00:01:05.100 Hi, I'm Kate Verlant.
00:01:06.540 I'm Jacqueline Novak.
00:01:07.640 And this is POOG, an ongoing conversation about wellness between two obsessive friends.
00:01:12.380 Two untamable intellects.
00:01:14.160 This is our hobby. 0.97
00:01:15.000 This is our hell.
00:01:15.860 This is our naked desire for free products.
00:01:18.140 This is POOG.
00:01:19.340 Today's topic, loosely speaking, countertop water filtration.
00:01:22.920 the effect of consciousness on water the pronunciation of Evian
00:01:28.200 before we get into it before we get into water we do have a responsibility to tell
00:01:36.160 pook nation that's you the community that there might be a couple sound issues with this the
00:01:42.180 clarity of our voice right now it feels so good enjoy it while it lasts folks because it's about
00:01:47.100 to go away it's about to drop it and drop i just want to say it's not that bad you know don't skip
00:01:51.180 ahead. You're going to be fine. You're not going to be swallowed by chaos. You're going to hear us.
00:01:55.800 It's going to be fine. But we just don't want you to think that we don't know. We don't want you to
00:01:59.860 think that we don't think there are sound issues. Having dropped in that addendum, I think it's
00:02:04.240 time. It's time. Enjoy water. What if, what if health, everything that we're chasing, health,
00:02:14.700 beauty, wellness, to be energized, to be optimized, is it all as simple as just being
00:02:19.200 hydrated? All the powders and lotions and rituals and the food, what if it's all just eclipsed by
00:02:27.540 the importance of hydration? If we're hydrated, then are we just cured? Well, I'm notoriously
00:02:32.780 dehydrated. I know. And I'm notoriously hydrated. And I suffer. I do okay. Actually, I think I do
00:02:38.560 pretty good considering how little I hydrate. They say an ounce for every pound. So that's
00:02:44.340 90 ounces for me. Yeah, that's 86 for me right over here hovering around 86. But I have an uncle,
00:02:53.640 not to brag, and he works in the field of psychiatry and I'll never forget. I actually
00:02:59.960 have an uncle as well. I just want to drop that in. I do. Wow. Actually two. I only have one,
00:03:04.720 so you can only imagine how hard that is. And he once remarked that, because he deals with people
00:03:11.940 who are suffering with really severe mental illness, that the leading cause of anxiety?
00:03:18.720 Dehydration. I mean, let that sink in. Well, in my search for antidepressants or the right
00:03:26.940 cocktail of meds, it was always almost surprising to me that my doctor never said, are you drinking
00:03:32.220 any water? Of course not. Because I was drinking basically none. And that's what's so terrifying.
00:03:37.100 what if the answer is that simple? What if all of the way we chase health, the way we chase
00:03:42.780 optimization and beauty, what if it all came down to water? What if the powders and the creams and
00:03:50.000 the lotions and the jogging and the running and the yoga and the praying, what if it all means
00:03:55.980 nothing? What if it all boils down to water? No pun intended because you do boil water.
00:04:01.740 But what if there is, isn't there something so paralyzing and freeing at the same time?
00:04:09.800 Not that there isn't freedom and paralysis, of course, that's a separate episode.
00:04:13.640 But isn't there something overwhelming? What if it just were that simple? What if it's just the
00:04:17.620 goddamn water coming out of your goddamn spigot? That's the healing. That's the healer. Your healer 1.00
00:04:23.540 is free. Your healer is free. We know, I think we, I mean, key to this podcast, okay, is the fact
00:04:31.540 that we know how to heal. Okay. We know how to be well because we are blessed with health,
00:04:36.820 right? Okay. We're blessed with health and therefore, okay. I was going to say was we know
00:04:42.600 what we need to do if we want to feel good and whatever. Right. And all the things that we want
00:04:47.680 to optimize, you and me know, it's like water, diet, exercise, as you always say, community.
00:04:55.660 And I always leave that off the list. I always forget. There was a community. I'm like, I'm like,
00:05:00.800 what okay no we need to be connected to a community in order to really feel healthy
00:05:05.140 and to be well takes a village um honey it takes the west village okay i'll have a martini yeah
00:05:11.240 that's okay
00:05:14.800 yeah and by the way i almost said okay you almost said wait i want to know what village you almost
00:05:26.980 said no i was like it takes the west village i mean i'm like well that's a shirt that's a coaster
00:05:31.880 at least oh it's actually not it makes no sense well no like it takes the west village to raise
00:05:37.920 a child would be sort of like a heinous tote bag for like a private elementary school or daycare
00:05:43.420 like okay balducci's this is maybe a new york very niche is balducci's still up and running
00:05:52.300 wait i always forget what balducci's is balducci's was like a dean and deluca right it was like a
00:05:59.340 dean and deluca copycat that was somehow more it was somehow less luxurious and more luxurious
00:06:05.600 and i used to go there and get like eight dollar tuna salad and then go watch sex in the city
00:06:10.320 and be like and i you remember the day that sex in the city came back post 9 11 because i sure do
00:06:20.440 Because I was waiting to see, what are they going to do?
00:06:23.820 Are they going to remove the memory of the towers?
00:06:27.100 No, specifically from the opening credits.
00:06:29.380 They kept it, which is exactly the right move.
00:06:32.060 Unfortunately, they didn't keep it, Kate.
00:06:33.800 That's a lie.
00:06:35.900 They took out the towers?
00:06:38.380 And replaced it with, I was about to say the Eiffel Tower.
00:06:43.540 No, they replaced it with Empire State Building.
00:06:47.660 Oh.
00:06:48.500 I was like, what are they going to do?
