00:00:00.000 Join us and our amazing, surprising Missing Witches Coven at patreon.com slash missingwitches. 1.00
00:00:09.520 You aren't being a proper woman, therefore you must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:16.040 You must be a witch. 1.00
00:00:18.100 Welcome, Missing Witches Coven, to season seven of the Missing Witches podcast. 0.73
00:00:24.820 Teresa, can you believe it? Seven seasons.
00:00:26.380 I can't believe it at all, but I love the number seven.
00:00:30.000 it feels so witchy to me i'm here for it i don't believe it looking back it feels like
00:00:36.640 we've been doing this for 10 000 years and like six months yes i do remember
00:00:44.400 after we finished season one we were like well we're making a season two whether you
00:00:49.120 people are going to listen to it or not because we just like were so inspired by the process and
00:00:56.400 you know the fact that people were actually listening to it was great and obviously we're
00:01:01.840 super thankful that you who are listening are inviting us into your brain space yeah but we
00:01:07.120 would definitely be doing this whether you were here or not nothing personal but getting to spend
00:01:12.980 time with these people's stories is a dream come true it's such it's something I I was doing when
00:01:20.000 I was working a 60 hour a week job I was staying up late to do it it was something I was doing when
00:01:24.540 I was learning how to be a new mom I it's something that I can only imagine fueling me
00:01:30.840 forever now although there were times I wanted to quit because I just felt broken by both those
00:01:34.740 other things but um but yeah so we also have always said and we're committed to playing with
00:01:40.420 our format um our podcast our rules we fucking love just being able to be inspired we are 100
00:01:47.740 listener supported and we know our listeners because we hang with them in our coven every
00:01:53.240 new moon so we feel pretty well supported in being able to take the creative risks and play
00:01:59.320 that are fundamental to our practice so with that in mind yeah we're going to change it up a little
00:02:05.260 bit again this season yeah last season we ended with the tituba episode and maybe those of you
00:02:14.200 who are here with us a year ago remember that that there was like a scripted piece and then
00:02:20.620 Risa and I uh jumped into a room together just to sort of talk about like our feelings about
00:02:28.300 Tituba and that story and we had such a great time doing that that we thought we'd extend that
00:02:33.140 practice to uh season seven lucky seven yeah so that's what we're gonna do today and uh for the
00:02:41.160 rest of these coming weeks that will define this season and thanks for being here with us along for 0.99
00:02:47.200 the ride thank you so without further ado let's hear about w-i-t-c-h which is fucking shit up 0.98
00:02:56.600 warning this episode of the missing witches podcast contains extremely triggering language 0.98
00:03:05.900 such is the nature of feminist witch history listener grounding is advised
00:03:13.420 In 2016, a man who has been accused of rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, including
00:03:24.480 non-consensual kissing or groping, by at least 25 women since the 1970s, was elected president
00:03:33.360 of the United States. A man who had campaigned with a promise to nominate a judge who would
00:03:39.160 help overturn Roe v. Wade, a man who called powerful women nasty and bragged about grabbing 1.00
00:03:45.380 beautiful women by the pussy without asking, was elected president of the United States. 1.00
00:03:52.620 Feminists worldwide were frightened and angry, worried that this human incarnation of sexism 1.00
00:03:59.900 and greed, powerful and corrupt, would become the role model for acceptable behavior, or worse, 1.00
00:04:07.320 a dystopian prototype for the path to success in the 21st century.
00:04:13.060 Women's marches were organized all over North America and spread globally. 0.98
00:04:18.060 Shops ran out of pink yarn as witch crafters used their domestic powers of hook and needle 0.98
00:04:24.900 to whip up pussy hats by the thousands. 1.00
00:04:28.680 Me? I had an idea. 0.99
00:04:32.000 I had flour, water, newspaper, and an idea. 0.54
00:04:36.520 I set about creating my vision, a piñata, a dick-and-balls-shaped piñata, a phallic symbol of hegemonic toxic masculinity painted pink, and filled it with candy.
00:04:49.580 I went to the Manif with my piñata and my father's boxing gloves and shouted,
00:04:53.600 Don't be afraid! When you smash the patriarchy, candy falls out!
00:04:59.600 I invited fellow protesters to don the boxing gloves and punch our symbol of toxic masculinity. 0.96
00:05:06.000 They gleefully punched the patriarchy until its guts spilled out onto the ground. 0.95
00:05:11.180 And then we ate the candy.
00:05:14.100 A student from the local university was documenting the march and stopped me for a quick interview. 0.98
00:05:19.120 They asked, why a penis piñata? 0.98
00:05:23.140 I didn't know. 1.00
00:05:25.180 My mind raced through a personal feminist history. 1.00
00:05:29.660 Being nine and arguing with a classmate that the Beastie Boys song 0.99
00:05:33.860 Girls to do the dishes, girls to clean up my room
00:05:37.800 Wasn't funny
00:05:38.940 30-something years of being dismissed and harassed
00:05:44.320 Undermined and undervalued
00:05:46.660 Deemed humorless
00:05:49.200 Marches, protests, petitions
00:05:54.080 Letter-writing campaigns and fundraising 0.85
00:05:57.500 all fueled by the fear, sorrow, and rage of gendered injustice. 0.99
00:06:05.020 They asked me, why a penis piñata? 0.98
00:06:08.300 I told them, I'm just so tired of being angry. 0.98
00:06:13.860 I just wanted to have some fun.
