00:00:00.000 hello and welcome to vulgar history of feminist women's history comedy podcast my name is ann
00:00:16.820 foster and today is the finale of the series about mary queen of scots there's something
00:00:22.060 about mary queen of scots we're going to be looking at the four marys who were her companions
00:00:27.340 who have been, we mentioned them on and off throughout the whole series, but I never really
00:00:32.420 got into depth about who they were, how you can tell them apart, what their connection is to the
00:00:36.140 four ladies-in-waiting on the TV show Reign. And we're going to get into that today, but first I
00:00:40.200 have some announcements to give you. First of all, there's some new merch in the merch store
00:00:45.640 inspired by the season. So both of these designs are done by Karen Moynihan, who has designed
00:00:51.000 merch for us before. She did the Reformation, Renaissance, Girl Squad, and the Mary Shelley,
00:00:55.100 goth queen mom friend designs. And she did an amazing job with these new merch ideas.
00:01:01.020 So the first one is in honor of the Degeese family, who we mentioned a lot throughout the
00:01:06.380 whole thing. They were just really fucking things up for Mary the whole time. Oh, also to new 0.92
00:01:09.820 listeners. Hi, I'm going to swear on this podcast. And I also say like a normal amount. And if you
00:01:14.860 can't deal with that, there's lots of other podcasts you can listen to. Anyway, so the first
00:01:18.540 design just says, don't stop Degeese-n. And it looks kind of like a rock band logo from the 80s.
00:01:24.380 and I love it. And the other one is inspired by a thing that friend of the podcast and frequent
00:01:29.220 co-host Lana Wood Johnson said in one of the final Mary Queen of Scots episodes, which is
00:01:35.600 Lana said that she's at least as good a leader as William Cecil. And that really resonated with
00:01:41.180 a lot of listeners. And so this other design, it's sort of like a motivational poster, like
00:01:45.520 from the eighties or nineties, it says, remember you are at least as good a leader as William
00:01:49.620 Cecil. You can get that on. You can get the Don't Stop Diggies Inn on t-shirts, on stickers. You can
00:01:56.060 get the William Cecil one on a poster, on a mug, various different things. And so the merch is for
00:02:00.920 sale in two different places. So if you go to vulgarhistory.com slash store, that takes you to
00:02:05.540 our TeePublic store where that's best for people in the US, just in terms of the shipping costs
00:02:12.260 and stuff. And then if you go to vulgarhistory.redbubble.com, that takes you to our Red
00:02:16.620 bubble store where the shipping is a bit better if you're living anywhere other than the United
00:02:20.480 States, basically. And also I just want to let you know, stay tuned to the end of today's episode
00:02:25.500 for an update about what is coming next for Vulgar History since we're at the end of the
00:02:30.200 Mary Queen of Scots season. Exciting stuff is coming up next is what I want to say.
00:02:34.840 I also wanted to share a book recommendation. So I've been doing several, I've had a lot of
00:02:42.940 author interviews lately on the show, and we're going to continue doing those. There's not always
00:02:46.820 space in the schedule to interview all the authors whose books I think would be of interest to you.
00:02:50.800 So just when there's one where I'm not able to do an interview, I want to let you know about it.
00:02:54.600 So especially because I've been trying to get more of a diversity of people who we talk about
00:02:59.660 on the show, other than like white, Christian, European, royal women, I want to get into different
00:03:06.980 people of different ethnicities, different religions from all different parts of the world. 1.00
00:03:10.040 And one of those groups of people that I'm trying to find more people to talk about are Jewish women. And so this book I thought would be a good one to talk about. So it's a new book coming out, Betty Friedan, Magnificent Disruptor by Rachel Stier.
00:03:22.700 So the feminist writer and activist Betty Friedan, born 1921, died in 2006, was the path-breaking
00:03:28.740 author of The Feminine Mystique. She was powerful and polarizing. In this biography, the first in 0.94
00:03:33.440 more than 20 years, Rachel Stier draws on Friedan's papers and on interviews with family,
00:03:38.180 colleagues, and friends to create a nuanced portrait. Friedan, born Betty Naomi Goldstein,
00:03:43.920 chafed at society's restrictions from a young age. As a journalist, she covered racism, sexism,
00:03:48.660 labor, class inequality, and anti-Semitism. As a wife and mother, she struggled to balance her
00:03:53.260 work and homemaking. Her malaise as a housewife and her research into the feelings of other women 0.74
00:03:58.060 resulted in The Feminine Mystique, published in 1963, which made her a celebrity. Using her
00:04:03.420 influence, Friedan co-founded the National Organization for Women, the National Women's
00:04:07.820 Political Caucus, and the National Association to Repeal Abortion Laws. She fought for the Equal 0.99
00:04:12.520 Rights Amendment, universal child care, and workplace protections for mothers, but she
00:04:16.540 disagreed with the women's liberation movement over, quote, sexual politics. Her volatility and 0.95
00:04:21.340 public conflicts fractured key relationships. So in this biography, the author, Shtier,
00:04:26.060 considers how Friedan's Judaism was essential to her feminism, presenting a new Friedan
00:04:30.420 for a new era. So again, that book is called Betty Friedan, Magnificent Disruptor by Rachel
00:04:35.760 Shtier, and has just been published. And I'll put a link to that in the show notes so you can
00:04:39.680 easily find a way to learn more about the book and buy a copy. And so I do also want to give
00:04:44.940 you the references for today's episode, which are, so there's a biography of Mary Queen of Scots by
00:04:51.440 Antonia Frazier. For a lot of the Mary Queen of Scots episodes, I was using the biography by John
00:04:56.040 Guy. Just that was the one I picked up first and that's the one I was using. But I found that the
00:05:00.100 biography by Antonia Frazier, which was the first major Mary Queen of Scots biography published like
00:05:05.360 in the 20th century. And it's the one that Llanowood Johnson especially loves. So I was happy
00:05:11.220 to find so much information in Antonia's book about the four Marys. So I use that as a big
00:05:16.460 reference for this episode. Also the book Daughters of the North by Jennifer Morag Henderson,
00:05:21.520 who we had on the podcast earlier talking about Jean Gordon. So you'll see why that book has a lot
00:05:26.560 of information about specifically one of these four Marys. I also got information from Claire
00:05:31.300 Hunter's book Embroidering Her Truth, which talks about Mary Queen of Scots and her embroidery
00:05:36.200 projects. Like again, you'll see how that interacts with this story. I also got information
00:05:40.680 from wikipedia which had just times and dates and facts and if you've listened to this podcast
00:05:46.480 before you know that i have no problem with using information from wikipedia often it's a quick way
00:05:52.760 to find some straightforward information and that can help lead you to other resources to dive deeper
00:05:58.300 into various things and then another book i used is mary queen of scots secretary william maitland
00:06:05.940 politician, reformer, and I'm sorry, the title is really small on my Kindle.
00:06:14.760 And conspirator is the final word. Anyway, so that's by Robert Stadel, and you'll learn why
00:06:20.400 I was reading about him. He's the one who in the Mary Queen of Scots episodes, we called Scottish
00:06:25.260 Machiavelli, and he has to do with the story as well. So I will also say, if you're new to this
00:06:30.200 podcast, welcome. Glad to have you here. And just know that I've done a whole lot of episodes about
00:06:36.940 Mary Queen of Scots leading up to this point. And there's a lot of nicknames I'm using for people.
00:06:40.820 So when you're listening to this, you're like, what's she talking about? What does Hollywood
00:06:43.400 icon Jimmy Stewart have to do with Mary Queen of Scots? Like just go with it. And if you want to
00:06:48.480 learn how and why all these people got these nicknames, you can listen back to the Mary Queen
00:06:52.100 of Scots season. So the four Marys, I love them as like, I've just loved the concept of them this
00:06:59.560 whole time you know when she arrived wherever she went when she arrived in scotland for instance
00:07:03.940 mary arrived with the marys and they're all dressed in like black and white and they just
00:07:07.760 having them as her entourage like you just picture them strutting down the streets of
00:07:12.940 anywhere they went just kind of like the slow motion walking montage at the beginning of a
00:07:18.120 law and order episode or that part of mean girls where they're walking slowly down the hallway
00:07:22.480 like they're just they're a girl gang and they're just like coordinated with each other within an
00:07:27.520 inch of their lives. Like I just love the energy of this. And I love that Mary had these besties
00:07:31.960 with her. So Mary Queen of Scots was born in Scotland. And then in 1548, when she's around
00:07:37.760 five years old, she was sent to France for her own protection and safety. At the time,
00:07:41.900 she was escorted by her four ladies in waiting, which is a cute thing to call a bunch of little 0.71
00:07:45.640 girls. They were all coincidentally named Mary. Now, I think in that TV show, The Serpent Queen, 1.00
00:07:51.020 I think they suggest that Mary Queen of Scots forced them all to change their name to Mary,
00:07:54.700 which is maybe something that other people have said in other places but is not true like as
00:07:59.540 we've learned from this podcast season there was like six names that anyone ever had in scotland
00:08:06.000 at this time and mary was one of those names it's not a coincidence they are all called mary like
00:08:10.740 when i was going to school and i am an elder millennial like every girl was called sarah or
00:08:15.920 megan and all the boys were called chris like names become popular and people all have the
00:08:21.860 same name and there's nothing nefarious about that necessarily. So they're all coincidentally
00:08:26.020 named Mary. Some of them were born before her, so it's not like they're all named after her.
00:08:30.060 It does seem likely that Mary, Queen of Scots' mother, Marie de Guise, personally chose these
00:08:35.920 young girls to be companions to the little girl queen. So these four all had Scottish fathers
00:08:41.700 and two of them had French mothers. So they could be relied upon to be loyal not only to their
00:08:46.440 Scottish Queen, but also to the French Queen Mother, Marie de Guise. So they are known to
00:08:52.260 history as the Four Marys, and their names are Mary Seaton, Mary Fleming, Mary Beaton, and Mary
00:08:57.680 Livingston. We're talking about a lot of people called Mary today, so I'm going to try to always
00:09:01.860 use their full name, sometimes just their last name. When I'm talking about the Queen, I'll say
00:09:06.060 Mary Queen of Scots, probably, just so you know, or maybe I'll say the Queen. So of these, they're
00:09:11.980 all of noble and high birth. All four came from notably honorable houses. Mary Fleming was also
00:09:17.700 a first cousin to Mary Queen of Scots because her grandfather, they had the same grandfather,
00:09:23.980 King James V. So Mary Fleming's mother was the illegitimate half-sister. Anyway, they were
00:09:29.920 cousins. Don't worry about it. There's a lot of people called James. I might have just misinterpreted
00:09:33.500 the family tree, but they were first cousins. They had the same grandfather. But Mary Fleming's was
00:09:38.620 in an illegitimate way, and Mary Queen of Scots was in a legitimate way. So they were called the
00:09:42.720 Marys, and it's spelled often as M-A-R-I-E-S, so like the Marys, because they were four people
00:09:49.280 called Marys, and they were always in a group. But also in Scots, at least at that time, and maybe
00:09:54.700 now also, people who speak Scots, let me know. The word Marie was used to describe, like it was a
00:10:00.440 word that just meant maids and honor attendant on the Queen. So they were called Mary, but also
00:10:04.180 the job was the Maryse. So in 1548, the four Maryse joined their queen. And again, these are
00:10:10.600 like girls who were like basically all five years old, some a bit younger, some a bit older.
00:10:15.200 And Inch Mahome Priory, so that is in Scotland, I think, in preparation for their journey to France.
00:10:20.860 If you go to Inch Mahome Priory, there's, I think there's plaques and things saying that they were
00:10:26.320 there, these little girls. The journey from France to Scotland was a rough sea voyage. I talked about
00:10:30.880 that in one of the first Mary Queen of Scots episodes, it was recorded during this journey,
00:10:35.100 all of the ladies, which again, they're called the ladies, they're like five-year-old girls.