00:06:49.660 and i was like that's so hurts but that's that's truly perverse and disrespectful yeah and like
00:06:56.340 as though people who were traumatized by 9-11 and i don't mean just kind of like the general
00:07:02.660 trauma i mean people who were like i lost someone as though the sight of the towers would be like
00:07:06.960 i almost forgot and now i remember no right it's like it's like people can handle that it's so
00:07:14.040 much worse to take it away okay anyway um yeah and then the subbing in i think the replacement
00:07:19.440 hurts more than the notable absence okay so we can handle seeing the towers you know we can't
00:07:28.360 handle dehydration okay and i'll just say not to brag i have an uncle not to brag he is a
00:07:35.260 psychiatrist and deals with the super unwell okay so he really deals with people who are really
00:07:41.060 suffering and he told me or slash he told my dad who told me at dinner when i was 12
00:07:45.800 that Uncle Jeff says dehydration is the leading cause of anxiety. And the words entered me never
00:07:53.380 left. And I have tried to hydrate or super hydrate. As I say, certain times in our lives
00:07:59.940 or in our day are times for super hydration. I actually see an air an airplane ride as chance
00:08:05.400 to super hydrate. Well, actually, I see it as a true time not to be the joke wearing the sheet
00:08:12.580 mask okay in first you know what i mean okay but honestly as a time to hydrate wildly because you
00:08:18.940 know it gets so dry in there supposedly i know he must protect at all costs and arrive there
00:08:23.980 more hydrated than he left i love peeing on a plane i'm an aisle seat for life i live in the
00:08:30.500 aisle i might as well set up shop in that toilet you know where i go the window you know why because
00:08:37.160 I never drink anything and I never have to pee and I fall asleep. No, no. As we'll get into in
00:08:43.040 this conversation, I mean, you have always been an impressive sort of Los Angeles raised water girl
00:08:49.180 and I have not. Okay. And the only way into water for me, I mean, into this, you know, episode in 0.93
00:08:55.240 general will be through the spiritual. I love that. I just want to say, don't you think hydration
00:09:00.240 is generational because well my mother i i she's the core the root of my dehydration first of all
00:09:07.560 i realized something when you're talking okay okay something inspired me what do babies drink
00:09:13.560 water no i think they only get it from the milk whoa well when you realize that there's water in
00:09:20.700 food that's a huge moment for all of us when you realize there's water i mean from from from taking
00:09:27.080 care of cats. That's why you're supposed to give cats wet food, not dry. The dental hygiene
00:09:31.400 elements of dry food is a lie. It does not scrape away the tartar and it's an absolute dental chew
00:09:38.900 lie. But yeah, the water in the food is big. That's why I sometimes think, I think chronic
00:09:44.260 dehydration has led me to be an extreme fruit addict. I'm thirsty and that's why I eat 10
00:09:49.620 apples. Oh my God. The water in apples. I mean, don't get me started on watermelon.
00:09:55.000 okay i mean have you tasted it have you tasted it folks damn is it damn is that how what does 0.97
00:10:05.480 watermelon taste like to you there's something really kind of like perverse about the way 0.98
00:10:11.700 watermelon tastes like there's something about it that's like deeply like erotic and also kind
00:10:18.280 of scary due to due to the water that cannot make if you the moment that you crunch down on a bite
00:10:25.200 of watermelon right it streams down the sides of the cheek oh of course hence the perversion yeah
00:10:30.520 i think i mean i think that must be yeah i love that why does watermelon erotic why is it erotic
00:10:37.200 yeah there it is no i i also it's a constant search for sweetness i'll just say the watermelon
00:10:42.300 the tasty watermelon we've all had it we search for it we're all slapping we're the communal
00:10:47.440 gesture of slapping the watermelons at the grocery store and locking eyes with a stranger
00:10:52.220 who's also slapping the melon here for no one knows yeah no one really knows what they're
00:10:56.900 slapping for but then we all we're striving for the sweetness and rarely do we ever get it
00:11:02.460 much like life you mean the perfect chasing the perfect wave like the surfers yeah the purple the
00:11:07.640 perfect watermelon yeah i mean and by the way we can wrap it up on watermelon but i'll just say
00:11:11.700 that fruit is a huge inspiration like i just sometimes you think about fruit does fruit not
00:11:19.100 make you want or at least force you to believe in god god as nature blah blah absolutely and
00:11:25.940 as i've always said fruit is nature's candy oh wait this line sucks i just remembered this line
00:11:33.960 stuff. What is it? It's except for when it's next to candy. Okay. Then the fruit is basically an 0.51
00:11:42.900 asparagus. I mean, it's not even true. I don't believe that. It's an old line. You know, when
00:11:47.900 you go for something because it's saying something at all, but it's not like it takes the West
00:11:54.220 village. Yeah. But yeah. So there is hydration to be found in food. We know this, but the real
00:12:03.720 hydration it all comes back to the big old mama source agua okay h2o folks it's coming out your 0.99
00:12:11.620 sink it's coming out of the goddamn ground and yet what always freezes me in my tracks and leads me 0.95
00:12:17.240 just to a place of immediate stress is the issues surrounding water purity right filtration 0.99
00:12:22.660 the water's poison right and of course in certain areas the water truly is poison but i'm talking
00:12:27.520 about kind of a more benevolent poison that's like oh no you're fine now but in 10 years 0.94
00:12:31.940 see you at radiation bitch like it's so scary it's so scary and that leads me to like I was 0.94
00:12:39.120 recently in New York City where I lived for 10 years almost eight let's round up to 10 famously 0.99
00:12:44.220 famously yeah famously but I was in New York drinking the tap water famously so pure right
00:12:50.440 and I was in Greenpoint where the water's poison though for those New York tap water is for anyone
