00:00:00.000 hello and welcome to vulgar history a feminist women's history comedy podcast my name is ann
00:00:20.900 foster and this is part two of our super special about fredigand and i'm gonna do like sort of
00:00:29.760 like a previously unfredigand moment but truly if you're listening to this and you haven't heard
00:00:34.780 part one yet like you know you do you i respect all of your choices but you're gonna it's gonna
00:00:42.000 make a lot more sense if you listen to part one first because we're talking about a time and a
00:00:45.840 place about which prior to doing research i knew nothing so actually no so if you're like jumping
00:00:52.000 into this and you actually already know all about sixth century frankish dynasty disputes maybe
00:00:58.640 you'll get it but anyway part one is out there for you this is part two I'm gonna be honest if
00:01:04.940 this if I get to talking and it's more than an hour and I'm not done I'm gonna cut it off and
00:01:09.820 we're gonna do a part three because there's a lot to get into and I think it's helpful for all of us
00:01:15.780 to take a week off in between to just like dissect what we've learned so where we left off last time
00:01:24.940 is so the frankish kingdom was in four parts and then it was in three parts
00:01:31.840 it's still in three parts but uh one of the kings is dead well i guess
00:01:38.240 yeah so basically one of the kings is dead so we've got three kingdoms going on right now
00:01:43.880 we have burgundy which is being ruled over by guntram who is one of the original four brothers
00:01:51.180 from when the kingdoms were originally like assigned to them his deal is he doesn't have
00:01:57.900 an heir like children of his own he has sort of taken very extreme religious vows and so clearly
00:02:05.140 he's not gonna have any more kids because of chastity reasons abstinence reasons so he named
00:02:11.060 his nephew Childeric as his heir and Child oh no Childebert Childebert is the son of Brunhilde
00:02:20.760 and his dad was Sigebert so Childebert is at this point I think like 11 years old so he's like the
00:02:27.400 child king of his own kingdom which is Austrasia which is I mean just side note it sounds like one
00:02:34.340 of the names of countries from like a Hallmark Christmas movie about a fake kingdom where there's
00:02:39.160 like a prince who falls in love with a commoner or something like Austrasia it's so close to being
00:02:45.180 australia to being austria to being asia yet not so austrasia is being ruled over by 11 year old
00:02:53.220 childebert but really it's being ruled over by his mom brunhilde and then the third kingdom
00:02:59.440 is neustria also sometimes called swanson i'm not sure why and that's being ruled over by
00:03:06.560 chilperic and his wife fredegund and although they were married i get the sense it's sort of
00:03:12.380 a similar thing to like a child king with his mom ruling because Chilperic is utterly devoted to
00:03:18.360 Fredegund and she's the one who's like getting shit done so because they had like I think two
00:03:24.220 or three sons in a row who all died of dysentery and because they're very strict about the whole 0.94
00:03:30.220 patro-lineal structure of it all although they have a daughter named Regunth who we're gonna 0.97
00:03:38.100 to learn more about this week um she obviously can't inherit because the rules are bullshit and
00:03:42.500 so they're just like without a son they're like well who's going to be the heir and it's all like
00:03:46.240 this dynastic situation so chilperic ended up having to name childebert his heir as well so
00:03:52.640 presumably for a time um if guntram and chilperic both died then childebert slash his mom brunhilda
00:04:00.040 would be the king of all the frankish territories and there would only be one king and
00:04:03.840 well let's see if that happens so all this happened but less than a year after Childebert
00:04:11.340 was declared the heir to Chilperic Fredegund became pregnant again she is now in her 30s and
00:04:19.540 she'd been having children for like I don't even know 20 years um and the boys all keep dying of
00:04:25.380 dysentery so this baby was a boy named Theoderic and that's where we left last time and I'm sorry
00:04:32.520 for having to break this news to you because the first part of this new story is that baby
00:04:38.160 Theoderic also dies of dysentery during another rainy season so just like the rain
00:04:44.900 makes sweeps up all the poo water and just baby boys die of dysentery this is the third time in
00:04:52.300 a row fredigant i mean still postpartum right um with a total lack of emotional support presumably
00:05:01.680 um she was having a time of it like this was her third like child who had died very young of the
00:05:10.020 same disease like she must have felt like she was under a curse in fact she did so she looked around
00:05:14.560 to find someone to blame so this is sort of like if you've watched um Peaky Blinders I don't know
00:05:21.820 what the overlap is between vulgar history listeners and watchers of Peaky Blinders but
00:05:25.800 I just watched the whole series a bit ago and there's a part where somebody dies and a character
00:05:29.960 it's basically his fault but he just like needs to find a reason that it's not his fault so he
00:05:36.000 can move on with life and so he talks to an old um romany woman who was just like yes there was
00:05:42.340 the jewel that you gave your wife that was cursed she died because of the curse and he was like
00:05:46.780 great it was the curse not my fault moving on so fred is also looking i think to find a reason
00:05:53.760 someone to punish basically she wants someone to punish for this because she's really mad she's
00:06:00.320 obviously devastated so she's looking around for someone to blame and she heard word or maybe she
00:06:07.440 personally overheard this she has a spy network right like whether she personally heard or somebody
00:06:11.920 else did that a courtier was talking about how he knew a cure for dysentery and she was like wait a
00:06:18.060 minute if there's a person here who knows a cure for dysentery like a why didn't he give it to my
00:06:22.600 son and b this is a leap so just stay with me and fred and remember the emotional extreme that
00:06:29.720 she's in she's like wait if he knows a cure for dysentery maybe he also knows a potion that
00:06:34.100 causes dysentery therefore maybe he caused my son to die so she had this guy arrested
00:06:40.720 he was tortured um and even under torture he didn't admit to poisoning the baby prince but
00:06:46.540 he did admit to purchasing and using potions but not for um malicious reasons just to kind of like
00:06:52.120 to make friends and influence people so fredegund arrested the woman he named who had provided him
00:06:58.760 with these potions which were probably just like placebos oh the women sorry it's not just one
00:07:05.680 woman so there are various women from whom he bought these potions they're probably healers
00:07:09.860 or midwives um probably giving him some herbs anyway under torture they agreed they said what
00:07:17.940 they needed to say to make the torture stop which we all know doesn't mean that it's true
00:07:21.900 uh so they agreed they said yes we caused the baby's death we're witches and then fredegund
00:07:28.560 had them executed some by fire some by being torn apart on a wheel and some by drowning
00:07:34.900 and then in her grief fredegund set up her grief is just like really outward pointing
00:07:44.940 so she then set up a giant pyre like a giant pile of stuff she lit on fire of all of baby
00:07:52.680 theoderic's possessions so i don't know like his crib i don't know his like little
00:07:56.660 wooden toys or whatever so it seemed like she was just sort of like exercising the memory of him
00:08:03.180 but here's people didn't know why she was doing this except they're just kind of like fredigan's
