coming with
00:26:18.060 various plans. Mary found out that someone was going to try and kidnap BJ, someone named Darnley.
00:26:25.080 So she moved the baby to Sterling Castle, which again is just kind of like, I guess Edinburgh
00:26:30.220 Castle is more secure than Holyrood, but Sterling is like the most secure. That's where her mother
00:26:34.700 took her when she was at risk of being baby kidnapped as well. Because it's like on a cliff,
00:26:39.100 it's like hard to get to. Anyway, to make this trip, she raised Mary. She got 50 musketeers
00:26:45.840 to surround the carriage as they went to protect to make sure that the baby wasn't kidnapped by 0.99
00:26:51.640 oh sorry 500 500 musketeers that's so many musketeers that's so many it's so many anyway 0.95
00:26:59.700 so she went there and you know he wasn't kidnapped so it was probably good again that was a good 0.98
00:27:03.560 choice if she hadn't done that maybe he would have been kidnapped and we'd be like she's so dumb 0.68
00:27:06.700 so she left him there and then went to resume her like quote-unquote holiday like just and this is 1.00
00:27:12.520 normal like to leave babies with wet nurses and whatever but also she just needed to get herself
00:27:17.600 better to like get back in queen shape so by september she so she was slowly forgiving more
00:27:24.560 and more of the rizzio conspirators because otherwise she wouldn't have anyone on her in
00:27:30.520 her parliament right if the alternative is go to war with the entire government eventually you're
00:27:35.060 gonna have to be like okay yeah right so like first she like forgave hollywood icon jimmy
00:27:39.320 stewart then she forgave scottish machiavelli who came to return to his position darnley was
00:27:44.380 furious about that she thought that she was reconciling with these guys to build consensus
00:27:48.900 against him because they all hated him because he betrayed them actually everybody hates you 0.64
00:27:53.440 darnley it would be really hard to put someone in government that doesn't yeah like there is a
00:27:57.440 consensus of everyone hates you she doesn't have to do anything to make that consensus happen 1.00
00:28:02.760 so then in front everything he did like he's messy bitch lives for drama but he like does 0.99
00:28:08.660 a real sort of like reality star. I don't know. I'm just going to throw out Vanderpump rules. I 0.98
00:28:14.800 don't know. But like everything he did that was shocking, he made sure he did it in front of
00:28:18.700 witnesses. Like he always did everything publicly. He wanted to shock people. So he announced in
00:28:23.980 front of witnesses that he planned to separate from her and go live abroad. I guess. And Mary's
00:28:28.760 like, oh, thank God. She was not because everyone is like, no, like they needed him to stay because
00:28:33.920 like at least like Darnley in the wild who knows what he would get up to but at least in Scotland
00:28:38.680 like they could keep an eye on him so they wanted to keep him in Scotland not that they wanted him
00:28:43.000 around but like he was maybe more of a wild card danger if he went to whatever Netherlands so
00:28:49.040 remember he had written to Catherine de Medici so the Privy Council also wrote to Catherine de
00:28:54.240 Medici saying like hi Darnley is insane please if he comes to France to start up his own like
00:28:59.780 kangaroo court don't support him he is insane and i'm sure katherine was like katherine's like
00:29:05.260 noted i kind of figured that out but thanks for the heads up so anyway so then mary you know
00:29:11.600 she's feeling better i guess like i don't mean she's she is better but she's feeling better she's 0.97
00:29:16.900 able to go horseback riding and do some queen duties and things so one of her queen duties was
00:29:21.600 to go down towards the english scottish border to a place called jed burke or jed burra just to go
00:29:27.980 oversee criminal cases and like
00:29:30.000 go visit with her subjects and be like hey remember me
00:29:31.940 you all love me great so the
00:29:33.960 borders was this is Bothwell's home 1.00
00:29:36.020 turf like that's where the Hepburns all live so
00:29:37.920 he went down first to get things ready for her arrival 0.97
00:29:39.940 but while he was
00:29:41.980 there he was attacked by a person
00:29:43.820 whose name was Jack
00:29:45.860 O'The Park
00:29:46.820 a real
00:29:50.000 cartoon character of a man
00:29:51.860 it's giving me big Bush Rangers energy
00:29:54.180 it really is getting into like
00:29:55.940 Captain Thunderbolt
00:29:57.980 territory so yeah so he was attacked by jackal the park and then mary was so she headed down
00:30:05.460 to jedburgh darnley obviously not with her he was busy like pouting or whatever but she had
00:30:09.380 hollywood i can jimmy stewart was with her scottish machiavelli was there cockles and
00:30:13.080 jr like 40 other men so en route they got word that bothwell had been violently ambushed by
00:30:18.120 jackal the park and they thought maybe he was dead but he was not dead but he had been injured by
00:30:23.020 with sword wounds so you know not great no exactly sword wounds never never a good thing
00:30:29.060 so for a week she stayed in jedburgh jedburgh doing all of her like queen work and then after
00:30:35.100 that she and the 40 men she was with went to visit bothwell they went to check in on him they saw
00:30:40.460 like oh he's not dying great and then they left so there is a persistent myth that when mary heard
00:30:48.280 Bothwell was ill. She went off by herself right away to go be by his side. That is not true.
00:30:56.100 She heard he was maybe injured, did work for a week, and then with 40 other men went to check
00:31:02.800 on him. So I just wanted to point that out because that's a misunderstanding that some people,
00:31:07.940 her haters would later claim. Because, I mean, I'll say now, her haters started spreading rumors
00:31:14.740 that she and Bothwell were having an affair. And this experience is not evidence of that
00:31:20.460 at all. Like if I were having an affair, I probably would not bring 40 other men with me
00:31:25.060 to watch. Yeah. And I wouldn't be like, oh my God, my lover was almost killed. Let me just like
00:31:30.160 work for a week and then go there with 40 other men. Anyway, so a few days later, she felt
00:31:36.560 incredibly ill from quote spleen, which today we know is the name of an organ, but back then was
00:31:43.020 the name of a malady, I guess. And this was really intense. So she had convulsions. She lost the
00:31:50.220 power of speech. She lost the power of sight. She laid stiff as though she was dead. Like her body
00:31:55.940 was all clenched up. This was over the course of a week. It just got worse. Worse and worse.
00:31:59.720 Her doctor, Charles Now, who is French, he saved the day by wrapping her up really tight like a 1.00
00:32:06.760 mummy and then massaging her muscles so they would bend and then forcing wine in her mouth 0.94
00:32:11.920 and an enema up her bum and then she like vomited blood and then got better so huh the human body's 0.59
00:32:20.860 a mystery so this was probably again not her chronic porphyria condition it some people say
00:32:28.420 that the symptoms sound more like a gastric ulcer that burst maybe and so in an era before blood
00:32:33.960 transfusions what he did helped her and in fact she did get better but like she like was so close
00:32:40.520 to dying everybody like herself but also the advisors were just like oh my god if she died
00:32:45.560 leaving a baby king does that mean darnley would be injured lord alive that was quite catastrophic
00:32:54.020 for everybody to imagine they also blamed darnley for her medical situation because he had i guess
00:33:00.180 visited her recently but it's like you can't blame darnley for like her ulcer bursting but
00:33:04.340 you can't blame him you can try them oh yeah oh i would but i think you can blame him for upsetting
00:33:09.080 her. Scottish Machiavelli wrote in a letter, it is heartbreak for her to think that he should be
00:33:13.860 her husband and how to be free of him. She sees no way out. Oh yeah. So speaking of Scottish
00:33:19.680 Machiavelli, a guy who I have to emphasize people then called the Scottish Machiavelli. He's a really
00:33:25.520 crafty guy. His real name is Maitland and he was her like secretary of state, but he's the Scottish
00:33:33.120 Machiavelli to me and so he was like hmm okay Darnley sucks so maybe the best thing for like
00:33:39.760 everyone by which I mean me is if someone murdered Darnley hypothetically speaking now I'm gonna say 0.96
00:33:47.460 Darnley does suck and I would not blame anyone for murdering him and this isn't a reason to murder
00:33:52.680 him but note that when Mary was like actively almost dying he didn't come to visit her until 0.98
00:33:57.640 at the end when she had already gotten better. So. Although if I saw Darnley when I was sick,
00:34:02.960 it would make me feel worse. Actually, that's true. In retrospect, maybe a good call. Anyway,
00:34:08.920 so then Mary got sick again. And this time it was probably the porphyria. So like I talked about
00:34:13.720 that a bit in like, I think one of the first episodes, but it's something like it's a chronic
00:34:17.580 condition that can be triggered by various things. One of them is like when you fasting, basically,
00:34:22.320 if you don't eat enough, it can be triggered. And when she got distressed, she would lose her
00:34:26.760 appetite and she would stop eating. So then this would happen. And the porphyria, like the symptoms
00:34:31.300 are like severe stomach pains and things like that, but also what's what they call a melancholy,
00:34:36.960 but just like extreme depression because like there's a mental, I don't blame her for having
00:34:41.900 extreme depression as a person in this situation at all, but like, but like this would come
00:34:46.320 simultaneously. Like she would get horrible stomach pains and she would express suicidal
00:34:51.160 ideation. And then once she got better, she would stop. So it's like the mental illness was part of
00:34:56.180 of porphyria as well. So probably having the gastric ulcer triggered the porphyria to come
00:35:03.540 up again. She was heard to repeat, I wish I could be dead over and over. But she was also thinking
00:35:09.920 like the whole thing about like, if she died, like what next? She didn't want Darnley to be in
00:35:15.100 charge. So she wrote to Elizabeth asking her, like, should Mary die? Like, please step in and
00:35:20.340 be the protector of baby BJ. And which was actually like a really good move. Like firstly,
00:35:26.460 just like, yeah, it like sidelines Darnley, but also it also makes Elizabeth be like, huh, 0.82
00:35:31.440 maybe I do want to consider Mary my heir. This is a nice thing she did. And Elizabeth at this point, 0.53
00:35:37.200 like she was annoyed how Cecil and the other advisor kept telling her what to do, which is
00:35:41.080 like, fair enough. He did seem his advice was good, but she was like, you know what? Sure.
00:35:44.860 So she proposed that they could write a new treaty that would be kind of like, okay, like 0.96
00:35:49.560 Mary will be my heir, but put in lots of like codicils being like, but she can't be if Elizabeth 0.91
00:35:55.020 is assassinated or whatever. Just to be kind of like, Mary's heirs will be my heirs, basically.
00:36:00.360 But if Mary decides to kill me, she can't be queen, but we're not going to do that.
00:36:04.120 Yeah. So it's just really carefully written. So they were writing letters back and forth and
00:36:08.660 things like honestly had never seemed as positive between them for a while. So there had been this
00:36:12.960 old treaty of Edinburgh that was like a thing that before Mary was even in Scotland, I think
00:36:18.500 hollywood icon jimmy stewart and the english wrote this thing that basically said you know like
00:36:22.920 i don't know it was like england can take over or whatever mary has no power and so she never
00:36:27.940 ratified it so but elizabeth was like you know what that's fine you don't have to ratify it we're
00:36:32.140 going to write this new treaty of perpetual amity everything seemed to be like going in a good
00:36:37.860 direction this was february 8th and the next day darnley was murdered and everything went to hell
00:36:48.500 So we'll rewind a little bit to explain what happened.
