00:00:00.000 I am very excited for my Aaron shock interlude. There's just a lot of like awful gay politicians 1.00
00:00:06.700 in varying levels of the closet that I've been excited to to talk about. And I'm ready to go 1.00
00:00:11.640 scorched earth. Oh, for a second, I thought that was your cat. I was like, wow, the cat is also
00:00:20.000 ready to go scorched earth. They don't want us to make this episode. Big closet is scared.
00:00:30.000 Hello, hello. I'm Matt Bernstein. And welcome to A Bit Fruity. Oh, I said that in the wrong order.
00:00:37.920 Wait. Hello, hello. And welcome back to A Bit Fruity. I'm Matt Bernstein. And welcome back to
00:00:43.900 the show. I'm so happy you're here. I knew that sounded weird. On June 4th, 2015, Taylor Snyder
00:00:51.040 traveled to Washington, D.C. Taylor was a 24-year-old transgender sex worker going by the name 0.99
00:00:58.540 Allison. And when she traveled, she worked. So she put up a personal ad on Eros, a website for 0.88
00:01:06.200 escorts, notifying potential DC-based clients of her availability. Three days later, on June 7th,
00:01:14.080 she received a text from a Google voice number. Hello, Allison. Are you available to Toadie?
00:01:22.020 Today, but it's spelled Toadie. Interested in an appointment for this afternoon, if possible?
00:01:27.460 Yes, of course. I'll be in DuPont Circle closer to noon. I'm flying in from Atlanta and land in
00:01:32.900 around 10 a.m. Do you have a specific time in mind? When is the soonest you'll be available?
00:01:37.840 Would 1.30-2 work with you just so I can check it and freshen up? Sorry, I realized I should
00:01:42.580 do the accent. That works. Donation? I request $400 minimum for my time. Does that work with
00:01:49.280 you? It does. Are you more of a top or a bottom? I am a bottom. I am 100% versatile. Please refrain
00:01:56.620 from speaking explicit over the phone
00:01:58.960 until we get acquainted, please.
00:02:00.880 Okay, sorry.
00:02:02.620 2 p.m. should work fine.
00:02:04.220 Do you think you'd be able to send me a photo of yourself?
00:02:06.940 I can send one back, smiley face.
00:02:09.020 No, I am very discreet.
00:02:11.700 No pictures, but I am legit.
00:02:13.860 I can give a reference if you'd like.
00:02:15.920 It's not necessary.
00:02:16.960 I don't like dealing with other advertisers.
00:02:19.460 Thank you, though.
00:02:20.740 Washington Hilton, 1919 Connecticut Avenue,
00:02:23.100 Northwest, Washington, D.C., 20009.
00:02:26.620 that is where I'm staying. Very close to where I'm at. Perfect. So should I expect you at two?
00:02:33.040 Could you at least describe what you look like? Older white male, salt and pepper hair,
00:02:37.880 stocky build. No problem with me, winky face. Okay, give me a call around 145-ish if you can
00:02:44.380 just let me know you're here. When you arrive, call me and I'll tell you my details. Sounds good
00:02:49.420 to me. See you soon, beautiful. Taylor and her client met at the hotel she was staying at,
00:02:55.220 the Hilton and DuPont circle. They had sex, he paid her $400, and nothing about it seemed out
00:03:02.080 of the ordinary. Older white men in suits do this sort of thing all the time, after all. 0.72
00:03:07.760 But a month or so later, Taylor traveled up from D.C. to New York City. She was sitting at a bar
00:03:13.460 with her girlfriend when she looked up at one of the TVs. And there, on national news, was her
00:03:19.240 client. He was running for president on the Republican Party line. His name was Lindsey
00:03:26.080 Graham. All right. So Lindsey Graham just died. While we've all been waiting with bated breath
00:03:35.940 to learn the state of Mitch McConnell, who has not been seen in 38 days as of this recording,
00:03:42.280 Lindsey's death just kind of came out of nowhere. I got up to pee around 4 a.m. on July 12th,
00:03:48.240 tapped my phone when getting back into bed. Not a good habit, I know. And bam, breaking news.
00:03:54.400 Lindsey Graham, senator from South Carolina, dies at 71. Huh. Lindsey Graham will be remembered for
00:04:01.800 a lot of things, none of them good. His support for the invasion of Iraq, his support for a 0.83
00:04:06.920 permanent U.S. presence in Afghanistan, his support for the occupation of Palestine, his opposition
00:04:12.100 to every human and civil rights initiative in his lifetime. And of course, his pronunciation of
00:04:18.460 Israel. Israel. Israel is not the bad guy. They're the good guy. Israel is in a fight for their
00:04:26.640 lives. Let me tell you about genocide. If Israel wanted to commit genocide, they could. Israel is
00:04:33.800 our friend. If America pulls the plug on Israel, God will pull the plug on us. We're in a religious
00:04:40.920 war here i am with israel do whatever the hell you have to do to defend yourself level the place
00:04:46.560 one of the last things i remember him saying was i will be with israel till my dying day
00:04:52.400 forget it i'm not with you i'm with israel i will be with israel to our dying day yeah well i guess 0.63
00:04:58.720 he was but for queer people lindsey graham was a unique source of torment lindsey bolstered every 0.55
00:05:07.780 anti-LGBT cause he could, while many of us have known for decades of his habitual hiring of queer 0.79
00:05:14.520 sex workers. Today, I want to do a sort of post-mortem psychosexual analysis of Lindsey Graham, 0.83
00:05:21.420 someone who lived and died in the closet while inflicting as much pain on the world as possible.
00:05:27.520 And that doesn't sound that fun, and it's not, but as we do on this podcast, we'll find a way
00:05:32.340 to make it worth your while, I hope, and I'm so excited today to be joined by the one and only
00:05:37.660 my friend, host of the In Bed with the Right podcast, Moira Donegan. Welcome back to the
00:05:43.700 show. It's been a minute. Thank you so much for having me, Matt. I'm excited to dig in with you
00:05:48.360 to this. I'm excited. We have a lot to talk about today, but I mean, you as part of your job do
00:05:57.820 essentially psychosexual analysis of right-wing figures in politics. And I wonder how you're
00:06:04.360 feeling right now? You know, Lindsey Graham, as a sort of closeted or somewhat pretextually
00:06:13.760 closeted conservative, is actually part of a pretty long lineage, right, of gay conservatives.
00:06:22.200 Gay men in particular, although increasingly also gay women. Shout out Barry Weiss. Shout out Barry
00:06:27.760 wise um you know gay people play a prominent role on the american right the way they play a prominent
00:06:35.100 role in all sections of american life right but with the graham example in particular you really
00:06:42.360 see the contradiction of the closet coming into play right you see the role of open secrets and
00:06:50.540 plausible deniability and the way who knows what and who gets to say what they know becomes
00:06:57.540 in its own sense, a source of power and a way to exercise power and domination over others. 0.90
00:07:04.520 And in that sense, I think we could compare Lindsey Graham pretty easily to the granddaddy 0.86
00:07:11.080 of gay conservatives, one Mr. Roy Cohn. Matt, what do you know about Roy Cohn?
00:07:18.180 Oh my God. You're what do you know about this-ing to me on my podcast?
00:07:24.980 This is my job.
00:07:27.540 Oh, my God. Well, I mean, I think he's somebody either you are obsessed with him like I am or you've never heard of him ever.
00:07:36.800 You know, it's like it could go either way.
00:07:39.960 Exactly. I'm so excited you brought this up because this is exactly where I wanted to start.
00:07:45.400 Before we can get into Lindsey Graham, I feel. Lindsey Graham, who spent, you know, the last decade of his life worshipping Trump and doing everything he could to be on Donald Trump's good side.
00:08:00.200 It's interesting because Donald Trump is in some ways sandwiched between various powerful gay men, both that follow him and that he followed.
00:08:10.620 And not enough people know that Donald Trump's mentor and the reason that Donald Trump is the way that he is and operates the way that he operates is because of one of those gay men named Roy Cohn.
00:08:24.920 Roy Cohn, and here's where I'm going to let you fill in a lot of the blanks, but he was a lawyer in I think like the 50s to the 70s. He was responsible for the execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg in a trial that most legal experts say now was marred by Roy's prosecutorial misconduct because he wanted that couple dead. And he succeeded in that.
00:08:50.900 And I know that he he was a man of many secrets, secrets that he lived and died by.
00:08:56.260 And I also think that in many ways, though Roy was a pitiful figure that you're about to explain, I think Lindsay wishes he could have had some of the things that Roy had.
00:09:06.840 I think that's a really great way to frame it.
00:09:09.900 The simple way to talk about what Roy Cohn did was to say that he was a lawyer.
00:09:14.980 Right. But saying that Roy Cohn was a lawyer is a little like saying that the pope is a Catholic.
00:09:19.620 It's like, well, yes. However, it goes well beyond that. Yeah. Roy Cohn began his career as a very young prosecutor. I think he was like 25, like a baby, gunning to kill Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a couple who are convicted of spying for the Soviet Union.
00:09:38.640 And, you know, we look at Lindsey Graham, who is famous for being a war hawk who really came into his own as a neoconservative, like military interventionist during the war on terror era.
00:09:51.840 Roy Cohn was an anti-communist agitator and persecutor of people on the political left from the Cold War era.
00:10:00.940 Right. So after he made his name, securing the electric chair for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, including some really egregious misconduct and, you know, subsequent revelations have suggested that he actually knew that Ethel was innocent of everything he was accusing her of or much of what he was accusing her of and made sure that she got the death penalty anyway.
00:10:22.120 nasty guy he goes on to work for joseph mccarthy a senator on an anti-communist
00:10:30.640 mission also by the way a widely alleged closeted homosexual so he becomes the architect of the 0.98
00:10:39.760 mccarthy hearings dragging people in front of the senate committee to interrogate them 0.50
00:10:48.180 about their alleged communist sympathies.
00:10:50.940 And this also extends, by the way,
00:10:53.440 from the Red Scare to what we now colloquially refer to
00:10:56.680 as the Lavender Scare,
00:10:58.520 where people working, particularly in the State Department,
00:11:01.100 who are suspected of being gay,
00:11:03.120 were dragged in front of these committees
00:11:05.140 and interrogated about their personal lives.
00:11:08.160 If you, my dear listener, have not seen fellow travelers
00:11:11.280 featuring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey,
00:11:13.620 it is a very fascinating representation
00:11:17.500 of this period in american politics also extremely sexy you're like the third person who's told me
00:11:23.000 to watch fellow travelers i have to you haven't that was like manufactured in a lab for you 0.87
00:11:27.340 well i mean not really because it it is kind of manufactured in a lab for like a gay male 0.68
00:11:33.020 version of you which i guess in some ways is me my brother out there my twin he's somewhere in 0.64
00:11:39.940 the ether. But, you know, Roy Cohn goes on to be a lawyer, but really a power broker doing favors.