00:06:17.060 Without knowing it, I'd become part of the legacy of WITCH,
00:06:23.240 Which? Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell, a group that sprung up from the Women's Liberation Movement in 1968 New York, on Halloween, to hex sexism, capitalism, and racism.
00:06:41.500 Heather Booth says that the actions WITCH favored are still very present in the form of flash mobs and modern-day performance protests, she told Vice.
00:06:52.500 I'm not saying any of these people think about WITCH as they do this
00:06:57.700 But it's the same tradition of hit-and-run visibility that's funny, serious, engaging, memorable
00:07:04.660 And has an impact on a broader audience
00:07:07.660 And has an impact on people who are involved in it
00:07:11.220 Because one of the main things is that the women's movement changed us
00:07:15.820 We changed from traditional roles
00:07:18.980 From being in the background
00:07:20.780 not being so visible, not taking risks, not challenging traditional conventions,
00:07:27.340 to taking action, taking risks, and standing up for what we believed in.
00:07:35.620 Heather was a member of the Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS, in the late 60s,
00:07:41.540 a group of left-leaning university students organizing for civil rights and against the Vietnam War.
00:07:47.840 She said, to be an organizer, you have to love people and hate injustice.
00:07:56.080 We'll come back to Heather Booth because she has done amazing things, but first I want to underscore that the Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell was a collective.
00:08:07.940 Its costumed anonymity meant that no one star served as frontman.
00:08:13.360 Its geographical spread made it wild and free, impossible to control.
00:08:20.000 Co-founder of WITCH predecessor, the Chicago Women's Liberation Union, Vivian Rothstein, said,
00:08:27.800 to feel like you can have the power in a group to do something that needs to be done that you could never do on your own,
00:08:35.420 I think it's what I was looking for my whole life.
00:08:37.820 WITCH was a child of New York radical women, and as I learned about the founding of this
00:08:45.800 collective, rage began to bubble in my guts. The toil and trouble of Elizabethan theater, 0.83
00:08:53.040 which echoes into the late 60s and reverberates in our 21st century.
00:08:59.260 Even amongst the progressive left-wing, women in the SDS found that they weren't being allowed 0.89
00:09:03.660 any leadership opportunities. Marilyn Webb spoke to other women and discovered, as she put it,
00:09:09.560 aha, it's not just me being insecure. So at an anti-war demonstration to protest the election
00:09:17.240 of Richard Nixon, Marilyn joined in with other women to declare their part in the movement.
00:09:23.000 She got up on the stage, and the crowd of new left men went crazy. Before she was even able
00:09:30.940 to speak, they started whistling, catcalling, booing, and according to Ellen Willis and Marilyn 1.00
00:09:37.540 herself, screaming things like, take her off the stage and fuck her, and fuck her down a dark alley. 1.00
00:09:47.060 I hate even repeating it. I hate that you are hearing those words now. 1.00
00:09:54.940 I hate that even in a space founded on building a better, more democratic world,
00:10:04.640 Marilyn raised her voice only to be shouted down with threats of rape.
00:10:10.880 And so many of us are afraid to use our voices because the reaction we might face
00:10:17.840 feels even scarier than the oppression we're protesting.
00:10:22.820 So let's add Alice Wolfson, who said,
00:10:27.160 We were angry.
00:10:29.300 Maybe the anger is what carried us through and made us fearless.
00:10:34.700 So let us vow here, in the Missing Witch's Coven,
00:10:40.260 to make a tool of our rage,
00:10:42.820 to not allow it to paralyze us or steal our hope,
00:10:47.400 but rather to use the alchemy of witchcraft
00:10:51.320 to turn rage to fuel and make us fearless. Marilyn said, I didn't expect movement men to behave like
00:11:00.480 that, and I was shocked. We weren't respected. Fran Beal said, we're talking about liberation
00:11:07.500 and freedom, and all of a sudden men are going to turn around and start talking about putting
00:11:12.240 you in your place. That was the contradiction in terms that we were no longer prepared to put up
00:11:19.100 with. More women's liberation groups began to form. Circles gave women a space for their stories,
00:11:27.300 and en masse, they experienced Marilyn's, aha, it's not just me being insecure. Women with
00:11:36.320 master's degrees and PhDs in history realized that they had graduated knowing nothing about women, 0.99
00:11:42.840 women's literature women's art women's stories heather booth said we thought if we could dress 1.00
00:11:52.240 up like witches and then give a hex we wanted to challenge the white man's canon at the university
00:11:58.560 of chicago and so part of the hex went knowledge is power through which you control our mind our
00:12:06.620 spirit, our bodies, our soul. Hex. Heather hisses the last word. Hex.
00:12:17.880 In her 1970 book, Today's Witches, Susie Smith wrote about WITCH.