00:10:38.860 They all came down with seasickness. And this is when they kind of entered the public sphere, 0.72
00:10:45.120 like their public lives began. Like they were people that, I don't know, today it's like the
00:10:50.060 paparazzi would follow them. Like they were just like child stars of their era. So their public
00:10:55.020 lives began simultaneously when they were sailing on the galley to France in 1548. But as we're
00:11:01.540 going to talk about, they weren't, they were a unit until like life reasons separated them. Like
00:11:07.520 they all ended their lives differently in different interesting ways, but they sort of emerged on the
00:11:12.840 public sphere simultaneously, like a new generation of the Mickey Mouse Club or whatever. So upon their
00:11:18.960 arrival in France, it was made clear that their stations were different. So Mary was sent to join
00:11:25.680 the royal children. So her future husband and in-laws, Princess Elizabeth, the whole gang,
00:11:32.720 while the ladies, the girls, these little girls are separated from her. So the four Marys were 0.99
00:11:38.080 initially sent away to be educated by Dominican nuns. And so that's where they spend most of this 0.61
00:11:43.440 time while Mary, like they still got to visit with her, I think, but Mary Queen of Scots was 0.97
00:11:47.260 living like doing queen shit and they were off kind of just being there if needed. But they 0.90
00:11:53.180 learned French, they learned calligraphy, like they had schooling and training and stuff while
00:11:56.940 they were in France. So the time in France was not as long as anyone expected. So Mary Queen of
00:12:03.440 Scots, she married Francis. Francis's dad died. And then Mary Queen of Scots ruled as Queen of
00:12:09.600 France until Francis himself died. So this is 1560. So they're all around 18 years old now.
00:12:14.760 and at this time also marie de guise um also had died so with no french husband with her mother
00:12:22.920 dead mary queen of scots was now like in a place where the best bet for her like the best and kind
00:12:27.260 only option was to return to scotland as queen so the four maries french education was completed
00:12:33.540 and they were sent to accompany their mistress back to scotland as they had accompanied her to
00:12:38.100 france so many years ago and scotland would be the place where the four maries would seek and
00:12:43.840 find their own husbands in most cases, as their now widowed queen would seek out a new husband 0.99
00:12:49.380 for herself. And we're going to go Mary by Mary instead of kind of what happened simultaneously
00:12:55.120 with each other, just so we can really focus on who each of these four Marys is. And that was one
00:13:01.200 of my first challenges when I was researching this was just to try to, from my own mind,
00:13:05.260 figure out kind of how can I think about them? What are the differences between them? And so
00:13:10.120 part of this is reading about them. And I would think, okay, which of the four ladies-in-waiting
00:13:15.080 on Reign does each of these match up with? And so on Reign, they're not called Mary, 1.00
00:13:19.680 I think for understandable reasons. It's just like, why would you name five main characters
00:13:25.480 all the same thing on a TV show? Of course they gave them different names, but each of the ladies
00:13:30.200 in waiting on Reign, which again, if you're new to this podcast is my favorite TV show of all time,
00:13:35.240 a perfect show, 10 out of 10, no notes. So they all were given different names. But so I was
00:13:39.900 trying to figure out for myself, which of these Marys like in real life inspired, which of the
00:13:43.600 ladies in waiting on rain. And then I also started thinking about, you know, kind of the iconicness
00:13:48.040 of having a group of four female friends. And there's so many versions of that. Like there's
00:13:54.060 the four March sisters and little women. There's the four golden girls on the golden girls.
00:13:59.440 Blackpink is the K-pop group. There's four members of that. The sister to the traveling pants,
00:14:04.660 There's four of them. And then also, if you combine two of the sisters in Pride and Prejudice,
00:14:10.440 there's basically four. If you just kind of treat Lydia and Kitty as all the same person.
00:14:14.580 So they all match up. And so just trying to think of them in the term of all those things
00:14:19.680 helped me keep them straight. And I don't know which of those references which of you were going
00:14:23.120 to vibe with. So I'll just give you them all so you can kind of imagine. So the first person we're
00:14:28.840 talking about is Mary Livingston. So the character on Rain, who she inspired, and I was kind of proud
00:14:35.680 of myself because I would guess and then I would look in the Rain wiki and I'm like, haha, I was
00:14:39.140 right. So the one who she inspired was Kenna on Rain, who if you remember, she was the, I don't
00:14:45.020 know, she's kind of the most sexy of all of them on Rain. She was sort of also very, she could be
00:14:52.440 impetuous. She just had a real sort of vitality about her and a real just flirtatiousness.
00:14:58.840 And so I was thinking Mary Livingston, if she was one of the sisters in Pride and Prejudice, 0.88
00:15:03.220 she would be Lydia mixed with Kitty because Kitty is kind of an appendage of Lydia.
00:15:08.380 If she was in Little Women, Mary Livingston would be Amy. 1.00
00:15:12.020 If Mary Livingston was in Golden Girls, she would be Blanche. 1.00
00:15:15.800 And if she was in Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I would say Bridget because she was 0.96
00:15:19.500 really full of life and energy and real vivacity.
00:15:24.100 And that's part of why I also think if she was in Blackpink, she would be Lisa.
00:15:28.540 She's got that same sort of energy about her. And also, Lisa is the main dancer in Blackpink.
00:15:33.760 And Mary Livingston, we don't know a lot about her, but we do know that she was really into
00:15:37.280 dancing. So that's who we're looking at. Kenna, Lisa, Lydia Kitty, Amy Blanche, Bridget from the
00:15:44.640 Traveling Pants. That's Mary Livingston. So Mary Livingston was born around 1541, the daughter of
00:15:50.920 Alexander Livingston, the fifth Lord Livingston, and his second wife, Agnes Douglas, a daughter of
00:15:56.920 John Douglas, the second Earl of Morton. So you're all saying it, a Douglas. So she's interestingly,
00:16:04.180 she's got these Douglas connections, although she was always loyal to Mary herself, despite
00:16:08.920 having some Douglas in her. We know that the Douglasists were often, except for with a few
00:16:16.020 exceptions, pretty shitty to Mary overall. But you know what? Some of the Douglasists were good. 0.97
00:16:20.760 Hashtag not all Douglasists. Young Willie was a Douglas. Anyway, Mary Livingston. So her father 0.89
00:16:25.980 Alexander was also Mary Queen of Scots's guardian. Her younger sister Magdalene Livingston was a
00:16:31.460 maid of honor to marry Queen of Scots. And so I don't have the specific numbers, but I do know
00:16:36.000 that Mary Queen of Scots, like if there's her at the middle of this circle, the outer layer,
00:16:40.600 like her confidants were the Marys, the four of them. And then there's another outer circle,
00:16:45.160 like they were the ladies in waiting, but the outer circle is the maid of honor and there's
00:16:48.840 more of them. And it's like a less status position, but a lot of, or several of the maid 0.87
00:16:53.500 of honors seem to have been the sisters of the Marys. So it's, it's not just Mary and these four
00:16:58.700 people, it's Mary and this like group of people who are all connected through family ties and
00:17:04.340 intermarriage and things. So Mary Livingston arrived with the other Marys in Scotland,
00:17:09.440 fabulous and black and white outfits, just like striking a pose in Scotland and all the men in
00:17:15.360 Scotland who, as far as I can tell, we're all approximately 40 years old. We're all just like,
00:17:20.400 what is this? Who are these cool young teens? Because they were all 18 at the time-ish.
00:17:27.140 So Mary Livingston and the others, they arrived bringing youthful, fun, party atmosphere. Like
00:17:32.600 Scotland, if you'll recall, had been in the midst of this reformation for quite a while. John Knox
00:17:38.220 screaming at everybody, calling everybody whores. There had been, you know, the asshole lords have 1.00
00:17:45.080 been turning against Marie of Guise. Like it's just, everyone's been at war constantly. Like 0.99
00:17:49.420 all these men they're all called james they're signing paperwork it's just like they've all 0.90
00:17:52.640 been through a lot of shit and then the marys arrive and it's just like oh my gosh they're 0.89
00:17:56.500 glamorous they're beautiful look at these outfits like look at this fun energy if we're talking 0.98
00:18:00.900 about like what rain got historically accurate like the way the rain dealt with mary going to
00:18:06.340 scotland she only had one lady in waiting with her at that point on the show but if you think
00:18:10.480 about the very first season one episode one of rain where it shows them arriving in france which
00:18:15.480 is, they kind of just changed facts around a little bit to have it happen that way. Anyway,
00:18:20.900 whatever, rain, no problems, 10 out of 10, no notes. They come on the scene, the Marys,
00:18:25.160 and there's a scene where they're all getting ready for this party and they're doing each
00:18:27.840 other's hair and makeup. And then they go to the party and they're dancing and everyone
00:18:31.020 is just like, who are these people? Like, what is this fun energy these people are bringing
00:18:34.840 to this like really, you know, straight laced royal court. And that's the vibe. Like they
00:18:39.020 just brought fun to a place that had been just in war constantly this whole time. So
00:18:44.960 John Knox hated her. He hated all of them. He hated Mary, Queen of Scots. He hated anyone
00:18:49.720 called Mary, apparently. He focused his attention on the four Marys because he was hopeful that if 0.99
00:18:55.300 there's scandal around them, he could use that to badmouth Mary, Queen of Scots by being like, 0.99
00:18:59.660 look at these shitty people she hangs out with. So for instance, early on in Mary's time in 0.97
00:19:04.680 Scotland, a French woman who served Mary, so one of the, not one of the Marys, but like a more
00:19:10.060 outer circle person, became pregnant by the queen's apothecary and the two of them. I'm not 0.74
00:19:16.620 sure exactly if they conspired to have an abortion or if like the baby was born and then they killed
00:19:21.860 the baby. I'm getting this information via John Knox, who's not a reliable source of information,
00:19:26.880 but we do know something happened with this French woman and with the apothecary. We know
00:19:30.440 pregnancy was involved and both the man and the woman were hanged for this that they had done. 1.00
00:19:35.780 And in fact, so John Knox was just like, look at these slutty whores who are around Mary 1.00
00:19:40.540 Queen of Scots. 1.00
00:19:41.260 They're all like this. 0.99
00:19:42.040 They're all just like getting pregnant out of wedlock, blah, blah, blah. 1.00
00:19:44.400 This means that she's a shitty person. 0.99
00:19:46.040 But he did not write in his record like what is true, which is the Mary Queen of Scots 0.99
00:19:49.760 herself insisted on this death sentence being carried out.
00:19:52.980 She was not here for like premarital sex, like abortion. 0.66
00:19:58.260 Like that was not her vibe. 1.00
00:19:59.720 She was overseeing a party atmosphere, but she's also like incredibly Catholic and following
00:20:05.240 those rules. 1.00
00:20:05.780 but john knox is just like okay but i need to like somehow make the marys seem like whores 0.87
00:20:10.960 and so when mary livingston who was the first of the marys to get married john knox was like 0.77
00:20:17.560 i think they're getting married because she also is pregnant outside of wedlock and that's why this 0.86
00:20:22.640 wedding preparation is being rushed and like she's a whore etc but the thing is like we know that 0.61
00:20:28.320 mary livingston's marriage was planned for about two months which seems like not a lot of time 0.93
00:20:32.380 maybe now considering how long people plan weddings. But for them, that was like 0.88
00:20:35.880 de rigor. That was normal. That was fine. Like her wedding, if anything, it was delayed.
00:20:40.560 So John Knox referred to Mary Livingston as lusty. I don't know if other people did,
00:20:44.980 but that's, I feel like the rain writers were like, great. Mary Livingston is lusty. Let's 0.99
00:20:49.560 make Kenna in the first episode, like masturbate in a hallway and get caught by the King and become 1.00
00:20:54.700 his mistress. Like they took the word and they ran with it. But the lustiness, I think that John 0.99
00:21:00.540 Knox even was referring to her is just how much fun she had dancing. I mentioned this to a friend
00:21:05.920 of the podcast, Lena Wood Johnson, who was like, oh, she probably just had boobs. That's probably 1.00
00:21:09.640 just like, if you have big boobs and you like dancing, someone like John Knox is just going 1.00
00:21:14.300 to be like, oh, look at that slut. Whatever. She liked dancing. Her husband or her fiance turned 1.00
00:21:19.820 husband was called John Sempil. John Knox called him the dancer. And I'm going to say a couple that
00:21:26.040 John Knox calls the dancer and lusty are just like, I'm here for it. Like, what a cool couple.