00:11:48.080 He's a fixer. And he is also all but openly gay. And this goes all the way back to when he was 0.98
00:11:56.460 working for Joseph McCarthy. Right. He went at one point on a tour of American embassies in Europe
00:12:03.720 to get subversive books out of their libraries. And he took his boyfriend with them. And they
00:12:09.160 They had like a little like trip to Italy and then they would, you know, purge all the seditious books. 0.57
00:12:14.300 Like a really like twisted sex weekend, right? 0.88
00:12:17.360 Like the worst couple you know.
00:12:19.160 And he, you know, wasn't exactly in the closet.
00:12:23.480 People talk about going over to Roy Cohn's like townhouse in Manhattan in the 1970s.
00:12:30.460 And it being full of very beautiful young men in various states of undress.
00:12:36.920 He would have orgies on his yacht that people just like knew about. And fascinatingly, the yacht was called, because boats have names, it was called the Defiance.
00:12:46.500 Oh, that's funny. Yeah.
00:12:47.780 Which I think is so amazing because he was really defying the closet.
00:12:51.880 You know, so I think what's really interesting about the closet is that we can historicize it and it functioned this way for a lot of people, still does function this way for a lot of people, as a state of like defensiveness and fear.
00:13:04.600 I think for Roy Cohn, that's not really true. Eventually, he had enough money, enough power, enough ability to strike fear into people that the closet, such as it was, became just an extension of his own power. He was living, for all intents and purposes, an openly gay life. But he had this pretext of plausible deniability, which functionally amounted to, I dare you to say something.
00:13:31.640 Yeah.
00:13:32.340 You know?
00:13:32.620 You guys on In Bed with the Right did an amazing series of episodes on Roy Cohn that I think people should go listen to if they are interested in learning more about this wicked, wicked man.
00:13:43.340 But I think that is like one of the single most interesting takeaways about his life to me. 0.99
00:13:48.860 His philosophy was that gay men are weak and effeminate. 0.99
00:13:52.800 I am strong and powerful. 0.99
00:13:54.740 Therefore, I'm not a gay man. 0.99
00:13:56.880 I'm just someone who occasionally has sex with men. 0.90
00:13:59.800 And after he died, his close associate, Roger Stone, said, quote, Roy Cohn was not gay. 1.00
00:14:07.800 He was a man who liked having sex with men. 0.99
00:14:10.700 That was something Roger Stone said after Roy Cohn died. 0.96
00:14:13.820 I think it really does get to the contradiction that you're pointing to, right?
00:14:18.540 Like, if being gay is being in a subordinate position, that is not something Roy Cohn was doing.
00:14:24.680 You define gay in sort of homophobic, patriarchal, bigoted terms, and you accept that, then what you're doing is not being gay. 0.98
00:14:34.460 What you're doing is having a sex life. 0.87
00:14:36.380 However, I think it's important for our dear listeners to know Roy Cohn died in 1986 of AIDS.
00:14:43.640 Yeah. 0.99
00:14:44.160 So you can define yourself outside of the gay community. 1.00
00:14:49.880 You can say, those people are not my people. 1.00
00:14:53.400 Those people are not my equals.
00:14:54.680 those people are not my peers, those people are not my comrades, right? But the political
00:14:58.940 structures that are marginalizing those people can come for you too. You don't actually just
00:15:04.260 get to sort of define your way out of that. Yeah. I feel like Lindsey Graham wished he could have
00:15:10.440 had some of what Roy Cohn had. I think Lindsey Graham in his ideal world could have muscled his
00:15:17.960 way through all these rumors, through all the allegations, been like walking around with his
00:15:23.280 sort of sex workers in tow so powerful that it's just like I dare you to say something I dare you
00:15:29.100 to challenge me on this but he never quite got there yeah you know Roy Cohn seemed often to be
00:15:34.860 having fun with the closet right if he made the closet a extension of his own power you could
00:15:42.600 sometimes see him delighting in it I don't think you have to like give Roy Cohn any credit as a
00:15:47.960 person certainly not absolve anything you don't have to hand it to him but like he was funny and
00:15:55.860 he was clearly sort of enjoying a little bit his own capacity to like create and transcend scandal
00:16:04.060 right lindsey graham never had fun with a closet he got horribly uncomfortable like visibly
00:16:12.200 uncomfortable it's like nails on chalkboard just watching him when he was asked about this and he
00:16:17.740 you know, denied it for most of his life. He never really denied it in a way that seemed like it had
00:16:25.740 that wink that Roy Cohn always had. He was always running and he ran straight into the grave. So
00:16:31.940 Lindsey Graham was 31 and serving in the military when Roy Cohn died in 1986. Let's talk about
00:16:39.820 Lindsey Graham. He was born on July 9th, 1955 in Central, South Carolina. This town is called
00:16:46.820 central kind of confusing central south carolina his dad fj and mom millie graham owned a restaurant
00:16:54.340 and bar that the family lived behind wait do you know what it was called no it was called the
00:17:00.420 sanitary cafe that's a deeply unappealing name for a restaurant hey do you want to go hang out
00:17:08.080 at sanitary like it makes you think like okay has the health inspector actually been in there
00:17:15.000 because you guys are protesting a little too much.
00:17:18.100 The name of my bar is making people ask questions
00:17:21.460 answered by the name of my bar.
00:17:24.620 You know, fascinatingly,
00:17:26.480 but maybe not for scholars of history, 1.00
00:17:28.580 the business did not allow Black people
00:17:30.580 to drink at the bar.
00:17:32.560 And when Lizzie has explained this,
00:17:34.460 she's just been like, well, it was the time.
00:17:37.880 But he makes a point of being like, 0.94
00:17:39.500 but my dad really didn't like those racist white people. 0.95
00:17:41.960 But also we did not allow Black people, 0.98
00:17:44.400 if they ordered drinks, they had to drink them on the sidewalk. I inserted here a picture for us to 1.00
00:17:50.900 briefly gawk at of Lindsey Graham as a teenager standing with his family in the woods. He's
00:17:58.540 wearing his very preppy outfit, hands on hips. And you know, we gays tend to say that there's
00:18:05.900 always those like childhood photos that you can look at and be like, yeah, it was always there.
00:18:10.340 And I enjoyed coming across this one because this was one for Lindsey Graham where I'm like,
00:18:14.400 Huh. You had that queen in you. 1.00
00:18:16.740 He does. He's got his hip a little bit cocked.
00:18:19.780 He's wearing, I think those are pinkish pants.
00:18:22.960 I don't think it's just like the tone of the photograph.
00:18:26.200 I think those are pink pants.
00:18:27.480 It's the hands on the hips for me.
00:18:29.680 And just sort of staring down the world with a sassiness, I would call it.
00:18:35.080 Lindsay was the first in his family to attend college where he joined ROTC, ROTC,
00:18:40.420 which is a college military training program that we have here in the great United States.
00:18:45.960 Sarcasm.
00:18:46.960 Both of Lindsey Graham's parents died within 15 months of each other while Lindsey was
00:18:53.000 at college, making him the legal guardian of his little sister, who is now, by the way,
00:18:59.020 assuming Lindsey's role in the Senate in the wake of his death, despite no democratic process,
00:19:04.920 and also she's never held political office in her life.
00:19:07.300 So I don't know how it works in this country that it's just like, well, my sister takes my like, OK, his sister has said, quote, Lindsay's kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one.
00:19:21.100 Lindsay Graham got his law degree in 1981.
00:19:25.100 He entered the Air Force in 1982 at age 27.
00:19:29.080 He served in active duty for five years, but was never a combatant.
00:19:33.000 Lindsey Graham, I think, he derives a lot of his self-mythologized masculinity and hardness
00:19:39.800 to all of his time in the military. But he was never a combatant, just to be clear. He was then
00:19:45.540 in the South Carolina Air National Guard for six years, then joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve in
00:19:53.440 1995, which he was in for like 20 years. Interestingly, he joined the Air Force Reserve
00:19:59.840 The year after Don't Ask, Don't Tell was passed. Do you want to talk a little bit about Don't Ask, Don't Tell and Lindsey Graham?
00:20:06.680 Yeah. So Don't Ask, Don't Tell was, if you can believe it, supposed to be a pro-gay intervention that prohibited gay people from being out in the military, but also prohibited the military from asking troops if they were gay.
00:20:29.360 So it used to be before Don't Ask, Don't Tell was passed as an initiative in the first Bill Clinton administration.
00:20:36.740 It used to be that when you signed up to join the military, they asked, are you now or have you ever been homosexual?
00:20:44.020 I believe was the phrasing. And you couldn't be like, oh, a little bit in college, you know, like it was supposed to be disqualifying.
00:20:50.700 don't ask don't tell removed that question but did not remove the requirement that gay people
00:20:58.540 in the military be discharged dishonorably and excluded from veterans benefits so when he
00:21:06.000 actually originally enlisted in the air force in 1982 he would have been asked they would have
00:21:13.420 said are you a homosexual and presumably he said no because he did serve for five years in the air
00:21:20.360 force proper and i think it's interesting that you note matt that he was not like a soldier he
00:21:26.520 was not a pilot he was not a marine he was what's called a jag or judge advocate general which is
00:21:33.580 basically a lawyer within the military's own justice system so you know he had gone to law
00:21:39.900 school by that point he enlisted at an officer level because he'd been in rotc so he was never
00:21:45.960 like a grunt or a private and he you know is basically a lawyer within the military justice
00:21:52.400 systems and he like writes memos for you know much of his military career about stuff that
00:21:58.560 it's legal for the military to do but by the late 80s he's not really doing it anymore yeah he
00:22:06.460 switches to the reserve which is a much lower commitment it's not full-time famously it's
00:22:12.240 supposed to be like one weekend a month. But he is continually promoted within the U.S. Air Force
00:22:19.460 Reserve because the military brass and his office first in the House and then later in the Senate
00:22:28.040 really like having him do photo ops. So for years and years, they'll fly him to military bases in
00:22:36.200 Afghanistan, in Iraq, in wherever, and they'll put him in a uniform and they'll have him pose
00:22:42.080 with the people there who are actually doing the work and he just accumulates promotions and when
00:22:47.020 he formally retired he was in fact entitled to a military pension even though he had not done
00:22:52.340 significant military work in like literal decades it's so bizarre like how much of the u.s military
00:22:58.920 industrial complex is held up by like theater oh yeah it's a total it was a total graft for him it
00:23:04.340 was nuts in the mid-90s lindsey graham served one two-year term in the south carolina state 0.59
00:23:11.160 House of Representatives. This was his first job in office. And the first bill he ever tried to
00:23:17.080 pass in his political career, in his life, was a ban on gays and lesbians from the South Carolina
00:23:23.600 Army National Guard. Fascinatingly, not from the South Carolina Air Force National Guard,
00:23:31.600 which was what he was in. So I don't know. A part of me wonders if he was like,
00:23:36.620 I need to get the stink off me, but like over there, you know.