00:12:25.860 The New York Times magazine for June 1st, 1969, in an article by Andrew M. Greenlee,
00:12:33.060 a Roman Catholic priest who is program director at the National Opinion Research Center of the
00:12:39.480 University of Chicago, and a lecturer in sociology at the university. Father Greenlee said that
00:12:44.840 during a recent unpleasantness between the University of Chicago and its Students for a
00:12:50.600 Democratic Society, quote, the normal decorous quiet of the social science building was rent
00:12:58.280 one fine afternoon by ear-piercing sounds. Secretaries, research assistants, and even
00:13:04.640 a few faculty members dashed to their office doors to try to learn if someone was being
00:13:09.360 murdered. What they discovered instead was three young women, dressed in shabby and tattered 0.52
00:13:16.080 garments and those pointed witch hats, standing in front of the sociology department office
00:13:21.000 shrieking, Fie on thee, Morris Janowitz, a hex on thy strategy. Members of WITCH had come to put a
00:13:30.940 curse on the sociology department. So far, Greenlee said, nothing seems to have happened to Professor
00:13:38.840 Janowitz or the sociology department, but if it does, there's going to be an awful lot of frightened
00:13:44.740 people along the midway. He offered to sprinkle holy water on the departmental office, saying,
00:13:51.000 While social science seems ready for witchcraft, it is not yet ready for exorcism.
00:13:58.500 Father Greenlee says that WITCH is only one manifestation, though a spectacular one,
00:14:05.840 of a revival of interest in the occult on the country's college campuses.
00:14:11.720 The witches elaborate a quasi-scholary explanation of how they continue a Neolithic religion
00:14:17.800 that worshipped the great earth mother goddess
00:14:20.560 until it was replaced by Christianity.
00:14:23.900 W-I-T-C-H, he says,
00:14:25.480 is a combination of the put-on and the serious,
00:14:29.460 the deliberately comic and the profoundly agonized,
00:14:33.880 of the bizarre and the holy.
00:14:38.460 I kind of love Father Greenlee.
00:14:41.760 Whether he meant it as a compliment or an insult,
00:14:44.720 and we being witches are at liberty to interpret
00:14:47.540 and define things for ourselves. A combination of the put-on and the serious, the deliberately
00:14:55.340 comic and the profoundly agonized of the bizarre and the holy, rings very true for me in my attempts
00:15:03.920 at defining the craft, at finding my place in the revolution. Stories, songs, poetry, dancing,
00:15:11.860 theater and papier-mâché are tools of both resistance and re-enchantment. We need both.
00:15:20.280 Fighting against and fighting toward. One poster for a campus WITCH meeting, 0.55
00:15:28.600 a black silhouette of a witch flying on broomstick across an orange background with a white crescent 0.88
00:15:34.560 Moon read, Witches and gypsies were the first guerrilla resistance fighters. A witch lives 0.97
00:15:41.620 and laughs in every woman. She is the free part of each of us. Maybe that's part of what 0.99
00:15:51.840 differentiates the witch from other forms of revolutionary. That recognition of the 0.75
00:15:57.600 alchemical power of laughter, the bizarre, and the holy. Our beloved papier-mâché made an
00:16:06.540 appearance when WITCH hexed Wall Street on Halloween in 1968. The costumed coven danced
00:16:13.680 their way from the New York Stock Exchange, where they demanded audience with the boss of Wall
00:16:18.680 Street himself, Satan, to Chase Bank, where they encircled the building delivering an elaborate
00:16:25.060 curse on the Dow Jones. A parade, led by a high priestess bearing a papier-mâché pig's head on 0.57
00:16:32.600 a golden platter, garnished with greenery plucked from poison money trees, made its way at dusk to
00:16:39.320 the East Village, to men's-only clubs, beauty parlours, and strip joints, leaving a trail of
00:16:45.060 WITCH stickers and feminist rage as they went. This event is generally considered to be the
00:16:51.520 founding of WITCH, but a month earlier, on October 1st, 1968, Nancy Kirshon, Robin Morgan,
00:16:58.920 Roz Payne, and Sharon Krebs appeared protesting at the House Un-American Activities Committee
00:17:04.820 hearing investigating the clashes at the 1968 Democratic Convention, and delivered a speech 0.99
00:17:10.960 as WITCH, which, Women's International Terrorist Conspiracy from Hell, with lines like,
00:17:20.660 In the sacred name of all our sister witches, the original guerrillas and resistance fighters through the ages,
00:17:27.840 we cast our vengeful magic on who-wacky judges who dare conduct a witch hunt without real witches.
00:17:35.200 They have created subpoenas envy.
00:17:38.540 Dead men sit on this committee.
00:17:40.920 We have not finished. 0.99
00:17:42.540 We have just begun.
00:17:44.980 We are the power.
00:17:47.620 In Drawing Down the Moon, Margot Adler wrote 1.00
00:17:51.080 Feminist witches have stated that witchcraft is not incompatible with politics 1.00
00:17:55.500 and further, that the craft is a religion historically conceived in rebellion 1.00
00:18:01.140 and can therefore be true to its nature only when it continues its ancient fight against oppression
00:18:09.260 Linking feminist politics with spirituality and in particular with witchcraft is not a new idea
00:18:15.300 The connection, which may be very ancient, was noticed in 1968 by the founders of WITCH,
00:18:23.120 a group of women who engaged in political and surrealist protest actions.