00:08:08.280 gotta fredigan like she's a woman with big emotions let's just let her do it but i'll let 0.92
00:08:12.500 went on a secret that the people watching her this time didn't know which was secretly she was 0.89
00:08:16.880 pregnant again but terrified terrified and paranoid that this baby would also fall victim to 0.89
00:08:22.660 what seemed to her like a curse so i'm guessing she got rid of all of theoderek's baby stuff just
00:08:30.160 in case something among it was cursed so that nothing cursed could touch her new baby so she
00:08:35.080 was secret pregnant this is like celebrities during covid quarantine who are just like oh
00:08:42.420 hey guess what i like experienced a full pregnancy and here's my baby it's my baby's a year old now
00:08:47.360 you know she's doing like a scarlett johansson type pregnancy reveal here just like not telling
00:08:51.580 anybody i respect it so meanwhile while she's going through all this and she's pregnant again
00:08:57.640 like they do have a daughter named Riggunth who was a cool young teen and just dealing with being
00:09:05.320 well with her younger brothers perpetually dying and with her just kind of having nothing to do
00:09:10.060 because to everybody she was just sort of like a human bartering chip to see like what alliance
00:09:15.220 could they marry her off into and they chose to marry her off into the Visigoths which are the
00:09:21.300 people from whom Brunhilde came from and side note Brunhilde's daughter Ingrid had already
00:09:27.420 married into them as well so just kind of like making a nice little alliance riggins was loaded
00:09:32.700 down with a massive amount of treasure like a weirdly large amount of treasure to bring with
00:09:37.300 her as a show of how powerful and successful her parents were and this is kind of setting the scene
00:09:44.200 but then everybody was taken by surprise when fredigan's husband chilperic was assassinated
00:09:52.220 so all we know about the assassin who escaped apparently his name was falco which is a great
00:09:59.960 name and apparently as he stabbed chilperic to death he said out loud that this was revenge
00:10:06.940 for how chilperic had killed sigibert um remember and the person who killed sigibert was actually
00:10:17.520 were actually these two young boys who fred like forced to do it with the poison knives but anyway
00:10:23.760 so apparently this was so it seemed like he the assassin either was allied with um austrasia which
00:10:31.920 is where sigebert used to be the king or they wanted people to think it was austrasia like
00:10:36.540 everyone's playing four-dimensional chess um falco the assassin also used the same sort of
00:10:41.160 poison steak knives as when Sigbert was killed decades later a story was written down that
00:10:50.000 Fredegund had been having an affair and Chilperic had found out about it and was going to have her
00:10:54.580 and her lover executed so perhaps Fredegund is the one who arranged for Chilperic's assassination
00:11:00.020 and I would not put it past her but so if it was her she may have gotten them to make it sound like
00:11:08.240 they were from austrasia so she could get rid of chilperic while also framing brunhilde but
00:11:12.180 that's one possibility but the fact that he was like this is for austrasia
00:11:17.980 means that it's just as likely that brunhilde had sent falco god knows she had reasons to want to
00:11:25.240 kill chilperic after he'd been responsible for the murder of her sister and her husband and of 0.55
00:11:30.140 her kind of second husband merovech and for putting the evidence together so brunhilde's
00:11:37.100 ambassador had been in court like around shilperic a bit beforehand so he was around and could have
00:11:43.920 hired an assassin on her behalf while he was there and then also brunhilde and her son were
00:11:50.560 kind of weirdly well positioned in the aftermath to like they were right there on route so
00:11:56.600 that seems also possible um we don't know who hired falco because he escaped you know what
00:12:06.800 This is, like, I feel like the one assassin in this entire saga
00:12:09.560 who actually didn't get his arms and legs ripped off afterwards or whatever.
00:12:14.600 But here's the thing.
00:12:16.640 I doubt that it was Fredegund who did this.
00:12:19.620 Like, she knew, we'll see from her actions later on,
00:12:22.000 like, being without a husband was kind of detrimental to her. 0.78
00:12:24.560 And also remember, she was secretly pregnant. 0.99
00:12:26.860 Nobody knew she was pregnant. 0.53
00:12:30.280 So if Brunhilde had been the one who planned this assassination,
00:12:34.660 she may have done it assuming that her son childebert would then inherit the kingdom as
00:12:38.680 heir because remember he had been named heir but she didn't know that there was going to be another 0.99
00:12:44.020 actual heir so i would suggest this was not in any of the resources but i'm just like a bitch 0.85
00:12:51.120 who likes a murder mystery i think the killer might have been gundavald do you remember he's 0.93
00:12:56.200 the other younger half-brother and he has the support of the byzantine empire and he wants to
00:13:01.660 take over anyway this is i'm so sorry a cold case we will never know who did it but the end result
00:13:08.780 is the same no matter who it was which is chilperic is dead fredegund is a widow meanwhile
00:13:14.860 rigunth and her entourage remember they said it was like way more treasure than maybe they should
00:13:21.440 have uh they had been robbed en route numerous times i think a bunch of the guards who were with
00:13:27.180 sort of were just gave up and ran away so this was not a very uh victorious little entourage
00:13:34.480 parade going towards Spain and the Visigoths to um marry her uh so while they were still en route
00:13:42.920 on this kind of like doomed trip they found out about the murder of her father and so they stopped
00:13:49.340 going to Visigoths because they weren't sure what to do and also they had no money and her father
00:13:53.800 was dead so she just sort of waited in a convent for a ride back home basically a messenger went 0.88
00:14:00.800 back to fredegund to let her know like hey here's what's up ragunth is hiding in a convent and also
00:14:06.580 all of her treasure you gave her was stolen and all of her guards abandoned her fredegund 0.95
00:14:12.140 this is before there was the the saying don't kill the messenger well maybe it was because
00:14:17.940 she didn't kill the messenger but she did humiliate and berate him and blamed him for
00:14:23.080 the message and then she rounded up all the guys who were meant to have protected riggins and had 0.99
00:14:28.080 them all beaten plundered and maimed for failing to protect the princess and all of her treasure
00:14:32.320 and i feel like yeah those guys did not do a very good job and then so she needed a man 0.90
00:14:44.140 and she needed a plan because this was a situation in which women had she had no power of her own 0.86
00:14:50.440 remember the way that the society worked was like when you're a woman married to the king then you 0.85
00:14:55.640 have the power because you're married to him but as soon as he dies they're going to ship you off
00:14:59.080 to a convent or even before he dies if he divorces you like she had no power ever so she had to
00:15:03.780 figure something out so looking at her options what she did is she wrote to her brother-in-law
00:15:08.040 Guntram who's this like cranky old man who's also celibate she knew he didn't want to get married
00:15:16.600 again for abstinence reasons and she also knew that he didn't like strong independent women
00:15:21.640 like he was allied with brunhilde but he did not like her and i think he'd done a thing where like
00:15:26.440 he sent off one of his wives and she came back to try to take over and then he like 0.58