00:21:31.540 I like that. Anyway, she liked to dance. And John Knox didn't like that. But she was reliable to
00:21:38.880 marry Queen of Scots. She was given special charge of the Queen's jewels. Like all the Marys were 0.76
00:21:43.520 entirely loyal to Mary, who also liked dancing, for the record. So as we heard in the Mary episode,
00:21:49.860 she was always really supportive when people who worked for her were getting married. 0.67
00:21:53.160 so she paid for the wedding gown and the braille bouquet and she gave mary livingston a dowry of
00:21:58.200 500 pounds a year in land john knox because he's got to be himself um he disapproved of the grants
00:22:05.460 of lands because it included the barony of octor mukti scott's people did i say that right i hope
00:22:12.580 i did he just like thought that octor mukti that that barony should be given to someone else and 0.99
00:22:17.860 not to her but fuck you john knox guess what you're not the king like she's the queen and 1.00
00:22:22.300 she can do what she wants. And so actually, yeah. So Mary Livingston's first child was born a year 1.00
00:22:27.680 after the wedding. Like she was not, this is not a shotgun wedding. Like this was, if anything,
00:22:33.220 it was delayed. Like initially they were going to get married in the autumn of 1564 and then
00:22:37.980 it was delayed until 1565. So like John Knox full of shit, but what else is new? So who's his 0.99
00:22:42.600 husband? So his name was John Semphill of Belle Trees. His father was born in England. So he had
00:22:48.860 some connections to England. And he was in his like 40s because as seems to me, based on the
00:22:54.140 men I read about in terms of this episode, every man in Scotland was in his 40s when the Marys
00:23:00.000 arrived. So it's just kind of like, if they're going to get married, that is the age of the 0.64
00:23:02.840 husband they're going to get. So she's in her early 20s. He was in his 40s. Let's go. So the
00:23:07.800 marriage was celebrated at court during the Shrovetide feast on March 5th, which is called
00:23:11.980 Festerin's Eve in Scotland. And there was a mask for which a painter was paid 12 pounds for making
00:23:17.740 props. The English diplomat, Thomas Randolph, remember that name? Actually, remember this name.
00:23:25.160 I'm going to call him Randy Randolph because you'll see why. Anyway, so Randy Randolph called
00:23:30.900 this the great marriage of this happy Englishman that shall marry Lusty Livingston. So did John
00:23:36.160 Knox get everyone calling her Lusty Livingston? I hope she owned that. I hope she was like, yeah, 1.00
00:23:40.960 hell yeah, I am Lusty Livingston. Lust for life. So Randy had heard of a plan to invite the Earl 0.99
00:23:46.320 Bedford, who was governor of Berwick upon Tweed to the wedding because Semphill's mother was also
00:23:50.920 English. Earl Bedford had previously not visited Edinburgh. So part of this is like, you know how
00:23:56.360 in all the stories with Queen Elizabeth, it's like people needed to ask her permission to get
00:24:00.820 married and like nobody did. And she was always mad. So Mary Queen of Scots both A, liked matchmaking 0.96
00:24:05.920 and B, she knew that the marriages of the Marys, who were these really notable Scottish noble 0.94
00:24:12.520 women she wanted them to marry somebody that would be advantageous to her and to her politically 0.51
00:24:17.460 and to her royal court so i think clearly she wanted this connection to england by permitting 1.00
00:24:21.680 this marriage to simple the dancer so yeah as the first of the marys to marry lusty livingston's
00:24:29.540 wedding attracted a great deal of attention because like the marys were just like the
00:24:33.420 celebrities of the time so french and english ambassadors attended the event and they wrote
00:24:37.340 a lot of details about the event because again like scotland was just like these 40 year old men
00:24:41.060 who had been signing paperwork and screaming at each other for like 20 years. And now it's just
00:24:45.440 like a fun wedding, like something nice and youthful and enjoyable. In a report, so the
00:24:51.320 French ambassador wrote a letter to Catherine de' Medici reporting on this event. He wrote,
00:24:55.660 the Queen Mary has begun to marry off her Marys and says she wished herself were one of the band.
00:25:01.200 You know, she wanted to get married as well. And then, you know, she did. So things we talked
00:25:07.600 about an excruciating detail in previous episodes so mary befriended rizzio rizzio was murdered
00:25:13.240 mary escaped then she came back in triumph um her husband durnley was his house was exploded he was
00:25:20.060 strangled tits out mermaid posters um she's captured by bothwell who forced him to marry her
00:25:27.600 and so the next like mention of mary livingston after the wedding is so after all that stuff 0.99
00:25:34.720 happened with mary so eventually mary um she's taken in by the asshole lords then call themselves 0.95
00:25:39.460 the confederate lords post bothwell marriage so there was that like standoff bothwell ran away 0.93
00:25:44.660 to denmark and mary was taken prisoner she was you know on the horse being led by the banner with
00:25:49.800 her like screaming baby picture on it being like avenge me oh lord so at that point mary was brought
00:25:55.220 to hollyrood the castle and there she's reunited with mary livingston as well as one of the other
00:26:02.040 Mary's, Mary Seaton. Supper was prepared for her. And I just feel like everything Mary went through,
00:26:07.000 like everything Mary Livingston had watched Mary go through, they're just like, oh my God,
00:26:10.980 my girls. Like just to be like, you know, I don't know. I just think of like in RuPaul's Drag Race
00:26:15.080 when Ru is like, bring me my girls. Like Mary's just with her girls and like, thank God. So they
00:26:20.440 got to hang out for a bit, but then Mary Queen of Scots was taken away and allowed to bring the
00:26:23.880 Marys with her. Various things happened. Mary Queen of Scots was in Lock Leaven. Then she went
00:26:28.600 up in england and after she went to england mary livingston retained some of the jewels some of
00:26:34.060 mary the queen's jewels she sent them to i don't know she like inherited them so she had them sent
00:26:39.560 to her where she was staying at bolton castle her husband john semple the dancer was charged at this
00:26:45.120 point um the regent was lennox who was darnley's dad so you remember the whole thing like mary was
00:26:50.180 taken to jail and just it was just a free for all everyone just started stealing all of her jewels
00:26:54.220 So Lennox was like, return these jewels and furs.
00:26:57.420 John Semple, the dancer, to his credit, refused.
00:26:59.820 He was imprisoned in Blackness Castle.
00:27:03.140 Like years later, more people were questioned about any jewels still in her keeping.
00:27:08.100 I don't know if her husband was eventually released.
00:27:09.940 Didn't read that in any of my books.
00:27:11.660 But eventually, I assume he was.
00:27:13.440 People are just always in and out of jail at this point. 1.00
00:27:15.680 Mary Livingston outlived her husband as a widow in January 1582. 1.00
00:27:20.380 she brought legal action against her father-in-law over the possession of some lands. 0.66
00:27:24.960 After last week's or last time's best of hard work episode, I'm just always here for a woman 0.99
00:27:28.760 taking a man to court. Mary Livingston, though she died that same year, she was aged around 39. 0.98
00:27:35.080 And this was about five years before the execution of Mary Queen of Scots. And she had some children
00:27:41.740 who included Sir James Semple, who became a Scottish ambassador to England from 1591 to 1600.
00:27:48.360 so the next mary we're talking about is mary fleming and this one is not as hard to deduce
00:27:55.000 which of the ladies in waiting in rain was inspired by her because her last name is fleming
00:27:59.040 and one of the ladies in waiting on rain is called lola fleming so the thing with mary fleming
00:28:04.560 is that she was the most beautiful of the marys like the marys were uniformly beautiful i think
00:28:10.840 it's the sort of thing especially as a group they were beautiful but among them everyone kind of
00:28:16.580 agreed mary fleming was the most beautiful so in that sense if we're looking at like sort of like
00:28:22.460 this classically like in a group of four the one who provides the visual now i want to say all the
00:28:29.020 members of blackpink are gorgeous obviously but officially jisoo's role is visual so she's there
00:28:35.820 like mary fleming is providing the visual mary livingston is the dancer but they're both gorgeous
00:28:41.500 if we're looking at on golden girls i think she's like rose who again you know i don't think any of
00:28:47.760 the golden girls are prettier or less pretty than the others but just kind of like the gentle soft
00:28:51.700 nice one which is why i would ascribe her to jane bennett in prime prejudice and meg march 1.00
00:28:57.120 in little women so mary fleming is the pretty one um and sister to the traveling pants that would be 0.96
00:29:03.160 um lena the one played by alexis bladel in the movies so mary fleming was also she's not just 0.98
00:29:10.340 beautiful, or maybe this is why she was beautiful. She was a cousin of Mary Queen of Scots, as I
00:29:15.740 mentioned before. So she has this royal blood in her. So she was the youngest child of Malcolm
00:29:21.760 Fleming, the third Lord Fleming, and Lady Janet Stewart. So her mother, Janet, was an illegitimate 0.86
00:29:28.220 daughter of James IV of Scotland, Mary Queen of Scots' grandfather, Margaret Tudor's husband.
00:29:35.420 So Janet was also named governess to baby Mary.
00:29:38.660 Mary Fleming was born the same year as Mary Queen of Scots.
00:29:42.280 And Janet Fleming was chosen to be, well, she was a governess.
00:29:46.180 And then Mary Fleming became one of the baby Queen's baby companions because they were also cousins.
00:29:52.080 Janet Fleming, who we talked about in one of the Mary Queen of Scots episodes.
00:29:56.180 Yes, she's the one who went over and became mistress to the King of France and had an illegitimate child with him and then was kicked out of French court. 0.65
00:30:04.080 That was her. I feel like they took some of her story for Kenna on rain. But so Antonia Frazier
00:30:10.480 in her biography, she suggests that Mary Fleming was probably Mary, you know, Scott's closest
00:30:15.640 friend because they were cousins. They were all like very well-off, you know, powerful young
00:30:23.680 women of the era. But Mary Fleming being like part royal, I think maybe she could get Mary in
00:30:28.680 a way that the other ones couldn't. So the same year that Mary Fleming was born, her father was
00:30:32.420 taken prisoner by the English at the Battle of Solway Moss. Like all four of the Marys had had
00:30:37.160 like some real stressful situations by the time they were five. Like all of their families,
00:30:42.560 like because they were in Scotland where it was just like constant war. So like all of the men
00:30:46.980 were fighting on one side or the other of the war and often taken prisoner and stuff. Anyway,
00:30:51.560 so 1548, Mary Fleming, five years old. Mary Queen of Scots, five years old. Janet, adult aged,
00:30:57.340 super sexy and they went over to the court of king henry ii of france so mary queen of scots
00:31:03.360 again separated from the marys i will note that mary fleming's father had died the previous years
00:31:08.800 when she was four so her father was taken prisoner the year she was born and then he died when she
00:31:13.080 was four at the battle of pinky her mother had this affair with the french king and the product
00:31:18.240 of which was a son henry d'angélême who was born around 1551 and then her mother was kicked out so
00:31:24.520 that's a lot for mary fleming to go through blank like as a very young person but i feel like
00:31:30.500 everyone's life was kind of high key in that way so i'm sure american scots could understand maybe
00:31:36.860 help her out with it so in 1554 so while they're all in france like this is proof that they did
00:31:42.720 get to hang out sometimes so there was a mask um performed in france mary fleming had a major role
00:31:50.500 in it, I think maybe because of her noble roots and maybe because of her beauty. So when they
00:31:56.620 returned to Scotland, do you remember there's a thing? So one of the people who came back with
00:32:01.880 her from France to Scotland was this poet called Pierre Chastelard, who was like kind of Mary
00:32:08.200 Queen of Scots a stalker and he like hid in her bedroom and stuff. So after that, Mary Queen of
00:32:13.480 Scots was obviously freaked out and panicked and scared. And so she had Mary Fleming was the one
00:32:18.300 who she called for and who would join her and like be her roommate and stay in the room with
00:32:22.040 her to make her feel better. So that also speaks to her seeing Mary Fleming as kind of her
00:32:25.920 closest friend, her bestie of all the besties. And May 26, 1562, the four Marys attended the
00:32:35.540 Queen at the ceremony of the opening of the Parliament of Scotland. Randy Randolph watched
00:32:40.700 them. He described the processions, quote, four virgins, maids, Marys, demoiselles of honor,
00:32:46.840 or the queen's mignons call them as please your honor but a fairer sight was never seen
00:32:51.880 like every man at royal court was 40 years old and just like horny for these marys is what was
00:32:59.060 happening and the marys were super hot and that's what was going on so during the 12th day of
00:33:04.340 christmas pageant in january 1564 mary fleming played the part of the queen of the bean and we
00:33:10.800 talked about this i think before and there was a memorable episode of rain where there was a queen
00:33:14.600 of the bean that's where there's the cake and whoever gets the slice of cake with the bean in
00:33:19.560 it gets treated as queen for the day mary fleming in this instance got that and so she got see randy 1.00
00:33:25.940 randolph wrote about her at this mary fleming was the great beauty of the marys she had royal blood
00:33:30.940 where the others had not and was the most beautiful as well not randy but another person who saw her
00:33:35.540 wrote about her as the flower of the flock so here's randy explaining her outfit the queen of
00:33:42.020 the bean was that day in a gown of cloth of silver her head her neck her shoulders the rest of her
00:33:46.360 body so beset with stones that more in our whole jewel house were not to be found so she i'm in
00:33:51.940 some sort of like diamond encrusted cat suit like in britney spears toxic music video i'm sure it's
00:33:58.180 not that but it would be that effect but you know non-see-through dress form randy continues the
00:34:03.320 queen herself that day appareled in colors white and black no neither jewel or gold about her that
00:34:07.820 day but the ring i brought her from queen elizabeth hanging at her breast with a lace of
00:34:11.600 black and white about her neck so mary is wearing her trademark black and white mary fleming is like
00:34:17.240 a disco ball practically and also extremely beautiful so william kirk keldy of grange
00:34:22.940 who's a guy who just like comes up here and there in this whole saga but not enough like gave him a
00:34:27.560 nickname but enough that like his name is memorable so he september 1564 was the one who wrote that
00:34:34.300 the royal secretary, William Maitland, aka Scottish Machiavelli, from numerous episodes
00:34:41.620 of the Mary Queen Scots series, was showing an interest in Mary Fleming. And William Kirkcaldy
00:34:47.140 wrote, I doubt not, but you understand me by now that our secretary's wife is near dead and he is
00:34:53.300 a suitor to Mrs. Fleming, who is as fit for him as I am to be Pope, because she was gorgeous and
00:34:58.920 he was old. Scottish Machiavelli was, he was smitten. He told his friend, William Cecil,
00:35:05.740 that just being around Mary Fleming brought him at least one merry hour in the day.