00:18:28.780 In its first manifesto, WITCH stated that the link between women, witchcraft, and politics is very old. 0.93
00:18:38.140 WITCH is an all-woman everything. 0.99
00:18:41.500 It's theater, revolution, magic, terror, joy, garlic flowers, spells. 0.76
00:18:47.060 It's an awareness that witches and gypsies were the original guerrilla and resistance fighters against oppression,
00:18:53.040 particularly the oppression of women, down through the ages.
00:18:57.000 Witches have always been women who dared to be groovy, courageous, aggressive, intelligent, nonconformist,
00:19:05.000 explorative, curious, independent, sexually liberated, revolutionary. This possibly explains 1.00
00:19:13.280 why nine million of them have been burned. Witches were the first friendly heads and 1.00
00:19:19.440 dealers, the first birth control practitioners and abortionists, the first alchemists, 0.83
00:19:25.840 turned dross into gold and you devalue the whole idea of money. They bowed to no man,
00:19:31.640 being the living remnants of the oldest culture of all,
00:19:35.180 one in which men and women were equal sharers in a truly cooperative society.
00:19:41.780 Before the death-dealing sexual, economic, and spiritual repression 0.53
00:19:46.600 of the imperialist phallic society took over 0.97
00:19:49.800 and began to destroy nature and human society. 1.00
00:19:55.520 Quite a manifesto.
00:19:58.740 Throughout the late 60s and early 70s, 0.97
00:20:01.240 W-I-T-C-H, brought their brand of theatrical protest to bridal fairs and inauguration events, 0.99
00:20:08.660 they invaded the Miss America pageant, unfurling a massive banner at the moment of coronation, 0.99
00:20:15.180 emblazoned with the words, Women's Liberation. And though these actions may seem trite through
00:20:21.800 a contemporary lens, Alex Cates Shulman reminds us that the Miss America pageant action drew
00:20:28.020 attention, media coverage, and most importantly, many Americans across the country saw the phrase
00:20:35.900 women's liberation for the very first time. It's impossible to know how many people saw those two
00:20:43.240 words together and thought, aha, it's not just me being insecure. Aha. Cultural change begins
00:20:53.740 with individual change. Ahas. Ideas that become collectives. WITCH was created by real people. 0.97
00:21:05.600 People whose choices we may or may not agree with. Roz Payne moved to a commune in Vermont.
00:21:12.020 Robin Morgan edited the foundational anthology Sisterhood is Powerful, but more recently
00:21:18.640 embraced turfdom. Nancy Kirshon joined the Weather Underground, a group who sometimes
00:21:24.180 used explosives to make statements. Mayim Bialik played her in the 2011 film The Chicago Eight.
00:21:31.540 Heather Booth founded the Jane Collective, securing abortion access for people in need.
00:21:37.200 We all have our own definition of radical. We can agree on some things and disagree on others.
00:21:44.040 That's what being an individual means
00:21:47.140 But WITCH was, is 0.91
00:21:50.840 Hundreds, thousands of anonymous witches who love people and hate injustice 0.89
00:21:56.820 At times, welcoming immigrants and their children here 0.53
00:22:01.120 Other times, women incensed at telephone company harassment 0.99
00:22:05.760 Women indentured to corporate hell 0.99
00:22:08.660 Women inspired to commit herstory
00:22:11.120 women intent on toppling consumer holidays, witches invoking transformative channels of
00:22:16.960 healing, women inspired to tear down constructs of hate. And the legacy continues. WITCH groups
00:22:25.120 continue to form and disband. The 2016 inauguration of America's 45th president saw a huge spike in
00:22:33.660 representation, protesters shrouded in black cloth draped from pointy hats. A Portland chapter
00:22:40.860 W-I-T-C-H-P-D-X, officially formed in November 2016 in response to oppression and injustice
00:22:49.840 and election, fear, sadness. This is their manifesto. For centuries, the dominant culture 0.99
00:22:59.120 has persecuted anyone who dares to be different. The gentle healers, the midwives, the queers,
00:23:04.760 the loners, the wise elders, the pagans, the foreigners, the wild women. Dissent is threatening 1.00
00:23:12.320 to the status quo, especially when it's shrouded in unfamiliar customs and the mysterious sacred 0.95
00:23:18.100 feminine. Those who seek to oppress and suppress us have always called us witches to silence us.
00:23:25.040 Now we step out of the shadows, embracing this word and all it stands for. A witch is a fearsome
00:23:31.900 creature, inspiring terror and awe, channeling a primal, visceral energy in the name of peace,
00:23:38.740 progress, justice, and harmony. A witch is a conduit for transformation. A witch taps into
00:23:45.760 the power within and harnesses the power without in service of a better world. A single witch is 0.98
00:23:52.240 a dangerous outlier. A coven is a force to be reckoned with. An international circle of witches 0.98
00:23:58.820 is unstoppable. Together, we are WITCHPDX, which is International Troublemaker Conspiracy from
00:24:08.520 Hell, Portland. Reviving the spirit and intentions of the 1960s organization of the same name,
00:24:14.940 we aim to use our power to fight injustice in all its intersectional forms, and help dismantle the
00:24:21.920 white supremacist patriarchal system that perpetrates it. The new generation of WITCH conjures
00:24:28.940 our collective rage, joy, grief, strength, determination, and ferocity into a force for
00:24:35.340 change. We will not conform. We will not obey. We will not be silent.