00:15:31.840 shipped her to a convent anyway guntram big old sexist did not like women speaking to mind 0.66
00:15:36.860 knowing this fredegund who is so smart she wrote him a letter being like oh no i'm just like a poor
00:15:43.120 woman who can't defend herself could you please come take over my country my husband is dead and 0.96
00:15:48.900 i have this surprise baby gun trim didn't know about the baby because nobody knew about the baby 0.94
00:15:53.620 because that was her whole plan but he was like oh my god like i don't care about fredegund but
00:15:58.640 the baby is a boy and that's important to me so he rushed over to provide his forces to protect
00:16:04.140 fredegund and the new baby king and then just to sort of like extra make him like her she let him
00:16:10.980 choose the name for the baby and the baby was named clothar which is the name of guntram's
00:16:15.820 father and luckily guntram got there just before um king cherubert the 11 year old son of brunhilde
00:16:25.020 so they also charged over there because they're like oh chip herrick's dad we're going to take
00:16:28.300 over as well so um cherubert showed up and he was like hand over the murderess like fredegund
00:16:35.740 the person who killed my aunt Gil Swintha and my father Sigbert and my uncle Chilperic and my two
00:16:43.100 cousins which were Chilperic's previous other sons so Chilbert has like reasons to want to
00:16:49.560 take Fredigan to deal with her but Guntram was Fredigan's protector now and he was like but she
00:16:54.640 has a baby who is the king and so I have to protect her now because she had a boy son and that makes 0.87
00:17:00.200 her matter to me and so fredegund was safe for now but living with gundram sucked because he was
00:17:07.940 like this awful paternalistic older guy who wouldn't allow her to have any power and like
00:17:13.820 i mean he was not he was not vibing with her as a show of power gundram forced fredegund to dine
00:17:24.000 with him every night even if she didn't want to until one night she excused herself because i bet
00:17:28.860 those dinners were like so annoying and he probably like made her not talk or something
00:17:34.700 but she was like she excused herself saying she had to go because she was pregnant which is like
00:17:41.240 we're gonna look at this because why would her being pregnant mean she can't join him for dinner
00:17:46.100 but more importantly how what so there was like her husband was dead but there were two months
00:17:55.880 between the birth of cloth are and chill peric's death so she could have conceivably gotten pregnant 0.58
00:18:01.000 again um but that's like a britney spears level like back-to-back pregnancy and that was also
00:18:07.980 for their time as well as for ours really it's outside the norm for people to like get instantly
00:18:14.960 pregnant right again especially if you're breastfeeding etc so but they're culturally
00:18:19.620 women usually waited at least eight months after giving birth to become pregnant again i think
00:18:26.360 that's based on a bible thing maybe but also i think the bible thing might be based on just like 0.95
00:18:31.380 best practices of like making women have better chances of not dying so she was probably lying 0.97
00:18:38.560 um but also if she said she's pregnant that mangundrum would have would be less likely to 0.81
00:18:44.140 turn against her because her new alleged baby would also be an heir so it's maybe a way to
00:18:48.740 protect herself um to be clear though like no baby ever came after clothar and nobody ever wrote 0.95
00:18:56.600 about her being pregnant again so she was probably just trying to get out of an annoying dinner
00:19:00.860 situation or i mean maybe she had a miscarriage or maybe i don't know i it just seems to me like
00:19:08.140 she was just being like i can't deal with this dinner anymore they're like well where are you
00:19:11.900 going she's like i'm pregnant peace out but also it sort of protected her as well because
00:19:17.720 if she was pregnant that meant that uh guntram wouldn't be able to send her to a convent which 0.99
00:19:22.640 is what he liked to do with other widowed old queens because pregnant women can't go to convents
00:19:26.940 i guess is the rule and then also although guntram was this like super monk-like guy who knows what 0.65
00:19:34.500 he was really like she might have been worried that he might try to have sex with her but if
00:19:40.100 she was pregnant he wouldn't do that because culturally that also just wasn't a thing and
00:19:44.420 was very rule following so she just kind of this whole thing just bide her some time
00:19:48.440 to figure her next move but i feel like we're going to get into a series of iconic fredigant
00:19:54.300 moments and this is but one of them so she and i think we know enough about her that she was not
00:20:01.460 into living this like quiet life of retirement in the countryside uh the chronicler gregory of
00:20:07.840 tours wrote she was very depressed because much of her power had come to an end and yet she
00:20:13.100 considered herself a better woman than Brunhilde. And she's just someone who was always striving for
00:20:20.720 more and always wanted more. And she liked to have a scheme and a project and a plan. And so 1.00
00:20:24.920 she wasn't just going to like hang out and do nothing. Also, it was important to her that
00:20:28.800 everybody knew that she was the best. So she decided to do her favorite hobby of trying to
00:20:35.680 assassinate Brunhilde again. So again, because this has worked before with Sigbert, she sent
00:20:41.740 a household staff member unpaid servant uh to secretly get a job at brunhilde's palace to sort
00:20:48.660 of like ingratiate himself in there and then once he was working there the plan was for him to
00:20:53.540 kill brunhilde but i guess he was acting suspiciously because brunhilde's staff
00:20:59.680 noticed this guy was kind of uh up to no good so they grabbed him they tortured him and he confessed
00:21:06.260 what he was up to like he literally said like oh yeah fredigan sent me here to assassinate brunhilde
00:21:10.340 to show how little she cared like brunhilde didn't punish him well other than torturing but
00:21:16.000 she didn't like cut off his hands or whatever she didn't kill him she just shipped him back 0.99
00:21:19.840 alive to fredigan just like a just like a fedex package just like cash on delivery you know
00:21:27.040 fredigan was so mad i mean she's mad at brunhilde but i guess she's also mad at this guy who like
00:21:33.240 didn't do the killing so she had the guy's hands and feet cut off because that's just what she does
00:21:38.800 so then she's just sort of like on a little mini vengeance uh checklist fredigan went after a guy
00:21:49.000 named eberulf who had been the royal treasurer uh during the chilperic era and she was mad at him
00:21:56.380 because he'd refused to help her directly after chilperic's assassination uh guntram agreed with
00:22:03.560 this like the whole trying to kill brunhilda guntram maybe didn't know about it for sure
00:22:07.700 wouldn't have been behind it but gun trim agreed with her like let's go to eberulf for his own
00:22:12.980 reasons so eberulf was stripped of his titles his lands and his fortunes eberulf went running off to
00:22:19.320 claim sanctuary which is the thing where like if you're in a church you can't be arrested people
00:22:24.580 did that a lot in this era they were like really believed in the that was a rule if you were it's
00:22:31.360 like when you're playing in the playground as your kids and you're like if i stand in this one corner
00:22:36.260 like no one can touch meets the magic corner so eberulf went to claim sanctuary in a church
00:22:42.400 somewhere guntram was like oh no i remember guntram is like super like rule following slash