00:12:56.640 who grew up in that area we're always celebrity of the tap world they you know they've talked
00:13:01.500 about bottling our water um it's like they do it's called pull and spring yeah i was in green
00:13:09.360 point where the water is famously poisoned due to all the like industrial like stuff going on
00:13:14.740 green point and the water tasted so bad i wanted to be a good house guest so i wasn't going to go
00:13:19.060 buy bottled water due to the of course environmental implications and waste of bottled water which i
00:13:24.560 and i have been able to eradicate my dependence on bottled water through my use of countertop
00:13:30.000 filtration systems that we'll get to. But my hydration levels plummeted. I didn't want to
00:13:35.640 drink the water because it tasted so bad and it was so clearly poison. I was breaking out. I was
00:13:40.020 crying. It was really hard. Breaking out is always your sign that you've done something toxic,
00:13:46.240 I feel like. You're always like, I went to dairy and I broke out. Although now dairy for me is
00:13:51.960 a huge cornerstone of health because dairy brings so much joy. And sometimes joy is the way to
00:13:57.720 health. And so cheddar for me is a vitamin now, but now this is the mystical. This is the mystical
00:14:04.420 where what you believe you're putting in becomes a ritualistic act of, you know, imbuing an object
00:14:12.100 with a thing, telling your body that it's feeding you. And that's why you have to follow. You have
00:14:17.560 to follow. I mean, my dad always said when I was a kid, and I really appreciate it. I've told you
00:14:22.020 this, but it's like, you got to follow your hankerings, but it's true. Like pleasure is good
00:14:26.220 for us yes within reason of course you know but I am I hate within reason I hate you know I'm I'm
00:14:33.220 I'm a hedonist I just mean like you know I'm trying to yeah don't know and I go you know I
00:14:38.300 go to the most extreme like you know I go to the like if you have to take a very toxic medication
00:14:43.260 like label it with like the words infinite love and gratitude okay and that's because I was
00:14:48.680 profoundly influenced I'm trying to think if this was the start I think it was simultaneous reading
00:14:53.380 of quantum physics books, and the presence of Dr. Emoto's work in, I can't remember if it was,
00:15:00.060 I think it was in The Secret, but I'm not sure. But it was Dr. Emoto's work, which is my most,
00:15:06.280 this is probably the most excited I get about water, okay, is charging the water, okay? Now,
00:15:12.380 what does that mean? So Dr. Emoto would charge the water, so to speak, or he would place glasses of
00:15:18.380 water on different words, or he'd play different music for different water. You'd play someone
00:15:23.500 saying, um, I hate your face. Okay. Okay. And like things like that, okay. He'd play that to
00:15:31.040 all these different experiments, prayer over water, you know, all of it. And so when you drink
00:15:35.600 that, I hate your face water, you get sad. No, well, he didn't go so far as to say that because
00:15:41.300 you know, he was aiming for the science of it. Okay. But what he, what he did was then he froze
00:15:47.240 that water. And when you freeze water and you look at it under a microscope, there's crystals
00:15:51.000 formed, right? Yeah. Okay. And the crystals spelled out, fuck you, bitch. Okay. The crystals
00:15:57.840 that were imbued with hate, okay, were barely crystals. They were organically disgusting
00:16:02.380 shapes, okay? I don't know what scum would look like if it developed on a shower wall, you know? 0.95
00:16:10.020 I mean, and then the question becomes, well, is that just our notions of beauty being implanted 0.85
00:16:14.420 it onto the crystal. Who knows? Who cares? But disgusting, whatever. And then the ones that had
00:16:19.080 the beautiful words or the prayer or whatever were forming into gorgeous crystals. Okay.
00:16:25.100 And so I see that and that's the most sensationalized version. It's in the secret.
00:16:29.860 No one is excited to hear me defend an idea that I, because I saw it in the secret, but
00:16:35.520 the quantum stuff does support it, which is, and that's real, that's real science. Okay. They have
00:16:41.560 not answered for the quantum weirdness and that's a that's a technical term quantum weirdness
00:16:46.920 quantum weirdness is a technical term okay basically it's also my band
00:16:50.640 uh don't give it more than basically conscious thank you consciousness no i was pulling myself
00:16:59.460 back i was trying to find my point okay and then good good call i mean you know consciousness
00:17:04.180 affects matter consciousness collapses the possibility that is the state of you know
00:17:09.680 the particles surrounding the atom the quanta whatever collapses it into a specific thing
00:17:14.000 observation expectation these form our world okay so the only way i can inspire myself to drink
00:17:20.340 water because the boring truth of hydration being good is not exciting enough to me i have to
00:17:25.700 activate the imagination and so for me charging water up with a sentiment dropping a crystal in
00:17:31.540 there usually i mean i've been a little afraid of that but in theory if you could do it with a word
00:17:36.800 you know under the bottle then do it that way i mean if you buy into intentionality then or
00:17:42.860 divination okay all of these things the the different tools the tea leaves the you know
00:17:49.640 whatever whatever the tool is like it's like which it's like the magic you create yourself
00:17:54.560 is the most powerful magic right that's like an idea so if i choose to buy in to the gua sha to
00:18:00.560 the potion to the tincture to the snake oil i mean you know we're pro snake oil around here
00:18:04.180 that that is meaningful. You are doing something. So when someone tries to tell me, I mean,
00:18:09.820 it's like when someone tries to tell me something's a placebo, not realizing that that doesn't
00:18:13.720 mean you're not having the effect in your body. It means it's essentially as effective.
00:18:19.120 Yeah, exactly. Totally. You know, and we'll drive that home every, every goddamn app.
