00:00:55.280Pro Society is a weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse.
00:01:03.960Each week, we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and pop culture with your favorite writers, book talk creators, and plenty of overthought opinions.
00:03:01.320And furthermore, making Black communities the face of vaccine hesitancy
00:03:05.060is not actually borne out by the data.
00:03:07.920Black folks are actually enthusiastic about the COVID-19 vaccine.
00:03:12.200We're the fastest-growing demographic to say that we would like to get vaccinated.
00:03:15.840The Kaiser Family Foundation found that Black adults saw the largest increase in vaccine enthusiasm,
00:03:20.860with the portion of those who have gotten or say they will get the vaccine jumping to 55% from just 20% in December.
00:03:28.680And what about white vaccine hesitancy?
00:03:31.240According to Pew, white evangelicals are the least likely demographic to say they'll get vaccinated.
00:03:37.680Of the around 41 million white evangelical adults in the United States,
00:03:41.480Around 45% of them say they will not get vaccinated against COVID-19.0.90
00:03:46.140And yet, we still make Black folks the face of vaccine hesitancy.
00:03:50.240Despite COVID disproportionately impacting the Black community and our enthusiasm for getting vaccinated, Black folks are still getting vaccinated less.
00:03:58.840Black folks and Latinos are only about 60% as likely to have had the COVID-19 vaccine as their white counterparts, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
00:04:08.400That's because right now, the real issue isn't hesitancy, it's equal access.
00:04:13.780An NPR study that you can find a link to in the show description
00:04:16.720found deep disparities in Black communities when it comes to accessing the COVID-19 vaccine.
00:04:22.760They found that in some states with lots of Black folks,
00:04:25.020states like Louisiana, Texas, and Alabama,
00:04:27.540Black and brown neighborhoods had fewer vaccine distribution sites,
00:04:30.720while few wider neighborhoods were without one.
00:04:34.120Not to mention the fact that many vaccine registration portals
00:04:36.900require internet access, and Pew found that Black households are 30% less likely to own a computer.0.74
00:04:43.120We've also seen white, wealthier folks jumping the vaccine line and misusing programs meant to
00:04:48.440vaccinate Black, brown, and low-income communities. I know here in D.C. where I live, people looking
00:04:53.900for vaccines had to get up early and keep refreshing the city's website in the hopes of getting an open
00:04:58.380slot. And what if you had to work? Or deal with childcare? Not everybody has the ability to spend
00:05:04.700a few hours refreshing a website in the hopes of getting an open vaccine slot.
00:05:08.640The bottom line is, blaming Black hesitancy without any context for the Black community's
00:05:13.700low vaccination rates is actually really harmful because it minimizes the importance of equal
00:05:18.520access to health care and instead shifts the onus away from our medical institutions and
00:05:23.480puts it on the choices of individual Black people instead.0.96
00:05:26.820I'm happy to say that I got my first dose of the Moderna vaccine.
00:05:31.160I was even happier to learn that it was developed by a team led by 34-year-old Dr. Kizmika Corbett,
00:05:36.240a Black woman scientist who leads a team at the National Institute of Health.
00:05:41.020Here's what she told CNN's Abby Phillip.
00:05:43.680There is a subset of people who just hasn't been listened to around their health issues
00:05:48.180and around, you know, technology, really.
00:05:52.120And at this point, I just felt like it was time for me to sit down
00:05:56.100and empathize with an entire group of people who had been ignored.
00:05:59.100And I know it may not make for the most hilarious SNL skit, but when we talk about Black folks and vaccines, I hope we can also make room to amplify the fact that this amazing Black woman is a big part of the reason why we have one of their vaccines in the first place.