00:22:47.280 very like biblical literalism so he's like well how can we trick him to leave the church so we
00:22:52.600 can arrest him and fredigand was like okay uh or what if we just send someone into the church to
00:22:59.800 kill him and she did so she sent her own man not guntram's man she sent her own man into the church
00:23:06.200 where a bloodbath ensued uh the end result was that the guy fredegund had sent probably another
00:23:12.520 one of these like servants who she's like i'm gonna give you a potion to make you brave and
00:23:16.680 the potion is like wine and then he ends up dead but it was worth it to do it for her so fredegund's
00:23:22.840 man ended up getting run through with a spear but he succeeded because eberulf's brains scattered
00:23:28.660 across the church is the description i read as this happened men on both sides looted the church
00:23:35.680 of all of its expensive items. Guntram likely suspected Fredegund had been behind this because
00:23:41.620 it was a classic Fredegund situation like she did not respect the rules of sanctuary and she always
00:23:49.060 did the most but he was too busy with other stuff to call her out or punish her
00:23:53.500 so she got away with it because what was he busy with? Well the youngest half-brother
00:23:59.880 gundavald member um his hair had all grown back was launching another invasion funded by the
00:24:08.980 byzantine empire and he was also apparently considering gundavald was considering a marriage
00:24:16.820 to brunhilde and that made guntram really freak out because that would freeze guntram out of
00:24:21.680 the territory owned by Brunhilde and son so he was like okay I need to like really make sure that
00:24:30.180 Brunhilde and her son Childebert are like super allied with me so he had a big like public
00:24:35.200 meeting I don't know what you would call it it was sort of like a big I'd say it's like a photo
00:24:40.680 call but there's not cameras but in front of everybody had a big public meeting with Childebert
00:24:46.000 Brunhilde's son to remind everybody that Childebert was Guntram's heir and he was like
00:24:51.600 child of Bert you are a man now because child of Bert was 15 and here's the thing because 0.61
00:24:56.740 we see this over and over again where there's these like powerful women and the only way they 0.99
00:25:01.320 can rule is like being the regent for their sons and the sons are always useless and suck and 0.98
00:25:06.440 child of Bert lives up to that he just is useless so there was this big meeting and it was sort of 0.98
00:25:12.800 a place where he could have you know said or done anything but seemingly all he heard his uncle say
00:25:19.060 it was you were a man now so he went off um and got a courtesan pregnant because he's like well
00:25:25.220 it sounds like I need to go father some children I'm 15 here we go Brunhilde was not into this
00:25:32.900 because she's like that's not what we're doing child of birth we're not just like having children 0.91
00:25:39.200 unmarried with courtesans so she got him married to a very uh easily persuadable woman who is
00:25:46.140 never gonna get in her way and her this woman's name was philuba but also brunhilde knew like
00:25:52.260 she'd seen like her sister was dead because fredegund had like raised herself from being
00:25:56.860 not a courtesan but like a servant to being the queen she didn't want another like fredegund style 0.97
00:26:03.060 ascent of a lower class woman so that's why she chose philuba so gundavald still running around
00:26:10.800 so he was like well i just really need to marry he was widowed at this point he had children too
00:26:14.860 he just really wanted to marry somebody to sort of like weasel his way in so he could be the king
00:26:20.220 of somewhere so he tried to see if he could marry Fredegund's daughter Riggun's who is still single
00:26:25.160 after the whole caravan robbery situation Fredegund herself I don't know if he considered
00:26:33.100 marrying her anyway but none of this came to anything because Guntram's forces came together
00:26:38.440 successfully killed gundavald so that whole threat is done this this part two episode it's
00:26:46.580 part one was like here's like 75 people and at the end of it like five of them were still alive
00:26:52.780 so every time someone dies in the story i'm just like oh okay less people get this gets less
00:26:58.000 confusing but guntram was mad at fredegund for entertaining possibly marrying riggunth to
00:27:06.100 gundavald so to get back at her guntram made public accusations that fredigan's son baby
00:27:13.340 king clothar was illegitimate if he was believed fredigan would be seen as an adulteress and
00:27:20.820 probably a murderess clothar would no longer be the baby king and fredigan would no longer
00:27:26.260 have any power at all which uh she was not going to let happen so the way that like the legal system 1.00
00:27:34.560 worked in this time is that there were two ways that she could answer his accusation so either 0.65
00:27:40.760 by trial like a court case you know with a judge and probably a jury of men and everybody has to
00:27:47.240 testify or by ordeal which I guess trial by combat type situation but there was also a third way
00:27:57.320 less commonly used i remember fredigan was a very well read so she knew all the the loopholes
00:28:05.900 all the legal loopholes and the third way was if she had 12 trustworthy noblemen noblemen vouch for
00:28:12.900 her in public so the thing she could do is she could have 12 trustworthy noblemen vouch for her
00:28:19.760 in public so she set about arranging this to happen for her and she had you remember army of 1.00
00:28:26.000 spies like so influential she called in every favor she had from anybody using her supporters 1.00
00:28:31.060 to find more supporters and then the day that she was supposed to show up with like that she had to 1.00
00:28:36.000 answer to the accusations where she all that was needed for was 12 noblemen to speak for her 0.95
00:28:42.520 and she marched in not with 12 men but with three bishops and 300 noblemen all ready to say how she
00:28:51.340 was the most trustworthy person she's totally not an adulteress um they were all like all 303 of us
00:28:59.280 can all guarantee clothar is totally not illegitimate and in the face of this guntram had
00:29:04.520 to admit defeat he obviously wasn't happy about it but just tally that up for like fredegund
00:29:09.900 icon status meanwhile she can't stop trying to kill brunhilde so she was found out guntram found 0.99
00:29:19.920 out that she was yet again trying to kill brunhilde because guntram intercepted a letter in which her
00:29:24.720 plans to assassinate were discussed i want to make it clear this was not fredigan's letter it was not
00:29:30.520 from her because she was too smart to let her letters be intercepted uh someone else wrote to
00:29:36.640 her someone else wrote about it so guntram intercepted this letter and he gave a heads up
00:29:40.900 to Brunhilde and Childebert. And because of this heads up, they found two clerics armed with
00:29:49.620 swords with special grooves in them to hold poison, like special swords with built-in poison
00:29:55.400 pockets, because Fredegund was like leveling up her methods of using poison knives. These two men
00:30:05.020 were tortured mutilated and killed and throughout all of this fredigan was still stuck in his house
00:30:12.780 in rouen and the thing about rouen is that her the the bishop of rouen at the time was her old enemy
00:30:22.120 and everyone's favorite name pray tax status so how did he get back here so the thing is that
00:30:32.380 pretext status had been he was a bishop and then he stopped being a bishop he was like
00:30:37.720 de-bishoped by chilperic i think because of how he had been found to be secretly funding
00:30:44.100 gundavald but then he after chilperic died he was like oh maybe i can go back in he came back and