00:23:39.340 Don't look over there. Don't pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Yeah.
00:23:44.060 What a strange way to walk into a political career just to be like, 0.85
00:23:48.820 ban gays and lesbians in this like specific area of the state military. 0.61
00:23:53.280 It's like specifically his life too, right? Like I think we're taking the liberty of assuming with,
00:23:59.540 I would say pretty ample evidence that this is a gay man. It's also a man who's spending a lot 0.86
00:24:05.340 of time in South Carolina in the military right it's the two parts of his life and he is like oh
00:24:11.820 they will never meet thank you very much yeah in 1994 Lindsay sets his sights on higher power
00:24:19.940 looking to fill the U.S. House seat for South Carolina's third congressional district he won
00:24:25.960 that election and went on to serve four consecutive two-year terms in the seat until 2002 at which
00:24:34.060 point he eyed the senate by the way when he first joined the senate he made a promise that he would
00:24:40.900 only serve two of those six-year senate terms at the time of his death he had just won the
00:24:48.460 primary election for his fifth term yeah which i wish i could say that was a problem unique to 0.97
00:24:54.620 lindsey graham but all of them are like i'm not gonna hold on to power for 45 000 fucking years 0.95
00:25:01.160 and then guess what? They do. We need term limits yesterday. But I want to touch briefly on 0.99
00:25:08.420 Lindsey Graham's record on LGBTQ issues while in office, because this is obviously the theme of
00:25:15.720 today's episode. While he was in the House of Representatives, one of his early fights in US
00:25:22.420 Congress, also anti-gay, was against the legalization of gay marriage. In 1996, he supported
00:25:29.260 DOMA or the Defense of Marriage Act, which federally defined marriage exclusively as a union
00:25:35.020 between one man and one woman. As a senator, Lindsay fought for a constitutional amendment
00:25:43.080 that would ban gay marriage. He was very desperate to get ahead of the idea that gay marriage would 0.99
00:25:50.000 one day become legalized, which it did for now. And he was really gunning for a literal 0.93
00:25:57.340 constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman. He
00:26:02.460 co-sponsored such an amendment. He voted to ban gay parents from adopting children. He opposed 1.00
00:26:08.600 repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell in 2010. He was still technically in the reserves at that point.
00:26:13.980 You know, he loves his closet. He voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act in 2013,
00:26:21.260 which would have protected LGBTQ people from employment discrimination based on sexual
00:26:29.020 orientation and gender. He defended state level bans on gender affirming medical care for trans
00:26:34.500 people and more recently co-sponsored a bill that aimed to strip grade schools and colleges
00:26:40.460 of public funding if they allowed trans athletes to compete with their peers. And I don't mean to
00:26:49.080 be tedious by outlining all of these points of someone's political career, but Lindsey Graham
00:26:56.440 caused so much pain to so many people, like a really, really great amount of pain to more people
00:27:04.140 than I think the brain can fathom, like such a great amount of suffering. And that's just in the
00:27:13.180 realm of lgbtq people lindsey graham is of course best known for being a war hawk and for as i said 1.00
00:27:19.780 at the beginning being in favor of all of these various military invasions all of which have
00:27:24.580 failed spectacularly by the way we'll get into this more later but i don't know i find him to
00:27:30.460 be like just like such a waste of life because all he did was suffer privately and make other
00:27:36.940 people suffer sorry i'm gonna cut this i'm gonna we'll get we'll get back to it at the end yeah
00:27:41.920 you're onto something here. I think there's something about the closet and like dying in
00:27:46.680 the closet that can feel very sad, right? Yeah. It can be like, oh, he never, he never accepted
00:27:52.360 himself. He never came to terms with this truth about himself. Right. And for me, that's really
00:27:57.860 complicated by how much dignity harm and exclusion and really material harm, like money and violence
00:28:06.040 that he inflicted on other people who were struggling with the same problem.
00:28:12.120 It would be one thing if he was only cruel to himself, but he really wasn't.
00:28:19.160 I would like to give a shout out to the sponsor of today's episode, Incogni.
00:28:24.860 I admittedly used to kind of roll my eyes at people who were overly serious
00:28:31.800 or what I perceived as overly serious about online privacy and this is just one of those things that
00:28:39.180 I have changed my views on as time has gone on and I've learned more about how the internet
00:28:45.720 functions and how surveillance functions how a lot of things function. Now much more so than I used
00:28:51.220 to I try to do things that keep my data a little bit more protected as someone who is online all
00:28:58.960 the time. And Incogni is one great way to do just that. If you don't know, there are thousands of
00:29:05.600 companies online that are buying, trading, selling, aggregating your personal data. And these are
00:29:12.000 called data brokers. This is information you've entered online at some point or another. Things
00:29:17.660 like your name, your address, your date of birth, your education, your shopping habits, your
00:29:22.720 employment now the thing is you have the legal right to request that data brokers get rid of
00:29:29.780 your information that they delete it from their systems but the problem is it would take a really
00:29:34.880 really really long time for you to personally track all of these companies down and do it yourself
00:29:40.400 luckily there's incogni incogni takes care of the messy work for you automatically by reaching out
00:29:48.040 to all of these different data brokers on your behalf making sure they get rid of your information
00:29:53.840 and dealing with their pesky objections. And with Incogni's custom removal feature which is on the
00:30:00.620 unlimited plan and the family unlimited plan you can point to any like people search website where
00:30:07.320 your private information is publicly visible and one of Incogni's privacy care agents will take
00:30:13.620 care of it for you. If getting your information out of the hands of data brokers is something
00:30:18.040 that sounds nice to you, then maybe try out Incogni. You can get 60% off a new plan right
00:30:25.180 now at incogni.com slash fruity. That is 60% off at incogni.com slash fruity. And now let's get
00:30:34.480 back to it. You have devoted a lot of your work to abortion rights, and I know he has a wild 0.96
00:30:45.040 record on abortion that I would be remiss to not let you expand on before we continue.
00:30:51.120 In the grand tradition of gender conservatives, Lindsey Graham's hostility towards queer and
00:30:59.900 trans people has been paired with a hostility for the rights of like cis women in the case of
00:31:07.440 abortion he has been at the forefront of pushing bills that would create and have created federal
00:31:16.100 precedent for the concept of fetal personhood which would if recognized by the court ban abortion
00:31:23.480 nationwide and really restrict the freedom of cis women and anybody assigned female at birth
00:31:29.420 with the capacity to give birth, right, even those who are not pregnant. So he was at the
00:31:34.800 forefront of a bill that made it a federal crime to injure a fetus that sort of doubles the crime
00:31:45.560 of violence or injury committed against a pregnant person. If you are convicted under this law of
00:31:53.660 violence against a pregnant person that injures their fetus, the law does not construe that
00:31:59.260 as a violation of the pregnant person, right?
00:32:01.600 The law does not construe that person
00:32:03.820 to be especially vulnerable
00:32:06.040 or to have a property interest
00:32:08.420 or a dignity interest in their pregnancy
00:32:11.320 that magnifies their vulnerability.
00:32:14.120 It construes the fetus as a separate person
00:32:16.840 who is also injured unto themselves.
00:32:18.400 That grants a fetus federally recognized rights,
00:32:23.340 which is a step towards making them
00:32:25.920 a federally recognized person. 1.00
00:32:28.220 Lindsey Graham also did this like really slimy shit in the wake of the Dobbs versus Jackson women's health decision in 2022, which overturned Roe v. Wade. 0.98
00:32:39.260 So the Dobbs decision overturned Roe, saying there is no federal constitutional right to an abortion and states can ban abortion at will. 0.99
00:32:47.880 This caused chaos.
00:32:49.680 It continues to create public health and women's rights and civil rights crises across the country. 0.90
00:32:56.220 It has caused people to die. It has caused people to lose their grip on their dreams and lose control over their bodies. Lindsey Graham came in and he says, I have a solution that's going to bring the whole country into accord.
00:33:10.580 and his solution which he described as a national standard was in fact a national abortion ban
00:33:17.920 he said i want to make it so that no abortions can be performed in the united states after 15
00:33:26.440 weeks of gestation and he pitched this as this is something that everybody across the aisle
00:33:31.620 can get behind because it creates a national standard implying falsely that the bill he was
00:33:38.180 proposing would prohibit states from banning abortion before 15 weeks. In fact, it would not.
00:33:44.600 It would prohibit states from allowing abortion after 15 weeks. So he not only proposed limiting
00:33:51.180 the rights of women and assigned female people across the country in ways that would harm their
00:33:57.280 dignity and their health and create some particularly tragic circumstances for people
00:34:01.860 with late-term pregnancy complications.
00:34:04.560 But he pitched this.
00:34:06.000 He had the gall to pitch this
00:34:08.980 as a compromise measure
00:34:11.560 that would restore peace and dignity. 1.00
00:34:14.060 And I find that shit so slimy. 1.00
00:34:16.220 Yeah, that was beautifully put. 1.00
00:34:19.380 And the pain that Lindsey Graham has caused 1.00
00:34:21.740 and unleashed on this planet knows no bounds.
00:34:24.800 And with that being considered,
00:34:26.660 should we have a little fun?
00:34:29.020 Should we have a little good old tabloid fun?
00:34:31.860 Uh, Lindsay's entire career as a senator has been peppered with rumors about his sexuality
00:34:38.520 and bachelor status. What we know about his relationships is limited. From his 2015 memoir,
00:34:46.540 aptly titled My Story, he wrote, I've never been married. Sorry. I've never been married.