00:36:53.880 Although that's probably not a surprise to you
00:36:55.580 if you did listen to the names of animals.
00:36:57.580 The fact that like two of the books are called
00:36:58.940 The Murderer of Lord Darnley.
00:37:01.540 Yeah, yeah.
00:37:02.740 So rewind 10 minutes ago.
00:37:06.220 So when Mary fell ill in Jedborough,
00:37:08.400 when she had the thing where the doctor had to rap rap
00:37:10.760 like a mummy and force wine down her throat.
00:37:12.740 So the Ritzio conspirators, 0.99
00:37:15.600 who are still like a group of just murderers.
00:37:18.980 They blame Darnley for upsetting her too much.
00:37:21.740 You know what else probably upset her?
00:37:23.520 Your murders. 0.89
00:37:25.500 You murdering her best friend in front of her 0.91
00:37:28.120 by stabbing him 56 times and then trying to take over?
00:37:31.940 Can't imagine how that might be upsetting.
00:37:34.560 Yeah, so they just got together to,
00:37:37.800 and I think I might call the episode this,
00:37:39.320 how do you solve a problem like Darnley?
00:37:41.300 They're just like, what are we going to do?
00:37:43.640 They're like, so we hate Darnley. Agreed. But like his dad, his dad is Lennox. And also he's
00:37:50.320 connected to the Douglas. A Douglas is. His family's powerful. So how can we get rid of him
00:37:54.960 in a way that won't like, you know, start a war with them? So what they wanted was to convince
00:38:01.480 somehow Mary if she could pardon Jam Jam, if you'll remember, and the other exiled Ritzio 0.98
00:38:07.980 murderers and recall them to Scotland, because then the Ritzio murderers could get together
00:38:12.360 and that would maybe counterbalance the Lennox faction. 0.93
00:38:15.440 So they needed to get those guys all back on the scene.
00:38:18.000 And I think I mentioned before,
00:38:18.960 like they were starting to get back on the scene.
00:38:20.760 So that's because these guys are plotting it.
00:38:22.880 This is a real reunion tour for the Ritzio murders.
00:38:25.600 Yeah. 0.98
00:38:26.500 So they're like, well, how can we get her to pardon all of them?
00:38:29.200 And so Scottish Machiavelli was like, okay, plan A,
00:38:31.420 let's get Mary a divorce so that Darnley can't attempt a coup
00:38:35.160 because if they're not married, 0.98
00:38:36.700 then he doesn't have any claim to anything.
00:38:38.940 And in this era and time, it was like no big deal,
00:38:41.720 seemingly for uh women especially protestant women to get a divorce like you remember
00:38:47.320 riven who is dying of cancer clanking around his armor like his wife had divorced him like while
00:38:53.600 he was dying like you could just casually get divorced in scotland at this time no big deal
00:38:57.620 but mary like that's not an option for her because she's the queen and her son can be
00:39:01.940 illegitimate etc and also she's catholic and the pope is famously not not into divorcing yeah
00:39:07.560 Exactly. But Scottish Mikey Valy was like, OK, if we can arrange for her to get a divorce, Mary will be so grateful that we helped her get a divorce that she'll agree to pardon the murderers.
00:39:17.580 But Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart and Cock of the North Jr.
00:39:20.840 Cock of the North Jr. and Bothwell are involved in these talks, by the way.
00:39:24.620 So it's not just the Rizzio murderers. It's like everybody.
00:39:29.660 All of the people in the entire kingdom are like, OK, guys. 1.00
00:39:33.140 you know it's like catholic protestant doesn't matter it's like we all hate this fucking guy 0.60
00:39:38.020 so much let's figure this out team okay so anyway they're like she's not she's like what you just 0.95
00:39:45.440 said allison like mary is never going to agree to a divorce for catholic reason but scottish
00:39:49.140 machiavelli was like but maybe she will so eventually um he convinced them so he because
00:39:55.800 he is the scottish machiavelli he's persuasive good at convincing so eventually he got bothwell
00:40:01.880 Hollywood, I can Jimmy Stewart, Cocker the North Jr., and Argyle, the guy who had sat outside the
00:40:06.440 birth room to work on this new plan to encourage her to divorce Darnley. So eventually, Scottish
00:40:11.600 Machiavelli went to her. I guess he was like, I'm the most persuasive. I'll be one who can persuade
00:40:15.460 her. And he's like, what have you divorced? Darnley. And she's like, no, because that puts
00:40:19.620 my son's legitimacy into question, etc. In her usual way, she was like, what if everyone just
00:40:26.000 acts cool and we stop having murders and civil wars wasn't that be a novel idea for five minutes
00:40:36.540 well and this is especially because the elizabeth thing was in the works like she didn't want to 1.00
00:40:40.160 make any big moves she didn't want any scandal to happen that would risk this treaty with elizabeth 0.99
00:40:45.240 not working out for her to like get what she wanted which is to be named elizabeth's heir 1.00
00:40:49.560 and like divorcing darnley would probably make elizabeth change her mind right so scottish
00:40:53.900 Machiavelli was like, okay, cool.
00:40:55.380 Forget, forget I ever suggested anything.
00:40:58.980 So then it's time for the baptism of baby BJ.
00:41:03.480 This is six months after his birth
00:41:05.300 because a lot had happened.
00:41:09.900 Mary almost died twice, et cetera.
00:41:11.940 So she planned this extravaganza,
00:41:13.960 this three-day celebration modeled on festivities
00:41:16.700 that Catherine de' Medici had recently held in France
00:41:18.840 the year before.
00:41:20.020 And the festivities Catherine had done
00:41:21.740 were sort of like a big reconciliation celebration
00:41:23.920 where she's like, hey, Catholics and Huguenots, 0.87
00:41:26.960 what if not murdering each other? 1.00
00:41:29.520 Let's have a party.
00:41:30.900 So Mary wanted her thing to be modeled after that
00:41:33.400 just because it was a great party,
00:41:34.640 but also because in a similar reconciliation thing,
00:41:37.520 like, hey, Catholics and Protestants,
00:41:39.360 let's all be cool.
00:41:41.300 Can I say, if I was a French Catholic
00:41:43.080 or a French Protestant,
00:41:44.620 and Catherine of Medici threw another party
00:41:47.120 and said, do you want to come to this party?
00:41:49.600 I swear I won't murder anybody anymore.
00:41:51.740 I feel like I might not believe that.
00:41:54.860 Yeah.
00:41:55.880 I mean, and that would be fair.
00:41:57.940 So she had this big party and she invited all the monarchs of the other countries.
00:42:02.020 The monarchs couldn't come because they're busy, but they each sent representatives.
00:42:05.180 And even though it was her big reconciliation party event, it was a Catholic baptism.
00:42:09.600 So the Protestant lords boycotted her allies at this point who were Protestant attended,
00:42:14.320 but they just stood outside of the actual chapel for the actual baptism part.
00:42:17.700 That's Hollywood Act on Jimmy Stewart, Bothwell and Cocker the North Jr.
00:42:20.240 as the okay as the godparents for baby bj godfather she chose the duke of savoy who was
00:42:29.040 rizzio's boss so i think that's her way of just like a nod towards how much she loved
00:42:34.560 davy rizzio because she couldn't choose like his like 19 year old brother joseph rizzio as
00:42:38.940 godfather he's just like some guy but like she had to do some royal so she chose the duke of
00:42:42.660 savoy so the i like that as a rizzio connection as godmother she chose elizabeth for political
00:42:49.640 reasons but also it was a very smart oh definitely and it's because elizabeth is the like protector
00:42:54.680 and stuff so elizabeth couldn't come of course she's busy but she sent along this baptism present
00:43:00.920 this like this font so like a fountain made of solid gold this like gigantic jewel encrusted
00:43:09.560 humongous thing and she like as a gift so i don't know if giving gifts is also her love language but
00:43:15.680 i guess she told people she's like play it down tell mary it's like oh i don't know if it's big
00:43:18.960 enough to like baptize the baby in and then when it arrives it's like you could baptize 12 babies
00:43:23.680 in this it's this like ridiculously ostentatious thing i love it yeah well and i think she was
00:43:28.400 like this is for you to baptize your baby in and all your future babies you're going to have
00:43:31.480 like it was it's a nice gesture darnley did not attend because he was busy making schemes or like
00:43:39.280 visiting the brothels or like whatever he did trying to hire a boat to sail him to the netherlands
00:43:44.660 or whatever he was doing.
00:43:46.180 And now we're just going to take a break

00:46:35.560 And we're back.
00:46:37.000 I have the vaguest memory that he was having like a syphilis flare up again.
00:46:40.480 And so that's why he didn't go.
00:46:41.880 But I'm not sure if that's true.
00:46:42.900 That is entirely could be true.
00:46:44.660 Because he's going to have a really bad syphilis flare up very soon.
00:46:47.480 So with him absent, and honestly, nobody missed him.
00:46:50.520 I like this.
00:46:51.060 Even the people, even the haters weren't like, where is Darnley?
00:46:54.300 Does that mean the baby is illegitimate? 0.99
00:46:55.740 everyone's like thank god he's not here he's not here great so she just got her other guys her like
00:47:04.380 trusted advisors to step up to like be you know be the man to greet the ambassadors and whatever
00:47:08.740 so like bothwell took that role hollywood egg and jimmy stewart is there cockenoff jr like they
00:47:13.220 were all she gave them each outfits i forget who got what color but it's like she gave one a blue
00:47:16.880 outfit and one a green outfit i want a red outfit i love it she's she's got so much style she does
00:47:23.600 Like fashion, she really makes a statement. The ambassador, because Elizabeth couldn't be there. 0.99
00:47:28.260 So her representative was a guy named Bedford, who William Cecil had chosen. And his job was to
00:47:35.680 sweet talk Mary into pardoning the David Rizzio co-conspirators. That was because, well, Cecil
00:47:43.100 wanted them back in Scotland just kind of to cause chaos, to destabilize her reign,
00:47:47.720 because that was what he wanted, long-term plan. Like Cecil wasn't like, let's assassinate Mary.
00:47:53.260 He wasn't like, let's, he was just like, let's like just put a whole bunch of assholes there, wait for chaos to happen, and then inevitably that will destabilize her reign. 0.99
00:48:03.220 And that's why he's so good at scheming, because he's always thinking ahead. 0.99
00:48:07.060 Yeah, because you can get caught in an assassination. 0.55
00:48:09.300 It's hard to get caught in subtly destabilizing her reign enough so that she doesn't have the power to serve anybody.
00:48:16.800 Like that, you're home free that way.
00:48:18.760 This is where I would call Cecil the English Machiavelli, but I've never seen people call
00:48:23.380 him that. So he wanted Bedford to do this. But meanwhile, Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart and
00:48:28.840 Bothwell also wanted those guys back because they wanted them back. They wanted the Douglasists 0.99
00:48:34.500 back. Like they wanted the Rizzio murderers back so that they could help get rid of Darnley. 0.99
00:48:39.280 So they were, so this guy Bedford is like, maybe you should forgive these guys. And then her like
00:48:43.560 trusted guys, Bothwell and Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart were like, that's a great idea. Maybe
00:48:47.680 you should pardon those guys. And she's like, maybe I should. So on Christmas Eve, she pardoned
00:48:54.000 Jam Jam and over 70 other of the murderers, including even the guy who had held the pistol
00:48:58.840 to her belly. That's a bold move. Which is a guy I personally would not have. But anyway, 0.77
00:49:04.200 it's just like her whole thing. She's like, this will make things be cool. Like, let's be chill.