00:30:50.980 he was like i'm gonna be a bishop can i be a bishop again and guntram was like okay even
00:30:55.040 the friday gand was like he is my mortal enemy guntram's like i'm a man and i know better
00:30:59.060 sorry pray text is back in the scene so he was a bishop and he wasn't a bishop now he's a bishop
00:31:04.580 again and he would like make fun of Fred again being like you know maybe I was a bishop and
00:31:11.020 then I was not a bishop but I'm a bishop again but you were a servant and you'll never and like
00:31:18.680 if you're not going to always be a royal because you used to be a servant so like you're going to
00:31:22.680 be a servant again one day basically which is like bold of him to be mocking fred again after we've
00:31:30.020 seen literally everything about her but also this was like do you know in the second and third back
00:31:36.960 to the future movies where there's this thing where when someone calls marty mcfly chicken
00:31:41.880 he just like loses all sense of logic and reason and he'll do anything foolhardy because he like
00:31:48.100 can't bear to be called chicken so this is her achilles heel whenever anyone reminded her about
00:31:55.420 her non-royal beginnings and the possibility that she could be cast aside once her son came of age
00:32:00.520 because she herself was not technically royal that was just like she would go loco and so it 0.67
00:32:08.240 will not surprise you to know that she said about planning to murder pretax tetas so we've already
00:32:14.140 established that she does not have any respect for the sanctity of churches so she said she 0.90
00:32:21.680 arranged for an assassin to come into the easter mass so like remember they're like this is a
00:32:27.500 christian situation so during the easter mass so praetax tatos was just standing up at the front
00:32:33.940 like being the bishop doing the mass and like as he's like literally in the church giving the mass
00:32:38.660 this guy ran up and stabbed him in the armpit which is an interesting place to stab somebody
00:32:44.280 this is I can't emphasize how shocking this would have been to everybody because churches it's not
00:32:50.280 just like that's the place you go for sanctuary when you like don't want to be arrested but it's
00:32:54.480 just kind of like a church is a place like it's sacred to them um not to Fred again she's just
00:33:01.560 like everyone thinks the church is sacred great that's why I'm gonna like assassinate the bishop 0.71
00:33:05.180 so she sent in a guy pretexted to stab in the armpit but guess what did not kill him 0.75
00:33:10.480 uh everyone just kind of stood and or sat there watching this happen like the other bishops who
00:33:16.000 were there who were i'm gonna guess paid off by fredigand didn't like rush up to help him
00:33:21.040 but eventually some parishioners helped him and they like carried him into his bed because i guess
00:33:27.160 hospitals weren't invented yet so he's just sort of like in the bed like bleeding out i guess and
00:33:33.800 fredigand came to visit this is why like icon status and she's like oh my god pretextatus
00:33:40.000 you've been stabbed in church how awful i hope whoever the assassin is gets caught soon and
00:33:46.900 pretextatus was like i think we both know who is behind this and she was like want me to send my
00:33:52.680 personal doctors to help you and he's like slowly bleeding out and dying just like um no i don't
00:34:00.080 want your personal doctors aka probably also assassins and then he's like and also you are
00:34:05.560 a murderer fredigan and he listed all the people who he allegedly thinks that she killed which he 0.97
00:34:12.880 was probably right and then he cursed her for the rest of her days but she gave no fucks and left 0.79
00:34:19.680 and he died the next day so like mission accomplished so the people of rouen were freaked
00:34:27.840 out that a bishop was you know assassinated in the middle of easter mass which is like
00:34:32.320 fair enough to be freaked out about that so the town leaders i'm not sure how many there are let's
00:34:39.340 assume like three of them came to fred again to be like uh we know this was you and she was like
00:34:45.060 let's talk about this over dinner and they were like probably not because you're probably going
00:34:50.340 to poison our food or whatever and she's like okay but do you want to accept this traditional
00:34:54.760 frankish drink and this is a detail i'm going to give you that may or may not explain everything
00:35:01.260 about everyone's behavior throughout this entire story because the traditional frankish drink
00:35:05.840 was absinthe mixed with wine and honey which is quite a beverage um i know there's other history
00:35:15.480 podcasts where they like invent a mixed drink to like drink based on every story and if i was that
00:35:21.200 sort of podcast that's what that's what i would do um hebsen's wine and honey if they're just
00:35:28.120 drinking that instead of water then like of course everyone's behaving in this assassination
00:35:33.600 you wait they're all just like drunk slash high slash on a sugar rush constantly anyway so she
00:35:42.380 gave him this drink and he's like well of course i'll accept a drink of hebsen's wine and honey
00:35:45.680 from you like that's just a thing we do here we're the franks but obviously it was poisoned 0.95
00:35:50.080 and as he drank it he's like oh fuck it's poisoned and he warned the other town leaders to run away 0.96
00:35:54.840 but they were caught as they ran away and they were all killed so but you can't just like murder 0.98
00:36:01.580 everyone like this so the church itself set out to investigate like if we're keeping track she
00:36:06.300 killed the bishop and then the town leaders so they wanted to find out the dirt on Fred again
00:36:12.680 so to persuade the people of rouen to to tattle on fred like to be snitches the church banned
00:36:20.060 baptisms marriages and burials in town and so that made people give in because people wanted to have
00:36:26.840 baptisms marriages and burials basically the church went on strike and so everybody pointed
00:36:32.860 the fingers they're like yeah fred again was behind everything guntram you're like where is
00:36:37.680 this guy he's busy with war etc but he did send uh a message that he's like uh Fredegund please
00:36:46.400 don't install a new bishop because I'll do that that's my job but Fredegund I mean surprise
00:36:52.500 installed a new bishop because obviously uh she also presented a servant who claimed to have been
00:37:00.300 the assassin and she you know she's just like hey I've like solved this whodunit here's the 0.99
00:37:06.540 assassin it's this random servant um and she's like so sorry pray tax to his family like do
00:37:13.560 whatever you want with this guy um so i guess they decided to torture this guy and under torture this
00:37:18.340 guy said um fredigan had paid him to do all this and then he was executed and i guess that kind of
00:37:23.820 like is like well that's all wrapped up because her her murderous power play had worked um by 546 0.99
00:37:32.960 she was the undisputed leader of the kingdom of Neustria she was the regent for her infant son
00:37:39.100 Clothar Guntram cut out of the area entirely and I don't entirely follow the trajectory of how that
00:37:46.160 came about but I guess it just had to do with her everyone was so terrified of her they're like
00:37:51.720 okay I guess oh and then also like she chose the new bishop and the bishop was like I'm gonna say
00:37:56.540 fredigand is fine because he was the bishop who she had chosen so anyway all of which to say
00:38:03.020 by 546 fredigand is in charge of newistria as the regent to her infant son brunhilda still kind of
00:38:11.720 the power behind austrasia um and guntram like all of those alliances they had between each other