00:18:26.060 imbued I've imbued cheddar with I have imbued and let's be clear it is organic cheddar okay 0.97
00:18:35.340 I'm not suicidal but I have imbued the cheddar with love and with a feeling that the cheddar
00:18:42.600 is good for me because I love it so much and it's good to eat things that you love
00:18:46.740 and guess who's not breaking out from the cheddar me absolutely I mean I always I feel
00:18:52.700 you once said something about cherry pie like if you're eating cherry pie with with joy like you
00:18:56.860 know like you burn it bypasses if you eat cherry pie with joy there are no calories similarly when
00:19:04.180 we talk about certain products right or certain things that we buy or we buy into right you're
00:19:10.240 endowing that purchase with special meaning for example there is something this is like the and
00:19:16.440 of course there's a sinister element of this of like expensive things feel more magical or something
00:19:21.660 like and that's of course sick like that's you know it's also magic you're willing to participate
00:19:27.320 in right i mean right like if you're paying the psychic versus not paying the psychic
00:19:32.200 you are in viewing um the experience with more meaning for you you know and that that's something
00:19:40.480 a life coach which once said to me to try to up his fee so i recognize you know the dark side
00:19:45.240 right he was like of course like you want the you want my fee to be um a little uncomfortable
00:19:50.840 a little uncomfortable but also i'll just say there's also something you know what i think
00:19:55.080 really feels good when something's free absolutely when i look at that price tag and i go oh when i
00:20:03.860 look at something i go this is retailing for 400 and i have it for free honey it's almost like i
00:20:10.320 paid two grand for it with what it's doing for me and so when we when we come back actually i want
00:20:16.160 to talk about a certain countertop water filter that was so graciously gifted to to us and that
00:20:22.820 i'm drinking and by the way i love it but i want to be clear i didn't pay for it but i just want
00:20:28.020 to say that the fact that it was free has aided has been a huge gift and has almost pushed me
00:20:35.680 to hydrate more pulling out of the conversation just to send you into uh what some fans have
00:20:40.120 called their favorite part of the show, the ads.
00:20:45.020 This is Ryder Strong,
00:20:46.420 and I have a new podcast called The Red Weather.
00:20:49.080 It was many and many a year ago
00:20:51.980 in a kingdom by the sea.
00:20:54.340 In 1995, my neighbor, Anna Trainor,
00:20:56.880 disappeared from a commune.
00:20:58.180 It was hard to wrap your head around.
00:20:59.380 It was nature and trees and praying and drugs.
00:21:03.140 So no, I am not your guru.
00:21:06.940 And back then, I lied to my parents.
00:21:09.220 i lied to police i lied to everybody there were years right where i could not say your name i've
00:21:15.020 decided to go back to my hometown in northern california interview my friends family talk to
00:21:19.160 police journalists whomever i can to try to find out what actually happened isn't it a little bit
00:21:24.520 weird that they obsess over hippies in the woods and not the obvious boyfriend they have had this
00:21:29.080 case for 30 years i'll teach you sons of to come around here and my wife boom boom this is the red
00:21:36.640 weather listen to the red weather on the iheart radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your
00:21:43.180 podcasts and we're back from the ad yes now i know we spoke of you know to pay a lot for something
00:21:54.720 is exciting there's free there's paying a lot and then there's a gift and that's how does that feel
00:22:01.840 you know what about a gift okay i have a gift for you sorry uh are you excited get me what is that
00:22:09.740 what is that it's from tamra la ayurvedic copper water bottle i'm listening okay you ready
00:22:19.620 oh look i'm sure on her it's literal copper don't confuse this for the color copper
00:22:25.080 this is the element copper and then yours i got you the third eye one so clarity so carved onto
00:22:36.340 the bottle itself is imagery that represents the third eye and then my hope is that you'll fill it
00:22:45.320 up with your purified water and then you charge it up with the more specific intentionality of
00:22:55.880 clarity. Now, see, cause I get bored by imbuing water with love. Okay. I love that. I need some
00:23:03.160 clarity. So the idea is I pour the water into the copper clarity bottle and then that will set the
00:23:08.400 intention of clarity. And as I drink the water, I will not only hydrate, but I will achieve more
00:23:12.600 clarity i love it open the third eye i'm gonna drive by and pick it up tamara copper la um i
00:23:19.200 met the owner and creator at tamara copper la on instagram she was a joy very into the bottles i
00:23:26.980 got one i just want to say you're doing a major shout out and you paid for those bottles sometimes
00:23:32.660 you get a shout out some brands might get by sending stuff for free to headquarters and we
00:23:38.940 have just constructed we just broke ground yesterday at the pook headquarters it's a large
00:23:43.000 mailbox predominantly it's largely just our individual homes which is where the gifts are
00:23:47.380 sent all right well i think it's time to tell them what's going in the bottle right right right
00:23:51.500 the bottle will be nothing without what's in it as the saying goes what's going in the bottle is
00:23:57.820 of course water and i've been you know traumatized over the years by the research i've done about
00:24:04.500 water and the toxins and the metals and the poisons that lurk in some, how could something
00:24:10.540 so clear be so filled with trash? And so I, a certain item that I arrived at on my, in my
00:24:18.060 research was this filtration system called the AquaTrue, which is a reverse osmosis countertop
00:24:23.500 system. And, you know, in a shocking train of events, they have gifted us too because of my
00:24:30.480 begging online doesn't the water taste good though it tastes sweet and delicious not too
00:24:36.740 sweet of course yeah similar to me to you know one of my favorites smart water it has a round
00:24:42.380 it has a round sauce does have a round flavor but sweet round and i say sweet i mean i only
00:24:48.800 mean comparatively it sounds disgusting right it goes down easy it goes down easy god it's
00:24:53.340 wet as hell but here's what's so weird about the water it's almost not wet do you know what i mean
00:24:57.860 like it immediately absorbs into the body it's definitely no it's not a super wet water
00:25:03.940 it's just like very like it's that pure neutral it just gets in there yeah i don't know what's
00:25:12.020 crazy about this system though that may shock some people is that there are two tanks you fill
00:25:16.440 up the tank right you put it in the machine and then it filters out the good water that you want