00:49:08.720 Like, let's just not have civil war, which again is very much the point of view of Mary in the TV
00:49:14.180 show rain in the france parts they show her and francis really tried to make everything be cool
00:49:18.920 in france between the catholics and francis it didn't work but that's what they wanted and it's
00:49:22.960 just interesting that in history this actually is her point of view she just wanted people to be
00:49:26.640 cool but she was like i don't know 300 years too early to to try and have people like a peaceful
00:49:33.480 coexistent anyway and so she agreed to pardon them and i just put a note here that she was still very
00:49:39.020 ill by the way like she had gotten over that whole like almost dying thing and then the poor
00:49:44.160 fear attack like she she's still like postpartum things are happening she was seen weeping and
00:49:49.020 complaining of a grievous pain in her side so she might have just been like you know i trust these
00:49:53.460 guys like if this is what they say like let's just do it like i can't even i don't have the
00:49:56.940 what is it i don't have the spoons to like yeah yeah think about this and this is where people
00:50:02.800 are like oh mary she was a bad queen she like made this bad decision it's like what what would
00:50:10.560 you have her do i don't think it's that bad of a decision selfishly no i think i think it's fine
00:50:16.100 i'm just saying for instance people like well why did she let those guys back in town it's like well
00:50:20.400 what choice did she have truly like she didn't have her own even the people who were on her side
00:50:25.740 were telling her to do this so it's like if she said no then she would alienate them like she
00:50:29.380 needed someone on her side so anyway jam jam is back in town what is his name like jam from
00:50:35.320 Parks and Recreation. So he is the leader, as you might recall, of the Douglases. A Douglas! A
00:50:40.860 Douglas! A Douglas! And he hated Darnley more than anything for betraying them. Because if you
00:50:48.040 recall, the David Riccio murder, like the Douglases, like there's like 400 people there, like 0.72
00:50:53.220 350 of them were Douglases. And he's the head of the Douglases. And Darnley like truly betrayed 0.90
00:50:58.480 them when he escaped with Mary and made them all lose their lands and titles, right? So JJ or Jam
00:51:04.580 Jam is back on the scene. And he meets up immediately with Scottish Machiavelli and
00:51:08.320 Bothwell. He's like, what's the scheme? What are we scheming? And they're like, okay, the plan is
00:51:13.160 to like, try and get married to divorce Darnley, but maybe also murder Darnley. Those are, we're
00:51:19.600 batting those ideas around. And Jam Jam is like, I'm in whatever the plan is like, fuck Darnley, 0.99
00:51:24.800 let's do it. Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart knew about this plan, by the way, but in his usual way, 0.98
00:51:30.320 he kind of like kept his hands clean because he knew that it would be to his benefit if Darnley
00:51:35.540 was murdered, but he didn't want, in case it went badly, he didn't want his name to be connected to
00:51:40.280 it. So he's just like a slippery guy. I'm a Hollywood icon, Jimmy Stewart. Like he wanted
00:51:44.720 this to happen, but he didn't, and he was involved, but he didn't want anyone. So if there was
00:51:48.580 paperwork, I don't think he signed the paperwork sort of thing. He also notably didn't warn Mary
00:51:53.520 that this was going to happen. So, okay. We're catching up to like the actual murder. Again,
00:52:00.140 this is the second true crime podcast in a row and again i'm going to tell this in order instead
00:52:04.920 of like yeah just so you know who's doing what when like you know who killed darnley right it's
00:52:09.640 like all these guys all these guys i just said there's no mystery here all the guys who said
00:52:14.440 let's get together and kill darnley those are the ones who did it exactly so at this point in time
00:52:18.860 darnley had so he had fallen ill with what some people said was smallpox but which was more than 0.99
00:52:24.680 likely untreated with secondary syphilis. Now he had sores all over his body with like erupting
00:52:32.040 pustules. And here's what I want to say. Syphilis is like not an old timey disease only. People get
00:52:38.800 it today, but there is now antibiotics. So this is why you want to treat your syphilis. So it
00:52:44.740 doesn't turn into pustules all over your body. Right. And if it's left untreated for long enough,
00:52:50.280 it starts to like eat away at parts of your brain and like affect your personality and cognition
00:52:54.960 so old-timey syphilis real real horrible awful terrible disease today much more treatable much 0.99
00:53:02.360 more treatable but also i don't know if the syphilis like darley is a piece of shit horrible 0.97
00:53:05.760 person and i'm not blaming the syphilis for his personality but i'm saying like maybe some of his 0.98
00:53:11.440 like wackier plans to like invade england might that might be syphilis getting in the brain 0.98
00:53:16.820 maybe it could just be him being a dumbass who's to say it's true it's true so anyway so he had 0.98
00:53:21.840 sores all over his body and so at this time what the treatment was was six weeks of mercury baths 0.97
00:53:28.240 god the renaissance was awful he was staying in glasgow at the moment and the reason he was there 0.93
00:53:35.480 is because that's where his kinsmen were like the lennoxists so he felt safer there to be fair 0.79
00:53:42.320 everyone wanted to kill him so he was right yeah so he was in glasgow and where he was like planning
00:53:50.300 a coup against mary by the way because he did want to kidnap the baby and take over mary heard about
00:53:55.140 this because darnley is terrible at keeping secrets so she went to glasgow and he was like
00:54:00.300 no don't look at me my syphilis my handsome face the only thing i had that wasn't annoying
00:54:08.560 it's like in in little women like joe you're one beauty like the only good thing about darnley was 0.60
00:54:15.020 his handsome face and notes you're one redeeming quality yeah so and honestly like she went to
00:54:20.340 glasgow and he was like okay don't see me until after my pustules have cleared up but then one
00:54:24.340 day later he was like okay you can see me but i'll wear a taffeta mask across my face which he did
00:54:28.920 so anyway she was just going there to be like hi can you just like please come back to edinburgh
00:54:33.960 us basically so we can keep an eye on you. Like just, I want you to not be planning a coup against
00:54:40.440 me. So can you just not be here? Like, can you just be closer to me? So she wanted to bring him
00:54:45.540 back there for that reason, but her advisors, Bothwell and Kako the North Jr. wanted him back
00:54:51.240 in Edinburgh because they couldn't assassinate him if he was in Glasgow because his family were
00:54:56.120 around to defend him, right? Like they wanted him in Edinburgh for murder reasons. She wanted him
00:55:00.300 at Edinburgh for just like keep an eye on him reasons so she went and she told him like I know
00:55:04.780 you're planning to kidnap our son and imprison me to take over and he's like actually I'm the victim 0.96
00:55:09.700 he sucks so bad and he's the worst every every everything just like at every turn he does the 0.96
00:55:21.260 worst thing anyway but he was also like I'm not gonna go back to Edinburgh like I know 0.99
00:55:24.900 everyone there wants to kill me so I need to stay in Glasgow where they probably also hate me but
00:55:29.840 they're my family so they probably won't kill me but she really she wanted him there because like
00:55:33.620 she was in this really delicate negotiation with elizabeth like she wanted to make sure like she
00:55:37.620 had to keep darling under post arrest so he didn't do anything stupid until she like got these paper 0.70
00:55:42.740 signed with elizabeth she's babysitting this man just like sit in your room and don't touch anything 0.74
00:55:48.740 while i try and finish this contract and then you can go do whatever you want and then also she was 1.00
00:55:53.540 sort of play acting that they were reconciling as husband and wife because that made her look like a 1.00
00:55:58.760 good stable person that elizabeth would want as her heir to be like look like my marriage is stable
00:56:04.100 i will therefore be a stable monarch also like so she was sort of play acting reconciling with him
00:56:12.100 and then he was still like i don't want to go so finally she was like if you come back to edinburgh 0.97
00:56:16.480 i will let you fuck me this is true and he's like my one desire yeah and he's like okay and she's 0.99
00:56:24.140 like but only after your pustules are healed over and you're no and he's like deal i'll just go hop 1.00
00:56:30.500 in my mercury bath and on wheels and we'll push it to edinburgh yeah so anyway so he's like okay
00:56:38.220 i will i'll come with you back to edinburgh and so they were going she's gonna go back to her usual
00:56:42.600 she was actually staying in hollywood a place that i would have thought it had too much trauma
00:56:46.060 for her to stay in but whatever you know what she's tough it also had nice memories of her
00:56:50.300 time with Davey Rizzio, not just his murder. And the sex stairs. So if they were going there to
00:56:54.980 have sex, the stairs are ready. Oh, that's true that the sex stairs. So she's going to go to 0.98
00:56:58.060 Holyrood, but he was like, I can't go there. No one can see me like this. No one can see me with
00:57:02.840 pustules. So they were planning that he was going to stay at a different castle, also in Edinburgh
00:57:07.820 or near Edinburgh called Craig Miller Castle. But at the last minute, he was like, I feel like I will
00:57:13.120 be murdered if I go there. So at the last, last minute, he was like, I'm going to go somewhere
00:57:17.300 else. And the house that he chose to go to was whimsically called Kirk O'Field. Kirk O'Field
00:57:23.120 really sounds like a Scottish lacrosse player to me. Yeah. It's just quite annoying. It's a cute
00:57:29.840 name. Like Jack O'The Park was the guy who attacked Bothwell. And then Kirk O'Field is the
00:57:34.680 house. So this is also, I just want to clear this up for people who don't know the story. You're
00:57:39.020 like, why are you like hammering this home? But like people who do know the story, I'm just like
00:57:42.240 debunking here. People wanted to murder Darnley. And the people who wanted to murder Darnley
00:57:46.500 thought he was going to be at Craig Miller Castle and that's what they were planning.
00:57:49.940 And that's honestly so good for him for switching. So he switched at the last minute to Kirk O'Field
00:57:54.860 and this was his decision. Some people later said Mary chose that house, but it's like, no,
00:57:58.740 he was like, no, I want to go to somewhere else. But he didn't want to go to Holyrood because
00:58:04.780 people would see his pustules. So he, Kirk O'Field was like near Edinburgh, but like a bit further
00:58:10.200 away. But the thing is like, okay, so Kirk O'Field was a place that had two lodgings in it. There was
00:58:14.660 a mansion, which was owned by Aron Senior, who was in episodes like two and three, quite a lot,
00:58:22.560 but he hasn't been seen since I think the chase about raids. He just went off to France and that's
00:58:27.580 where he's been. And then the other lodging was the old provost's lodging. And so he wanted to
00:58:33.080 stay in the mansion, but they were like, uh, how about the old provost's lodging? So, and it like
00:58:38.200 didn't have any furniture in it. Like they had to like really quickly furnish it. And like, he was
00:58:43.340 like but i need also tapestries and my turkish rugs and this fucking guy he needed the tapestry 0.98
00:58:48.520 to hide his pustules behind so he could whip it out and be like it's me darnley so the old 0.96
00:58:55.920 provost lodging wasn't owned by aaron senior it recently come into the hands of a guy named sir
00:59:00.720 james balfour and who darnley who's darnley's friend darnley thought was his friend so he's
00:59:05.940 like i feel good staying there because balfour owns it like i trust balfour but he didn't know
00:59:11.340 that Balfour was now also on the side of everybody else who wanted to murder him.