00:38:17.360 now it's just kind of like three kingdoms who all hate each other all going on so uh here's a little
00:38:24.920 side story for you it's about Fredigan's daughter poor Rigonth who just like so she survived all
00:38:33.520 of like her baby brothers kept dying and she had no power because the society was not a society
00:38:42.280 in which teenage princesses had any power which is unfortunate obviously in every society anyway
00:38:50.960 rigan sounds like she was really cool um she was a lot more like her mother than either them
00:38:55.440 would ever admit and that led to them fighting a lot physically so quick recap so rigan's had
00:39:02.400 been betrothed to this visigoth prince in spain but then um her her like entourage was robbed and
00:39:11.460 the news of her father's assassination reached her so when we last left her she was waiting in
00:39:17.820 convent to get a ride home effectively because the marriage to the Visigoth prince had fallen
00:39:24.220 apart eventually she was brought to live with Fredegund in Rouen and these two just like hated
00:39:30.740 each other or more accurately Regunth hated Fredegund and Fredegund was like what have I
00:39:37.240 ever done to you except for like never pay attention to you or love you so I mean Fredegund
00:39:44.100 was so busy birthing and then mourning baby sons that she never paid much attention to rigenth 0.99
00:39:49.280 um also just to note that in this patrilineal society so rigenth couldn't be the heir so she
00:39:56.960 was inherently less important except just as someone to marry off and the whole the a major
00:40:03.520 a major there's a lot of problems but a one major problem with a patrilineal society is that if you
00:40:11.620 look at statistically throughout all of time in history girls in general are often healthier than
00:40:18.560 boys girl babies tend to survive better than boy babies like how many stories have we done on this 0.88
00:40:23.160 podcast where it's like oh no and then the baby who's the heir died like girl babies are just 0.94
00:40:30.180 more resilient and that's what's so dumb about building a society about where girls can't do 0.84
00:40:38.360 anything so riggins just had this sort of sense of uselessness and pointlessness which kind of 0.97
00:40:44.460 makes sense because everyone was just like no one cares about you you don't matter we're just going
00:40:49.240 to send you off to marry somebody jk you're not going to marry that guy all of the guards abandoned 0.53
00:40:55.260 you and now you're just going to like live in this castle with your mother who hates you 0.99
00:40:58.360 so she was like well educated based on the charisma of her parents probably gorgeous
00:41:06.920 very charismatic is this also a thing where it's like we have the women who are amazing and then 0.93
00:41:13.360 their sons like killing themselves over to give their sons power and the sons are useless i think 0.57
00:41:19.160 the daughters are often cool and it's just like so frustrating so riggans is just this cool young 0.98
00:41:24.660 teen um bored all the time and to like find something to do she just flirted shamelessly 0.94
00:41:31.460 with every man she came into contact with and i feel like hats off to you riggans you know 1.00
00:41:38.660 teenage version of a tits out life fredigan was like please stop flirting with every man 0.99
00:41:45.160 um this is going to ruin your marriage prospects and riggans is like what marriage prospects i am 0.97
00:41:49.920 a teenage unmarried woman and then she knew the one thing that she could say to most hurt her
00:41:57.740 mother which is the marty mcfly thing fredigan's sensitivity about having been born a commoner
00:42:03.100 and having been a slave so she would just be like you know i'm royal by blood you're just a servant
00:42:10.260 like one day you're just going to be a servant again and then you know that just again i mean 0.85
00:42:15.520 it's bold of anyone to stand up to fredigans like this after we've seen how many people she can 0.95
00:42:19.720 assassinate but i guess when it's your daughter she's just kind of like screw you mom so their 0.99
00:42:24.980 arguments were screaming matches um sometimes physical altercations with slaps and punches 0.95
00:42:30.180 and then most famously uh during one of these fights fredigan pretended to be tired of arguing
00:42:38.020 and was like you know what riganth like come with me so they go into a room with a giant treasure
00:42:42.480 chest full of riganth's father's old treasure chilperic's treasure and fredigan was like riganth
00:42:49.600 you can take any of your father's old treasures with you and do whatever you want with them
00:42:53.980 and Riganth is like okay I guess this is like a peace offering or whatever so she knelt down and
00:42:59.840 leaned over to like look in the treasure chest to see what she's going to take and you better 0.96
00:43:03.080 believe that her mother Fredegund slammed the lid of the treasure chest on her daughter's neck
00:43:08.440 the servants in the room began freaking out because this was not an accident like this was
00:43:14.980 not just trying to injure her like Fredegund was attempting to murder her daughter via the lid of
00:43:20.060 a treasure chest Rigan's eyes were bulging she couldn't breathe Fred again was just like pushing
00:43:25.620 harder and harder uh eventually one of Rigan's servants ran to the hall for help more attendants
00:43:30.920 came out and they pulled Fred away and helped Riganth get some fresh air and so like parenting
00:43:37.660 tips from Fred again apparently and also that's the last we ever hear about Riganth so I do not
00:43:43.500 know what happened to her after that although if Fred again had successfully killed her I think
00:43:47.480 that would have been recorded so I don't even know I'm gonna guess at this point Fredigan
00:43:52.300 sent Riggins to go off live in a convent because that's just what you did in this era with
00:43:57.160 inconvenient girls and women so the next part of this in my notes is called Fredigan's warrior 0.98
00:44:06.120 queen era so hold on to your tits here we go so the thing is the Guntram was still stomping around 0.87
00:44:13.140 trying to steal land from Fredegund because this whole thing is just like they're so focused on 0.97
00:44:18.300 just each other it's like here's these three kingdoms and all that they're doing is trying
00:44:22.420 to steal land from each other like it's very self-contained they're not trying to like get
00:44:26.940 more land anywhere they're just like this is our land these are the three Frankish kingdoms I'm
00:44:31.300 just gonna keep trying to steal it from each other is all that's happening so the thing is 0.61
00:44:37.100 fredigan was not just like expert at innovating swords with poison pockets in them 1.00
00:44:43.880 and you know unconventional parenting tips she had some real uh good military prowess
00:44:54.820 so i think part of this is just she's just like a smart person who can like figure things that
00:44:59.420 other people don't think about i think also part of it is from all of her book learning like she
00:45:03.400 read about the romans and maybe from growing up as potentially a celtic person she knew some of
00:45:07.960 their stuff too so she had some really cool military ideas and you know me if you listen
00:45:13.560 to this podcast if you listen to this part two episode like i'm not generally i don't care about
00:45:19.120 the details of battles that's like other people do that god bless but the way that fredigan fought
00:45:26.300 battles is like really interesting so for instance um there's a place in an area a people
00:45:36.240 called the bretons so right now we know bretons as um there's breton crackers there's also you
00:45:43.860 know how the stereotypical like modern day french people wear the like black and white horizontal