00:34:53.520 I guess I attribute that to timing, too. The opportunity never presented itself
00:35:01.040 at the right time, or I never found time to meet the right girl, or the right girl was smart enough
00:35:07.260 not to have time for me. Every single time that Lindsey Graham sort of waves away these rumors,
00:35:14.860 I feel myself right back in the backseat of my mom's car when she's like picking me up from school 0.93
00:35:24.600 and asking me if there's any girls at school that I'm interested in. And I have to find some way
00:35:30.080 to be like you know the classic was like i'm just focusing on school i don't know if you ever pulled
00:35:34.680 that one but i would always be like i'm focusing on school or i'm just too busy or i'm gonna and
00:35:40.340 it's like i'm 11 what am i too busy doing but i was too busy for girls it's very familiar to me
00:35:46.240 it's actually perhaps the most i can relate to lindsey graham on yeah he's so uncomfortable
00:35:50.420 right yeah like you can imagine a different politician a roy cone writing that sentence
00:35:57.180 and having fun with it you know he's not having fun he's not playing he's not winking he's not
00:36:05.100 breaking the fourth wall but he's also not doing anything that indicates to me a sense of comfort
00:36:11.380 which you can you could be in the closet and not hate the fact that you're gay and i i'm reading
00:36:18.840 that and i'm like oh he really hates this about himself he has a few stories that he tells about
00:36:24.260 women that he has allegedly dated did they live in canada or go to another school they go to another
00:36:30.760 school george glass he says that he had a girlfriend in law school named debbie
00:36:41.380 that he dated a military officer named carol and that he dated a flight attendant named sylvia
00:36:49.220 i love this none of these women have ever gotten last names sylvia she's a flight attendant she's
00:36:56.620 at a different airline it's almost like a mad libs it's like boomer woman name 0.99
00:37:01.540 exactly yeah exactly but you know there have been many memorable confrontations between lindsey and 0.92
00:37:12.860 the public on this issue coming from both sides of the political aisle notably from the left 0.98
00:37:18.400 people have long sought to highlight his hypocrisy in being a gay, anti-gay activist. 0.98
00:37:25.360 And from the right, well, people want to know if he's gay because they don't like it. 0.93
00:37:30.680 There's also been a long sort of conspiratorial, like national security accusation that you might
00:37:38.620 be familiar with made that like Lindsey Graham's allegiance to Israel or like any other foreign
00:37:44.300 nation, or sometimes from the right, they'll say like, you're willing to compromise with Democrats 0.95
00:37:48.520 is because these different people and entities could have like gay sexual blackmail on him, 0.99
00:37:55.580 which like, I don't know. To me, it's a little far fetched. Like a lot of people, especially 0.99
00:38:01.920 in the new like Groyper adjacent right are like Lindsey Graham is devoted to Israel because 0.88
00:38:10.220 Massad has has sexual blackmail on him and they know that he's gay and I'm kind of just like guys
00:38:15.180 I think he's a Christian Zionist there's a lot of them yeah and also this is like this gets into 0.89
00:38:20.680 something that we'll talk more about but it's like this conspiracy that like we are weakened 0.99
00:38:27.100 in national security by like a cabal of closeted gay men is such a convenient way to avoid real
00:38:36.100 topics like oligarchy and capitalism and these like actual allegiances that people have to power 0.97
00:38:42.040 yeah i mean if massad is like blackmailing lindsey graham for being gay then like how
00:38:47.420 are they what are they blackmailing all the other republican senators with you know what i mean yeah
00:38:51.160 right there's so many people doing this same thing that the particularities of this guy is
00:38:58.520 like personal life being uh at the core of the explanation for it just seems like a bit of a
00:39:03.800 stretch i will say i think like the closet makes straight people nervous because it it reads as
00:39:12.420 dishonesty it doesn't read as like this person is ashamed this person is suffering this person
00:39:18.020 is protecting themselves it reads as this person's lying to you and what else might they be lying
00:39:24.280 about uh and that is also i think a moral pretext for homophobia and just like the visceral
00:39:33.500 disgust that sometimes people feel at like gay sex and gay sexuality right yeah they're like oh 0.71
00:39:38.400 it's not that i'm like imagining lindsey graham doing butt stuff or whatever that like really 0.97
00:39:44.000 creeps me out it's that he's lying right it also becomes a way like i'm not i'm not mad that you
00:39:48.480 cheated i'm mad that you lied about it's like girl you're kind of mad that he cheated you know
00:39:51.260 what i mean it's like this pretext where people who don't want to just cop to being grossed out 0.69
00:39:56.820 by gay people can also be like well it's that he's covering it up it's that he's living a double life
00:40:01.180 this was like core to the pretext in the lavender scare as advanced by people like roy cone and
00:40:08.660 other one of lindsey graham's like you know members of his lineage right this notion that 0.76
00:40:12.640 you can't have gay people in the state department or in the civil service because they're liable to 0.71
00:40:19.060 blackmail and it's like well if you guys were a little nicer to gay people the blackmail wouldn't 0.95
00:40:23.760 have any effect right because everybody would be out of the closet 100 really well said i want to
00:40:29.160 walk through a timeline of some of these Lindsey Graham rumors and confrontations and glean from
00:40:36.480 them what we may. So in 2009, amidst confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor,
00:40:44.400 Lindsey Graham probed her on anonymous rumors that she had poor temperament. And as he left
00:40:52.200 the hearings, there was a blogger named Mike Stark who walked up to Lindsey Graham and said,
00:40:58.160 My name's Mike Stark. I'm with the Cook It Dope. Okay. So I do this video blog thing. Okay. Remember on the hearings with Justice Sotomayor, you had asked about a lot of the rumors you had heard about her temperament. And you said you had read, you know, these things were rumored on the internet all over the place. You're aware of a lot of anonymous comments made by people that may be afraid of a powerful senator from South Carolina regarding your sexuality.
00:41:24.160 so do you have to answer questions about that i mean i know a lot of people from the christian
00:41:29.120 right yeah elect senators from south carolina this is different to me again he's squirming
00:41:34.900 yeah it doesn't seem to be something he ever found a line on yeah even though it was a part
00:41:41.640 of his career for like decades what's funny to me about this is it's that video is from 2009 and
00:41:48.220 it's like filmed on a calculator this exact thing happened as he was leaving a recent congressional
00:41:55.520 meeting like a couple months if that before he died where someone went up to him and was just
00:42:01.060 like like why don't you just come out of the closet already like something like that and he 0.76
00:42:04.840 to your point he never found a line on it hey lindsey why don't you just admit that you're gay 0.98
00:42:08.800 and then people won't blackmail you anymore but lindsey graham was seen by some republicans 0.99
00:42:15.460 during the Obama years as being too willing to work with the Democrats in power. You know, 0.97
00:42:21.100 like I said, a lot of the further right Republicans attributed that to Democrats having like gay 0.97
00:42:26.360 blackmail on him. And in 2010, Lindsey Graham gave an interview to The New York Times where 0.69
00:42:32.060 they asked him about this. During a South Carolina Tea Party rally this spring, one speaker created
00:42:37.100 an uproar by postulating that Graham supported a guest worker program out of fear that the
00:42:41.880 Democrats might otherwise expose his homosexuality. Graham smirked when I brought this up.
00:42:47.580 Like, maybe I'm having a clandestine affair with Ricky Martin. He said, I know it's really going
00:42:53.060 to upset a lot of gay men. I'm sure hundreds of them are going to be jumping off the Golden Gate 0.96
00:42:58.160 Bridge, but I ain't available. I ain't gay. Sorry. I don't want to be petty, but the idea that hundreds 0.96
00:43:04.880 of gay men are jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge because they can't be with Lindsey Graham. First
00:43:09.520 of all i think they can whatever this is the closest that he's having fun he's like obviously
00:43:17.060 they're all lining up for me yeah you know it's a little self-deprecating i'll give him credit
00:43:21.840 for that like side of the joke he's like oh as if they're all in love with me you know yeah but
00:43:28.160 also it reveals that he's thought about this a little much i'm like okay so he's got ricky
00:43:33.720 martin specifically yes he's also got the golden gate bridge so he's thinking about the dense
00:43:38.100 concentration of gay men in beautiful san francisco i'm like okay all right you've uh you've turned
00:43:45.300 some of this over he's getting a little like he's a little more successful i would say yeah in that
00:43:50.720 one than when he's just like no no this is different totally totally in 2014 lindsey graham
00:43:58.820 who had at that point uh been serving as a senator from south carolina for 12 years two terms
00:44:05.040 even though he promised at that point
00:44:06.600 that he would no longer be seeking power.
00:44:08.280 Of course he was.
00:44:09.600 And he was at that point facing a primary challenge
00:44:12.480 from a guy named Dave Feliciano,
00:44:15.180 who during a press conference called Lindsey Graham
00:44:18.080 ambiguously gay.
00:44:20.220 Quote, it's about time that South Carolina says, 0.99
00:44:23.300 hey, we're tired of the ambiguously gay senator 0.92
00:44:26.740 from South Carolina. 0.73
00:44:28.160 We're ready for a new leader to merge the Republican Party.
00:44:32.060 And I just found this one funny because I'm like,
00:44:33.700 what does it mean to be ambiguously gay it's not that ambiguous i mean i've never heard this term
00:44:38.420 used in my life oh actually no it's from i'm dating myself i'm a little older than you matt
00:44:44.660 there was a south not south park a saturday night live animated skit that was very much the product
00:44:51.880 of like an aughts era homophobia it was a pair of superheroes who were called the ambiguously gay
00:44:58.720 duo oh and the joke is that they fight crime but then there's also a lot of like innuendo
00:45:05.120 in their dialogue they've got a really catchy theme song it's like the ambiguously gay duo
00:45:10.400 it's actually kind of cute i didn't know about this yeah you should check out the ambiguously
00:45:16.080 gay duo but that's definitely what he's referencing that same year bill maher jokes about lindsey
00:45:23.500 Graham's sexuality on national TV. New rule, Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock has to either
00:45:31.660 ugly it up a little or, yes, that's a congressman. Either ugly it up a little or explain how Lindsey
00:45:39.280 Graham is supposed to get any work done around here. Not a bad joke, Bill Maher, not a bad joke. 1.00
00:45:48.680 And if you're listening to the to the audio only version of this podcast, Aaron Shock, who at that time was a Republican congressman representing Illinois' 18th congressional district, was on the cover of Men's Health, abs glistening in perfect lighting.
00:46:06.340 I've never like seen this man before.
00:46:09.060 Really?
00:46:09.900 Yeah. No, I don't know this character.
00:46:11.820 Who is Aaron Shock?
00:46:13.140 He looks like he's at a circuit party on the cover of Men's Health.
00:46:16.200 And he so often is Moira Donegan.
00:46:21.280 Who is this guy?
00:46:22.860 Aaron Schock is my personal hell embodied.
00:46:27.580 And this isn't an Aaron Schock episode. 0.95
00:46:30.000 But while we are talking, like I said, about gay Republicans in varying degrees of the closet,
00:46:36.160 we have to talk about Aaron Schock because he's the subject of Bill Maher's joke.
00:46:40.460 He's saying if Aaron Schock keeps being this hot,
00:46:43.440 Lindsey Graham's not going to be able to get anything done.