00:24:43.220 Another WITCH group met in Brooklyn to cast a curse on the Supreme Court's new judge, Brent Kavanaugh.
00:24:54.500 In 2018, WITCH Houston, as Witches Interrupting Ted Cruz's Hate, performed a binding spell on Ted Cruz at midnight of the autumn equinox in what appears to be an underground parking garage for Witches Gather, veiled in black.
00:25:12.200 In keeping with the viral, open-source nature of WITCH, the Houston chapter posted their ritual in a Google Doc for other witches to re-enact or be inspired by.
00:25:23.400 Here's a little excerpt.
00:25:25.120 Now begins the time of reaping.
00:25:29.160 The goddess is bearing, this time not a basket of flowers, but a sickle and scythe.
00:25:35.720 Now begins the time of reaping.
00:25:37.880 Every beginning has an ending. Every ending is a new beginning. Now begins the time of reaping.
00:25:46.440 We come here, to this time, and this place, to ensure that the just and unjust alike shall
00:25:55.320 harvest what they've sown. We come here to bind Raphael Edward Cruz. Now begins the time of
00:26:04.280 reaping. This past summer, pop singer Devin Cole put out WITCH, singing a chorus of woman in total 0.97
00:26:13.960 control of herself. Lori Bruno's backronym is Wisdom, Integrity, Truth, Courage, Honor. One of 0.51
00:26:21.660 our covenmates, Hope, wrote W. Wondrous weavers of life, love, and energy. I, insatiable in their
00:26:29.540 need for knowledge. T. Tantalizing to one's desires and spirit. C. Captivating the interest
00:26:36.480 of many. H. Hallowed by their sheer existence. C. W-I-T-C-H is an idea. A collective idea.
00:26:48.640 Whether you are a witch or a W-I-T-C-H, the drive is the same. Collective. Creative. Dissident. 0.65
00:26:57.780 bold, brave, political, personal, spiritual, the original guerrillas and resistance fighters
00:27:04.580 through the ages. Wherever we gather to love people and hate injustice, we bring the specter
00:27:12.640 of pointy black hats, healing and hexing, public and private actions, the raising of consciousness
00:27:20.700 with us. We are mutable, translatable, redefinable, but also permanent and timeless,
00:27:31.860 natural and supernatural, awake, aware, and challenging the status quo of a mythical norm.
00:27:40.340 Our work and our lives and our words mean what we decide they mean.
00:27:48.920 The free part of each of us, the bizarre and the holy.
00:27:55.340 We will not conform.
00:27:57.660 We will not obey.
00:28:00.120 We will not be silent.
00:28:03.160 Now begins the time of reaping.
00:28:05.960 We have not finished.
00:28:08.280 We have just begun.
00:28:10.340 we are the power we are witch
00:28:16.080 and we're back with Risa hi Risa 0.96
00:28:25.020 thanks for a fucking wicked episode I'm excited to talk about that I love these women so much 1.00
00:28:31.920 Yeah, and I also love like how we can, I mean, I probably saw people enacting that like black hat protest, you know, black and white signs without knowing that it was like the legacy of WITCH because I didn't know about them. 1.00
00:28:54.220 I didn't know that they existed until maybe like when we started doing the podcast something like
00:28:59.820 that you know when the research really gets gets deep instead of you know um
00:29:05.380 superficial is the wrong word but you know when we really were getting into researching things and
00:29:12.340 um so I learned about WITCH and then you know it's one of those things where you just like
00:29:18.640 you see it everywhere and you're like I know this I know this and especially because um those of you
00:29:25.060 listeners who have been with us since the beginning might remember this story that um I had made this
00:29:30.020 mixtape and it was sort of like the idea was that the the witch was a uh like the ultimate symbol of
00:29:37.620 intersectional feminism like the witch appears in every culture and you know and I made this
00:29:43.700 mixtape and I sent it to Risa and then maybe a few days later Risa was like I have this idea for 0.65
00:29:49.020 this podcast I was like oh like the mixtape and Risa was like huh like she hadn't even seen the
00:29:52.920 email so it's just this moment of like everything coming together in this like weird fantastical
00:29:59.920 way that makes perfect sense while also feeling like supernatural so on to another gathering
00:30:08.740 which is I saved this piece from Robin Morgan's going too far because I specifically wanted you
00:30:14.980 Risa to react to it so I'm going to read it real quick. We in WITCH always meant to do the real
00:30:24.520 research to read the anthropological religious and mythographic studies on the subject
00:30:31.020 but we never got around to it. We were too busy doing actions. We also meant to have more
00:30:38.020 consciousness raising meetings but we were too busy doing actions we meant to write some papers
00:30:44.340 of theory and analysis but we were too busy doing actions except that not having raised our own
00:30:51.800 consciousness very far out of our combat boots we didn't know what we were doing or why
00:30:58.380 i love this i love this idea and it really resonated with me for for our project like
00:31:06.520 when we started we didn't know what we were doing or why and we did it anyway so I think
00:31:15.220 you know as Robin Morgan says that has its pros and cons right yeah I I love that too it's a kind
00:31:22.700 of a loving way to approach it because you have to feel so much respect for prioritizing doing actions
00:31:30.580 um and the urgency of that um and the still the urgency that we face you know like we need
00:31:41.860 we need our action we need our direct action so profoundly um but I also like that kind of gentle
00:31:50.560 gentle reminder about the about those two other pieces right that's really well put it's like
00:31:56.520 it's our internal consciousness raising and I would say community building even if it's really
00:32:02.400 really small like our internal conversations one by one that help us understand why we're doing
00:32:08.220 what we're doing and then the research you know and I think like for us the research ends up being
00:32:14.560 these like um really specific spirals really specific dives into usually one woman's life
00:32:23.720 for one queer person's life.