00:59:17.240 The entire country of Scotland.
00:59:19.740 Anyway, so it was a last minute plan because the place was sparsely furnished.
00:59:22.880 So on arrest, Rashid, all his stuff moved in.
00:59:25.500 In fact, the tapestries, the six tapestries that were hung up in his bedchamber were ones 0.61
00:59:30.260 that had been confiscated from the house of Cocko the North back in the day.
00:59:34.340 Right before his posthumous trial.
00:59:36.720 Darnley's room.
00:59:37.420 Okay.
00:59:38.040 So Darnley's room is set up on the first floor, by which I mean, there's like the ground floor
00:59:42.280 then the first floor. So it's like, one might call it the second floor. The books I read call
00:59:46.460 it the first floor, which confused me because they're like, well, because they're like Mary's
00:59:51.420 room was one floor below. And I'm like, Mary was in the basement? No. Okay. So Darnley is on
00:59:56.880 quote unquote, the first floor. And he had a bathtub set up right next to his bed so he could
01:00:00.800 have his mercury bath all the time. And there was a room directly below his that was set up for Mary
01:00:05.960 because she would come by and spend the night sometimes.
01:00:08.140 No secret sex stairs, but anyway.
01:00:11.100 And then there was a kitchen in the cellar.
01:00:13.040 So he had a small group of servants with him,
01:00:15.540 various people, I don't know, like five or six men.
01:00:18.120 One of them is called William Taylor.
01:00:19.860 And that's a name I will bring up later.
01:00:21.780 There's all, and they all spent the night.
01:00:23.640 Like they all, I don't know,
01:00:25.040 I guess they had to move beds in, right?
01:00:27.060 Or did they?
01:00:27.540 They just sleep on some chests.
01:00:29.960 R.I.P. Rizzio, sleeping on chests.
01:00:33.020 Yeah, like the bed shortage was such
01:00:34.820 that the bed that was actually they brought a bed for darling he was like this bed isn't good
01:00:38.300 enough which is just like princess and the pea vibes really so then they brought a different
01:00:42.600 bed that actually had been mary's mother's old bed um marie de guise's bed anyway so all the
01:00:47.040 servants stayed in the house in either beds or toppled over bookshelves except for there was a
01:00:54.280 cook whose name is bonkill b-o-n-k-i-l bonkill all right who went home after his duties were done 0.89
01:01:02.220 I'm like, good for you, Bonk Hill.
01:01:04.040 And there was apparently no guards,
01:01:06.420 which was either an oversight or just intentional.
01:01:11.840 Because...
01:01:11.920 I was going to say, if you're so worried
01:01:13.280 that you're going to get murdered,
01:01:14.640 I feel like that would be the first thing you would check.
01:01:16.640 No, all he had was like a cook, some footmen,
01:01:19.000 like that was all he had.
01:01:20.640 Anyway, so he stayed there.
01:01:21.560 So he went to Kirk O'Field.
01:01:22.780 Mary went to visit him every day.
01:01:24.960 Twice she spent the night in her separate room.
01:01:27.880 And they seem to be in okay terms.
01:01:28.960 Because remember, she's like play acting,
01:01:30.360 like we're reconciled.
01:01:30.960 reconciled i'm a stable person to be the heir to the throne of england so they're like playing
01:01:35.560 cards listening to music like other nobles came by to visit at some point mary tried to make peace
01:01:40.800 between darnley and everyone but everyone refused because they hated him and were actively planning
01:01:49.460 his murder but anyway so while mary was just being like we're a happy stable married couple
01:01:54.140 she also had her spies were investigating like what he was up to which was you know some sort
01:01:58.140 of crazy treason plan. By that Friday night, February 7th, rumors were spreading that there
01:02:03.900 was some sort of conspiracy against Darnley in the works and people already started to suspect
01:02:08.040 Bothwell was behind whatever it was. So Sunday, February 9th, it's the last Sunday in Lent and
01:02:15.860 therefore a day of carnival and feasting. And you know, Mary loves a feast. She loves dancing.
01:02:21.200 And so what a coincidence, Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart came to see Mary to be like,
01:02:24.920 oh i have to be out of town today because my wife is very ill after a miscarriage so bye
01:02:30.940 another convenient maybe miscarriage in this story yeah no and like his wife was
01:02:37.720 like if he was like oh no my wife had a miscarriage i have to go be with her like he didn't
01:02:42.800 go be with her so whether she was or not he just was like i just need to be like pointedly not
01:02:47.920 here tonight no reason which is how he just like slips and slides out of blame for everything
01:02:53.980 So anyway, that Sunday morning,
01:02:55.400 Mary attended the marriage of two of her favorite servants.
01:02:57.780 Remember, she loves marriages. 0.97
01:02:59.080 She always buys the bride's dress and she pays for the banquet. 0.60
01:03:02.680 And so the two servants were Bastion Pages, 0.98
01:03:06.100 who was one of her...
01:03:07.120 Incredible.
01:03:07.880 Oh, it's great.
01:03:08.540 Sometimes it's spelled with a Z, Pages.
01:03:10.680 And his wife was Christally Hogg.
01:03:13.100 This is not a James to be seen.
01:03:16.160 Very happy about that.
01:03:17.020 The marriage of Bastion and Christally.
01:03:19.020 bastion pages was also um in the absence of davy rizzio he had taken over doing some of the party
01:03:24.740 planning so he was responsible for the big three-day baptism extravaganza he like helped
01:03:29.700 write the masks and stuff so she attended the wedding um at holly rood in the chapel and then
01:03:35.440 she but she had other things to do but she's like but i'll be back tonight for the dancing which
01:03:39.840 was going to be a masked dance and you know she loves a disguise so so next she went to a house
01:03:45.620 where there was a farewell party was happening for the Duke of Savoy, remember, who had been
01:03:49.880 in town to be the godfather. So she went to that party and she was accompanied by Bothwell, Argyle,
01:03:55.340 Cocker the North Jr. were all there. And they were pre-wearing their masks for the mask party
01:03:59.800 later, which I think is funny that they just wore mask, like fancy dress to a non-fancy dress party
01:04:06.400 because they're like, well, we're just going to fancy dress party after this. So Bothwell's mask
01:04:10.460 was or i don't know if it's his mask or his outfit was black satin fringed with silver
01:04:15.440 so and remember mary had all those colored feathers and things so i'm sure they had amazing
01:04:19.520 outfits so then she left that banquet still in their costumes to go hang out with darley at
01:04:24.740 kirk ofield he was having a yay my pustules are gone party so he had finished his final mercury
01:04:31.200 bath and he was planning to head over to hollywood the next day also present at this party was
01:04:37.000 Scottish Machiavelli. And so they were just hanging out, you know, playing cards and music,
01:04:41.200 dice games. And Mary was like, okay, I have to go back to like the Bastion and Crystalli.
01:04:47.660 I've been wearing this mask all day. I have to go for like the actual mask dance party.
01:04:51.760 And Darnley was like, but then you'll come back and spend the night with me.
01:04:55.980 And Bothwell was like, nope, nope, she can't. No reason. Nope.
01:05:00.820 Don't support that. Can't say why. You know, she's an early start tomorrow.
01:05:04.700 anyway so she was like yeah no i'll go to holly like i'm going to this mass party it's at holly
01:05:09.680 rude where i live so i'll sleep there like whatever and then she's like but don't worry
01:05:13.420 tomorrow when you come to hollywood we can go up the secret sex stairs and then as a token of this 1.00
01:05:17.980 pledge to have sex tomorrow she gave him a ring anyway on her way out she noticed a servant known 0.72
01:05:23.860 as french paris okay was he from france i have to say i doubt it but i love the commitment it's 0.88
01:05:33.380 like oh I'm from I'm French like really what's your name French Paris French Paris so on her
01:05:41.600 way out she saw French Paris who was I think a servant of Bothwell and he was like he looked
01:05:46.120 dirty she was just like Paris how begrimed you are the better to eat you with my dear 0.53
01:05:54.700 and he said nothing but turned very red and in retrospect he was in fact 0.87
01:05:59.780 Covered in gunpowder that he had been putting all over the house.
01:06:05.640 Because nobody involved in this part of the story can keep a secret for a single scene.
01:06:09.520 It's the same as with the Rizio murder.
01:06:11.200 They're all so bad at this.
01:06:13.240 This is horrendous.
01:06:14.880 No, exactly.
01:06:15.880 So it was very cold that night, like February in Edinburgh.
01:06:18.620 So there's a light frosting of snow.
01:06:19.960 It was very dark.
01:06:21.300 The new moon would not appear until 6 a.m.
01:06:24.200 At Kirk O'Field, Darnley went to bed at around midnight.
01:06:27.040 and he ordered his horses to be outside by 5am so he could go to hollywood he was just like i'm 0.87
01:06:31.460 getting fucked tomorrow at 5am okay and then this is like i have to say like asterisks his father 0.91
01:06:40.780 wrote that this is what happened this is what his father imagined happened that night so he said let 0.99
01:06:46.100 us go merrily to bed in singing a song before but he but he declined to accompany his men on the lute
01:06:52.280 saying my hand is not inclined to the loot this night and then together why is lennox making out
01:06:58.640 these what are these details adding to the storyline no but then he said his father said
01:07:04.040 that um then darnley and the pages they all like sang together some like bible song
01:07:09.140 oh i'm sure it was a real real sing-along a real psalm yeah so okay so then he went to bed
01:07:18.620 that's midnight shortly before 2am a woman named mrs barbara merton who lived nearby i'm going to
01:07:25.880 refer later to a drawing but her house is her house is on the drawing barbara merton lived
01:07:30.720 nearby she was awakened by running footsteps she looked out and counted 13 armed men rushing past
01:07:35.880 around the same time some women lodging in another area nearby heard a man's voice crying desperately
01:07:41.120 pity me kinsmen for the love of him who had pity on all the world then silence then
01:07:48.060 a bright flash lit the sky followed by a huge explosion the noise was like nothing anyone had
01:07:54.900 ever heard this is like i hadn't thought about this this way but one of the i think it was
01:07:59.180 one of the books i read was saying that no one had ever used explosives in a non-war situation
01:08:07.600 ever before like to blow up a house was like what like what no one knew what was happening
01:08:16.720 So they're just like, was it a crack of thunder?
01:08:18.700 It sounded like 30 cannons simultaneously firing.
01:08:21.840 No one knew what this was.
01:08:23.120 It was just a weird thing.
01:08:24.920 Everything within a radius of 100 yards or more of Kirk O'Field was covered in a thick layer of dust.
01:08:29.740 And the house itself was just reduced to a pile of rubble.
01:08:33.140 People who slept in the furthermost parts of the town were awakened.
01:08:35.880 Everyone heard this everywhere.
01:08:37.320 It was just a weird thing.
01:08:39.560 And no one knew what it was.