00:46:46.200 Well, you know who also was a closeted gay Republican congressman in 2014, Bill Maher?
00:46:53.400 Aaron Schock.
00:46:54.260 This should not have been a shock, pun intended. 0.91
00:46:59.880 Because I'm sorry, no, a straight man has a sick, like visible abdominal muscles like that.
00:47:04.740 It's just not happening in that community.
00:47:07.600 The only ones who do are like, I think like too into themselves.
00:47:10.680 But anyway, Aaron Schock was a Republican who represented Illinois' 18th congressional district.
00:47:16.200 in the United States House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015.
00:47:20.940 I'm so happy I got to talk about this.
00:47:23.260 It was an open secret in some gay circles that Aaron Schock was gay.
00:47:29.460 Bill Maher, not privy to this, I suppose.
00:47:32.160 During his time in office, Aaron Schock voted, similarly to Lindsey Graham,
00:47:37.100 against repealing Don't Ask, Don't Tell.
00:47:39.100 He opposed adding sexual orientation and gender identity to federal hate crime protections.
00:47:43.820 He voted against the Employment on Discrimination Act.
00:47:47.160 He opposed same-sex marriage.
00:47:49.020 He opposed the repeal of the Defensive Marriage Act.
00:47:53.320 Aaron Schock resigned in disgrace in 2015
00:47:56.980 after it was revealed that he misappropriated public funds and campaign funds
00:48:02.440 for private jet flights, for new cars, for his own personal legal expenses,
00:48:08.440 for Super Bowl and country music awards tickets,
00:48:11.020 and over $100,000 on renovating his congressional offices
00:48:17.420 in the style of Downton Abbey.
00:48:20.540 No.
00:48:21.960 And he stayed in the closet after that. 0.99
00:48:26.420 That's the gayest scandal. 1.00
00:48:29.340 I mean, my goodness. 1.00
00:48:32.040 In any case, the whispers continue whispering,
00:48:35.020 and four years later in 2019,
00:48:38.340 Aaron Shock made headlines when he was recorded on video at Coachella, you know, shirtless with
00:48:47.160 a bunch of other muscly men with his hand down one of his friend's pants. But he didn't come 0.89
00:48:52.940 out immediately. He came out in March 2020, fascinatingly days before COVID lockdown was
00:48:59.060 announced. So in my mind, I'm still like he he he's the reason COVID. But in March 2020, Aaron
00:49:05.480 shock post, like a 10 slide Instagram post, which is still on his Instagram, wherein he
00:49:11.440 quote unquote apologized and said that if he were in Congress now, he quote, would support
00:49:18.260 LGBTQ rights in every way that he could.
00:49:21.640 Easy to say after you're out of office when, yeah, it doesn't matter anymore.
00:49:27.080 Right, right.
00:49:28.420 But, you know, in my mind, and I'm all about forgiveness, like I really am, you know, restorative
00:49:34.960 justice and all that and aaron shock you know despite being out of office he's still an extremely 0.75
00:49:41.940 well-connected wealthy guy especially relative to like almost any other lgbtq person in the country
00:49:48.060 no he can't vote on things in congress anymore but he's connected you know he can get involved
00:49:54.060 with charities he can hook people up to you know all sorts of political projects i mean there's
00:49:58.780 like there's so much that erin shock can do and i was very pissed off by this uh coming out slideshow
00:50:06.240 which was mostly self-pitying about how hard it was to be in the closet and i'm like yeah girl me
00:50:10.720 too but i wasn't in office i with a much smaller following back then posted something pissy on my
00:50:18.260 instagram story because i i used to i used to vet myself a little less before i posted things that
00:50:24.000 said I would do this again now I remember I remember I didn't even tag him you know I was
00:50:29.440 just like how convenient you know that you get to gallivant in the in the into the sun with your 0.99
00:50:33.980 muscle gay friends in West Hollywood or wherever the fuck and live a life that you at one of the 0.99
00:50:40.260 highest possible offices in the United States used to deny other people right Aaron Shock 0.99
00:50:46.760 direct messaged me and he said something to the effect of i would love i'm gonna put the dms on
00:50:54.280 the screen something to the effect of i'd love to to use my privilege to help the community
00:51:00.120 now that i'm out you know tell me how i can and i was 21 and he was like in his 40s when this
00:51:09.160 happened and i was like dude really you can't figure out like what i don't know the human
00:51:15.080 rights campaign is like do something. Google still worked back then. He could have used Google.
00:51:21.160 You know, nonetheless, I had a very long conversation with him for I remember the
00:51:26.300 whole afternoon we DM for hours. I was so patient. I thought, you know, here's this X, Y and Z
00:51:32.320 thing you can do. I worked with a group at the time called Encircle, which helped the LGBTQ
00:51:37.840 community in Utah, which struggles a lot, obviously, under the thumb of the Mormon church.
00:51:42.600 And I was like, you could do this. I sent him all the names, everything. Do you know what he did? 0.58
00:51:48.700 Guessing a whole lot of nothing at best.
00:51:51.440 Absolutely nothing. And in fact, during Trump's 2024 campaign, he hosted alongside Rick Grinnell and Matt Gaetz, among others, a Trump unity Gays for Trump fundraiser in Wisconsin, where Aaron Schock was a headlining speaker.
00:52:14.820 anyway that's my Aaron Shock rant I guess we're just getting a lot of different flavors 0.88
00:52:20.060 of a shameless gay republican I think Lindsey Graham had shame Aaron Shock has no shame 0.99
00:52:25.080 and Aaron Shock is still alive I mean it's just this genre of person they're always carving out 0.97
00:52:32.060 an exception for them I'm thinking of like the way I see women on the right they're often people
00:52:38.380 who have managed to arrange their lives in such a way 0.87
00:52:44.220 that they are personally insulated
00:52:46.280 from much of the violence of patriarchy, right?
00:52:50.640 At least for now.
00:52:51.440 And then they work pretty hard
00:52:55.100 at making other people more vulnerable
00:52:57.900 as a way of like proving themselves to the in-group, right?
00:53:01.380 Like I'm one of the good ones.
00:53:03.320 And I just want to know how often that works out in the end 1.00
00:53:06.680 because what I've seen is a lot of women who wind up getting really screwed over or humiliated 1.00
00:53:12.340 in gender terms or hurt in gender terms. I see a lot of gay people who, you know, think they can 0.99
00:53:19.000 throw other gay people under the bus and then wind up getting sort of excluded by the straight 0.79
00:53:24.960 mainstream. And I see people like Lindsey Graham, who basically are never able to sort of like
00:53:34.020 outrun their own shame who are never able to like come to grips with it and live with a degree of
00:53:41.640 like honesty and self-respect and then who die without ever having gotten to a more honorable
00:53:50.440 place you know i just don't think it works out for these guys and to the extent that it does
00:53:55.260 because to an extent sometimes it does and that's a hard thing that i think like i grapple with and
00:54:02.960 that I think people need to grapple with, right?
00:54:04.980 When I look at Aaron Schock, I mean, he is technically out.
00:54:08.980 You know, I don't think he will ever be welcomed 1.00
00:54:11.340 and rightfully so like at a pride event,
00:54:13.400 but maybe he doesn't want that.
00:54:15.500 But, and I talk about this on this podcast a lot,
00:54:18.180 he will be insulated from the worst consequences
00:54:20.680 of his own behavior.
00:54:22.260 He will be.
00:54:24.400 And I know that we, I mean, I think about this
00:54:28.020 in the context of like the LGBTQ community
00:54:30.240 and like the way that we talk about like gay conservatives
00:54:32.480 and women and women conservatives, et cetera, et cetera.
00:54:35.020 We always say like, you know, 1.00
00:54:36.260 the leopards will eat your face too.
00:54:37.980 And there are so many examples of that happening.
00:54:40.600 The leopards have eaten Lindsey Graham's face 0.96
00:54:42.840 in the way that he died in the closet and miserable.
00:54:46.220 But when I look at someone like Aaron Schock,
00:54:48.140 who still gets lots of love and adoration
00:54:50.640 from gay men on Instagram 0.82
00:54:52.340 because he takes steroids and has a nice body, right? 0.98
00:54:56.880 It's like, I don't know,
00:54:58.420 there's an argument to be made
00:54:59.620 about how the leopards are still eating his face
00:55:01.780 because he's hated by the vast majority of the people
00:55:05.120 that should be his own community, et cetera.
00:55:07.120 But also, I think probably in his own terms,
00:55:10.220 he has a really great life.
00:55:11.900 And that's where the leopard's eating face argument,
00:55:15.380 it's not the whole picture for me.
00:55:17.160 Because I'm like, even if they don't eat your face,
00:55:19.300 like you got to care about other people.
00:55:20.720 I mean, I think like nobody would make
00:55:23.380 these transactional surrenders
00:55:27.720 to the forces of like patriarchy and homophobia
00:55:30.440 if those transactions didn't come with real rewards.
00:55:35.200 That's why it's a betrayal.
00:55:37.340 It's because they are getting something
00:55:39.320 in exchange for their cooperation,
00:55:42.960 for their participation in hurting the rest of us.
00:55:46.360 I guess I can say for me,
00:55:48.060 and maybe this is like Pollyanna-ish or naive,
00:55:51.220 but those rewards that you get
00:55:53.460 are not things that I want.
00:55:56.460 You know?
00:55:57.000 Yeah.
00:55:57.560 I just think you can have fun
00:56:00.340 living a life that is centered around you know hanging out with matt gates and
00:56:05.900 sounds great getting a lot of like comments from like you know random stranger gay men on instagram
00:56:12.660 yeah but like when you lay your head down to sleep at night i i don't think i don't think if
00:56:19.660 i was living that life for all kinds of reasons i don't think i would be satisfied i think like i
00:56:25.060 think you you wouldn't like it matt because you're a person with a more expansive moral vision you
00:56:29.260 like have a soul is your problem that's why you can't understand these people that's very kind
00:56:33.780 of you and to be very clear i'm not i'm not uh i'm not considering a pivot
00:56:37.640 and if you don't mind i would like to take a quick break from the show to give a shout out
00:56:49.320 to rocket money for sponsoring today's episode i subscribe to a lot of things i don't know if
00:56:55.300 this is the case for you. It probably is. But I subscribe to a lot of things, whether it's
00:57:00.900 the various different streaming services. Isn't it great that there are so many goddamn streaming 0.98
00:57:05.520 services now that they've basically just reinvented cable where you have to subscribe 0.98
00:57:09.740 to different cable packages? Let's just go back to cable. Anyway, the point is I subscribe to a lot
00:57:14.500 of new streaming services, oftentimes ones that I've never heard of because they have the one
00:57:18.680 thing that I want to watch right now. And they're always called like plubi, poobie, hibu, jibijibu.