00:32:27.440 And so that means, you know, I research, I think,
00:32:29.820 as a rule is always partially flawed,
00:32:33.240 is always partially partial, you know?
00:32:35.320 Like we're subject to the narrowness
00:32:37.240 of our own positionality in the network.
00:32:40.180 All we can see is sort of the shoulders we stand on
00:32:44.060 and what we've attempted to stretch out down
00:32:46.480 along the network to try to see,
00:32:47.980 but we're always blinkered.
00:32:50.920 So just being as honest about that as we can, you know, where we sit in these confluences of unearned privilege and education and stuff. 0.71
00:33:01.380 I love, too, that it's like you can prioritize doing action, like in this world of sometimes gotcha-y research, internet research, where it's like you use that word and you don't even fucking know where it came from.
00:33:19.660 and you're using this you know building on this culture whatever i think it's great to learn the 0.72
00:33:24.460 words and to educate each other and do it in whatever fucking tone you want i don't really 0.78
00:33:28.700 care but i think it's so rad to be like we didn't know but we knew we had to act we didn't know 0.83
00:33:37.180 everything but we knew we had to act yeah the magic of all of that is super interesting right
00:33:42.940 going back to that witch perspective is like you have access to a phenomenal power when you're
00:33:48.540 talking about writing and researching amplifying your voice and then amplifying it with created
00:33:53.980 symbols um amplifying it with uh protests with gathering people together around symbols and
00:34:01.120 symbolic action like that's pretty phenomenal power so you know just uh thinking about where
00:34:10.000 to channel that action where to channel that magic and that's the thing you know I think so many
00:34:14.780 people think like oh you know we constantly go back to lolly moon who said like you know it's
00:34:21.120 about finding your place in the revolution and i think so many people who are who are doing the
00:34:25.740 research who are doing the babysitting who are doing those sort of background tasks are are
00:34:31.360 there thinking like well i should be on the front lines i should be doing actions i should be doing
00:34:37.040 this but then here we have this person who led a bunch of actions and then in hindsight was like
00:34:43.540 maybe we should have been doing the research maybe we should have been sitting in smaller groups and
00:34:48.540 doing these like conscious raises consciousness raising of of telling our own story in these
00:34:53.300 small groups where everybody has a voice and and so on and so forth so I think it's really important
00:34:58.420 to note that you know that there there are so many different roles in the revolution and all of us
00:35:06.560 are constantly struggling with this notion of opportunity cost I mean we are human beings who
00:35:12.160 live in the material world and oftentimes when we make decisions it's not just the choosing one
00:35:17.440 thing but also the negating of all of those other possibilities you know the the infinite
00:35:24.160 possibilities that get negated when we make a decision so we you can't we can't we can't sit
00:35:31.640 here going well my role in the revolution isn't broad enough because we're all contending with
00:35:37.160 opportunity cost we all have to make decisions and that means that we can't do everything
00:35:42.300 despite what capitalism would would have us believe that we need to you know have it all
00:35:48.420 and do it all and constantly be grinding and these people who you know work 80 hours a day
00:35:54.260 and never sleep or somehow like lauded as heroes but like not in our world not in our world you
00:36:02.200 know it's okay to like if you know what feels right to you and again maybe it's cooking for
00:36:09.960 your neighbors and maybe it is like storming the bastille you know like but all of all of these
00:36:18.320 are important pieces and and those of you who are leaning into domesticity just know that
00:36:24.780 robin morgan on the front line of action was like maybe we should have also done this right
00:36:30.600 Yeah, I mean, there's definitely something magic that happens just in being a safe space for people to bring their kids, being a safe space for conversations about sexuality, being, you know, in places and communities where you can't really talk about witchcraft to, you know, be that person who just talks about the moon or, you know, like there, there are these countless ways that we make cracks in the pavement of the built world.
