00:02:28.000In Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Dante Wright, a 20-year-old black man, was shot and killed by police during a traffic stop.
00:02:34.240And, I don't know, this just really got to me.
00:02:38.040Wright was initially stopped by police for having expired tags,
00:02:41.340and the stop got confrontational after police spotted an air freshener dangling from his rearview mirror,
00:02:46.680which is a traffic violation in the state.
00:02:49.400Now, you might be thinking, why in the hell do you need police to have this kind of confrontation
00:02:54.400for something as simple and small as an air freshener?0.91
00:02:57.880I know it sounds ridiculous, but this same thing has happened to me multiple times.0.98
00:03:03.960And if you're Black, I probably don't need to tell you that these kinds of low-level traffic stops can turn violent or deadly pretty quickly.0.97
00:03:12.460According to Harvard's School of Public Health, Black people are more than three times likely as white people to be killed during a police encounter.0.97
00:03:19.380And studies have also found that Black drivers are far more likely to be stopped by police than white drivers.0.97
00:03:25.260So, yeah, just driving around your own community as a Black person can be a death sentence.0.90
00:03:31.760When Dante, who, you know, at 20 years old, is still so young, was being pulled over,
00:04:00.780The Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, police chief said that Kim Porter, the police officer who killed Dante, meant to use her taser, but grabbed her gun instead.
00:04:10.120But if you've ever held a taser and a gun, I've held both, you know they feel really different.
00:04:15.700So how does a police union president and a 26-year veteran of the police force like Kim Porter make this kind of, quote, mistake?
00:04:26.860Here's what he had to say on Good Morning America today.
00:04:28.780I cannot accept that. I lost my son. He's never coming back. I can't accept that. A mistake, that's not, that doesn't even sound right. You know, this officer that's been on the force for 26 plus, 26 years. I can't accept that.
00:04:48.460Now that officer, Kim Porter, she resigned this afternoon,
00:04:51.320but to be clear, this is actually a pretty common thing
00:04:54.180that officers do when they expect to be fired
00:04:56.180because it can be kind of a defensive move
00:04:58.460to prevent facing further discipline like losing your pension.
00:05:01.580And right now, there is absolutely nothing
00:05:04.120stopping her from joining a police force someplace else.
00:05:07.080And all of this is pretty hard to watch,
00:05:10.280especially when you consider that it's happening in Minnesota,
00:05:12.860just a few short miles away from Minneapolis,
00:05:15.380where the city is currently gripped by a trial
00:05:17.460for Officer Derek Chauvin, for killing George Floyd, another unarmed Black man whose death
00:05:23.020sparked a massive global racial justice movement this past summer. Y'all, it's just a lot. This
00:05:29.760moment, the Black death, all of it. And here's where it gets even worse for me because we can't1.00
00:05:36.560even have this moment without bad actors on social media coming in to exploit our pain.
00:05:43.660This afternoon, when I logged into Twitter,
00:05:46.080I found a handful of big, influential, verified far-right accounts
00:05:50.140comparing Daunte Wright, who was shot and killed for just driving his own car,
00:05:54.360and Ashley Babbitt, the white woman who you might remember was shot and killed by police
00:05:58.280while she was pushing her way into the Capitol during the insurrection on January 6th.