00:57:24.300 I also subscribe to a lot of different media properties, mostly so I can do research for
00:57:29.280 this show.
00:57:30.440 And a lot of times I want to subscribe for an article and not continue paying $10 a
00:57:36.020 month for the rest of my life.
00:57:37.620 One great way to manage subscriptions and stay on top of all of your finances, your

00:58:24.000 slash fruity. Now let's get back to the episode. Let's get back to Lindsey Graham. In 2015,
00:58:33.480 Lindsey Graham runs for president as an establishment alternative to Donald Trump.
00:58:39.880 He was famously extremely against Donald Trump, calling him a, quote, race-baiting, 0.99
00:58:45.400 xenophobic bigot and a jackass and saying, quote, if we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed and 1.00
00:58:52.500 we will deserve it. Fascinating. That attitude, of course, lasted until immediately after Trump won 1.00
00:58:59.820 in 2016, at which point Lindsey Graham said, President Trump is strongly committed to
00:59:05.500 rebuilding our military, which is music to my ears. Nevertheless, during his short-lived run
00:59:11.900 for presidential office, Lindsey Graham made about a million media appearances, 0.99
00:59:16.980 including this one with the one Dana Bash. Every evil person gets a cameo in this episode 0.99
00:59:23.600 where Dana Bash played a TV sensor friendly version of Fuck, Marry, Kill with Lindsey Graham. 0.99
00:59:33.440 Here is how that went. And this is sort of a longer clip, but we simply must suffer through 0.99
00:59:38.220 the whole thing because I said so. There's a fun bar game, which I will clean up because we are
00:59:44.140 in mixed company and on television. So I'm going to call it date, marry, or make disappear forever. 0.99
00:59:51.100 Okay. You guys know what the real thing is, right? You know what the real thing is, right? I think
00:59:56.740 I'm going to do a lot of the disappear forever. First one usually rhymes with truck. Okay. So
01:00:02.160 So, date, marry, or disappear forever.
01:00:05.780 Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina, Sarah Palin.
01:00:12.480 He's like, where's the... 0.99
01:00:13.800 I didn't know we were going to do the Mormon thing here. 1.00
01:00:20.240 Date, marry, or make disappear forever. 1.00
01:00:23.600 Take your time, Senator.
01:00:24.900 We've got all night.
01:00:27.320 We can't go beyond dating.
01:00:29.720 That's as far as I'm going dating.
01:00:31.800 Who do you want to date?
01:00:32.600 Do you want to date Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina, or Sarah Palin?
01:00:35.340 No, no, no.
01:00:36.120 So you have to pick one.
01:00:37.460 One of them you date, one of them you marry, and one of them you make disappear forever.
01:00:41.400 Sarah Palin will go hunting on our first date.
01:00:43.440 Okay, who are you marrying?
01:00:45.320 I've got to marry one of the three.
01:00:46.420 Yeah, that's how it works. 0.99
01:00:48.500 Keep up.
01:00:51.860 I've got to really watch what I say here.
01:00:54.440 Okay, so it's date, marry, or make disappear forever.
01:00:57.420 Hillary Clinton, Carly Fiorina, or Sarah Palin, and Sarah Palin. 1.00
01:01:01.260 Carly, because she's rich. 1.00
01:01:02.660 You're marrying her?
01:01:04.220 Okay. 0.82
01:01:05.440 She could keep me in the life of becoming a customer.
01:01:06.920 I like that.
01:01:07.400 That's very practical.
01:01:08.580 I'm a very practical guy.
01:01:10.000 So that leaves Hillary Clinton that you want to make disappear forever?
01:01:14.520 No, I just... 1.00
01:01:16.140 Is she rich?
01:01:18.620 I think so. 0.97
01:01:19.500 She said she was flat broke.
01:01:22.060 I'm going to let you off the hook. 1.00
01:01:24.340 She actually exits her own game. 0.50
01:01:27.640 She's like, this is not working.
01:01:29.000 We have to pivot.
01:01:29.840 you know this does if anything make me uh sympathetic to the idea that dana bash at
01:01:36.660 one point did do journalism like i said it just it just transports me back to the worst moments
01:01:44.660 in the closet where i'm like get me out of here you know what i mean yeah but this is like seventh
01:01:50.760 grade level of like closeted kid absence of self-confidence like the degree to which he's
01:01:56.600 squirming at even this like playful joking like quite like attenuated and abstract
01:02:04.960 allusion to personal life isn't like i don't know maybe this is just like because i i don't hang out
01:02:11.980 with people who are in the closet but like i don't know any gay men who couldn't play this game
01:02:16.620 yeah right like because it's fun because it doesn't matter uh and he's just like so visibly 0.70
01:02:23.020 uncomfortable he never even learned again he like doesn't he has not seemingly learned to play this
01:02:28.120 for laughs he has no no indication that he's in on the joke at all in 2018 on national coming out
01:02:33.440 day chelsea handler tweets if you're wondering why republicans took a sick day today it's probably
01:02:39.200 because it's hashtag national coming out day looking at you at lindsey graham south carolina
01:02:44.380 to which lindsey graham responded publicly quote to the extent that it matters i'm not gay to the
01:02:50.820 extent that it matters i like that i like that syntax what about the extent to which it doesn't
01:02:59.500 matter as far as yours concerned i'm not gay for your purposes sweetheart i'm not gay i want to
01:03:08.640 inject a drop of nuance here to say that uh with some respect to what chelsea handler is trying to 0.92
01:03:16.400 do here. I don't really like when straight people do this. Yeah. There's a section of my listenership
01:03:22.320 that is probably going to think I'm like too woke about it. I don't care. That's fine. But it is one
01:03:26.740 thing when Moira and I, when we gays sit here and have a thoughtful and yes, admittedly sometimes 0.68
01:03:33.780 fun conversation about a homophobic closeted politician sexuality. But when it becomes fodder
01:03:40.560 for straight people to say things that if you strip back the politics of it are to me straight
01:03:46.340 forwardly homophobic I get a little bit uncomfortable is that fair in your eyes I think
01:03:53.160 Chelsea Handler thinks that she's making fun of homophobia here yeah and I think what she's
01:03:57.820 actually doing unintentionally I'm gonna credit her here I can't read her mind but I'm pretty sure
01:04:03.180 that she's not intentionally doing this but I think she's actually sort of relying on being
01:04:09.580 gay as something shameful a little bit for the underlying humor there's another Chelsea Handler
01:04:14.720 tweet that I need to find right now. I wasn't going to read this one, but now it's like relevant 0.93
01:04:19.180 because I thought it was, I was like, I was like uncomfortable even reading it. From Chelsea
01:04:22.700 Handler. Hey, Lindsey Graham, what kind of dick sucking video do they have on you for you to be 1.00
01:04:28.440 acting like this? Wouldn't coming out be more honorable? I want to contrast this with a tweet 1.00
01:04:34.840 from a one Katya Zamalachikova, who when recently before Lindsey Graham died, Lindsey Graham tweeted
01:04:42.040 game on pray for Israel Katya replied life is not a joke and war is not a game but you clearly 0.99
01:04:49.800 don't give a shit about public service or human life you're nothing but an abhorrent Zionist 0.99
01:04:54.340 death cult cheering soulless ghoul just quit politics and focus on something you really love 1.00
01:04:59.220 like I don't know maybe sucking dick after dick in a public bathroom you despicable closeted 1.00
01:05:04.500 faggoty piece of shit. Now, we're not mincing words anymore. And I will say that such a tweet 1.00
01:05:12.620 comes off very differently from a celebrated and beloved drag queen than it does from Chelsea
01:05:18.680 Handler. Yeah, I think like, it is always most advisable to avoid trying to reappropriate 0.92
01:05:30.440 bigotries that have like not been wielded at you i believe that like if you really sat down and had 0.99
01:05:37.920 heart to heart with chelsea handler she doesn't think that anything is wrong with sucking dick 0.98
01:05:43.280 right um right but like this kind of attempt at a gotcha does sound really different from a straight 0.99
01:05:52.300 person than from somebody who i'm pretty sure has experienced homophobia maybe a smidge you 0.99
01:05:57.480 know what i mean right right moving on with our timeline in 2020 we get the big one gay porn actor 0.73
01:06:07.540 sean harding tweets on june 4th 2020 when we are all sitting at our homes during lockdown not much 0.96
01:06:14.640 going on this was destined to be a hit on twitter quote there is a homophobic republican senator who
01:06:21.980 is no better than trump who keeps passing legislation that is damaging to the lgbt and
01:06:26.760 minority communities. Every sex worker I know has been hired by this man, wondering if enough of us
01:06:32.600 spoke out, if that could get him out of office. I cannot do this alone. If you'd be willing to
01:06:38.280 stand with me against LG, please let me know. So far, I have two individuals who would be willing
01:06:45.180 to go public and support my claims. Anyone else? Now, not much came of this. Not immediately,
01:06:51.860 anyway. Not many people came forward, if anyone at all. And I think that confused people. And
01:06:59.240 I think that's because people often misunderstand how power works, even during the height of
01:07:05.360 scandal. To illustrate what I mean by that, I want to do yet another gay politician interlude 0.90
01:07:11.060 and tell you about a man named Barney Frank. In 1985, Barney Frank was a 45-year-old closeted 0.50
01:07:19.700 Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives representing Massachusetts.
01:07:25.060 That year, he found a classified advertisement in a local newspaper for Steve Gobi, a sex worker
01:07:32.220 in his mid-20s. Barney Frank paid Steve $80 for sex. They became friends afterwards, and Barney
01:07:40.980 hired Steve to become his personal aide, his housekeeper, his driver, all the things. Steve
01:07:47.920 Steve said that Barney Frank, quote, hoped to reform him out of sex work, which, by the way,
01:07:54.320 I find to be, you know, just a pretty grotesque attitude to have towards someone who you did 0.87
01:07:59.120 hire to have sex with you. Nonetheless, Steve continued doing sex work, sometimes using Barney 0.96
01:08:05.480 Frank's D.C. home to host clients. And in 1987, they parted ways after two years. Barney says
01:08:12.820 that he fired Steve after finding out that Steve was using his home to host clients, though Steve
01:08:19.360 would later say that Barney always knew that he was doing this. And Steve says he broke it off
01:08:24.240 with Barney when Barney's sexual and emotional demands became too much. Afterwards, Steve floated
01:08:31.420 from apartment to apartment in Washington, D.C., struggling to pay rent and facing various evictions.