00:37:00.600 that we that we send our roots through it that we don't destroy it but we reclaim it like like trees
00:37:08.320 you know taking taking on parts of things around us to make something better more healing I love
00:37:16.260 the way the the w-i-t-c-h which is right I love the like humor um I think that that like refusing 0.95
00:37:27.840 to be made too serious is part of a witch's power yes the bizarre and the holy yeah
00:37:37.360 yeah and yeah the put on and the and the serious yeah i think having a sense of humor is is hella
00:37:45.360 witchy because like the world is absurd and part of like being being a witch and like lifting that
00:37:52.120 veil is to like be able to laugh at the absurdity of literally all things right that's like not
00:38:00.260 buying into it all too much it is a put on all of this is both real worlding and a put on you know
00:38:06.800 like i think we feel that a lot where we live uh maybe more so than i've felt it in other places
00:38:13.860 in this sense that like if we left this house be for like five years it would almost disappear
00:38:21.940 like the woods want to eat this house so badly you know the woods are just any second now they're
00:38:30.140 they're gonna they're gonna take it over we've you know we we like eke out of balance every year
00:38:35.600 um but they they eat the garden the you know the the tree roots you can't and why would you like
00:38:43.960 keep a space from more trees in the way the world is today but trying to give more and more and more
00:38:49.660 of our land to trees and you really feel like this is a living presence that we're in communication
00:38:57.540 with here and we are very small yes communication you know I'll tell you my favorite thing about
00:39:04.460 the woods um is that there's no bullshit there's no baloney in the woods the the the woods doesn't 0.84
00:39:12.580 want to eat your house because it's out to get you because it you know because you did something 0.98
00:39:17.840 wrong it's just happening it's just all happening there's no pretense it's just all happening yeah
00:39:24.880 I think I mean there's definitely species that dissimulate so I I like to highlight when
00:39:30.240 when we say like what differentiates us I'm I'm constantly wondering if there is anything beside 0.86
00:39:35.840 our own delusion about how fucking different we are you know and we'll get into that more this
00:39:41.460 season too but we're sure with dawn harroway yeah but i mean and uh and carol yeah oh right
00:39:48.420 of course yeah creative lives of animals can't wait but again maybe the delusion is is again
00:39:55.380 what separates i'm using scare quotes when i when i say separate again
00:40:00.140 but i i mean i i do want to touch on to this notion of like um because they all
00:40:11.400 i'm talking about w-i-t-c-h here because they all dress the same in these pointy hats and you know
00:40:18.180 homemade cloaks and so on that they both stood out and blended into each other you know again
00:40:28.620 a lot of you who are listening aren't in a safe place to like kick down grandma's door and yell
00:40:33.400 that you're a witch and and we get that and that's fine but um this this is part of that amazing
00:40:40.300 thing like cloaking in a group so again you're like standing out but you're also blending in
00:40:47.400 um it wouldn't have been safe for a lot of these women and people but specifically this was like a
00:40:54.620 very women-centered movement now we're in the 21st century and we're sort of moving past this like
00:41:02.420 gender essentialist language but their their language of gender essentialism was reactionary
00:41:07.860 to the gender essentialism that they were facing again I think it's so important that we look at
00:41:15.260 the real lives of these people who got into these women's liberation movements who you know were
00:41:20.860 told like you go to college so you can find a husband you have a couple kids and then that's 1.00
00:41:28.540 it that's your life you have no choices um women in Canada I believe couldn't have credit cards in
00:41:35.120 their own names until the 1970s the 1970s you know so like Odrisa and I are saying like we learn 0.62
00:41:43.920 things and then we're like oh you know in five years probably will be problematic too because
00:41:48.920 we're learning and we're growing and we're learning we're growing we're learning we're growing
00:41:53.600 um but it I think it's so important once again to like to look at the real history of what these
00:42:01.980 people were up against and to look at the tools that they used to fight it you know now we're a
00:42:08.200 little bit safer maybe um to say i'm a witch you know you're you're not gonna get burned in the
00:42:14.580 town square maybe you are especially in many places in the world but you know where we live
00:42:21.220 you're probably not gonna get burned in the town square but you might lose you know access to your
00:42:28.160 family members, you might lose the respect of your community. So when we can sort of,
00:42:36.640 and think of this however you like, you know, literally or symbolically, if we can put on our
00:42:41.780 pointy hats and our black cloaks and sort of blend in together as like a, as like an amorphous
00:42:48.060 blob of witches that is, is, is a thing in and of itself. I like to keep that in my consciousness,
00:42:55.240 you know Risa you talk all the time about hiding in plain sight and I think this is a great example
00:43:00.980 of that like I'm here you can see me but you don't know what what's under the veil yeah I I I love
00:43:09.580 that so much too I I love thinking about ways I mean you're certainly correct that there are still
00:43:16.220 in the world and in North America a great many places where it's not safe to be different
00:43:25.180 period you know and which which stands for the protection of that protection of all that's
00:43:31.400 marginalized and and stand in community with that there are certainly certainly places and i mean
00:43:36.060 with the kind of christian fascism that's become popular white supremacist christian fascism has
00:43:43.020 become popular in the united states it's certainly there are many places and in many families
00:43:49.020 where you could not say that word um and where your possibilities your your potential the world
