00:01:21.220 so i hope everybody is having a fantastic holiday season and i'm actually popping in from my holiday
00:01:29.200 break to let y'all know that christmas came a little bit late this year in the form of the
00:01:33.640 news that misogynistic grifter andrew tate and his brother were detained in connection with
00:01:38.660 human trafficking in romania and it could not have happened in a more delicious way so let's
00:01:44.460 get into it this week andrew tate tweeted a photo just dripping with insecurity where he
00:01:50.560 was showing off his cars. And for some reason, probably crippling self-esteem issues and
00:01:56.380 a need for negative attention and validation, he tagged 19-year-old climate activist Greta 0.59
00:02:01.820 Thunberg saying, please provide your email address so I can send a complete list of my 1.00
00:02:07.180 car collection and their respective enormous emissions. Greta replied, yes, please do
00:02:12.020 enlighten me. You can reach me at smalldickenergy at getalife.com. And everyone on the internet
00:02:18.240 just loved it. And Tate was like, I don't care. I'm not bothered. And to show just how not bothered
00:02:25.040 he was, he made a whole video response of him sitting at a table smoking his trademark cigar
00:02:30.300 next to an empty box of pizza. Now, it's important to know that Tate has been under
00:02:35.540 investigation in connection to a human trafficking ring for some time. On the very gross men's rights 1.00
00:02:41.320 podcast Fresh and Fit, Tate explained how he made lots of money by soliciting women to make adult
00:02:46.900 content, saying, I found this little webcam thing and thought this might be some money. We started
00:02:52.680 the webcam business from my apartment and it just grew and grew. At one point, I had 75 women working 1.00
00:02:57.400 for me in four locations and I was doing $600,000 a month. Now, it's not totally clear if this is the
00:03:03.420 same business that led to his detainment, but Romanian prosecutors said that four people,
00:03:09.620 quote, appear to have created an organized crime group with the purpose of recruiting, housing,
00:03:14.460 and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content.
00:03:17.940 So basically the allegations are that he was trafficking women
00:03:21.260 and forcing them to do online sex work and just pocketing the money.
00:03:25.060 CNN reports the authorities allege that two of the suspects misled the victims,
00:03:30.460 quote, into believing that they intended to enter into a marriage cohabitation relationship
00:03:35.360 while transporting victims to Romania and later sexually exploiting them
00:03:39.340 with physical violence and coercion,
00:03:42.080 which are very, very serious allegations.
00:03:46.040 Now compare that to what Andrew Tate wrote on his own website,
00:03:49.800 an archived version of which was uncovered by PhD student Krista Peterso,
00:03:54.400 hawking his scammy pickup artist coaching business,
00:03:57.260 where he says,
00:03:57.860 Why am I an expert on all-male-female interactions?
00:04:01.580 I've been running a webcam studio for nearly a decade. 1.00
00:04:04.320 I've had over 75 girls work for me,
00:04:06.320 and my business model is different than 99% of webcam studio owners. 0.98
00:04:10.700 Over 50% of my employees were actually my girlfriend at the time.
00:04:14.540 And of all my girlfriends, none were in the adult entertainment industry before they met me.
00:04:18.960 Literally, that was my job. 0.99
00:04:20.700 My job was to meet a girl, go on a few dates, sleep with her, test if she's quality, 1.00
00:04:24.960 and get her to fall in love with me where she would do anything I say. 1.00
00:04:27.940 Then get her on a webcam so that we could become rich together.
