00:00:00.000 With your help, the Missing Witches Annual Fundraiser for Native Women's Shelters raised $5,468.18, over 3,000 of which went directly to the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal.
00:00:18.480 Thank you so much.

00:00:27.220 You aren't being a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:34.220 You must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:57.220 When we saw her picture on the adoption website, she looked crazed. 0.98
00:01:04.620 Wild-eyed, black waves spiking out in every direction.
00:01:10.300 As we were told, she was found in a farmer's field, her overgrown, matted fur frozen.
00:01:19.020 And imagine our surprise when we went to meet her for the first time,
00:01:23.240 and a little, long-legged show poodle trotted out gingerly from behind the counter.
00:01:29.940 We had chosen a name for her based on her picture. 0.58
00:01:33.520 Cherry Garcia.
00:01:35.740 Sweet like ice cream, but maybe one too many hits of acid in the 60s.
00:01:41.100 But our psychic connection was immediate.
00:01:43.880 As if she was speaking English in my ear, I heard,
00:01:48.980 My name is Bijou.
00:01:50.920 French for jewels
00:01:53.280 And so it was
00:01:56.440 Bijou
00:01:58.000 B was skittish
00:02:01.240 Untrusting 1.00
00:02:02.680 And the shelter manager told me that only one staff member had been allowed to hold her
00:02:08.000 Would you like to try?
00:02:10.860 She asked 1.00
00:02:11.660 Bijou leapt into my arms, nuzzled in close and licked my face
00:02:18.840 The SPCA staff were astounded.
00:02:23.440 Bea wasn't fixed, but her tail had been cut too short years before.
00:02:28.060 Botched, the vet told us. 0.91
00:02:30.700 Maybe she was abandoned, or maybe she ran away.
00:02:34.800 Maybe it was all a terrible mix-up, and the family who lost her gave up the search, despondent, and still miss her today.
00:02:42.060 I think a lot about Bea's imaginary past.
00:02:46.280 But she doesn't.
00:02:48.460 Because now, I am Bijou's kin.
00:02:56.000 I have given her safe harbor, and in return she is a fountain of joy and unconditional love.
00:03:04.580 Bee has taught me so much, so today, I'll share her with you.
00:03:12.560 I am Bijou Kin.
00:03:14.240 In the world of the occult, dogs are believed to bring positive energy, which witches can harness and use for protection.
00:03:24.480 According to occult teachings, dogs have the ability to keep negative energy at bay.
00:03:31.180 It's because of these beliefs that dogs have come to work hand in hand with witches.
00:03:36.060 See, positive energy is a protection spell, a canine trait I aspire to.
00:03:47.120 Have you ever met a three-legged dog?
00:03:50.740 And did that three-legged dog bemoan his fate, or did he run in new ways, shouting as he sped past,
00:03:58.820 I've still got three good ones!
00:04:03.180 Hecate had a black she-dog called Hecabe.
00:04:06.900 The dog was the Trojan queen who leapt into the sea after the fall of Troy
00:04:11.860 and was transformed by a goddess, then adopted by the sympathetic Hecate. 0.95
00:04:17.820 Witches and dogs make good teams. 0.60
00:04:23.480 Because dogs operate in a different reality than we humans.
00:04:28.480 They can smell fear, money, even cancer and missing persons.
00:04:33.460 They know who and what has been here by the invisible trace they leave behind.
00:04:41.280 Scientists guess that a dog's sense of smell is somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 times more accurate than ours.
00:04:51.120 I am Bijou Kin, acutely aware that there is more to be known than what meets the eye.
00:04:58.260 More in existence than we can see, but we can smell the changes in a shifting breeze.
00:05:05.800 Face to the sun and nose to the wind, witches get information carried from miles and miles and miles away.
00:05:20.660 Bijou reminds me every day of what is important in life.
00:05:25.140 She is perfect love and perfect trust
00:05:28.420 She encourages me to run and jump and laugh and play
00:05:33.260 To get outside
00:05:34.520 To stop and smell the everything
00:05:38.420 Using all six senses to navigate our path
00:05:44.060 I am Bijou Kin 0.77
00:05:46.140 She plays by the rules unless the rules don't suit her
00:05:50.640 I am Bijou Kin
00:05:53.740 She gets plenty of sleep and drinks plenty of water.
00:05:58.180 She is connected to nature.
00:06:00.560 She has no shame around her body or mine.
00:06:04.880 She doesn't care how I look.
00:06:07.220 Just that I'm there.
00:06:09.300 Just that I exist to be with her in this moment.
00:06:15.280 Bijou voices her opinions, but is also a Crete listener.
00:06:19.660 She sets clear boundaries and does her best to respect the boundaries set by others,
00:06:23.940 but she makes her own desires known with unwavering confidence.
00:06:30.920 As I write, she wedges herself between me and the sofa back,
00:06:36.400 pressing against me, making a deal that we will protect each other.
00:06:41.840 She has taught me that if someone doesn't want me around,
00:06:45.120 I know there's somebody else out there who does.
00:06:48.720 If I am lost, I can trust that I will be found.
00:06:53.660 I am Bijou Kin.
00:06:55.840 I was missing her, and she sniffed me out, 0.75
00:07:00.360 leapt into my arms and licked my face.
00:07:04.280 Poodles are considered lucky dogs,
00:07:06.680 particularly if you pet or scratch them before you leave the house.
00:07:10.880 In some countries, the magical properties of a dog are determined by its colors.
00:07:16.260 A golden-colored dog is associated with prosperity.
00:07:20.180 A white pooch with romance.
00:07:22.760 And black dogs are symbols of protection of your hearth and your home.
00:07:28.880 And protect she does.
00:07:30.500 B protects me from dangers like Risa's toddler or the UPS guy.
00:07:37.860 But she protects me too from a more pressing danger.
00:07:41.940 to lose hope, or forget to laugh.
00:07:47.600 I am Bijou Kin, and I won't go a day without dancing,
00:07:52.120 running in a circle, or marveling at the world around me.
00:07:57.340 I am Bijou Kin.
00:07:59.420 I protect, and in return, am protected.
00:08:06.900 When Odysseus returned home, in disguise,
00:08:10.120 After a 20-year odyssey, his dog Argo was the only one who recognized him.
00:08:17.660 I am Bijou Kin, and I will be recognized.
00:08:22.800 I play by the rules unless the rules don't suit me.
00:08:26.320 I get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of water.
00:08:29.680 I am connected to nature.
00:08:33.160 I can smell fear.
00:08:36.220 I have no shame around my body.
00:08:40.120 I exist to be in this moment.
00:08:45.340 I am Bijou Kin, and if I am lost, I trust I will be found, loved, and protected. 0.98