00:25:21.800 to drink into one tank and then in one other tank is like the trash water it's and it's so
00:25:27.960 shocking to be like all of that is filled with impurities that's shocking and genius uh it's
00:25:34.140 genius as a marketing piece for me yeah it's a point of difference where the other is implying
00:25:40.120 that they're all being caught in the carbon filter of the brita exactly the uh the implication that
00:25:46.820 the water's good now it's been clean yeah aqua true's like no all this water is bad
00:25:51.020 yeah this water is good it's crazy you're juicing the water you're juicing the water
00:25:55.860 for a tiny for a tiny thimble of it exactly and then the pulp water i have a question the trash
00:26:03.880 that's left behind are you watering your plants with it i was just gonna go there okay i have no
00:26:09.380 plants i don't support life other than my own okay i do too many spells around here and the
00:26:14.380 plants would just suck it up you know what i mean don't you think i can i googled it couldn't find
00:26:18.660 i'm sure the plants are fine with it i mean of course the plants are fine with it oh here's a
00:26:22.820 here's actually here's a little confession corner i have a corner for the confession corner
00:26:26.780 zing zing bing i'm filling up my hot water maker with tap like my coffee i make with tap
00:26:35.580 thoughts i am literally shocked considering my house has become completely aqua true okay we
00:26:43.060 have to cycle through everything our espresso maker is filled with aqua true water obviously
00:26:48.000 my cat mabel's water okay so you're basically you're saying yeah why wouldn't i i guess because
00:26:52.940 i'm treating the aqua true water like it's so it's so precious that i'm like but i should just
00:26:57.140 be drinking that in my coffee you're right you could you know but you could argue that in the
00:27:02.440 water it's not boiling it though for coffee in that machine if you're boiling it it takes a
00:27:07.380 bubbling it's bubbling in your machine it's bubbling in there you're using a french press 0.99
00:27:12.980 you know i i'm i'm vehemently anti-french press i've talked about this for years it's a fool's 0.98
00:27:19.980 game and it's um it's absolutely it won't stay hot it tastes like goddamn tea i'm not here to 0.97
00:27:26.460 talk about you're not sleeping it long enough i think i am sure i and i don't want to deal with 0.71
00:27:33.860 the coffee grounds everywhere cascading on my face having to clean it no no cleaning it is
00:27:41.460 is quite literally hell um i won't engage in that culture what i do is i is i do a percolator by the
00:27:48.920 way it's not fancy like i have like a huge carafe that i bought goddamn ikea in 1984 before i was
00:27:55.920 even born and i do a cone and i drip it i drip it on it i do it i do a drip okay but a paper
00:28:04.020 filter are you cleaning grounds out of something it's just i use i use paper filter in a glass
00:28:10.340 like you know cone thing yeah i've seen those chemex or no need to say not chemex it's all
00:28:16.840 i'm using kind of third party oh no but kid it also maintains oh no i was gonna say it maintains
00:28:22.000 your machine but again you're not using machine no i'm not using machine but i just wanted to go
00:28:25.620 back to say that i'm using a boiler as an electric kettle i used to be anti-electric kettle i found
00:28:31.440 a gauche i was like i'm not a protestant minister i'm not gonna use an electric kettle i'm virginia
00:28:37.120 goddamn wolf and i want it i want it bubbling up the old-fashioned way no and a minister what you 0.97
00:28:43.420 picture because i feel like the electric kettle okay whatever damn water they're using at the 0.99
00:28:47.660 church okay okay not using the holy water for the for the coffees in the basement i doubt no 0.79
00:28:52.980 but by the way that makes me think holy water is holy water imbued with christ allegedly
00:28:58.940 and then the wine too body of christ cup of crunk or whatever cup of um salvation 0.98
00:29:06.780 that's christ's goddamn blood you're drinking right body the host the cracker is his foot 0.96
00:29:14.700 like you're eating his thigh it's his body and the wine is his blood so this is a classic ritual 0.99
00:29:21.080 of imbuing certain items with meaning and giving them certain healing properties some people think
00:29:27.260 holy water is a joke you know some people get the little thing um you know the little vial i guess
00:29:33.120 you can get like it was blessed by the pope you pay for it it's a souvenir from the vatican
00:29:37.640 you know and the question is does it hold does you see this is devastating are you ready i think
00:29:45.300 this is a radical point okay okay all the people doubting the holy water it might be affecting the
00:29:50.120 holy water. And that is so sad. Stop doubting my holy water. Their consciousness is de-imbuing it.
00:29:56.200 That's why I honestly sometimes return to the fact that you have to keep your spiritual practices
00:30:00.440 to yourself because there's danger when you, I don't know, when you involve others, when you,
00:30:08.080 well, right. There's the danger of the scoffing of them doubting your water and that affecting
00:30:12.380 your water. Doubting your water. Like if the Pugh listeners as a whole doubt the water that's
00:30:18.780 in your aqua true i believe that could spiritually influence our water and then here's the danger
00:30:22.940 scary here's the danger this is why see this is so messed up this is why i feel the need to
00:30:29.240 communicate to the listeners that the water is purified via a scientific it's like i don't give 0.87
00:30:34.460 a shit about the science i'd take tap water and imbue it with my magic rituals and believe and 0.55
00:30:38.660 know that because only one singular consciousness is acting upon that water that is pure however 0.99
00:30:44.760 to protect myself from the doubters out there.
00:30:48.660 I have to tell them that it's purified water. 1.00
00:30:51.900 Damn. 0.99
00:30:53.140 I just want to say to those listening, 1.00
00:30:54.940 do not doubt my water.
00:30:58.320 Because you are harming me.
00:31:00.140 You are harming me.
00:31:02.000 Do not doubt my water.
00:31:03.840 Don't doubt mine either.
00:31:05.200 And honestly, if you already have,
00:31:06.440 your punishment is we're going to commercial.
00:31:08.500 Oh, hey, you doubt my water? 0.99
00:31:10.440 Welcome to hell.
00:31:11.400 It's commercial time.
00:31:12.280 Honestly, I just want to say that if you're doubting my water,
00:31:18.400 why don't you think about what that says about you as we go to commercial?
00:31:24.340 This is Ryder Strong, and I have a new podcast called The Red Weather.
00:31:28.400 It was many and many a year ago in a kingdom by the sea.
00:31:33.480 In 1995, my neighbor, Anna Trainor, disappeared from a commune.
00:31:37.440 It was hard to wrap your head around.
00:31:38.860 It was nature and trees and praying and drugs.
00:31:42.280 So no, I am not your guru.
00:31:46.280 And back then, I lied to my parents, I lied to police, I lied to everybody.