00:04:30.420 so yeah it does kind of sound like what the romanian officials have alleged he was involved
00:04:37.000 with to me and tate has been pretty open about the fact that the reason that he lives in romania
00:04:42.040 in the first place is because that he figured the romanians would be less likely to charge him for
00:04:46.300 sex crimes now a good rule of thumb for anybody is that if you're on the lam especially from a
00:04:52.520 government it's probably a good idea to keep a low digital profile like i probably would not be
00:04:58.700 podcasting if I were wanted by the state. But Andrew Tate does things differently. And soon
00:05:05.660 after he sent his video response to Greta Thunberg, his villa was raided and he was detained by
00:05:11.260 authorities in Romania. Police served search warrants at five homes and detained four suspects
00:05:16.320 as part of the investigation into organized human trafficking and rape. Now, many speculated that it
00:05:22.480 was that pizza box visible in his video response to Greta Thunberg that tipped off authorities to 0.94
00:05:27.720 his whereabouts, which, holy crap, the deliciousness. I know, I know. But I'm sorry to say that
00:05:34.480 according to CNN, Romanian authorities just said that it was social media activity that
00:05:39.180 led to his detainment, not really the pizza box specifically. But you know what? I don't
00:05:44.340 care. It's Christmas and I'm going to have this one. You might remember that Tate was
00:05:48.460 banned from pretty much every social media platform this past summer. But when Elon Musk
00:05:53.220 took over at Twitter, he quickly let Andrew Tate back on. Listen, I know that Andrew Tate,
00:05:59.660 a grown-ass man, and his insatiable need to use social media to dunk on a teenager
00:06:05.000 leading to his downfall is pretty funny. But we are definitely talking about very serious,
00:06:10.880 dangerous allegations. You know, Andrew Tate was allegedly taking part in very serious crimes
00:06:16.880 against women while also being given a huge platform on social media and podcasts to show
00:06:22.300 off all the cars and money that he made from allegedly harming women while being able to
00:06:26.940 influence men and boys to want to be just like him. Who is Andrew Tate was the most searched
00:06:32.480 sentence starting with who is on Google this year. And right now, there are scores of young
00:06:37.960 men and boys defending him. It's scary. And to get into why that is, let's revisit the
00:06:43.820 conversation that we had about Andrew Tate when he was first deplatformed back in August.
00:06:52.300 social media platforms like tiktok and facebook have finally banned violent misogynistic scam
00:07:03.680 influencer andrew tate and honestly it should have happened sooner now if you don't know who
00:07:09.040 andrew tate is don't worry he went from being relatively obscure to seemingly being everywhere
00:07:14.540 on social media within a few months videos featuring his name as a hashtag have been viewed
00:07:19.180 over 13 billion times. And before it was shut down, his TikTok account had over 11 billion
00:07:25.100 views. He had 4 million Twitter followers, 4.7 million Instagram followers, almost 800,000
00:07:31.280 YouTube subscribers, and millions and millions of clicks and shares across Facebook. So who
00:07:36.900 is Andrew Tate? Well, Andrew Tate is kind of like Joe Rogan on steroids. Just like Rogan,
00:07:43.720 at one time, Andrew Tate was a professional martial artist. And also like Rogan, Andrew
00:07:48.760 Tate did a stint in reality television. Tate was on Big Brother in 2016, where he was known for
00:07:54.960 being really respectful and thoughtful of others. Oh wait, sorry, just kidding. It says here he was
00:08:00.680 actually known for homophobia and violence against women. After a video surfaced where he was beating
00:08:06.420 a woman with a belt while screaming at her, quote, if you ever message another guy, whether we're 1.00
00:08:11.940 together or not, you're fucking dead. Tate was kicked off Big Brother after only being on the 1.00
00:08:17.480 show for six days. Andrew Tate's podcast is called Tate Speech, and it's basically exactly what you
00:08:25.560 think it is. He's part of what we call the Manosphere, a loosely connected ecosystem of
00:08:30.920 online websites and influencers that traffic in misogyny and racism on places like 4chan and
00:08:37.060 Reddit. If you listened to our episode with Laura Bates, a researcher and writer who went undercover
00:08:42.440 in the Manosphere to research her book, Men Who Hate Women, then you know exactly what I'm talking
00:08:47.240 about. So Andrew Tate's whole thing is these clips of him speaking on his podcast, wearing
00:08:53.240 sunglasses indoors, you know, like you do, and smoking a cigar while he basically says the most
00:08:58.300 violent sexist nonsense that makes him sound like an alpha male. Like, here is his take on why he is 0.59
00:09:05.280 anti-breakfast. This is an actual quote from him. I don't have food in the mornings. I don't like
00:09:11.380 the idea of breakfast. Waking up from sleep instantly with available food that you didn't
00:09:16.020 have to hunt and kill. Breakfast breeds arrogance and laziness. I will not eat until work has been
00:09:21.720 done. Instead, I start my day with hunger and memories. My path to the top wasn't a straight
00:09:27.220 line. There's been bumps in the road, tears, blood. I sit and remember the worst times of my life,
00:09:33.940 the pain and the heartache. Some mornings, if I try, I can almost cry. I take all that anguish
00:09:39.480 and pain and then add a little nicotine and caffeine to set my blood on fire, and I enter
00:09:43.780 the world, ready to win life or die while I'm trying. Angry men siege nations. I don't have
00:09:49.400 time for Cheerios. The universe will pay me what she owes me. All the money and power I deserve.