00:35:10.120 Their age difference for the record. He was 36 and she was 22. So he's, you know, slightly younger
00:35:17.160 than the 40 year old men, but just slightly. Anyway, Randy said, wise as he is, he will show
00:35:22.940 himself a fool the way he carried on with his crush on Mary Fleming. So clearly she was like, 0.98
00:35:27.620 so cool so hot Scottish Machiavelli is just this like big old nerd comparatively but she was into 0.97
00:35:34.820 it and Mary Queen of Scots was like I could use this match like okay I'll allow it so when it
00:35:40.680 became clear like these two were gonna get married so this was like a three-year courtship which was
00:35:45.660 the talk of the English and Scottish courts because Scottish Machiavelli was such an important
00:35:49.060 person Mary Fleming was so close to the queen and she had royal blood as well Randy was cranky
00:35:54.820 clearly jealous. He wrote that Scottish Machiavelli had been pushed out of the center
00:36:00.320 of political affairs in order to have the time to make love to his coy mistress, Mary Fleming.
00:36:05.560 So this was during the Rizzio era when Scottish Machiavelli was in fact pushed aside so the queen
00:36:11.800 could have an actually helpful person as her secretary who wasn't actively trying to betray
00:36:15.940 her. So Mary Fleming did wind up marrying Scottish Machiavelli in a ceremony at Stirling
00:36:20.960 Kessel on January 6th, 1566. They did not have a honeymoon because he had to leave town right
00:36:26.900 away to go to that conference where he, Hollywood icon, Jimmy Stewart, Bothwell, and 75 men named
00:36:32.300 James all signed paperwork being like, let's work together to murder Darnley. Great. Thanks. We're
00:36:37.980 all going to do this. Here's the paperwork saying we're going to do this. So it's quite a fraught
00:36:42.800 time. And this is where it gets really interesting actually, because Mary Fleming, Mary Queen of
00:36:47.340 Scott's closest friend, her cousin, marries this guy who is Scottish Machiavelli. He's like,
00:36:52.400 sometimes on Mary's side, often not on Mary's side. Like, where does this leave Mary Fleming
00:36:56.720 in this scenario? And where it leaves her might surprise you. This is where I do want to mention
00:37:01.720 on Rain. There is a plot line where Lola, the character who's inspired by Mary Fleming,
00:37:08.220 gets involved with a guy named Narcisse, who is amazing on Rain. He's such a camp,
00:37:13.420 amazing character he's so villainous like it's a great character and unexpectedly he and Lola
00:37:20.160 Fleming on Rain they kind of hit it off and they're both just kind of like scheming and sexy
00:37:24.880 she just takes a lot of sexy baths um and he like keeps walking in on her being like no we can't be
00:37:30.280 together and she's like we should be together he's like no we can't and that's kind of what the vibe
00:37:34.540 is honestly between Mary Fleming and Scottish Machiavelli here so I was messaging with my
00:37:39.960 friend and tits of brigade member isabel who was as into rain as i was we both wrote these recaps
00:37:46.520 for it for a fashion website at the time and isabel mentioned she wants recognition always
00:37:51.420 for young women who weren't taken advantage of by old men but gamed them back and became a sneaky af
00:37:56.580 couple and that's the vibe of mary fleming and scottish machiavelli it's not just like oh no
00:38:02.640 like scottish machiavelli is taking advantage of this poor woman like this poor naive woman like 0.97
00:38:08.580 mary fleming had been through shit by the time she was five years old like she her mother had 0.99
00:38:13.600 an affair with a french king like she has her illegitimate half-brother is like a nobleman 0.98
00:38:17.860 in france like she's she's on top of things like she is also scheming she's also like at his level
00:38:25.440 i would say and that's what we're going to see as the relationship progresses like he's not
00:38:29.120 okay we'll just go through kind of what all the steps are here and they're interesting and
00:38:34.360 intriguing relationship in which i would argue she's almost a lady mcbeth type figure like just
00:38:38.980 subtly manipulating him to the point where eventually he's just doing whatever she says 0.51
00:38:42.460 although i'm sure he thinks he's manipulating her but in fact she was always in charge 0.81
00:38:47.120 so like everything that happened there was shitty scosh mcfile was on the shitty side of it he was 0.92
00:38:53.080 on the side of like rizzio being murdered he was on the side of blowing up darnley's house 0.86
00:38:57.300 he was like one of the people who was like complicit in convincing mary to marry bothwell
00:39:02.820 he was one of the people who like he was never on a good side of anything while he was also married
00:39:08.460 to mary's best friend so it's like what is this situation what is this relationship so but first
00:39:14.820 i do also want to mention mary fleming's sister who is also one of the associated people in the
00:39:20.660 royal court was margaret who is the witch who i mentioned she was there when mary queen of scots 0.63
00:39:25.560 was giving birth margaret fleming was brought in to transfer the labor pains from mary queen of 0.95
00:39:30.080 scots into somebody else which didn't work but she was a witch and i'm not going to talk too much
00:39:34.260 about her right now because perhaps i will talk about her in more depth closer to halloween
00:39:38.960 wait and see anyway so yes gosh machiavelli complicit in getting queen mary to mary bothwell
00:39:45.600 mary fleming might have helped in that instance to try and persuade her as well like mary fleming
00:39:51.940 loyal to mary queen of scots i think like undoubtedly her whole life was dedicated to
00:39:57.720 serving Mary Queen of Scots. So it might've been, she felt like this is maybe the best option for
00:40:01.820 her at the time. So it's not just like, ha ha, let's trick her. Like Scottish Machiavelli was
00:40:05.560 like, ha ha, let's trick her into marrying Bothwell because then I, Scottish Machiavelli can get more
00:40:09.620 power. And he always wanted to like ally with England, I think. So Mary Fleming was certainly
00:40:14.780 aware of these schemes and was maybe helping with these schemes. Like when Mary Queen of Scots was
00:40:19.280 taken captive at that castle, Mary Fleming was the only one of the Marys who waited on her there 0.70
00:40:24.420 at Dunbar, where Mary Queen of Scots was being held prison by Bothwell. So that's where she was
00:40:28.320 like, Mary Fleming is, she's in on the scheme. I don't want to be like, she wasn't in on this.
00:40:33.480 She was, but it's kind of like no one knew how this was going to shake out really. But ultimately,
00:40:38.540 by the time Mary Queen of Scots was in prison, like in, like taken by the Confederate asshole 0.98
00:40:43.540 lords, Mary Fleming's influence seems clear because Scottish Machiavelli fully switched sides. 0.97
00:40:49.260 He was remorseful for what he had done. He showed remorse for his actions and he set the rest of his
00:40:55.200 life to being on team Mary Queen of Scots. Like Mary Fleming manipulated him right back. Like
00:41:01.880 this is where I feel like she wasn't just some sort of little naive younger woman. 22 to 36 is
00:41:06.960 a substantial age gap. In the pantheon of vulgar history, it's not that much. But also Mary Fleming
00:41:13.340 clearly had a real good head on her shoulders here. So she had a son. Well, her first child
00:41:17.640 was a son named James after I think Mary Queen of Scots's son James and this baby was born around
00:41:22.880 the same time Mary was being imprisoned and the casket letters scenario was happening. So there's
00:41:28.040 all these rumors like I'm not gonna get into the casket letters of it all just like know that there 0.99
00:41:34.000 were these letters and some they were clearly not written by Mary Queen of Scots but the asshole 0.97
00:41:38.440 Lord said that they were. So who wrote these? The handwriting apparently looked like hers but all 0.96
00:41:43.020 the Marys had had the same handwriting tutor. So there's some people who think like, was
00:41:47.460 Mary Fleming one of the people who helped write these forged letters because she was married to
00:41:52.060 Scottish Machiavelli, but they were all on Mary's side. And frankly, Scottish Machiavelli later did
00:41:56.900 admit he, when he was a secretary, he had sometimes forged the Queen's handwriting. So like he also
00:42:01.460 could, like Mary Queen Scots said herself, like my handwriting is really basic. Lots of people
00:42:06.400 could copy it. And nevermind like Walsingham is on the scene. Anyway, so Mary Queen Scots is in
00:42:11.560 Loch Leven in prison, March 1568, Scottish Machiavelli sent her a ring that was apparently
00:42:17.560 a gift from Mary Fleming. So it was enameled with a lion and a mouse from Aesop's fable.
00:42:23.480 So there's so much animal imagery in all of these episodes. And I know I mentioned this before,
00:42:28.620 but I'll just remind you now that we know more about who Mary Fleming is. So the imagery in
00:42:33.340 this might have meant like the mouse represents Scottish Machiavelli, who was gnawing away at a
00:42:37.980 net surrounding the lion who represents Mary Queen of Scots. So seemingly this ring symbolism
00:42:44.080 was showing the Scottish Machiavelli is trying to help, which he was. So Mary Fleming seems like
00:42:49.600 was really placing him under pressure to help with Queen Mary Queen of Scots's release. And he was
00:42:55.820 doing it. Like she knew that this was what needed to happen. And he was on board with what she was
00:43:02.820 suggesting. So it's all really schemey and complicated. Like I don't, I'm not trying to
00:43:08.140 say like Mary Fleming was this like perfect sainted person. Like I think she was a scheming
00:43:12.220 badass simultaneous to being loyal to Mary. And she was working really hard, like, and she has
00:43:18.160 this really influential family. So like with her family's backing, like the Flemings, you know,
00:43:23.720 that's a lot of people who would be there to support, to go to war basically. But then 0.59
00:43:28.120 Scottish Machiavelli is also politically motivated to try and provide the evidence to discredit her
00:43:33.120 in the form of the casket letters. When Mary Queen of Scots was in England, Scottish Machiavelli was
00:43:38.180 one of the people who was trying to help her marriage to T-Dog, that potential treason marriage
00:43:43.940 that she was going to do. While simultaneously, he was also, he was like a spokesman for her
00:43:49.320 restoration as queen in Scotland. He had the support of the Flemings, also the Gordons, 0.95
00:43:54.800 that's a cock of the north family the hamiltons aka the babysitters club he was also supporting
00:43:59.620 t-dog against william sesal like he's playing all the angles and all the sides um on october 11th
00:44:06.120 he was able to send mary fleming to mary queen of scots with a transcript of one of the casket
00:44:11.260 letters and that was the whole thing mary queen of scots just wanted to read the casket letters
00:44:14.560 and no one will let her read them mary fleming also brought along a note where scottish machiavelli
00:44:18.340 was offering his assistance to combat this evidence which he had maybe produced mary queen
00:44:24.100 Scots was sensibly like, thanks, but no thanks. Like your husband sucks, but I love you, Mary 0.99
00:44:29.000 Fleming. Like, nice to see you. Okay. So Mary Kay Scots, she's in England for 19 years, during 1.00
00:44:35.520 which time Hollywood icon, Jimmy Stewart was regent and then he was assassinated. Eventually
00:44:40.580 Jeremy Jam from Parks and Recreation took over to become the new regent. Everybody hated him.
00:44:46.180 Scottish Machiavelli hated him. They were huge enemies of each other. Scottish Machiavelli though
00:44:51.760 had been ill for quite a while. He had some sort of creeping paralysis, like his legs, like just
00:44:57.760 slowly more and more of him was becoming paralyzed. I don't know what disease or condition that is.