01:08:40.880 So just after the explosion, Mrs. Barbara Merton and her neighbor, Mrs. Mary Sterling,
01:08:46.160 saw 11 men emerge and run up the street two of them in light colored clothing as they passed
01:08:51.260 barbara to her credit called after them traitors you have been at some evil turn and then she
01:08:56.040 grabbed you tell them exactly she grabbed one of them by his silk cloak and asked him what
01:09:00.020 like where did that explosion just happen but he didn't answer and then the men broke up into two
01:09:04.200 groups and ran away members of the night watch remember the night watch from when they came with
01:09:08.660 her torches to see if mary was okay the night watch shows up and the first man they saw time
01:09:15.340 to i don't know i the night watch just feels really wholesome to me in this story they're
01:09:20.460 just like they're just always looking out yeah neighborhood watch anyways the night watch showed
01:09:24.900 up and the first man they saw there was captain william black adder
01:09:30.420 played by rowan atkinson in the long-standing spanish tv show who was one of bothwell's men
01:09:37.560 actually and the night watch were just like okay something weird happened this guy is here
01:09:41.580 and they're like that's suspicious although he was like no i was just like drinking at my friend's
01:09:46.480 house and i came out to see what caused the explosion like all the lucky loos but they're
01:09:51.000 like okay blackadder your name sounds suspicious and you look like rowan atkinson this can't be
01:09:57.620 yeah look at those eyebrows so just everybody started converging on the side of the explosion 0.94
01:10:01.820 like what the fuck just happened like what is happening what was that noise what was that sound 0.78
01:10:05.420 like why is the house rubble now like no one had ever experienced outside of war and even in war 0.98
01:10:11.260 I don't think you exploded things like this.
01:10:13.780 So anyway, they rescued one of Darnley's men who had survived.
01:10:16.620 And they're like, oh my God, people are in this house.
01:10:18.340 And then they start digging in the smoking rubble with their bare hands to see if there's anyone else.
01:10:22.200 Because they knew the king was there.
01:10:23.580 And they're like, where?
01:10:24.740 Oh my God, where's Darnley?
01:10:26.040 So the explosion woke up Mary at Holyrood.
01:10:29.400 Bothwell was also there, maybe.
01:10:34.660 There's kind of asking this.
01:10:35.800 Was Bothwell there when the explosion happened or was he back?
01:10:38.840 It was close.
01:10:39.560 so he could have been at one and then went back to the other thing anyway but conveniently bothwell
01:10:43.600 one of his titles was sheriff of edinburgh and it was his responsibility to investigate any crime
01:10:48.260 committed in the city convenient yeah since he had like organized the whole thing no conflict
01:10:53.820 of interest don't worry about it so allegedly he was found in his bed where he was with his
01:10:58.740 wife jean gordon and they were like oh my god the house of darnley just blew up and he said
01:11:04.120 fie treason and then sent his no not the house of darnley he said startled so he sent his
01:11:11.480 investigators to see what was going on and then he like went back to bed so like i love that he 0.89
01:11:17.560 couldn't even muster the fucks to pretend for a full hour he's just like no i'm done yeah he's
01:11:23.320 like okay someone else will look into that i'm tired now so meanwhile two more dead bodies were
01:11:27.560 unearthed at kirk ophiel two of the other servants so it wasn't until 5 a.m three hours after the
01:11:32.760 explosion that darley's body was discovered in a garden like 40 feet or like away from the house
01:11:40.720 so he was laying dead along with his valet taylor now both were nearly naked wearing just night
01:11:50.300 shirts and no pants darley was stretched out on his back under a pear tree with one hand delicately
01:11:56.540 covering his genitals, while Taylor lay a yard or two away, curled up wearing a night bonnet
01:12:02.620 and one slipper. There were no burns, no marks of strangulation or violence, no fracture wound or
01:12:07.880 bruise on either of them. Next to the bodies lay a chair, a length of rope, a dagger, and Darnley's
01:12:14.300 furry cloak. There's also one backless velvet slipper. So the bodies and the items did not
01:12:20.760 look like they'd been thrown there by the blast, but clearly somebody had laid them out there
01:12:24.300 like that and this just sounds like the opening scene of encyclopedia brown or some sort of brain
01:12:29.800 teaser or like miss marple like it feels like the answer to a game of clue or it was darling
01:12:36.840 under the pear tree with a length of rope and a single slipper like it was really weird so okay
01:12:42.480 so this is what happened but here's what probably happened i pieced together through reading several
01:12:47.940 books that we're all guessing what happened so the thing is the conspirators one of them was
01:12:52.540 like a gunpowder expert and i was like an explosives expert and i was like who's an
01:12:55.860 explosive expert in like 60 whatever but it's like oh this like army guy this like mercenary
01:13:00.680 so the conspirators have put gunpowder well first of all the conspirators have like rolled
01:13:05.580 barrels of gunpowder up the street to kirko field and those were bothwell's servants and people saw
01:13:11.260 them doing it probably where they got covered in gunpowder ahead of time yeah paris you are
01:13:16.400 besmirched so the conspirators had put gunpowder all through the downstairs of the house like
01:13:20.820 packing it into the foundation of the house and things like that. Because they were planning to
01:13:25.240 blow up the house with Darnley in it. John Hepburn, who is one of Bothwell's kinsmen,
01:13:31.000 watched the house after Mary left. Because remember, they didn't want to kill her. They
01:13:34.280 just want to kill Darnley. So they waited for her to leave and then waited until the candles 0.82
01:13:38.120 were snuffed out. And then he lit the slow fuse. So there are people outside as well,
01:13:42.940 lurking around in case Darnley escaped to make sure that he would die in some other way if
01:13:46.940 necessary but darnley was awakened or he had been awakened when he heard armed men around the house
01:13:52.880 the the backup guys and so also i don't know if it's john hepburn or somebody else like went through
01:13:57.360 and like locked all the doors so he darnley couldn't escape through any of the doors
01:14:00.400 so guessing they were there to kill him correctly he used his chair and the rope to sneak out a
01:14:05.460 window first putting on his cloak and grabbing his dagger this is where i feel like i'm solving
01:14:09.360 the brain teaser right not grabbing his pants apparently that was no no no you know what this
01:14:16.380 is not this darling is not a pants on type person so um once outside a guy named kerr of hoddenside
01:14:24.780 who was the man recently pardoned who had held the pistol to mary's belly during the rizzio murder
01:14:29.840 was waiting with a gang of others loyal to bothwell they were waiting in what's called
01:14:34.280 thieves alley which is like of course that's also in the drawing we're going to talk about
01:14:39.580 the drawing in a minute so darling tried to reason with them father would later claim darling recited
01:14:44.200 a whole paragraph of bible verses okay sure did Darnley know I bet what he actually recited was 0.99
01:14:51.620 oh fuck please don't kill me that's probably the extent of it I'm really the victim I knew it 0.99
01:14:56.960 anyway so then they probably strangled him with his own night shirt and then put it back on him 1.00
01:15:03.600 I'm not sure or with the rope I don't know anyway and then so this is like the house had not yet
01:15:09.140 blown out, blown up yet, right? So they dragged him over to the nearest garden, but they couldn't
01:15:15.320 bring him any closer to the house because they knew the house was able to explode and they had
01:15:18.060 to get out of the way. So that's why he was in this garden kind of nearby. So the whole thing
01:15:23.740 where the women had heard somebody say, oh, my kinsmen have mercy on me, indicates that it was
01:15:29.680 a Douglas, a Douglas. To their credit, I don't think they yelled that while they were killing him.
01:15:36.120 They might have. I would not be surprised if they had. Anyway, the women who saw all this stuff were
01:15:42.580 later brought in for questioning, but then their testimony was suppressed because guess what? The
01:15:45.960 people investigating this were also the murderers and they didn't want evidence. Right. The sheriff
01:15:50.340 thought well, was like, maybe don't want you guys to testify. But you know what? I appreciate these
01:15:54.720 women stepping forward and saying this evidence because I'm sure there was a lot of intimidation
01:15:59.120 of people to not step forward. Anyway, so Mary was informed that he was dead and grieved she
01:16:04.680 remain in her chamber all day remember she's still dealing with like various health issues
01:16:08.980 including mental health issues sure i do feel like in grief might be a little bit of an overstatement 0.87
01:16:15.640 for why she was staying in her yeah yeah given given the circuit well in grief for the fact
01:16:20.160 that she knew that this fucked up her deal with elizabeth yeah that's true so bothwell
01:16:24.200 was also informed darnley's dead and he later wrote i was very distressed at the news as were 0.74
01:16:28.920 many others. Like hardly even trying to lie. He's not. Yes, I was upset and surprised. No,
01:16:38.460 as as anyone would be. So anyway, some people went to comfort Mary. Those people were Bothwell,
01:16:45.760 Cocker the North Jr., Scottish Machiavelli. I feel like the least comforting people in the world.
01:16:50.320 But Mary's half sister, Jean, the one who saved the candle that other time, they went to comfort
01:16:54.560 her mary apparently called herself one of the most unfortunate queens in the world and i would
01:17:01.040 say yes true but yeah so she was emotionally shattered and she was also pretty sure because
01:17:06.280 remember she had been there last night so she was like oh my god like if i hadn't come back here to
01:17:10.460 go to that mask party i would have been killed she's like this they were clearly trying to kill 0.75
01:17:14.240 me also a reasonable assumption a reasonable assumption yeah yeah and so she's like the 0.77
01:17:21.080 whole thing about like monarchy is like you know god chose us or whatever and she's just like you
01:17:25.100 know what i could have stayed there but i decided to go to the party that was god that was god saving 0.99
01:17:28.620 me but she's upset because this is an upsetting situation like darling was a piece of shit but 0.99
01:17:33.340 this is still distressing and she thought that she had narrowly escaped being assassinated 0.99
01:17:38.160 which would upset anybody exactly so mary commanded she's like we need to get to the
01:17:43.380 bottom of this so bothwell got a company of soldiers to search the area for those responsible
01:17:47.920 I'm putting finger quotes up. Let's investigate this, said Bothwell.
01:17:54.020 Is the murderer in the room with us right now?
01:17:57.840 There's an episode of Columbo that's just like this, where this guy kills somebody. He's a private detective.
01:18:03.060 And then, like, he kills this guy's wife, and he's a private detective.
01:18:06.980 And then the guy whose wife was killed hires a private detective to solve the murder, and he's working with Columbo.
01:18:13.580 It's just like that.
01:18:14.580 Anyway, so William Cecil, on top of everything, he already had agents on the scene.
01:18:21.600 And one of his agents is who, in fact, drew a picture that I would like for you to describe, Alison.
01:18:26.820 It is a delightful, hand-drawn map of Kirkfield allegedly showing exactly what happened during and after the murder of Darnley.
01:18:39.240 And it is truly a thing to behold.