00:09:55.480 So yeah, sounds pretty healthy. Definitely sounds like someone who is
00:10:00.880 got a healthy start to the day and encouraging others to do the same.

00:11:14.700 and anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse.
00:11:19.400 I'm Eli Rallo, and every week we're connecting the dots between books,
00:11:23.100 the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
00:11:26.360 I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed, so obsessed.
00:11:30.080 From best-selling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments,
00:11:34.960 nothing is off the table.
00:11:36.040 It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse.
00:11:43.940 Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place.
00:11:53.120 Listen to Pro Society on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:11:59.160 See you between the pages.
00:12:06.040 Andrew Tate's brand of hyperviolence, toxic hypermasculinity, and misogyny basically says
00:12:14.520 that women are property of men. This is something that he's actually said. And he advocates for men
00:12:19.500 using violence in relationships. He outright said that if a woman ever asked him about cheating,
00:12:24.420 he would physically attack her. In a really good piece for Grid, reporter Christian Thorsberg
00:12:29.600 spoke to Josh Rose, a political sociologist and senior research fellow at Deakin University in
00:12:34.820 Melbourne, who says that Tate represents a dramatic shift taking place in online misogyny,
00:12:40.040 moving beyond the sexualization and dismissal of women, which much of Tate's material promotes,
00:12:44.660 to also encouraging gendered hate and violence. So basically, it's not just men are better than
00:12:50.960 women, it's men are better than women, and therefore men should be able to use violence
00:12:56.000 in service of establishing and maintaining that hierarchy. And this is even more troubling when 0.97
00:13:01.660 you consider that the majority of Tate's audience are young men and boys. Teachers have been writing
00:13:08.320 about how Andrew Tate's popularity with boys has been creating problems and disturbances in their
00:13:13.520 classrooms. So Tate is popular with boys, but he's also really popular with young men who are just
00:13:19.100 starting to navigate their way into young adulthood. Going back to Roos from that grid piece,
00:13:25.200 Roos also said, if you want to know where Andrew Tate is gaining traction, it's more likely to be
00:13:30.100 the white-collar sector among educated younger men who work out at gyms on the weekend or after
00:13:35.420 work. Younger men are more likely to hold anti-women attitudes in terms of women's rights,
00:13:40.700 that women's rights has gone too far. So on top of all this, Andrew Tate is also a scammer. Let's
00:13:47.400 get that straight right away. He used to operate a porn webcam business with his brother that his
00:13:53.020 brother outright described as, quote, a big scam. But that scam is actually the least scammy scam
00:13:59.940 that Andrew Tate is involved in. Because his whole thing, his whole ethos, his whole identity
00:14:05.580 is a scam. So I've actually written about the ways that misogynistic podcasters and content
00:14:11.460 creators and influencers who make up the manosphere are all basically just scamming.
00:14:16.460 They prey on men and boys with low media literacy who may feel lonely. They get into their heads
00:14:22.580 and convince them to send over money.
00:14:25.620 Podcasts like Fit and Fresh,
00:14:27.560 the late Kevin Samuels,
00:14:29.120 they all basically convince young men and boys
00:14:31.260 to send them lots and lots of money
00:14:33.340 or give them lots and lots of engagement
00:14:35.680 in service of learning how to become high value men.
00:14:39.440 I actually wrote a piece on this for The Nation,
00:14:42.960 talking about the Fresh and Fit podcast,
00:14:44.680 which you can read in the show notes.
00:14:49.620 Let's take a quick break.

00:16:00.100 I'm Eli Rallo, and every week we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
00:16:07.200 I'm going to have to look up this story.
00:16:09.100 I'm obsessed.
00:16:09.840 So obsessed.
00:16:10.340 From best-selling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table.
00:16:16.740 It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse.
00:16:24.660 Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right place.
00:16:33.820 Listen to Pro Society on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
00:16:39.820 See you between the pages.
00:16:46.300 And we're back.
00:16:47.980 So let's talk about Andrew Tate's scam specifically.