00:45:03.780 Randy, Randy Randolph is still like messy drama queen living for drama. Like, thank God writing
00:45:09.880 us all these letters about what was going on. By 1570, he wrote the Scottish Machiavelli's legs
00:45:15.440 were clean gone, like he couldn't use them. His body was so weak he could not walk, even to sneeze
00:45:20.540 caused extreme pain um randy was still not over him stealing mary fleming allegedly from him so 1.00
00:45:27.520 he wrote to this hath blessed joy of a young wife brought him so he's just being like fuck you you 0.99
00:45:32.580 stole my girlfriend i hate you anyway but yeah so they're firmly on team let's reinstate mary as 0.98
00:45:38.780 the queen so scottish machiavelli and mary fleming were both in edinburgh castle in 1573
00:45:43.800 when it was held by supporters of mary queen of scots against an english army supporting the
00:45:48.320 government of James. Well, I mean, baby BJ, basically. So they were both captured when the
00:45:54.820 castle was surrounded. She was surrendered to, at this point, the regent. Yeah, Jeremy Jam,
00:46:00.140 still the regent. She was kept a prisoner in Robert Gourlay's house. At this time,
00:46:04.360 Scottish Machiavelli was carried out of the castle on a litter because he was unable to
00:46:07.900 stand or walk. And eventually he died a month later in June. He had been found dead in his bed
00:46:13.760 where he was being kept under house arrest. And it was assumed he took poison to kill himself
00:46:18.020 in quote, the Roman fashion. So that Cleopatra, Mark Anthony vibes, like he would rather die by
00:46:24.480 his own hand than be executed. So he was age 45 and he was left unburied, which was the usual
00:46:31.120 thing for traitors, which he technically was. It was described, I think in the Antonio Fraser book,
00:46:38.000 his body became a feasting ground for maggots. So do you remember in the earlier episode,
00:46:44.040 the whole thing with the cock over the north scenario where he died and then they like took 0.54
00:46:49.160 his body and then like propped his body up in parliament and like put his like dead corpse on 0.99
00:46:52.900 trial. Like I think they were gearing up for that sort of thing. So Mary Fleming wrote a moving
00:46:57.280 personal plea to William Sassel, who had been friends with Scottish Machiavelli. She said her
00:47:01.340 body of her husband, quote, which one alive has not been spared in her highness service may now
00:47:06.260 after his death receive no shame or ignominy. And so William Sassel was like, this is a well-written
00:47:11.000 letter handwriting looks suspiciously like mary queen of scots but whatever so he got queen 0.98
00:47:15.880 elizabeth to read it and queen elizabeth was like fuck this scottish thing about like putting bodies 0.98
00:47:21.160 on trial like this is not cool please bury this man and so they did again the jewels of it all 0.96
00:47:27.180 so twice i think that same year 1573 yeah mary fleming was ordered to return some jewelry of
00:47:34.440 rubies and diamonds which had belonged to mary queen of scots i don't know if she did but just 0.96
00:47:39.320 like these assholes are just trying to get touched on all these jewels of people. Talk 0.99
00:47:42.760 that Mary gave to people legitimately. Anyway, eventually Scarish Machiavelli's estates and
00:47:47.940 properties were restored by grant of King James, baby BJ. And then she and her son were granted a
00:47:54.380 restoration or rehabilitation. So they were no longer seen as traitors, the wife or son of a
00:47:58.520 traitor. And she was allowed the benefit of a property that Scarish Machiavelli had given her
00:48:02.900 Bolton in East Lothian. So her son, James, we're going to hear about in a bit, just something
00:48:09.300 else he did. He later became a Catholic and lived in France and Belgium in self-imposed exile. And
00:48:14.500 she had a daughter who she named Margaret. In 1581, Mary Queen of Scots asked Elizabeth for 0.94
00:48:20.060 permission for Mary Fleming to come and visit her, but there's no evidence that Mary Fleming
00:48:25.460 went. So maybe she didn't get permission. She did marry again, someone called George Meldrum of
00:48:30.700 Fivey. And she died aged around 39, 1581, about four years after the execution of Mary Queen of
00:48:37.900 scots and now we're just going to take a break for a word from our sponsors the war is over and both
00:48:46.160 sides lost kingdoms were reduced to cinders and armies scattered like bones in the dust
00:48:52.460 now the survivors claw to what's left of a broken world praying the darkness chooses someone else
00:48:59.520 tonight but in the shadow dark the darkness always wins this is old school adventuring
00:49:06.520 at its most cruel.

00:52:26.780 And we're back, which leads us to our next Mary, Mary Beaton.
00:52:32.520 So she was described as the bravest and most intelligent of the group. 0.95
00:52:38.920 So she's kind of the smart bookish one.
00:52:41.760 So on Rain, she inspired the character of Greer.
00:52:45.900 And if she was in Pride and Prejudice, she would be Lizzie Bennet. 0.90
00:52:49.380 If she was in Little Women, she'd be Joe on Golden Girls. 0.61
00:52:52.920 She'd be Dorothy in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. 0.52
00:52:56.200 She would be Carmen. And I would say in terms of Blackpink, she would be Rosé because Rosé is,
00:53:02.300 I don't know enough about Blackpink to say if Rosé is like really bookish, but I do know that
00:53:06.040 she's really committed to music and artistry in that way. And so she's very thoughtful. And that's
00:53:10.880 where I would put her if we're describing everybody in terms of Blackpink. Anyway,
00:53:15.220 Mary Beaton. So born in 1541. She was a child of Robert Beaton, the fourth Laird of Craich. 0.94
00:53:21.960 that's my attempt at scots pronunciation scots people come at me it really feels like i'm saying
00:53:28.640 a cling on word but the fourth laird of craig her mother was joanna or jane renwall so her mother
00:53:35.760 had been one of marie de guise's ladies-in-waiting her aunt mary beaton's aunt jenna beaton was a
00:53:43.200 mistress of james hepburn earl of bothwell yes that bothwell everyone's connected in this
00:53:49.360 situation. So she was called by Mary Queen of Scots, the Duenna, which I think is a term that
00:53:56.380 just indicates that she's the eldest of the four Marys. So she's kind of like Mary in charge. So
00:54:02.440 in that way, she's like Jisoo from Blackpink, but I'm still going to say she's the Rose.
00:54:06.120 She's like the leader. She's a leader. You know, K-pop bands have a leader. If she was in BTS,
00:54:09.880 she'd be the RM. So her grandfather, Sir John Beaton, if you're thinking like I've heard the
00:54:16.440 name Beaton before. I'm going to explain to you why. So her grandfather, Sir John Beaton,
00:54:20.560 was the hereditary keeper of the Royal Palace of Falkland. The Beatons of Crake were a younger
00:54:26.260 branch of that same family. So the senior line of Beatons had been given to Scotland Cardinal
00:54:31.660 David Beaton, who is the dirtbag guy who murdered John Knox's mentor. And then he was murdered and
00:54:38.820 hung up in a castle by John Knox and some other people. David Beaton, I called him because of
00:54:45.600 how they say the name Harry Beaton in Brigadoon. Anyway, the Beatons, big deal in early time
00:54:52.520 Scotland, perhaps still a big deal in modern time Scotland. Who's to say? Also, one of Mary Queen
00:54:57.740 of Scots' faithful ambassadors was Archbishop James Beaton. So just Beaton's like prestigious
00:55:03.000 name. So again, at the age of five, Mary Beaton was chosen by Marie de Guise as one of the four
00:55:07.620 Marys to go to France with the little kindergarten aged queen. So Mary Fleming was like the prettiest
00:55:15.580 of all of them um mary beaton was apparently the most classically beautiful of the four
00:55:20.880 so for saying like i don't know if that means you know mary fleming was more kind of like
00:55:25.720 catalog and mary beaton was more kind of like editorial in terms of america's next top model
00:55:31.340 but what's where she specifies herself from the others is that she was she was less flamboyant 0.70
00:55:38.740 as mary fleming or mary livingston she was bolder than mary seaton who we haven't talked about but
00:55:42.860 who was quite shy and quiet. She was again described as the bravest and most intelligent
00:55:47.100 of the quartet. She also loved books. She loved reading. Apparently she was tall, plump, and pretty
00:55:51.500 with light hair and dark eyes. She was intelligent and well-read, speaking fluent French and also
00:55:56.740 understanding Italian. She loved poetry. She signed one for letters Marie de Bethune. So like
00:56:03.680 if your name is Mary Beaton, but you're growing up in France and your mother is French, like I
00:56:08.380 could see that you put your name in a french way especially where people are word spellings or you
00:56:15.420 can change your mind all the time in this era so mary beaton aka marie de bethune her younger
00:56:20.280 sister lucriche beaton also joined mary's household as one of the not ladies-in-waiting but the like
00:56:27.300 maids of honor so again like another sister who's on the scene mary beaton attracted the attentions
00:56:32.460 of an older man kel saprice but which older man it is might surprise you it was in fact randy
00:56:37.760 randy randolph who i guess had pivoted from one mary to another who was still single so at the
00:56:44.420 time of this courtship 1564 randy was 45 and mary was 21 so again randy was queen elizabeth's
00:56:52.540 ambassador to the scottish court he was like hey mary beaton like can you be my wife slash mistress
00:56:59.560 and also can you spy on mary queen of scots for me for queen elizabeth and mary beaton was like 1.00
00:57:04.260 fuck you, of course not. What do you know? Like, fuck off, Randy. Although they were like known to 1.00
00:57:10.040 be sort of courting or like hanging out with each other informally. And April 1565, Mary Beaton and
00:57:15.960 Randy were a team. They played some sort of game called Bowls with Mary Queen of Scots and Lord
00:57:22.860 Darnley, which is just like a cursed double date. Honestly, Mary Beaton and Randy, Mary Queen of
00:57:28.480 Scots and Darnley playing, I don't know, cards or bowling or whatever. Anyway, Mary Beaton and Randy
00:57:33.940 one. Darnley gave Mary Beaton a ring and a brooch with two agates worth 50 crowns. One of Randy's 0.98
00:57:41.160 Scottish friends, Alexander Clark, sent him a letter teasing him about, I love that these like
00:57:45.740 40-year-old men are all throwing themselves at the Marys and all the other 40-year-old men are
00:57:50.220 making fun of them for it. Like, it's good to have a friend to keep you in check like that.
00:57:54.140 But it also puts it in perspective that like some of these do end up in marriages, but also people 0.99
00:57:58.720 are just like you're a fool she's young like you're a goofball so alexander clark wrote this 0.98
00:58:04.220 letter saying quote and as to your mistress mary beaten she is both oh this is like he was making 1.00
00:58:10.660 up fake words where it's like words are hard enough to read in only time letters but he's
00:58:14.280 making up words alexander clark wrote and as to your mistress mary beaten she's both darimpus
00:58:19.900 and sclerod and ruined it and you in like manner without contrapection or clipe perant so you're 0.98
00:58:27.300 worth little money. Honestly, these guys are just nerds. I don't know. George Buchanan, who you may
00:58:32.840 remember, I'm all these, I'm just like, Oh, him. When these names pop up, he was the guy who was
00:58:38.740 friends with Hollywood icon, Jimmy Stewart in France. And then he came over to be Mary Queen
00:58:42.640 of Scots is like Latin tutor. And he also wrote some of the mask plays. Then later after Mary was
00:58:47.640 arrested, George Buchanan is the one who wrote the erotic fan fiction about her. But before all that,
00:58:52.620 George Buchanan was just like the courtly writer and he wrote Latin versus praising Mary Beaton.
00:58:57.300 and her performance in one of his masks, where I guess she played a queen. He wrote,
00:59:01.940 the fair Fleming was surely chosen by fortune to be a queen and not for Twelfth Night only.