01:18:42.180 i have to assume and we'll be sharing this on the book i'll put this on instagram for sure but also
01:18:46.720 um i there's so much happening in this picture it's a bit of a where's waldo like picture
01:18:51.860 but the fact that it's showing kind of like a movie what happened before during and after
01:18:57.700 so you've got a picture of like darnley's body laid out dead in his nightshirt the size of a tree
01:19:04.340 he is enormous there is a little tasteful smudge of ink where his privates should be
01:19:10.800 which is really very very thoughtful but then there's also in another part of the picture
01:19:14.480 there's some men carrying what is the dead body of darnley so it's like the picture shows it's
01:19:19.660 not this is not a snapshot in time of everything happening at once it's it's it's a bit of a comic
01:19:24.940 strip of like here's what happened in the top left top left i think is darnley sitting in bed
01:19:32.020 yelling something no like god revenge me no in the top left what is baby bj
01:19:38.280 that is pictured in bed praying and his mouth is saying judge and avenge my cause oh lord
01:19:45.160 baby bj at this point was what like seven months old he's like not a year old yeah yeah okay but
01:19:52.880 much like his father he likes just quoting long bible verses yeah there's also numerous trees
01:19:57.460 you can also see in the picture there's the um the men lurking in what is thieves alley so that
01:20:04.740 kind of gives you an idea of where those guys are standing so like this guy William Cecil's guy
01:20:09.140 instead of writing out what happened he drew it and it you imagine him sitting at the scene here
01:20:16.580 like taking testimony from witnesses and he's like okay so there's a guy in the alley and then he
01:20:21.260 found the body under the tree and he's like okay I could write that down in words but somebody get
01:20:25.420 me my colored pencils I have to create a montage is I wish all evidence was taken it's truly it's
01:20:33.800 a montage in a single image it's amazing like at first i had assumed that it was a picture of
01:20:41.180 a snapshot in time but it's much more interesting than that it's yeah anyway it's a wild image
01:20:48.700 yeah and i will for sure put that on instagram anyway that was sent to cecil and he filed that
01:20:55.420 away he's like well put this in my drawer of like this guy's weird testimony let me not ask this guy
01:21:02.180 to take the reports anymore so mary ordered a period of mourning you know remember when her
01:21:08.360 first husband died it's like 40 days like we need to like cover the windows everything needs to be
01:21:13.460 black on black on black she ordered more black fabric for a new like for dressings for the chapel
01:21:18.800 and for herself and to cover the windows so it was the whole thing about like when francis had
01:21:23.900 died in france when she was a teen her first husband anyway when she's a teen widow the first
01:21:28.120 time she went and then stayed in a like not 24 hours a day but like the room the windows were
01:21:33.860 covered in black date black drapery and she just stayed in seclusion so Bothwell was like here's
01:21:40.120 what I've figured out from my investigation I think there's some sort of weird thunder and
01:21:44.120 lightning storm and a house burned down from that and Darnley was thrown from the house by the
01:21:51.040 under is my conclusion as your sheriff i do love i mean yeah that's quite a quite a story that he
01:22:01.060 probably thought about for 30 well and here's the thing it's like you planned this murder
01:22:05.060 what were you going to say happened why didn't you think of that before he stopped thinking
01:22:11.160 after the gunpowder and everything else was just it's just anyway so there was a post-mortem
01:22:17.980 examination done. So they found Darnley had a broken rib, probably sustained when he like
01:22:22.000 jumped out of the window or climbed over the wall to get into the garden. He had some internal
01:22:26.720 injuries, but allegedly no evidence of asphyxia or strangulation. But like most people seem to
01:22:32.300 agree he was strangled. So anyway, just not bruises. I don't know. His body was briefly
01:22:38.200 put on public display and a cue formed to view it different from the cue that formed to view
01:22:43.060 the body of elizabeth ii because this was did they put pants on him i don't know he had just
01:22:49.220 had an autopsy done on him a like renaissance autopsy like what were they seeing i don't know
01:22:55.180 i feel like that cue might also be in the drawing but i'm not sure so then okay so remember the
01:23:01.920 conspirators were everybody including the entire privy council so they had a meeting like okay how
01:23:08.800 can we make ourselves the murderers look innocent like again my guys think of that before like the
01:23:17.400 worst conspirators are so bad like even scottish machiavelli like not worthy of the name scottish
01:23:23.780 machiavelli like no one thought before anyway so they wrote a letter uh which is the first
01:23:30.840 description of the crime and they to send to catherine de medici not i don't know people
01:23:35.380 keep sending her letters in this case it's because her envoy happened to be in town so
01:23:38.600 they're like, okay, well, that's, we'll send that letter to her. Cause I guess he's here.
01:23:41.940 So two days after the murder, Mary emerged from her morning room to one of her other favorite
01:23:48.660 servants was getting married in the chapel Royal at Holyrood. She'd already paid for the,
01:23:53.500 for the bra. Okay. So brides didn't used to always wear white is a pet peeve of mine in general, 0.68
01:23:59.660 because in movies, they always like, we have an expectation now that brides wear white. So
01:24:03.860 no matter what time period it is, like often movies will put brides wearing white.
01:24:06.960 the exception i have for that is mary queen of scots did in fact wear white to her wedding
01:24:11.720 which was weird because white was the color of mourning but she was like it looks good against
01:24:17.100 my skin so i'm gonna wear white and that was weird so she bought the fabric for the wedding
01:24:23.140 dress for this bride which was black satin and velvet oh drama goth bride yeah anyway so she went
01:24:31.820 to um attend this wedding and some people she'd also paid for the banquet and some people
01:24:36.580 like john knox were scandalized that she left her mourning to attend this wedding i would say
01:24:42.320 the wedding was happening in the same castle she lived in so she didn't really go and she just
01:24:48.660 kind of went down the stairs and she didn't go to the banquet afterwards anyway but some people
01:24:52.320 were like this shows that she wasn't mourning really so if any i mean i wouldn't if it was me
01:25:00.340 I don't know.
01:25:01.020 But you know, the thing of how people,
01:25:02.840 it's, people wanted to think the worst of her all the time,
01:25:06.120 but also like people mourn in different ways.
01:25:08.420 But they were like, oh, you know how people say like,
01:25:10.220 oh, she doesn't seem upset by this.
01:25:11.880 That must mean she's not upset.
01:25:13.140 Or it's like, no, some people just hide their emotions.
01:25:15.240 She's also just like walking in a fugue state.
01:25:17.580 She's like, I guess we'll go to this wedding now.
01:25:19.080 Like, what do I do?
01:25:19.740 Like, anyway, this was later used as evidence to be like,
01:25:22.980 she must have been behind Darnley's murder,
01:25:26.280 even though it ruined her deal with Elizabeth and everything.
01:25:29.340 anyway later that day she switched over to she took baby bj um over to edinburgh castle because
01:25:36.680 there's better security there and then she returned to her secluded room and in her absence
01:25:43.020 like she's just checked out is the sense i have of things like and yeah this is two days after
01:25:49.940 this weird thing happened yeah you're in shock what are you gonna exactly so she's just like not
01:25:55.000 fit to do anything, frankly. So in her absence, Bothwell kind of took control of the government
01:26:00.820 and acted sort of in charge because somebody had to. And she trusted him. She didn't know he was
01:26:05.940 the murderer. So this is where the investigators slash cover-up team brought in witnesses. This
01:26:10.360 is where the women were brought in. And they were like, oh, these silly women didn't see anything. 1.00
01:26:15.700 None of us. They didn't see us going there or our servants or grab any of us by our cloaks. 0.99
01:26:20.480 Nothing like that. But Mary, even at this point, she's just like, why are the investigators not
01:26:24.980 finding who the murderer is like why is this so complicated it's like what's going on and they're
01:26:29.800 like well it's it's complicated you know so she offered a reward and a free pardon to anyone who
01:26:35.880 could identify their murderers this is all happening day by day so he the murder was like
01:26:40.280 overnight on the 9th by the 15th darling was buried in the royal vault of james the fifth in
01:26:45.420 the chapel royal of hollywood next to his father next to her father sorry the previous king of
01:26:50.260 Scots. And then because clothes were expensive in this time and Darnley had nice clothes,
01:26:57.040 like his clothes are left behind. It's like, well, who are you going to give them to? Like
01:26:59.680 they're not going to have like Darnley Memorial Closet Museum. And so Mary decided to give the
01:27:06.160 clothes to Bothwell because she trusted him and a tailor recut them to fit him because Bothwell,
01:27:12.320 not a long lad. So anyway, so note, it was an extraordinary shock to everybody. Like notably,
01:27:19.620 the crown to all the other kings and queens in all of Europe to learn about this thing.
01:27:23.740 Like, not just like a king, because Darnley was the king of Scotland. Not just a king had been
01:27:27.360 killed, but he'd been killed in this new technologically advanced way. Like, no one had
01:27:33.200 ever heard of gunpowder being used like this before. This was weird and unusual.
01:27:38.340 One more thing for every monarch in Europe to be afraid of is now somebody might blow up my house.
01:27:42.020 No, exactly. So, um, Mary not doing well. We know that her health is already not great. And this is 0.99
01:27:50.560 obviously very startling to her. So her health already not great. She's, she's still like just
01:27:55.540 fairly recently postpartum. She almost recently died from the gastric ulcer and her doctors were
01:28:01.520 like, maybe being shut up all day in a dark room is not like in the castle where her best friend
01:28:06.800 was murdered in front of her is not great for her. So like, let's move her elsewhere. So she
01:28:11.740 went to a place called Seton like a mansion or something there she brought along with her some
01:28:17.540 of her advisors Scottish Machiavelli was one of them she left BJ in the care of Bothwell and
01:28:24.140 Cocker the North Jr and she just went to this other house to just like be sick there right like
01:28:29.580 to continue her mourning like we know that she got black cloth like she covered the windows there but
01:28:33.380 she was able to just be away from this and just like walk the grounds and anyway Mary later Mary's
01:28:41.560 enemies made up stories about how she went there and she was just like partying all the time
01:28:45.600 but frankly like she just fresh air was good for her a change of scenery was good for her 0.58
01:28:51.040 like for her like horse riding was useful like she did do things but she wasn't like
01:28:56.220 partying but also right because when you're depressed and in shock what you don't want
01:29:01.420 to be doing is sitting alone silently in darkened room in the house where everything went wrong like
01:29:05.700 get outside take a walk like get a drink of water you'll be exactly and like grief works differently
01:29:10.160 for different people, but people really wanted to judge her. They really wanted to think that
01:29:14.080 she was responsible for this. So they were really thinking like, she is happy about this. She helped
01:29:19.320 organize this. Also this, this trip that she took is the single one entry we have about her playing
01:29:25.660 golf, which was really interesting to me because I thought going into this, it's like, I knew that
01:29:30.480 she like brought golf over from France and stuff. And I think she played various sports, but the
01:29:34.820 only time that it was mentioned specifically, she played golf was a guy who later criticized her
01:29:38.700 saying like she went to this house and she's playing like sports that women shouldn't play
01:29:43.600 like golf and that's the only time that the word golf is mentioned by anyone about her ever
01:29:49.200 anyway so everyone knew that she was not doing well really people who knew her like even elizabeth
01:29:55.380 someone was like oh she's at this house and she's just like goofing off and elizabeth is like no
01:30:00.040 she's not like i've never met her and i know that's not true like i know that she's like
01:30:03.980 convalescing from various illnesses and grieving like even elizabeth knew that so then we get into
01:30:09.900 some real pamphlet shenanigans okay a poster so february 16th again his murder was the 9th by the
01:30:16.960 16th a poster was found on the toll booth i'm not sure what that is in enborough and the this poster
01:30:24.280 claimed the assassins were bothwell balfour and two other guys i mean two other is the only part
01:30:31.420 there that's not quite accurate like and 200 others yeah well no and the two i didn't list
01:30:36.980 the two other guys names because they were just kind of like they don't really come up they're
01:30:40.200 not really anyway just two other guys and so by this point also lennox darnley's dad had been told
01:30:46.780 about the murder but it wasn't until now like several days later that darnley's mother was
01:30:52.040 told about it if you might recall she's been in jail in england ever since lennox went to scotland
01:30:57.940 in the first place two years ago because she's being held hostage because Elizabeth thought if
01:31:01.840 Margaret Douglas was in jail, then Lennox and Darnley wouldn't secretly arrange a marriage to
01:31:06.020 marry, which they did. So Margaret Douglas has been in jail this whole time. And at first there
01:31:09.920 was a misunderstanding. People thought that Lennox had also been killed. So Margaret Douglas freaked
01:31:13.780 out thinking her son and her husband were both dead, but then she found out it was just her son,
01:31:18.880 but she's still really upset. And so much so that Elizabeth actually freed her from jail.