00:31:51.120 There were years, Ryder, where I could not say your name.
00:31:54.120 I've decided to go back to my hometown in Northern California, interview my friends, family, talk to police, journalists, whomever I can, to try to find out what actually happened.
00:32:02.960 Isn't it a little bit weird that they obsess over hippies in the woods and not the obvious boyfriend?
00:32:07.560 They have had this case for 30 years. 1.00
00:32:10.320 I'll teach you sons of bitches. Come around here and my wife. 1.00
00:32:13.500 Boom. Boom. This is The Red Weather. 1.00
00:32:17.800 Listen to The Red Weather on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:32:28.560 Jacqueline here to rescue you from the ad break. It is time to rejoin the conversation.
00:32:33.240 So as we've been talking about imbuing things with meaning or, you know, there's no greater
00:32:39.280 example than this potentially than the world of branded bottled water, right?
00:32:44.680 Because what is a brand?
00:32:46.240 What is a brand?
00:32:47.200 There's no more magical branding.
00:32:49.480 Magical branding is at work so insanely with bottled water.
00:32:54.420 You have very strong opinions about the hierarchy of supermarket water.
00:33:00.000 but i want to go through all the brands okay and get your perspectives on them
00:33:04.060 all right so let's start with avion the classic 90s well avion avion sorry i don't know why i'm
00:33:14.160 saying avion maybe because you know sounds very like divorcee like yeah avion feels like a very
00:33:20.420 sexy way to say avion it's very sure it's the sharon stone of the bottled water world yes has
00:33:26.460 a very specific flavor it tastes like silk it tastes like like paper kind of there's that it's
00:33:32.320 thick right there's like a strange evian goes down so easy to me that's very interesting i
00:33:38.360 hate to say it okay because i want to be someone with a refined taste but like every time i am
00:33:45.360 given a bottled water can i take a sip and something seems really wrong and i'm like
00:33:49.900 ew what's wrong with this water it tastes like like like kind of like vaguely like like sewer
00:33:54.500 or something and then i'm like and it's avion and i'm like wait how can this be i thought this
00:34:00.040 now sometimes high-end stuff has you know some hideous taste you're expected to acquire like you
00:34:06.620 know what my favorite thing about this is my friend told me about in france at some really
00:34:10.160 fancy restaurant where like the most expensive wine was described as tasting like baby's diaper
00:34:18.340 oh yeah i mean that's the isn't that sensational for you yeah desperate to feel anything but but
00:34:29.160 anyway yeah that's my feeling about avion where does it even come from like where is this water
00:34:33.800 coming from let's look oh is it from france of course my dumb it's avion just to be clear wait
00:34:41.560 how do you know it's not Evian you're right it's Avian holy it's Avian I am so proud of myself 0.64
00:34:49.940 I'm humiliated at my like JFK pronunciation Evian it's Avian I think I thought that because
00:34:59.540 it's from the south shore of Lake Geneva how can that be I mean I guess that's why it tastes
00:35:04.880 I guess that's why it has a flavor how is this real I'm sorry I'm sorry but I just I'm getting
00:35:10.580 overwhelmed because okay give the snow-capped peaks of the alps melt each summer and move
00:35:15.520 through the mineral rich glacial sands of the something something can't pronounce it these
00:35:19.840 layers act as a sand filled sifter and eventually the water moves through and down the alps and ends
00:35:25.900 up in the springs of the little town of avion no and that's what i'm gonna say i want avion
00:35:31.840 bottled at the source in glass i don't care how rich in minerals and how pure your water is okay
00:35:39.000 Once it's in plastic and it's mailed to Tampa, Florida, it's being roasted in the belly of
00:35:45.260 a Boeing plane and the plastic is leaching into the water and then it's put onto a truck
00:35:52.240 and then it's roasted at 350 degrees.
00:35:56.100 It's seared and smoked.
00:35:57.800 Yeah, it's infused with plastic.
00:35:59.720 It's useless at that point.
00:36:01.280 I know.
00:36:01.720 Okay, no wonder I knew it was Avian. 1.00
00:36:04.700 There's an accent, aigu.
00:36:06.200 you know the little upward thing over the e i mean i mean not on the brand thing itself
00:36:11.540 apparently but in the source of avion les bains okay interesting okay so smart water smart water
00:36:20.220 is made from the british spring water which is vapor distilled before electrolytes are added
00:36:24.900 it has a distinctive crisp clean taste hysterical what am i tasting then because i'm telling you
00:36:32.260 multiple times i've gone oh this is the worst bottle of water i've ever had what is this
00:36:36.060 i can't believe it i thought they were all the same and then i look and it's avion
00:36:39.060 oh well there's a very distinctive flavor to avion i have done blind water taste tests in my life
00:36:46.520 just formally formally i'm a super i'm a super taster i have to say wow casually i might be a
00:36:53.340 super smeller i pick stuff up all right go on they're very similar i have a very strong sense
00:36:57.240 smell as well uh there's a very so i can tell the difference between avion smart water
00:37:06.100 probably tap water and it's another water that a mountain valley i think i would be able to pick
00:37:14.100 out in the lineup i really do yeah smart water i feel like to me smart water feels like you were
00:37:19.380 saying thick it feels like unflavored jello to me i mean yes head heading in that direction
00:37:24.760 and then the bottle reflects that the shape of the bottle feels like what it tastes like which
00:37:29.240 i always appreciate whoa okay i have deep reading news because i was gonna say you know the latest
00:37:36.180 water on the scene which i would say is actually kind of my favorite if i'm in a bodega in new york
00:37:40.320 this is the water i'm grabbing is essentia oh yes essentia is big for me yeah tell me about
00:37:46.160 essentia are you reading anything water is supercharged ionized alkaline water what's does
00:37:52.460 it say what the ph is yeah so glad you asked ph of 9.5 or higher okay because avian is highly
00:37:58.420 alkaline 7.8 oh wow but that's that's not inherently i mean alkaline isn't the only
00:38:07.980 alkaline is not the only thing that matters some people are anti-alkaline yeah yeah it's a whole
00:38:13.100 anti-alkaline community because it's one of those things like do you remember in mad men when he's
00:38:17.740 trying to sell the cigarettes and it's like all the research is coming out that cigarettes kill
00:38:21.140 you and so he's like we have like our ad shouldn't be like cigarettes don't kill you it should just
00:38:25.900 be like you know marvoro be bad it's toasted no just some other factor about it just any fact
00:38:32.020 like it's genius just some factor like anything and so it's like you could put like you know like
00:38:36.800 what is the thing um bpa free like bpa free right now that has some meaning because some people
00:38:42.580 avoid bpa but like imagine like like if the other brands the ones that have bpa in it were like
00:38:47.960 with bpa okay could this be real i'm seeing here that essentia wait where to go i typed in
00:38:56.080 essential water source as we all know okay and then it says essentia uses tap water from a source
00:39:02.240 in southern california no that's from 2007 surprising that's from 2014 but maybe what
00:39:09.480 essentia does and this is me praying for essentia founder of essentia can obtain what
00:39:16.640 Essentia uses tap water from a source in South Carolina,
00:39:18.900 which it pays for through a third-party bottler
00:39:20.900 for its enhanced bottled water.