00:59:06.700 He compared her to Venus in beauty and to Minerva in wit. So like, again, everyone is just horny
00:59:12.860 for the Marys. I like that she's fair Fleming. And then were they all like this? Like fair
00:59:17.940 Fleming, lusty Livingston, like were those the nicknames just because they couldn't call them
00:59:22.440 all married. It was confusing. I don't know. So when it became time for her to get married,
00:59:27.420 like Mary Queen of Scots was just like, I need to marry my Marys in these politically advantageous 1.00
00:59:30.940 ways. You know, Randy Randolph, I'm sure it was just there like raising his hand, like,
00:59:34.420 ooh, pick me. But he was out of favor because he had been on team Hollywood icon Jimmy Stewart
00:59:39.740 recently in one of those like anti-Mary attempted coups. Mary Beaton couldn't be married to Randy
00:59:45.080 because that would get her too close to the enemy, which is also interesting about how
00:59:49.060 Mary Queen of Scots was cool with Mary Fleming marrying Scottish Machiavelli, which is maybe
00:59:53.240 where she trusted Mary Fleming was up to his level, but also she knew that Scottish Machiavelli
00:59:57.360 could be changed. But Randy was just a hot mess. So who did she marry Mary Beaton to? Well,
01:00:04.460 remember we talked all about Jean Gordon. We had a whole episode about her. And so as a teenager,
01:00:09.060 Jean Gordon's true love had been Alexander Ogilvie. But then Mary Queen of Scots made Jean
01:00:13.800 Gordon marry Bothwell instead. And in fact, Mary Queen of Scots also arranged the marriage of
01:00:18.260 Alexander Ogilvie to Mary Beaton. So part of this is Mary Crow Scott's probably knew that Alexander
01:00:24.200 Ogilvie and Jean Gordon were in love with each other. And she just didn't want like these political
01:00:29.860 marriages had to sort out in a certain way. And so she felt like, well, okay, if I'm marrying Jean
01:00:34.540 to Bothwell, I need to make sure Alexander is married to someone as well, just so there's not
01:00:37.940 any risk of Jean leaving him or whatever. So anyway, Mary Beaton and Alexander Ogilvie's
01:00:44.180 wedding was two months after Jean and Bothwell's. And I do think they were of similar age for once
01:00:48.540 in this episode. So Mary Beaton was with Mary Queen of Scots in Edinburgh Castle when Mary
01:00:54.640 Queen of Scots gave birth to Prince James. And Mary Beaton was the one who, I guess she left
01:01:00.420 the room because it was all women in the room. And then she went to tell a guy who like rode 0.99
01:01:04.380 to London to tell the news to Elizabeth, who was just like, oh, goddammit, she had a son.
01:01:09.220 Anyway, but that just shows how trusted Mary Beaton was. So, you know, Mary Queen of Scots
01:01:13.660 saga is happening and when we pass over to the part where mary escaped lock leaven and there
01:01:18.300 were all of the scottish guys waiting across the lock to like fight for her so mary beaton's
01:01:23.420 husband alexander ogilvy was among those facing off against hollywood icon jimmy stewart eventually
01:01:28.260 they lost this battle alexander was captured alongside like the other beaton family members
01:01:33.540 who had been involved they were sent to edinburgh castle sentenced to execution until
01:01:38.320 john knox called for pardons of everybody and hollywood icon jimmy stewart agreed so like for
01:01:45.740 once in their life they did something okay i think it's because they were just like we can't kill
01:01:50.000 every scottish man in scotland there'll be nobody left so alexander ogilvy paid a fine and was able
01:01:56.620 to return home so mary beaton was still on mary queen of scots payroll even after the queen was
01:02:03.680 sent to england because technically she's still lady-in-waiting so she was getting a bit of income
01:02:09.060 she and alexander ogilvy were growing their wealth they're living in the north of scotland
01:02:13.880 and in a kind of best of hard work vibes alexander ogilvy had embarked on an ambitious building
01:02:19.800 project building boyne castle so it's one of the castles that today is in you know it was
01:02:25.440 abandoned and now it's just kind of like ruins but it shows the outlines of a grand house
01:02:29.360 so there were rumors like the casket letters of it all people were like of all the mary's mary
01:02:34.300 bean's handwriting was the most similar to mary's but it's just like why would she have done that
01:02:38.700 she was in north scotland like learning languages building a library and a house like she wasn't
01:02:44.860 doing that anyway but apparently her handwriting was the most similar to mary queen of scotts
01:02:48.860 and then as things progressed like they were still on team like catholic we support mary even as like
01:02:56.180 the protestants took over and that was clearly not the way the winds were blowing so this kind
01:03:02.200 of led to some financial difficulties because this wasn't a popular kind of way to be and
01:03:07.240 they needed money for this building project and i love this detail because guess who mary beaton
01:03:11.740 turned to to try and appeal to for money she turned to her old pal randy um asking him to
01:03:17.960 please intercede for her with jeremy jam from parks and recreation who's currently the regent
01:03:23.740 and randy to his credit passed along this request by this point i was reading up a bit about randy
01:03:29.120 and he married francis walsingham's sister so and then he went to russia he had an interesting life 0.74
01:03:35.960 i might do a so this asshole on him one day because he is an intriguing figure anyway randy 0.94
01:03:41.120 passed along this request to jeremy jam and somehow this all kind of worked out um they 0.98
01:03:46.180 managed to reach an agreement so that alex ogilvy didn't lose this land so it seems like these guys
01:03:51.480 really did help out. And I do, first of all, appreciate the audaciousness and the bravery
01:03:59.440 to turn to your like former almost boyfriend decades after you had not married him and asking
01:04:08.100 him for money. But the fact that Randy did is kind of cool of him. Anyway, May 1590. So Mary
01:04:15.080 Beaton was one of the people who greeted the new queen of Scotland and of Denmark when she arrived
01:04:21.060 to Mary, baby BJ, who was now an adult man. She was among 30 other gentlewomen. So Mary
01:04:28.060 Queen of Scots had written various wills. One of them, she had said to leave her books in French, 0.58
01:04:34.040 English, and Italian to Mary Beaton, which also shows how Mary Beaton was kind of like the bookish,
01:04:38.320 clever one. This will was not used as we know, they just kind of ransacked Mary's shit and didn't 0.97
01:04:42.860 give stuff that she wanted to give to the people she wanted to give it to. But Mary Beaton was 0.97
01:04:46.620 lifelong bookworm. She became a friend of the poet William Fowler, who served as secretary to Anne of
01:04:52.060 Denmark. He dedicated a translation to the right honorable Lady Mary Beaton Lady Boyne. She wrote
01:04:58.780 a poem to preface his translation of the triumphs of Petrarch. And she and Alex had built up a
01:05:03.640 library in their castle in a time when books were scarce. So she was like a really committed book
01:05:08.740 person in a time when it was hard to get books. She died 1597 at the age of 55. She and Alex
01:05:15.100 Ogilvy had three sons. James, it's like all the Marys, all his sons, all called James. So they're
01:05:20.280 like the Jameses. But again, that's like the only name there was. James, Andrew, and Robert were
01:05:25.000 their sons. Alexander Ogilvy later married his first love, Jean Gordon. And when he died, he
01:05:30.400 was buried next to Mary Beaton because, and I think we talked about that in the Jean Gordon
01:05:34.900 episode, or at least it's in the book about Jean Gordon, Daughters of the North. Like Jean Gordon
01:05:39.060 was cool with that. Like Alexander Ogilvy, like that was his family. Like they got to spend their
01:05:44.300 golden girls era together, but he was married to Mary Beaton for a long time. There are conflicting
01:05:48.920 reports about where Mary Beaton was buried. One suggestion is maybe in a place called Boindy
01:05:53.520 Church, which leads us to Mary number four, Mary Seaton, who I feel like we all know a bit
01:06:00.400 more about just because she was the one who was present with Mary for most of her life. And that's
01:06:04.900 because she never got married. So in terms of rain, it's interesting because rain is doing its
01:06:11.120 own thing. You know, it's basically alternative history. The first few episodes, there are four
01:06:15.980 ladies in waiting for reasons I will not disclose. There become less ladies in waiting as the show
01:06:21.320 goes on. Anyway, so the person on Rain who is the most similar to Mary Seaton is Ailey, who in the
01:06:27.420 early episodes of season one of Rain is one of the ladies in waiting. And she's very sweet and 0.70
01:06:32.120 naive and kind of innocent and like kind of pure little cinnamon roll type. And that's the Mary 0.91
01:06:37.380 Seaton vibe, which is why in Little Women, she's Beth. It's a bit trickier to get into
01:06:44.080 the other ones because like, she's not really Sophia in Golden Girls, but that's the only one
01:06:49.440 who's left. And she's not really Mary Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, but that's the only one who's
01:06:53.040 left. Like she is like Mary Bennett in the sense of like, she's a spinster. If we're getting into
01:06:57.040 Blackpink though, I do think the comparing her to Jenny is accurate because Jenny is also very sweet
01:07:02.860 and quiet and kind of shy. And Mary Seaton also was. Who's left in Sister of the Traveling Pants?
01:07:08.560 Like Tibby, like that's not the vibe. I don't know. I should have done, I didn't do Sex in the
01:07:13.700 City people, but none of them, none of them are Mary Seaton. I guess Miranda. Anyway, no, not 0.97
01:07:20.300 really. Anyway, Mary Seaton is Jenny from Blackpink slash Beth from Little Women is who she is.
01:07:27.520 she's sweet and just pure and kind and nice so mary seaton came from one of the grandest scottish
01:07:34.140 families she was the daughter of george the sixth lord seaton by his second marriage to a french
01:07:38.720 woman marie pierce who had come to scotland as one of marie de guise's maids of honors this so
01:07:43.860 two of the four marys had mothers who were french women so there's that french connection as well
01:07:48.680 the french pierce family claimed to have descended from the percy family of northumberland
01:07:53.300 so when queen mary returned to scotland after her ceremonial entry in edinburgh she went to
01:08:00.140 lynn lithgow palace where the four marys um went to the house of mary seton's brother george seton
01:08:06.540 at seton palace for dinner so mary seton was the quietest of the marys although having talked about
01:08:12.240 the other three it's like not hard to be the quietest of the marys like the other three all
01:08:16.460 sound pretty talkative um she's also the most pious and the most devoted to serving her queen 1.00
01:08:21.880 versus to the pleasures of the court. We know that she had a huge talent for fashion and 0.99
01:08:27.380 hairstyling. So she learned that art in France. And I think not just like anyone could learn an
01:08:32.700 art, but Mary Seaton was so good at it. Like there's clearly some innate talent as well. 0.94
01:08:37.520 So we know that Mary Crow Scots wore false hair pieces. Like when she was a younger person with
01:08:43.380 like a full head of natural hair, she still added hair pieces to that because that was the look.