00:16:51.780 It is called Hustlers University, where for the low, low cost of $50 a month,
00:16:58.580 men and boys can learn about cryptocurrency from three guys named Michael, Adam, and Daniel,
00:17:03.780 no last name given, and learn about just the general concept of, quote,
00:17:08.780 freelancing from Dylan and Colston, no last name given. Also, given that Andrew Tate's audience
00:17:15.460 mostly includes young men and boys, don't worry. According to Hustlers University's frequently
00:17:21.460 asked questions, it is not a problem if you are not a legal adult because they have plenty of
00:17:27.060 young guys inside of Hustlers University who are below 18 and are pulling in several thousand
00:17:31.620 dollars a month. Do you have access to the internet? That's all you need. By the way,
00:17:36.640 this is a little bit nitpicky, but I just have to say it. On the Hustlers University website
00:17:40.720 Frequently Asked Questions, it says that you do not need any money to start because most of the
00:17:45.740 Hustlers University students are doing freelance work and that freelance work does not require any
00:17:51.620 money to do. Take it from an actual honest-to-God freelancer, this is just incorrect financial
00:17:57.940 advice. You absolutely need money to freelance. And when their tax bill comes, I hope the people
00:18:03.800 who were told that they need $0 to freelance
00:18:06.420 are not surprised when the government
00:18:08.420 expects them to pay self-employment taxes.
00:18:11.920 So again, you can see how he's kind of preying
00:18:14.340 on people who might not have a lot of financial literacy
00:18:17.240 or media literacy, and it's awful.
00:18:19.740 And it gets worse because guess what?
00:18:21.980 The entire thing is basically a pyramid scheme.
00:18:25.740 Like most pyramid schemes,
00:18:27.760 the courses aren't really the thing.
00:18:30.300 The thing is getting others to sign up for the courses.
00:18:33.720 Students of the program got a commission for convincing other dupes to join via affiliate marketing.
00:18:40.120 So just like LuLaRoe and every other MLM scam that somebody from your high school messaged you about on Facebook,
00:18:46.500 who was all like, hey, hon, have you ever thought about starting your own business?
00:18:50.760 I think you would really slay at it.
00:18:52.760 It's a scam.
00:18:54.400 And honestly, probably a lucrative one.
00:18:56.800 According to the Daily Beast, the program had some 109,000 members before its closure.
00:19:03.000 And this is actually why you might know who Tate is, because Tate specifically told his students to flood social media with videos of his content to promote his scam university.
00:19:14.140 According to Hope Not Hate, a UK-based advocacy group that uses research to challenge mistrust and racism, Tate tells his supporters they can earn significant sums by sharing his videos.
00:19:25.280 In one podcast, he claimed that a 16-year-old Hustler University student was making 45,000 pounds a month from publishing his clips on the TikTok, which is basically how he gamified the program.
00:19:37.120 Even though he's banned from TikTok, his content is still really prevalent there because his students just flood the space with his content.
00:19:45.020 And I think he definitely is someone who needs social media.
00:19:48.680 He's just gaming the algorithms because he knows that algorithms specifically boost inflammatory content.
00:19:55.360 They will always give content that is inflammatory or divisive more engagement.
00:20:00.260 Andrew Tate was banned from Twitter back in 2017 over a thread commenting on Harvey Weinstein, where he said, quote,
00:20:06.760 If you put yourself in a position to be raped, you must bear some responsibility. 0.98
00:20:11.080 I'm not saying it's OK you got raped. 0.97
00:20:13.440 And TikTok took down Andrew Tate's account for breaking its policies regarding, quote, 0.92
00:20:18.100 content that attacks, threatens, incites violence against or otherwise dehumanizes an individual or group,
00:20:23.440 based on attributes including sex.
00:20:25.480 This is what a TikTok spokesperson told The Washington Post.
00:20:27.780 He was also kicked off Facebook and Instagram for violating the rules around dangerous organizations and individuals.
00:20:34.440 But, as always, let's not give the platforms too much credit.
00:20:39.100 Pretty much whenever they decide to remove somebody who is dangerous from their platform
00:20:42.940 or make any kind of policy change like this, it's typically because of the work of organizers
00:20:48.160 who have been pushing them behind the scenes.
00:20:49.880 And this time it's no different.
00:20:51.960 Hope Not Hate filed a petition for platforms to drop Andrew Tate and has been monitoring
00:20:56.020 him for years.
00:20:57.280 So great job to all the organizers who did the work behind the scenes to make this happen.