01:31:22.940 And immediately, Margaret Douglas began stirring up shit, blaming Mary for the murder, saying that this was Mary's revenge for Darnley's role in the murder of Davy Rizzio. 0.98
01:31:32.080 She was also mad Mary had not had Darnley buried with a pageantry of a state funeral as befit the king. 0.99
01:31:38.400 So she's really blaming Mary.
01:31:39.560 So she's riding that heart.
01:31:41.280 Meanwhile, her husband Lennox and his kinfolk are starting to really lean into the like Bothwell of it all.
01:31:49.100 So Elizabeth wrote a letter to Mary telling her, like, you need to find these murderers.
01:31:54.160 Like, people are saying you're involved.
01:31:56.140 So, like, you need to, like, find the murderers and punish them to, like, free your own reputation.
01:32:00.440 Catherine de' Medici wrote a similar letter saying, like, you know, to her credit, Catherine was like, it's good Dernley is dead because he was awful.
01:32:09.880 But you need to find and prosecute the killers quickly to proclaim your own innocence in the eyes of your subjects.
01:32:15.080 because the normal people love Mary
01:32:17.340 and that's like her big power here, right?
01:32:19.680 And people are starting to doubt her. 1.00
01:32:20.640 All of the schemiest queens in Europe are like, 0.89
01:32:22.740 listen, you gotta find these people or it's all good.
01:32:25.440 Exactly, and Mary's like, I'm trying.
01:32:28.240 But the investigators-
01:32:29.820 I've put my best sheriff on the case.
01:32:32.400 The investigators keep saying they can't find any evidence.
01:32:36.320 Columbo's not here.
01:32:37.320 There's no one she can ask.
01:32:40.100 So she's doing what she can, my friends.
01:32:43.120 um who can she like what is she what can she do anyway so the night of february 26th another
01:32:51.760 poster went up um this one had a picture so it had mary's initials and also bothwell's initials
01:32:57.520 and the image of a mallet i don't know exactly what that symbolism is but bothwell lost his
01:33:02.900 mind at this he said someone tell me who made these posters because i will wash my hands with
01:33:07.760 his blood so not a way to convince people you're not a murderer is to yeah say that every night
01:33:14.260 posters went up just night postering was happening and so one of them said how so both will remember
01:33:20.160 he had married cock of the north sister jean gordon and jean gordon was currently very ill
01:33:24.620 and this poster suggested that's because bothwell was poisoning her um because he wanted to marry
01:33:29.280 mary the queen so mary is just like in her like she's clearly emerging from her like extreme
01:33:36.980 shock fugue state and she's just like okay i need i need someone to advise me here so she tried to
01:33:44.140 get hollywood icon jimmy stewart back in town but he was busy scheming so he had started a new
01:33:49.960 protestant slash catholic coalition one of his his co-conspirators and this was jam jam and this
01:33:56.100 group was working really hard to frame bothwell for the murder that they had all also been involved
01:34:00.000 in so anyway night posturing kept continuing like pictures of bothwell like his face and it said
01:34:06.320 slogans like here is the murderer of the king we love a clever slogan it's straightforward
01:34:15.300 to the point and at this point a ghostly figure prowled edinburgh's streets calling out that
01:34:20.680 bothwell had murdered the king so like i love both explanations for what could have happened here
01:34:26.900 which is that a maybe ghosts are real i don't know maybe darnley was waiting for himself to be
01:34:33.420 bench or maybe one of those ladies who saw all of the people coming in and out of the house like
01:34:39.740 put a sheet on and started like waving their arms around like oh i bet it was both well
01:34:44.860 like both of them are incredibly this is amazing i love a ghostly figure prowling the streets
01:34:49.600 so basically everybody was just like everyone is very susceptible right it's it's giving like
01:34:55.460 mid-2000s facebook conspiracy theories like someone's like well i heard it was both well
01:34:59.960 it was both well and suddenly everyone's like it was both well like everyone just like it's like
01:35:03.820 except in this case it actually was yeah exactly but it's just like that cascading where it's just
01:35:08.560 like everyone is so convinced of something it's like someone's like well i did see bothwell's
01:35:13.800 servants rolling barrels of gunpowder towards kirk o field a true thing that happened he did
01:35:18.480 try to blame it on a crack of thunder yeah which seemed true bothwell's just like well it's just
01:35:23.300 you know a weird crack of thunder i know it didn't rain and it's february but thunder so
01:35:29.520 the single-minded focus just on Bothwell, like, is evidence that it was just like a group dedicated
01:35:35.740 to bringing down Bothwell was behind this. And that was the group I just said, Hollywood.com,
01:35:39.980 Jimmy Stewart, Jam Jam. Like they just needed a fall, like they needed a fall guy and Bothwell
01:35:44.280 was the fall guy. They probably also wanted to drag Mary down as well because she was so 0.98
01:35:48.480 connected with Bothwell because he was, had been her trusted advisor for so long.
01:35:51.860 So Mary couldn't stop his runaway train. The more she tried to suppress the posters and rumors,
01:35:55.820 the more people believed them to be true
01:35:57.500 and the more they thought that made her look guilty.
01:36:00.680 So anyway, so she's just like, oh my God,
01:36:03.660 like, can you guys find the killers, please?
01:36:06.060 Like, this is getting really bad.
01:36:07.140 And they're like, actually, our priority right now
01:36:09.300 is finding out who is making the posters.
01:36:12.300 And again, they are the ones making the posters.
01:36:16.320 Amazing.
01:36:17.160 Like, again, we know what happened.
01:36:18.580 Mary didn't know what happened.
01:36:19.720 And she firmly believed the explosion
01:36:21.000 had been meant to murder her as well.
01:36:22.500 Because of course she would think that,
01:36:24.140 like, that makes sense.
01:36:25.820 She thinks she only narrowly escaped by like not spending the night there.
01:36:28.900 And so she thought this was meant to kill her and Darnley.
01:36:32.380 And she's like, I know Bothwell is loyal to me.
01:36:35.280 Ergo, Bothwell can't be behind this because he would never murder me.
01:36:39.020 And that's like her train of thought.
01:36:41.280 And Bothwell was like, I'm kind of running out of money.
01:36:44.700 So can you give me some more titles that come with more money so I can have more money?
01:36:50.420 And she's like, okay. 0.96
01:36:51.660 And this was disastrous timing because it just looked like she was backing the prime suspect in the murder.
01:36:57.780 And then the next night, I got Alison to bring this image up and we're about to get into it.
01:37:01.560 The most infamous poster went up.
01:37:03.780 A sketch of it made at the time still exists and is kept in the National Archive in London.
01:37:08.420 Alison, can you describe this is the mermaid poster?
01:37:11.260 Okay, I will try.
01:37:12.560 I have never seen this image before.
01:37:14.740 It's amazing.
01:37:16.200 So at the top of this poster is a bench. 0.65
01:37:19.980 And on top of the bench is a topless mermaid, tits out in the air, holding a scroll in one hand and what looks like a Venus flytrap in the other.
01:37:30.660 It's got MR next to it, Mary's initials. 0.97
01:37:34.340 And then underneath the mermaid is what I think is a goat surrounded by three circles and a shit ton of swords.
01:37:44.540 And I don't know what any of this is supposed to be.
01:37:46.960 but apparently everybody this was the most provocative poster anyone made and apparently
01:37:53.240 everyone in edinburgh knew immediately what it all meant so i'll explain okay please because
01:37:59.180 this is quite quite a look i don't know if everyone in edinburgh actually understood what
01:38:03.340 it meant i think they get i think you get it's like it's saying something bad about mary right 0.98
01:38:07.440 like i assume she is the tits out mermaid doing something slutty and bad yeah i got that okay 0.97
01:38:12.500 so it depicts a bare-breasted mermaid wearing a crown she is waving what is maybe a sea anemone 0.98
01:38:18.760 or maybe a feathered lure used in falconry either way like a sea anemone is a symbol for female
01:38:26.940 genitalia and the feather lure used in falconry anyway it's it insinuates seduction whatever
01:38:32.860 she's waving around written alongside the mermaid are the initials mr which stands for like maria 0.63
01:38:39.080 regina like mary the queen below the mermaid is accroaching hair so like a rabbit okay not ago
01:38:46.040 yeah enclosed by three circles the outer circle has 17 daggers around its rim above the hair are
01:38:51.940 the initials jh for james hepburn bothwell's name so okay here's what this is from one of the books
01:38:59.300 so the image preserves the public conjoining of mary and bothwell in an accusation of adultery
01:39:04.000 for even those with a minimal grasp of the meaning of the symbols its message would have been clear
01:39:08.020 but it's in case it's not so i'll explain further the hair is a device on bothwell's
01:39:15.980 coat of arms so it's like one of the heraldic images of like the hepburn family i guess
01:39:19.500 so like that indicates him he's the hair but it also symbolized fear and its portrayal was
01:39:25.220 intended as a threat a mermaid was a familiar symbol denoting temptation but the mermaid in
01:39:30.500 this image has a forked tail denoting prostitution the circle of daggers like the explanations are
01:39:37.520 getting more and more niche like this was written by somebody who just like you know went to
01:39:42.800 university read the really weird books and assumes everyone knows all the things they know
01:39:46.620 level symbolism okay so the circle of daggers has a very niche explanation it's paired
01:39:52.960 in okay so there's this obscure book that show that's just kind of like here's what images and
01:39:58.880 what they mean in like ancient rome or something so it's like this book shows the circle of daggers
01:40:05.740 and in this book the circle of daggers is next to the motto the sword shall destroy them from
01:40:11.240 without and terror within so this is assuming other people have read that book and know that
01:40:15.720 the circle of daggers in this other book has that quote next to it the 17 the number of 17 daggers
01:40:21.980 may come from an ancient roman text explaining that's an unlucky number so okay which i'm sure
01:40:28.020 everyone someone just really overthought this but also it's interesting and maybe a coincidence and
01:40:34.460 maybe not. Somebody knew that in that will that Mary wrote when she thought she's going to die
01:40:38.900 in childbirth, she bequeathed Bothwell a jeweled mermaid. So it might be someone who knew mermaid
01:40:45.380 was like their secret shared thing. Ultimately, this poster is just being like, Mary is a slut. 1.00
01:40:51.860 She and Bothwell are having an affair and they killed Darnley together. So I just find it 1.00
01:40:56.780 interesting that this, this poster was like the worst one. This is like the one that made Mary 1.00
01:41:02.480 panic like this this poster of this mermaid and daggers anyway so mary acted quickly um because
01:41:10.700 she's like this poster is the worst thing that's ever happened to me so she convened a gathering
01:41:14.660 of the city's painters and writers to be like whose art style is this whose handwriting is this
01:41:20.960 like to try and figure out who did it suspicion suspicion fell on this one guy but he fled before
01:41:26.140 he could be arrested so then she had she passed an act in parliament saying anyone who's found
01:41:30.640 putting up posters. Slanderous material would face prosecution and execution. But the damage
01:41:37.300 had been done. So the poster campaign had really made everybody suspect Bothwell, but also her.