00:43:56.260 that you see in front of you as a woman are incredibly different and gendered um from other
00:44:02.700 people so i do like to imagine like where are the spaces where you could allow yourself even a moment
00:44:10.840 of putting on that powerful freedom you know like could you do it just for halloween
00:44:18.680 could you just be all black all black everything for Halloween you know could you could you like
00:44:26.880 walk down the streets where the kids are walking with a tall pointy hat and a black cloak and a
00:44:31.760 black veil and just feel the the transgressive power within the safety container of how of the
00:44:39.560 commercialization of Samhain like is there a space where you could even if it's just that home in
00:44:45.340 your room like is there a space where you could put that on I think we talk about that in the
00:44:49.980 ritual or Samhain in the book is like call in call in a future for yourself and what that looks like
00:44:59.860 call in a version of yourself that gives you power and then sit with a mirror play
00:45:07.180 see what you want to put on just for this one dark liminal time what can you call in what can
00:45:16.260 you put on and how does it allow you to carry a power with you when you are hiding in plain sight
00:45:21.800 i am so excited about this notion i mean you know like mirrors are are super magical we call them
00:45:28.200 portals and like scrying tools but i hadn't really thought about this notion of using a mirror to not
00:45:35.720 feel alone like if you are alone in your witch costume stand in front of a mirror and then you
00:45:43.620 are no longer alone you are with two witches and all you need is two to make a coven I think
00:45:48.500 totally oh my gosh so I think about I think I got this from Veronica Varlow but I I do this
00:45:54.100 sometimes standing in the mirror I noticed that I often don't make direct eye contact with myself
00:45:59.920 when I look at the mirror I I'm looking at you know does you know that I angle my head a certain
00:46:05.640 way I'm doing like lots of like sort of cutesy voguing gestures for those who can't see me but
00:46:10.540 um and and I realized you know standing lighting a candle looking directly in my own eyes
00:46:20.120 and then saying my full name I am full name and then daughter of and kin to and then call
00:46:30.540 in whoever I feel kinship to um I feel way less alone I call in the kin that I'm requiring to
00:46:43.500 support me which i got from our salute um vita she's like you know some of our problematic 0.98
00:46:50.560 ancestors they make good on shit they fucked up earlier by coming through for us now yes yes we've 0.97
00:47:00.420 talked to a couple people about this because again like maybe someday we will be those problematic 1.00
00:47:05.660 ancestors you know we know better and we do better but um someone once told us that they
00:47:12.620 they want they want to make right that or that you can help them yeah to make right that instead
00:47:22.700 of saying oh you know my problematic grandfather did this and that you can sit down with grandpa
00:47:26.700 and say you know I forgive you you didn't know any better so you you know that's what you you
00:47:32.860 were just trying to get by like we all are um maybe you made mistakes maybe you made bad choices
00:47:38.260 and honestly like recently I've been doing that for myself too you know Amy like maybe you've
00:47:46.000 made some mistakes and maybe you've made some bad choices but like I forgive you it's been hugely
00:47:52.400 powerful for me I I feel that so much and and I think that you know that other piece um from
00:48:02.800 Veronica of Arlo's grandmother that I love from that traditional bohemian magic. And we've heard
00:48:09.180 other witches talk about this in different ways before, but is that on the other side, on the
00:48:13.860 spirit side, on the flip side of that, you know, Mobius strip that is time and in witch philosophy
00:48:22.460 and I think um contemporary physics um all of time exists right so you're always you're always
00:48:32.920 in community you're you can always be in communication with 16 year old you and 80
00:48:40.380 year old you like the most powerful ancestor you call out to is yourself because as the
00:48:47.000 charge of the goddess goes I've been with thee from the beginning and I'm with thee now you know
00:48:51.680 like truly there is that version of you that's in your genetic makeup that exists in the mobius
00:48:58.820 strip of time and it's okay to be like four-year-old risa i need you 16 year old risa 1.00
00:49:05.920 thank you for your fearlessness i forgive you for all the dumb shit you said 0.97
00:49:10.040 yeah and i mean we can even do this like it helps me to um think of like doing things ahead of time 0.95
00:49:18.620 is doing future me a favor you know oh I'll make breakfast tonight and then it's ready for future
00:49:24.280 me and so in that way like I I'm being my own ancestor I am this like spirit of self from the
00:49:31.740 past that is like influencing how tomorrow is gonna go for me oh one of my favorite little
00:49:37.660 spells for for future reset and you can do it this is a good time of year to do it is if you're
00:49:43.780 putting away summer jackets if you're putting away a season season stuff you can put like a
00:49:50.260 little five bucks a little 20 bucks special rock stick it in your pockets for future future you
00:49:59.600 it's such a treasure when you're going through them and you're pulling out your favorite
00:50:03.380 summer jacket or whatever that you're like oh pastries i'm gonna buy myself an ice cream cone
00:50:10.480 right how about we do things simply for the delight of our future selves
00:50:15.740 yeah and i do again i want to underscore like there are a million different roles in the
00:50:25.460 revolution and you know the one that resonates with you is the one that you should be focused on
00:50:30.180 something that runs through my head a lot is a quote that is half gil scott heron and half
00:50:36.280 Risa Dickens which is the revolution will not be televised but it will be babysat I think about
00:50:43.640 that a lot but before we go I want to I want to um take this from wild witches don't get the blues