00:21:01.980 But also what we learned from how Alex Jones uses Facebook, you might remember that Mark
00:21:07.660 Zuckerberg personally intervened so that even after Alex Jones was banned from Facebook,
00:21:12.560 he carved out a loophole so that other people could still post his content on the platform.
00:21:17.240 Even though Tate has been banned from these platforms, it might not actually even really
00:21:22.120 matter if his whole thing is having other people, his students, post his content on his behalf.
00:21:28.500 And I also should just probably note that in April, the Daily Beast reported that Andrew
00:21:32.280 Tate's house in Romania was raided as part of an investigation into crimes of human trafficking
00:21:38.540 and rape. Tate lives in Romania, and in a now-deleted YouTube video, he said that 40%
00:21:43.840 of the reason why he moved there is because Romanian police were less likely to pursue
00:21:47.820 sexual assault allegations. So yeah, you tell me. And to me, Andrew Tate represents the mainstreaming
00:21:55.720 of really violent, dangerous ideas and rhetoric. And those things, you know, not just being fringe,
00:22:01.500 but flooding popular social media apps like TikTok.
00:22:05.880 Tate is also treated like a thought leader.
00:22:08.000 He's given a huge platform by popular podcasts like Barstool,
00:22:11.800 which gives him a huge audience of young men and boys
00:22:15.100 and hosts who really don't push back
00:22:17.420 on any of the dangerous things that he's saying.
00:22:19.880 And overall, like I've said time and time again, 0.95
00:22:22.660 these people are all scam artists.
00:22:24.980 They do not care about their audience. 0.58
00:22:26.500 They do not care about the men and boys
00:22:27.920 that they're talking to.
00:22:28.660 they do not care about the students of their so-called universities.
00:22:32.720 To them, these men and boys and their pain and loneliness and anger
00:22:36.540 is just a tool that can be exploited and weaponized to make more cash. 1.00
00:22:41.620 It is the most cynical, exploitative shit in the world. 1.00
00:22:44.800 And it works! 1.00
00:22:46.380 Listen, to be clear, I am not against people asking tough questions
00:22:50.280 and having the thorny, meaty conversations about relationships, sex, and gender.
00:22:54.720 In fact, I believe that we need more people spearheading those conversations in meaningful and thoughtful ways.
00:23:02.220 But Andrew Tate is not actually interested in men and boys having healthy relationships because people who are in healthy relationships do not send over $50 a month to a charlatan to teach them how to be high-value, successful men.
00:23:16.820 People like Tate need to keep their audience of men and boys angry.
00:23:20.500 They need to stoke their feelings of loneliness and inadequacy and anger and tell them to keep pointing those feelings at women so they keep shelling over more money.
00:23:30.340 So this is my call to everyone listening.
00:23:32.860 If you have a young man or boy in your life, talk to them about what kind of content they're consuming.
00:23:38.100 Talk to them about what they think about women and girls.
00:23:40.500 And you honestly might be surprised.
00:23:43.680 And it really, really matters.
00:23:45.980 The implications are huge.
00:23:47.820 Here's how Laura Bates, author of Men Who Hate Women, put it during our interview.
00:23:52.540 We've never really seen it because we're kind of hovering on the edge of the first
00:23:57.060 real generation coming of age who have lived their whole lives on social media.
00:24:02.660 We have this kind of unique political moment that never really gets picked up on this.
00:24:07.360 I find it wild that we're living at this moment in history.
00:24:09.560 It's never happened before and will never happen again.
00:24:12.100 And yet it's never really discussed.
00:24:13.700 where a generation of non-digital natives is parenting and educating a generation of digital
00:24:18.840 natives. And there is this chasm there, this huge gap in culture and understanding of what their
00:24:24.020 world is like, what the day-to-day landscape of their online world is like amongst parents who
00:24:29.000 grew up in a pre-internet age. And that generation will be coming of age. And what will that look
00:24:33.980 like when our political representatives are being drawn from a generation who have literally grown
00:24:39.660 up with the sheer daily bombardment of racism and misogyny and transphobia that comes with
00:24:45.660 living your life on the internet in the way that young people do today. And I don't think we'll
00:24:49.840 know what that looks like until we get there. And I think when we do, it will be a shock.
00:24:54.400 But for now, Andrew Tate, good riddance. And if this means I have to see one last video
00:25:00.400 of a guy wearing sunglasses inside and smoking a cigar on my For You page, I'll take it.