01:41:43.900 And just as a coda, because we're wrapping up this part of the story. So the crisis at this
01:41:49.720 point was so extreme that Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart couldn't avoid town anymore. So he came
01:41:56.120 back to town. And just to recap, Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart, if we think back to all the major
01:42:01.980 crises that have happened during Mary's reign, the cock of the North scenario, the chase about raids,
01:42:08.400 the murder of Davey Rizzio, the murder of Darnley, it all happened because of him,
01:42:15.580 basically. And because he wanted more power and to eliminate his enemies. So it made sense that
01:42:24.780 he was that Bothwell was the fall guy because Bothwell had taken up more power in the absence
01:42:30.320 of Davey Rizzio and Darnley, like Bothwell. So of course, that's the next guy Hollywood
01:42:34.920 and Jimmy Stewart wanted to take down. And Mary just kept refusing to proceed against, 1.00
01:42:40.580 everyone was like, you need to put Bothwell on trial for this. And she's like, how can I do that?
01:42:45.180 He's the sheriff. But the more she protected him, like she felt absolutely sure, like everyone
01:42:50.860 around her was constantly betraying her, but she was like, this guy has had my back. Like,
01:42:54.160 I'm not going to turn on him. But the more she supported him, the more the public, which had
01:42:58.640 always been this thing that supported her, turned against her. And so potentially in like a William
01:43:04.720 Cecil long-term planning way, maybe that's part of what Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart had wanted
01:43:09.480 all along to make the murder look so weirdly suspicious and point the finger at Bothwell to
01:43:16.760 bring him and her down so i'm gonna leave us on suspense for now but next week we will continue
01:43:25.700 what happens next elson do you have any any thoughts about anything the posters
01:43:31.600 any anything about the murder i just my favorite part of this entire story is how
01:43:40.380 completely unprofessional and bad at schemes everyone involved in it is i just like when
01:43:47.660 you describe this in just a couple of words where like the king of scotland was assassinated by a
01:43:53.620 group of his like advisors on the privy council and like it sounds very um game of thronesy like
01:44:01.540 they had planned this out 45 steps in advance and i just love getting under the hood here and
01:44:06.760 watching just oh no it's really dumb and after that we were putting up a bunch of political
01:44:13.680 cartoons in the town square and everyone was like chasing each other around and maybe there was like
01:44:18.280 a ghost impersonator happening it's just yeah i don't know i think it's also like the number
01:44:24.200 of conspirators both in the rizzio murder and in this one it's like you know the bigger a committee
01:44:29.280 is the messier your like annual report becomes so i think it's just so many people were involved
01:44:35.260 in this like of course because someone is like we should blow up the house yes and we should also
01:44:39.940 strangle him also like it's too many people they really yes and did their way out of a good murder
01:44:46.520 here yeah there's too many cooks it's way too complicated it's and that's the thing it's like
01:44:52.120 who could outsmart people this bad at scheming like personally this might be me being a mary
01:45:00.460 fangirl that's very possible but i think the reason that she's like it's very easy from our
01:45:07.860 perspective now to be like mary oh my god look look at what's happening how can you not see that
01:45:12.840 it was him why are you still believing in these people she's a good schemer yeah she's like she
01:45:19.360 thinks it's an attack on her because she's thinking three four steps ahead she can't 0.99
01:45:24.200 imagine that it's actually this stupid yeah right it's the it's the benoit blanc glass onion 1.00
01:45:29.960 yeah you're thinking way too hard she's like no it's got to be somebody else that would be stupid 1.00
01:45:36.120 like no no no honey that's actually what's happening everyone around you was a moron 1.00
01:45:41.120 yeah yeah it's it's just such a weird cavalcade of events and this is where like the first 0.96
01:45:46.300 even of this podcast it's like okay this episode takes place over the course of two years
01:45:50.600 and this one is like over the course of like one month everything yeah like just devolves into
01:45:58.680 chaos and next week similar but no spoilers for people who don't know this story yet so um allison
01:46:06.560 thank you again for joining me to talk about the weird demise of a man who you hated it's a great
01:46:12.500 catharsis episode for me now that now the darnley is gone i assume none of your listeners will miss
01:46:17.180 him he was just like he came in like a wrecking ball in a bad way just yeah just everything was 0.96
01:46:25.860 really fucked up and bad and he just kind of like made it all worse and then he died and he he was 0.90
01:46:32.560 the problem at every moment of his life he was and he was like 21 and one of the things i read 0.99
01:46:37.820 as well said like like the level of syphilis like the advancedness of how the again if you have
01:46:43.020 syphilis see a doctor get antibiotics very treatable nowadays but the level of syphilis
01:46:49.360 that he had like the mercury bath maybe helped get rid of his pustules but like he was probably
01:46:53.720 gonna die within the next year anyway so all of this could have been avoided but also that's what
01:46:59.760 i was thinking about it's like if you're like this group of 500 people who are like we're gonna kill 0.90
01:47:04.120 darnley it's like oh he's really sick and convalescing let's poison him this is not the 0.95
01:47:11.680 easiest way to do it is to fill the basement of an entire house with gunpowder you were already
01:47:16.780 in the house to lock all the doors you could have just walked into the room he had no guards and
01:47:21.500 that's that's the thing too that's where i feel like like the committee of it all it's like this
01:47:26.140 guy came in this mercenary explosive expert so i feel like they're all like great we're gonna kill 0.99
01:47:29.660 darnley and then someone's like hey i just met this guy at the pub he says you can do this shit 0.98
01:47:34.340 with gunpowder they're like yes that's great bro yeah let's use gunpowder too it's like they only 0.99
01:47:39.600 use that because that one guy came in who's like oh you know if you put gunpowder in a house you
01:47:43.020 can blow up a house and i was like can you amazing let's do it yeah okay so allison please let
01:47:50.120 everybody know about your books and how people can follow you and things like that. Sure. So I'm
01:47:56.200 the author of two historical fiction novels, one out and available for purchase right now called
01:48:01.380 A Tip for the Hangman. It was a historical thriller set in the Mary Queen of Scots era.
01:48:06.100 There is- Second one is- Oh no, I just want to say,
01:48:08.720 like your book is set in the Mary Queen of Scots era. And when we get to the part in the story
01:48:12.340 where your book is, like we'll talk, we'll mention that. But like there's so much spy shit going on 0.98
01:48:16.900 in this story right like William Cecil's got his spies Mary's got his spies just spies everywhere 0.97
01:48:21.240 the spy who only draws graphic novels like spies and your book is like Mary Queen Scott's era 0.72
01:48:26.060 comma spy shit like yes I extremely regret not making my book a graphic novel in the style of 0.96
01:48:34.040 that one make your book just be one big picture yes all happening at the same time with a giant 0.99
01:48:40.520 out of proportion Darnley in the corner yes yeah yes and then you have another book that's coming
01:48:46.420 up that people can pre-order yes you can pre-order my second book uh it's called let the dead bury
01:48:51.560 the dead it is out in october um you can also find me on the internet if you search my name i'm
01:48:58.320 around and you have is there not elsonepstein.com or something there is that would be your your
01:49:03.100 once i update that website to be accurate to the present moment that will have oh wait but also
01:49:08.700 talk about your um newsletter because you did a two-part darnly special in your newsletter i did
01:49:14.020 Yes. My sub stack is called Dirtbags Through the Ages. It is what it says on the tin. It's terrible, terrible people in history. My most popular issue of the sub stack is my two part Darnley special. So if you're looking for a place to start, you can listen to. Anne and I have now talked about Darnley for, I think, upwards of four hours. You can get my more concise thoughts on Darnley in about 2000.
01:49:38.640 But also you've got all the all the good pictures. You don't have the mermaid picture, but you do have other good pictures there.
01:49:43.100 well now i wish i might have to go back and well the mermaid picture but that's like because your
01:49:46.980 thing ends when darley dies the a mermaid picture is more appropriate were you to write about
01:49:50.820 bothwell for instance not saying he's a dirtbag but i mean stay tuned for next week we shall see
01:49:56.400 we shall see what what he ends up doing i think it's so yeah again just like the just like that 0.94
01:50:01.940 episode of colombo it was so silly watching this guy trying to cover up his own crime while colombo
01:50:06.940 was investigating it and colombo knew from minute one that this guy was the killer and he was just 0.66
01:50:10.460 setting him up. But in this, there's not the Columbo figure. It's just Bothwell being like,
01:50:14.460 well, I'm just going to investigate this crime. I did. Guess it was Thunder. Oh, you don't believe
01:50:19.940 that? He's just, he's bad. Everyone's bad at schemes. And that's... If there is a Columbo
01:50:25.840 in the story, though, it's Cecil. Yes. Yes. Peter Falk is William Cecil. Definitely. I don't know.
01:50:33.700 Maybe the guy who drew the picture is the Columbo. I think that guy deserves his own show. I don't
01:50:37.840 know i don't know maybe for next time i'll try and find what the guy's name was because that
01:50:40.780 picture is outstanding again the pictures so yeah if you want to follow this podcast and see the
01:50:45.320 pictures of things we've been describing if you go to instagram i'm at vulgar history pod i put up
01:50:49.620 a little post with pictures every week and then also i'm at tiktok at vulgar history and if you
01:50:56.400 go to vulgarhistory.com you can get transcriptions of the most recent episodes if you go to the
01:51:01.760 episode there's will be a little thing to click on to get the transcriptions and those transcriptions
01:51:05.380 are by Aveline Malik from The Wordery. And I have a store, vulgarhistory.com slash store

01:51:24.180 there. And honestly, I'm thinking like, what's our new merch going to be for American Scots?
01:51:28.480 Like from last time we have the like, You're My Tortoise, R.I.P. Davey Rizzio Memorial. From this,
01:51:34.400 i don't know do we want to have the tits out mermaid i don't know i'm not sure i kind of want 0.94
01:51:39.240 like a starbucks cup that's got the tits out mermaid on it but we might get sued for copyright 0.98
01:51:43.880 the tits out mermaid like the first thing i thought of when i saw it was the starbucks mermaid 0.98
01:51:47.420 like she's got that sort of vibe i don't know but you know what tits out brigade all the best ideas 0.98
01:51:51.680 for merch comes from you so let me know what you think what else oh yeah patreon i have a patreon

01:52:06.600 which is where Alison,
01:52:07.720 who you've been listening to me talk with, 0.99
01:52:09.580 and our friend Lana Wood Johnson,
01:52:10.680 we talk about costume dramas.
01:52:13.960 Where I live, honestly, sorry,
01:52:15.560 it's just like pouring rain.
01:52:17.340 It feels very like evocative
01:52:18.640 for all the weird murders we've been talking about.
01:52:23.100 And then a mighty blast of thunder
01:52:24.500 and a house will explode or something.