01:08:48.340 and we know this because there are repeated references to these hair pieces in various
01:08:52.980 inventories of her belongings as well as lists of bags to carry them in when she was sent to
01:08:58.460 lock leave-in her hair pieces were among the first things she sent for when she was chopped there
01:09:03.620 yeah and it's interesting i think it was in the antonia fraser book which is a bit older so
01:09:08.060 you know like people just talk about hair is treated differently now than maybe it was before
01:09:13.300 like people nowadays are very open about using a weave or like hair pieces or wigs. Like it's,
01:09:20.260 I think people used to not talk about that as much, although people have used these since
01:09:23.880 forever. So in the Antonia Frazier book, she says at one point where it's like, you know,
01:09:27.400 Mary Queen of Scots still used these like wigs and hair pieces, even when she had like beautiful,
01:09:31.700 long, natural hair. And it's like, yeah, because the look she was going for, 1.00
01:09:35.260 you needed a wig or a hair piece. Like she was going for these, these were the looks she wanted, 0.98
01:09:39.260 you know anyone can wear wigs for any reasons anyway and mary queen of scots that brought her 0.98
01:09:44.500 confidence and that was the look that she was after and then later in her life like when mary 0.96
01:09:49.240 queen of scots left scotland she cut off all her hair so mary seaton you know the wigs of it all 0.99
01:09:53.380 were like quite crucial because having a pixie cut was not a thing women did in that era when
01:09:59.780 you were a queen and then later mary was so ill her hair got thin and stuff so again you've got 1.00
01:10:03.900 mary seaton there on the scene just like making sure that her hair always looked amazing speaking 0.95
01:10:08.700 of when they were locked leaving twice mary seton like she was called for mary queen of scots was
01:10:15.560 like please can i have like one of my marys with me they're like okay you can have this one and
01:10:19.020 thank god because she was there for her like in terms of being devoted to her mistress like
01:10:23.640 serving like devoting her life to serving mary queen of scots like she whatever is needed like
01:10:29.000 what's hairstyling whether it's swapping clothes standing in the window pretending to be her which 0.99
01:10:32.940 she did twice at one point mary seton was the one who did a trial run of climbing over the walls to
01:10:38.120 test if mary could do it and then she hurt herself and then the guards were like let's keep mary 1.00
01:10:42.160 queen scott's away from the walls maybe anyway but mary seaton the second disguise switcheroo was 0.97
01:10:48.160 successful so she was crucial part of mary queen scott's being able to escape with the help of young
01:10:53.220 willie etc so mary seaton's role and talent as the queen's head hairdresser was described in detail
01:10:58.940 by sir francis knolls the father of latisse knolls who was mary's first kind of babysitter when she
01:11:06.120 went to England. So he wrote a letter to William Cecil because Mary Queen of Scots, like wherever
01:11:11.600 she went, like she just like cut off all her hair and then like emergency went to England and she's
01:11:15.820 like, please send me my wigs. I need my wigs. And then when she was arrested and sent to lock
01:11:19.460 leave and she's like, first order of business, send me my wigs. So anyway, Mary had told Francis
01:11:25.860 Knowles that Mary Seton was the finest busker of a woman's head and hair in any country. I think
01:11:30.700 it's true francis knolls wrote yesterday and this day she did set such a curled hair upon the queen
01:11:36.320 that was said to be a peri wig that showed very delicately and every other day lightly she has a
01:11:41.980 new device of hairdressing without any cost and yet set forth a woman gaily well he was the one
01:11:48.180 who was like what color and texture is mary queen of scots hair i can't even tell because these wigs
01:11:53.600 are so good presumably i have to think mary seaton being there was help for mary queen of scots in
01:11:58.960 this really traumatic time reminding her of happier times just having her bestie there with
01:12:03.940 her especially her bestie who knows that like looking good is so important for mary queen of
01:12:07.860 scott's mental health and just self-care mary seaton was there as mary queen of scott's was 1.00
01:12:11.860 sitting around you know in the swamp castle and other places with best of hard work doing 0.98
01:12:15.720 embroideries like mary seaton was there so when we see some of the embroideries that were done
01:12:19.600 in that era mary seaton probably contributed to some of them i have to presume if her embroidery
01:12:24.260 was a skillful or so hairstyling like you know she was helpful and that these were beautiful
01:12:29.060 stitches that she did Mary Seton did fall ill in August 1570 her mother Mary Pierce heard that
01:12:36.540 Mary Seton was ill and wrote to Mary Queen of Scots asking could Mary Seton come home and we
01:12:41.760 talked about this a bit in the Mary Queen of Scots trapped episodes anyway but this was at a period
01:12:46.840 of time where Mary Queen of Scots was not allowed to receive or send any letters so even though this
01:12:50.720 is a letter from mary seton's mom being like can my sick daughter come visit me please the messenger
01:12:55.400 carrying the letters john moon was captured and mary pierce mary seton's mom was imprisoned in
01:13:01.400 edinburgh just for writing a letter to the exiled queen this was august so that october so two
01:13:06.580 months later queen elizabeth heard that mary pierce had been arrested and would be banished 0.98
01:13:09.920 from scotland for writing to her daughter and queen elizabeth was like fuck this like this is 0.98
01:13:15.140 dumb and so she wrote to regent lennox who again that was darnley's dad was the regent and she 0.99
01:13:20.600 said elizabeth is like this is no great cause basically no big deal although mary pierce had 0.97
01:13:25.760 by the time elizabeth intervened she had already been released and she promised not to write to
01:13:30.020 mary queen of scots again so mary queen of scots kept being moved around mary seaton was able to
01:13:36.580 stay with her and there was a plan at one point for mary seaton to visit her family i think like
01:13:43.600 she's been sick for at this point like at least 10 years and has just been with mary just being
01:13:49.200 her like ride or die with her all the time there was a point where they thought that maybe could
01:13:54.560 switch somebody else would come and be the new bestie for mary but then that other person got
01:13:59.460 married and so mary seaton kept her job mary seaton did have there was one admirer i didn't
01:14:06.600 write down his name here who wanted to marry her but then he was involved in the northern rising
01:14:11.020 which is when the Bible-burning thing that T-Dog was involved with, 0.55
01:14:15.240 and then he was executed so she couldn't marry him. 0.94
01:14:17.660 Mary Kravitzkos got a new master of the household,
01:14:19.660 whose name was Andrew Beaton, presumably part of the massive Beaton clan,
01:14:24.280 who fell for Mary Seaton, and he wanted to marry her.
01:14:27.200 There's two things standing in their way.
01:14:28.800 Firstly, even though he was from a very fancy, well-regarded family,
01:14:32.860 Mary Seaton was from the Seatons, and was he good enough for her?
01:14:36.420 But the other thing sounds like when Mary Seaton had been in France,
01:14:38.820 she had made a vow of celibacy, which was like a piece of paperwork that had to be like re-renounced
01:14:45.260 or whatever. Like it had to be annulled. So Andrew Beaton was like, well, I don't know about the
01:14:49.420 family thing, but so he went to Paris to obtain a dispensation to marry a person who had made a vow
01:14:54.700 of celibacy, which I guess he did. But then on the journey back from France to Scotland or to England,
01:15:00.480 he drowned. The boat sank, I guess. So, I mean, that sucks. And yeah, so Mary Seaton,
01:15:09.240 two years later, like she never married anybody. She was permitted to leave Mary. She's permitted
01:15:14.120 to go back to France and to retire. So starting in 1583, she lived at the convent of St. Pierre
01:15:21.720 at Rheims, where the abbess was Renée de Guise, Mary Queen of Scots' mother, the sister of Marie
01:15:28.240 dickies mary seaton though like her devotion to mary queen of scots was not diminished like none
01:15:32.480 of them were the marys were like they made this vow to be her friends when they were five years
01:15:36.560 old and none of them ever wavered ever so the same year she sent away mary seaton sent a gift
01:15:41.960 to mary queen of scots via the french ambassador um she sent a book and a box and we just know
01:15:46.420 that both of these things were searched for secret messages because everything was being searched for
01:15:50.920 secret messages although i don't think mary seaton is a secret message type of person but we do know
01:15:55.320 that she sent her some presents. So like she didn't go to France and forget about her. Like
01:15:58.920 it still mattered to her. In 1586, Mary Seton wrote a letter to the new French ambassador who
01:16:04.180 was headed to Scotland, like from France to go be the new ambassador in Scotland. And she wrote
01:16:07.800 about how much she missed Scotland. She wrote, it is now nearly 20 years since I left Scotland.
01:16:12.560 And in that time, it has pleased God to take the best part of my relations, friends, and
01:16:16.440 acquaintances. Nevertheless, I presume there remains still some who knew me and I shall be
01:16:20.960 obliged by your remembering me to them as occasion may serve. So it's interesting because Mary always
01:16:26.700 missed France. That was the place and time where she was happiest. And Mary Seton felt like Scotland
01:16:31.340 was the time where she was maybe happiest. Mary Seton wrote a letter in 1608 to Bess of Hardwick's
01:16:37.820 daughter, Mary, who was then the Countess of Shrewsbury, which I guess because she had hung
01:16:42.040 out with Bess and Mr. Bess and their whole family for like 19 years or give or take. And so she was
01:16:47.460 still in communication with them. So in this letter, Mary Seaton mentioned her right arm was
01:16:51.680 paralyzed. And she wrote the letter in French because she had forgotten the little English
01:16:56.460 that she knew after 20 years, as she calls herself a poor recluse in a monastery. She also sent other
01:17:03.120 letters to Arbella Stewart, other letters to Mary, Bess's daughter. She wrote to a companion of Anne
01:17:10.320 of Denmark in 1614, and then Mary Seton died at the convent in Rems in 1615. So little is known
01:17:18.020 about her last years at this convent other than what was written by James, the son of Mary Fleming
01:17:24.140 in Scottish Machiavelli, who went to visit her at some point, because maybe he, I don't know,
01:17:28.940 I feel like the Marys were all like cool aunties to each other's sons, all called James. So this
01:17:33.100 guy, James, Scottish Machiavelli Jr., visited the convent to see his auntie Mary Seton, and he found
01:17:38.440 her to be living in poverty and suffering from failing health. He complained to her family to
01:17:43.140 whom he was vaguely related and also to King James, but there's no evidence of a response.
01:17:49.300 The bequests in her will, like when she died, showed that she was wealthy. So I don't know
01:17:53.120 if he misinterpreted what he saw or if he was exaggerating things. Anyway, Mary Seton outlived
01:17:58.420 Mary Queen of Scots by nearly 30 years. So let me just do some quick math here that I forgot to do.
01:18:04.560 so so she would have been like age 75 or so when she died she lasted 30 years longer so maybe that's
01:18:11.820 where she's the sophia and the golden girls because she's the oldest one anyway those are
01:18:17.700 the marys and i will say when i started researching them i couldn't even remember what the four
01:18:23.040 different last names were let alone who was who but by the end of it i was just like oh that's
01:18:27.840 that one oh that's that one and now like will i remember you know six months from now which is
01:18:32.740 which I don't know, but I like to think I will.
01:18:35.880 So we're going to score them as a group.
01:18:37.760 This is a similar thing to what I did with when we did the Masarinettes,
01:18:42.780 Hortense Mancini's sisters.
01:18:45.240 Like, we're just going to score them as a group.
01:18:47.840 Although there are other categories.
01:18:49.620 Like, I don't know.
01:18:50.440 Like, there's the Lady Jane Seymour Memorial Award
01:18:52.180 for Outstanding Supporting Performance,
01:18:54.460 which we have given to Mary Seton for her devotion to Mary, Queen of Scots.
01:18:58.080 I don't see myself giving this award to any of the other Marys for their devotion to each other
01:19:03.900 or to Mary. I think Mary Seaton was the one who was the most there for her. And it's not that the
01:19:08.140 other ones didn't want to be. It's just they were in a position to help as directly as Mary Seaton
01:19:12.000 was. The Jeweled Tortoise Award, that's a very rare and prestigious award for people who
01:19:17.060 go above and beyond in the best friending business. So we're going to score on the
01:19:22.340 Fredigan Memorial Scandaliciousness Scale. So for the four Marys, like this is a combination. 0.84
01:19:29.380 So scandalousness, I feel like, you know, like they showed up and they were dancing and like 0.94
01:19:34.340 cute and 19 years old and all these 40 year old men were either like horny for them or just like 0.98
01:19:39.820 really mad about them having boobs or whatever. That's not scandalous. That's just like them 0.91
01:19:43.660 existing in a patriarchal hellhole. I wouldn't necessarily call any of them scandalous. Mary
01:19:48.500 Seton helping Mary Cream Scott's escape is a bit scandalous. Hmm. Mary Fleming was involved with
01:19:55.920 Scottish Machiavelli and I imagine that it was like this sexy Lola-Narcisse relationship,
01:20:00.520 which is scandalous, but not really. Like, you know, God bless them, the Marys. I'm going to
01:20:04.480 give them ultimately a four. I'm going to give them a four for scandalousness because there
01:20:09.760 wasn't, they weren't, that wasn't their job. That's not what they're there for. There's nothing
01:20:13.800 wrong with having a low scandalousness score. Like that's just what they were up to. The four
01:20:17.980 is mostly for mary seaton for her complicity in mary's schemes speaking of schemes scheminess is
01:20:23.760 the next one so i do think there is evidence of scheminess with mary fleming like even though we
01:20:28.320 don't like she married scottish machiavelli and he over the course of the relationship completely
01:20:33.740 changed from being this like weaselly playing every size guy to being ride or die for mary
01:20:38.600 queen of scots which speaks to her being able to manipulate him in a long-term very successful way 1.00
01:20:44.260 Mary Seaton, her scheminess, like she didn't come up with the schemes necessarily to switch 1.00
01:20:48.280 clothes, but she was involved in the scheminess of trying to climb over the wall, switching 1.00
01:20:53.300 clothes twice. 0.59
01:20:54.700 Like I think for scheminess, like it's not a high score, like Livingston, I don't know 1.00
01:20:59.280 about any schemes she did.
01:21:00.960 Beaten, that's not really scheminess.
01:21:02.880 That's just, she's like reading books.
01:21:04.280 I don't, I'm going to say, I'm going to say five for scheminess just because of the subtextual
01:21:09.380 scheminess of Mary Fleming.
01:21:10.580 And because we know that Mary Seton was involved in like helping Mary Wisconsin escape from prison, which is inherently scheming, whatever her role was in coming up with this game, she helped pull it off.
01:21:21.880 There's significance.
01:21:22.800 And this is one where I was just like, not sure.
01:21:24.860 I actually turned to, so people who join my Patreon at at least $5 or more a month get access to a Discord, which is basically just a big group chat where we're just like talking shit about John Knox all the time.
01:21:37.560 but also you know i i go there for when i have questions and i was like y'all i'm doing this
01:21:43.140 episode about the four marys and what is their significance like i love them too much i can't
01:21:47.360 i can't decide like what is their significance like when you think okay when i think about
01:21:52.560 mary queen of scots like it's her and there's the four the four marys like on rain it's like
01:21:58.240 there's mary and there's the marys like and then 2018 saoirse ronan movie it's like there's mary
01:22:03.040 and there's the Marys. Like her having these like backup dancers slash singers is part of her myth
01:22:08.360 and legend, but the Marys themselves, are they significant? Of them, I think Mary Seton is
01:22:14.400 significant in the sense of without her, perhaps Mary Queen of Scots wouldn't have escaped Lock
01:22:19.780 Leaven, which was an important part of her story. I think they were significant to Mary for just
01:22:24.920 like having at least one of them with her all the time, just kind of helped her out mental health
01:22:29.240 wise like mary was so known for her fashion mary seaton was involved in that but also the four of 1.00
01:22:34.620 them like mary crevis got showing up in the black and the white outfits was emphasized by having the
01:22:39.160 four mary's with her but that's just like they're not just accessories it's tricky it's tricky i'm
01:22:44.880 gonna give them a four for certificates one for each of them because i like them all a lot the
01:22:50.760 sexism bonus is where we give points for people who maybe could have accomplished more were it
01:22:55.520 not for sexism. I do want to say, when I was doing the Best of Hardwick episode two weeks ago,
01:23:00.500 I gave her, I think, a four for sexism. And I know some of you like to play along at home.