00:45:49.180 stripe shirts like that's called a breton stripe anyway so there's a breton king named warach
00:45:55.040 and fredigan teamed up with him to help fight off guntram's invading forces she knew that she
00:46:00.680 couldn't send her troops to help warach because then guntram guntram would know that she was
00:46:05.420 behind this and she didn't want guntram to know that she had teamed up with the bretons so instead
00:46:10.060 she got her army to disguise themselves to look like the bretons what did the bretons look like
00:46:16.360 well you remember how the franks had the like distinctive long hair and the like combed nose
00:46:21.380 hair mustaches so the bretons also had a distinctive hairstyle that was shorter so she
00:46:26.220 got all of her men to cut off their hair which was like a big ask in a society in a culture where
00:46:31.160 long hair was so important but then she also got her men to dress in the same distinctive style as
00:46:36.360 the bretons and history does not record what the bretons distinctive clothes were but i have to
00:46:42.420 imagine horizontal black and white stripes so guntram and they won guntram never knew that
00:46:49.320 she was involved because her troops just look like more buttons and they're side one so this
00:46:53.420 is what i mean she's just like she thinks beyond what other people are thinking of um but then
00:47:01.580 as keeps happening due to i don't like are you in france have you been to france modern day france
00:47:07.480 like is there still floods all the time because during this era and we know this for sure because
00:47:13.460 gregor of tours was writing these chronicles and he just like wrote down the weather very faithfully
00:47:19.300 and it's just like rain for it feels like 25 years just like rain floods dysentery so due to floods
00:47:26.960 this weirdly long rainy period fredigan's bad luck and a lack of understanding of communicable
00:47:32.360 diseases um her remaining son clothar got dysentery the same thing that he killed his 0.94
00:47:38.340 older brother and just imagine being her and the same goddamn thing happens to yet another son just 0.95
00:47:43.720 when you're on a roll of like being this warrior queen so she's fought this in different ways 1.00
00:47:50.920 remember one time she burned the tax records and forgave all the tax debts um last time she killed 0.99
00:47:56.880 the guy the midwives who with the potions she burned all of her baby stuff so she's just like
00:48:05.520 you know it's sort of like what what we're experiencing now with pandemic times like
00:48:14.580 when something is so out of your control when anything is out of your control it's like the
00:48:19.460 only way like it sort of helps with my anxiety at least I think like what can I control and that is
00:48:25.640 why if you see me um I've gotten a number of tattoos and piercings since the pandemic began
00:48:33.320 i also got a haircut i'm just like what can i control anyway so fredigan was like what can i
00:48:38.960 control like in the face of just it seems like god's wrath so she gave a massive donation to
00:48:44.360 the church um she interceded to have some enemy soldiers freed but her son got worse and worse
00:48:51.060 like to the point that this poor little baby um funeral planning started because he so obviously
00:48:57.140 he was going to die this is just like devastating not just like to her as a mother but also to her
00:49:01.820 as a regent and like what does this mean for like the kingdoms but then this time the fever broke
00:49:09.200 and he survived and this all seemed to cause sort of like an aha moment for Fred again because she
00:49:16.420 realized like if he died all was lost and even worse Brunhilde would likely come and take over
00:49:22.200 her territory so dealing with her emotions in the only way she knew how and this had worked out well 1.00
00:49:27.440 for her before she turned all of her rage outwards towards her sister-in-law and came out with her
00:49:33.420 most audacious plan yet to assassinate Brunhilde and Childebert and this is where the whole thing
00:49:39.920 is just starting to give me like roadrunner Wile E. Coyote feels because she just keeps trying and
00:49:46.720 Brunhilde just keeps not being assassinated but Fred again will not stop trying so as per ever 0.51
00:49:54.060 she used household staff slash servants slash enslaved people as her assassins um and the 0.89
00:50:01.360 thing about this so the fact that she kept getting these sorts of people to like instead of sending
00:50:07.480 soldiers she sent like household staff why so the thing is so many kings in this era in all around
00:50:15.860 europe killed their rivals all the time constantly but they did it with invading armies and like on
00:50:22.320 the battlefield in wars Fred again preferred to work in the shadows maybe because she wasn't 100%
00:50:28.760 confident in her soldiers loyalty like that they would do what she wanted but also because of her
00:50:34.900 past she knew how to relate to household staff she knew what was important to them she knew and
00:50:41.820 maybe they trusted her because they saw that she was sort of like a local girl done good
00:50:45.640 and I believe she would offer them money if they succeeded which was a better option to them than
00:50:51.440 continuing on being a slave and you know we've talked about several of them were caught and then
00:50:59.960 murdered but like for instance that guy felco like he was not caught like if you succeeded then like
00:51:06.800 your whole world can change so it was worth it to them and she was clearly very persuasive
00:51:10.980 and charismatic in general um she also apparently gave them i think i said this before but i'll
00:51:17.100 explain a bit better she apparently when she had convinced them to do this she would give them what
00:51:21.840 she called claimed was a magic potion to make them more confident uh which was probably just wine
00:51:28.340 but which had a placebo effect and made them more likely to do it so in this instance she sent 12
00:51:36.540 servant assassins six to kill childebert and six to kill brunhilde and so the plan i think again
00:51:45.340 just using like the fact that everyone except for her respected the boundaries of churches
00:51:49.780 um the one guy was supposed to kill childebert in his private chapel he was praying but while he was
00:51:55.640 in his private chapel praying he noticed a man hiding in the shadows this guy admitted he had
00:52:00.940 been sent by fredegand to kill him but he said he couldn't go through with it this guy was just
00:52:06.040 kind of standing there having like a panic attack basically and i feel for this guy he just like
00:52:09.860 could not do it and then he tattled on the other 11 um so childebert had a search around the town
00:52:18.120 and around the palace and they found the other 11 so all 12 were caught of the 12 some died by
00:52:24.120 suicide had died by suicide by the time they were found because they just knew they would be
00:52:28.920 tortured or murdered and wanted to avoid that um others died in custody i'm guessing from torture
00:52:35.540 related injuries those who survived had were mutilated like they had their hands feet nose
00:52:41.540 and or ears cut off so they would be objects of ridicule and that would just remind everybody to
00:52:47.220 not try to kill Sheldabird um her plans foiled again um Fred again was like okay you know I'm
00:52:57.040 gonna just like take a moment before I try killing them again and I'm gonna focus on some other stuff 0.54
00:53:01.020 she focused on what was going on in her own kingdom of neustria namely assassinating all 0.87
00:53:07.300 of her rivals at home you know just to like this is her hobby and she's good at it and here we go
00:53:13.400 because so who are her rivals at home so the thing is because her son cloth there was at this point