00:39:23.180 But what's enhanced about it?
00:39:25.080 Does Essentia do something to the tap water?
00:39:28.400 Yes, I think they're doing some kind of reverse osmosis.
00:39:32.800 What are they doing?
00:39:35.500 Essentia is the leading ionized alkaline water brand.
00:39:40.000 Very interesting.
00:39:41.240 Leading, really?
00:39:41.980 Do you know about the raw water scene?
00:39:44.240 No, tell me about it.
00:39:45.320 Oh, my God. 0.99
00:39:46.040 So I used to follow these fools on Instagram who are obsessed with raw water and it's raw 0.99
00:39:53.300 water. 0.97
00:39:54.680 According to the internet, raw water is water found in the environment that has not been
00:39:58.280 treated and does not have any of its minerals, ions, particles, bacteria, or parasites removed.
00:40:03.300 Raw water includes rainwater, groundwater, water from infiltration wells, water from
00:40:08.460 bodies of lakes and rivers.
00:40:09.560 so i would follow these like they're exclusively like white yoga bodied my god you know often i'm
00:40:18.340 seeing a man with dreadlocks like complete nightmare and they're chasing they're going to
00:40:25.980 waterfalls and going to lakes and they're bottling this raw water and doing nothing to it now what
00:40:31.180 is what is untreated what is the benefit of parasites like immune exactly yeah it's super
00:40:37.400 weird and seems quite fishy but they're saying that the proponents or the beneficial minerals
00:40:44.340 right that are removed from treated and filtered water you know are alive in this water it's so
00:40:50.940 it's such a luxury but obviously it's like there could be so much dangerous bacteria in there
00:40:55.980 giardia like when i when i was camping trips we had the iodine tablets like we take the stream
00:41:01.420 water drop those babies in so it was safe i don't know well why doesn't that capture my attention
00:41:07.340 why aren't i like searching for water it's so apparently gross but even but but if if it was
00:41:15.560 like really appealing in some way there's something i don't know it's like there's so many problems
00:41:20.800 with how we you know with like modern life yeah you know where it's just like okay okay that might
00:41:26.980 be true that the nutrients have been sucked out of our bottled water you know like for whatever
00:41:31.880 reason but i'm like is it essential that we put put that back in place like or are we fine you
00:41:38.720 know and we're getting the nutrients elsewhere it's like when it's talking about hydration
00:41:42.300 that's different from minerals like i'd be right absolutely absolutely me saying absolutely absolutely
00:41:48.280 having no idea and then i just want to say that i also really enjoy from my childhood arrowhead
00:41:54.480 water um so that's an LA classic to me I think because they used to sell it at Trader Joe's
00:42:00.140 like when I was a kid but I really there's a water that I never hear about and that I very
00:42:05.400 rarely see called Jana J-A-N-A and that was my preferred bodega water for years
00:42:10.620 wow but there's something about a giant pole in spring yes it's like feels like it should be free
00:42:16.280 because water should be free right yeah but like it's so something about a giant pole in spring
00:42:23.280 it's like it feels like it's dehydrating that's so funny well dasani obviously is pure poison
00:42:31.320 give me death before you give me dasani and they add water to it and it's like so it's poison
00:42:37.140 what it's poison it start with poison and then they add water no but i must i must know nor
00:42:44.620 i must know more keep telling me about um dasani because like i mean dasani is a joke
00:42:50.220 let's let's look at by the way i just want to see what the dasani website looks like because 0.94
00:42:54.240 those bastards are is dasani owned by pepsi coke okay so dasani would be in the coke machine 0.92
00:43:00.840 um and the word sounds like a false attempt to you know make the water sound like it's something 0.99
00:43:10.180 they want to soothe us into sleep um well you know in the in the soda uh things inside of like
00:43:19.340 a fast food restaurant whatever those are called where you push the where you push your cup against
00:43:23.060 the thing and it shoots out yeah it's like mixing it on the spot it's like adding water i think to
00:43:29.060 like like push in the water thing and it comes out tasting a little bit like soda
00:43:33.420 okay it's being mixed in the machine i believe yes i don't know there's something weird that
00:43:40.760 that's being created on site like like you know like it's like proprietary it's like not i don't
00:43:47.100 Yeah, it wasn't bottled at the place.
00:43:49.000 It's like, obviously, the idea of something being bottled at a place has its own horror.
00:43:52.460 It's like, you know, what did someone do to it?
00:43:54.940 Not that, you know, it's always a concern.
00:43:56.640 By the way, isn't this disturbing on Dasani?
00:43:58.140 What's the shelf life of Dasani?
00:43:59.720 No.
00:44:00.120 Dasani will hold its fresh taste for up to 12 months.