01:23:04.800 So I do want to make clear, in very rare cases, people do get less than five for sexism. Early
01:23:10.480 on in the show, I would say, you know, everyone gets at least a five because the patriarchy is 0.96
01:23:14.360 just everywhere and it's shitty. Best of Hardwick, I gave four because she made the patriarchy her 0.77
01:23:19.460 bitch. Like how much more could she have accomplished without sexism? Like how much 1.00
01:23:22.920 more could she've accomplished at all she accomplished everything like sexism didn't
01:23:26.060 really get in her way other people who have had lower than five on sexism again it's just a few 0.62
01:23:31.000 people it's like empress cc got less because she wasn't i forget what her rationale was exactly
01:23:35.800 but i don't think that sexism was necessarily what got in her way lola montez also i think got 1.00
01:23:41.700 less than five on sexism because that didn't stop her like some women if i ever do elizabeth the
01:23:47.700 first i feel like sexism didn't stop her in fact it helped her so but in terms of sexism i'm gonna
01:23:52.580 give them that like the general standard score of five because all of them like maybe they could
01:23:57.960 have done more if they hadn't had to find a husband not that mary seton did get married but
01:24:02.760 like i don't know i i think that the fact that they went to scotland and all of these like 40 0.99
01:24:08.620 year old men were just drooling over them or like calling them whores all the time sucks and they 0.93
01:24:12.960 could have had much more fun if that wasn't happening to them so altogether this is a score 0.97
01:24:16.980 of 18, which in terms of this podcast is pretty low because I tend to talk about really scandalous
01:24:23.960 people. In fact, that is the second lowest score anyone has ever gotten ever, but that's where
01:24:28.980 they land because I talk a lot about royals and stuff and they're able to get away with more shit 0.96
01:24:35.960 than non-royals, but also we know about them. So the fact we know about the Marys at all is 0.95
01:24:41.420 impressive because it's kind of like the season we did a Jean Gordon episode or even the Elizabeth
01:24:46.300 the Valois episode, just people who are living more kind of like standard issue life for this
01:24:52.300 era. I like to look at them too, partially because it shows how people like Mary Queen of Scots are
01:24:57.040 set apart, how they're living their lives differently. Or best of hard work is maybe
01:25:00.960 a better example of somebody who could have lived a life like that, but she just through her tenacity
01:25:06.040 and good luck and things like she was able to make a different sort of life for herself. So
01:25:11.160 it's interesting to look at people like the Marys. And also I like, this is kind of the finale for
01:25:15.800 the Mary Queen of Scots season because there's been high drama. And this is just kind of like,
01:25:21.520 well, here's some nice people who are nice. It's sort of a nice way to sort of chill out.
01:25:25.740 Speaking of the Mary Queen of Scots season and this being the last episode of it,
01:25:29.800 I do have information that I'm in the early stages of planning a live YouTube stream.
01:25:34.980 So sometime in October, I'm going to be doing a YouTube live with Alison Epstein and Lana Wood
01:25:41.580 Johnson. We're going to do a live episode of Vulgar Peace Theater, which is where the three
01:25:45.860 of us talk about costume dramas. And we're going to talk about the much requested 2018 Mary Queen
01:25:51.120 of Scots film, which is literally called Mary Queen of Scots. It's the ones starring Saoirse
01:25:55.080 Ronan as Mary, Margot Robbie as Elizabeth, Taylor Swift's ex Joe Alwyn as Bobby Duds,
01:26:02.340 and David Tennant as John Knox. Lots of people in it. Lots to talk about. I'm really interested
01:26:07.100 because I watched that movie in the theater in 2018 when it first came out, when I was just
01:26:10.860 kind of like riding on vibes I'm like I know the story of Mary Queen of Scots I have watched Rain
01:26:14.660 and I watched it and I was like seems accurate to me but now that I know so much more than I did
01:26:18.660 then I think it'll be interesting to watch it especially now that I will maybe kind of know
01:26:22.400 more who some of the main characters are anyway the date has not been chosen for that yet I will
01:26:26.420 when one is I will announce it here on the podcast so you can all enjoy that I think that can be like
01:26:32.040 the true finale of the Mary Queen of Scots season but also we're done talking about Mary Queen of
01:26:37.660 Scots, but the podcast continues on. So there's going to be still episodes. There's still going
01:26:42.280 to be an episode every week, just so you know. My style in preparing this podcast is when I'm
01:26:49.880 reading about a person, I really like to immerse myself in the story. And that's why these podcast
01:26:54.800 episodes end up being like two and a half hours long. But I really like, I want to read a biography.
01:26:58.920 I want to look at more biographies. I want to look at pictures of them to really sit with it until I
01:27:03.740 feel like I know the person and that's where I feel comfortable sharing the story with you.
01:27:08.220 That takes time and effort and energy. I'm not able to do that every week, which is why some
01:27:13.840 weeks it's going to be not that. So some weeks it will be me sharing a story with you that I've
01:27:17.660 researched. Some weeks it's going to be a guest coming on to share a story with me and with you.
01:27:22.860 And that's sometimes where I'm just like, I really love this story. But instead of me just
01:27:25.920 paraphrasing one person who wrote an academic paper, like I'm going to bring that person on
01:27:30.180 so they can explain it like one-on-one to you.
01:27:33.360 So sometimes it's going to be me talking.
01:27:34.620 Sometimes it's going to be a guest telling a story.
01:27:36.520 Sometimes it'll be an author talking about their book coming up
01:27:39.180 that I think you will enjoy.
01:27:40.860 So every week there's going to be something.
01:27:42.880 And thank you for going with me on this journey.
01:27:46.120 I know this is different from other podcasts
01:27:48.420 because I'm kind of figuring this out as I go along.
01:27:51.560 Like the first season of this podcast, I did like six episodes
01:27:53.920 and then I took like six months off and I was like,
01:27:55.840 oh, hey, here's some more episodes.
01:27:56.760 Like I've just been figuring it out.
01:27:58.260 But now that I know, like for a long time, the biggest request I had was like, people want to
01:28:02.800 weekly episodes. And with the international season, I did that, burnt myself out a bit,
01:28:09.160 trying to like, get like with the amount of research I was doing every week to do a new
01:28:13.120 episode. So what I found is a way to be able to provide you with weekly content, while also,
01:28:18.260 you know, having self care for myself is to have different sorts of things. So every week,
01:28:24.380 there's gonna be something fun, there's gonna be something nice. There's lots of fun stuff coming
01:28:27.280 up. The show is a beautiful potpourri. This is how I figured out to be able to have weekly episodes
01:28:31.600 for you all. And thank you all for understanding that and like vibing with me on this journey.
01:28:37.040 But please note, cause I also have some people have been like, well, they're going to be like
01:28:40.100 episodes of just Anne. Like there are going to be those. It's just not every week. I can't do
01:28:44.820 that every week. But if you are just like, I want some more just Anne talking in my ear holes.
01:28:49.060 Well, if you join the Patreon, which is at patreon.com slash Anne Foster writer,
01:28:53.360 you'll get access to all of the archived episodes that i have there and all the new ones that are
01:28:59.120 coming so i've done a bunch of episodes called still this asshole where i talk about gross men
01:29:03.480 from history and honestly after doing this research on the marys like 100 i'm gonna be
01:29:08.180 doing one on randy randolph coming up at some point because just the the walsingham of it all 0.96
01:29:13.220 the russia of it all like just this messy bitch like i feel like that appeals to me to learn more 0.98
01:29:18.260 about him so we put episodes there talking about how shitty napoleon is charles dickens like thomas 0.99
01:29:23.160 Jefferson, Hernan Cortez, I feel like John Smith from like the Pocahontas story. Anyway, so you can
01:29:29.980 hear all those on the Patreon if you subscribe for at least $5 or more a month and also Vulgar
01:29:34.660 Peace Theater, which are episodes where Alison and Lana and I talk about different costume dramas
01:29:39.400 we've talked about. Most recently, we're going to be doing one on Chevalier, the movie about the
01:29:44.160 Chevalier of St. George, but we've also talked about Cyrano with Peter Dinklage, Newsies, the
01:29:49.560 musical we did anastasia the animated film a knight's tale like just a real tombstone we rotate
01:29:56.260 which of us is choosing the movie so mostly it's episodes where one of us has seen the movie and
01:30:00.820 the other two hasn't and we have a really good time doing that and yeah so also featuring the
01:30:05.880 patreon for at least five dollars a month you would access your discord which is our little
01:30:09.860 group chat thing and i'm really happy with how it's it's shaping up we're at the moment by the
01:30:15.160 time you hear this it'll probably be done but we've been doing a thing on there that's like
01:30:17.900 vulgar history survivor sim which is like taking some of the most memorable people from vulgar
01:30:22.240 history and what would happen if they were on survivor but we're also just like chatting and
01:30:26.160 having a nice time and like stuff about the scandalousness score or the significance score
01:30:30.500 i was asking people there so because i do get nice messages from people who are listening members of
01:30:36.200 tits out brigade and sometimes i think it'd be nice for you all to talk to each other and the
01:30:39.800 discord is a way that i found to do that anyway so you can also if you join my patreon patreon.com
01:30:46.160 social and foster writer for at least a dollar or more a month, then you also get early access
01:30:50.400 to all the episodes and ad free access to all the episodes. So every contribution helps. And
01:30:55.540 the more money I make from the Patreon, the more time I'm able to contribute to this podcast,
01:30:59.620 which is part of why I'm able to do weekly episodes now. You can also get in touch with me
01:31:03.580 if you have ideas of people to talk about in future episodes, which I love getting. I've got
01:31:09.960 a really long list, but I am happy to get more suggestions. And like the more kind of, to me,
01:31:15.420 lesser known obscure people are often always suggestions from from you of people from your
01:31:21.020 culture or your country or your community i do still want to do an episode at least one about
01:31:27.460 every country where there's somebody out there listening right now so if i haven't talked about
01:31:32.060 someone from your country let me know who you suggest from there and you can get in touch with
01:31:35.260 me there's a form at vulgarhistory.com you can also email me at vulgarhistorypod at gmail.com
01:31:40.460 i'm also on social media i'm most active on instagram at vulgar history pod i'm also on
01:31:45.960 tiktok at vulgar history i'm on like threads i'm on blue sky like i don't know how this like
01:31:51.420 is gonna all shake out with like where people are landing in terms of social media but if you're on
01:31:56.760 one of those places like follow me there and say hi and i'll know that maybe that's where i should
01:32:00.600 be posting more like truly i don't know but in terms of pictures and things like that's gonna
01:32:04.480 to be mostly on Instagram. I also have merch available, vulgarhistory.com slash store.
01:32:09.780 Takes you to the TeePublic store, which is best for people in the US. Or if you're outside the
01:32:13.420 US, you can shop on vulgarhistory.redbubble.com. Both sites, like every couple of weeks have a
01:32:18.800 sale. So if you're like, oh, I don't know if I want to buy this merch at this price, like at
01:32:23.120 this full price, like truly just wait a week, there's probably going to be a sale. And I think
01:32:28.840 that's everything I have to tell you. I'll tell you one more thing, which is just that I also have
01:32:32.460 a newsletter, which has nothing to do with this podcast at all. Honestly, I started it so that I
01:32:36.600 would have a place to talk about not women's history because I was starting to see that as 0.98
01:32:40.540 a lack in my life. I mostly talk about murder mysteries that I'm reading or watching, and that's
01:32:44.660 at threenicethings.substack.com. Anyway, so many amazing episodes coming up. Weekly episodes.
01:32:52.320 It's all good. I'm not going anywhere. Thank you all for listening to me on this
01:32:55.920 journée. I still laugh a little when I think, or some of you mentioned that I've said this in past
01:33:01.760 episodes when I ever thought I could have done Mary Queen of Scots in four weeks. That was
01:33:05.840 preposterous of me. And anyway, until next time, my friends, keep your pants on and your tits out. 1.00