00:53:19.980 like seven the boy king she suspected probably correctly that some people had secret plans to
00:53:26.080 try and get rid of him and her and she would not let that happen so and the way that she
00:53:33.760 made that not happen is by just sort of being as ferocious as possible and reminding people to not 0.98
00:53:40.900 fuck with her so one of her jobs as regent was to oversee sort of like small claims court sort of 0.99
00:53:48.180 thing which is important to note because brunhilde also did that in her kingdom and both of this is 1.00
00:53:53.740 a big deal for both of them because before them frankish women never got to be the judge type 1.00
00:53:58.960 person in this situation so they were both like breaking this glass ceiling of like judge judy
00:54:04.200 type stuff so in fred's kingdom there was this family feud going on so it was all within one
00:54:13.840 family it's not like a montague's and capulet's hadfield's and mccoy's thing it's like just one
00:54:18.160 family but all different branches of the family and they all kept killing each other and she kept
00:54:22.540 trying to intercede and being like bring it to me like i'll be your mediator i'll find a resolution
00:54:26.520 but they kept avoiding her presumably because she's a woman they didn't respect her which is
00:54:32.240 a dangerous way to be so eventually she was like okay she invited the three heads of dinner
00:54:37.240 three heads of this family to dinner and they had a great meal and even started to get along
00:54:45.340 and their servants started to fall asleep because the party had been going on for so long i'm
00:54:49.680 assuming they're all drinking their absinthe wine honey drink and if you're thinking like well
00:54:54.280 Fred again has like promised as a mediator you know food brings people together no you are wrong
00:54:59.000 because late into the meal she gave a signal to her servants and the three men with axes came out 0.97
00:55:04.440 and beheaded these three guests like fuck around and find out so this solved the issue of the 0.99
00:55:10.620 warring family in that they were dead now there were other guests at this party by the way it 0.99
00:55:15.880 wasn't just Fred again and these three guys so it was just like Fred again these two guys some
00:55:19.780 others uh the others all just kind of like slowly pieced out left the room presumably at this 0.93
00:55:27.040 reminder that Fred again was not someone to fuck around with so she you know small scale she like 0.96
00:55:34.540 solved this family dispute by killing them all but larger scale this just kind of reminded everybody 0.99
00:55:39.240 just like don't fuck around with Fred again like do not conspire against her like she will find out 0.99
00:55:45.380 and she does not hesitate to bring out men with access and you know what I'm going to 0.98
00:55:56.960 leave us there because we're getting close to it being an hour and I think that's a good length
00:56:05.620 of episode and I want you to be able to really think about what we've learned um get excited
00:56:13.140 for part three will be the last part because we're going to get into the end of it all but also um
00:56:19.300 we're going to get into the scoring which i am it's funny that i'm just like i can't wait to
00:56:27.740 see how she scores where it's like and you invent the scores yourself randomly
00:56:32.280 but i can't wait to see how she scores like the highest anyone has ever gotten on the show
00:56:39.500 thus far Queen Margot got a 37.5 out of 40 and as one of my friends on Instagram said like
00:56:47.760 if anyone is going to get a perfect score like seems like it should be Fred again like who
00:56:53.620 has ever done as much as her ever but we're gonna wait and see so I'm gonna leave it at that for
00:56:59.260 part two tune in next week for part three the exciting conclusion and so I cannot recommend
00:57:08.620 highly enough the dark queens the bloody rivalry that forged the medieval world by shelly puhack
00:57:14.340 which is a biography of a dual biography of fredegand and brunhilde so i that's where i got
00:57:20.880 so much of my information from um she helped me form some of my hot takes about what may or may
00:57:26.560 not have been going on but also if you read the book it's got much more about brunhilde who was
00:57:30.860 absolutely a star as well it's just we're looking at this i approach this myself from a team fred
00:57:37.320 point of view so that's how i'm viewing it but brunhilde how many times so she foiled
00:57:42.560 assassination attempts tits out queen herself as well super recommend that book you can find that
00:57:47.280 book or links to pre-order that book and links to all the other books i've used in this podcast at
00:57:52.320 the page on bookshop.org the links are in the show notes but it's bookshop.org
00:57:57.000 slash shop slash vulgar history um i have my little patreon which is patreon.com slash ann
00:58:04.180 Foster writer and that's where if you pledge as little as one dollar a month um you can get access
00:58:09.820 to some extra content there and so one thing that I've just changed or added to the Patreon also is
00:58:20.540 anyone so if you pledge there's like different tiers it's like one dollar a month two dollars a
00:58:24.660 month five dollars a month and the one and two dollar a month people and the five dollar a month
00:58:28.940 people everybody gets access to episodes of vulgar history a few days early so that's a special treat
00:58:35.080 for you people at the five dollar a month tier they get the extra even when i'm on hiatus i do
00:58:40.640 at least one extra mini episode per month called so this asshole where i talk about various men and
00:58:47.080 the people in the patreon vote for which men they want to hear me talk about the one i did last
00:58:52.760 month was philip the first of spain and it ended up being like an hour and a half long because there
00:58:58.280 was a lot to say about him so i say mini episode but they're also sometimes very long anyway um
00:59:05.300 in the teespring store for which there is a link in the show notes so there's a link from my
00:59:10.840 instagram i wanted to mention that there is new ish tits out merch like literally shirts and
00:59:17.500 things that say tits out on them and i wanted to mention that there's some discount codes one can
00:59:24.040 use so if you're in the u.s you can use code tits out for free shipping or if you're not in the u.s
00:59:30.040 you can use the code tits out 10 for 10 off so you can check that out and what else on instagram
00:59:40.180 i'm at vulgar history pod that seems to be where i'm spending more of my time than on twitter
00:59:44.900 but i still love you there on twitter where i'm at vulgar history and i'm really excited you know
00:59:53.380 is this a season like i was just going to do a super special about fred again but it's turned
00:59:57.320 into three episodes so i feel like is this a season of the podcast i don't know back around
01:00:04.500 and find out so mask on tits out talk to you next time
01:00:23.380 The war is over and both sides lost. 0.99
01:00:32.660 Kingdoms were reduced to cinders and armies scattered like bones in the dust.
01:00:37.680 Now the survivors claw to what's left of a broken world,
01:00:42.320 praying the darkness chooses someone else tonight.
01:00:45.600 But in the shadow dark, the darkness always wins.
01:00:49.300 this is old school adventuring
01:00:51.740 at it's most cruel
01:00:53.080 your torch ticks down in real time
01:00:55.520 and when that flame dies
01:00:56.880 something else rises to finish the job
01:00:59.180 this is a brutal rules light nightmare
01:01:01.460 with a story that emerges organically
01:01:04.160 based on the decisions that the characters make
01:01:06.780 this is what it felt like to play RPGs in the 80s
01:01:09.220 and man, it is so good to be back