01:08:37.160 And after two years, in August of 1989, Steve Gobi came forward with his story about Barney Frank.
01:08:46.340 He says that he had been tipped off that the Washington Times was investigating a story about an alleged cowboy ring run out of a house in D.C. and figured that he'd be caught sooner or later.
01:08:58.060 Steve, for his part, tried to start a bidding war for the story between various newspapers.
01:09:03.760 Ultimately, he gave it to the Washington Times for free in hopes that it would land him a book deal.
01:09:09.980 But it didn't.
01:09:11.200 Steve did sell a version of his story to Penthouse Magazine, which is available online, by the way.
01:09:16.580 The article is called Mayflower Madam by Art Harris, for an alleged but unconfirmed $50,000.
01:09:23.280 and Gobi insisted at a press conference that he never came forward for money and pledged to give
01:09:31.200 away the $50,000. During the brief 1989-1990 era media fascination with this story, Steve Gobi
01:09:40.160 went on the daytime tabloid talk show Geraldo, where the host Geraldo repeatedly asks him
01:09:45.980 if he's aware that this story will ruin Barney Frank's career and why he's trying to ruin Barney
01:09:52.760 Frank's career. You'll meet Steve Gobi, a guy who is single-handedly destroying the career of
01:09:59.000 Barney Frank, the congressman from Massachusetts. He'll tell us why. What do you think about the
01:10:03.280 fact he's destroying Barney Frank's life? Terrible. A bit of disdain from host Geraldo.
01:10:08.800 Are you pleading the Fifth Amendment? No, I'm not. I've been advised by an attorney not to
01:10:13.340 comment on this. Self-incrimination? I think money's a tacky subject to a discussion. Oh,
01:10:16.360 yeah, especially if you're going to go down on a tax rat. Do you understand, sir, that
01:10:22.420 if this runs the ordinary course, you have destroyed this man's life?
01:10:27.760 Well, it wasn't my intention.
01:10:29.320 But did it ruin his career?
01:10:30.980 The U.S. House Ethics Committee investigated Barney Frank
01:10:33.900 for his relationship to Steve Gobi.
01:10:36.240 They dismissed all of Steve's claims that Barney had hired him for sex
01:10:40.380 or that Barney knew Steve used his apartment for sex work.
01:10:43.360 They only found Barney guilty of using his congressional office
01:10:48.920 to fix 33 of Steve Gobi's parking tickets.
01:10:53.260 And the punishment for that was a vote
01:10:55.560 was brought to the House floor
01:10:57.200 to symbolically reprimand Barney Frank,
01:11:00.100 which the House voted to do.
01:11:02.520 So Barney Frank received
01:11:04.180 an official congressional reprimand.
01:11:08.020 Was his career ruined?
01:11:09.620 You tell me.
01:11:10.860 He stayed in office for 24 more years,
01:11:13.940 retiring in 2013.
01:11:15.580 He became a close colleague of Barack Obama.
01:11:18.040 He wrote three books.
01:11:19.520 The most recent one, which criticizes the left for going too far in support of trans
01:11:23.300 people, is available now for pre-order.
01:11:26.060 Barney Frank elaborated on that point of view, by the way, in an interview with CNN's Jake
01:11:31.280 Tapper on May 3rd of this year.
01:11:34.360 Males and female transsexuals playing sports dedicated for women. 1.00
01:11:42.880 I understand. 1.00
01:11:44.620 I thought I'd argue about that.
01:11:46.180 And I think in the interest of the transgender community, as well as others, it's going to be better to go at that in a more granular way and not simply announce that if you don't support it, you're a homophobe. 0.92
01:12:02.100 And died 17 days later. He literally died complaining about how trans people took the gay rights movement too far. Goodbye, Barney Frank.
01:12:12.180 And where is Steve Gobi? Well, one year after the story broke and interest in it had waned, Steve was arrested for possession of marijuana after getting into a fight with an off-duty cop. And that's pretty much the last information I can find about him before his obituary from 2020 when he died in his late 50s.
01:12:32.560 You know, I think when people hear this kind of sex scandal, be it somebody who's in the closet, somebody who's cheating on their spouse, somebody who's hiring sex workers, or even somebody who's committing sexual violence, they assume that the person who has this story about a prominent man can make a quick buck.
01:13:00.620 They assume that media attention equals money and opportunity.
01:13:05.380 Yes.
01:13:05.820 They assume that people will pay for this.
01:13:11.360 They assume that it will be something that redounds to the benefit of the storyteller or the accuser, right?
01:13:19.940 I think if you actually look at the people who come forward with these stories, even if it's not something like assault, even if it's just some sort of story of male sexual entitlement or sexual hypocrisy, the people who challenge that in public do not do well.
01:13:39.380 You can't tell a story of a powerful man behaving in a sexually illicit or abusive or just gross way and come out with your own life intact.
01:13:54.540 It really puts you through the ringer in terms of what it costs in time and humiliation and dignity and money.
01:14:03.280 You have to pay a lot to do that in all those different cases.
01:14:07.420 and you often don't get very much out.
01:14:10.400 Extraordinarily well said.
01:14:11.700 And that is exactly why I wanted to provide this anecdote
01:14:15.860 with Barney Frank,
01:14:17.700 because also I love telling these stories
01:14:20.340 and about these like extremely sort of consequential controversies
01:14:24.360 that the people at the center of them,
01:14:25.680 they don't benefit, they don't become rich.
01:14:29.280 And in the case of sex work,
01:14:31.200 if you are a sex worker in this situation,
01:14:33.900 you actually have so much to risk.
01:14:37.420 Remember Taylor Snyder, the sex worker from the beginning of this episode who met Lindsey Graham
01:14:43.060 in 2015? In an interview she recently gave about the whole thing with Matt Cullen,
01:14:48.100 which everyone should go watch, it's on YouTube, she explained, quote,
01:14:51.920 there's a reason you're getting paid. It's for discretion, not for sex.
01:14:56.440 If a sex worker comes forward with the identity of a client, even a client the public thinks is
01:15:02.320 worthy of being outed, someone like Lindsey Graham, they still risk so much. They risk
01:15:07.480 their business. You know, who is going to work with you if they don't think you're going to
01:15:12.960 respect their privacy? They risk their safety, their privacy, especially if they are trying to
01:15:19.920 take on a political behemoth. You know, part of the myth that people get rich quick by telling
01:15:28.420 these stories in public suggests that they don't need another job, right? And what I hear Taylor
01:15:33.420 saying is like, no, I need this job. Like this is actually my livelihood. I can't risk my future
01:15:40.540 income just to point out that this guy's a hypocrite. Yes, exactly. Sex work is already 1.00
01:15:47.820 an inherently unsafe profession because it's illegal almost everywhere in the US. Sex workers
01:15:53.940 who are mistreated by clients have very few avenues, if any, for legal protection. And I say
01:16:00.700 all of this because as much as Lindsey Graham is the story of a closeted queer who legislated 0.83
01:16:06.940 against queers, he was also a patron of sex workers who legislated against sex workers. 0.70
01:16:14.540 Lindsey Graham helped pass something called FOSTA-SESTA, which I think everyone should know
01:16:21.380 about, I think it's so important, FOSTA, SESTA, they are two bills, FOSTA and SESTA, that created
01:16:28.900 a carve out of Section 230. And this is like maybe a whole episode in and of itself. But Section 230
01:16:35.880 is a bill that we currently have that is so important for privacy online, for our ability
01:16:41.940 to have free speech online, which says that websites are not legally liable for the content
01:16:47.100 post it on them. Section 230 is the reason that a lot of websites can continue to exist without
01:16:54.620 being sued out of existence because people post things on that website that people don't like,
01:16:59.480 whether they be about information about reproductive health or LGBTQ people or sex work.
01:17:07.960 FOSTA-SESTA carves out an exception for what it calls sex trafficking, but the vagueness
01:17:14.740 of the way that the law is written, forced a lot of websites that consenting adult sex workers
01:17:21.340 used to advertise their services to shut down out of fear of government prosecution.
01:17:28.420 FOSTA-SESTA was and continues to be devastating for sex workers who once found a layer of
01:17:34.680 protection from meeting and vetting their clients online, but are now forced to engage
01:17:40.860 in these interactions on the street, which is much more dangerous. Lindsey Graham benefited 0.98
01:17:47.400 from further disenfranchising the sex workers that he was hiring. Lindsey Graham also co-sponsored 0.99
01:17:54.660 the Earn It Act, which further forced websites to quote-unquote earn the protections that Section
01:18:01.300 230 provides by more strictly monitoring and censoring their users, and which was called a
01:18:06.740 quote, disaster for online speech and privacy, especially for the LGBTQ and sex worker communities
01:18:12.400 by the ACLU. So I wanted to include this as just like a real shout out to sex workers who, you 0.72
01:18:19.140 know, I think are left out of this story that is so often reduced to like he was a closeted queer
01:18:24.680 person. He was also a patron of sex workers who who wanted them to be as vulnerable as possible
01:18:31.200 because the less power that they had,
01:18:35.240 the more someone like Lindsey Graham can exploit them.
01:18:39.080 You know, something that is striking to me
01:18:41.080 in these accounts from sex workers that we've discussed today,
01:18:44.600 these are not big amounts of money.
01:18:46.520 You know, Barney Frank paid $80.
01:18:49.200 Lindsey Graham paid $400.
01:18:51.900 These are people who are making like low margin business transactions here.
01:18:57.920 And I think that is another thing that we should keep in mind when we're like making these kinds of assessments of like, OK, what do these people owe the public about their stories?
01:19:10.820 It's like these are often not people who are rolling in it.
01:19:14.600 Yeah. I want to talk about Hunter Biden for a second.
01:19:19.440 Hunter Biden, also of hiring sex worker fame and also of crack fame.
01:19:24.460 Good for him. Good for him.