00:44:02.440 After that, it's best to recycle the old one and start with a fresh new bottle.
00:44:06.880 That's disturbing and laughable.
00:44:08.560 By the way, do not try to romanticize the new bottle by saying fresh new bottle.
00:44:13.800 And by the way, they add sodium.
00:44:15.300 hold okay is that real yes yes that's real and listen to this dasani is classified by the fda
00:44:24.240 as a very low sodium food because of the amount because they add water to it they could say
00:44:30.120 literally on their they could greenwash okay and say low sodium exactly they could put low sodium
00:44:37.460 splashed across their thing low sodium so why do they put sodium in because the water is like
00:44:44.800 probably pure poison so you add a little salt salt in there and it can go down easy well the
00:44:49.440 whole revelation about like i don't know the origin of coca-cola and how they made it it was
00:44:54.820 like um not only did they put the you know sugar which isn't addictive in itself right but they
00:45:02.560 basically they load it up with salt was okay they they pour they make the saltiest water in the
00:45:08.760 world okay the kind that if you drink it you'd be so thirsty you'd need another soda right then
00:45:14.020 they add enough sugar to offset the salt so so so that's why people are addicted to coca-cola
00:45:23.800 according to this that's wild i mean that sounds exactly right somebody recently told me that you
00:45:30.960 can fully clean your toilet with coca-cola oh actually i had diet coke okay which i used to
00:45:37.560 drink i used to drink i loved it i mean literally sometimes if i want to self-mutilate i'll have a
00:45:41.940 Diet Coke. Like sometimes if I want, sometimes if I'm getting a cheeseburger, French fries,
00:45:46.360 like the Coke just has to be part of the trio. I know. I know. And the question is just because
00:45:52.280 people, oh, I'm so tired of the whole like, oh, you get a cheeseburger, uh, fries, a milkshake
00:45:59.020 and a Diet Coke. Okay. Good job. Health nut. I'm like, excuse me. I prefer the taste. And also,
00:46:04.840 how dare you everyone is allowed to make one tiny effort like that like sorry that is still less
00:46:13.100 sugar than the other order would have been people are monsters in talking you know and responding
00:46:18.300 so i'm just like curious how much sodium is in coca-cola all right also like and by the way it's
00:46:24.080 saying to clean your toilet with a coke you need to let it sit for an hour so it's like absolutely
00:46:27.740 not all right so what's the deal with mountain valley why is mountain valley good i mean the
00:46:32.820 primary reason why i love mountain valley and again i don't actually buy mountain valley in a
00:46:37.080 real way because it's so expensive but it's in glass oh right okay i'm just completely bypassing
00:46:42.060 the plastics what about paper like the boxed water no you think that's bad taste honey
00:46:48.900 yeah have you had boxed water no you would i mean maybe you would throw it against a wall and watch
00:46:56.900 it explode it's it's undrinkable really emergencies only no it's bad there was a there's one that
00:47:03.880 comes in a white carton that looks like milk that one is i think extra bad oh really and there's
00:47:10.360 another one that comes in a blue thing and that one's repulsive as well it's just i mean i still
00:47:14.200 support it over plastic but yeah so okay mountain valley is about the glass bottle which you feel
00:47:19.980 safe even if it's boiling in a the back of a truck in tampa or whatever yeah um avion dasani
00:47:27.040 right dasani you perceive as trash and full of sodium aquafina is aquafina pepsi is it
00:47:34.720 humiliation i'm forgetting what they are but it's something bad yeah i mean i know that you're not
00:47:41.600 gonna be into those but i'm curious if you like if you have a specific take on those aquafina is
00:47:46.580 just very of the 90s i feel like oh yeah it's somehow tied to like femininity dasani and
00:47:52.060 aquafina i feel like like emerged at the same time as the coke companies the coke and pepsi
00:47:57.440 companies offering to the water community they're like we can do that we already have trash water
00:48:03.440 that we sell with other stuff in it yeah i'm as you know the other thing that i'm interested in
00:48:10.100 is charging up my water with crystals okay oh i've done that i used to have the yeah keep going
00:48:15.800 well there's one that i wanted to order a water bottle that you know has the gorgeous crystal in
00:48:19.880 the center they i think they sell it on goop's website 90 it shatters the second you use it
00:48:24.480 that's what i read literally shatters oh yeah i mean it's like that for someone that's a
00:48:30.580 high quality gift it's a beautiful gift can you believe that example of what you know like that's
00:48:36.540 the kind of thing people go well it's the kind of thing you're not going to get yourself and i'd be
00:48:39.260 like well actually i would i'd spend my rent money on it yeah convinced it was more important
00:48:43.840 $90, you know, bottle. I'm never going to drink bottled water again. I'm only going to drink
00:48:48.920 out of imbued personal vessels. Now, here's the question. I say that. Okay. I say that,
00:48:54.280 but of course there will come a time, right? There will come an emergency. There will come
00:48:57.400 something. Here's a fun question. Assuming we commit to no longer drinking bottled water. Okay.
00:49:02.460 Trash, plastic bottled water. Yeah. What will be the first time we break? Because it will happen
00:49:07.860 somewhere l-a-x right you have me in an airport i'm buying the five dollar fiji i'm buying the
00:49:14.080 17 smart water that i drink in five seconds i'm trapped because also that vessel that water
00:49:21.460 vessel i'm too scared to take that on the plane i'm gonna lose it i'm gonna lose it when i travel
00:49:25.940 okay actually i've never even lost i've never lost keys wallet nothing ever but i'm still
00:49:30.880 but i'm still too scared let's all take the poog challenge
00:49:34.900 yeah the poog challenge take no bottled water no bottle water and who of you will crack and how
00:49:45.360 tag at cape berlin and at jack no that is the pronunciation hashtag i cracked poog is available

00:49:55.900 Okay, okay.
00:49:57.440 That's about it.
00:49:58.500 And I swear,
00:50:00.080 I'm not just saying this
00:50:00.840 because it's the water episode.