01:19:25.420 uh hunter biden is making a media resurgence uh for some sort of unclear reason he's going on all
01:19:33.580 the podcasts he's like hitting it big on twitter he's highlighting the positive aspects as he
01:19:39.820 claims of his father's legacy and he recently went on a one jen welch's podcast jen welch who i love
01:19:47.220 so much but he said something that uh i found to be really quite odd about what he calls
01:19:54.860 the closetocracy i believe that the biggest problem in america is as in in washington dc
01:20:00.920 with the federal government is a is it not the oligarchy um closet cases it's the closetocracy
01:20:07.120 as i call it it is and i'm and i'm being totally serious everybody knows there is like this 0.84
01:20:14.000 closeted gay mafia largely republican that exists in washington dc and everybody knows 0.67
01:20:24.360 every single one of them who who's gay and so it's in and what i believe the the only reason 0.65
01:20:33.000 that that is relevant is because i believe that internal conflict creates so much vitriol inside 0.81
01:20:42.920 a person that they take it out on the rest of the world and they do and so what they do is their
01:20:48.520 whole lives they've been closeted and so you have this like black ball inside your yourself this
01:20:55.160 like black blackened heart by the fact that you can't be who you want to be and so you take it
01:21:01.560 out on everybody else and these men largely men have done exactly that and they're everybody knows 0.99
01:21:10.600 who they are everybody i'm sorry that shit's just woke homophobia 0.97
01:21:15.560 that stuff pisses me off so much love jen welch i have to say i love jen welch so much no nothing 0.91
01:21:22.640 but love to her i think she's like maybe you're gonna save democracy but like yeah if anybody
01:21:27.100 does it it'll be her right but this is two straight people talking to microphones about 0.77
01:21:31.520 how gay people have a moral rot that they are not capable of having it's like positing itself
01:21:38.400 as concern about the deleterious effects of homophobia, but it also takes this moral failure, 0.98
01:21:45.420 this capacity for contempt, this sadism, and ascribes that as being a gay trait. And I'm
01:21:55.180 sorry, I don't think Lindsey Graham is a bad person because he was in the closet. I think
01:22:00.860 he's a bad person because he has bad values, because he made bad decisions. He is not a bad
01:22:07.260 person because he's a gay man because if that was the determining factor what about all the 1.00
01:22:12.680 fucking straight people doing that shit it's a long route back to saying gay people are morally 1.00
01:22:17.940 different from us and they are morally lesser than us and i just don't think it's compatible 1.00
01:22:23.080 with a commitment to gay rights and dignity yeah i i agree i mean i i struggle with this a lot 0.81
01:22:30.240 because i think that there is like a kernel of something interesting in what he's saying here
01:22:36.940 Like, I do think on like a on like a limited psychoanalysis of this one person that we're talking about today. I do wonder if his own personal struggles as it relates to his identity caused him to unleash more violence on other people. That's the fault of homophobia.
01:22:56.280 If you take that moral logic as correct, if you take Hunter Biden's psychological logic or psychoanalysis of Lindsey Graham and others, supposedly, and let's bracket it and say for the sake of argument it's true.
01:23:12.140 Say that somebody like Lindsey Graham really was driven by his gay shame to be a warmonger in Iran or to cheerlead for Donald Trump at home. 0.74
01:23:28.380 then you would have to first of all there'd be a lot more gay men in washington than i think 0.95
01:23:33.400 there are but then you would also have to blame that function not on lindsey graham being a gay 0.65
01:23:40.300 man but on the social structure of homophobia that makes being a gay man so shameful right uh
01:23:46.340 and so like self-hating right it's still like i think what's off to me is like even if you posit
01:23:51.880 it as correct even if you sort of like accept that there there's a little bit of truth there
01:23:57.700 it's still putting the blame on the gay individual rather than on the homophobic society yeah i mean
01:24:06.380 my biggest problem with this which i am seeing more and more and more of on the right specifically
01:24:14.060 is not that there is not interesting psychoanalysis to be done of someone like lindsey
01:24:21.000 graham and where the blame should ultimately of course be put on homophobia and inspire us to
01:24:27.020 create a society that's less homophobic and therefore we have less violence out of closeted 0.97
01:24:33.300 angry gay men, right? It's not that. To me, the problem is that this obscures a much larger 0.97
01:24:40.080 problem, which is that, no, the biggest problem in this country is oligarchy. It is unregulated
01:24:45.720 capitalism. It is all of these things that, by the way, Joe Biden, his father, championed.
01:24:53.220 Joe Biden didn't help manufacture a genocide on Gaza because he was a closeted homosexual. 0.93
01:25:02.480 You know what I mean? 0.70
01:25:03.820 And to me, this is just such a convenient way to let off the hook all of the people and power structures that actually are responsible for the greatest amount of harm being exerted on the world from members of the United States government. 0.96
01:25:19.500 not because they're closeted, angry gay homophobes, but because they are allegiant to violence and 0.97
01:25:27.020 power and capital. Yeah. Like that's what it is to me. And my problem with this line of thinking 1.00
01:25:33.220 is that I was looking at the replies and quote tweets of this video, and there were a lot from 0.96
01:25:39.200 avowed Twitter anti-Semites saying, finally, we can talk about how it's the gay Jews controlling 0.97
01:25:46.200 the world. Because if you listen to what Hunter Biden is saying here, it sounds a lot like 0.98
01:25:50.020 anti-Semitism in its structure, in its way of they're all secretly controlling the world.
01:25:57.040 And it's just it's it's not reality. It's not reality. I know it's fun to be like, look,
01:26:03.300 all these closet cases. Oh, the grinder outage at the Republican National Convention, whatever.
01:26:08.680 But this like homosexual, this isn't actually what's controlling the world, you guys. 0.96
01:26:13.340 like it's it's just not if gay men were secretly controlling the world don't you think some things 0.77
01:26:17.780 would be different first of all it would not be a secret for very long because they would they 0.81
01:26:22.740 would gossip they would tell us they'd be doing their downtown abbey offices and it'll just come
01:26:27.340 out sooner or later but i just you know i think it's like a an effort to like push this away from
01:26:35.220 the speaker yeah there's just like nefarious other right and like also something really kind of i
01:26:40.540 think a little degrading about our current dystopia is that it's not being done in secret
01:26:45.760 by a shadowy cabal. It's all being done out in the open, right in front of us. And that's,
01:26:52.260 I think, you know, an insult. It would at least be, it would be a little more optimistic. I think
01:26:56.920 if the people who were ruining this country and this world for the sake of their own greed
01:27:02.680 were ashamed enough of themselves or scared enough of consequences that they thought they
01:27:07.900 had to hide but they don't have to hide I want to talk about the mechanics of how he died because
01:27:14.220 I think it's such a good metaphor do you know like the mechanics of how Lindsey Graham died
01:27:18.680 not really I was trying to read it about it this morning it was like an aortic tear yeah I but I
01:27:25.100 don't know what that is what happened you know you can shorthand it as like a heart attack but
01:27:29.860 that's not quite what it is it wasn't like a blockage what happened that is he had a long-term
01:27:34.760 disease of the heart and this is i'm sorry matt this is like such a metaphor but over time over
01:27:40.980 the course of years and years his heart became weak and it became hard like brittle and eventually
01:27:50.520 it just tore apart and i think that's what being a republican will do to you
01:27:57.300 if not in like literal physical terms but i think living the kind of life that lindsey graham lived
01:28:06.040 required him to put convenience over principle it required him to hurt people a lot it required him
01:28:14.520 to look away from other people's suffering and it required him to betray things about himself
01:28:23.760 and about his friends that he could have lived
01:28:28.060 a much more expansive life if he had embraced instead.
01:28:32.640 And I just like, I hate the heavy-handedness of this.
01:28:35.980 I don't think you have to be a bad person
01:28:37.620 to die of that disease, right?
01:28:39.700 But I think in Lindsey Graham's case,
01:28:43.140 I want to make an exception.
01:28:44.660 I think the metaphor is just too apt.
01:28:47.000 Yeah, there's a user on Threads called
01:28:49.920 The Cooking Gene, G-E-N-E, who wrote,
01:28:53.520 this is a humble reminder, Lindsey Graham, this could have turned out different. You could have
01:28:58.260 been a Southern Harvey Milk. He could have done so many amazing things, but he didn't.
01:29:05.200 And I don't know, I was trying to think yesterday when I was taking my notes of what my thesis is
01:29:10.940 on the life of Lindsey Graham, besides all of the obvious ways that he was horrible and responsible
01:29:16.960 for mass death and responsible for mass suffering across the globe. But like, Lindsey Graham
01:29:24.460 mongered his entire life for war with Iran, which we are now in and losing. And, you know,
01:29:34.400 he finally got what he wanted, which was this war, yet another war. And then while we're in it,
01:29:43.280 As, you know, U.S. service people are dying, as people in Iran are dying, as this is, you know, aiding in the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the ongoing occupation and brutalization of Palestine.
01:29:55.200 Like, he just dies.
01:29:58.620 He just dies.
01:30:01.320 There's something so spiritually just bizarre to me that you can just devote your life to, like, suffering on a mass scale.
01:30:11.900 And now he's just gone.
01:30:13.280 like all of that personal satisfaction he got out of making other people suffer while he internally 0.99
01:30:19.920 suffered it was all for nothing he's one of the most pathetic people of my entire life 1.00
01:30:28.580 and now he's dead and somehow in death it's even more pathetic 0.98
01:30:32.840 i really like the guy what can i say 0.85
01:30:37.320 you know i think like one take on lindsey graham that i've heard that i think is kind of optimistic
01:30:43.460 is like oh he thought he had time right like he thought he had time to see through this long
01:30:50.720 you know longed for war with iran and to like change it into i guess something stable he thought
01:30:58.860 he had time to try and like use trump for his own ends and then flip back around and say that guy was
01:31:05.940 a mess. I never liked him. He thought he had time, maybe even, to come to some sort of settlement
01:31:13.160 with his own sexuality. But tomorrow is not guaranteed, folks. You might not get to undo
01:31:22.800 the bad things you're doing tomorrow. You might not live that long. You might not get that
01:31:27.560 opportunity. So it's easier and a little bit of an insurance policy to just try and do the right
01:31:33.180 thing today. Hmm. That is beautiful. And also that was my takeaway to the one that I finally
01:31:40.680 landed on, which is just like Lindsey Graham lived. And this is a little bit inarticulate,
01:31:47.380 but he like he lived a life of like death and of destruction interpersonally, politically,
01:31:56.000 professionally. All he did was destroy and tear down and make miserable. And I feel like 0.72
01:32:02.380 with what limited time we have on God's green earth,
01:32:06.580 the only way that we can live a life
01:32:09.500 so fundamentally different than Lindsey Graham's
01:32:12.000 is just to live lives of creation and of joy
01:32:15.720 and of being ourselves and of life.
01:32:20.200 I'm not a poet, but that's what I got.
01:32:23.660 That's beautiful, Matt.
01:32:24.960 That's why I love hearing from you.
01:32:26.440 You better stop.
01:32:27.660 Is that all we got?
01:32:29.220 I think that might be all we got. 1.00
01:32:30.680 But I can't think of anybody I would rather have thought about this sad, creepy son of a bitch with. 0.99
01:32:37.780 So I'm really glad it was you. 0.99
01:32:39.320 I love you so much.

01:32:42.360 Where can people, well, I already told them, but reiterate, where can people find you?
